re: #216 Quoth the raven, Covfefe.

But just saying that people shouldn’t come here because their country isn’t rich and fabulous like the United States, that’s offensive to the very core of American ideals. We welcome EVERYBODY, no matter what (well, except people that want to blow us up), in order to give everyone a chance at the life they desire.

I still recall a neighbor kid from when I was growing up (upper middle class, MD suburb of DC) that we don’t need anymore immigrants; “the melting pot is full.” He was probably 13.

I just posted this on my Facebook page. I mean every word.

I’m done.

“Does everyone comprehend how many of John’s players are African? That those kids you sat in the stands and cheered for are Nigerian, Kenyan, and from other African countries? It’s usually at least half. HALF.

How many of those boys are sons to us? That they are with us CONSTANTLY. That some of them call John Dad and me Mom?

43% of African immigrants have college degrees. 33% of Americans have one.

The things coming out of Trump’s mouth, out of his supporter’s mouths…if any of you support that, unfriend me RIGHT NOW. I don’t want you in my life. I don’t care if we’re friends, family, I DO NOT CARE. These are my kids being talked about. Do not EVER mess with my kids.

This moment, right here, is the line in the sand.

Don’t let the door hit your ass on the way out.”

I remember a neighbor who was a brother of a friend, very proud of his Irish Heritage as am I but constantly bitching about the “Mexicans.” My brother is still in touch. Says he hasn’t changed much unfortunately. That’s xenophobic parenting for you. I like to think my brother and I benefited since Dad had coworkers from all over when he was in the restaurant industry.

My dad is proud to be an Irishman. I wonder what would happen if I told him about the Irish history and that our forefathers, despite their impeccable military service history, were probably reviled the same way Trump treats Mexicans, and that may be why they left Pennsylvania for fish country.

And your rant inspired me to drop a nuclear bomb on my wingnut-infested Facebook feed (which, I notice, I have been spending less and less time reading; gee, I wonder why)…

Why does it matter what country someone is from? Like, what’s the point in judging someone by the place they came from? If they’re uprooting themselves and coming to America, they’re trying to make a fresh start. Judge the person on their own merits; if they’re able and willing to contribute something to our society, then they are welcome here. If not, they aren’t. It should be that simple. That’s how this country has always been, and that’s what makes America great.

One of the kids, Sam, died of an asthma attack last year. He was 27. He used to sit with me in the stands at games because he wanted to talk. We’d talk about everything: God, girls, school, race, everything. He was Nigerian and called me Mom. He lived with us for a while after high school so he could pay for college. His death broke my heart. I cried for months and still tear up when I think about him. I loved that kid with all my heart.

It’s funny but I remember how my FiL left Alabama after his service in the Navy in WWII because of the racism. His family, for the most part, stayed down there and stayed the same. But when Mary and I adopted from Vietnam we sent photos to the direct relations that were still alive. One of his sisters kept it on her refrigerator despite being perhaps the worst of the bunch. One day her daughter came by and started complaining about “that brown baby on the fridge” and the great aunt who never got to meet him was all “That’s my John and don’t you dare talk bad about him”.

I’m going to pay attention. Just because someone has a D after their name, doesn’t make that a good candidate. Nor does the candidate being a woman (cases in point: Tulsi Gabbard and that McSally person in Arizona, to name just two).

As I said on the previous thread…this does not surprise me with Trump in office. Sadly, I think we find more and more bad things happening to our systems. How could there not be with the way he is cutting this and eliminating that…all with “the best people.”

America is going to learn a lesson with Trump. Key will be if they take the lesson to heart and ascribe it to the correct cause, Trump.

McSally is a Republican. Gabbard though is a great example of that though. I don’t trust her at all and it troubles me to see a lot of liberals in news story comments suggest her as a good candidate. I hope it’s just that they only see her military record and youth and don’t know much more about her and they’ll know better when the info comes out.

In a statement responding to Abarr’s announcement, Montana Democrats blasted the candidate.

Not saying otherwise. It’s simply a story I found funny (eta: Funny Hmmm not Funny ha ha) in this case. Much like the story I told the other day of their racist father saving a young black man from the klan that wanted to kill him. Even within our faults and flaws people have a line where, to remember Camus, they say “No.” and do what is right. Perhaps only once, perhaps always after. People are complicated that way.

I’ve gotten rid of the worst of them, but I still have a cousin or two hanging around. And a couple of people who know me through my husband from Kentucky. Now they know very, very clearly where I stand.

My husband is the one that gets attention when he posts or tweets. He shared my message to his timeline and said, “Same for me. I don’t care who you are, get out.”

I have a nephew that has turned into a complete redneck Trump-lovin’ jerk.

My brother, his father isn’t like that. His other two brothers and one sister are not like that. In fact his youngest brother just had a baby with his African American significant other. (They plan on getting married soon).

Where did he change? The people he hangs with. He fell into their thinking and soaked it up. Now he rolls in it.

re: #45 Backwoods_Sleuth

I’m going to pay attention. Just because someone has a D after their name, doesn’t make that a good candidate. Nor does the candidate being a woman (cases in point: Tulsi Gabbard and that McSally person in Arizona, to name just two).

Yep. Here in south by dog carolina, we often have loons run as “Democrats.” It is hideous. One of the looniest, thank dog, just changed over to be a Republican, but there are still some kicking around. You try to discourage them and side-step them, but then you have years like 2010, when we had crazies for both Senate and House seats. (I will go to my grave crying SHENANIGANS—and have the spreadsheets to back me up.)

That was when all the media made much ado about Alvin Greene as our Senate candidate (which was, granted bullshit), and the utter incoherence of Ben Frasier being the Dem candidate for our shiny new House seat went unnoticed.

Frasier had no campaign site, no email address, and even the facebook somebody put up for him had his name misspelled. Oh, and it was his ELEVENTH primary run, and he was defending the Confederate flag, anti-choice, against gays in the military and for prayer in public school.

In 2008, he lost the primary 65-35 to an openly gay woman. Then, in 2010 (new district, but many of the same places) he often tripled or quadrupled his vote count running against a retired Air Force pilot with a lot of support.

I contacted multiple media peeps, with precinct by precinct anomalies and weirdness. Only a guy from GWU who had been quoted in a 538 article about Greene ever even got back to me and he lost interest pretty quickly.

Yeah who you hang out with. Your grand niece sounds adorable. My mom has cousins on each side of the family that married African-Americans. The one sadly was disowned by her father for it. She’s actually told me a lot about my Grandmother’s oldest half siblings whom I never met since they died before I was born. She and her daughter were welcomed as honored guests when they visited the home village in Slovakia.

The last 10 years or so has caused me to reconsider my definition of ‘good person’. I used to hang out on an archery/bowhunting forum (traditional archer and self-bowyer), and back then, I thought, “We all want pretty much the same thing, but Conservatives and Liberals differ on how to get there.”

Sure, there were some assholes who thought I was an awful person for being a Liberal, but mostly they got marginalized. We had healthy debates, but generally we treated each other with respect.

Then Obama was elected. And they went nuts. A lot of folks I thought of as ‘good people’ turned out to be totally racist types who said things like “Trayvon Martin chose the thug life, so he died a thug death”. or some of the more vile caricatures of Michelle Obama. People I thought of as more rational than the others there went total wingnut, right down to the ‘Bathhouse Barry’ stuff - while simultaneously also believing him to be a secret Muslim. The shit finally got too deep for me in about 2010. I look in occasionally, and it’s gotten worse.

So, how does one define a ‘good person’? Somebody who works hard, donates money and time to charity, is generous and friendly, would give you the shirt off his back if you were in need?

Okay, what if that person calls Muslims ‘Sand N*gg*rs’? Or agrees that all those countries where nonwhite people live are ‘Shithole Countries’? Or spouts other overtly racist bullshit? Still a good person?

Maybe it’s not as simple as ‘good people’ and ‘bad people’.

“John Abarr is a failed former-Republican House candidate with a revolting history of promoting white supremacy,” the group said. “His views have no place in Montana, and we condemn him and his campaign without exception.”

And what would also be useful is to have Tom Perez or Keith Ellison or somebody make it clear that the national Party wants nothing to do with this assclown, either. Better yet, make sure that there is an “official” - and supported - Democratic candidate in the primary. Preferably one without any KKK connections….

Not NOK, California. Fox told him he would have won the popular vote if you didn’t count California, so BOOM!

Back when I owned the Subaru, it started giving Check Engine alerts. You can’t smog-check a care with the CEL on. You can’t register a car with a delinquent smog check.

So we took it to the Subaru garage. There was a tiny hole in the head gasket, which was ever so slightly fouling one of the plugs, hence the CEL. No real effect on how the engine ran, no real increase in emissions. Just lit the CEL.

Cost to replace the headgasket was about 75% of the Blue Book value of the car. That led to two days of soul-searching before we finally decided to get it fixed.

To be fair, small holes in the head gasket turn into big holes in the head gasket, which lead to burning coolant (or oil in the coolant), which leads to bigger problems.

We had to drive to Virginia on Thursday, so I took the truck in for inspection and an oil change. I told my guy that when I got new tires put on the truck they told me I needed rear brakes and rotors.

They did all that, and also discovered that I needed upper ball joints and found that one of the stabilizer bars on the rear was rusted out.

Boom, a grand and change. But the truck drove like a damn dream to VA and back.

Last week, we had a Carpenter Bee in the house. Probably got in when we were letting Rango in or out to pee. I caught him* against the window with a drinking glass, slid a playing card underneath, carried him to the back door and let her go.

Today, a Carpenter Bee keeps *thunk*ing off the back windows.

I think he wants back in.

*California Carpenter Bees are sexually dimorphic. Females are all black, whereas males have lighter prothorax and abdominal segments. So I know it was a boy bee.

We took Mrs. FBW’s Sienna in for service last month. Turns out the front pads were practically down to the metal.

I don’t drive it very often, so when I drove it a month or do back and the brakes seemed not so great, I ascribed it to being used to the excellent brakes in the Challenger. Mrs. FBW, of course, didn’t notice anything odd about them because she drives it all the time and they just kind of got that way.

MAN, was it better after that!!! Kinda scary, in retrospect.

A comment from the John Scalzi post that was posted here last night.:

Evan says:
JANUARY 12, 2018 AT 2:28 PM
You know… I know this is coming from a place of privilege, but I’ve gotten to the point where his racist outbursts aren’t shocking anymore. His inability to restrain himself from saying hateful things has been used in court as evidence against the travel ban, so he actually hurts his own cause when he does these things, and I take some grim satisfaction in that, but otherwise it all just blends into the cosmic background hideousness.

But the word “shithole” suddenly being on every channel actually does shock me a little. I know it’s the wrong reaction to have - what he believes should be the story, not how he expressed it - but somehow that’s the bit that stands out.

I remember saying back before the election that even if I wasn’t a democrat and didn’t share her values, I’d still be supporting Clinton because of the two major candidates she was the only one who would go away and competently do her job, whereas Trump would never, ever stop trying to be the center of attention, no matter how desperately he had to act out to do it. Even if you’re conservative, I said, can’t you see how utterly sick of him you’re going to be before long?

And even so, I never imagined I’d see purportedly unprintable words showing up in every news channel chryon, and a discussion about whether that plays well with his base.

I know that isn’t, or shouldn’t be, the real point. But I guess it’s the bit that I’m still not quite numb to yet.

re: #159 makeitstop

We had to drive to Virginia on Thursday, so I took the truck in for inspection and an oil change. I told my guy that when I got new tires put on the truck they told me I needed rear brakes and rotors.

They did all that, and also discovered that I needed upper ball joints and found that one of the stabilizer bars on the rear was rusted out.

Boom, a grand and change. But the truck drove like a damn dream to VA and back.

I once read a column in Road & Track, written by the guy who restores old English sports cars for fun. He had a hankering for a Morgan, so he went to check out one listed in the classifieds.

As he went through it, he’d comment some compnent needed fixed or replaced, and the owner would respond, “Yeah, but you can get one from (some vendor)”.

Eventually, they had gone through everything and the owner asked, “Well, what do you think?”

The writer said it seemed like everything was bad on it except the steering wheel. “It’s a nice steering wheel, but it’s not worth $4500.”

I woman came in today to get a flat fixed on the bicycle I sold her a year ago. I was having trouble remembering until she told me it replaced the bike I gave her an estimate on. Then I confirmed my memory by guessing the color of the new one (she only brought the rear wheel). Aqua.

She thanked me for fixing the flat right then. I thanked her for trying the door even though I had left up the ‘Gone to get Coffee’ sign up.

I think we’ll see more of that as wingnuts pretend to be Democrats in an attempt to “ride the blue wave”.
Also, wingnuts can point to these assholes as examples of how Democrats are the real racists, etc.

We have to be very careful to out these people and prevent them from winning. As I’ve said before, two Larouche candidates won Democratic primaries in Illinois in 1986 because both the press and the party failed to warn people about who these candidates were. People (including me) opposed the standard party-supported candidates for the offices and were unaware of the background of the opposition candidates. I refused to vote in those races because I knew nothing about these candidates; too many others voted against the party candidate and then discovered the monsters they had selected.

I do like Khan’s comment after the “Pendragons” were rousted out:

Khan stood up and resumed his speech. “It’s a pleasure to be here,” he said, “even though we were distracted by the actions of what some would call very stable geniuses.”

Oh, that NAUGHTY Julian! He just doesn’t pick up after himself!

Staff at the Ecuador Embassy in London grew tired of the whiffing WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, who reportedly does not attend to his own personal hygiene.

It’s that lack of cleanliness, among other things, that fueled Ecuador’s recent attempts to end his five-year stand-off at the Knightsbridge embassy, the International Business Times reported.

“It seems he doesn’t wash properly,” a “well-placed” source told the news outlet, noting the issue has prompted repeated complaints from staff at the UK embassy.

“Julian ate everything with his hands and he always wiped his fingers on his pants. I have never seen pants as greasy as his in my whole life,” one of his closest aides, Daniel Domscheit-Berg, told the Times.

What a surreal feeling to think that within minutes your life could be forever changed if you lived through it at all. I loathe trump. This should not be our reality. And all the harm I’ve ever done
Alas it was to none but me
And all I’ve done for want of wit
To mem’ry now I can’t recall
So fill to me the parting glass
Good night and joy be to you all

[Chorus]
So fill to me the parting glass
And drink a health whate’er befalls
And gently rise and softly call
Good night and joy be to you all

Of all the comrades that e’er I had
They’re sorry for my going away
And all the sweethearts that e’er I had
They’d wish me one more day to stay
But since it fell unto my lot
That I should rise and you should not
I gently rise and softly call
Good night and joy be to you all

Fill to me the parting glass
And drink a health whate’er befalls
And gently rise and softly call
Good night and joy be to you all

La La

But since it fell unto my lot
That I should rise and you should not
I gently rise and softly call
Good night and joy be to you all

re: #369 The Vicious Babushka

I had a friend who baked a pie to enter in the MN State Fair food competition. He asked me to drive him and the pie to the fairgrounds. When I got to his house, he was in the process of baking a second pie because his first one hadn’t turn out perfect, but the second pie hadn’t browned to his liking yet. By the time he took it out of the oven (still not quite perfect), we had about 7 minutes to get to the fairgrounds. I knew the route with the fewest stoplights so we raced to the fairgrounds with a minute to spare, but I wasn’t sure where I was going once we got onto the grounds. I thought I’d missed a turn so I tapped on the brakes without thinking, saw my friend lurch, and then heard the splat as the pie hit the floor of my truck. We just stared at each other for a few seconds, and then my friend started laughing. I wanted to cry. He opined that the pie wasn’t baked to perfection so he probably wouldn’t have won anyway.

The parts of the pie that weren’t dirty from the floor mat sure tasted good though.

I remember the Cuban Missile Crisis a bit though I was pretty young. I don’t remember anyone having to take their kids into a middle room or basement and try to remain calm with them while thinking there is in fact a nuke heading your way. They didn’t know there wasn’t.

Sure there was worry and concern during the Cuban crisis.

Today, many people were saying their last prayers and thoughts…or thinking them.

That is bad. I can’t imagine. America should be pissed off.

And the thing is, what made it that real was idiot Trump getting into a dick measuring contest with Kim Jong-un and getting us all thinking Trump is that unstable and a missile strike is possible.

To be honest, sometimes I feel like things like this are just trying to find racism in places where it isn’t. I get it, racism is a deeply recurring theme in American culture, but sometimes, a hoodie is just a hoodie.

It’s complicated? From what I have read I believe that was the only place in the ad campaign where they used a black child to model any of the clothing.

Also I don’t feel like I’m a very good arbiter about what is racist and what isn’t, seeing how I’m white.

I think that last point is probably the most salient point, to be honest. I mean, sometimes I think people are being ridiculous about racism… but I’m a middle-class white male, and am thus literally the least qualified person on Earth to decide what is racist and what isn’t.

I have argued that all of the easy/obvious melodies / chord progressions have been used up and the job of a songwriter to come up with something that doesn’t make you say “Hey, didn’t so and so do that in 196-whatever?” is got to be nearly impossible.

Yeah, but … no generation ever wants to listen to music their parents, um, enjoyed themselves to. Not in their adolescence and early adulthood, especially. It took me till my 50s to start thinking that Frank Sinatra was not a waste of air. Likewise disco — the thing goes both ways in time. Punks hated 60s pop which of course I like, though I don’t listen to it much.

Actually nowadays the most-played artist from my collection is from the 60s: Bob Dylan, and not the old stuff either, but the 2017 bootlegs. There are probably those who couldn’t stand them. De gustibus and all that. Desolation Row with loud drums and Bob’s prophetic bellow/croak is just fabulous. Try to find the 11/12/17 Philadelphia gig.

Through most of the 70s I listened to AM radio (top 40, bubblegum stuff). I didn’t start listening to FM until about 1978ish so I was inundated with basically the best of the previous 15 years all at once. All of the crap (the new stuff of 1972, 73, 74 etc) that sucked had been weeded out so I didn’t really get the idea that every year has it’s share of junk, and then there is the stuff that keeps. By 1979 and 1980 I was starting to hear the “new” stuff, which can’t possibly compete against that collection of the best of the last fifteen years.

To me a good song, instrumental, movement, opera, whatever type of music can be good in the past, today and on into the future. It is timeless. I like the tune…I don’t associate it with a period of my life or a time of fashion other than remembering when it came out. If it is good to you and gets you off in any number of ways, it is good.

Appreciation for the older tunes is probably one reason some pop stars start recording the Great American Songbook as they enter their 40s and 50s. Linda Ronstadt is one example. Fact is, there’s a crapload of excellent music from all eras and like it or not, listening to your parent’s music as a kid influences your tastes as a listener and musician.

But then again, I lost a lot of respect for him years ago. For example if you youtube anything from him or the Faces in the middle to late seventies, he has no respect for his audience.
