I’ve been going back and forth tonight on social media with friends - some of them IRL friends - who are taking the idealistic approach and declaring themselves “done” with the Democratic Party and so on.
Me, I’m a pragmatist and not afraid to say so. I think there was just only so much leverage a party in the minority could muster. And so the question I keep asking my friends is: “What else could Schumer and company have done in the real world? What would you have had them do that would have gotten you something that, right now, painfully, just isn’t going to happen given all the power mustered against it?”
There doesn’t seem to be a good answer to that. Which sucks. But it just means we have to keep fighting harder with whatever power we actually have - and more so, whatever power we can pick up in November.

The idealists want to believe that if the DNC had just held out, that the GOP would have eventually caved and made DACA law. But what if the GOP never caved? The idealists really seem to have mistaken public support for Dreamers for public support for whatever hardball tactics are deemed “necessary” to get the GOP to pass DACA. What good would it do the Dreamers if holding out for weeks led to public opinion souring so badly that the DNC was forced to accept whatever demands Trump made just to get the government open again. Once the polls flipped and it was the DNC who was blamed for the shutdown and negative opinion began building, the GOP would had the leverage to demand concessions just to bring the CR up for a vote.
That the idealists are allowing the good to be the enemy of the perfect, are dismissing the success of getting CHIP reauthorized for 6-years because DACA still remains in limbo, is only strengthening the GOP’s hand. Abandoning the fight now by saying the DNC “caved” just makes it more likely that McConnell will get his way in 3 weeks and the next CR passed without DACA getting a vote.

Rep. Adrian Smith (R-NE3) just sent an E-mail saying the government has been re-opened.
He of course blamed the Dems for the shutdown. He also says he feels DACA should be addressed as a separate bill, not as a funding bill.
He also is going to Montreal as part of a delegation to talk about NAFTA.

NAFTA is a concern to farmers and ranchers here. Adrian Smith broadly supports it, but I’m not sure he’s the guy to negotiate anything.

The House GOP already let the cat out of the bag on Dreamers with their version of the CR, designating them as “temporary residents,” which would allow said temporary status to be revoked any time they wished to do it.
There are plenty in the GOP who are quite willing to kick immigrants, their children, and their grandchildren out, along with stripping citizenship (see people like Steve King).
The GOP chained eight million children up in their basement four months ago over CHIP, while at least promising to work on the DACA issue in the near future (before the CR expires).
It didn’t matter how it played out: Had the Dems held out for both (and in reality Adrian Smith is right: DACA is not a funding issue, while CHIP is), they’d’ve gotten neither.
Had they held out the other way (DACA over CHIP) it would have been endless caterwauling over “Democrats don’t care about children.”
The finger needs to be pointed at the GOP over this: They knew both CHIP and DACA were coming up and specifically took both hostage to browbeat Democrats.
We got part of what we wanted: Now we go back for the rest.

By delaying over the weekend, and reaching a “deal” today, Democrats separated CHIP and DACA, and kept DACA in the story. Had they caved on Friday, we’d be done with DACA.

We wouldn’t be in this situation to begin with if the purity-over-all wing of the party (and the outsiders that act like they are on our side but never vote anyway) actually voted for the right Presidential candidate. Voting during the midterms is just as important too.
Now that we are stuck as the minority party with Trump as President with very few options until November, they flip out because Dems are forced to compromise. God, I wish they’d wake the fuck up.

I have a lot of respect for Democratic politicians in the House and Senate. They have little power with both Houses and the Presidency controlled by Republicans. The Media if not downright hostile, generally accepts Republican framing by default, gives them little air time and much of what they do give is to liberals who want to piss from outside the tent in instead of inside the tent out. Despite this, they’re holding the line as best they can. In return, they get regularly dumped on by ostensible allies because they can’t win every battle and have to settle for what they can get, despite the fact if it weren’t for these fickle allies, we wouldn’t be in this position in the first place.
Democratic politicians wouldn’t have to fight this hard just to limit the damage if the all the morons criticizing them now for not doing enough had just gotten their backsides off the couch and voted, or had refrained from holding their purity parties at the ballot box by casting their vote for a 3rd party. If the people who are pissed off now had bothered to show up, Democrats would control the Senate and the Presidency and both CHIP and DACA wouldn’t have been in this precarious situation, ICE wouldn’t be running wild, our international relations wouldn’t be in the toilet and we’d have a Supreme Court majority.
You want to know who is responsible for DACA being on the chopping block? It’s not Democrats and Democratic politicians. It’s the asshatts who didn’t vote for them last election.

How would the DNC have been able to turn that down? And how could we continue to push for DACA if the major issue (deportation of Dreamers) had been addressed for the immediate future?
There are far less favorable scenarios than the one that played out today. The fight continues and we’re now in a position to apply greater pressure on the GOP to get DACA made law. To say we “lost” today or that we “caved” is to abandon the fight, to say that there was no way we could have won it without complete capitulation of the GOP on the first go. And that’s not something I’m prepared to accept, nor should anyone who supports the Dreamers.

I agree. The war is won by one victory at a time. McConnell is going to have a tough time backing out of his promise for a vote on DACA. McConnell making this promise must be brought up by every Democrat every chance they get between now and the next CR vote. Make sure the public understands the “promise”.
One other point. The CHIP deal runs out in 2024….right in front of a Presidential election. Of course, most of today’s players will probably be gone.

He was imprisoned there for attempting to assassinate Napoleon III. He had initially been sentenced to the guillotine and 2 of his co-conspirators were in fact executed before the sentences were commuted. He enlisted during the Civil War, when they were not overly particular about such things. He stayed in the army after the war. He was with Reno’s group at Little Bighorn and was trapped in the trees beside the river when the command’s initial attack was defeated. He and 2 other soldiers hid there for 36 hours. As a young man, he had also survived a shipwreck off the coast of Spain. Amazingly, he lived to age 78 and died of natural causes.

Here’s another to consider: With all the sniping and anger that’s being directed by the far-left towards the DNC over this deal, there may very well be a serious question among the leadership about whether or not its worth continuing this fight. If the people they’re fighting in the name of, who they are risking their own political futures in defense of, are being seen as ungrateful and even resentful, then it gets harder to argue that sticking the party’s neck out for them is worthwhile. Remember, there’s lower hanging fruit right now, such as fighting for a minimum wage increase, which would be an easier sell in a time of supposed unending prosperity.

And building up your base on fool’s errands doesn’t amount to much if it costs you races down the line. We’re on defensive here, with way more Senate seats being defended by the DNC this year than the other way around. And many of those are in states the Trump won last year. If Dem Senators from those states feel they’re not going to see any positive outcome to sticking their necks out on DACA, they will be less inclined to support Schumer later in the year.

As I noted, I hear the “I drank the water here all my life and I’m just fine” line from people in my village. They don’t, however, complain about the RO units here to remove arsenic and uranium.
In reality, if they want to drink plain water from the tap, there is nothing I can do to stop them.
Arsenic in the water probably won’t poison you (unless there’s a lot of arsenic), but is known to increase cancer risk.
The established standard is 0.010 mg/litre. Our water is 0.012 mg/litre from the last test in December.

Yes, there are. There has always been a large population of them in the city. I’ve seen them trotting down Westheimer and other busy main streets especially near restaurants where they get lots of good nosh around the dumpsters. Probably everyone has seen them but most think they’re dogs.
Except during periods of rabies epidemics, they are for the most part beneficial, IMO. They stay out of trouble with people and pets since they have plenty of prey and as solitary critters they attract little attention to freak people out.

Both places mentioned in the article, Whitharral and Grasslands, are near Lubbock. I am not familiar with Grasslands, but I have been to Whitharral. There is almost literally nothing there but a school complex that serves the local farm families. There are a few older houses left over from better, more populous, times; and a handful of newer ones for teachers and one or two government employees. It does not even have a feed store and I really don’t remember if there is a convenience store. The modern, well equipped schools dominate the community, both physically and socially. This is a lot of the reason for the extraordinary emphasis on high school sports, especially football, in Texas. It almost completely defines the community’s existence.

Her stupidity in believing a con man is her own fault. A man who filed for bankruptcy six times isn’t, in my opinion, a “successful” businessman and dealmaker. Many people read a limited number of news sources and are not provided a fair analysis of the issues of the time. I suspect she may be someone who could be persuaded to vote otherwise.
