I feel better for the future seeing the talent that keeps coming up. talent Less likely to be left in obscurity by the old model record label/big radio systems. For all that’s effed up youth is in good hands.

“They don’t want security at the border,” Trump said of Democrats Sunday night. “They don’t want to stop drugs. And they want to take money away from our military, which we cannot do.” “The folks from DACA should note, the Democrats are the ones that aren’t going to make a deal,” the president added.

Are the “folks from DACA” like the Man From Uncle?
Does this moron even have a clue what DACA is? (Remember, he wants American kids to be Dreamers.)

So yeah, if you know anybody in the military, federal, or civil service, best to give them a warning that after Friday, they’re either gonna be furloughed or working without pay unless Zombie-eyed Granny Starver and Yertle can get Nancy and Chuck to agree to yet another clean CR.

Has anyone followed the Van Helsing series?
I gotta say that Christopher Heyerdahl who play the Sam, a monster before and after the change. I gotta say, This guy deserves an award for the degree of creep he puts in this character.

Wow. We have a female Jacob Collier here.

My thoughts exactly.

Is it okay to say I like her vocals a little more than Jacob’s? They feel less processed.

And she has a cool breathy jazz singer style.

Loops are getting to be a thing no doubt. The digital way to be a one manperson band.

I have mixed feelings about the false alarm in Hawaii yesterday. I’ve worked in that “type” of critical control rm/command center environment for the last 30 or so years. My industry has a mutual enemy whose name is Murphy. I know him well. A couple of things. Testing of this nature should always be treated as live. Always. The fact that they didn’t have a 2 person failsafe is just what it is. A single point of failure, Murphy saw an opening and grabbed the operators balls.

Shit happens. It’ll be fixed. Shit wasn’t like this 13mos. ago.

I do have this concern. Management I think showed 100% transparency on the issue during the press conference, The head guy took responsibility for his team and their actions. I commend him for that. They are now working to remediate and harden their procedures so this does not happen again. Today the media and Pols got their blood and this guy was fired. OK, I get that as well. At the same time Hawaii has shot itself in the foot in the same motion. Administrator Vern Miyagi has vast Tsunami and volcanism emergency experience that’s headed for the door. Shit happens, some worse than others. I just hate to see all of us lose that type if experience and integrity.

I think recently there was talk of removing authority from the President alone to immediately retaliate in event of an attack on US. I haven’t heard anything recently but would like to think some (possibly unreported) action was taken toward that end as evidenced by Trumps continued uninterrupted golf game. ‘We are ruled by fools’: White House spent 22 minutes trying to mute conference call with reporters

[…]

“This White House can’t even run a f**king conference call,” one reporter on the unmuted line said to the entire conference call. “They don’t know how to mute their line.”

An unnamed White House official shot back, “It’s the illegitimate media that doesn’t know how to conduct themselves. They can’t mute their f**king phones. Mute your phones.”

Trump denies remark about Kim

[…]

Trump, tweeting from his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm beach, Florida, wrote Sunday morning, “The Wall Street Journal stated falsely that I said to them ‘I have a good relationship with Kim Jong Un’ (of N. Korea). Obviously I didn’t say that. I said ‘I’d have a good relationship with Kim Jong Un,’ a big difference. Fortunately we now record conversations with reporters and they knew exactly what I said and meant. They just wanted a story. FAKE NEWS!”

Trump’s tweet came hours after his White House press secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, uploaded an audio file on her Twitter account under the message, “Here is the official audio showing WSJ misquoting @POTUS.”

Earlier the same day, Sanders posted an image with a red banner that read “FAKE NEWS” and read underneath: “THE WALL STREET JOURNAL. FAKE NEWS IS AT IT AGAIN! FALSELY QUOTING PRESIDENT TRUMP.”

A community in Afghanistan awards Trump ‘Bravery’ Medal

A community in the central Logar province of Afghanistan has awarded the ‘Bravery’ Medal to the US President Trump for his recent stance against Pakistan.

The handmade medal was prepared with a total cost of $645 with the contribution of the participants of an informal Jirga in which around 300 people had participated.

Syed Farhad Akbari, a community leader in the province, on January 14 told RFE/RL’s Afghan Service that more than 300 people at an informal “jirga,” or council, of concerned citizens agreed to award the medal to the U.S. president.

[…]

This comes as the US President Donald Trump nearly two weeks ago criticized Pakistan in strong words for harboring the terrorist groups despite receiving billions in aid to support the counter-terrorism efforts in Afghanistan.

[…]

If only they knew that Trump doesn’t care about them. He only criticized Pakistan as a matter of expediency and his attacks on the previous administration.

its been barely a month since they passed the abomination tax cut so nothing’s had any effect yet.

they wont bring up, let alone pass a budget because it will highlight their blatant fiscal irresponsibility, and they’d need the dems to help get it passed and that means, gasp, “compromising”

Truck sales are hot, and a huge profit point for the big three.

GM unveiled the Silverado Saturday night, while Fiat Chrysler is to roll out the new Ram Monday at the North American International Auto Show. Both are meaner-looking and bigger, but much lighter. Each has sophisticated engine or transmission improvements that give them better gas mileage as they go after the F-Series.
Ford is countering that with its first diesel engine on the F-150, a 3-liter V6 that’s expected to get 30 miles per gallon (12.8 kilometers per liter) on the highway.

Style and performance are about the only ways the companies can differentiate themselves because quality has improved greatly, said Karl Brauer, executive publisher of Autotrader and Kelley Blue Book. “They’re giving the trucks more aggressive styling, which helps make them stand out,” he said. “Also they’re giving them verifiable increases in performance.”

The big push for all these improvements is to meet stringent EPA guidelines, IMHO.

Oh man…I am crushed this morning. I just found out one of my all-time sports heroes passed away yesterday…Dan Gurney. He was 86.

I’ve always said I loved auto racing and worked in the sport, etc. Gurney was The Man if you were an American racing fan. Sure, everyone knew Mario Andretti and A.J. Foyt, but Gurney was the Golden Californian and not only was he a damn fine driver that could drive any type of car, he built some of the greatest race cars ever too. He teamed up with Carol Shelby and formed All American Racers and they designed and built race cars that Dan drove.

Dan was so popular at one time, there was a grassroots political campaign “Dan Gurney for President.”

He was a leader. He founded CART (Championship Auto Racing Teams) and led the race teams into a split away from Hulman family control of Indy style car racing. He made the sport stronger until the sport was screwed up by the Hulman’s forcing control back to them in the late 90s.

I know 86 years is a good long life, but for those that followed him, this is tough.

I will always remember you Dan. R.I.P. Racer.

Germans do not use km/l but rather how many liters one needs to travel 100 km (hence, the lower the value, the better.)

30 MPG works out to 7.84 l/100 km.

i keep pulling these two out as the poster children:

- “Gorsuch’s fate is thus intertwined with Trump’s to an unusual extent. His name will always be a reminder of the degree to which Republicans debased themselves and their country to maintain control of the Supreme Court.
And
“EVERY Trump voter made the same Faustian bargain. Wealthy, ‘fiscally conservative moderates’ traded social justice, the planet, their daughter’s rights, international relations, safe gun policy, the health care of millions and much more for their own tax cut. ‘We are ruled by fools’: White House spent 22 minutes trying to mute conference call with reporters

They never end with the attacks on the free press.

The personality of Donald Trump is toxic, and everything around him turns toxic.

I bet my department at work has a better conference call system at my job than the White House has. Basically, we have to identify every person who joins the line for audit and risk reasons. Most people have passcodes, so when they come in, we see their names and the numbers they’re dialing in from on our web client. For our guest users, they’re supposed to record their names (some don’t) but I also have their phone numbers and I have the godlike ability to drop them from the call if they don’t identify themselves, and yes, I’ve used it. I also have other godlike abilities, like the ability to peremptorily end a call and put everyone on mute, but OMG, don’t do that, people get weirded out.

I’m spoiled rotten by our conference call system. It’s better than 99.9 percent of what’s out there today.

It’s an app provided by a vendor, but we had/have considerable input into how the app was built and is managed.

My employer also has a “regular” conference call system, but there’s no web front end, you can’t tell who is on the line, you have to ask who the person is after the beep indicating entrance. Whenever I have to go to one of those meetings, I feel like I’m talking in a dark room.

re: #181 dangerman

interesting comment by romney

i’d just observe that this is laughably not true:
“The sentiment attributed to POTUS is inconsistent w/ America’s history”

the 1917 immigration act had a literacy test and a list of “undesirables”

the 1924 act excluded asians

the act of 1965(!) was necessary to abolished the quota system based on national origin and establish one based on reuniting families and attracting skilled labor

and on and on
romney’s reading of “american history” is wanting

For the first almost 100 years, the United States’ only immigration laws were recruitment efforts; we spend oodles of money begging people to come here (especially farmers), offering subsidized transportation and free land.

The first immigration law that got fussy about who we’d allow in if they came on their own initiative was the 1873 Chinese Exclusion Act. It was… just what it says on the tin. An accurately named piece of legislation.

The 2nd immigration law was the 1924 act that based quotas on how many people of that ethnicity had been here prior to 1900 — they designed it that way deliberately to limit Italians and Jews. Because they were the “wrong” religion, and didn’t speak English. (The Irish were also the “wrong” religion, but they did speak English, they’d mostly been here since the mid-1800’s, and by 1924 they were also a significant majority of cops and firefighters.)

Of the 361 days he’s been president he’s visited a Trump property on 121 of them.

its the only way some of these places can generate any income

blowback

..thousands of people [are] logging in to give them one-star reviews, and to condemn them as shitholes. To take one example of a newly-written Mar-a-Lago review:

Place is a shithole. Staff tried to grab my pu**y. Only took rubles and every sign started with the word “best”. I wasn’t allowed to eat alone and had to have a man escort me. American flag bed sheets were made in China.

The club is down to 1.6 stars, on average, which is dismal, and none of the other properties is faring a lot better. If this whole presidency thing was supposed to be good for business, it doesn’t seem to be working out that way.

He won’t face a challenger because they’ll receive absolutely no help from the GOP whatsoever. It would be political suicide as it would be almost guaranteed that Trump would win the nomination and anybody who did it could kiss their future in politics goodbye (“He’s the guy who lost to Donald Trump!”). bloomberg

Over time, the test of who’s right will be the trend in investment. If the prospect of higher post-tax profits encourages firms to invest, the economy will expand faster than it otherwise would have — and the extra output will find its way, year after year, into higher wages and living standards.

Critics of the reform are right to doubt this, not least because the tax reform will add to public borrowing, which will tend to raise interest rates and the cost of capital. Meanwhile the planned instability and insane complexity of the new rules will drag on the economy even more than before.

Time, and the trend of investment spending this year and next, will tell. The second week of the new tax year is a little early to be declaring victory.

Wonder what the stats are for any of his sites.

Stats for this site (according to Similar Web, which, while not absolutely precise, gives us a pretty good benchmark) are holding pretty steady at about 400,000 visits/month, with the biggest traffic spike in August (probably around the time of the attempted repeal of Obamacare, which really motivated folks hereabouts).

What? Nothing from Russia?

We’re seeing an average visit of only 1:39, which seems rather low, as it takes me about 20 minutes just to scroll through the average comment thread first thing in the morning. Traffic is mostly from English-speaking countries, with an emphasis on the USA, although we do get a bunch of traffic from Holland (hi stoners!).

Most of the people who come here are coming directly - which makes sense, as there is a loyal community here that probably either has this page bookmarked, or just type it into the address bar on the browser. Surprisingly, LGF *does* get a lot of traffic from referrals, and we’ll check that out in the next report… (con’t)

Khal Wimpo (the extinguisher of tiki torches)  Jan 15, 2018 • 10:22:03am

Here’s where things get interesting, at least as far as analyzing the behavior patterns of the users hereabouts.

By far the #1 source of referral traffic for LGF is thezman.com, accounting for almost 4x as much as the next-highest source, which is beforeitsnews.com. There’s still a bunch coming in from Ace O’ Spades, which is probably the hate-readers, and then there’s also a bunch from dnserrorassist.com which I can’t make heads nor tails of, and am afraid to click through to, because that feels like one of the sites that could inject malware or what have you.

We come here directly, and then we go and tell Twitter what we’ve seen.

From LGF, people go to Twitter - probably to tweet out the links to the stories and clever things we write here (ahem! yay me!) followed by Amazon (those of us following the links to go shopping and thus donate some $$ to the Our Host), and finally, some center-left leaning content sites like HuffPO, PalmerReport and Slate.

I would have expected to see the Daily Beast or DailyKos in the mix somewhere, but I guess maybe they’re kinda their own thing, and don’t play as well with the non-doctrinaire bunch we have here.

The search terms are mostly the sitename, but there’s a bunch of traffic coming in for “democrat history” and something that looks like it might be related to “Shapiro” which I fear is something from Ben (“Baby Snidely Whiplash”) Shapiro.

There are no paid keywords, which is no surprise, because why bother?

Finally, when it comes to Audience Interests, we see News, Government and Law. No big surprise there.

Not sure WTF is up with mail.lippincott.com showing up as a highly relevant visited site, but I can understand Balloon Juice and Lawyers Guns & Money, so maybe there are some outliers.

The competitors are kind of a rogue’s gallery: Michelle Malkin, Powerline, Jihadwatch, RedState … I think these are being assessed based upon the traffic that use to come here in the Bad Old Days, which may also be influencing the ads that are getting served up here at LGF?

Visitors here are interested in the news? File that one under “No duh, Sherlock”

Might want to see what can be done about the computer-generated audience profiles, because I am sick & tired of seeing boner remedies and pictures of big-boobed girls over some kinda clickbait headline. And yes, I know that this is allegedly affected by whatever kind of web activity I exhibit, but I use a thicket of tracker-blockers, so this is what I get here at LGF by default.

Didn’t know about LoonWatch, though. I will be checking that site out, since it appears to be one of the few that is listed as “Similar” that I wouldn’t mind contributing my own traffic crumbs to…

If he was a good man before but outside influences have turned him into a bad man, then why in the world would you want to put yourself into a position where YOU can be badly influenced? I live in a small town that’s a county seat in King’s district and it’s often a scary place. My late husband was from around here and we moved here from Des Moines when our son was a few months old. The friends and couples we partied with are all various degrees of right wing. It used to be easier to overlook when Duane was alive…we had each other and would give each other a look when someone said something malicious or ignorant. After he passed away our friends would keep inviting me out and I went…for awhile. Without Duane as a buffer it was too much. I realized rather quickly that I couldn’t sit there while vile stupid bullshit was considered normal with these people. It’s been 8 years since he died, and almost 7 since I stopped hanging with all our friends. Funny enough, most of these people will deny up and down they ever voted for Steve King. I realize now that those same people are too fucking dumb to find their polling places anyway. I find myself wondering which of them may have been the one who kept stealing my Hillary signs.
There are some lovely people here, truly, but I’ve decided to stop pretending I don’t live in a goddamned shithole full of racist halfwits.
