Washington Post Headline: Trump Attacks Protections for Immigrants From ‘Shithole’ Countries in Oval Office Meeting

Politics • Views: 33,790

On one level this is completely unsurprising, because anyone paying attention already knew what was behind Trump’s jingoistic nationalism. It’s not like he tries very hard to hide it, after all.

But on another level… damn.

Trump attacks protections for immigrants from ‘shithole’ countries in Oval Office meeting.

President Trump grew frustrated with lawmakers Thursday in the Oval Office when they floated restoring protections for immigrants from Haiti, El Salvador and African countries as part of a bipartisan immigration deal, according to two people briefed on the meeting.

“Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?” Trump said, according to these people, referring to African countries and Haiti. He then suggested that the United States should instead bring more people from countries like Norway, whose prime minister he met yesterday.

How will the United States ever expiate the abject shame of allowing such a vile racist swine to occupy the White House?

The White House has already issued a response to this Washington Post story, and they’re not denying he said it.

Seriously fuck him, his supporters, and his enablers. This is racist and this is insulting to so many Americans. I’m glad they’re not denying it but the hacks are still going to try to claim it wasn’t bigoted in any way.

We will soon see pages of “serious” discussion of why the term “shithole” is entirely appropriate to describe the countries in question, not denigrating, disparaging or racist. Soon people will be claiming that some of their best friends come from shithole countries.

Why the fuck would somebody wanna leave Norway to live in the USA?

Let’s be honest. A lot of those countries have the problems that they do due to our policies. I was talking about El Salvador a couple days ago and how our policies really messed things up there. Of course, Trump doesn’t know about that nor does he care.

Note that we’re having this discussion while:

1. Avoiding the awkward topic of how much the service and manual labor industries love people from “shitholes” because they can be had for cheap, and can be cowed into accepting even less.

2. Avoiding the extra-awkward topic of Donald Trump’s own businesses’ affection for cheap labor from “shitholes” to knock down buildings and maintain golf courses.

When the major media are all outright using the word “shithole” without bleeping it, this feels like a turning point of some kind. Trump may have really stepped in this time. I hope. He needs to go.

49

When my Dad’s great grandfolks came from Ireland, Ireland was regarded as a shithole, Trump’s ideological ancestors complained that they were the wrong religion, lacked a work ethic, etc. Well they only helped built the country. Anyone proud of their immigrant ancestors should be appalled by what Trump said. Doesn’t matter where your family was from.

Only when the overall economy takes a dump will this country have the nerve and resolve to finally take care of this Trump nightmare by Impeachment. There is simply too much money to be made presently as the new unfunded tax cuts means several more months of inflated market activity while enriched multi-$$$ millionaires are actively raping the country.

Only when the business cycle turns (and it will) and the wealthy who control our country throw all pretense out the window (as their portfolios sink) can the Trump momentum be stopped. The Con is good only as long as the days are sunny and bright. The blinders will come off once the economy starts realizing that these Con Man tax cuts are going to have to be paid for, and it is the middle class once again taken to the cleaners by rich Con Man Republicans.

Uh yeah, he said, “shithole.” And then I came home to find the Washington Post broke all sorts of unwritten rules by putting “shithole” in its headline.

OMG, every single day it’s worse and worse. I can’t believe he’d say something like that, but then again, I know he’s racist, so yeah, we’re seeing the racist SOB coming out.

Heh I know. There’s actually quite a few successful food trucks that have turned restaurant. District Taco is probably the most famous. Now that one I know for a fact the owners are immigrants. And they’re consistently said to have one of the best bargain breakfasts in Washington and best tacos. There was a nice feature some months back about them. Trump is becoming his racist butler from Mar-a-Grifto.

On Wednesday, Senecal put up a post that read:

To all my friends on FB, just a short note to you on our pus headed “president” !!!! This character who I refer to as zero (0) should have been taken out by our military and shot as an enemy agent in his first term !!!!! Instead he still remains in office doing every thing he can to gut the America we all know and love !!!!! Now comes Donald J Trump to put an end to the corruption in government !!!! The so called elite, who are nothing but common dog turds from your front lawn are shaking in their boots because there is a new Sheriff coming to town, and the end to their corruption of the American people (YOU) is at hand !!!! I cannot believe that a common murder is even allowed to run (killery clinton) OR that a commie like bernie is a also allowed to also run !!!! Come on America put your big boy pants on—this election you have a choice—GET YOUR ASS OUT AND VOTE !!!! Thank you !!!!

What makes me sick about it? I know many people who are from these countries or whose parents are. I know people who work just as if not harder than native born Americans such as myself because there’s much more to prove if you’re not a native born American or if you’re a POC. When Trump says this or as he has said in the past, they’re not sending us their best, that’s an attack on these people, but it’s also an attack on me, my ancestors too often came from countries that Trump’s ideological ancestors saw as shitholes: Ireland in the Famine era, the Slavic countries of the Austro-Hungarian empire, etc. I’m proud to be an American but I’m proud of those countries too. Their beauty, their people, etc.

It’s not spin — it’s the absolute truth. His base applauds the use of these terms to describe immigrants they think are unworthy. They are white supremacists just like him — they embraced the label deplorable because they really are. Most of them support statues celebrating the Confederacy so why would anyone be surprised by this terminology to demean these people?

And we have the largest prison population in the world at over 2 million. More than China and Russia, and both of those countries are authoritarian.

And:

The U.S. ranks last in child health outcomes compared to 19 other Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development nations with similar levels of economic development and political structures, including Australia, Canada, France, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom, according to the study published in Health Affairs, a peer-reviewed health care journal.

I say put all these nut jobs on and show to everybody how screwed up they are.
And if Az. votes for him to be a senator, I know Az. is screwed up and will never go there again.
If we refuse to put the opposite viewpoint on those shows, we are no better than those like trump who are trying to suppress our 1st amendment rights.
Thats why I was laughing at people who were canceling their Sirius subs because Bannon got his show back a few weeks ago. Now Bannons views were put out for all to see via the Wolff book, now he is gone from Sirius.
Thats the beauty of the 1st amendment.

But if we’re going for opposite viewpoints, how about having Kyrsten Sinema on some shows too? The latest clip from MSNBC I can find of her is from 2014.

Not saying not to ever cover the miscreants, but giving our peeps some name recognition and airtime would be nice as well.

I knew Trump was a racist the day he “penned” the press and invited passerbys to taunt them. I think he was still running for the nomination.

“Mexican rapists” as the defining part of the start of Trump’s primary campaign was enough evidence for me.

While Hillary Clinton got more votes, “I didn’t vote” got plenty too (the folks who think both sides are equal or government doesn’t affect them)

I understand your point, and really Skip’s too. I understand being pissed off with Trump.

But I took it to mean in the case of racism 50% of the country approves, as posed.

I do not believe that. Just an opinion.

Let me use an example. Due to numbers, distribution and statistics there are some racists here at Little Green Footballs if 50% of the country is racist.

I do not believe that.

the other mind-bending logical amount of gall in this classifying “shithole” countries is the very fact that modern Libertarian and Republican types constantly bash countries like Norway and the EU in general as pretty much Communists with their all-foreigny Universal Health Care and cradle to grave Welfare. Listening to them, you might have thought that the “shithole” countries were countries like Norway according to 100% of the right wing forum and Fox News.

I guess “shithole” countries are only labeled as such for the amount of immediate argumentative points they can score in any given conversation and all of their reasoning eventually boiling down to which countries are “white” or not.

It doesn’t get much attention, but there’s an odd assumption buried in all of Trump’s immigration and trade talk. I mean, separate from the obvious racism.

First, he opened his campaign talking about illegal immigration, by talking about Mexico ‘sending’ people here, as if immigrants from Mexico are chose and dispatched to the US by the Mexican government, rather than being individuals with their own reasons for wanting to leave Mexico or come to the US.

In addition, he sees it as Mexico dumping their worst citizens on us, presumably retaining the good ones.

Second, when he talks about us having a trade deficit with Mexico of X billions of dollars, he thinks the GOVERNMENT OF Mexico receives the money, which they can then pay to the government of the US to pay for the wall.

I’m not surprised that he sees immigration that way, but that he sees trade that way is a bit surprising, in someone who is ostensibly a businessman.

First look at the file size to get an idea how much you have to shrink it. If it’s close try to re-save it in a tighter file format, so re save a .tif as .png and a .png as a .jpg. If already a .jpg you can lower the quality. Otherwise you’ll need to open it in a photo editor and resize it.

Far beyond this particular Trump excretion, this whole “shithole” thing is representative of a variety of American ignorance I’ve seen since I was a kid: that large tracts of the world are smoking holes full of peasants and warlords, and that all those places are frightening and to be avoided. But along with the performative “fear” is a kind of schadenfreude…exactly like how there’s folks that derive titillation from the idea of a world of baby-killing Satanists.

Lots of people will think this is brave or “honest” because they’ve already committed to the idea that everywhere else is worse. Like C S Lewis’ famous line about postulating a darker blackness, so as to seem brighter by comparison.

Mind you…these same folks apply this same morbid fantasy inside the USA as well, but just deny it. Which is why I always choke when there’s talk of “coastal elites.” As if every suburbanite I know hasn’t dropped a conversational deuce about who’s “white trash,” who’s in a trailer, et cetera.

Because he is not. He is a professional con artist.

I don’t care for the “coastal elite” moniker any more than the slurs about people in Dixie, the so-called “flyover country,” or Left Coast liberal elites.

All of those slurs are designed to divide the populace against each other.

Character and behaviour matter, not the particular acreage on which you live.

Far beyond this particular Trump excretion, this whole “shithole” thing is representative of a variety of American ignorance I’ve seen since I was a kid: that large tracts of the world are smoking holes full of peasants and warlords, and that all those places are frightening and to be avoided.

Yes.

I have also noticed a peculiar attitude from many Americans towards people who go to those places to help etc and especially if something bad happens. There is a vicious glee that something horrible happened to the helpful American.

Interwar Poland was not a shithole. My family came here because they saw the Nazis were about to invade their nation. They then fought for this nation to beat back the Nazis.

Now I’m here to beat back the Nazis in the country my family adopted as their own.

I made the argument last year that America used to be the country of people who weren’t satisfied with where they were. But now, America is old enough to have families that have lived hundreds of years in the same place. And interestingly, one of the best predictors of support for Trump was whether or not you’d moved away from where you grew up.

I argued that immigrants, who weren’t satisfied where they were and came here, as well as those of us who have moved hundreds or thousands of miles, to build our lives in new places, are more American than those folks unwilling to move out of their home towns.

I do know that after the ACW, my great great grandfather’s former CO from Maine had a bunch of land he’d been granted in Wisconsin and William Sr. bought ~200 acres off of him, screwed up the paperwork and ended up having to sell about 60 acres to come up with the money to buy it a second time. If he, Miller and others (Bannon prior) can discourage more people of color from coming here and staying here, job well done in their thinking.

If he can cut the support to “an island surrounded by big water” and say it is cheaper and better for America it would fit his dangerous pattern of thinking.

I love Mussadan curry myself. I love teasing my sil and her family since Peru gave the Western world potatoes and so many of my fave dishes have potatoes.

The first real exotic food I ever tried (outside of the bland Tex-Mex and other pseudo-foreign foods they serve in Indiana) was sushi, one of Mrs. Fish’s favorite non-American cuisines. Along with that, I enjoy the aforementioned peanutty noodles, and just about every flavor of curry I’ve ever tried. Samosas are a great snack, their only drawback health-wise being deep fried. And they’re one of the few vegetarian entrees that I enjoy eating.

I think we have seen what he thinks of the Puerto Ricans.

So, I think it is safe to say if they could be sent back and the whole country was no longer part of America, he’d be cool with it.

Not the first one to have that thought. One of the local newspapers ran a fake story saying that Trump was completing the return of PR to Spain.

(The day this story ran was the Day of the Saintly Innocents (rough translation), and one of the customes is to play pranks, similar to April fools day. Due to our close relationship with the US, this one has been on steady decline. Hatillo has a parade/festival that day.)

I’ve traveled and worked all over the world. Every time I go to India my mother is convinced I’m going to die from either a terrorist attack or smallpox. When I go to Kenya she is absolutely positive I’m going to end up in the middle of a civil war.

Yeah, this is where my limited knowledge comes in.

I know crops from up on the slopes from anthropological materials that study agriculture, but not how they’ve translated into current-day regional foods…and don’t really grok the regions. Most of what I remember is how cleverly the differing altitudes are made functional with crops with different soil, temperature, and light needs: hence all the varieties of potatoes and the various other tubers (arracacha, ulloco, ahipa, oca) that thrive in different locations…but also stuff like large-kernel corn that’s adapted to grow in valleys, where there’s a limited arc of sunlight determined by the valley’s geography.

That’s one of the worst side effects of Trumpism. Giving schoolyard bullies the knowledge that POTUS is on their side.

I’ll try to remember :). My favorite Peruvian dish FWIW is Lomo Saltado which is actually heavily influenced by the Chinese immigrants that went to Peru.

Time line is a little off but the spirit is right on. (The Catholic scares were around 1850) and the Chinese scare a little after.

So I mentioned that I enjoy curry of all flavors. One thing I was excited to try was Hyderabadi biryani. It’s basically the Indian equivalent of hotdish; yogurt-marinated chicken, rice, spices, layered together and steamed. After experiencing the real deal, it’s definitely my favorite, but you can’t get anything resembling real biryani here in the States, so I resort to lesser curries when I need my Indian fix.

Yep! I always combine the green and yellow sauces too. I love that green sauce. If I could find it retail here, I’d use it on everything like eggs and sandwiches.

Well, they’ll corrupt you and turn you all evil and librul and - if you’re especially weak-willed - make you one of THEM.

well…they can also make you look fabulous and turn you into a god in the kitchen.

But only if you are willing…

That was my favorite biryani too. Except I like it with lamb or goat.

But I’d bet what you experienced was amazing.

We can see from Walsh and Faux that the wingnut talking point is forming: Argue that it’s not the sentiment expressed but the words used that is causing the uproar, and so people need to “get over” their outrage over the use of “shitholes.” That liberals are making a fuss over that word, but secretly agree that these countries are a “mess” and so Trump is “right” to suggest Americans should want immigrants from countries like Norway.

Walsh should know that people considered Ireland a shithole at one point. It really pisses me off that these wingnuts have this pathetic attitude.
