Right Wing #SecretSociety Conspiracy Theory Collapses Spectacularly

Politics • Views: 43,956

The entire right wing universe began shrieking in unison (they always shriek in unison) a couple of days ago on reports that an FBI agent had referenced a “secret society” in a text message.

It was evidence of the DEEP STATE! A conspiracy to harm DEAR LEADER DONNIE! Possibly involving the ILLUMINATI! Heads must roll! People must be imprisoned! #ReleaseTheMemo!

But, uh, it was a lame joke.

We can now expect @JackPosobiec, Creepy Mike @Cernovich, and the Stupidest Man on the Internet (@gatewaypundit) to issue retractions for their conspiracy-mongering, right?

I know they won’t! That was another lame joke.

The new civil war will not be Democrats vs. Republicans or liberal vs. conservative or other such quaint categories. It will be between those who value facts and logic and those who don’t. It is helpful that the latter have worked so assiduously to line themselves up on the same side politically but that is not the essence of the conflict.
This is why such wholly incompatible notions as Randian economics and Christian fundamentalism, libertarian drug culture and authoritarian police statism, imperialism and isolationism, conspiracism and censorship, all find themselves as defacto allies. The reality based community is their mutual enemy.

Hey, that apex predator worked hard to get where he is. Nothing was given to him. The other species never were willing to put in the effort or lacked the necessities for success. Asked Wednesday whether he believes there’s a “secret society” inside the FBI to take down the president, the chairman of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wisc., said, “That’s Strzok and Page’s term.”

“Everything I take with a grain of salt,” he added. “[But] I’ve heard from an individual that … there was a group of managers within the FBI that were holding meetings off site.”

The amount of money being thrown around that night, and the hostesses earned a measly £150, for hours of groping, leering, etc - and had to sign a 5 page NDA, unread and no copy provided.

Several politicians named in the article and the fallout is already huge.

They have to find the one to put it over the top. The GOP has no problem letting members in vulnerable seats appear to do the right thing just as long as their vote is meaningless. The GOP has been doing this for decades.

Normally I have trouble getting to the Financial Times site, but they must have lifted whatever they use to keep out the rabble because I got in with no problem this morning. And the story, OMG! Here “the powers that be” would be screaming about “they signed a NDA” and not caring about the fact the women didn’t really get a chance to read it, much less a copy.

At least in Britain, the powers that be can still be embarrassed. Sometimes.

I know women who are not famous who are just as racist and dishonest as Laura or Tomi. If you avoid political topics, they are perfectly fine; unfortunately you have to avoid Trump to prevent a serious disruption to your relationship. They will follow anything the GOP tell them and have abdicated any responsibility for independent analysis.

Lubbock Police Respond to Reports of Man With a Gun Near Elementary School
3 cuffed but no arrests, all clear sounded pretty quickly. My guess is an open carry nut.

Perhaps not coincidentally, there were 3 fatal shootings in Lubbock Saturday, in 3 apparently unrelated incidents. One victim was killed in what police described as a “domestic violence” incident. No arrest and no one being sought. My guess in this one is that his wife/girlfriend shot him in self-defense. Another was killed in what started as a bar fight. The third was a 16 year old boy who was found in the street after a “shots fired” report.

It occurred to me that a proportionate number of fatal shooting incidents in Chicago in one day (about 40) would be the sold subject of right wing media and racist internet posters for days, perhaps weeks.

Someday, when Trump’s out of office, I want someone to make a fake History Textbook of the Future — “American History: Red, White & Bold,” Vol. 5, covering, let’s say, the 1970s to 2020.

Most of it would be straightforward history, copied out of a junior high textbook. But the end of it would be Trump, and it’d basically say history records Trump as widely despised throughout the country and the world, cheated his way into the White House, thanks to the Russians, the most corrupt administration ever, the stupidest, most childish, most incompetent, and least virile president in history.

Have someone in a silver jumpsuit walk up to him, tell him they’re from the year 8621, and they want him to read the new elementary school textbook. Because he’d believe a time traveler gave him a textbook from the future, and that’ll be the only way he’ll ever really understand what everyone actually thinks of him.

I’d put this together myself, but I’m too busy playing video games.

I always thought he was a creepy-looking fucker (he reminded me of the Odo character from Star Trek Deep Space Nine, but without the good qualities)

I also remember what a nasty, GOPer-esque smear campaign he ran against his opponent Christine Elliott in the leadership race. Serves his party right for rejecting a seemingly nice, moderate woman only to be saddled with a misogynistic sleazoid at the worst possible time :P

Of course there’s no sense of shame for the gun industry about holding a gun show in that location, but I wonder what the attendance numbers are compared to other years. Is it still fewer gun nuts buying larger quantities of stuff? Does attendance for these things stay pretty steady? Seems like Las Vegas might still have some negative vibes for non-fetishists - but then I don’t even know the difference between a clip and a magazine.

The tantric technique for making sex last 5 hours:

3) wait for the shock to wear off
4) start having sex again
5) say “I was Barney”

Sorry to be late to the party. My thoughts on the discussion on previous thread.

In 2016 Professor Snyder, a historian at Yale identified several warning signs to be on the watch for. Here are a few:

- the gradual, almost subversive, transformation to a one party system;

- the de-monopolization of violence as the government begins to support paramilitary groups that are outside the government;

- the creation of a “politics of emergency” that allows actors to gain legitimacy by claiming to react against the nonexistent emergency;

- the “suspension of the state” that is often done by declaring a state of emergency;

Sorry for the FUD. (Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt) But looking at the list, so far we seem to have, very luckily, dodged things. So far. I think.

Regarding paramilitaries…

The talks last year between the administration and Eric Prince (founder of Blackwater and brother of Betsy DeVos) had the hair on the back of my neck standing up.

While the coverage by JJMacNab on the Bundy’s, Sovereign Citizens and various Militias fills me with concern. SO far, they seem to be contained.

The other thing I am watching is how the Mueller investigation and the upcoming 2018 elections are affecting the Trumpkins.

With all the folk complaining about Sen. Schumer “caving” on the issue of DACA, this sort of thing promoted by the right would be the very thing to paint Democrats as “not caring about the troops.”

In the all-or-nothing thinking of conservatives, and a fair amount of others, that message would be the one that got amplified in the media.

It’s really crappy the way the GOP has painted this as an either-or position, when it can be a “both” position. There is a reason conservative politics so often is used to divide groups one against another.

For myself (and those of my family), we would all be willing to go without to get the DACA issue fixed (which Trump created). But the majority of the American public? I’m not so sure about that, when the GOP trots out every day another Gold Star wife or child claiming the Dems don’t care about us.

Chuck Schumer has been a politician a long time; he knows what he is doing. It is optics like this he is trying to avoid while still getting what is needed done. For all the complaints from the right, the shutdown discussions were a net gain for the Democrats.

135
ckkatz  Jan 24, 2018 • 10:25:40pm

re: #134 Anymouse 🌹

I agree that Schumer is an experienced politician and senator. He is actually trying to get votes to legalize DACA. That requires Republicans voting for it. As opposed to McConnell, when he was in the minority, who was fine with simply shutting everything down.

It sounds like there is some possibliity that he may get the votes for DACA. And is close to the votes for Net Neutrality.

And, of course, he seems to have freed CHIP from being a hostage.

I hope that his acting as adult in the room continues to bear fruit.

Several people at my water class in Alliance yesterday, during breaks (since my car was parked right in front of the building) pointed out the license plate on the front and asked “what is that?” (It is a Gold Star Family plate, which in Nebraska has a unique design, similar to the Gold Star service banner.)

Pretty much everyone who saw it asked about it, and Nebraska has only had them now for six years.

(To be fair to the people at the water class, it seems everyone in this state who sees our car and doesn’t already know us asks [a] what kind of car is that, and [b] what is that license plate for.)

all these “this shocking revelation will surely kill the mueller investigation once and fer all” bubbles remind me of a remark i read in a book on wwi about how a giant initiative designed to deal a final mortal blow to the enemy are a sure and certain sign of the desperation of a general who knows he’s losing

At the very end of WWII, as their cities were being bombed to rubble, the freezing and starving Nazi faithful desperately babbled about “Der Fuhrer’s Secret Weapons” that he was about to haul out that would totally turn the tide of the war and smash the Americans and Russians and Brits and French into submission.

Magical thinking. The act of people who are feeling increasingly cornered by undeniable reality. The aftermath of that in the U.S. was the “Lost Cause” bullshit after the traitors were beaten in the Civil War. The only reason it didn’t really spread throughout Germany after WWII is that the Soviets put their boot down on the throats of the Germans, and anyone even muttering anything that sounded like “Germany will rise again” would have gotten a bullet in the head.

Over on the Allied side? They got trials and the rope.

Tide Pod sales are getting more palatable:

All the signs point to a possible sales crisis: Tide dropped to its lowest consumer perception level in nine months after the first viral videos - which encourage people to bite into the dishwasher capsules - began catching on at the end of last November. And Tide’s word of mouth is the highest it’s been in more than three years: 13% of adults 18 and over have talked about the detergent with family and friends over the past two weeks.
However, consumer purchase consideration of Tide has been going straight up since the beginning of 2018. On December 31, 38% of consumers would consider buying Tide the next time they were shopping for household or personal care items. That number grew three percentage points to its current 41% - an unexpected turn considering the harsh publicity that has surrounded the controversy.

Rude Pundit on super-duper-mega-conspiracy theories:

There is a simple number for figuring out exactly how batshit a conspiracy theory is: how many people would have to be in on it? If a conspiracy requires an extraordinary number of conspirators, including people who acted on it, as well as anyone tangentially involved, then chances are that there is no fucking way it’s real. That’s why I could never jump on the 9/11 “truth” bandwagon. You know how many people would be required to pull that off? Fuck that noise.

People wanna brag about shit they think they’re getting away with. That’s one reason that the investigation led by Robert Mueller into whatever the fuck was going on between Donald Trump, his company, his campaign, and Russia has gotten as far as it has. Dumb motherfuckers talk, whether it was George Papadopoulos or Donald Trump, Jr. or Michael Flynn or, shit, Trump himself. More and more, it’s becoming clear that something is going to come from the Mueller probe or they wouldn’t be interviewing people like the Attorney General and, at some point, the president. I think it’s going to be more about laundering filthy Russian oligarch money than any kind of “collusion” or cooperation between the Russian government and the Trump campaign.

A big conclusion to all this is in the air, and so the squirrely motherfuckers on the right who wanna protect their leader, even if it’s from treason, are coming up with a meta-conspiracy to explain why it seems that Trump is involved in some kind of conspiracy. And, depending on which conservative spoogebucket you listen to, they are getting bigger and nuttier.

It all comes down to the hot bugaboo for conspiracy theorists, the “Deep State,” which used to mean the military industrial complex, that is, the actual military, intelligence services, and corporations that depend on the military, manipulating national and world events to their benefit, elected leaders be damned. Or something else. Honestly, I’ve tried to find a real definition, and I found about a dozen.

In the age of Trump, because everything is reduced to its stupidest version, it seems to mean “anyone who works in government who won’t lick Trump’s feet.” You believe in climate change? That’s Deep State. The EPA issues a press release with an anti-Trump quote? Deep State, motherfuckers. Congress won’t do the 1000th investigation of Hillary Clinton’s emails? Deep fuckin’ State.

I grew up in Gary, Indiana. I remember visitors asking me “What’s that smell?” to which I would reply “What smell?” and when then asked why the sky was that color, simply asked “Is the sky supposed to have a color?”

I remember the Calumet river catching fire (as the Cuyahoga river in Cleveland also used to) and playing hide-and-seek among thirty-foot-high piles of grayish industrial sludge out behind the Purex bleach plant.

Yes, I recall reading about the Aurora Borealis and looking out to see the sky glowing and thinking that I was seeing it: but just meant that they were opening up the blast furnaces.

I did not see real Aurora until last spring in Finland.

And that’s really the angle Nunes is going for here: Release the “memo” sans the underlying intel, so that the public can’t know that it’s all horseshit because any inquiries to see the evidence will be bounced back with “That’s highly classified!”

But certainly people, the media, even Fox News would recognize this memo was written by Republicans, or by one Republican in particular, and wouldn’t just accept its claims at face value, they would demand more right? They would know to distrust an obviously biased, partisan account with no supporting information, right?

These are rhetorical questions.

Greets and saluts from the Deep State Resistance in the NYC metro area. I hope everyone has gotten their resistance checks, and W2s, because we want to make sure that everyone’s properly compensated for their role in thwarting Trump’s corrupt cabal of cronies from running roughshod over the Constitution.

But I digress. There are still national emergencies that need attending to, and Trump’s over in Davos getting ignored by the world leaders because he’s a reactionary ignoramus who doesn’t understand how economics works or how globalization helps the US far more than it hurts. Trump’s reactionary and isolationist policies are doing tremendous damage to US economic and strategic interests over the long term.

Of course, Trump’s depraved indifference to the plight of Americans is on my mind as well.

Hurricane Maria hit four months ago. 18% of Puerto Rico still lacks power.

Trump thinks this is okay and doesn’t care there’s such a slow response to rebuilding the grid and getting services back up and running. It’s been up to states like NY to send needed resources to help get the grid up and running. Trump, who is commander in chief of the most powerful military, has ignored the plight and delayed sending resources to Puerto Rico (and the US Virgin Islands) leading to more misery and harm to American citizens.

This is basic stuff. Trump’s response to the hurricanes is the new nadir in how any elected official should respond to a natural disaster. It’s worse than Bush in the aftermath of Katrina (and many of Trump’s idiot supporters think Obama is to blame for something that happened years before Obama took office).

We are supposed to learn from our mistakes, but Trump doesn’t learn. That much has been clear throughout his spectacularly awful history.

I broke my commitment to not watch Megyn Kelly this morning to watch three of the young ladies from the Nassar abuses.

They were the first one to come forward and stick to her story and break the whole thing open (brave girl!), the young lady that has been seen on TV with the curly hair that ripped him pretty good in her statement (why she was covered on TV) and the lady that was family friends with the Nassar’s and was abused by him starting at the age of 6. She was the one her father wouldn’t believe for years.

All I can say is there are a lot of people that should be in jail, not just Nassar. Systemically these young ladies were abused by all in charge. They were ignored, bullied and called liars while the adults all protected themselves leaving Nassar to continue.

Michigan State really does need to get a death penalty on their programs and their entire board needs to resign. They really do seem to be ground zero for how all of it started and went on for so long.

I still don’t like Megyn, but it was a good segment and so tragic.

Mark E. Smith of The Fall has passed away as well.

Mark E Smith, the irascible frontman of Manchester post-punk band the Fall, has died at the age of 60.

Smith formed the Fall in 1976 in Prestwich and was the only constant member of the band. He was known for his tempestuous relationship with his bandmates, and frequently fired them - there have been 66 different members over the years, with a third of them lasting less than a year. Smith famously once said: “If it’s me and yer granny on bongos, it’s The Fall.”

He was a famously prolific musician. Last year the Fall released their 32nd studio album, New Facts Emerge, and had been fitfully touring in recent months when Smith’s health would allow. The band played London’s 100 Club in July, while Smith performed from a wheelchair in Wakefield in October.

I loved that cranky bastard.

Physicists are planning to build lasers so powerful they could rip apart empty space, what could go wrong?

Inside a cramped laboratory in Shanghai, China, physicist Ruxin Li and colleagues are breaking records with the most powerful pulses of light the world has ever seen. At the heart of their laser, called the Shanghai Superintense Ultrafast Laser Facility (SULF), is a single cylinder of titanium-doped sapphire about the width of a Frisbee. After kindling light in the crystal and shunting it through a system of lenses and mirrors, the SULF distills it into pulses of mind-boggling power. In 2016, it achieved an unprecedented 5.3 million billion watts, or petawatts (PW). The lights in Shanghai do not dim each time the laser fires, however. Although the pulses are extraordinarily powerful, they are also infinitesimally brief, lasting less than a trillionth of a second. The researchers are now upgrading their laser and hope to beat their own record by the end of this year with a 10-PW shot, which would pack more than 1000 times the power of all the world’s electrical grids combined.

Matt Gaetz is the newest punchable face in the GOP. He has been on a fast rise since just getting elected in November. He came out all mouth from the get-go.

As I got at, he’s part of why I have no optimism at all for the young conservatives of my generation.

Was up early this morning for a flight and during liftoff had no internet access. Which meant I listened to Bach on my phone and watched videos of my kids. I thank God I live in this time and place. Thank God for modernity, for Western civilization, and for America.

I find nothing particularly offensive in that post. There are a lot of things I find to be thankful for about Western Civilization: Bach’s music and a tradition of personal freedoms being among them.

But I am not exceptionalist enough to believe that Western Civilization has given us only good things or that other non-Western Civilizations have contributed nothing of value to humankind.

I don’t get this conservative thing of trying to hold back the world from advancing.

Oh wait…their buddies have businesses that are nothing but old tech and they need to use all that up before changing.

re: #330 Interesting Times

Exactly. I don’t know what it’s going to take for them to realize what a losing strategy this is in a hostile media environment and with an electorate conditioned to respond to sloganeering as opposed to substance:

[Embedded content]

And if you’re going to say, “hostile media won’t let the Dems get a message out even if they had one”, I say, repeat something often enough in as many contexts as possible and eventually it’ll sink in.

r’s want a few things - no abortions, guns, always lower taxes, shrink government - they never campaign on “the need for infrastructure”

d’s want to do many things because a lot needs to be done - that dilutes the possibility of any single message

i like “liberty and Justice for all

it’s simple and clear, and it parses well

liberty means freedom to mostly do what you want and be left alone
justice means fairness and proportional equity in all things
for all means everyone’s included - we all put in and we all get out

any spin or twisted interpretation to exclude or gain unfair advantage is downright unamerican - it’s the pledge of allegiance after all

you build your policies on and around that

I think we all need to contact Tom Perez at the DNC and our state level Democratic parties and express this very point. Tell them we need better messaging and everyone staying on script for the big points. I don’t necessarily want them acting like Robots as the Republicans do, but pound out a theme everyone can use as a starting point.

1. Hey, remember those algorithm changes at Facebook that was supposed to stop the spread of “fake news.”

Standard boilerplate rant number 14:

Facebook is where you find out what your friends had for lunch, where they are hanging out this weekend, for sharing cute kid and funny animal videos, etc…social media.

It is not a reliable place for news items on politics or current events.

I recall my girlfriend showing me an article last summer from her feed: “Australia’s Great Barrier Reef Declared Dead”. And simply reading the story itself showed that the headline was totally misleading: that there had been serious damage to the reef but it was far from “dead”.

Reality is that the GOP is grasping at straws to deflect attention from Trump’s criminality, and their own. At the same time, they’re complicit in the obstruction of justice. In particular, I’m looking at Nunes and Chaffetz, both of whom have played key roles in the misinformation campaign.

re: #398 Backwoods_Sleuth

There’s a couple of points to be made:
1) Arab leaders need to be courageous enough to make peace with Israel;
2) Israeli leaders need to be the same.

Right now, there’s neither. Bibi isn’t interested in peace, and his right wing cabinet is even less so. Palestinians aren’t the only ones would could make a peace deal.

Jordan and Egypt both have lasting peace deals with Israel.

The rest of the region continues to play games re: Israel, even though Israel is less of a threat to them than say Syria or Iran are to their neighbors, or Iraq and Saudi Arabia are to Iran or Yemen, respectively.

The intra-Arab rivalries are far more consequential than the Arab-Israel conflict (and this has long been the case). Israel is the excuse for other regional powers to do nothing. The Cold War exploited the Arab-Israeli conflict to deliver arms to the region.

But now, the real threats are Islamic terror groups that threaten fellow Muslim (IS, Hizbullah, al Qaeda, etc.) and far more regularly kill Muslims than they do anyone else.

[Embedded content- The Trashmen’s excellent “Surfin’ Bird

First time I heard this was when collegue in a workplace played one of the “Born Bad” compilations, which contained this track. Interestingly, it was preceded by the two tracks by The Rivingtons that The Trashmen used to make their track. Essentially, it’s a wigged out medley of The Rivingtons’ “Bird is the Word” and “Papa Ooma Mow Mow”.

Rather bizzarely, quite a few years back, I was searching the net for tunes of individual members of ABBA before they formed the group. They have quite a back history. For example, Benny Andersson (Beard, tunes, keyboard) was previously in a sort of late 60s Swedish version of the Beatles, called the Hep Stars, and I found a bonkers live recording- compete with screaming audience- of the band performing, yep, you guessed it, “Surfin’ Bird”.

A HYPOTHETICAL CASE STUDY

35 year old Dreamer, #DACA expiring Mar 2018. Came to US with parents at age 4. No criminal record. Never left US.

one legal nuance:

they are here illegally

but they committed no crime by coming here as they were well under 18 years old.

The humane thing? Allow them to stay.

The asshole thing? Cite the letter of the law and deport them.

Ladies and gentlemen, the Republican Party in 2018:

In a statement posted to Facebook on Tuesday, [US Senate Republican candidate] Sykes said that he had been asked if he “supports women’s rights.”

“I want to come home to a home cooked dinner every night at six,” Sykes said, referring to demands he makes of his girlfriend. “One that she fixes and one that I expect one day to have daughters learn to fix after they become traditional homemakers and family wives.”

According to Sykes, feminists push an agenda that they “made up to suit their own nasty snake-filled heads.”

I’m not a big fan of McCaskill, but just keep in mind this is the alternative.

ETA: just realized this was his girlfriend he was talking about, if there was justice in this world, he’d be permanently single after this statement.

This is his girlfriend—I think it’s a match made in hell:

(Chanel) Rion’s professional website includes a cartoon promoting the baseless conspiracy theory that Democratic staffer Seth Rich was murdered by Hillary Clinton…

Other cartoons show Clinton in prison garb, portray Muslims as a threat to the United States and depict former FBI Director James Comey, who Trump fired, as a snake. Another cartoon labels U.S. Sen. John McCain of Arizona, who survived years of torture during the Vietnam War, as a traitor because of his vote against a Trump-backed health care bill.
