I seem to remember this is a meme from earlier in the Trump administration, but I’m struggling to remember what it was. Something to do with a memo ordering the Deep State or something.

Repost but Let it be remembered that MLK was an ordained minister. There’s a lot of legit gripes with religion to be had but religion like ideology is ruined not by Gods or non Gods but men and women. I choose not to believe but if religion guides people like William and other believing Lizards to do good, I can’t get in their way. I just wish and I know they do respect my agnosticism not as an attack on their faith but another perspective in understanding this world of ours.

re: #125 William Lewis

Hitchens was too busy hating to notice he was as good a poisoner as any religious person. But considering it’s fundamentalism far more than religion per se that is doing the poisoning, perhaps that’s not especially surprising?

Methodists aren’t fundamentalists.

It would be fascinating to hear how Hitches was “poisoning” anything by attacking unfounded assertions of tens of thousands of gods, all without evidence, but I really do need to get to bed.

re: #124 whitebeach

I don’t know, I was raised Episcopalian, and we didn’t get that memo either. I have to say that, even though I left it long ago, the Episcopal church is about as close to a YMMV faith as I know of. No Catholic guilt, no Baptist hellfire, no evangelical end times. Also no bullshit about how the “wine” in the Bible was really grape juice. OTOH, listening to an Episcopal congregation try to sing hymns is like listening to a hundred gerbils rustling sawdust.

The issue is not whether the church holds an official position. It’s whether you’re part of the “in group” or “out group.”

Non-believers stand in direct opposition (by existing) that you need faith without evidence. As such, we must be painted as having (some) god in us to impute morality or love in us.

It is a conflation by the believer in what they believe with who they are. An attack on the position is incorrectly perceived as an attack on the person, even if there is no attack at all other than existing.

There are plenty of people here who didn’t vote for me because I am an atheist and no other reason. While I am not due any votes at all, my lack of belief without evidence was sufficient regardless of any other thing I stood for.

That was from people who know I am not a criminal or whatnot and mow my lawn and pay my taxes and bills on time.

You can see endless videos on YouTube, listen to endless pastors of all faiths attacking us as immoral (or in the case of President GHW Bush wondering why we should be allowed to be citizens).

The average believer who will simply accept an atheist in his or her midst without trying to convert is very small in my experience.

Yes and the American Right vowed that there would never be another MLK coming out of a church. Which is why in the infamous Powell memorandum they outlined what would eventually become the Christian Coalition and Moral Majority which was initially funded by the Right Wing Hunt family in Texas, The Coors in Colorado and Richard Mellon Scaife in Pennsylvania.

I agree but I don’t think the religious right should influence or force our positions on faith just as militant atheist regimes should not be allowed to slander all non believers as being akin to Mao, Stalin, or Pol Pot.

And the plot thickens even more now…

Two foreign allies of President Donald Trump — the face of Brexit and founder of WikiLeaks — may have had multiple, previously undisclosed meetings during the 2016 presidential campaign. In November testimony to the House Intelligence Committee that was made public Thursday, Glenn Simpson, founder of private intelligence firm Fusion GPS, said he’d heard reports that Brexit leader Nigel Farage provided data to WikiLeaks’ Julian Assange.

“I’ve been told and have not confirmed that Nigel Farage had additional trips to the Ecuadoran Embassy than the one that’s been in the papers and that he provided data to Julian Assange,” Simpson testified.

Simpson, whose firm assembled the so-called Trump-Russia dossier, added that the data came in the form of a thumb drive.

Farage is known to have made a trip to the embassy in March 2017 to meet with Assange, who has been accused of working with Russian hackers to release stolen emails and other material intended to damage Hillary Clinton’s campaign. The former UKIP party leader, who campaigned on Trump’s behalf, was identified as a “person of interest” in the federal investigation into Russia’s election interference in a Guardian report published last summer.

Mueller: The President laundered Russian money which was then passed onto GOP leaders for use in the election. In addition, the NRA also took Russian money, giving it to Republicans. For these efforts, Trump has weakened NATO, our relationship with Pacific countries, and has put our military in a position of not being able to respond to Russian threats in Europe at the request of Vladimir Putin.

27%ers: But there’s no collusion right? Thus, you can’t impeach him.

Ideas have absolutely no stability. None. Big Ideas are even more volatile, because you can add to, subtract from, and redefine the subsidiary concepts.

A…is not necessarily A.

The chaining of emotion to ideas—and especially Big Ideas—makes the situation even worse. At every moment, there’s the chance that someone will choose {A is what I feel right now} not {A is A}. Cynics will do this intentionally; leaders will do this as a rhetorical tactic; true believers will do it unconsciously because they’ve merged their ego with the ideals.

Every big concept can, has, and will be routed towards heads on pikes because people don’t change.

They are just in chaos right now, trying to figure out which way to spin the increasingly politically murderous information being dribbled out by actual sources with actual information on this man’s activities. All of the spinning right now has nothing to do with Putin, and everything to do with ancillary bullshit that the Drumpf campaign did to desperately try to plug ugly holes in their Candidate’s fuck-ups.

Meanwhile, Mueller is smiling and pulling strings.

It’s a beautiful thing, actually. The WH is trying to put out brush fires while the Federal Fire Department is conducting the real arson investigation.

I will also suggest that your recent cardiac event had to to put you in front of the big I Really Am Going To Die! mirror, which is no fun to look at for the first time. I’ll be 62 in a couple of weeks and we all don’t want to look at that mirror until we are forced to. I haven’t had to, yet, but I know it’s out there.

Get out of Texas. Too much baggage for you here. South Carolina is, in many places, a Shithole Country, but there are some lovely oases from the crazies. Charleston, Columbia, Hilton Head, Clemson, even little known backwaters like Union have small thriving Liberal communities. Do some research, choose wisely.

Whoa, Windows 10 has a night mode that turns your screen monkey-shit brown.

Night mode is all the rage now, after so-called experts claimed that the bright light of computer and phone displays fools our biological clocks into thinking it’s still daytime. So, the idea is night modes are dimmer (and/or skewed toward the red) to help us fall asleep at the right time.

My phone for example will adjust the color temp down according to the user’s preferences.

Personally, I run YouTube in night mode all the time, because I think it looks better.

Seems the tax bill was not great news for everyone in business.

Tax overhaul leads AmEx to first loss in 26 years, buyback suspension

AmEx’s shares dropped 2.5 percent to $97.20 in trading after the bell on Thursday.

The company took a $2.6 billion charge to cover a new one-time repatriation tax on undistributed income of certain non-U.S. units and to adjust the value of its deferred tax assets and liabilities.

The charge lowered AmEx’s capital ratios and to rebuild that, the company said it would suspend share buybacks for the first half of 2018, but continue paying dividends, though only at current levels.

Combine that with the way that Reagan tossed them aside as soon as Nancy’s White House astrologer told her the time was right. The Christian Coalition decided it would start insinuating its people into every level of government, society, the military and public administration, and they have certainly made their presence clearly felt.

Chinese youth are infatuated with cat sniffing.

Zhou Shuaibo loves sniffing his orange tabby cat and spends hours playing with it every day.

Burying his face in the fluffy body of his cat and inhaling deeply while stroking its tummy, Zhou is one of China’s many “cat sniffers,” a term coined for those who obsessively smell and cuddle their cats, often multiple times a day, Xinhua reported.

“As a veteran cat sniffer, if I don’t get my fix I feel absolutely terrible. I have a serious cat addiction,” says another cat-lover on Zhihu, China’s version of Quora.

Is that what the kids are calling it now?

Then there is cat huffing:

What’s cat-huffing? In the simplest terms, it’s burying one’s face into a cat’s body (usually the neck or abdominal region) and repeatedly inhaling deeply until the cat loses patience. An addict will allow her face to rest in the cat belly for hours, if allowed. You see, we cat-huffers just can’t get enough of the sweet-smelling feline nirvana.

Tucker guest Mark Steyn: “For the purposes of argument” let’s say white supremacists are dangerous. “It’s irrelevant. The white supremacists are American citizens”

It goes beyond that; Nazis and white supremacists are being mainstreamed and portrayed as everyday people-next-door who simply occupy a spot on the political spectrum, when in fact their views are anathema to everything America stands for.

FNC’s owners and taking heads know what modern America is and they live in it but they try to scare their viewers who are scared of the changes by doing shit like that. Trump can’t talk about El Salvadorans without MS-13. Far be for me to praise George W Bush but he acknowledged to his credit that most immigrants were trying to live the American Dream.

GW Bush’s immigration policies were among the few things about his presidency that I could support. But even his own party could not get behind him on that issue.

Dunno: I never though Bush’s immigration-reform plans were a serious thing, Oh he may have been sincere about them, but not serious: he probably knew the GOP wasn’t going to back much in the way of any substantive reform, so felt free to propose stuff, secure that it wouldn’t cause problems for his Party by actually passing.

Morning!

I feel like my brain is getting shut down.

I blame media. Especially TV news. It feels like they are drilling a hole in my head and not only releasing what I already know, they are trying to stuff crap in that I know not to be right.

I have a feeling today is going to be one of those days. It’s all Hillary’s fault. She should have been a better candidate. Trump still has his voters backing him…if only he stopped tweeting it would all be better.

So, I have been told.

Arrrrgh.

I dunno. I think after 2004,where he got 40% of the Hispanic vote, he saw a chance to do what he could to make sure the GOP wasn’t reviled in Hispanic communities the way it was and is in African American ones. And remember his own sister in law is an immigrant. But I don’t know. Of one thing though there is no doubt, the GOP and American right have grown far more nativist under Trump. They’re not even doing “We’re anti illegal immigration” but attacking all immigrants and PoC.

Trump’s poll numbers are historically low. Almost 90% of Americans support DACA. Democrats have done extremely well in special elections and state level elections since 2016.

Ignore the idiot elements of the MSM and focus on the good news. And keep on resisting. I hope there will be huge protests this weekend to commemorate last year’s Women’s marches.

I just cannot stand it when my brother repeats all this propaganda about the Deep State and how Hillary is the one in bed with the Russians. Every one of these Trumpsters receives daily talking points to mask the real crimes of this administration. It is really terrifying to think that most of the GOP seems under the control of Putin and his pals.

Peoples Temple. Many people have surrendered their entire being to worship and defense of Jones, er, I mean Drumpf. The stronger the evidence, the more extreme the denial. Just think back to Jonestown, how people saw things being wrong but overlooked or rationalized it lest they have to give up on their very being. A few came to their senses and left. Others rode it right down to drinking poison when they didn’t want to. Some are going to snap really bad as this goes down. It is a true existential threat, and fear of death drives all kinds of irrationality.

To me, this isn’t a strategic chess match, they are fanatics who will go to any extreme, deny any reality, make up any story rather than accept the blow that their lord and savior is a lying traitorous conman. Maybe that explains why he allegedly freaked out the first time he went out for a cruise in the yacht he eventually had to sell to that Saudi prince. The water was a little rough, as it often is in Teh Ocean, and according to the stories, Trump was afraid the yacht would sink and ordered it be turned around. I doubt it left dock until the Saudi guy got it in a bankruptcy sale.

In some decent news…I see Columbus made the Top 20 in the Amazon Sweepstakes to land their new second headquarters.

I know CNBC picked Charlotte/Raleigh-Durham, but I think Columbus stands a decent chance. I know our mayor and business and education people (Ohio State) will be on it.

CNBC - Amazon narrows the list of metro areas for its new headquarters to 20

Amazon said Thursday it narrowed the list of potential sites for its second headquarters to 20 locations.

Amazon said it will spend $5 billion in the place where it builds its second headquarters and will employ 50,000 there. The company previously said it was looking at metropolitan areas with 1 million people and a stable, business-friendly environment.

The remaining 20 places are:
Atlanta

The e-commerce giant received 238 proposals from cities in North America, many with lofty tax incentives and unique offers directed at CEO Jeff Bezos.

“Getting from 238 to 20 was very tough — all the proposals showed tremendous enthusiasm and creativity,” Holly Sullivan, an executive with Amazon Public Policy, said in a statement.

The 20 places that are moving on in the selection process will work with Amazon over the coming months to “evaluate the feasibility of a future partnership,” the company said.

Amazon expects to make a final decision this year.

An analysis by CNBC determined that the Charlotte/Raleigh-Durham area of North Carolina best matched Amazon’s criteria.

Among the cities that didn’t make the cut was Detroit, one of the areas hit hardest by the Great Recession.

Italian chain restaurants have no soul. Bland. You have to go to a place with moma chasing people with a big wooden spoon.

Plus, there are so many styles of Italian.

Roma, Sicilian, Neapolitan, Northern…each different in it’s own way and the ingredients used. I think foodies count 20 different regions.

For example, based on the porn people watch, there are a lot of men who are attracted to big women, but they try to date skinny women to impress their friends. If they got over that, a lot of men who are failing in their attmepts to hook up with skinny women could meet a lot of lonely big women who can’t get dates, and everyone would be happier.

Some travel agents in Minnesota are issuing an ominous warning to Vikings fans ready to descend upon Philadelphia for Sunday’s NFC Championship game: The “City of Brotherly Love” is just a nickname.

The city that notoriously pelted Santa with snowballs at an Eagles game in 1968 continues to live up to its reputation some 50 years later, at least from the perspective of ticket brokers and tourism officials roughly 1,100 miles away. Drew Baydala of Minneapolis’ Ticket King told CBS Philadelphia that he’s warning prospective ticket buyers to keep their emotions in check should the Vikings win at Lincoln Financial Field.

This is how it is being spun, it is the Washington Establishment and not the (majority in both houses) GOP. And when it does shut down and Trump attends a few meetings to get things back on track, he will be hailed and praised as the consummate deal-maker who saved us from those crustified elites.

Media already teeing this up for the GOP: It’s a “bipartisan failure,” “Congress” is responsible for this, and thus we should be angry at all Congressmen and not the party that is screaming that they’re prepared to nuke the economy over anti-immigrant stupidity.

Of course the Old Grey Whore is saying it, and Faux will put everything on the Democrats, but where else have you seen it?

And the local news was also going with the “Congress” line this morning. It helps to remember that with this whole thing happening on a Friday, most folks who aren’t federal employees or serving abroad will not pay much attention to a shutdown unless it runs into next week. If Trump “solves” the whole thing over the weekend and people go to work Monday to stories about how “Congress” passed the CR, then it’ll be barely a blip on the national radar.

From the House FusionGPS meeting (Daily Kos link):

MR. SIMPSON: You know, someone who says they’re a billionaire but can’t get a bank loan, you know, there’s this whole issue of where is the credit coming from. And so, you know, we were always trying to figure out where - how he was financing various things.

and

MR. SIMPSON: As we pieced together the early years of his biography, it seemed as if during the early part of his career he had connections to a lot of Italian mafia figures, and then gradually during the nineties became associated with Russian mafia figures.

Here’s a big bombshell:

MR. SIMPSON: It appears the Russians, you know, infiltrated the NRA. And there is more than one explanation for why. But I would say broadly speaking, it appears that the Russian operation was designed to infiltrate conservative organizations. And they targeted various conservative organizations, religious and otherwise, and they seem to have made a very concerted effort to get in with the NRA. And so there is a Russian banker-slash-Duma member-slash-Mafia leader named Alexander Torshin who is a life member of the NRA.

Due to new regulations and decreased funding, only 69 of the 163 rural hospitals in Texas will be able to continue delivering babies, forcing pregnant women in these areas to drive long distances to receive medical care

That is happening in a number of places; in Scotland, where my sister-in-law had to travel from Helensburgh into Glasgow, over 30 miles.
There is still a maternity ward in Bingen, Germany, but the intensive care ward for babies has been moved to Bad Kreuznach; only some ten miles away, but if there is a problem with the child, they only take the baby and leave the mother in Bingen…

Pornhub is a treasure trove of data about American’s sexual proclivities.

My wife is a slightly bigger woman and I have zero regrets about being with her. I’ve never been attracted to really skinny women. I like some curves.

I’ve been asking myself the same. The thing is politics aside he’s a decent guy.

This line of reasoning has been around a lot lately, such as in that article about how Trump voters are blackballed on Tinder. ‘Just because I’m a Trump supporter doesn’t mean I’m not a nice guy’, and so on. Actually it does. By definition, the opinions you have and the stances you take make you not a decent person. Good people can and do occasionally do bad things, this is true. One lapse does not invalidate a lifetime of good acts. But if you continue to deliberately, stubbornly, hold opinions and take positions that clearly defend selfishness and evil, it is only reasonable to conclude that you are not a good person. You may be pleasant, you may be polite, but you are not good, or decent.

He’s your friend and I would never suggest that you take the opinions of people you’ve never met on the internet over a real life relationship. But I have had no trouble or hesitation cutting Trumpers out of my life, even ones I really liked.

Sanctity of life doesn’t really even extend to the unborn. They’re just antiabortion. It’s not as though they’re clamoring for prenatal care, supplemental nutrition for mothers and advocating for more money for research and treatment of birth defects and genetic abnormalities. They just want the fetus carried to term (without having to chip any money to get to that point) even if the end result is a dead baby that spent it’s entire fleeting life in agony and bankrupt parents.

Now, what will you do when his cheerleading contributes to another Charlottesville? You don’t think his postings and forwardings can instigate such a thing? You don’t think some asshole will read about the “welfare cheats”, lose it, and commit violence? Speech may be free, but not free of consequences. Considering the House has gone into recess, I can’t foresee any scenario where Trump avoids a shutdown without the DNC knuckling under and voting for the CR bill. Any changes would mean sending the bill back to the House, same with the Senate passing their own bill. And any “deal” made with Trump personally will be worthless.

I agree: chronic carping from portside about Schumer aside, he’s done (IMO) a bang-up job keeping the Senate Dems together: Harry Reid was, all things considered a better Leader, but, as you say, it’s mainly a matter of style. I think Reid, if he were still around, would have gone to see Trump and work out the same sort of deal (i.e. chumping The Yam and the GOP big-time) but insist on delivering a figurative kick-in-the-balls to Mitch McConnell - and any stray GOPers in the way - in the process. Chuck, I think, doesn’t care as much about that: but as long as the results are the same, who cares?

re: #425 Old Liberal

I think the problem here is you have a “theoretical” problem. In other words, since this guy seems to be all mouth and not much action, you can overlook it. Now, what will you do when his cheerleading contributes to another Charlottesville? You don’t think his postings and forwardings can instigate such a thing? You don’t think some asshole will read about the “welfare cheats”, lose it, and commit violence? Speech may be free, but not free of consequences. I won’t even speculate that your friend could do violence himself, because I’m sure you would deny it. Everyone always denies it and says what a surprise it was when interviewed later.

How are you sure he would deny it?

You’ll probably jump all over me and make some assumptions but some of the stuff you post is over-the-top.

Live life the way you want, disassociate who you want, but to make assumptions and trying to tell others what to do is really crass.

But it sure is easy to do on the ‘net when you have no feel for the reality of others.

Yeah you just sometimes never notice certain things in people when you got on with them. Likewise, you may overlook a great quality because you didn’t get along with someone.

She was good at keeping those things hidden from me. Probably why it ended, she got tired of hiding it. Have since heard things about her that make me ask if it is the same person they are talking about.

We got along fine from day to day and week to week but never talked about the long-term issues at any length. Not something she liked to do, and I was not one to press the point.

Thanks guys. It’s frustrating and I know y’all don’t want to hear about my inner dramas. Just sucks when you thought you knew someone but you really didn’t in many a way right or worse that maybe it was always there and you overlooked it? I’m fortunate that my immediate family is against this mess. of an administration. In fact, Mom seems more aware of her immigrant grandparents with all the attacks on immigrants, learning about their lives from my research, and having a first generation American granddaughter too. My closest brother in age has revealed himself to be a man of great empathy for those different than him too. He’s been to parts of Africa that Trump would call a shithole and made friends with the people there and showed a profound respect for them and their culture.

I think you seem like a good man and I’d be proud to hang with you. Thinking things through is always a good idea, and it is brave to ask for other perspectives. This dark time will pass. Remember, the expression of “brother against brother” in the U.S. Civil War wasn’t a cliché, they were resigned to kill each other. I wish the right wing powers had not poisoned the well so bad.

I honestly would be shocked if he did commit violence because he’s not a violent guy. Difference between being violent and narrow minded.

I honestly would be shocked by it. I think he’s narrow minded and bigoted and classist but not a violent person. I think he honest to God has been blinded by propaganda that prevents him from seeing the humanity in others. He’s got a really weird hard on against communists which I find hilarious since he’s probably never actually met any.

It’s not in everyone to commit violence personally. The question I ask is: if the call came out from FOX and the administration that Hillary supporters/Hispanics/whatever were threats to the nation and should be reported to the authorities for close observation, would they report their neighbours? Would they report their friends? Would they report me?

This is hypothetical, but not as far-fetched a scenario as one might think. FOX throws offhand rhetoric that is perilously close to this every day. I don’t know how all of them would react in such circumstances - I have read stories, for instance, of racist white Southerners sheltering innocent black men from lynch mobs at risk to themselves, which give me hope for humanity. However, in the case of most of the Trumpers I know, I look at them and conclude that they would. They would absolutely put me on the trains. They are a cult.

Well I unfortunately can’t answer that. You’re right about the Trumpers though.

If you find my posts where I tell someone else what to do, let me know so I can apologize. I do try to say what I have done. I don’t know anyone else’s situation. If the strength of my opinions seems to be me telling someone what to do, that is not my intent. My intent is to strongly state my perspective. As for denying, I would deny that anyone I know would commit violence, because that is the normal perspective, to deny that anyone in our circle could do bad things. However, I do assert that recent evidence shows that people who engage in extreme social media postings in fact do commit violence. But rather than suggest that HW’s friend could commit violence- an assertion without basis and which would be denied rightfully by HW- I simply indicate that people posting unbased rightwing memes can cause others to act out.

I’ve been thinking about this a lot as I read about the rise of the Third Reich too. There’s a terrific book I just read earlier this winter called Winter about these two German brothers. One joins the NSDAP and the other becomes Anti-Nazi. You know that going in but you don’t know which brother goes which way until the middle of the novel.

I brought it up because there was some discussion about a past exchange of posts that really upset a long time member here.

I understand a lot of your points, but you have to give other people room to make decisions, especially when it comes down to family and real friends.

Plus, if you cut people off, you eliminate doing good by trying to change them. Sure, some are hopeless, but the right thing to do is try to change them. If there is no hope and it is very evident, then staying away can be a good thing too.

I know, I have an older brother that I avoid because it does his wife and others in our family no good to see him get all worked up. Call it keeping the peace. We all have tried to ease him down, but he sees himself as the family leader and cannot be questioned. So we gave up questioning. It makes me sad. But it was my/our decision.

I wouldn’t want someone on the ‘net tell me I should do this or that. It’s too personal.

That is all.

That’s a good point. I’m just struggling because it’s my oldest friend. Anyone else? I’d cut off years ago tbh.

I have a thought: You could explain that you find his views on immigration, race, and poverty so abhorrent that you need to keep politics out of your relationship to be able to stay friends. Unfriend him on Facebook or wherever else he posts these opinions. You guys can email or whatever as long as he doesn’t bring that stuff up.
