Repost but Let it be remembered that MLK was an ordained minister. There’s a lot of legit gripes with religion to be had but religion like ideology is ruined not by Gods or non Gods but men and women. I choose not to believe but if religion guides people like William and other believing Lizards to do good, I can’t get in their way. I just wish and I know they do respect my agnosticism not as an attack on their faith but another perspective in understanding this world of ours.

I don’t know, I was raised Episcopalian, and we didn’t get that memo either. I have to say that, even though I left it long ago, the Episcopal church is about as close to a YMMV faith as I know of. No Catholic guilt, no Baptist hellfire, no evangelical end times. Also no bullshit about how the “wine” in the Bible was really grape juice. OTOH, listening to an Episcopal congregation try to sing hymns is like listening to a hundred gerbils rustling sawdust.
The issue is not whether the church holds an official position. It’s whether you’re part of the “in group” or “out group.”
Non-believers stand in direct opposition (by existing) that you need faith without evidence. As such, we must be painted as having (some) god in us to impute morality or love in us.
It is a conflation by the believer in what they believe with who they are. An attack on the position is incorrectly perceived as an attack on the person, even if there is no attack at all other than existing.
There are plenty of people here who didn’t vote for me because I am an atheist and no other reason. While I am not due any votes at all, my lack of belief without evidence was sufficient regardless of any other thing I stood for.
That was from people who know I am not a criminal or whatnot and mow my lawn and pay my taxes and bills on time.
You can see endless videos on YouTube, listen to endless pastors of all faiths attacking us as immoral (or in the case of President GHW Bush wondering why we should be allowed to be citizens).
The average believer who will simply accept an atheist in his or her midst without trying to convert is very small in my experience.

Two foreign allies of President Donald Trump — the face of Brexit and founder of WikiLeaks — may have had multiple, previously undisclosed meetings during the 2016 presidential campaign. In November testimony to the House Intelligence Committee that was made public Thursday, Glenn Simpson, founder of private intelligence firm Fusion GPS, said he’d heard reports that Brexit leader Nigel Farage provided data to WikiLeaks’ Julian Assange.
“I’ve been told and have not confirmed that Nigel Farage had additional trips to the Ecuadoran Embassy than the one that’s been in the papers and that he provided data to Julian Assange,” Simpson testified.
Simpson, whose firm assembled the so-called Trump-Russia dossier, added that the data came in the form of a thumb drive.
Farage is known to have made a trip to the embassy in March 2017 to meet with Assange, who has been accused of working with Russian hackers to release stolen emails and other material intended to damage Hillary Clinton’s campaign. The former UKIP party leader, who campaigned on Trump’s behalf, was identified as a “person of interest” in the federal investigation into Russia’s election interference in a Guardian report published last summer.

Ideas have absolutely no stability. None. Big Ideas are even more volatile, because you can add to, subtract from, and redefine the subsidiary concepts.

The chaining of emotion to ideas—and especially Big Ideas—makes the situation even worse. At every moment, there’s the chance that someone will choose {A is what I feel right now} not {A is A}. Cynics will do this intentionally; leaders will do this as a rhetorical tactic; true believers will do it unconsciously because they’ve merged their ego with the ideals.
Every big concept can, has, and will be routed towards heads on pikes because people don’t change.

Since I’ve already pointed out twice today that I’m not religious, I don’t know why you’re addressing this to me. But since you are, I’ll have to say that in my experience, atheists seem to be at least as ardent to “convert” believers as vice versa.
It was actually a really cool scene seeing my two coworkers, both law students who are immigrants giving each other advice on the bar. Here are two people from two totally different places working together on a common goal. That really is part of why I love this country. In a lot of our country, old feuds don’t matter. I despise Trump because he’s ruining a lot of what makes this country truly great.

I think after 2004,where he got 40% of the Hispanic vote, he saw a chance to do what he could to make sure the GOP wasn’t reviled in Hispanic communities the way it was and is in African American ones. And remember his own sister in law is an immigrant. But I don’t know. Of one thing though there is no doubt, the GOP and American right have grown far more nativist under Trump. They’re not even doing “We’re anti illegal immigration” but attacking all immigrants and PoC.

That is happening in a number of places; in Scotland, where my sister-in-law had to travel from Helensburgh into Glasgow, over 30 miles.
There is still a maternity ward in Bingen, Germany, but the intensive care ward for babies has been moved to Bad Kreuznach; only some ten miles away, but if there is a problem with the child, they only take the baby and leave the mother in Bingen…

Sanctity of life doesn’t really even extend to the unborn. They’re just antiabortion. It’s not as though they’re clamoring for prenatal care, supplemental nutrition for mothers and advocating for more money for research and treatment of birth defects and genetic abnormalities. They just want the fetus carried to term (without having to chip any money to get to that point) even if the end result is a dead baby that spent it’s entire fleeting life in agony and bankrupt parents.

Sanctity of life doesn’t really even extend to the unborn. They’re just antiabortion. It’s not as though they’re clamoring for prenatal care, supplemental nutrition for mothers and advocating for more money for research and treatment of birth defects and genetic abnormalities. They just want the fetus carried to term (without having to chip any money to get to that point) even if the end result is a dead baby that spent it’s entire fleeting life in agony and bankrupt parents.

Thanks guys. It’s frustrating and I know y’all don’t want to hear about my inner dramas. Just sucks when you thought you knew someone but you really didn’t in many a way right or worse that maybe it was always there and you overlooked it? I’m fortunate that my immediate family is against this mess. of an administration. In fact, Mom seems more aware of her immigrant grandparents with all the attacks on immigrants, learning about their lives from my research, and having a first generation American granddaughter too. My closest brother in age has revealed himself to be a man of great empathy for those different than him too. He’s been to parts of Africa that Trump would call a shithole and made friends with the people there and showed a profound respect for them and their culture.

Considering the House has gone into recess, I can’t foresee any scenario where Trump avoids a shutdown without the DNC knuckling under and voting for the CR bill. Any changes would mean sending the bill back to the House, same with the Senate passing their own bill. And any “deal” made with Trump personally will be worthless.

I agree: chronic carping from portside about Schumer aside, he’s done (IMO) a bang-up job keeping the Senate Dems together: Harry Reid was, all things considered a better Leader, but, as you say, it’s mainly a matter of style. I think Reid, if he were still around, would have gone to see Trump and work out the same sort of deal (i.e. chumping The Yam and the GOP big-time) but insist on delivering a figurative kick-in-the-balls to Mitch McConnell - and any stray GOPers in the way - in the process. Chuck, I think, doesn’t care as much about that: but as long as the results are the same, who cares?

You could start by telling him that the hate and ignorance he posts online makes the world worse, and could encourage unstable people to do terrible things. He may cut you out of his life if you criticize his poor judgement, or he may (long shot) straighten out.

She was good at keeping those things hidden from me. Probably why it ended, she got tired of hiding it. Have since heard things about her that make me ask if it is the same person they are talking about.

I think you seem like a good man and I’d be proud to hang with you. Thinking things through is always a good idea, and it is brave to ask for other perspectives. This dark time will pass. Remember, the expression of “brother against brother” in the U.S. Civil War wasn’t a cliché, they were resigned to kill each other. I wish the right wing powers had not poisoned the well so bad.

The question I ask is: if the call came out from FOX and the administration that Hillary supporters/Hispanics/whatever were threats to the nation and should be reported to the authorities for close observation, would they report their neighbours? Would they report their friends? Would they report me?
This is hypothetical, but not as far-fetched a scenario as one might think. FOX throws offhand rhetoric that is perilously close to this every day. If you find my posts where I tell someone else what to do, let me know so I can apologize. I do try to say what I have done. I don’t know anyone else’s situation. If the strength of my opinions seems to be me telling someone what to do, that is not my intent. My intent is to strongly state my perspective. As for denying, I would deny that anyone I know would commit violence, because that is the normal perspective, to deny that anyone in our circle could do bad things. However, I do assert that recent evidence shows that people who engage in extreme social media postings in fact do commit violence. But rather than suggest that HW’s friend could commit violence- an assertion without basis and which would be denied rightfully by HW- I simply indicate that people posting unbased rightwing memes can cause others to act out.
I’ve been thinking about this a lot as I read about the rise of the Third Reich too. There’s a terrific book I just read earlier this winter called Winter about these two German brothers. One joins the NSDAP and the other becomes Anti-Nazi. You know that going in but you don’t know which brother goes which way until the middle of the novel.

I brought it up because there was some discussion about a past exchange of posts that really upset a long time member here.
I understand a lot of your points, but you have to give other people room to make decisions, especially when it comes down to family and real friends.
Plus, if you cut people off, you eliminate doing good by trying to change them. Sure, some are hopeless, but the right thing to do is try to change them. If there is no hope and it is very evident, then staying away can be a good thing too.
I know, I have an older brother that I avoid because it does his wife and others in our family no good to see him get all worked up. Call it keeping the peace. We all have tried to ease him down, but he sees himself as the family leader and cannot be questioned. So we gave up questioning. It makes me sad. But it was my/our decision.
I wouldn’t want someone on the ‘net tell me I should do this or that. It’s too personal.

I have a thought: You could explain that you find his views on immigration, race, and poverty so abhorrent that you need to keep politics out of your relationship to be able to stay friends.
