An Awesome Collection of Images From #WomensMarch2018

Politics • Views: 35,527

Here’s an incredible collection of Images from today’s Women’s March to protest the barbaric Trump administration, from Twitter Moments. It was huge, perhaps even larger than the march last year, with millions of people taking to the streets.

It was so encouraging to see such a gigantic turnout for #WomensMarch2018. I was worried that many people were getting burned out and shutting down at the constant flow of awfulness from the Trump gang — but no, they’re energized and ready to fight.

Not great like the above but a certain poignancy I think.

Rest in peace, Dorothy Malone (1924-2018)

Douglas Sirk’s best imho incredibly over-the-top melodrama Written on the Wind (1957), for which Ms. Malone was deservedly awarded the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress

Charles— the photo you identified as last year’s is in the thread above.

Last night you were concerned at the lost opportunity for LGF contribution to marches. With a little organization, we could exploit our advantage of geographic dispersion and ideological unity. Lizards can guarantee rolling timezone coverage of a lot of publicized direct action events from street level. Mostly, it takes timely notice and a bit of pre-planned division of labor.

Great collection of pics! Woot!

Couldn’t go this year due to family obligations but last year with my Mom was so amazing. Looking at the pics and reading the stories has me completely juiced again.
I do want to get another big march in this summer, before midterms. We’ve got a lot of organizing on deck which is fun too.
But whew, huge shows of solidarity like this are amazing and hella motivational!

The Brian Krassenstein tweet above jumped out at me. This is not just about Trump, of course. It is really important that this movement not just be characterized as anti-Trump in the media because as we’ve seen in the last year there are monsters who are Democratic Party supporters, and presumably a few Democrats themselves. They should be quaking too.

I guess what I’m saying is that the Democrats should not take women’s anger for granted. It has to be turned into real action and change.

Trump on fox 2013

You have to get everybody in a room. You have to be a leader. The president has to lead. He has get Mr. Boehner and everybody else in a room, and they have to make a deal. You have to be nice and be angry and be wild and congeal and do all sorts of thing, but you have to get a deal

Once upon a time, “work” in Trump’s vocabulary was a president bringing together members of Congress and working together to make a deal happen to end a shutdown.

But that was before he put in the minimal amount of effort and won the presidency, so now “work” appears to be making a few calls and then spending time laughing it up with sycophants for the camera.

Another problem is this game of limping from CR to CR, having no idea how much funding they’ll have from month to month, is no more helpful to the our Armed Forces. For the slower minds of wingnuts who need simple analogies, it’s the equivalent of a household that keeps limping from paycheck to paycheck, never knowing if it can afford to spend even a few bucks because a family member might be laid off and totally screw the next budget.

You can look at as I did during the Reagan, GHW Bush, and GW Bush administrations, where they were my bosses.

Respect to the office of Commander-in-Chief was due, but respect to the persons was not (at least privately). GHW Bush’s statement about wondering whether atheists could be patriotic and should not be citizens particularly chapped my bee-hind while I was in the Navy at sea.

This kind of fundy-survivalist-gun humper crap was already going full blast in the 70s though it stayed below the media horizon until the 90s. My first wife’s involvement with Fundy loons played a big part in the disintegration of marriage. One couple she knew thought it was “unnatural” for someone from my impoverished background to be so “intellectual” and articulate. (It doesn’t take much to over-awe, and frighten, these rubes). They suggested that it was demonic possession.

115
dog philosopher ஐஒஔ௸  Jan 20, 2018 • 8:04:38pm

The Senate Democratic leader, Chuck Schumer, has said that he offered to consider the full spending request for President Trump’s promised border wall when the two met on Friday, and that the president later backed out on some tentative agreements once his advisers, including Chief of Staff John Kelly, got to him. But in a briefing Saturday, Office of Management and Budget Director Mick Mulvaney told a different story: The president asked Schumer for $20 billion to build the wall, and Schumer rejected it, only offering the original $1.6 billion request outlined in the White House’s 2018 budget.

“We absolutely did not reject the full funding request,” a senior Democratic aide told me. “Schumer and Trump agreed by the end that they were close enough on everything that they should pursue a short term CR to facilitate a deal, so nothing was agreed to but they were in good shape on an overall framework. Then Kelly started to unravel it.”

There’s also a dispute over why a deal failed to come together during the frenzied two-hour Senate vote Friday night. The proposal included a bill to fund the government through Feb. 8, rather than Feb. 16, as well as a commitment to move a bipartisan immigration bill through the Senate and the House—either in a stand-alone vote in the next few weeks or attached to the Feb. 8 spending bill. The Senate Democratic Whip, Dick Durbin, claims that when Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Speaker Paul Ryan spoke on the phone to discuss this, Ryan rejected it outright. (There was a moment on the floor last night when McConnell walked back into the chamber from a call, said something to Durbin, and Durbin rolled his eyes and shook his head.) McConnell spokesperson David Popp described Durbin’s characterization as “laughably false,” and said “there was no deal at any time that was blown up by Speaker Ryan. Period.” Ryan’s spokeswoman, AshLee Strong, said that “the speaker was not part of any deal or involved in any negotiations.”

Whether Ryan formally tanked a “deal”—there’s some wiggle room here—is a technical point. Everyone understands the dynamic. House Republicans do not want to take up the Senate’s bipartisan immigration bill. If they did, the Senate could wrap that and all of the other loose ends quickly. If House leaders brought up the Senate’s immigration bill, it could pass the House with mostly Democratic votes, over the objections of conservative members. Such a move could invite a challenge to Ryan’s speakership from the right—especially if the Senate bill doesn’t currently enjoy the president’s support. This, in very condensed form, is the dilemma: Most Senate Democrats will not vote for a spending bill until there’s a path for getting protections for Dreamers passed in both houses, and House Republicans and the White House are saying that they will not negotiate on immigration while the government is shut down.

So how does the government reopen? The answer to that won’t be known for a few days.

First, the public must decide who’s to blame. As the shutdown lingers and more people pay attention, polling will more clearly reveal which party is “losing.” The losing side will then sue for peace, and then it’s just a matter of negotiating the terms of surrender. Since the “winning” side has zero incentive to save the losing party, the surrender offer will likely be nothing.

So much of the punditry about shutdowns is about how it will affect the midterm elections, and so little of it is about the very important items that are at stake. But the political fears are just a spur for resolving a policy logjam. Shutdowns are a referendum on a particular policy impasse, and they’re risky because the winner takes the spoils.

Don’t have to be. I got a small group together to go, none of whom do FB. It’s a word of mouth thing. I think that’s a good way to do it since this way the marches stay “clean”. If it was broadcast there could be trouble from counter-protests and other unsavory stuff.

Contrary to the hype, most people in the USA actually aren’t on Facebook.

You have to have “liked” pages preparing marches, and then pay attention. If you are signed up with many pages or groups or friends, the stream of content goes by so fast you can’t do anything else but watch. I gave up trying.

I did see some things, but none were anywhere near me, and I’m not good on my feet anyway. So it has to be “in spirit!”

No word of mouth here.

Any protest that can’t stand up to counter-protestors (who also have the same I Amendment rights) probably has problems to start with.

Millions marched today, probably more than last year. There were a smattering of counter-protestors who turned out to be insignificant, and no reports of violence.

Tomorrow’s Women’s March in Knoxville already has two counter-protest groups set up against it: the Nazis and Tennessee Right-to-Life. I expect both groups will be vastly outnumbered.

I’d be one of those people, as I have a FB account and use it, *but* I spend maybe an hour on it at a time about once or twice a week. OTOH, there are people who practically live on it 24/7.

Virtual Reality Users Watch Helplessly as Another User Has In-Game Seizure

A strange and unexpected consequence of virtual reality devices becoming more widely accessible is that users can now see other users suffer from real medical emergencies in the digital world, but not be able to do anything about it.

That’s what YouTuber Rogue Shadow VR claims happened to him and other users in the virtual reality social app VRChat this week.

As Rogue explains in his video, he and other VRChat users were goofing off in one of the app’s virtual environments when suddenly one of the avatars in the room, a black and red robot, fell to the floor and began twitching. At first, it’s unclear if it was just a bug or someone goofing off, which is what many VRChat users like to do.

Apparently one-third of the country is extremists then, according to the stats cited above.

The Post Office and the telephone company don’t send me Russian propaganda or sell my information to anyone who wants it. Hence the “your the product” part of Facebook.

I didn’t call you an extremist, I said your hostility comes off extreme imo. There’s a difference.

I’m not being hostile to Facebook, I am noting a reality. “If it’s free, you’re the product.” That’s the way Facebook works. It’s why advertisers can segregate sections of Facebook for targeted adverts (such as all those targeted at anti-Semites during the last election).

I fear Mark Zuckerberg leveraging his platform for all the information on it for his presidential run, if he still wants to do that.

Somehow me not wanting to use the service because I don’t want to be a product or a target for propaganda is different than others who had different reasons for not using the service.

No one in my family uses Facebook or Twitter, so that reason (to keep in touch with family) wouldn’t work for me anyway, even if it is more convenient than picking up a telephone and dialing eleven numbers.

Our Indivisible group has a closed-group Facebook page, you have to be a member to see the posts. That’s where I heard about it, but I didn’t look closely at the details because it was unlikely I’d go. Don’t usually leave my mom for more than a couple of hours at a time these days.

When I was stationed in Spain, the Girl Scout troop on base would have cookies to sell all over Rota delivered by Navy cargo plane.

The day the plane with the cookies arrived, half the base would turn out to help move pallets of cookies.

The base Girl Scouts troop sold way more cookies out in town than they did on base to Spanish citizens.

Alas, we can’t get any Girl Scout cookies here, because no Girl Scouts are around here. (I understand you can order them on-line.)

The 4-H sells homemade cookies though, so we get local goodness when they bring those around.

I am sorry I upset you. Perhaps I should stay out of conversations about social media in the future?

I believe this started when Mr. Johnson noted he could have promoted the Women’s Marches in advance if he knew about them, he was told lots of people were talking about them on Facebook, I noted we didn’t hear about them here at all until we read about them in outside news media to that available here, the conversation shifted to the usefulness of Facebook, I made my opinion known as did several other people, and here we are.

I will need to concede I should not opine on Facebook since I don’t have an account there so I cannot assess its worth (other than what’s reported by the news or others), just as I should not opine about owning a Toyota since I’ve never owned one.

Perhaps I need a break for a while. I would sign off “try to keep the Republic going while I am gone,” but the Republic is closed for business now, courtesy of the GOP.

Ah—I thought craisins were some creepy cranberry/raisin hybrid. If they’re just dried cranberries (I’ll ignore the whole pomegranate thing) I’d be fine. Cranberries seem to maintain their consistency in baking while I think raisins get soggy.

Regarding yesterday’s hotel fire in Prague, it seems the fire started on the ground floor of the hotel. An investigation is underway, but the suspicion is that a refrigerator placed too close to a wall was the ignition source - from there, the fire spread to the next floor up and of course, smoke was everywhere (a chimney effect). Sadly, there’s been one additional fatality, bringing the death toll to three with nine injured, some of them quite seriously injured.

I am like that regarding Twitter: I am not on it and generally do not want to hear about what idiots are tweeting. Unfortunately, “trending on Twitter” has become a news item of its own, and to me, one of the harbingers of the Decline of Civilization as We Know it.

But I joined FB nearly ten years ago when a banjo student posted one of our band gigs and filled up the place with friends. Great way to advertise gigs or organize sessions.

I just leave it on when I am working on line (which is most of the days when I am not teaching) and post a few times a week.

But rarely anything political. I usually delete political posts on FB, be they pro or anti-Trump.

A couple more of my personal FB rules: I do not friend anyone I do not know from Real Life (c) and want to remain in touch with, and I do not “like” anything, whether I like in Real Life (c) or not.

over the last year or so I made three predictions / errors of judgement

- the election itself - yeah, i was way wrong
- that at some point congress would “do something”, “have enough”, protect the system
- the medical exam doctor would be a stand up guy

ok i was wrong all three times
it wont happen again

oh, and oatmeal raisin masquerading as chocolate chip - pure evil

As for the election, remember, he did not win a majority or even a plurality, he was just able to successfully game the system.

I expected Congress to do nothing, they are not going to turn on their President until he becomes a political/electoral liability and a threat to their grasp on power.

As for medical exams, remember Grover Cleveland! I am surprised he was not held up to Trump for comparison…

again, Mueller is not even necessary: there is enough evidence out there of egregious and blatant violations of the emoluments clause, conflicts of interest and clear-cut obstruction of justice.

Mueller is being forced to present a case so clear-cut that Congress has to act on it, but I somehow see them finding ways to discredit or reject the findings.

there will be a lot of infighting in the party that will damage their cause. that is the one key aspect of Trump: he came to be nominated as a compromise between the extremist base and the Establishment who finally acquiesced and accepted him as their ticket to continue governing. The wisdom of Eric Trump:

“Honestly, I think it’s a good thing for us,” he said when asked about the government shutdown, which took place Saturday after Congress failed to agree a new federal budget.

“People see through it. I mean, people have seen a year that’s incredible. It’s been filled with nothing but the best for our country, ‘America First’ policies, and they’re happy with where we are as a nation.”

He claimed that Democrats want to shut the government down because they want to stop his father’s momentum.

“I mean, my father has had incredible momentum. He has gotten more done in one year than arguably any president in history. How do they divert from that message? How do they save their own party when they don’t have any leadership, they don’t have any good candidates out there, they don’t have a message of their own? How do they do that? They obstruct, they distract, they try and place blame,” he said.

It really seems that the only “smart one” in this family is Tiffany.

I think what really sticks out for me in Eric’s statement is claiming the DNC has “no leadership.” It’s funny, but so far I see Nancy and Chuck holding the line pretty well, where as Donny is too busy sitting in the Oval Office while the GOP Congressional leadership is sitting around with its thumb up its ass. The DNC are working to get a deal made and government restarted while the GOP are stamping their feet and demanding they get their way.

Yes, the American people are indeed watching, Eric. Problem is, history shows us that the party which wants to get shit done looks better than the one that believes a shutdown is “good” for the country and negotiation is unnecessary.

Belafon  Jan 21, 2018 • 7:53:30am

Today’s Republican party is built on principle. As a matter of principle, the GOP believes it is the only party that can shut down government as a negotiating tactic. The Democrats’ job is to keep that government open and to cave in to its demands.

Around my area of DFW, and throughout DFW, we are starting to get a lot of what I call high-middle class restaurants, restaurants you can take your family to, but they offer a rather limited menu, and cost about 30-50% more than a lot of the standard family restaurants. I see a lot of them inspired by a number of the Food Network shows about niche restaurants.

This is happening because there’s a whole lot of extra money in my part of the Metroplex. I’m wondering if this is similar to what was happening in the US in the early 1920s. A lot of people here can regularly spend money on eating out (we eat out at a higher rate than New York City residents), and then complain about paying higher property taxes for education.

Targetpractice  Jan 21, 2018 • 8:12:19am

You really can’t orchestrate a shutdown and then act as though you didn’t want one in the first place, and yet that’s exactly what the GOP wants us to believe. Bringing up a CR only days prior to a shutdown, loading it with items they knew the DNC would balk at being in the bill, and then taking steps to ensure that only that bill would receive consideration. Atop all that, the CR only extends the deadline for 30 days, which combined with McConnell’s announcement that there will be no Senate budget resolution this year means we’re going to be limping along for the next year on CRs. After spending the better part of 8 years whining that no budget has been passed, the GOP has just abandoned the process altogether and wants the country to operate on a patchwork quilt made of monthly budget crises.

This shutdown is the result of months of poor leadership and cynical partisanship and if the DNC surrenders, it’s only going to continue to get worse as the GOP panic over their impending losses.

Interestingly, there’s been a whole shit-ton of cafes, wine bars and new restaurants opening up in the city center of Ostrava. And while that’s all well and good, the big problem I can see is that there’s not that many people here with that level of disposable income to support all these establishments. Not too mention there’s an entire 1.5 km long street filled with bars and pubs (Stodolní Street) in the center as well - that’s usually hopping on a summer evening.

The one and only Mexican place has survived longer than I thought it would - it’s been here now for a little over one year and it does good business, usually because they cater to the lunch-rush crowd of office workers; I’ve even taken one of my students there, as she’d never tried Mexican cuisine before and she’s gone on to recommend it and take others there herself.

Childish and inane as it is, this message is actually mild compared to some stuff out there. We were watching George Stephanopolous’ show this morning and he was interviewing some WH drone over the shutdown (Marc Short(??) - bald white guy), and George showed him a clip of a Trump “campaign commercial”* which featured grainy loops of Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi with the overtitles of “Complicit With Evil”, and the direct message that, because of the shutdown, Democrats will be guiltily complicit in the murder of citizens by criminal illegal aliens. Disgusting crap (though par-for-the-course for Trumpians): the interesting thing was the WH guy’s reaction (he’d obviously never seen it): he just stared, and hastily changed the subject when Stephanopolous called him on it.

BTW, anybody know what happened wrt military payrolls during past government shutdowns? From listening to GOPers’ whines, they act as if the whole Services are going to just walk off the job if the shutdown persists….

* I thought it was some rancid leftover from the 2016 campaign, but apparently it’s brand-new

further, this last year has been legislating by crisis. no looking ahead, planning ahead, seeing what’s coming up, what may expire or need attention. no plan, no message, no goal. it’s really not that hard. they just won’t do it because addressing any issue requires working with the dems.

Not only working with Dems…making sure their Tea Freedom jerks don’t take them down from within. And then the hourly changes of El Orange. It’s a three-front battle.

And freakin’ Cotton made that clear on MTP today. He came out and said he will not just support something Trump agrees to with Dems and Repugs like Graham, it has to be good for the people of Arkansas and America and Tom Cotton’s power-trip.

At this point, even though 50% of my assets are still invested in the US and I would pay a hefty price, half of me is wishing that not only the shutdown continues beyond the reasonable point, but also that the debt ceiling is not increased and the US defaults on its debt, precipitating a major crisis.

The country needs to bleed, really bleed, before they can purge the Trump oligarchs out, dispelling that insane notion that “trump is good for the economy” (e.g. witless Andy Sullivan on Bill Maher yesterday) even if it costs me half of my money.

Tangentially related to Girl Scouts:

I worked with a born-again, Bush Jr-was-too-liberal conservative for a number of years. Normally, he kept most of his insane views out of normal work discourse. We were talking about something to do with Girl Scouts being way more tolerant of LGBTQ people. He borderline angrily offered up that he never allowed his daughter to join the Girl Scouts because of their lesbian agenda.

I burst out laughing. He turned several shades of red and walked out of the room. It would not surprise me if that is part of the reason that company doesn’t hire me anymore.

The GOP keeps trying to present a “unified” front and their wingnut media buddies try to claim that it’s the DNC that’s fractured, but the reality is that the GOP’s division is only getting larger by the day. Ryan’s found himself exactly in the same position John of Orange did: If he wants to get shit done he has to work with Nancy but knows doing so will mean a leadership challenge from the FC fuckheads. McConnell doesn’t really face the same danger, so he’s instead sabotaging Senate business just to avoid said leadership challenge in the House.

And rather than having a president who can assuage the two sides, they have one who will support whoever talked to him last. So every time they think they have him on their side and ready to support their agenda, shitstains like Cotton sneak in and change his mind, blowing up all their work and only furthering the division.

This was not a good news day for the GOP:

“Are Democrats complicit?” Dickerson asked Ryan.

“Well, they’re certainly not helping us keep the government open,” Ryan replied glibly. “They’re certainly not helping us on a solution to immigration. When you shut down the government and stop negotiating on immigration reform, they are complicit with not getting things done.”

“But are they complicit in murders?” Dickerson pressed.

“I’m not going to comment,” Ryan insisted after initially commenting. “I just saw that. I don’t know if that’s necessarily productive. It’s not secret the president has strong views on immigration. But what is not productive is a pointless government shutdown that the Senate Democrats have foisted on this country.”

Ryan is now the second Republican today caught on camera admitting he had no idea that Trump had dropped an atom bomb on the GOP’s whole line about just wanting to keep the government open. And the second one who, when confronted about this toxic piece of shit, avoided making any comment about it at all.

Yep absolutely. The thing that bugs me the most though is when they talk about Chicago though. You know being from much more lax Indiana, the city’s proximity to that state. This is going to be devastating to President Hillary Clinton. Okay jokes aside, nice to know FNC is focused on current events. But this is exactly how people get brainwashed. Instead of focusing on current scandals, they go back to the 90’s to bring up the Clintons. Not like you saw MSNBC focusing on Reagan’s crooked administration in the Obama years.

This was not a good news day for the GOP:

Ryan is now the second Republican today caught on camera admitting he had no idea that Trump had dropped an atom bomb on the GOP’s whole line about just wanting to keep the government open. And the second one who, when confronted about this toxic piece of shit, avoided making any comment about it at all.

Which is why I think that ad was dropped without anyone “higher-up” being apprised -or even aware of it (still less consulted or in a position to control its release). Yep absolutely. The thing that bugs me the most though is when they talk about Chicago though. You know being from much more lax Indiana, the city’s proximity to that state. Not to mention Chicago isn’t nearly as high as they think it is in murder rate. In fact, a lot of red state cities have much higher rates.
bismarcktribune.com

Gary, Indiana was a major gang and drug center unto itself, a tradition that went back to the 20’s, when the Chicago mob did not want to touch anything across state lines. But basically all the hard stuff coming from the Gulf came up I-65 through Gary into Chicago.

When I lived there in the 70’s, we had upwards of 50 murders per year, for a population of 150,000.

Blimey, goodness knows how such people would react to your average working class Glaswegian, (Glaswegians are generally garallous by default) never mind someone like myself, who has been through higher education (like a lot of people over here) and doesn’t have a problem with going to the opera or plays and stuff. (It’s still pretty cheap over here.)

The thing that really gets me is that the GOP could have put themselves in a far better position with a simple move: Put forward a “clean” CR. No gimmicky addition of CHIP reauthorization in a cynical attempt at seizing the “moral high ground,” just put forward a bill that does nothing but fund the government for 30 days. Then they would have had a defensible position, arguing that they’re trying to keep the government open while the DNC is trying to involve something that had nothing to do with government funding.

But no, they thought they’d be clever with an “Us vs Them” narrative and are instead showing they couldn’t organize an orgy in a brothel.

I am no fan of Peggy Noonan, but she was correct when she said on MTP today: Trump is a New York Real Estate dealer, not a political one and he has no feel for the difference.

By the way, it seems a lot of the major shows today and other media are really making a point of the “Democrats are Complicit” commercial is dumb politically at this time.

But this is Trump. He is just a real estate dealer and a bad one at that. The fact this country elected this hoax is one of this county’s low points in history. It’s both embarrassing and shameful. But too many of our citizens can’t be ashamed or embarrassed.

It would take some actual knowledge to have such feelings. I guess it comes down to being too stupid to care.

According to the linked article, Dr. Niec’s arrest is related to his heinous criminal record:

Niec’s sister believes the ICE arrest stemmed from a misdemeanor arrest for property damage that he pled guilty to in 1992 at the age of 17.

At the time, the family says he wasn’t notified it could be used in a deportation

“Now, they’re using this expunged case that’s stamped non-public record against him,” Niec-Villaire said.

I agree about the second part, but I think it will prove all too easy for the WH to disclaim any knowledge of the “complicit” ad: just blame out-of-the-public-eye campaign operatives, finger some middle-ranking media shlep as the Designated Chump, and fire them with some very public tsk-tsking about the “negative” tone of campaign discourse, and let’s all move on….

I have been saying this for years. The end of the American dream, the death of the Republic, is because FOX is allowed free reign over the American people. The strength of America has always been its citizens, and in less than two decades, the power of mass media turned America’s citizens into one of the most powerful forces for evil in the world today.

Well, “lying shit” as it may be, Mulvaney knows the audience he’s talking to: 1) the Fox-obsessed “base” for whom the political process is just another sort of reality-TV game show, and who can’t/won’t/don’t want to see past the simple-minded “GOOD/BAD-WIN/LOSE” narrative: and 2) the Orange Asshole in the White House: for whom “victories” that he can take credit for are the main (only?) goal worth pursuing.

re: #469 ObserverArt

That’s going to get anymouse revved up.

I’ve already been on blast about this. I also fired off a message to the state Polish Heritage Center here about it.

The tweet above has a couple details wrong, but yeah, they grabbed a doctor who’s had a Green Card for forty years after coming to the USA escaping communist Poland when he was five with his parents. His six-year-old sister is also here in the USA; she is an attorney.

The trumped up charge they grabbed this physician on was a misdemeanour property damage charge of less than $100 when he was a teen. He was placed in a diversion program which was successful. The record was sealed, but apparently that doesn’t apply to ICE. So now four decades later, they are using that charge to deport him.

What I fired out:

woodtv.com
(goes to WOOD, NBC channel 8 in Kalamazoo, with video interview of his family)

A respected Kalamazoo internal medicine physician whose family fled Poland in 1979 when he was five has been seized by ICE on immigration violation. He is being held in the Calhoun County, Michigan jail pending deportation to Poland. He’s had a Green Card for four decades.

His sister was six at the time and also has a Green Card. She has not been seized.

He lives in an upscale portion of Kalamazoo, and was playing with his children by the lake when ICE agents seized him. He does not speak Polish, and has no family there.

Good thing ICE under the GOP is working on deporting all these dangerous criminals like physicians who fled communism as children. His hospital describes him as a model internal medicine physician.

ICE won’t speak of his case to the press, as is customary in immigration cases. Immigration law experts say he might get a bond hearing in February, which is unlikely to be granted, and wrangling his case could take years.

Didn’t get in the right line or some other complaint from conservatives.

Fleeing communism would get you granted political asylum back then … it could be that. The television article from Kalamazoo doesn’t say why.

My sister-in-law who fled the Soviet Union and now lives in Texas, had a Green Card for years while she wrangled the immigration system, had to go to Moscow twice (after the fall of the Soviet Union) to get paperwork because Immigration twice lost her paperwork, and only obtained her citizenship in 2012.

It’s why when reactionaries like Steve King want to deport the grandchildren of undocumented immigrants I get concerned, as that’s a crosshair right on my forehead.

If King had his way, we’d have an updated version of the 1924 Immigration Act. With Trump trying to ban people from “shithole” countries (he included Eastern Europe in that except of course his wife), I’m not feeling so secure. King isn’t a big fan of Eastern Europeans either.

Poland is a nice country, but I don’t speak Polish either.
