Yeah, something smells rotten about that. Don’t get me wrong, I understand that there’s not a lot of love for George W. Bush, but considering that a lot of wingnuts touch themselves at night with a portrait of him hanging over their bed, I’d imagine that number would be higher.

CSB: I was witness to an accident on a freeway on-ramp a few years ago. It was a foggy day, and this ramp was completely enshrouded. I drove semi-cautiously up and around and came to a stop behind the traffic that was merging onto the next freeway. As we’re creeping along, behind me I hear *SCREEEECH* *BANG!* and I start cackling madly. Some idiot had come flying up the ramp, like they do - maybe even cutting in at the last minute - lost his sight in the fog and rear-ended some poor soul.

Trump to show restraint by bombing Pyongyang’s key nuclear site in a limited attack.

Jong Un to show restraint by bombing Seoul and targeting Japan in a limited attack.

See how this works?

Trump has someone whispering in his ear that the North will act like Syria has done when Israel went after Syria’s nuclear facilities a few years back. I bet just about anything that this is the equivalent that they’re looking at.

It would be what I would offer up if I knew that a single strike could take out the key nuclear facility. Problem is that North Korea has distributed their nuclear facilities and they’ve hardened their sites against attacks.

North Korea isn’t going to take an attack like this lying down, and they’re going to preserve their regime at pretty much any costs.

Hell of an understanding of law though.

Rachel knows politics as it is her main line of study and business is politics and policy. In ways she could easily turn to politics.

Michelle is experienced being a lawyer and having gone through the ringer of the White House. I would say she knows politics by osmosis.

And this is not an endorsement of anyone at this time. Just trying to be factual.

I just learned that there’s a women’s professional sports team called the Metropolitan Riveters.

This is quite possibly the best name for a women’s sports team in the history of the world.

The team’s goalie is Nana Fujimoto of Sapporo.

Lady hockey is amaaaaaaaaaazing. Very different than the men’s NHL style - a lot faster, more skating with the puck, fewer hits, more about the rebounds to score.

That’s the one sport I might make an actual effort to watch at the Olympics.

I read about that earlier today. It is disgusting that the Supreme Court rejected the argument. Did they need the juror in question to show up for duty in a Klansman outfit to show there was undue bias? Or do conservatives just need their blood sacrifices death penalty that bad?

(I would be struck from a murder pool because of my opposition to the death penalty. Have there ever been any court cases challenging that sort of strike because a prosecutor is not getting a cross-section of the populace, but instead just picking out the bloodthirsty?)

The Ghost of a Flea  Jan 8, 2018 • 8:31:24pm

To explain what I meant in my last comment:

What Trump does with, say “The National Anthem”—scream about how important it is, get demonstratively sentimental (and then angry)—has nothing to do with the actual thing “The National Anthem.” It has to do with using that concept as carrot and stick.

The anthem is no longer a ritual celebrating a nation with ideals, the ritual matters more than the ideals.

Ditto, “the flag.” Ditto, in some tiny way, Ivanka Trump responding to Oprah’s speech. To play on the Bruce Lee quote (which in turn paraphrased the document Lankavatara): these are people for whom their finger pointing at the moon, is the moon…or that’s what they’re selling.

Everybody does this to some degree, unconsciously and sometimes consciously, but bullshitters do it all the time. Symbol-value is very useful for manipulators and abusers, since there’s actually no completely coherent, unified definition of what anything means or represents, and meaning mutates constantly and/or is selectively altered. Get people emotional enough about “freedom,” then redefine the parameters of “freedom”: this happens all the time. Concepts don’t matter or have to make internal sense, they just have to function in the moment.

Furthermore, many motherfuckers treat their own ideals this way. Their “ideals” and “principles” just bend to meet a new need. The most blatant example being the cult leader “God wants me to bang your wife” moment, but right now we’re dealing with a myriad of meaningless-but-strongly-felt garbage. “Law and order,” “religious freedom,” “protect the children,” et cetera. The notions are deliberately hollow because the bullshitters only want maximum use value, not actual structure imposed on their wants…but also because it makes grifting easier: take a word with a vague set of positive associations, but start altering the definition.

I was going to add: the “bathroom bills” that have turned up are a great example of hollowing out a concept, then stirring up strong emotion such that people don’t think if the notion:

the bathroom bill protects kids from perverts

actually makes structural sense. The notion is a Trojan horse for give legal force to trans panic, but that doesn’t sell quite as easy as “protect kids.”

Crime data about who exploits the vulnerable says one thing; big emotional statement…lots of fear and anger and parental kabuki about protective love…says something way fucking easier.

That’s correct.

reuters.com

The case was returned to a lower court so the man can re-argue his sentence.

The three most conservative justices were the ones who didn’t see a problem with the sentence (Thomas, Alito, Gorsuch).

Thomas said the court decision was “no profile in courage” and that it would “delay justice for the victim.” (In the unlikely event I was murdered, I don’t want anyone executed in my name as so-called “justice.” I’ve had this discussion with my wife, who favours the death penalty. I consider it morally repugnant, particularly if the wrong person is convicted.)

After being accused by Make: ‘s editor of being a fraud, Naomi Wu is now a cover feature on the magazine.

For the uninitiated, Naomi (not her real name) is a coder based in Shenzhen, China, who has a YouTube channel devoted to making electronic projects, 3D printing, and testing various computer gadgets. She looks like an anime character, so some incorrectly assume she’s clueless. Granted, she’s not an expert, but her visibility is encouraging girls and women in China to try electronics and making as hobbies.
