Need Some Exceptional Music? Prepare to Be Amazed by Classical Pianist Daniil Trifonov’s Tiny Desk Concert

Jan. 12, 2018 | Tom Huizenga — When we invited Russian pianist Daniil Trifonov to play a Tiny Desk concert, we rolled out the big guns. In place of the trusty upright, we wedged a 7-foot grand piano behind Bob Boilen’s desk in preparation for the artist who The Times of London called “without question the most astounding pianist of our age.”

That’s a pretty lofty claim, but watch and judge for yourself. His performance here is extraordinary. Still in his 20s, Trifonov seems to have it all: jaw-dropping technique and interpretive skills beyond his age. He’s also a composer — the night before his NPR visit, he played his own knuckle-twisting piano concerto at the Kennedy Center here in Washington, D.C.

But for his Tiny Desk show, Trifonov focused on Chopin, beginning with the mercurial “Fantaisie-Impromptu” in C-sharp minor, a work that mixes sweeping melody, turbulent passion and wistful repose. Hunching close over the keyboard with feline agility, Trifonov’s slender fingers glide effortlessly. He coaxes the instrument to sing tenderly in the slow central section.

Trifonov follows with a pair of short tributes to Chopin by his peers. Robert Schumann’s “Chopin” accentuates the lyrical side of Chopin, filtered through the German composer’s forward-looking harmonies, while Edvard Grieg’s “Hommage à Chopin” offers volatility, lovingly rendered.

The smartly programmed set is capped with more Chopin, but with a nod to Mozart: the finale from a set of variations based on an aria from Don Giovanni. It gives Trifonov a chance to display his lightness of touch, plus a few pianistic fireworks. Smiling, he treats the tricky filigreed runs and hand crossings as if it were a child’s game. Look closely and you can see the piano shake.

Set List*

Chopin: “Fantaisie-Impromptu, Op. 66”

Schumann: “Chopin. Agitato” (from Carnaval)

Grieg: “Hommage à Chopin, Op. 73, No. 5”

Chopin: “Variations on ‘Là ci darem la mano’ (from Mozart’s Don Giovanni) - Coda. Alla Polacca”

*(Selections found on the album Chopin Evocations.)

Chopin was my go to classical make-out music in college. Throw in a little Sade, and the night was complete, so to speak.

I know the potential impact of the shutdown here is small change compared to what some folks are facing, but I am supposed to be running a race in Death Valley on Feb. 3rd and we have campground reservations for the night before.

I may have just booked a back-up hotel in Lone Pine on the chance that the race goes on even if the campground is closed.

My wife booked us into a motel in Westminster, Colo. for Wednesday night (car service on Thursday morning at Westminster Mercedes-Benz).

She went over our finances again due to the pending shutdown and says we have enough money saved for at least a year, so we can afford to have our car service done.

But facilities requiring regular maintenance will probably be closed …like the campgrounds…

The race is organized by a private group with permits, so that part might happen if the park is technically open. I don’t know. I just want to go run in a pretty setting, dammit.

(I know, this is really small potatoes and the least reason why the shutdown is awful. And I support the shutdown over negotiating with the hostage takers but I’d rather see nobody get hurt except the people who deserve it.)

Here’s how a federal government shutdown could affect Colorado — from federal workers to research to parks

From the above article:

“The Veterans Health Administration received advance appropriations for Fiscal Year 2018 as part of the 2017 Budget. So in the event of a government shutdown, VHA would continue full operations,” said Curt Cashour, a VA spokesman, in a statement. “In addition, even in the event that there is a shutdown, 95.5 percent of VA employees would come to work, and most aspects of VA’s operations would not be impacted.”

The complicated regulatory stuff that I consult on requires my near-constant use of the website of a particular 3-letter Federal agency. There’s a filing window that’s supposed to open on Thursday for which I have a dozen clients depending on me to get their regulatory filings in on time. I literally can’t even begin working on their filings without access to one particular piece of that agency’s website. Which they take offline immediately when a shutdown hits, or at least they did last time.

I will be sitting here staring aimlessly out into the void Monday morning (and not being paid for said void-staring) if that website isn’t up.

Good fucking times.

There is a value to demonstrations, but like all tools, they have a shelf-life and a season. (Learned that walking a picket line for 101 days mid-Nov to mid-Feb in freaking cold Kentucky.) We’ll be in the streets again when the payback looks achievable. Until then there is still a working electoral process in the states, and a November fucking to prepare.

Okay, so I went over to the VA main Website, and noted a subtle change … so I fired a query at the VA.

On the main page, the VA notes they operate over 130 cemeteries. It now reads they operate over 130 in the United States and Puerto Rico.

That drew a question from me:

The main Website notes the VA runs veterans cemeteries in the USA and Puerto Rico.

I am curious why it is written that way, since Puerto Rico is part of the United States.

Social Security is paid from its own trust fund and is not (supposed to be) affected by a shutdown (though its employees are).

As for the rest, the shutdown took place over seventeen days and did not affect the payment schedule of things such as retirement or disability. That said, the VA warned us then that we would be cut off as well. The Ted Cruz Express was resolved before that happened.

The logic and I use that term loosely is that they need the Dems to pass the resolution. Okay, then, what’s McConnnell and Trump willing to give up for those Dem votes? Then again, I recall one Republican, the guy who Donnelly in Indiana actually beat said that compromise for the Democrats should be doing what the Republicans tell tehm to do. They have the majority in both Houses and the Presidency. If they can’t get this passed, they shouldn’t be trusted with the keys to the WH and Congress. Many other nations have wound up as military dictatorships when they fail to pay their military troops.

So far, despite the number of times conservatives have stopped the government because they are toddlers when they can’t get their way, our military has remained loyal.

re: #68 dirkdigglerjr

This all played out from Trump’s bring me something and I’ll sign it summit, to the deal Butters and Durbin had worked out only to be sandbagged by Miller, Cotton, Goodlatte, etc., and the ensuing “shithole” controversy. In the end, you can only surmise that Kelly thinks a shutdown will work for Trump politically. Otherwise the deal would have been done.

That assumes that Kelly — or anyone in the White House — is organized enough to have a strategy.

Disabled vet. All in favour of holding out. The GOP is holding them hostage. This is all on the GOP, like all the other shutdowns.

They need to pay a price for this, and the electorate needs to be made aware of it.

I noted to everyone I could around here a couple days ago that they should not buy magic balance fairy arguments or that it’s the Dems fault. It was quite a screed; another vet asked me if he could put it up on his Facebook page.

Have a very good friend, practically a brother. He is a part-time minister and puritanically anti-choice. He overlooks the rest of Trump’s misdeeds on this one issue alone. And in a county where 75 percent of the folks voted for Trump, there are many more like my friend.

Even if the Democratic candidate were the most hardline anti-abortion zealot ever, they would still find a reason that the Republican was the ‘godly’ candidate. Their mouthings about religion are nothing more than empty words, and their rationalisations only an excuse to vote for fascists.

They already said that. Help me out those who lived it and would have known Reagan from his acting years but was Reagan’s suddenly talking the religious right’s language just as amusing to you as Trump doing so? My personal belief is the religious right are either easily conned or will overlook someone not really being a believer in their bs as long as they give them what they want which is what Reagan and now Trump have given the RR. Likewise, they detest people like Carter and Obama and Hillary Clinton who actually do understand scripture and religious tradition.

Paul Wyrich, a Dominionist, is the person who led Evangelicals from a position of being generally apolitical to overwhelmingly supporting the GOP. Wyrich thought that they could more effectively push their brand of Christianity into law by supporting the GOP than supporting Carter.

Though Carter is an Evangelical himself, he firmly believes in keeping religion out of secular government.

So your opinion having grown up in the community that it’s more cynical than actually believing that Trump or Ronnie before him actually believes in Christ and all that but as long as he does their biding. I tend to agree especially for people like Franklin Graham, Falwell Jr, and the prominent Evangelicals. I do think it’s more naivete on the lower level from people who are influenced by people like those guys.

Yeah, it’s not quite as simplistic as it appears on the surface, but you’ve basically nailed it. When you think about it, the people below the head honchos are basically just sheep; brainwashed and indoctrinated, they do whatever their evangelical guides tell them to do, as long as it’s couched in the right religious mumbo-jumbo. In the meantime, the religious superpowers are only focusing on the one pet issue that bugs evangelical teachers more than anything else: ABORTION. Get that right, and you’ve got the power of God on your side, no matter how completely un-Christian your life is. And then that trickles down to the rank and file filling the pews every Sunday via the information bubble of the Bible belt.

The other thing to remember, too - and this was pointed out upthread - is that it’s not just getting it right on abortion. It is possible for a Democrat to win the approval of the evangelicals over a Republican, but because the Republicans made a conscious choice to court the religious right, they have a much lower bar to clear. It makes it so much more complicated in places where the line between Democrat and Republican is blurred or even reversed.

Yup. Wyrich helped weld the White Citizen’s Councils and their anti-integration stance (a large part made up of evangelicals) into the Council of Conservative Citizens (the motivation for the AME church shooting in Charleston).

The Southern Baptist Convention originally did not care about Roe: They included in their platform at the time that abortion was an issue on conscience for individual Southern Baptists and was “a Catholic problem.” Wyrich was the guy who saw that as a means to power in the GOP for Evangelicals.

Yup. The lapdogs always fall into line to embrace the winner. It seems to be law where US politics is concerned that, to be a Democrat is to be considered to blame for everything, and to be a Republican is to never be to blame for anything.

Sadly, NYT probably won’t be the only ones treading this line.

re: #284 makeitstop

Is it an official result if not everyone votes?

Yes, normally votes are timed, and if a vote is not cast it is counted as an abstention or absent.

This vote is not timed, and a bunch of senators are in the cloak room right now (where there are no C-SPAN cameras). I imagine a whole lot of arm-twisting is going on out of sight.

McConnell by virtue of not yet voting could also pull the bill.

I’ve been checking out the Japanese auctions in the past year since I sold my TDI back to VW (hence why I’ve been asking if anyone here is proficient in Japanese lol) to seek out a car that I can bring to the states from Japan as long as it’s 25 years old or older to ensure it is federally legal. And it goes down to the month and year of manufacture in order to be legal to import.

I can’t fucking believe this is happening. A car that I’ve lusted over since the Gran Turismo days, will finally be in my driveway by next month!

RORO shipping via sea freight, the cheapest and most economical way to do so. Container shipping is WAY too expensive for a single car. I’d have to load up two vehicles plus a plethora of automotive parts in a 20 foot container to be economically viable.
