I think the GOP is hoping the anger over the shutdown will cause Dems to cave on DACA to reopen the government.

Good luck with that. For once, I think the Democrats are actually paying attention, and aren’t about to just roll over and die.

Don’t let anyone forget, DACA had a consensus, CHIP had a consensus, like so many of the contentious parts of this mess and Trump broke it. By no reasonable measure is the on the Dems.

Yeah. I’ll still have the party. It’ll still be fun. I mean, hey, they’re playing in our stadium, it’ll be great to watch. Unfortunately, my company didn’t get the box seats for the game… not like I would’ve been able to go, but it would’ve at least been nice to have the opportunity. But I would have preferred Jags/Vikings, that would have been badass.

The Eagles were supposed to lose against Atlanta. I’m not sure what their odds were against Minnesota, but I bet it wasn’t the margin given.

I dunno. Jags gave the Pats a fight. Maybe the Pats overlook the Iggies. Maybe Brady lands in Fargo instead of Minneapolis. I really wanted Minny and Jacksonville since neither team has won. Much more exciting than the Pats who are always in it.

No, the Eagles definitely covered the over. It was supposed to be a pretty damn close game. The Vikings just didn’t show up to play; the Minneapolis Miracle just took the last bit of fight out of them.

I should be too old to hate any sports team, but I truly hate the Patriots. It’s not jealousy, as my NFL team has won multiple Super Bowls. I have respect for Tom Brady’s talent and I do think Belichick is a damn good coach. But it’s the cheating. The absolutely documented cheating. God knows what other cheating they’ve done that hasn’t been documented, but cheaters always cheat. And their fans think that’s just fine.

It’s really no wonder at all that the Pats are Trump fans. They use the same playbook.

For me, it’s the cheating and the smug who me attitude when caught. Allegro said it last week. Being an all time great and cheating makes it all the more worse. It’s like finding out the smart kid cheated on his SATs. And yeah being Trump fans at the top doesn’t hurt either. Chris Long, who coincidentally is on the Eagles but was a NE Pat last year hates Trump tho. I like him & his family. His brother reached out to an Illinois boy bullied IIRC and Howie is Howie.

It’s not just the cheating, but it’s the consistently soft hand they seem to get from refs and officials, to the point of seemingly inventing new rules for them. The only way to ever properly beat them seems to be to embarrass them to the point even refball can’t save them.

It’s a distraction for me. Just something to follow in those winter days. I’m a Steelers fan but I’m probably most passionate about the Baltimore Orioles. I never wanted to be a Pittsburgh Steeler but I did dream of playing at Camden Yards. I’ve been to playoff games, rainy games, first place games, last place games. As far as the Super Bowl: I really thought the Eagles would lose; or squeak out a win like they did last week and then get rolled in the SB, regardless of the AFC participant.

I was really not expecting them to turn in a performance like tonight. If the team that showed up tonight shows up in Minneapolis, the Pats are gonna have to work for it.

Re: soft hand from the refs. Today the Pats were penalized a total of 10 yards. The Jags? 98 yards. As my fave sport talk dude tweeted, the NFL got the team they wanted in the Super Bowl.

Reminds me of the Steelers-Pats game this year. That one still pisses me off. Annoyed me today joe Brady was meh all day and then got it when they needed it. As I said, easy to hate.

GOP keep bitching about the immigration system’s problems and promising to fix them, but then they sabotage any bipartisan proposals and their own partisan ones tend to make the Nuremberg Laws seem kind by comparison.

Making Tom Brady uncomfortable, 15 yard penalty. Seriously the guys talented but he’s easy to dislike. New Englanders get defensive because I think they don’t like to admit they’ve become the NFL’s Yankees or what the Cowboys were for decades, a team everyone else loves to hate.

The Trump supporting just makes it easier.

So the first week of my holiday jaunt will be a work week. But, I get half my fee in advance, so yay!

I guess I might as well come out to you all.

I have been a ridiculously huge sports fan my whole life. Pretty much all sports. Went to my first football game when I was 3 and I have snapshot memories in my mind of it still.

As I became an old, I realized the one sport I love above all is soccer.

But I am conversant in pretty much all sportsball and puck, including Olympic sports. It was nearly a deal breaker with Mr. plansbandc early on. Thankfully, he finally got what it meant to me.

I love sports. I’m a fiercely competitive person. Comes from having two brothers and a stubbornness. I used to pitch in Little League. I’d definitely glare at Blue if I didn’t like the strike zone and it didn’t matter if Blue was my Dad.

There’s a good quote, you can learn a little from winning but you learn everything from losing. 15 consecutive losing seasons for my Orioles in baseball made the 2012 season all the more special for me. Being a fan of a constant winner can be fun sure but being a fan of the underdog feels more sweeter. Of course, the heartbreak is stronger. 1996, 1997, & 2014 were great years ended by heartbreak. Roger Angell has a great piece about this feeling.

I really went into this game with low expectations. The Eagles had a really easy schedule this year, and they struggled against good teams, like the Rams and the Falcons.

The Vikings were one of the best teams in the NFC. By all rights, the Eagles should have lost to the Falcons last week, and based on that performance, I was less than optimistic.

Now, I don’t know what to think. I’m still shocked at that 53 yard bomb that Foles unloaded. He had 300 pound monsters grabbing at him from all sides, but had the presence of mine to target the receiver with brutal precision.

If they bring even a third of that energy, the Pats will be in trouble.

The good news is that the Pohlads, cheap fucking bastards that they are, seem on board with signing the big starter free agents. It seems like 2018 might be our first year at contention, rather than 2019 like we’ve all been expecting. But we’ll see how the free agent silly season shakes out before we decide how firmly in contention we are. Darvish would be a nice find. I’d love to see Mauer play for a WS before he retires. He’s over his prime but a hometown boy in the WS is great baseball.

And Morneau is now a special adviser to the front office. I wish he’d been able to stick through his concussion and play out his days as a Twin. Mauer, I feel, will be retiring after this year; bringing home a WS ring would all but guarantee him the Hall of Fame, but even getting there would at least put him in the conversation.

I have a baseball autographed by Brooks Robinson. The best third baseman ever except for that week when Craig Nettles went crazy in the World Series between the Yankees and the LA Dodgers. Over the winter, Tommy LaSorda claimed that he was seated next to Nettles and Nettles dropped his fork three times.

I had his Rawlings Signature Model Glove. I played shortstop or second base in junior league ball (12 -15 year old). I was a fan even though I was Cleveland all the way.

My father graduated from Purdue, so my parents have a soft spot for Drew Brees (a Purdue alum). It’s for that reason that I wouldn’t have been totally upset if the Saints had won.

Similarly, on our worship team, we had a guy come in last Sunday wearing Saints gear. All of us in Vikings apparel gave him a hard time. Guess he’s having the last laugh after all.

I love Brees. Became 100% supporter when the stupid as fuck losing forever, left the city of San Diego Chargers cut him. & he went on to prove their perpetual stupidity. Seriously, haven’t thought of the Chargers one iota since.

Seems to be a pretty modest guy for all his success. I think it’s because he was seen as undersized and success not being immediate. He did so much for that community after Katrina. I know some dislike sports but they can bring communities together and Brees and those Saints did that.

Ahhh, Maggie and Glenn together again (hey, I thought they said Glenn could come back but no on the Whitehouse gig) spinning their palace intrigue romances we’ve all come to know and loathe.

For months, an anxious and uncertain President Trump was caught between opposing camps…Mr. Trump’s frenzied weekend search for an alternative to abruptly ending the program was a fitting finale to his anguished deliberations over DACA since he took office. Aides have portrayed it as a difficult emotional decision for the president…

“He’s being pulled in a bunch of different directions, and because he doesn’t have any strong ideological anchor, or deep knowledge of the issue, he ends up sort of not knowing what to do,” Mr. Krikorian said. (Narrator voice: Or more simply, he’s a moron.)

And, because it wouldn’t be the NYT without some bothsiderism/but Obama reference:

The no-decision decision, some in the administration conceded, is reminiscent of Mr. Obama’s deferred pledge to close the detention center at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba — another campaign promise that proved difficult to fulfill but impossible to abandon.

One of my favorite autographs is my Warren Spahn one. One year my uncle bought me a coffee table book of colored portraits of old time athletes. Few years later Spahn, Ted Williams, and some other guys were at the restaurant my Dad worked at. Management said do NOT approach Mr. Williams for autographs. Ted was a bit well Ted, a bit aloof. Anyhow I was a pitcher at the time and Spahn is the most winningest lefty ever. Dad took in my book. Showed Warren the photo asking if he knew that guy, he loved the photo, signed a message to me. Dad said he was a nice guy and very down to earth. The fun thing about Spahn is he had a good joke about Dad’s favorite player, Willie Mays, Spahn allowed Willie’s first hit, a home run, Spahn said if only he struck him out, they would have gotten rid of him. Plus he was in the Battle of the Bulge with Dads uncle. Highly unlikely they crossed paths but still neat.

A big part of the Schumer strategy seems to be to drive a wedge between the White House and the GOP on the Hill, and it seems to be working. Graham going after Stephen Miller is a very good thing. Paint Trump (correctly) as lacking any spine of his own or ability to articulate or hold to any kind of deal. And Trump is playing right into it.

Yuck is absolutely right. I know my dad loved me. After my divorce, I got the house as part of the settlement. I could call my dad any time of day and night if something went wrong at the house, and he’d show up. I kissed my dad on the cheek until he passed, but I never got up on his lap and did it, after I was above the age ofsix. The relationship between Trump and Ivanka is just creepy, reaaal creepy.

Rumor has it that the Rolling Stones are going to be in town to play a private Super Bowl party in a Minneapolis suburb.

Is Paisley Park “in a Minneapolis suburb”?

(just speculating)

And a very quiet ride.

mr. klys occasionally puts on one or the other of these as random Youtube background noise streaming and, well, let’s just say the morning where the train horn woke us up at 7am was not one of the highlights.

The table on my back deck has at least eight inches of snow adorning it, on a day when I didn’t have to drive anywhere. Looks lovely when viewed from inside the well-insulated windows. High of 45 predicted for tomorrow, so the white stuff will melt pretty quick down here in Denver. Hope it lasts longer up there, Teleskiguy!

Just glad for the moisture, and grateful I don’t have to commute at 6 a.m. tomorrow.
Night all!

This seems to be the latest fad — glass floors in everything. Pools, bridges, observation decks of very tall buildings. The Glass Council must be pushing this particular architectural detail.

I could tolerate a glass bottom boat, but anything with a lot of air under it is out. I can swim but I can’t fly.

Actually, I’d kinda like to see this catch on in NYC apt. buildings. Your glass floor being somebody else’s glass ceiling. Could get very interesting.

What can I tell ya, ski? Tall masses of rock covered with snow have never done it for me, partly because they tend to be many miles from salt water. The Gulf of Mexico is the love of my life, but all her ocean sisters are beautiful too. To each his own.

Nobody can call out a Queens guy who’s full of shit better than a Brooklyn guy. And Trump knows it. The next 48 hours ought to be really interesting. How long can Trump get away with just hiding from the whole process without looking worse and worse?

And they are both immigrants.

the yam will deny.

OK, plain old rocks way up in the air. I’m not saying they’re ugly or unscenic. But they bore me. Unlike the oceans, the colors of their eyes don’t change from day to day. They don’t sing you to sleep or shake you awake. Their only aromas are those of their trees, where they have them.

I appreciate that you love the mountains. It’s good for anyone to know what they love.

I would love to hate the Patriots but that would first require me to give a shit about Concussionball.

Late reply, but. Latest studies out are indicating that repeated head bashing can lead to CTE, no concussion required. So, basically, the game is unsafe to play, period. Pretty sure I don’t have to say this here, but parents, do not let your children play football!
