Bannon Makes Deal With Mueller’s Team to Avoid Grand Jury, Will Be Interviewed Instead

Politics • Views: 31,221

We have an update to yesterday’s news about the subpoena issued to former Breitbart führer Stephen Bannon. Today we learn that he’s made a deal to avoid testifying to a grand jury (for now), and will be interviewed by special prosecutors instead.

Steve Bannon has struck a deal with special counsel Robert Mueller’s team and will be interviewed by prosecutors instead of testifying before the grand jury, two people familiar with the process told CNN. He is expected to cooperate with the special counsel, the sources said.

The sources did not say when the interview will take place or if the subpoena would be withdrawn.

“Bannon’s attorney told the House Intelligence Committee on Tuesday that Bannon would answer questions when he goes to the special counsel because executive privilege would not apply, according to one of the sources.”

How is this different from Bannon and his Trump-directed attorney refusing to answer questions in front of the House Intelligence Committee?

Hey Anymouse, have you heard about the “Cambridge Cannibal” who took up residence in Blair, NE, after being released from prison in England?

omaha.com

The guy wanted to do some pretty awful stuff and was convicted in England. He was released earlier this month, shipped back to the US (he’s a citizen) and registered as a sex offender. Then it was discovered he was a wannabe cannibal. Currently he is in the county jail but I don’t know the charges.

OK, so with this new development, Bannon will have his attorney present if he wants then? Wasn’t there some bullshit yesterday about his attorney being in contact with the White House and passing the questions to them for approval to be answered or not? How is this a better thing than Bannon before a Grand Jury? This sounds, off, for lack of a better word.

Holy crap. That article is bonkers. I’m glad Blair is on the other side of the state.

As for why he’s in the Washington County jail, the sheriff says he can’t say why.

Dale Bolinger, 62, has not been charged with any crime, Washington County Sheriff Mike Robinson said Monday.
“He’s here, but I cannot tell you why,” Robinson said. “Legally, I cannot say anything.”

Article is an interesting read. One issue is about what the true number is, based on how the mortality rate is calculated, which is probably enough to make most people’s eyes glaze over. But this bit probably will get a lot of attention:

Dozens of experts and advocates say maternal deaths are a symptom of a bigger problem: Too many Texas women — particularly low-income women — don’t have access to health insurance, birth control, mental health care, substance abuse treatment and other services that could help them become healthier before and after pregnancy.

That’s not a problem with how statistics are calculated, that’s a policy question, pure and simple.

Trump is a millionaire/billionaire in a very old school way. His net worth is tied up in real estate and the various entities that technically own that real estate. He’s not like Gates or Bezos, or even his friend Vince McMahon, whose net worth are tied to publicly traded businesses. Gates, Bezos, or McMahon need cash, they can sell some stock. Trump is relying on rental payments (and payments for licensing his name) less overhead; and worse for him*, the businesses aren’t publicly traded, so he can’t just sell some stock to get cash with the intent of buying some back later if the price drops a bit.

*Then again, given his business acumen, it’s probably good for him that he couldn’t buy and sell Trump (r) Stock… he’d be living in a Long Island tenement with thirty bucks to his name

I don’t think most people grasp that there are parts of this country where there is NO OB/GYN or even a pediatrician in town.

Logan, OH is one example. Religious assholes ran Planned Parenthood off a long time ago. The nearest OB is in either Lancaster or Athens, both a really far trip if you have no car or one on its last leg. Every time a kid gets sick, they go to the local hospital ER, which is not equipped to handle anything serious. They basically stabilize people and then send them to Lancaster.

Before my daughter left here and took the kids back to that actual shithole, I found out she never had ANY prenatal care for any of her pregnancies (6 in all, one stillbirth and one miscarriage, 4 surviving kids). NONE. She was also told (by who I am not sure, but my guess is a “crisis pregnancy center”) that birth control pills won’t work on her because of her “body chemistry”.

There’s no excuse for any of this shit, and yet here we are. We need to grow the fuck up as a country, this sort of policy or lack thereof is hateful.

Except that his supporters won’t care. A week or so ago when this all was a rumor, some idiot on FR dismissed the idea that Trump would have been involved with an adult film actress because he was a germophobe and wouldn’t do anything with an icky porn star.

This, of course, doesn’t even come close to explaining how VD was his personal Vietnam, but it was good enough for the Freepers.

And of course he will be saying his lawyers are going to sue Daniels and In Touch.

150
goddamnedfrank  Jan 17, 2018 • 1:30:55pm

Trump got an unasked for second opinion on his health and as I suspected it’s not good:

Dr. Ronny L. Jackson, a rear admiral and the White House physician, said Tuesday in his report on the president’s medical condition that Mr. Trump was in “excellent” cardiac health despite having an LDL cholesterol level of 143, well above the desired level of 100 or less.

Dr. Eric Topol, a cardiologist at the Scripps Research Institute, disputed that rosy assessment. He said on Wednesday that the most alarming fact is that the president’s LDL levels remain above 140 even though he is taking 10 milligrams of Crestor, a powerful drug that is used to lower cholesterol levels to well below 100.

“That’s a really high LDL,” Dr. Topol said, echoing the concerns of other heart experts who reviewed Dr. Jackson’s report. “We’re talking about a 70-plus-year-old man who is obese and doesn’t exercise. Just looking at the lab value, you would raise a big red flag.”

He added: “I would never use the word excellent health. How you could take these indices and say excellent health? That is completely contradicted.”

Thing is those counties 90 miles south of your twenty, some of them went 80% for Fuckface Von Clownstick. It was the cities on the Front Range and the resort counties that made it blue. Hell, in 2014 those counties straight put up secession from Colorado to a vote, which narrowly lost.

I remember that secession vote. That was hilarious and all those farmers out east would be royally screwed by it (land cut out, subsidies gone, water issues) but they bought the line “Denver Democrats make you pay taxes” (or something like that).

Oh wow. Trump, in new interview, says Obama, Bush and Clinton must have left him the North Korea problem because they knew he had the best brain, as evidenced by his score on the Montreal Cognitive Assessment.

trump scored “a hundred” on a 4th grade test (not even that, i know)
just based on the Flesch-Kincaid Scale published in the last few days, obama and clinton are talking at a 9th grade level at least, bush in 7th

so trump can distinguish a picture of a ducky from a picture of a horsey

The NYT is simply engaging in its core mission as the steward of American culture. I once believed this was journalism, but I was wrong. The NYT, and the rest of American media collectively, is maintaining what Charles Blow so eloquently said: the privilege of white males to be wrong yet still be right. When white men have done something awful, either individually, like a young man on a shooting spree, or collectively, like endorsing a dictator, the NYT must go on a search for why this happened, and will not rest until it has found a reason that excuses the sin and blames it on something else.

It’s that absolute fear of the dreaded “liberal media” label that keeps them coming back to trying to “reach out” to conservatives while kicking the rest of their readers in the balls any time they have the temerity to complain. MSNBC did the same thing during the Bush years when they did things like shitcan Phil Donahue over his anti-war views, and seem to be doing again with their new round of arch-conservative hires. They continue to think that, maybe this once, just this once, they’ll finally get those folks trashing them as ‘liberal media’ and ‘fake news’ to respect them. Maybe just this once.

But fuck anyone who criticizes them from the left, how dare they question their journalistic practices ever…

I don’t get it either. I understand why it’s an emotional issue for Cuban-Americans such as yourself but we not only dealt with communism in Romania, we were on good terms with them. If Anti-Castroism was backed up by a consistent opposition to authoritarian government, I could respect it.

Holy smokes! I just tried singing along with the guitar solo on Smoke on the Water for the first time in years. When I still had a 25 year-old voicebox I could hit everything. I’m happy to report that at 52, I can manage everything but the climactic high notes towards the end. Not bad for an old duffer.

Trump fans consume a lot of media. Kissing their asses = page clicks.

That might be true, but I don’t know how true it really is. Certainly, from a purely economic sense, it wouldn’t make sense to compete for the same white middle class people that CNN and FOX compete for. I think it’s the same thing that drives irrational fear of right wing boycotts - America has pushed this paradigm of the dominance of white male culture over all else for so long that it has come to believe its own hype. American media acts as if the only opinions that truly matter are those of white middle class men, and this becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

We replaced the inflow but not the outflow pipes here so of course that’s what just had a ton of corrosion and buildup that needed to be cleaned out.

Thankfully it only took the hour minimum and I can resume doing laundry.

This is the media narrative that is getting all the play now: “Democrats considering/talking about/forcing shutdown.” Why? Because, according to the “liberal” media, the DNC is causing a shutdown by not helping the GOP to avoid the fallout from Trump nuking the bipartisan DACA agreement.

Oh, and the GOP threw CHIP reauthorization into their funding bill, so look forward to the media taking up their talking point that the DNC is “voting against” healthcare for children. While totally ignoring that the GOP would not touch the matter for months and is only now taking it wants to attract vulnerable Dems to vote for their bill.

John Kelly…truth out…and toots his own horn.

WaPo - Kelly calls some of Trump’s campaign pledges on immigration, wall ‘uninformed,’ meeting attendees say

White House Chief of Staff John F. Kelly told Democratic lawmakers Wednesday that Mexico will never pay for a wall built by the United States along the entire stretch of the U.S.-Mexico border and that some of Donald Trump’s campaign promises on immigration were “uninformed,” according to lawmakers who attended the meeting.

The remarks put Kelly at odds with President Trump, who has repeatedly vowed to build a border wall that will be paid for by Mexico rather than U.S. taxpayers. Kelly’s statements also add to the mixed signals on immigration sent by the White House in the months since Trump in September announced the end of an Obama-era program protecting young immigrant “dreamers.”

Democrats and Republicans have warned in recent days that Trump is not clearly stating what he wants as part of a deal to replace the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA, and bolster security along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Kelly’s comments were made in a closed-door session at the Capitol with members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and House Minority Whip Steny H. Hoyer (D-Md.). This account of the meeting is based on notes taken by two lawmakers in the room that were confirmed by two additional lawmakers in the room and one senior aide in attendance.

White House aides did not return requests for comment. In an interview with Fox News on Wednesday evening, Kelly confirmed his comments, saying that “there’s been an evolutionary process that this president has gone through” on immigration policy.

“He has evolved in the way he looks at things,” Kelly told Fox. “Campaign to governing are two different things, and this president has been very flexible in terms of what’s in the realm of the possible.”

As the meeting began, Kelly said he had asked to meet with the group at the urging of House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), who has been in frequent contact with Kelly over the past several months and told him that the group is critical to reaching a deal.

Hoyer told Kelly later that the views expressed by lawmakers in the room represent “the will of the Democratic Caucus” — a reminder that House Democrats overwhelmingly support protecting dreamers and strongly oppose Trump’s calls for stricter border protections.

“Certain things are said during the campaign that are uninformed,” Kelly said.

“One thing is to campaign. Another thing is to govern. It’s really hard,” he added later.

“A concrete wall from sea to shining sea” is not going to happen, Kelly said. Instead, “a physical barrier in many places” is what the administration is requesting. Kelly used the term “physical barrier” several times during the meeting, attendees said.

“Concrete wall is not a realistic solution in many places,” Kelly said, noting that topography, among other issues, makes building a wall difficult along certain parts of the 2,100-plus-mile border between the United States and Mexico.

Instead, “we need 700 more miles of barrier,” Kelly said — a concession that a physical barrier does not need to stretch the entire length of the border.

“Concrete wall would be good in only certain places,” he added, saying that manpower and drone technology should suffice in some parts.

Kelly also said that there will be no wall “that Mexico will pay for.”

In the Fox interview, Kelly said that the administration is pursuing ways to reap funding for wall construction through the renegotiation of NAFTA.

“In one way or another, it’s possible that we could get the revenue from Mexico, but not directly from their government,” he said.

After serving as homeland security secretary and commander of U.S. military forces in Latin America, Kelly told lawmakers that he has helped Trump “evolve on issues of the wall.”
