I suspect Trump would be more than happy to leave the WTO, so the America can be great again by gouging every other country’s exports to the USA.
He obviously does not understand that making imported goods more expensive to buy does not automatically create the capacity to make those goods domestically. US companies shuttered factories in the States long ago and moved production offshore. They can’t now flick a switch and reopen those plants at his beck and call.
China will be especially pissed, since American consumption of Chinese-made products is a huge boon to China’s economy.

Trump as well. He’s never been in a position where there might be unavoidable, unpleasant consequences for him. Reading the Wolff book, it’s clear that Trump assumed once he became president, he’d automatically become popular and unassailable. He gets very angry when it’s clear he is neither very popular nor all-powerful, and Wolff describes the lengths the staff goes through to keep Hair Furor from going ballistic on a daily basis.

Intel has a patching problem. All last week, users reported computers spontaneously rebooting after installing Intel’s Spectre/Meltdown patch. Now, Intel seems to be giving up on those patches entirely. In a post today, executive vice president Navin Shenoy announced that Intel had located the source of some of the recent reboot problems and is recommending users skip the patches entirely until a better version could be deployed.
There are implications here way beyond consumer grumbles. There will always be lots of older computers hooked up to broadband. Vulnerable VPN’s. There is a cyber war on. Skirmishes so far. It would pay to get better at this.

I believe they also thought people dying on screen were actually dying. Man that was such a different time period.
The Matrix was groundbreaking largely in that it brought a lot of then-new film-making techniques together with a pretty familiar story: The “real world” is all an illusion, sentiment machines at war with humanity, a messiah-like character, etc. For the time it was amazing, but as time’s passed most of the effects have become dated and overused. So you’re left with a story which, while it may make you think, wasn’t really the big draw for everyone.

There is a tale from the earliest days of moving pictures in theaters. A scene of a train heading right at the audience in the theater. People jumped up as if to run. Sounds silly right? I think every big visual (or audio) jump in the look gets that ONE moment.
True: I first heard that story when I took some film classes at USC back in the hand-cranked/silent film era* : supposedly it happened at the Lumiere Bros.’ first public showing of projected “films” in 1895. The “jump” back then was the “projected” part: people (well some, mainly urban folks) were semi-used to “moving pictures”, although they were typically penny-arcade attractions, coin-operated viewers. the Lumieres, IIRC, weren’t the first to come up with the idea of projecting the images on a “big screen”, but were the first to do it for a paying audience.
* (sarcasm) It was 1972. Though I do recall using the old brass hand-cranked (?) Mutoscope (?) viewers when I was a kid in the late ’50s. Some old-fashioned technology is pretty durable. Now get off my lawn!

I think there are roles that are waiting for actors. Ever since I saw Sutherland in Flatliners, I picture him as the guy who doesn’t really give a shit about other people. And that’s how I see Constantine. He does the right thing, but not because he really cares about people.
Another role I think was waiting for an actor was Karl Urban as McCoy in the Star Trek movies. I think most of the other actors are OK, but he is McCoy, and filled in DeForest Kelley’s shoes quite well.
Two people close to the WH told me this AM Trump was “absolutely fuming” because Sessions didn’t report back in detail on how his interview went with Mueller’s team. Apparently Trump was “begging” Sessions to tell him what questions were asked & Sessions wouldn’t tell him much.

My 720p DLP projector failed Sunday, so I bought this one with one day delivery for under $700. It runs at 120 and 144hz, so the DLP rainbow effect is hard to detect. It has a better picture than my $1,200 Panasonic LCD projector and is so bright that it even looks pretty good with the lights on.

Dropped a wadded up old grocery list for her to play with (why do we buy cat toys?) and for the last hour she has been bringing it back to me, first dropping it in my lap, now got her putting it my hand, to throw for her to play with then bring back. If I try to ignore her she meows insistently. I think she’s part Labrador Retriever.

The twist at the end of the Thirteenth Floor was almost the plot of the Matrix, which I personally liked exploring.
No point in arguing movies, though. It’s a bit like arguing over music.
I’m just in the camp that there are certain movies you have to see. It’s a bit like discussing Western culture without knowing the Bible.

Dark City and Thirteenth Floor were traditional film noir and so relied heavily upon mystery. In The Matrix, the mystery is pretty well gone within the first 30 minutes of the movie: Neo is “The One” and the rest of the film is about proving that. Matrix is just the better known one because it was an action film that brought a lot of (then) cutting-edge effects to the big screen.

If I try to ignore her she meows insistently. I think she’s part Labrador Retriever.
My cat Bean plays fetch, too! He makes me laugh because he looks like he’s bringing that wadded-up paper with such purpose.
I never had a cat who played fetch before, although a couple of friends tell me that they’ve had cats who did. I think it’s pretty much the funniest thing in the world. My dog doesn’t even fetch.

Yeah, I’d been nursing a grudge for years over Cameron announcing that he was shelving Alita because he’d signed a contract for several Avatar sequels. It wasn’t just that he’d been promising that he’d be making the film for years, but that he’d also said the entire reason for making Avatar was to develop the technology necessary to make Alita. It’s like a video game developer promising a major sequel to a popular franchise, then putting it aside to make easier cash on updates to existing games (I’m lookin’ at you, Valve!).

Tom Cole pretty much gave away the game plan today:

“The issue there was, in my view, you should haven’t tried to end run the process,” Cole said. “We had senators coming in with what they thought was a deal, but it wasn’t an acceptable deal to the standpoint of the president, it would have never gotten through the House. Let’s go back and put everybody at the negotiating table that has to sign off on this thing, not just a group of senators. I’m sorry, the Constitution demands it get through the House and demands the president sign it. So if those people are not at the table, your chances of getting a deal go down.”
What I expect to happen is the House GOP will first make a lot of noise about how there’s no existing deal and the negotiations have to start back at square one if the DNC wants a deal that all sides agree to. When the DNC balks and says they already have a bipartisan bill, the House GOP will declare their refusal to consider it and ram through their own bill (“Securing America’s Future” Act) on a party line vote and seek Trump’s blessing because will “secure the border” while ending “chain migration.” At which time McConnell will say that the terms of his agreement have been met, a DACA bill is on the Senate’s plate and the Senate Dems take-it-or-leave-it.

Our former sheriff arrested the doctor in our county who was handing out the pills. The doctor was successfully prosecuted and sent to prison. Our current sheriff is continuing the work by going after the local dealers. Addicts are offered the opportunity for treatment.
It’s good to know our Ky AG is now going after the big distributors.

I used to say that Cheeto Benito, horrible as he is, still hadn’t achieved Bushian body counts (Katrina, Iraq War). Well…Puerto Rico takes care of the former, and the latter…I don’t even want to think about that lest I depress myself even further.
I’m part depressed, part optimistic. Depressed because there’s a part of this country that sucks and I can’t see getting any better but optimistic too because there’s a lot of this country that doesn’t suck. Trumpism has made the right, already obnoxious and vile even worse and I just don’t see anyway that gets better.
Consider the events of the past week. Dubya might have similar thoughts to Trump on where immigrants are coming from, but he never voiced them aloud in the middle of a meeting on immigration reform. And he wanted immigration reform, without a massive wall built to honor his ego or policies that would break up families. Nor would he have unilaterally axed DACA without first having some alternative on the table, simply to spite the legacy of the guy he felt he’s “better” than.
