I’ve been going back and forth tonight on social media with friends - some of them IRL friends - who are taking the idealistic approach and declaring themselves “done” with the Democratic Party and so on.

Me, I’m a pragmatist and not afraid to say so. I think there was just only so much leverage a party in the minority could muster. And so the question I keep asking my friends is: “What else could Schumer and company have done in the real world? What would you have had them do that would have gotten you something that, right now, painfully, just isn’t going to happen given all the power mustered against it?”

There doesn’t seem to be a good answer to that. Which sucks. But it just means we have to keep fighting harder with whatever power we actually have - and more so, whatever power we can pick up in November.

Tell them they need to be angry at Republicans for being willing to risk millions of people’s lives just to set this up. This was not by accident. Both DACA and CHIP could have been fixed last year, but McConnell wanted to manufacture a crisis as a gotcha moment.

Bingo.

Problem is, the narrative. Which sadly even most of the folks on our own side will defer to, especially when it blames Dems.

The idealists want to believe that if the DNC had just held out, that the GOP would have eventually caved and made DACA law. But what if the GOP never caved? The idealists really seem to have mistaken public support for Dreamers for public support for whatever hardball tactics are deemed “necessary” to get the GOP to pass DACA. What good would it do the Dreamers if holding out for weeks led to public opinion souring so badly that the DNC was forced to accept whatever demands Trump made just to get the government open again. Once the polls flipped and it was the DNC who was blamed for the shutdown and negative opinion began building, the GOP would had the leverage to demand concessions just to bring the CR up for a vote.

That the idealists are allowing the good to be the enemy of the perfect, are dismissing the success of getting CHIP reauthorized for 6-years because DACA still remains in limbo, is only strengthening the GOP’s hand. Abandoning the fight now by saying the DNC “caved” just makes it more likely that McConnell will get his way in 3 weeks and the next CR passed without DACA getting a vote.

We get relief reading about the fuck ups, the bizarre, AND the collusion etc.

But in the end he’s going to be bad for every single thing we hold dear, every minute he remains.

Rep. Adrian Smith (R-NE3) just sent an E-mail saying the government has been re-opened.

He of course blamed the Dems for the shutdown. He also says he feels DACA should be addressed as a separate bill, not as a funding bill.

He also is going to Montreal as part of a delegation to talk about NAFTA.

I’m seriously wishing the democrats had held out for CHIP and DACA. Don’t give up. For me the reason is this-the dems are arguing to keep good people, fed and with medical care. The GOP simply argues against letting immigrants in, keeping those we have, taking care of the dreamer kids, or those of the poor.

For or against taking care of deserving humans. Choose wisely.

The House GOP already let the cat out of the bag on Dreamers with their version of the CR, designating them as “temporary residents,” which would allow said temporary status to be revoked any time they wished to do it.

There are plenty in the GOP who are quite willing to kick immigrants, their children, and their grandchildren out, along with stripping citizenship (see people like Steve King).

The GOP chained eight million children up in their basement four months ago over CHIP, while at least promising to work on the DACA issue in the near future (before the CR expires).

It didn’t matter how it played out: Had the Dems held out for both (and in reality Adrian Smith is right: DACA is not a funding issue, while CHIP is), they’d’ve gotten neither.

Had they held out the other way (DACA over CHIP) it would have been endless caterwauling over “Democrats don’t care about children.”

The finger needs to be pointed at the GOP over this: They knew both CHIP and DACA were coming up and specifically took both hostage to browbeat Democrats.

We got part of what we wanted: Now we go back for the rest.

By delaying over the weekend, and reaching a “deal” today, Democrats separated CHIP and DACA, and kept DACA in the story. Had they caved on Friday, we’d be done with DACA.

And, as I am trying to say indirectly: There’s more than two choices.

We wouldn’t be in this situation to begin with if the purity-over-all wing of the party (and the outsiders that act like they are on our side but never vote anyway) actually voted for the right Presidential candidate. Voting during the midterms is just as important too.

Now that we are stuck as the minority party with Trump as President with very few options until November, they flip out because Dems are forced to compromise. God, I wish they’d wake the fuck up.

“I’m leaving the Dem party” is exactly the attitude that got us here in the first place.

I hate saying it but the longer the shutdown went on, the easier it would have been to pull the illegals against the troops bs. And it could have had some impact. I understand the frustration and I don’t blame anyone who voted no and I sure as hell don’t trust McConnell but I think we got some pressure on the bastard.

Illegals vs. the troops wouldn’t have been nearly as devastating as illegals vs. the uninsured children dying during a worse than normal flu season (ignoring the fact that our ability to respond has been damaged by the Republicans).

36
Weaselone  Jan 22, 2018 • 6:59:29pm

I have a lot of respect for Democratic politicians in the House and Senate. They have little power with both Houses and the Presidency controlled by Republicans. The Media if not downright hostile, generally accepts Republican framing by default, gives them little air time and much of what they do give is to liberals who want to piss from outside the tent in instead of inside the tent out. Despite this, they’re holding the line as best they can. In return, they get regularly dumped on by ostensible allies because they can’t win every battle and have to settle for what they can get, despite the fact if it weren’t for these fickle allies, we wouldn’t be in this position in the first place.

Democratic politicians wouldn’t have to fight this hard just to limit the damage if the all the morons criticizing them now for not doing enough had just gotten their backsides off the couch and voted, or had refrained from holding their purity parties at the ballot box by casting their vote for a 3rd party. If the people who are pissed off now had bothered to show up, Democrats would control the Senate and the Presidency and both CHIP and DACA wouldn’t have been in this precarious situation, ICE wouldn’t be running wild, our international relations wouldn’t be in the toilet and we’d have a Supreme Court majority.

You want to know who is responsible for DACA being on the chopping block? It’s not Democrats and Democratic politicians. It’s the asshatts who didn’t vote for them last election.

Suppose that McConnell or (worse) Trump had come out and said that they were prepared to grant temporary resident status to all Dreamers in exchange for passing this CR. How would the DNC have been able to turn that down? And how could we continue to push for DACA if the major issue (deportation of Dreamers) had been addressed for the immediate future?

There are far less favorable scenarios than the one that played out today. The fight continues and we’re now in a position to apply greater pressure on the GOP to get DACA made law. To say we “lost” today or that we “caved” is to abandon the fight, to say that there was no way we could have won it without complete capitulation of the GOP on the first go. And that’s not something I’m prepared to accept, nor should anyone who supports the Dreamers.

I agree. The war is won by one victory at a time. McConnell is going to have a tough time backing out of his promise for a vote on DACA. McConnell making this promise must be brought up by every Democrat every chance they get between now and the next CR vote. Make sure the public understands the “promise”.

One other point. The CHIP deal runs out in 2024….right in front of a Presidential election. Of course, most of today’s players will probably be gone.

Immigrant soldiers are a tradition in the US armed forces. During the Civil War there were whole regiments of immigrants in the US Army. Half the men who died with Custer at Little Bighorn were immigrants.
The amazing Lt. Charles DeRudio was one of the survivors. He was an illegal immigrant in fact, since he had made his way to the US after he escaped from Devil’s Island. He was imprisoned there for attempting to assassinate Napoleon III. He had initially been sentenced to the guillotine and 2 of his co-conspirators were in fact executed before the sentences were commuted. He enlisted during the Civil War, when they were not overly particular about such things. He stayed in the army after the war. He was with Reno’s group at Little Bighorn and was trapped in the trees beside the river when the command’s initial attack was defeated. He and 2 other soldiers hid there for 36 hours. As a young man, he had also survived a shipwreck off the coast of Spain. Amazingly, he lived to age 78 and died of natural causes.

My second great grandfather was one of those immigrant soldiers. He hadn’t been in the US long when he enlisted in 1862. DeRudio should have a movie by the way. What a life! I’d watch that. One of my three tattoos is for the Irish Brigade. They too fled a so called “shithole” and were some of the bravest men who fought for Lincoln.

With CHIP secure for the foreseeable future, DACA focus can also turn on Dreamers who are on active duty or in the reserves. Throwing them out of the country directly impacts military readiness, something the GOP claims to care about.

With CHIP secure for the foreseeable future, DACA focus can also turn on Dreamers who are on active duty or in the reserves. Throwing them out of the country directly impacts military readiness, something the GOP claims to care about.

They really need to go with that and also the fact that the DACA kids are employed at a high rate too. Go at the GOP where it hurts.

re: #21 Belafon

By delaying over the weekend, and reaching a “deal” today, Democrats separated CHIP and DACA, and kept DACA in the story. Had they caved on Friday, we’d be done with DACA.

And, as I am trying to say indirectly: There’s more than two choices.

Oh the last thing I wanted was Fridays deal. I did not see the shutdown as so bad for the left, but I could be wrong.

Here’s another to consider: With all the sniping and anger that’s being directed by the far-left towards the DNC over this deal, there may very well be a serious question among the leadership about whether or not its worth continuing this fight. If the people they’re fighting in the name of, who they are risking their own political futures in defense of, are being seen as ungrateful and even resentful, then it gets harder to argue that sticking the party’s neck out for them is worthwhile. Remember, there’s lower hanging fruit right now, such as fighting for a minimum wage increase, which would be an easier sell in a time of supposed unending prosperity.

And building up your base on fool’s errands doesn’t amount to much if it costs you races down the line. We’re on defensive here, with way more Senate seats being defended by the DNC this year than the other way around. And many of those are in states the Trump won last year. If Dem Senators from those states feel they’re not going to see any positive outcome to sticking their necks out on DACA, they will be less inclined to support Schumer later in the year.

DACA is a rather abstract concept to most Americans. Sure they support kids who have been here most of their lives. Right after they support taking their kids to the doctor, or paying their rent, or getting their meal. All of which could be affected by a shutdown. How long would you have them hold out?

How committed are some rural Texans to the Republican ideologies of deregulation and lower taxes? Committed enough to let their children drink more arsenic:

“We’re aware of the contaminants, and we treat it individually in our own houses,” Craig said. “Yet we’re still subject to these regulations, and we have to spend time and money taking care of that when we would rather find a better way.”

But he also cast doubt on the regulations themselves. In order to circumvent them, Craig said he anticipates the utility becoming a private water system within the year.

Ed Sharp, who manages the Whitharral Water Supply Corporation on a volunteer basis, also said the limits the EPA sets are too strict, adding that he’s consumed the water for years with no problems.

“They [the limits] used to be okay, but what happened was the federal government, when Barack Obama was elected, about two years after, the EPA lowered the amount of fluoride and the amount of nitrates you can have in the water,” Sharp said. “We were okay until that number got moved. When they moved it, that put us out of compliance.”
…….
State agency officials have repeatedly described EPA limits on various air and water pollutants — including arsenic — as overly cautious even when they are supported by a majority of scientists and public health experts.

In its 2016 study of arsenic in the state’s drinking water, the Environmental Integrity Project found that Texas requires public water utilities to use less-urgent language than some other states in the notices they send to customers when their drinking water exceeds the arsenic standard.”

And this is the key details:

The event piqued our interest because these fringe right groups don’t often publicly congregate in New York City, so it was likely there would be violent clashes between protesters and partygoers (there were), a heavy police presence (there was) and some familiar faces on the American extremism beat. McInnes, for one, is a member of the Proud Boys, a crew of extremist “pro-Westerners” that has ties to white supremacy and attracts racists and fascists into its ranks. These aren’t your run-of-the-mill Trump supporters, but they’re often the loudest, and they were all in one place.

Secondly, there was word that Chelsea Manning was going to show up. And for some bizarre reason, she did!

Snowden, Greenwald, and Assange hardly subscribe to identical beliefs, and differ in their levels of sophistication. They have held, at one time or another, a crazy-quilt assortment of views, some of them blatantly contradictory. But from an incoherent swirl of ideas, a common outlook emerges. The outlook is neither a clear-cut doctrine nor a philosophy, but something closer to a political impulse that might be described, to borrow from the historian Richard Hofstadter, as paranoid libertarianism. Where liberals, let alone right-wingers, have portrayed the leakers as truth-telling comrades intent on protecting the state and the Constitution from authoritarian malefactors, that’s hardly their goal. In fact, the leakers despise the modern liberal state, and they want to wound it.

May 24, 2000 the EPA proposed lowering the standard for arsenic in water, which was previously set in 1975, based on a Public Health Service survey in 1942. (That would have been the end of the Clinton Administration, not GW Bush, I was mistaken.)

c) both

As I noted, I hear the “I drank the water here all my life and I’m just fine” line from people in my village. They don’t, however, complain about the RO units here to remove arsenic and uranium.

In reality, if they want to drink plain water from the tap, there is nothing I can do to stop them.

Arsenic in the water probably won’t poison you (unless there’s a lot of arsenic), but is known to increase cancer risk.

The established standard is 0.010 mg/litre. Our water is 0.012 mg/litre from the last test in December.

DACA has the support of over 80% of Americans and is something Democrats need to support on principle. You don’t abandon your principles because of criticism or frustration. That’s exactly what many find disheartening about Democrats.

That poll may be true, but put that up against your job, your children, your health insurance, &c, and I’ll bet that number would plummet (especially amongst GOP voters).

No one’s given up anything yet.

One Saturday a couple of years ago I was driving downtown through Memorial Park and a coyote ran across the road in front of me, picking his spot without a glance at the oncoming traffic. I’m sure there are a lot that live in the park and along the railroad rights-of-way.

Yes, there are. There has always been a large population of them in the city. I’ve seen them trotting down Westheimer and other busy main streets especially near restaurants where they get lots of good nosh around the dumpsters. Probably everyone has seen them but most think they’re dogs.

Except during periods of rabies epidemics, they are for the most part beneficial, IMO. They stay out of trouble with people and pets since they have plenty of prey and as solitary critters they attract little attention to freak people out.

What can you say to people who are okay with poisoning themselves and their kids in the name of deregulation? Idiots? I’m speechless.

Both places mentioned in the article, Whitharral and Grasslands, are near Lubbock. I am not familiar with Grasslands, but I have been to Whitharral. There is almost literally nothing there but a school complex that serves the local farm families. There are a few older houses left over from better, more populous, times; and a handful of newer ones for teachers and one or two government employees. It does not even have a feed store and I really don’t remember if there is a convenience store. The modern, well equipped schools dominate the community, both physically and socially. This is a lot of the reason for the extraordinary emphasis on high school sports, especially football, in Texas. It almost completely defines the community’s existence.

The idea of healthcare reform enjoyed support in the same range, and even portions of the ACA had support approaching or exceeding that level. But when you started talking the specifics, particularly if those specifics called for people paying taxes or fees, the support plummeted.

Same thing with DACA, 80%+ of American voters support it in principle, support allowing Dreamers with jobs and clean records to stay here. But once you get into the actual details, particularly if such will involve spending of any kind, expect that number to drop.

Trey Gowdy and Ratcliffe were on Fox where they pushed the idea that a “secret society” exists within the federal government in D.C. They were referring to the social media exchanges between Strzok and Page. It sounded like a huge nothingburger to me, but I’m well aware of how GOPers can take a nothing and spend millions trying to prove that the nothing is actually something. It was after this session on Fox that “secret society” gained more attention on social media. It’s also the reason Lou Dobbs is calling for anyone employed by the federal government who doesn’t kiss Trump’s *ss to be arrested and tried for something he cooked up in his fevered brain.

Her stupidity in believing a con man is her own fault. A man who filed for bankruptcy six times isn’t, in my opinion, a “successful” businessman and dealmaker. Trump was all bombast filled with lies and hypocrisy, and if she believed he would be personally interested in saving her job, there’s something wrong with her ability to differentiate between reality and fantasy. Trump sold them fantasies and their gullible behinds bought it. I’m sorry she lost her job, but it didn’t have to be this way. She enabled her own demise, and I don’t want to listen to, or read about, her regrets about how she voted.

I personally know a woman of Mexican heritage who is one of the kindest people you would ever meet. Her daughter declined to speak to her for months because she voted for Trump. I do not know why — but it may have been extreme anti-choice views as a devout Catholic that led her to this decision. Many people read a limited number of news sources and are not provided a fair analysis of the issues of the time. I suspect she may be someone who could be persuaded to vote otherwise.
