Is John Kelly the Next to Go From the Dysfunctional Trump White House?

The ongoing chaos inside the White House is not showing any signs of settling down. Now Gabriel Sherman reports that the Trump-thing is gearing up to get rid of the guy who was touted as the Great Moderating Force, after his comments last week bashing Trump’s stupid “border wall” fantasy: John Kelly.

My favorite part of this is that Trump’s gang of incompetent amateurs and dishonest scoundrels refers to Kelly as “the Church Lady.”

Last week, Kelly reportedly infuriated Trump when he told Fox News that Trump had “evolved” on his position to build a southern border wall. Kelly further catalyzed Trump’s ire when he told Democratic lawmakers that Trump was “uninformed” when he made his campaign promise to build the wall. The next morning Trump rebutted his chief of staff with a tweet: “The Wall is the Wall, it has never changed or evolved from the first day I conceived of it.”

Trump’s anger at Kelly’s immigration comments is the latest flare-up in a relationship that has been deteriorating for months. A four-star marine general, Kelly was never going to be an easy fit in a West Wing with a Lord of the Flies office culture. Staffers have bristled at Kelly’s rectitude, nicknaming him “the Church Lady,” a former official said.

Trump has increasingly been chafing at the media narrative that he needs Kelly to instill discipline on his freewheeling management style. “The more Kelly plays up that he’s being the adult in the room—that it’s basically combat duty and he’s serving the country—that kind of thing drives Trump nuts,” a Republican close to the White House said. In recent days, Trump has fumed to friends that Kelly acts like he’s running the government while Trump tweets and watches television. “I’ve got another nut job here who thinks he’s running things,” Trump told one friend, according to a Republican briefed on the call. A second source confirmed that Trump has vented about Kelly, mentioning one call in which Trump said, “This guy thinks he’s running the show.

Kelly, who would be the great moderating force and stabilizing presence to professionalize Trumpworld, is going to fall victim to the very anarchy, chaos, and incompetence that he was brought in to paper over.

I think most people are surprised he’s lasted this long, though the reality is that he shared Trump’s worldview so he was going to stick around so long as he hewed to the company line.

The moment he went off message with his own view about immigration and the shitshow in the West Wing, that was the beginning of the end for him. Nothing sets Trump off so much as thinking he’s not in charge and people reminding him he relies on others to keep his administration afloat in a sea of excrement.

About that 80+% for DACA. I wouldn’t rely on it too much. That’s only true as long as most of those voters aren’t affected by it. If the shutdown had affected people’s SS, health care, or access to parks, it would have dropped very quickly.

Just another thought…. While Kelly can have only minimal control over What Trump does, he wields a lot of control over the running of the West Wing———who gets to meet with Trump or talk with him on the phone. Without Kelly there I could easily imagine Trump bringing in the likes of Alex Jones as a special adviser.

It doesn’t matter whether or not Kelly leaves because his impact on Trump’s behavior has been negligible. If anything, Kelly has emboldened Trump. He jumped in and verbally assaulted Rep Fredricka Wilson on Trump’s behalf, even going as far as to lie about Rep Wilson. He also said some nonsense about compromising to avoid the Civil War and defended Confederate statues. He’s not a good person.

Teenagers and college students do a lot of stupid things, but most of them outgrow this behavior. Think of those college students who die of alcohol poisoning as a result of fraternity hazing.

Had a talk with a math major once at Arizona State. He said that the chances of all the Old Testament prophecies coming true was like covering Texas a foot deep in quarters and finding one specific coin on the first pull.

I did not even try to point out that if the OT had been hidden and not discovered until after the NT was written, then that might make sense, but I was not about to offend him by even implying that someone could have tweaked the NT to make things fit. Because he believed that those words were God’s Truth.

He might have been brilliant at math but he would have failed a basic course in symbolic logic.

I’m hoping for the best up here. It looks pretty nasty out from the sixth floor, but it’s not as bad looking at it from ground level. We may have 4 inches by the time I leave work. I took the bus in today so I wouldn’t have to drive in it.

I may have to finally fire up my snowblower today for the first time. I went on line at lunchtime to print out the operations manual and look up the purchase receipt. I’ve had it since November 9, 2014, and this may be the first time I put gas in it. We haven’t had a bad blizzard since I bought it, and if there’s been less than 4” of snow, I just go ahead and shovel it to get the fresh air and exercise.

Also, let me just say as someone with literally no emotional investment in, or even really knowledge of, american football, that “gronk sez: ‘no’” is absolutely perfect whether the guy appears to have already have had a knock over the head too many before his career or went in with a couple Ph.D.’s to spare. Catchy, it sticks, and it’s funny in the same way the whole meme itself is so it’s likely to reach the right audience.

They come out smelling like roses this way. Which is appropriate enough for a detergent, I suppose but still - it’s good messaging.

Original fire investigators ruled his house fire arson, and Willingham was convicted and executed for the murder of his three kids. Some forensic fire experts looked at the evidence, and scientifically struck down all indicators from the original investigation. These individuals had advanced degrees and training, and face it are just smarter than the original investigators.

The original investigators, after being shown the work by the experts, shook it off, indicating that expert knowledge of a subject doesn’t matter, if it goes against what they believe. Quote from one of the investigators:

“I don’t care how many degrees you may have; how many books you have written…”

The one in the county seat does have an ATM card, on which they will eat the transaction cost at any ATM in North America. (They do charge for currency exchange if you use it in Canada or Mexico, though.)

Even those aren’t necessarily going to be great. I have my account at the credit union where my parents opened it when I was born; because I don’t have a monthly direct deposit, I have to maintain a fairly high balance to avoid fees.

I have strong feelings about debit cards that extend to cutting them up when I get the new one in the mail.

I still advocate for a local bank or credit union (if possible) but they’re not necessarily better in this regard. (And there is sometimes something to be said for having access to the facilities of a larger bank as well. It’s up to what works best for one’s individual situation, generally.)

It’s good about monitoring for fraudulent charges. It also has hours 7 days a week. But, if you’ve only got a little money, you might find what you need in a smaller one. As for debit cards, you just really can’t operate in the area I’m in without having one.

The flipside is the most recent time my credit card number got stolen they managed to get $125 of fraudulent charges through before we found out and let the credit card company know. They immediately scratched the fraudulent charges from the bill (and went on to sort it out with Apple, since the charges were through iTunes).

If it had been a debit card that money would have already been out of our account. We’re in a position where that wouldn’t have had a lot of impact, but I know other people who would have been. I have no way of knowing where/how the number got compromised either - it could very easily have been paying for a meal or groceries or gas.

I can see both sides of the argument. There are also a lot of people for whom the credit card is too much of a temptation and so for them having one is a bad idea. But debit cards come with their own set of risks and I choose to reduce my exposure there.

If the House passes a bill like the HFC wants, they can bring it up in the Senate and vote and it will fail - it won’t even require holding up the vote with a filibuster. It’ll fail a straight majority vote.

If the Senate passes a bill with a large bipartisan majority, and Ryan won’t put to a vote in the House because he knows it would pass, then HE’S the one shutting down government. If Ryan lets it have a vote and it passes, then Trump’s the one shutting down government.

Leverage schmeverage. What will they want? Another Continuing Resolution? They and their GOP toadie followers won’t care. And when it affects real people they can go back to bitching about illegals.

Our local merchants prefer cash or cheques (most don’t take cards), but we’re special.

My wife sent me to the store for cigarettes just now.

I find most places are perfectly happy to deal with credit cards instead of debit cards and we treat them as the same thing in our house. I just prefer the extra layer of buffer between my bank account and the merchant, because fraudulent charges are a thing that happens and I would prefer to catch them before the money is withdrawn from my account.

This is the the thing about Science - it’s about the data, not the person. Of course, because it involves people, it’s easier for a prominent scientist to get a controversial new hypothesis accepted, but in the end it comes down to whether the data support the hypothesis.

The problem is, laymen don’t see it like that.If they don’t want to believe in something, than any silly asshole with ‘Dr.’ in front of his name who says he doesn’t believe it is enough. Cripes, I knew a guy who worked in Immunology, and didn’t want to believe in AGW. He insisted that a political blogger he liked who had “a background in Science” knew better than all the Climate Scientists whether there are enough weather stations to determine whether atmospheric temps are warming.

The ‘background in Science’? A BS in Psychology.

I gave up on the rewards cards cause in my world the card fee for these was massive. I now have a card with zero fees if I spend xxx each year (and that amount is easy to reach). I well admit to living on credit when I was younger & struggling with a mortgage & raising the child. I paid much interest to banks. I now enjoy the benefits of a credit card on which I pay no fees, no interest and the bank makes nothing from it. I seem to be past the age of overspending so it really has become a simple convenient, secure payment method.

The principal guy they are talking about on genetic entropy is a fellow who wrote a book on the subject, Dr. John C. Sanford.

He got a BSc in Horticulture at UMinn. He then went on to get an MSc and PhD in genetics at UWisc.

He claims he was formerly an atheist but gradually became a creationist through his studies.

One of the issues with scientists who go to work for Wingnut Welfare is generally they are failed as scientists (as evidenced by a lack of papers, or papers which are not cited by other works). They still have the degree though, so folks like the Heartland Institute or Answers in Genesis will hire them. (The folks who follow those organisations do not know that PhD does not equal successful scientist.)

I remember Pres Obama having to fight so hard to get his 60 votes for the ACA - and it was democrats he was having to convince to vote with him. I find it disappointing regardless as to the how and why.

In doing so, he somehow managed to suggest that his customers were stupid and ripped his employees for going to school. Nice!

His customers, he explained, would be personally insulted if he had to raise prices in order to pay his employees in accordance with the law, explaining “they’re not educated, they don’t understand what’s happening.”

Let us take a moment and look at the menu for “Uncle Jack’s Steakhouse,” shall we? Apparently, they are already charging $10 for a “house salad” consisting of lettuce, Bermuda onions, carrots and dressing. They are charging $10 to split an entrée. They are charging $8 for a side of mashed potatoes.

Now, perhaps these are normal New York steakhouse prices. My editrix says they are. All I can tell you is that if someone told me they paid $8 for a side of mashed potatoes I would demand to know if the place they dined at sent a damn car over to get them first. I am actually somewhat inclined to agree with Degel on how smart his customers are, only I personally do not think that a person who is already paying $10 for a side salad is going to balk at an $11 side salad. His prices are already ridiculous, so if he can’t pay his own employees, that’s on him.

I can honestly understand how that happens. Employers (small business owners) usually have to bust their asses for years before they really see the fruits of their labor. And more often than not, it’s been a long time since they were on the other side of the equation of the employee-employer relationship. But this guy goes above and beyond when it comes to being an asshole. He is so incredibly dismissive of his employees (servants? really?) and his customers that his business deserves to fail.

It does seem amazing to me how many folk will argue variants of “you’re an atheist so you must believe in evolution” (as if both are religions and are actually related to each other).

I accept what those who study the overwhelming mountain of evidence have to say on the subject. (And there are atheists who do not accept evolution.)

we learned the historical method: confirmation by independent, original sources

Everyone believes in evolution by natural selection, because it makes sense on such a deep level. They grasp the basics right off. All you have to do is show them the black vs white moths and the soot-blackened vs unstained bark they live on and people get it. That’s how simple evolution is.

In order to disbelieve descent from common ancestors by natural selection on naturally occurring genetic variation, you have to actively engage in mental gymnastics - you can accept that radically different forms of cat evolved from a common ancestor, but you have to deny that cats and dogs could have evolved from a common ancestor. There’s no reasonable argument against it, so you have to go biblical, with ‘Kinds’.

There’s probably some truth to that. I think there was a culture shift in the 90s (the age of everyone getting degrees in business administration and MBAs) that built off of cultural touchstones like the movies Wall Street and Boiler Room.

Again, it’s also a personality/experience thing - business owners really do put in insane hours and don’t always see grand returns (I remember as a kid having to listen to the Super Bowl on the radio because my parents were working that Sunday in the office)

There is some merit to the fact that concreting over swampland has negative consequences. Also merit to the fact that the city of Houston has allowed subdivisions to be built within high risk areas including within the Addicks flood reservoir (that never over-topped since it was built until Harvey, but still). Both of these result in increased damage. But yeah, they have nothing to do with the amount of fucking water that dropped on us and the shocking increase of the severity of the storms we have been seeing the past decade that are continuing to worsen.

There’s probably some truth to that. I think there was a culture shift in the 90s (the age of everyone getting degrees in business administration and MBAs) that built off of cultural touchstones like the movies Wall Street and Boiler Room.

Again, it’s also a personality/experience thing - business owners really do put in insane hours and don’t always see grand returns (I remember as a kid having to listen to the Super Bowl on the radio because my parents were working that Sunday in the office)

I’d push that back to the 80s. Watch the popular movies, starting back during The Depression, and businessmen were generally viewed with suspicion, the larger the business the greater the suspicion. Think Frank Capra movies, for example.

Enter the Reagan Era, and suddenly entrepreneurs become all the rage.

Hopefully this deal goes through and a permanent solution for DACA is passed. But the Democrats in Congress have to decide what they stand for and communicate that to people, because “anti-Trump” isn’t going to be enough come November.

This pipeline will never be built.

After TransCanada last week announced shockingly weak support from customers looking to transport tarsands on its proposed Keystone XL pipeline, it has become more clear than ever that this pipeline is not needed, and will never be built.

The company could only secure commitments for 500,000 barrels-per-day (bpd) for KXL, which has a capacity of 830,000 bpd — and that’s only after the Canadian government gave TransCanada a giant gift subsidy to boost the numbers.

TransCanada and its investors also still have not made a Final Investment Decision (FID) on whether or not the company will even move forward with the project, despite saying it would make the announcement in December — a testament to the unlikely alliance standing strong in opposition — including the Nebraska landowners who filed a legal challenge to the Public Service Commission’s approval of the “Mainline Alternative” route for the pipeline through Nebraska.

Oral arguments in the landowners’ court case challenging the PSC’s approval of an *illegal* route for KXL are expected to be scheduled in late 2018.

Chip in to help cover legal costs for Nebraska landowners fighting KXL.
In the meantime, Bold is helping the Nebraska Easement Action Team (N.E.A.T.) identify and contact newly affected landowners on the “Mainline Alternative” pipeline route, to grow the collective of farmers and ranchers united in refusing to sell their land to TransCanada for KXL.

People keep saying this, but it seems to me that Trump’s agenda is primarily destructive, whether it’s trying to destroy the ACA, or regulations for the environment or worker safety or consumer protection, or women’s rights, or immigration. It’s all about negating what the Democrats have put in place.

Anti-Trump is actually a positive agenda, the same positive agenda Dems have long stood for. So, what do we stand for is pretty goddam easy to see.

And I’d note, the GOP managed to take over the House and the Senate on nothing more than simple obstruction.

Clarke is not involved, since he is no longer sheriff (or a resident of Wisconsin). It is a civil trial against the office of sheriff. I think!

This is truth. Goes waaaay back here in Texas which is why we can’t get our millions of Hispanic citizens especially to vote. They just don’t see any advantage to either party and it can be difficult to argue against their beliefs. If the Democrats want Texas, it’s actually theirs if they are willing to fight. DACA is an ideal place to do it.

So, you want them to make Sophie’s choice: They should have stood firm on DACA until Republicans caved, even if that meant all of the parents of children needing CHIP turned away from Democrats. Remember, if Democrats had caved, CHIP would have been funded (it was in the House version already) and there would have been no action on DACA. This at least keeps DACA in the news. And by not agreeing to a long term resolution, but a two week one, the next vote is about DACA.

And by not agreeing to a long term resolution, but a two week one, the next vote is about DACA.

My hope is it really puts pressure on McConnell big time.

In my experience many but not all self-proclaimed libertarians are often conservatives in denial, I know a lot of anti-immigrant, anti-choice, anti-LGBT, etc people who call themselves that label. They’re like Ron Paul. they simply hate the federal anti-drug laws which I should add, I agree with them on but Ron Paul is one of the biggest charlatans in politics of the past 20 years. He has not said one word about the rise of xenophobia becaues he doesn’t care about bigotry. In fact, until Trump came along, he was the favorite of people like Spencer, Duke, and the others.

It wasn’t just parents who depend on CHIP for their children. There were numerous households like my own who have either active military, civil servants, or federal employees who don’t have emergency stashes of money ready to wait out a weeks long government shutdown. I actually found myself wondering if I could help keep my household afloat on my paycheck alone if this went on for 3 weeks like it did in 2013.

Eventually there’s gonna have to be a recognition by the far-left that we can’t always get a perfect ending to every confrontation with the GOP, that we’re gonna have to pick the battles we can win and take what we can get rather than holding out in the hopes that we’ll get everything. Polls were already squishy on the subject of making the shutdown about the DACA and if it had gone on for weeks, we might have actually soured that public support and given Donny the leverage he needed to extract painful concessions just to reopen the government.

Some shutdown reading, all from the Washington Monthly:

D.R. Tucker says the shutdown really started 11/8/16, because of the people who voted for DT to “shake things up,” and that the shutdown was on them.

Nancy LeTourneau’s article is on Stephen Miller, and his long-term goal of using DACA to force big changes to long-established legal immigration.

The president didn’t describe a merit-based immigration system; he was talking about a race-based immigration system centered on countries of origin.

What this comes down to is that there is, in fact, an urgency to the Dreamers’ situation, instigated by this administration’s decision to end the DACA program. Stephen Miller’s plan all along has been to use that urgency to force changes to the legal immigration programs that currently benefit what Trump called “shithole” countries and replace them with programs that favor immigrants from countries like Norway (read: white) and Asia (whom many of the nativists see as so-called “model minorities”).

This country’s priorities for legal immigration should be debated in the daylight so that the American people know the stakes. Instead, it is happening behind closed doors via negotiations over a government shutdown, couched in the dog-whistle language of words like “merit-based,” which masks the underlying racism. It is probably safe to assume that people like Miller know they would lose this argument if it were to be held out in the open. Let’s shed a little sunshine, shall we?

And more Nancy LeTourneau on the fault-finding after the shutdown:

If you think that Democrats have a strong case to make on the Dream Act, that fight is now on, with a showdown vote in the Senate amidst a government shutdown if a broader deal isn’t reached. On the other hand, if you think that standing up for Dreamers is a weak hand for Democrats, then today’s agreement is a major cause for concern and could be characterized as a cave.

Ugh. I just looked out the sixth floor window and all of the streets are filled with cars that are not moving. I’m going to end up waiting 40 minutes for the bus and then spending another 80 minutes getting the 3.5 miles from the office to home. This is nasty. I’ll update when I get home.

I was way wrong about how long I’d have to wait for the bus - I was at the stop for an hour and 40 minutes before the bus showed up. It’s supposed to come by every 20 minutes. Seven buses should have come by in the time I waited. When it did come, it was packed to the gills with similarly frozen and snow covered riders.

The amount of snow in my neighborhood is impressive. Cars are stuck everywhere and there’s a school bus stuck outside my house. There’s well over a foot of snow in my street and 9-10” on the back sidewalk, and it’s still coming down. We haven’t had a snowfall like this for at least five years.

A responsible Congress wouldn’t have cut taxes on the rich and made the rest of us pay for it. A responsible party wouldn’t hold millions of children’s lives for months as a threat to try to get people to vote a certain way. A responsible party wouldn’t pit one group against another. A responsible party would stand up to their leader if he was acting in ways that violated the constitution and hurt the country.

Pitting CHIP against DACA was not a choice made by Democrats. It was made by Republicans. Going back on their word to help Dreamers was not a choice made by Democrats. It was made by Republicans.

There is only one party, one group in this country, to be mad at. And that is the Republican party.

I need to yell at them.

Not sure, but the deal that was struck funds CHIP for 6 years, which takes 8.9 Million kids healthcare off the table. Republicans were always much more willing to let them go without coverage. Hell, a lot of them, if they were honest, don’t believe in CHIP anyway.

Now, they don’t have that as leverage over the Dems, who actually DO care.
