South Korea is already preparing a WTO complaint over this. I expect Germany and China will join the suit. This is so beyond the pale, arbitrary and capricious that they might even award punitive damages, especially considering the context of Trump pulling us out of the Paris Agreement.

I suspect Trump would be more than happy to leave the WTO, so the America can be great again by gouging every other country’s exports to the USA.

He obviously does not understand that making imported goods more expensive to buy does not automatically create the capacity to make those goods domestically. US companies shuttered factories in the States long ago and moved production offshore. They can’t now flick a switch and reopen those plants at his beck and call.

China will be especially pissed, since American consumption of Chinese-made products is a huge boon to China’s economy.

I hate fake astronomy photos like this one, trying to reinforce the false idea that the pyramids at Giza have some kind of planetary alignment.

Right now, Mercury, Venus and Saturn are all near the Sun. The first two are barely visible. So, where’s the Sun in this photo? Not only that, the colors of the planets are all wrong, even if the saturation were boosted.

EDIT: Apparently, this photo has been circulating since 2012, if not earlier. blogs.discovermagazine.com

There is no need for a Mueller investigation: there are enough blatant and egregious examples of violations of the emoluments clause, conflict of interest and obstruction of justice that they could initiate proceedings at any time if the will were there.

Mueller is trying to present a case so clear-cut that they simply cannot ignore it, which is why they are going out of their way to discredit him and the entire FBI well in advance.

I’m pretty sure Congress knows the jig is up with Trump & Co. It’s just a matter of time before Mueller drops the bomb and makes it impossible for them to ignore what they are all covering up. [I’m speaking of the GOP here, just to be clear.] Likely, some Congress-critters will be implicated as well, and if I were they, I’d be angling for a way out of prosecution. But, people like Nunes and Rohrabacher seem oblivious to their precarious situations.

Trump as well. He’s never been in a position where there might be unavoidable, unpleasant consequences for him. Reading the Wolff book, it’s clear that Trump assumed once he became president, he’d automatically become popular and unassailable. He gets very angry when it’s clear he is neither very popular nor all-powerful, and Wolff describes the lengths the staff goes through to keep Hair Furor from going ballistic on a daily basis.

It seems they have him convinced that the Mueller thing is merely an inconvenience, no big deal, and he goes along with it.

So it appears someone tried to break the Pacific Ocean in Indonesia and Alaska.

I hope everyone is okay there … why is it that people have to jump on Twitter and be the first to spread fear? One single bouy shows a marked increase in height, and I read around that there were as high as 100 metre tsunamis.

(Any number of things can cause a single bouy to go up 33 feet in an earthquake … that’s why NOAA operates more than one bouy.)

Yeah, a single bouy is not necessarily something one should get a wedgie over, it could simply be something like bottom topology or just the right angle wrt. the epicenter.

Anyone know how many Democrats have announced boycotts of the SOTU? I’ll bet Republicans are planning to fill their seats with aides. They should just not show up and explain why after so Trump doesn’t get Standing Os from the Democrat side of the aisle.

If enough Democrats don’t show up, could Republicans overthrow the government live on TV?

It only impacts old AMD chips. If AMD gave them incorrect documentation, they can’t be faulted for not testing the fix on old PCs. You can only have so many machines in your test area. They can be faulted for not rolling it out in waves if they released it to everyone at once.

Fixing the blame fairly is all well and good. My perspective is more about fixing the problem. I happen to run Intel on an Asus, but AMD is in a lot of machines out there. I guess we are the beta test as this moves along. The most recent bios for my main pc at home is last September so far. Per below I think I’ll not be an early adopter of the next flash bios update. Can’t depend on the browser patches either.

Intel tells users to stop deploying buggy Spectre patch, citing technical issues

More problems from the massive processor vulnerability

Intel has a patching problem. All last week, users reported computers spontaneously rebooting after installing Intel’s Spectre/Meltdown patch. Now, Intel seems to be giving up on those patches entirely. In a post today, executive vice president Navin Shenoy announced that Intel had located the source of some of the recent reboot problems and is recommending users skip the patches entirely until a better version could be deployed.

There are implications here way beyond consumer grumbles. There will always be lots of older computers hooked up to broadband. Vulnerable VPN’s. There is a cyber war on. Skirmishes so far. It would pay to get better at this.

Oh I appreciated the technical aspects of it. But plot wise? It didn’t do it for me.

It did way more than push how movies are made. That movie pushed “red-pill/blue-pill” into our culture. The matrix as control, and our sucky world being the only thing we’re content with, have both become themes used in conversation.

Now, I will say that there’s only one Matrix movie…no others exist.

There is a tale from the earliest days of moving pictures in theaters. A scene of a train heading right at the audience in the theater. People jumped up as if to run. Sounds silly right? I think every big visual (or audio) jump in the look gets that ONE moment.

Targetpractice  Jan 23, 2018 • 8:25:00am

The Matrix was groundbreaking largely in that it brought a lot of then-new film-making techniques together with a pretty familiar story: The “real world” is all an illusion, sentiment machines at war with humanity, a messiah-like character, etc. For the time it was amazing, but as time’s passed most of the effects have become dated and overused. So you’re left with a story which, while it may make you think, wasn’t really the big draw for everyone.

True: I first heard that story when I took some film classes at USC back in the hand-cranked/silent film era* : supposedly it happened at the Lumiere Bros.’ first public showing of projected “films” in 1895. The “jump” back then was the “projected” part: people (well some, mainly urban folks) were semi-used to “moving pictures”, although they were typically penny-arcade attractions, coin-operated viewers. the Lumieres, IIRC, weren’t the first to come up with the idea of projecting the images on a “big screen”, but were the first to do it for a paying audience.

* (sarcasm) It was 1972. Though I do recall using the old brass hand-cranked (?) Mutoscope (?) viewers when I was a kid in the late ’50s. Some old-fashioned technology is pretty durable. Now get off my lawn!

I think there are roles that are waiting for actors. Ever since I saw Sutherland in Flatliners, I picture him as the guy who doesn’t really give a shit about other people. And that’s how I see Constantine. He does the right thing, but not because he really cares about people.

Another role I think was waiting for an actor was Karl Urban as McCoy in the Star Trek movies. I think most of the other actors are OK, but he is McCoy, and filled in DeForest Kelley’s shoes quite well.

It was, there was less time wasted on philosophical rambling and building up the main character as a messiah and more time on investigating the mystery. True, the mystery ended up being a bit hackneyed, but it was forgivable because it fit the story’s tone rather than a deus ex machina ass-pull at the end.

Dark City and Thirteenth Floor were traditional film noir and so relied heavily upon mystery. In The Matrix, the mystery is pretty well gone within the first 30 minutes of the movie: Neo is “The One” and the rest of the film is about proving that. Matrix is just the better known one because it was an action film that brought a lot of (then) cutting-edge effects to the big screen.

UK Regulators: Fox’s Sky Merger Would Give Murdoch Too Much Media Control

LONDON (AP) — British regulators say 21st Century Fox’s takeover of London-based broadcaster Sky is not in the public interest because it would give Rupert Murdoch and his family too much control over the country’s news media.

But the regulators offered potential solutions to their objections, including the spin-off of Sky News or “behavioral remedies” that would reduce the Murdoch family’s ability to direct Sky’s news coverage.

But Robert Rodriguez is a director I trust to do good work.

Yeah, Rodriguez is a solid director. I know James Cameron was kicking around a live-action Battle Angel Alita for years and years - but now he’s doing the Avatar sequels. Rodriguez is a good choice.

Sadly, though I think we’ll never see these films, I’d love to: David Fincher’s Rendezvous with Rama and Guillermo Del Toro’s At the Mountains of Madness. Those two films have been stuck in development hell for at least a decade or so.

Yeah, I’d been nursing a grudge for years over Cameron announcing that he was shelving Alita because he’d signed a contract for several Avatar sequels. It wasn’t just that he’d been promising that he’d be making the film for years, but that he’d also said the entire reason for making Avatar was to develop the technology necessary to make Alita. It’s like a video game developer promising a major sequel to a popular franchise, then putting it aside to make easier cash on updates to existing games (I’m lookin’ at you, Valve!).

Tom Cole pretty much gave away the game plan today:

The congressman then bashed the bipartisan group of senators who tried to reach a compromise on immigrants under Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, saying House lawmakers should have been invited to participate.

“The issue there was, in my view, you should haven’t tried to end run the process,” Cole said. “We had senators coming in with what they thought was a deal, but it wasn’t an acceptable deal to the standpoint of the president, it would have never gotten through the House. Let’s go back and put everybody at the negotiating table that has to sign off on this thing, not just a group of senators. I’m sorry, the Constitution demands it get through the House and demands the president sign it. So if those people are not at the table, your chances of getting a deal go down.”

What I expect to happen is the House GOP will first make a lot of noise about how there’s no existing deal and the negotiations have to start back at square one if the DNC wants a deal that all sides agree to. When the DNC balks and says they already have a bipartisan bill, the House GOP will declare their refusal to consider it and ram through their own bill (“Securing America’s Future” Act) on a party line vote and seek Trump’s blessing because will “secure the border” while ending “chain migration.” At which time McConnell will say that the terms of his agreement have been met, a DACA bill is on the Senate’s plate and the Senate Dems take-it-or-leave-it.

OK: not to take away from the indubitable fact that there has to be SOMETHING hinky going on with painkiller distribution in Floyd Cty, KY, that figure of “477 pills per person” is slightly misleading, as that seems to be over a seven-year period (2010-16): or 68 pills per person per year. Still seems off, though.

Our former sheriff arrested the doctor in our county who was handing out the pills. The doctor was successfully prosecuted and sent to prison. Our current sheriff is continuing the work by going after the local dealers. Addicts are offered the opportunity for treatment.

For years I have been in favor of sending Pharmaceutical CEOs to prison. They deliberately created this crisis; doctors are usually useless in understanding the effects of medication; they rely on lying pharmaceutical reps. Unless people at the top of these firms suffer real financial and personal consequences for their depravity, it will continue. I’m in favor of sending them to prison for life, just like a member of the drug cartels, and stripping their families of all assets

I still would say I disapprove of Bush though if I asked. I may find him less repugnant as a person than Trump but he was still a bad president. Trump hasn’t changed taht for me.

I’m part depressed, part optimistic. Depressed because there’s a part of this country that sucks and I can’t see getting any better but optimistic too because there’s a lot of this country that doesn’t suck. Trumpism has made the right, already obnoxious and vile even worse and I just don’t see anyway that gets better.

352
Targetpractice  Jan 23, 2018 • 10:33:13am

Consider the events of the past week. Dubya might have similar thoughts to Trump on where immigrants are coming from, but he never voiced them aloud in the middle of a meeting on immigration reform. And he wanted immigration reform, without a massive wall built to honor his ego or policies that would break up families. Nor would he have unilaterally axed DACA without first having some alternative on the table, simply to spite the legacy of the guy he felt he’s “better” than.

In China, they execute them. And televise it.

Still seems off, though.

here’s a take from electoral-vote.com

- Ex-presidents are no longer on the front line of tough, emotionally-fraught political battles
- Ex-presidents can pick their spots, like denouncing white supremacists (as Obama and Bush both did)
- The issues that hurt the exes start to fade in memory—there can’t be much anger left about, say, Valerie Plame
- After leaving the White House, personality starts to loom much larger, and most presidents not named Nixon are basically pretty likable fellows…

Of course, in addition to all of these things, the rising popularity of these two exes is also a repudiation of Donald Trump

I don’t think the Bannonites had much to do with the Russia scam, however. Its the Trumps and the Kushners, with their long history of money laundering for Russian mobsters and oligarchs, who have the most to fear. The story is 2 weeks old; the patch was pulled shortly after the flaw was discovered. It only affected very old CPUs.
Although Microsoft blamed AMD’s documentation, the fault for this mess up is clearly Microsoft’s. They’re a 600 Billion dollar software company; their QA department should be able to sanity test every CPU capable of running Windows.

I mean….that said, I think we overestimate how much he’s actually being manipulated into evil. A lot of it doesn’t seem to take much actual pushing. A lot is just him surrounding himself with people who will tell him what he’s already convinced himself on.

Well for example, Trump knows less than zero about healthcare and would’ve signed anything Congress would’ve passed even if it broke all of his promises because he just didn’t care. He would’ve been happy to sign a Medicare for all bill; all he wanted was a signing ceremony so he could “win.”

My biggest hope here though is that lack of focus and unity to reach a goal. They have no real plan, it’s more about breaking things. You can only loot and plunder so much before there’s blowback. I’m under no illusions that this will be easy and that no one will get hurt. The Nazis have made strides towards seeming normalcy. Our job is to keep making sure they don’t get to sweep who they are under the rug.

I don’t see much more legislation passing. The big problems are that the agencies are being run by ideologues dedicated to evil, a bunch of extreme rightwingers are getting judicial appointments that will last for decades, and Trump doesn’t have a fucking clue about what he is doing in the global arena, so he could easily stumble into a war.

My mother had open heart surgery a few years ago. One of the complications was that the anesthesia wiped her short term memory. She would wake up, panicked about why she was in the hospital. The doctors said it was a very uncommon reaction to the particular anesthesia she was on.

“…The move punishes Samsung, which recently began washer production in South Carolina, and LG, which is building a washer factory in Tennessee.

“This tariff is a tax on every consumer who wants to buy a washing machine. Everyone will pay more, with fewer choices,” Samsung said in a statement.

LG Electronics said that the decision will hinder the ramp-up and employment prospects of its new plant, which will not begin production until late 2018 or early 2019.

Trump ignored a recommendation from the ITC to exclude South Korean-produced washers from LG from the tariffs, as prior anti-dumping duties on these machines have been dropped. The decision could also hurt retailer Sears Holdings, whose Kenmore brand sources its larger washers from LG’s overseas factories.

About the only thing a lot of countries in the region seem to agree on is that the Kurdish people should not have their own state (Syria, Turkey, Iran, and Iraq all have an interest in preventing that - they lose territory and oil revenue)

JJ Watt is up for the Walter Payton Man of the Year award even though he didn’t play this year due to injury. Kaepernick currently has a claim against the NFL for blackballing him, that’s going to draw a whole hell of a lot more attention.
