Trump Accuses Dianne Feinstein of Committing a Crime by Releasing the Fusion GPS Transcript

Politics • Views: 32,138

One way you can always tell that the Trump-thing has been injured where it hurts most — his ego — is when he lashes out on Twitter and accuses his target of doing something illegal. (If only Trump could criminalize criticism of himself, imagine how much greater America would be.)

And this morning he did exactly this, attacking Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) for releasing the transcript of the interview with Fusion GPS co-founder Glenn Simpson that Senate Republicans wanted to hide from the public. (Because it laid bare their duplicity and dishonesty about the Trump-Russia dossier created by British ex-spy Christopher Steele.)

In typical grade-school fashion, Trump worked in one of his childish name-calling bits too, labeling the Senator “Sneaky Dianne Feinstein,” although what she did was the exact opposite of “sneaky,” of course.

The Washington Post’s Philip Bump lists 17 (!) other times Trump has accused his critics and political opponents of imaginary crimes: The ‘illegal’ acts Trump has spotted since 2015.

Trump followed up the attack on Feinstein with yet another tweet calling the investigation into his possible collusion with Russia a “witch hunt,” oddly capitalized.

What he means by “Republicans should finally take control” is anybody’s guess. This man is not well.

Russia & the world is laughing at the stupidity they are witnessing.

Hey, Donny, hate to break it to you but they’re not laughing with you, they’re laughing at you.

Feinstein, for all her faults, isn’t going to just release a transcript of classified testimony. There was no real valid reason for the hearing to have been behind closed doors to begin with - the people testifying were not government employees who had access to classified information. And “oh we needed to keep it private so we could get other witnesses to testify” is bullshit, you have fucking subpoena powers, assholes.

It wouldn’t surprise me. Trade deals are complex,a nd he can barely understand a simple transaction, let alone how to manage a mutually beneficial trade arrangement among 3 partners. He automatically believes he’s been snookered in any deal where all sides are satisfied, or at least equally dissatisfied.

GW Bush would have been (rightly) blasted for screwing up like that, as would his father and Reagan. But I think with Trump, everyone just understands that he’s “the common clay of the new west” so they took the bar and buried it about a foot underground. Unfortunately for Trump, he keeps tripping over the little bump where the bar is buried.

Sigh. I didn’t want to jump in about it, but the Diet Coke hate hurts - especially the factually wrong assertions.

Myth: Diet Coke has intense amounts of caffeine, worse than coffee. For the record, an ounce of Diet Coke contains 4 mg of caffeine. Coffee has 3-7 times as much caffeine per ounce, from 12-30 mg.

For the record, I drink about three liters of Diet Coke a day, am over 70, and my cardiologist says I am the healthiest patient she has. Contrary to Dolt 45’s athletic example, as a golfer I am currently the best professional disc golfer in the world in the Legends division, over the age of 70.

So, please, I understand there are reasons to not want to drink Diet Coke, but don’t make it out to be what it’s not. Among other reasons, that’s not what this blog is about.

The only Coke worth drinking is Mexican Coke, with real cane sugar. Coke with HFCS is a meager substitute. Other Cokes are swill.

Kosher for Passover Coke is made with cane sugar. People line up outside the kosher bodega here and I know that most of them are not Jewish, let alone kosher observant.

Our wage laws and structures have been contorted so much by corporate/business interest. As we know, many of these businesses rely on access to food stamps, housing assistance, and other support for their “employees”. Walmart and McDonalds being two famous abusers. And anyone who thinks the only reason they are “robotic” is low wages doesn’t know how business operates. “Be slaves or be nothing” is the conservative slogan, not even “Work Makes Free”.

re: #71 7-y (Expectation of Great Things in Due Course)

Myth: Diet Coke has intense amounts of caffeine, worse than coffee. For the record, an ounce of Diet Coke contains 4 mg of caffeine. Coffee has 3-7 times as much caffeine per ounce, from 12-30 mg.

For the record, I drink about three liters of Diet Coke a day

It’s not the caffeine, it’s the aspartame and other sugar substitutes.

Richard Hodin, a surgeon at Massachusetts General Hospital and the study’s senior author, explained, “Sugar substitutes like aspartame are designed to promote weight loss and decrease the incidence of metabolic syndrome, but a number of clinical and epidemiologic studies have suggested that these products don’t work very well and may actually make things worse.”

Dr. Hodin and his team found that the artificial sweetener inhibits intestinal alkaline phosphatase (IAP), which is a gut enzyme that researchers believe prevents obesity. So even though there’s no sugar in your diet beverage, it might not aid you in your weight loss journey.

To test out aspartame’s effect on IAP, researchers examined four groups of mice over a four-week period. Scientists fed two groups a high-fat diet—one received drinking water spiked with aspartame, while the other had plain water. The remaining two groups were fed normal diets—one with aspartame water, the other with plain. Mice drinking aspartame-spiked water consumed the equivalent of three and a half cans of diet soda per day.

Researchers found “while there was little difference between the weights of the two groups fed a normal diet, mice on a high-fat diet that received aspartame gained more weight than did those on the same diet that received plain water.” Furthermore, mice who received aspartame water had higher blood pressure and higher blood sugar levels, which researchers believe is evidence of a glucose intolerance. “Both aspartame-receiving groups had higher levels of the inflammatory protein TNF-alpha in their blood, which suggests the kind of systemic inflammation associated with metabolic syndrome,” Science Daily reported.

One recently discovered mechanism for this is that the receptors in your taste buds that register the sensation of sweetness are present in other parts of the body like the intestinal tract, where they trigger endocrine responses in your body. So just because you’re not getting all the extra calories from sugar doesn’t mean your body isn’t reacting in other ways like it has sugar in it.

I. Sweet taste receptors:
Sweet taste receptors in the enteroendocrine cells (cells that secrete hormones) of the gut and pancreas are suggested to play an important role in nutrient sensing and sugar absorption, both processes necessary for energy and maintaining a normal metabolism. When sweet taste receptors sense sugars, they elicit the release of gut hormones. One such hormone, glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1), is responsible for facilitating the absorption of glucose into the bloodstream, enhancing insulin secretion in the pancreas and regulating appetite [4]. Disruptions in any of these physiological processes can result in the development of type II diabetes. In individuals with type II diabetes, the beta cells of the pancreas are able to produce insulin in response to meals, but at relatively lower levels than those normally demanded by the body. In type I diabetes, on the other hand, the beta cells of the pancreas can no longer produce insulin because they are destroyed by the body’s immune system. In a study aiming at quantifying the levels of sweet taste receptors in the upper gut of healthy and diabetic individuals, researchers observed that the levels of sweet taste receptors were diminished in diabetic type II subjects with elevated blood glucose concentrations [12]. This observation was consistent with previous results showing that type II diabetes patients secreted low levels of GLP-1 in response to a meal in comparison to healthy individuals [12]. Taken together, the decrease in sweet taste receptors and GLP-1 results in decreased sugar absorption from the bloodstream which contributes to type II diabetes.

In the pancreas, beta cells release insulin in response to elevated concentrations of glucose in the bloodstream. Unlike glucose, fructose, the sugar found in fruit, does not stimulate insulin secretion [2]. However, researchers recently found that fructose, when administered in concert with glucose to human and mice pancreatic beta cells, increased insulin release to levels higher than those observed when only glucose was used. The increase in insulin levels was mediated by the activation of sweet taste receptors in beta cells by fructose. Furthermore, inactivation of these receptors resulted in no release of insulin when exposed to fructose in the presence of glucose. Because excessive levels of insulin secretion have been implicated in the development of obesity and type II diabetes [2], sweet taste receptors in the pancreas are an attractive target for the treatment of these diseases. In conclusion, these studies strongly support an essential role for sweet taste receptors in maintaining an appropriate balance of glucose and insulin levels in the blood, and dysfunction of these proteins might hasten the development of type II diabetes.

What do we know about sweet taste receptors and artificial sweeteners? Sweet taste receptors in the gut and pancreas also “taste” artificial sweeteners, also known as non-nutritive sweeteners (NNS). While there is a general consensus on the contribution of regular sugars and sweet taste receptors in the release of gut and pancreas hormones, the effects reported for NNS, on the other hand, are at the center stage of much debate. Several research groups found that exposure of mouse cells to sucralose, the sweetener in Splenda, caused the release of GLP-1. Inactivation of the sweet taste receptors in these cells impaired the release of this hormone indicating that the effects of sucralose were mediated via its interaction with the receptors [7]. These findings, nevertheless, have been challenged by other research groups that did not observe hormone release in response to oral administration of sweeteners. Hence, whether NNS themselves trigger the release of hormones or not is yet to be elucidated. In the pancreas, NNS promote insulin secretion when administered in combination with glucose [9]. Since the body does not absorb NNS, a current hypothesis is that when NNS are taken in combination with glucose they might stimulate constant insulin secretion, which might lead to excess glucose being absorbed by the body. Rapid depletion of glucose from the blood might, in turn, hasten the development of obesity. Further research is needed to generate a more accurate conclusion on the effects of NNS in sugar metabolism and to determine whether these effects are primarily mediated by sweet taste receptors.

I look at Coke as a mixer for rum. A little bit of Coke, a lot of rum. I don’t recall ever drinking plain Coke. I don’t think I’d like it that way. Horridly sweet like all soft drinks.

I used to drink Coke ten years ago, then my genetic tendency towards hypertension kicked into high gear and I had to start watching my sodium intake. Now all sodas just taste ridiculously over sweet to me, and I’ve always thought the aftertaste of diet drinks was just horrid. So I mostly just drink water.

Well, anecdotes aren’t evidence, but I only weigh 115# and drank aspertame sodas for a long time (after a Navy dentist told me sugar soda and Kool-aid was ruining my teeth).

My former mother-in-law (a registered nurse) tried to claim aspertame was the cause of my epilepsy, though I didn’t start drinking diet soda until after I’d developed epilepsy.

I guess aspertame can time-travel.

I’ve read the stevia ingredient labels on packages in the stores. Every single one of them has sugar listed as an ingredient; sometimes sugar is the first one listed ahead of actual stevia.

I raise a few stevia plants and they are extremely sweet. One leaf goes a long way.

We need to come up with some basic mathematical rules for what can constitute a valid electoral district. The first one that comes to mind that would address obvious abuses like this is to set a maximum ratio for circumference (ie total combined length of the district’s border in km) divided by the area in square km. The ideal ratio would be that of a circle or π [ C / (2 π ) ]**2 = A. So we set some realistic multiple of that we can attain while also having every district contain the same amount of constituents +/- something like 2% and let a computer crunch it down to a best fit.

Germany gets around voting district issues by having two parallel systems. People have two votes to cast.

Half the ministers of parliament are elected directly as in America, but the other half is determined by percent of the overall vote: the share of votes that a party receives determines the number of people they can then pick off a list of candidates that they offer.

Germany also has a much larger parliament for its population than the USA: 631 for a population only about 1/4 the population.

A nation of 330 million needs a House of Representatives more finely graded than the current setup.

I’ve for some time thought that the Senate should be done away with. Just have the governors of all 50 States become a Board of Governors for the US, and have the various oversight agencies report to them on only the biggest stuff, and have said Board be the court for impeachments for the highest office.

Then, make the House bigger - grow it by the 100 seats gone from the Senate. A 535 seat House means fewer constituents per seat. Require House districts to be made by non-partisan boards.

What so many Americans don’t want to face is that our current Federal governance system is way out of date.

And it embodies the genocidal theory that created the US as we know it today. Namely, kill off or run off the natives, take their land, call it a “state” and give it two Senators to be part of the old boy club that runs the government that did the killing-off and running-off to begin with.

What I just wrote may sound radical, but it is a capsulated summary of how at least half of our 50 states came to be.

A board of Governors is really no better than having two Senators per State in that it’s highly disenfranchising to people in populous states. It would be better to set a second election where the entire country ranks their picks for the already elected House and the ones who get the most votes are promoted to oversight and leadership committee positions.

That is a bit like what the German Upper House, the Bundesrat, is. Each state sends its governor, secretary of state and whomever else the state legislature selects (the number varies, based on population) and their job is only to vote on legislation sent to it from the lower house, not initiate it.

I heard yesterday Grassley and the Republicans have no way to claim they were classified after Fusion GPS released a good portion of the contents to the media through tweets and articles. Also Glen Simson from Fusion GPS wanted them released so they can’t claim they are protecting the witness.

Districts are supposed to reflect the total populace, whether they are eligible to vote (registered voters) or no (children, non-registered adults, certain prisoners in jails, &c).

Basing on “voting percentages” is awfully difficult considering a person could vote one party this time round and another in the next. Moreover, in states where voters are overwhelmingly registered for one party would make that 60-40 split difficult.

I heard yesterday Grassley and the Republicans have no way to claim they were classified after Fusion GPS released a good portion of the contents to the media through tweets and articles. Also Glen Simson from Fusion GPS wanted them released so they can’t claim they are protecting the witness.

Moreover, the opening of the transcript says the meeting will be unclassified, and if Fusion GPS had any classified information to share with the committee, they could all go into an executive session.

For administrative purposes the Fed Government is divided into 11(12) regions based largely on geography. That reflects a lot of study done in the 60s to see how to effectively manage distance and span-of-control with XX Cent technology. We need about a dozen superstates with the ability to flex them.

My state capital is too far away already. If I had to go to the “High Plains State Capital” I really don’t want to be stuck with a trip to someplace in Idaho, Montana, or New Mexico.

People in Wyoming who live in the NW of the state have legitimate complaints about having to travel to their state capital in Cheyenne (in the SE near Nebraska).

Stevia is technically not an artificial sweetener. It is a plant extract that is sweet like sugar (well, sort of) but is metabolized like a carbohydrate.

Stevia rebaudiana is a plant, that would be Stevia. The crushed leaves are a dietary supplement in this country. Technically, you can’t add the leaves to a food. It would be an unapproved food additive.

Companies now are adding the glycoside extract from the plant, a sweet carbohydrate that is low caloric, Rebaudioside R, where R is a letter designating the sidechain moiety, typically A, D, M, but there are isolates going A to Z and more. The various glycosides, depending on side chains, have different flavor or lack there of, and as such, different uses in food.

And, technically, aspartame, acesulfame K, sucralose, saccharine, etc., are called high intensity sweeteners and not artificial.

So-called “serial immigration” is another racist dogwhistle.

Michelle Malkin, Laura Ingraham, Tucker Carlson, and other conservative pundits made it no secret that they see tens of millions of Latino Americans as “illegals” because maybe their grandparents or great grandparents migrated here with documentation. And they have the gall to accuse liberals of playing identity politics.

Organize counties so that very few people ever have to move their molecules to the state capital. I can think of only one time I ever had to go to a state capital, to examine some old aerial photos.

“Anchor Babies” is a loaded term for the Right to attack Latino-Americans by saying they’re not real citizens just because they are born here in America. Their biggest crime is that they exist.

I have to admit that I favor changing the Constitution so that birthright citizenship is only granted to people born here to citizens or legal residents, not just anyone born here.

But again, that should be part of a packet of comprehensive immigration reform. And there are too many conflicting interest groups to allow that to happen.

I have a Michigan birth certificate (that has the “white” box checked back from the days when states still did that) so for the moment I am safe. Service in the Armed Forces does not guarantee citizenship (see all the deported vets in Tijuana).

fine. I support comprehensive immigration reform

unfortunately, that quickly breaks down into cries of “deport them all” and “build a wall”

but true reform would involve a lot of things that people will never accept, like a universal ID card for all citizens and legal residents. It can be as simple as issuing photo SS cards in one version for citizens and another for residents.
It would involve reforming labor laws.
And it would necessarily involve an amnesty for people who have live here, obeyed the law and paid their taxes.
It would involve controlling our borders. A wall is not an answer in itself, some physical restrictions might be needed, but the main restrictions should be legal and administrative.

Other countries have mandatory ID for all citizens and legal residents: they are needed to register a car, sign a lease or an employment contract, enroll a child in school, apply for social services and are accepted ID for voting.
