Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts (R-Hedge funds) puts forth a budget plan to end state health funding to any health clinic that provides abortion services.

Gov. Pete Ricketts announced Monday that he will try once more to take family planning funds away from any health clinic that offers abortions, such as Planned Parenthood.

“Nebraska is a pro-life state, and the state’s budget should reflect those values,” he said. “This year, I am recommending that the Legislature revise the state’s distribution of federal Title X health care funds to ensure that no funds are used to subsidize abortion.”

Ricketts said he plans to include that recommendation in his budget proposal, which is to be unveiled Wednesday along with his State of the State speech.

The governor attempted a similar change last year.

His budget proposal included language that would have steered Nebraska’s $1.9 million annual share of federal Title X funds to entities that offer a broad range of health services.

The big secret? It’s tap water that the priest (well, for us Anglicans) says this prayer over the water:
Almighty God, who through the water of baptism has raised us from sin into new life, and by the power of your life-giving Spirit ever cleanses and sanctifies your people: + Bless, we pray you, this water for the service of your holy Church; and grant that it may be a sign of the cleansing and refreshment of your grace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
(at the + he performs a sign of the cross while touching the water) My priest usually adds this antiphon:
I saw water proceeding out of the temple, from the right side it flowed;
And all those to whom that water came shall be saved. Alleluia.

What to make of it? To you, it’s still tap water. To my mother it was something important (she had holy water from her trip to Lourdes after her cancer diagnosis). Me? I see the thread is wrapped up. Pretty good summation at the end.

The rest of this week looks to be real interesting. Lot’s of posturing the past few months just got blown out of the water with the Fusion transcript and the Wolff book. It has been a ton of factual weight placed on the Republicans.

How will they handle it now?

It almost seems like maybe a reason so many retirements are popping up is a lot of people knew/know what was/is going on, and it is time to bail before the real fan gets warmed up for their bullshit cover.

Spring cleaning in the G.O.P.

The big old Italianate Catholic Church of my youth had Italian marble fonts that held probably a quart of water in them at every door to the church. Pedestal and all. Polished marble. If I remember correctly, that was 6 entrances and I think one prior to the entrance going to the balcony for the choir members and the organists and assistant (to run the air pump for the bellows, etc.)

I used to wonder what that Church cost in the day. Didn’t pay attention when younger other than to look at all the lushness of the materials.

Sure did learn why the Monsignor that was the head of our parrish was all the time lighting the congregations up about the debt though. Let’s have two collections!

(I took these precautions because I do things I don’t want the bank to get blamed for.) But I knew my idiot congressman Andy Biggs would mouth off about DACA eventually, and he did, yesterday. When the Tim Sloan video got posted, I figured I’d let Andy know that the CEO of the fourth largest employer of the state is asking for a permanent legislative solution for the Dreamers.

Yeah, that’s my congressman. *sigh*

I’m starting to have a complex view about the 2016 election. I really wanted Clinton to win. But, in hindsight, I’m seeing our reality versus the one where she wins.

1. In the reality she wins, Democrats are not in charge of the House or Senate. Republicans spend all of the time investigating Clinton. Due to apathy and the general disappointment that Democrats always feel after accomplishing something historic (the election of the first woman), Democrats get hammered in 2018, losing half of the 25 Senate seats they have to defend, pushing Republican majorities over 60. They get hammered again in 2020, leading to a Republican president with large majorities in both chambers.
2. In our reality, Trump wins, finally waking people the fuck up about what’s at stake. Even through gerrymandering, Democrats take one chamber, in part due to the large number of Republicans retiring. Democrats also reclaim a number of state governorships and legislatures. Investigations of Trump lead to further Republican losses in 2020, including the presidency.

There’s a growing part of me that thinks we needed this shitshow, and we got lucky that the asshole on top couldn’t think his way out of a paper bag, though he’d tell everyone he escaped easily.

I would never say it’s good that we got Trump — but I’m glad we’ve gotten a wake-up call that democracy is fragile, Russia is fucking dangerous, the Nazis are more numerous than we thought, and there are no good Republican politicians or pundits left.

As much as we’ll have to work for the midterms and continue to resist the GOP agenda in the coming years, I’m starting to think that big chunks of the Trump cult are going to fail on their own, by way of bad luck, happenstance and mistakes, along with the occasional well-timed news drop.

Anything can happen. We still have a lot of work to do, but a lot of Trump world is going to destroy itself.

I definitely think so. Oprah grew up under Jim Crow and already knows that, in most cases, when you’re black and live in the good old USA, no matter how well-educated and wealthy you are, race matters and for millions of others you’re still a n****r. A couple hours ago, I read an article on Raw Story about a group of Oklahoma workers who were discussing whether they’d be off work for MLK’s birthday, and guess what? The word n****r was a prominent feature of the discussion, so yeah, I think If Oprah runs, she knows what to expect from the ignorant, racist, bigoted, misogynistic mouth-breathers. When one is used to dealing with sh*t like that, one comes to expect it. I have. My advantage is knowing that when they use the word in reference to me, I know they’re not talking about me, they’re showing the ugly, hateful rot that resides inside of themselves. These are some of the same persons who fill up church pews every Sunday and forget about following the teachings of Jesus as soon as they get into their vehicles and head toward their homes.
