Here we are on Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 2018, more than 50 years after the Freedom Rides, and the president of the United States is a racist.

Rep. John Lewis on Sunday said he believes President Donald Trump is a racist in the wake of racially charged remarks the president reportedly made last week about people coming to the United States from “shithole” countries.

“I think he is a racist,” Lewis, a Georgia Democrat and icon of the civil rights movement, said on ABC’s “This Week.”

“I don’t think there’s any way that you can square what the president said with the words of Martin Luther King Jr. and what he said about Dr. King,” Lewis said. “It’s just impossible. There’s not any way you can do that. It’s unreal. It’s unbelievable. It makes me sad. It [makes] me cry.”

“We have come so far. We made so much progress,” Lewis said of the country. “And I think this man, this president, is taking us back to another place.”

And where’s Trump on this day? Playing golf.

A bit simplistic, but probably accurate. What it sounds like, though, is that Saudi Prince MBS’s plan to “isolate” Qatar and put it on the official Saudi shitlist for its supposed over-friendliness to Iran has sputtered out into failure, and that Trump is trying (or more likely, somebody in the Admin who knows what they are doing has gotten Trump to do it) to put a good face on it by getting all nicey-nice with the Emir (we do have a huge base in Qatar, remember), and hoping that no one will recall the previous “policy”…..*

Van Halen, IIRC. However, there was a solid logic behind it: producers willing to cut corners with the M&Ms were more likely to cut corners elsewhere. Again, IIRC, they cancelled at least one show because the first alert was the brown M&Ms, and upon further inspection, they discovered that there were several security hazards.

Rev. Al on Nicole Wallace’s show a bit ago said Trump doesn’t realize how much he is hurting national security with all his racist comments.

He brought up Niger as his example. A country on the front of fighting ISIS now and where four of our military were killed. He said we count on Black spies for intelligence and they put their lives on the line for America to do it.

Why should they when they are one of the “shitholes” Trump spoke of?

And then the panel made other examples of people he has singled out to attack that are in other countries like the Middle East, South America and how it all hurts intelligence collecting.

Bottom line: Trump needs to shut his shithole.

Ha. Back in the day when I was writing requirement documents I would sprinkle lines like “If you show me this line prior to the review, I’ll give you a dollar” at random places in the document. In that particular case, with over 40 reviewers, only 2 people claimed the dollar. So I pointed out the line at the review meeting and then rescheduled, with a request that people actually read the document.

And at the next review session, I waited until several folks asked about the line that included “at this point we launch an ICBM at the offending site…”. At least more than 2 people caught that. ;-)

See, in different circumstances, with different people, this would be quite a charming story. Adding a human touch to politicians is often much needed, and something as simple as a gift of favourite candy is just that. But with this president, who behaves like a narcissistic, spoiled four year old at all times, demanding praise and treats in between lashing out and hurting people as much as possible for the fun of it? And with the party of Lincoln standing complicit and reveling in getting to destroy the fabric of America and oppressing anyone who isn’t a white male? It’s monstrous.

I was listening to NPR this morning and they had assorted people on to discuss DACA, one of them being Harmeet Dhillon. (She’s an Indian-born Sikh lawyer who moved to the US as a child when her father was finishing up his medical education. She grew up in the Carolinas, I think, and is now a prominent SF Bay Area Republican. Trotted out when they need a non-white face.)

Anyway, she offered some rather racist opinions and the whole conversation veered off the DACA topic. She doesn’t think poor people from other countries who “self segregate” when they get here have anything to offer. She also brought up the fact she lived in the South and saw signs saying “The KKK welcomes you” to whatever state it was-and the KKK was Democrats.
At first I was inclined to chalk it up to general GOP talking points, but then as I thought about it, I think it may have revealed an underlying philosophy. What she was saying was that we shouldn’t take risks (with poor people) and things don’t ever (and maybe shouldn’t ever) change (Dems=KKK.) This seems to be a bizarre stand for someone living in California to take. Risk and change are what we do. Perhaps it relates to being raised in the South?
In any event, the more I hear Ms. Dhillon, the less respect I have for her.

There’s a bit of consternation on the various Greyhound boards after last night’s season premier of ‘Victoria’. Eos, Albert’s beloved Greyhound, was played by a Scottish Deerhound. Eos was a lovely tuxedo black female, so I’ve been trying to come up with some way of making the joke that ‘a black girl lost out on the role to some hairy Scottish bitch’, but I wasn’t at all sure I could make it work.

Funny thing - it should be easier to obtain a black Greyhound than any Scottish Deerhound, because Greyhounds are a lot more common.

Could it just be they couldn’t find a greyhound that was trained to work on a movie set. Greyhounds are great lovable dogs, but aren’t exactly know for being easily trainable.

Well, to be fair - and I say this as someone who loves Greyhounds - they aren’t very bright.

They’re bred to be friendly and not prone to fight, and to have incredible focus and prey drive, but they’ll never be big on the Obedience Trial circuit.

Those are completely different things. In one case you are encouraging a dog to follow it’s natural inclination to chase prey and in the other you have to train them not to run when there is all sorts of crazy movie set stuff going on around them.

In one you let them indulge their instincts and in the other you have to get them to suppress them. I am not saying greyhounds can’t be trained but there is a reason most greyhound owners keep their dogs on leash.

Record music. It’s what you’d call a ‘demo studio.’ I can’t record live drums, but the little pad on the right controls a MIDI drum program that sounds pretty realistic. I can record guitars, keyboards and vocals well enough to hammer songs together.

I demo the songs I write so the guys in my band have a reference to learn them.

This is a very disturbing story.

Unfortunately, the reality of it is that his career is almost over before it starts, because of the nature of the field. If his institution has truly placed him on admin leave or probation, that’s something you have to report forever. In a highly competitive field, any sort of thing like that gives you a reputation for trouble, and there’s a dozen people just as qualified with no such reputation waiting for your spot. He’ll still have a job, the world needs good surgeons. But barring intervention, or (more likely) a sympathetic ear at another institution that doesn’t mind negative comments from fascists, he won’t advance in academic medicine.

I can’t imagine dealing with all of this on top of dealing with a 110 hour week and the endless bullshit of being a third year resident.

That’s not really because they’re untrainable, though. It’s because the prey drive is so deep, and built on natural instinct, that you can’t be certain they won’t bolt if a squirrel catches their eye at the right moment, and if they bolt, they’re gone. They could be across town in minutes, lost, no idea where they are.

One reads stories of owners who have had a Greyhound for years who was always obedient, always came when called, never bolted, till that one time when they did. And then, they are SO prey-focused they’d run onto a freeway full of cars following a squirrel or rabbit.

Stand in one place near them, and you’re likely to find yourself with one leaning against your knees for strokes. They’re a really convenient height for that. Sometimes I’ll be walking down the hall and find that I have a handful of dog face, when they want skritches.

Also a convenient height for taking food off the table. All food ends up in the geometric center of the table, in defense.

Although amazon spells it out clearly the show will be in their library after it is shown on PBS quite a few people are demanding their money back because they did not get the whole series. And even in my comment I stated that even PBS does not ship the DVD of the series until one or two shows have been aired.

They hate you when you’re poor and call you lazy but when you make it and start questioning poverty, they call you a champagne socialist (British version of a limousine liberal.). In the past, and sometimes in the present, Persons of Color have not been able to move into “certain areas.” I know because it happened to me and my ex here in Middle GA. When the neighbors discovered we wanted to move into “their” neighborhood, they pooled their money and bought the house to keep us from buying it. We could definitely afford the house, but they didn’t think we “belonged” in “their” neighborhood. Our realtor was Jewish, and he told us everything they said and did. When we moved into the home I live in now, we were the only blacks in the entire neighborhood. We were never invited to neighborhood events like barbecues because to associate with us on a social level would have given them “racial cooties,” I guess. It turned out that my daughter was the only kid in the neighborhood who graduated from high school and college with honors.

I was listening to NPR this morning and they had assorted people on to discuss DACA, one of them being Harmeet Dhillon. (She’s an Indian-born Sikh lawyer who moved to the US as a child when her father was finishing up his medical education. She grew up in the Carolinas, I think, and is now a prominent SF Bay Area Republican. Trotted out when they need a non-white face.)

Anyway, she offered some rather racist opinions and the whole conversation veered off the DACA topic. She doesn’t think poor people from other countries who “self segregate” when they get here have anything to offer. She also brought up the fact she lived in the South and saw signs saying “The KKK welcomes you” to whatever state it was-and the KKK was Democrats.
At first I was inclined to chalk it up to general GOP talking points, but then as I thought about it, I think it may have revealed an underlying philosophy. What she was saying was that we shouldn’t take risks (with poor people) and things don’t ever (and maybe shouldn’t ever) change (Dems=KKK.) This seems to be a bizarre stand for someone living in California to take. Risk and change are what we do. Perhaps it relates to being raised in the South?
In any event, the more I hear Ms. Dhillon, the less respect I have for her.

Dhillon sounds exactly like Dinesh. Remember, India has a caste system which treated people with darker skin as inferior and forced them into lower jobs. My guess is that both Dhillon and Dinesh were instilled with that prejudice and have done nothing to overcome it. They are no different than David Duke.

I could see the smartest thing for the DNC leadership right now being to call on the GOP to pass a clean CR without Dem votes. Promise publicly that they will not filibuster the bill or hold it up through any legislative shenanigans, but not a single Dem will vote for it. Then sit back and watch the GOP dissolve into bickering and quarreling.

kind gives a new context to that publicity thing posted here a little while ago: some sort of conservatives event and Dinesh was one of the scheduled speakers. His photograph was serious lightened so he looked almost white.

Wasn’t there a portrait of Jindal done the same? TBH I never considered colorism and India’s class system in explaining why Dinesh is the way he is. But that’s a good theory. Colorism does exist. I’ve learned a little about it in South America from my brother via his extended family. Just glad that my brother doesn’t care about that shit and he cares about people first and foremost.

They have no idea that if I were in an actual ghetto with them, I’d be just as scared as they’d be. I have zero experience in living in the ghetto, living without health insurance, and living in a home without a father, but many Americans think I do.

Skin tone is still important in China. Dark skin is associated with being a peasant, even if one’s color is genetic and not from UV exposure. So women (especially) anguish over having light skin, avoid the sun like classic vampires did, and buy skin-lightening applications, because men prefer lighter-skinned women, even if they themselves are not.

Aside from that cultural aspect, there is also noticeable disdain (and racism) toward naturally dark people, like Africans and South Asians, in China.You may for example have impeccable credentials and speak like a member of the British Royal Family, but if your ancestry is African or Indian, your chances of getting a teaching job are significantly less than if you’re a white Briton.
