Kind of old news, but…In which the Rude Pundit compares Trump’s interview with Piers Morgan to a pair of komodo dragons fucking.

Trump is so ready to take credit for shit that was already going on when it comes to the economy. If he were on a relay team and the other three runners built up a huge lead before handing off to Trump, he’s the kind of dickhole who would claim the victory is just because of him. You were fuckin’ lucky you had a head start, you lumpy bitch. The stock market is hitting records because the Obama recovery nearly tripled the value of the Dow Jones. Unemployment is low because it dropped tremendously under Obama. Just because you tossed some parsley on the plate doesn’t mean you cooked the dish.

Welp, he read Miller’s speech off the teleprompter and didn’t have a cerebral event (Drumpf will never have a cerebral event-not enough brain tissue to kill), so it was a grand success! So Presidential!

But it was a cheap meatless pizza; wide, thin, full of cheese and weak sauce. No policy specifics that contained how it would be paid for, a blatant appeal to his base with no real humanity or nuance or pathos in a single solitary phrase.

He phoned it in, and it sucked. What a poor excuse for a leader.

The new banner is a modern typeface, with a big, bold, Soviet looking red star.

As for people from their districts, my Republican representative says he doesn’t represent Democrats, won’t take my calls, and won’t respond to my letters or postcards.

To a conservative such as this woman, I would be a “hero” (a Gold Star Family member and a disabled veteran). She would have been one of the people who ignored me when I was homeless.

Democrats try to represent everyone, even those they disagree with.

Charlie Pierce, not that impressed with ABC’s big get:

There is absolutely no legitimate journalistic reason for ABC to hire an ill-tempered slug who has demonstrated all the intellectual nuance of block of cheese and all the political skill of an andiron. Big Chicken spent half a year being beaten like a washtub by the president* and the other half running out to get the president* a sandwich. His only apparent skills are sucking up and punching down. Tech. Sgt. Geraldine Lovely uploaded an expletive-laden video to Facebook of herself in uniform spouting off about her black female subordinates, who she said regularly give her “attitude” and have no “respect whatsoever.” Her offensive language drew reactions both at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada and across the country as the video went viral.

“I am trying my best to hold my professionalism with them, but good God, they have no … respect whatsoever,” Lovely said in the video. “Every time I talk to them … they are talking down to me.”

“Why is it that every time I encounter my subordinates that are black females they have a giant … attitude?” she asked.

Well, it’s because you’re a racist asshole, Geraldine…

b) Trump’s children would immediately be in court wrangling over whether she gets any sort of divorce settlement.
c) If you’re inclined to irresponsible speculation, if she’s Trump’s handler for foreign agents, they won’t let her divorce him.

I’m guessing she negotiated a lucrative post nup after the election last year that requires her to stick with Trump as long as he’s President or she gets nothing. She hates him but for now they need each other.

Also she’s a racist birther piece of shit so fuck her feelings.

Former Glee Star Mike Salling Dies Awaiting Child Porn Sentencing (goes to Huffington Post), more at the link:

“Glee” star Mark Salling, who faced sentencing in March on child pornography charges, was found dead Tuesday in Los Angeles, his attorney confirmed to HuffPost. He was 35.

“I can confirm that Mark Salling passed away early this morning,” attorney Michael Procter said in a statement. “Mark was a gentle and loving person, a person of great creativity, who was doing his best to atone for some serious mistakes and errors of judgment. He is survived by his mother and father, and his brother. The Salling family appreciates the support they have been receiving and asks for their privacy to be respected.”

A Los Angeles Police Department spokesperson told HuffPost that authorities responded to a reported death in the 11900 block of Big Tujunga Canyon Road at 8:50 a.m. Tuesday, but wouldn’t identify the person. TMZ, citing unnamed law enforcement officials, was first to report Salling’s death as a suicide.

I recall a quote from an old Rolling Stone from around 1990: “Donald Trump proposes that if everyone in the world lends him all their money, he will use it to buy everything they own and lease it back to them.”

That seems to be the core of his new infrastructure plan.

So the population of Saginaw, Michigan has declined by 50% since 1980 and the town went from a Democratic stronghold to being solidly GOP.

What does that tell us about the nature of those who stayed vs those who left?

They are still mainly responding to his rhetoric and his personal style: how many of his policies have actually been implemented to the point that they have any direct influence on their lives to date?

Tax reform is only going to show up in next year’s returns, environmental protection changes are incremental and cumulative and changes in immigration policy will have little effect on mostly white, working-class communities like Saginaw.

Exactly. Honestly, I think they’re delusional. The one guy who is running for Governor says “We have to have borders.” A) No one on the left is proposing getting rid of the border so that’s a logical fallacy and B) It’s not like we didn’t enforce immigration law during Obama’s presidency and C) He acts like he’s okay with legal immigration but ignores that Trump and Miller want to cut that too. These people are for better lack of a word delusional and I don’t know how they’er going to change unless Trump were to take a literal shit on them.

What amazes me is that some of the Trumpers I know can speak well of people who have fled North Korea or Cuba but ignore that the DREAMers have often fled equally tyrannical regimes or impoverished nations. I still contend that their problem with communist regimes such as those two isn’t that they’re authoritarian but rather their economic systems. That is to say if Cuba and North Korea practiced capitalism, they would champion those regimes.

Trump pulled of a major stunt in being in the GOP but selling himself as not part of it, as being opposed to the Washington Establishment Elite, even Republicans.

He knew how much Middle America hated politicians and politics as usual and successfully marketed himself as the anti-politician, which allowed him to get away with gaffes and utterances that would have wrecked any other career politician’s campaign, if not their entire reputation.

He is not a typical politician in that he has no history of public service or policy making.

Since most of Middle America sees politician = bad, then that is a bug plus for him in their eyes.

I see a similar reaction to the AfD, a right-wing populist, nationalist and anti-immigration party that just got 13% of the seats in the German parliament, making it the third-largest party in Germany after the centrist Social Democrats and Christian Democrats.

Their opponents paint them as xenophobic neo-Nazis, their supporters praise them as the new future of Germany and voice of the disenfranchised and those disillusioned with the mainstream parties. But in the end, they are still all almost all rhetoric; they have no history of governance beyond being minority parties at State level.

Oh absolutely. He does have no history of public service and or policy making and you’re right, they did see that as a virtue. You’re right about the populist far right and their appeal. Honestly, I’d love to see an in depth study where these parties have done their best because Brexit was made out to be a populist rejection of “elites” by people as different economically as Trump, Sanders, and Stein but it ignored that the Scottish working class areas favored staying part of the EU. I think a lot of this is a mindset where people refuse to acknowledge the change that has happened in the world. I have old newspapers from Johnstown that talk about the steel mills closing in the mid 70’s. Long before NAFTA, long before Reagan even. Times have changed. These people need to realize that. I think it’s more subtle than that. Dems recognize times change, so it’s adapt or die. Reps want time to stand still and resent change, or anything that makes them change their ways. So they stay and fester.

I think that’s a good way of looking at it too. My mom’s parents left a town like Saginaw(Johnstown, Pa) in the mid 50’s. Grandpa didn’t like his brief time working in the mines and the steel mills so he used his GI Bill education to go to vocational school and trained as a brick mason. And he did that for nearly 40 years or so. My mom didn’t grow up wealthy or even solid middle class but her Dad was doing what he liked doing and he did live to be 79. He was pretty conservative in the non political sense of the word somewhat but in this sense, he was willing to acknowledge change and adapt and for that I respect him for and I know I wouldn’t be here or whom I am without that.

But do not think for a moment that her service and her injuries will bring more than a few Republicans over; no, she will be attacked for being so weak she lost her legs.

Edited: Fixed name. Too many people.

Tammy Baldwin would make a really great running mate for Duckworth though.

I’m guessing she isn’t going to file for divorce.

a) She does care about her public persona, and a divorce from the President would look really bad.
b) Trump’s children would immediately be in court wrangling over whether she gets any sort of divorce settlement.
c) If you’re inclined to irresponsible speculation, if she’s Trump’s handler for foreign agents, they won’t let her divorce him.

Her pre-nup probably contains some pretty harsh conditions, such as she is not allowed to initiate divorce proceedings, or to contest divorce proceedings that are initiated by her husband.

Dems migrate and move to better their lot
Reps wait because it should come to them

It’s a little more complex than that. People don’t want to leave “home”, older people want what they had, younger people think it will happen if they wait it out. Moving somewhere far away from home is a big deal and it takes a lot of gumption to do so for most people. Few have the “Travel, Hell Yeah!” mindset; they don’t have passports, may have never left their own state, even their own county. Those people have an Us v Them mindset because it requires them to do something they don’t want to do - or are mentally incapable of.

Hillary, Obama and others in the private sector set out training programs for people in areas where coal, for example, was the only gig in town. Some people took to it, others just wait for coal to return. Those are the people who love trump. They hear what they want and it requires no major change - uprooting - in or of their own lives.

Wouldn’t matter. And if you out and out said that, they would dig in their heels that much more. Many will die exactly the way they are. Drug addicted because there is nothing else to do. Republicans will starve them from services and people will die from that. You cannot force people to think or to change or to accept the things they are unwilling to change or accept.

So the population of Saginaw, Michigan has declined by 50% since 1980 and the town went from a Democratic stronghold to being solidly GOP.

What does that tell us about the nature of those who stayed vs those who left?

My home town of Gary, Indiana also lost about a third of its population since I left.

And another one goes, another one goes, another one bites the dust!

Dr. Brenda Fitzgerald, director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention resigned from her position on Wednesday. The move comes one day after POLITICO reported Fitzgerald’s purchase of tobacco stock after she assumed the position of the nation’s public health agency. Such an investment is an obvious conflict with the mission of the CDC.

HHS released a statement noting the resignation was accepted Wednesday morning.
“Dr. Fitzgerald owns certain complex financial interests that have imposed a broad recusal limiting her ability to complete all of her duties as the CDC Director. Due to the nature of these financial interests, Dr. Fitzgerald could not divest from them in a definitive time period,” the statement said.

The stores used to be filled with customers—Sears, Penney’s, Ward’s, Murphy’s. Now they are all gone, the once bustling Merchant Street is abandoned, storefronts with broken windows, theaters just lying in ruins.

But when the mills closed Richard Mellon Scaife financed a right wing Episcopal seminary which has effectively turned the town into Jesusland.

As we’ve suspected, there was apparently coordination between the White House and Nunes on his memo. And that’s why it probably won’t be released - people in the White House could be exposed to charges of leaking classified information.

You can bet that if any legal jeopardy would fall on Nunes alone, they’d put it out in a New York minute. Fuck him, he’s just a patsy. But White House staff? Trump’s not going to jeopardize his own minions.

I really do not think career politician and Washington insider worked against Hillary as much as just outright hatred for her.

Very true. We should not think for a moment that anyone’s qualifications or history would be difficult for FOX attack ads. Cult media just turned a single text about finding a place to hook up into a conspiracy that is about to precipitate a constitutional crisis.

That’s the reality of 2020, and even 2018. Something on the order of 65-66 million people are going to vote for fascists and Nazis because they will believe that the Democrat is a space alien who eats babies. The only question is whether enough people are going to vote in the right places on the other side.

A lot of DT’s appeal was with people who reject Washington “insider politics as usual”, which is why DT was able to pretty much do or say anything because doing so made him the epitome of the “anti-politician”.

I hear what you’re saying but at the same time, they voted to return their Republicans to Congress too. Ron Johnson in fact got a higher percentage of the vote in Wisconsin than Trump did. For some of them? Absolutely, that’s the appeal but you can’t discount how years of calling HRC the devil incarnate worked.

Again, he is only able to do this because American media deliberately excuses him of anything he does and forgets about his sins within a few days. The most true statement he has said is that major media outlets will beg him to win again in 2020 because he is good for them.

Trump’s top public health official resigned Wednesday amid mounting questions about financial conflicts of interest.

Dr. Brenda Fitzgerald’s resignation comes one day after POLITICO reported that one month into her tenure as CDC director, she bought shares in a tobacco company — the leading cause of preventable death and an issue she had long championed.

You think Republicans might be interested in upgrading our rail system after this?

Nope…

A train carrying members of Congress to their legislative retreat in West Virginia, hit a truck Wednesday, multiple sources told CNN.

Rep. John Faso, a New York Republican, who was on the train that crashed, said he was able to see the truck that hit the train, and that he was told that injuries were expected from people in the truck, not train.
“There was (what) looks like a tractor trailer carrying trash that was hit by the train,” Faso, who said he was in the third car of the train, told CNN.

When people say they hate ‘insider politics as usual’, what they mean is they hate ‘Democrats and Republicans who don’t overtly hate Democrats’. Being a modern American conservative means having no consistent principles outside of the dictates of your cult. The cult tells you who to hate, so you do. Michigan State U students pissed off by interim president choice. They slid former Michigan Governor John Engler (Republican) in under the radar.

Michigan State students interrupt board meeting to vent frustration over interim president pick

A Michigan State board of trustees meeting on Wednesday was interrupted by students, who used the meeting to vent frustration about the board’s unanimous decision to pick former Michigan Gov. John Engler as interim president.

Immediately after the board’s vote, MSU senior Connor Berdy jumped on a table and sat cross-legged in the middle of it.

I’d like to speak,” Berdy said, supplanting the person who was supposed to speak next. “This is not the democratic process. This meeting was put in a room specifically so there wouldn’t be a lot of people out here. This is something that we do not believe as students, members of this university and community, that reflects what we believe as Michigan State students. I just want this to be heard. We just hope, going forward, that you … allow us to be part of the process.”

Ashley Fuentes, president of the council of graduate students and a doctoral candidate in curriculum, instruction and teacher education, decried the quick selection of Engler and chided the board.

“I’ve tried to maintain my faith that MSU, despite its shortcomings and mistakes, is a place that can help pave a path forward in ending a pervasive rape culture and divisive climate,” she said. “I was even moved by your statements last Friday and hopeful you’d make good on your promises to listen to victims, students, faculty, staff and all other stakeholders in this institution.

“And when several leaders met with you this Saturday, I was glad to see you sincerely wanted our input in selecting both an interim president and president. But yesterday, roughly 24 hours after meeting with students, campus or deans across campus, many of us learned that the decision had already been made.

“Disappointed does not feel like a strong enough word to describe upon learning of your hasty appointment of ex-Gov. John Engler. Even on a temporary basis, the damage that can be caused by appointing a politician as an interim president on an already polarized campus is catastrophic,” Fuentes said. “Ex-Gov. Engler’s past legislation and policies in the past are in direct conflict with our core value of our inclusion.

Private payrolls grew more than expected.

The new year got off to a strong start for job creation, with businesses adding 234,000 in January, according to a report Wednesday from ADP and Moody’s Analytics.

Economists surveyed by Reuters had been looking for private payrolls to grow by 185,000.

Job creation was concentrated largely in service-related industries, which contributed 212,000 to the total.

Within that sector some of the better-paying industries showed solid gains: Trade, transportation and utilities led with 51,000, education and health services added 47,000 and professional and businesses services contributed 46,000. Leisure and hospitality services also grew by 46,000.

Maybe Bob Inglis will run for it again (that seat went Inglis, DeMint, Inglis, Gowdy). He hates Trump and has been pretty vocal about it. (Dems haven’t had the seat since 1993.)

That would be so weird. Inglis defended Obama too IIRC. He’s conservative but not batshit.

I liked this paragraph, as demonstrating her evolution:

Moreover, especially for Democrats who too often fall into a laundry list of constituent complaints, he made an admirable stab at unity — real unity, unlike the pretense of unity that President Trump cynically set forth. Kennedy insisted that “we are all equal, that we all count in the eyes of our laws, our leaders, our God, and our government. That is the American promise.” And indeed, it’s what Republicans would abandon and, worse, reject on the premise that America is a pitiful giant willing to take only people who are already successful and look like us.

re: #343 Big Beautiful Door

Let’s say in theory a Democratic Congress could get Trump to sign good bills out of his desperation for Rose Garden signing ceremonies. What’s wrong with that?

This is an interesting consideration, and a likely scenario. Trump himself has no particular principles other than wanting praise and to indulge in petty cruelty. A Democratic Congress could easily, by flattery, get him to sign pretty much anything. They can almost do it now except for the fact that he keeps watching FOX and Friends and talking to Nazis and thus getting redirected back to what they want. It is likely that if such negative influences were removed, he would do whatever Schumer and Pelosi wanted, if they clapped for him enough.

It would, of course, be disgusting to pander to such an obscene man to get him to sign what you want, but let’s leave that aside for a moment. I think it a very likely scenario that Democrats retake the House this year, and with a divided Congress, try to get something good done by flattering Trump and marginalising Mitch McConnell. Trump continues to be personally repulsive and narcissistic, demanding that the whole world praise him if he signs something that any decent human being would do. Obligingly, we do. He wins again in 2020, but sometime in his second term Democrats also manage to take the Senate, and he signs basically anything Democrats put in front of him at that point, claiming credit loudly. He will never be impeached. He will never face any consequences of any sort. When he eventually leaves office, he will continue to be the go-to personality for the entire US media, and will continue to be featured as content until he dies. The entire country will do what it always does whenever white people do something inhumane and ghastly, such as gun massacres or electing Trump, and try to smooth all of it over, declaring sagely that it is time to move on and heal, not dwell on the past. And just like that, America will have accepted that they are the country of Trump.

On one hand, you could argue that it’s okay if we bite our tongues and allow the most disgusting man on earth to praise himself and wallow in media adoration like a pig in mud, if he signs things that do good for people. And there’s some truth to that. However, simply by being elected, Trump has done immeasurable damage to America’s democracy, to the rule of law, and to the fabric of a nation that prides itself on being the centre of the free world. Every day he is in office and enabled in his autocracy, America becomes less and less free, and the American dream of equality and justice for all becomes more and more vapourware. And when he leaves, America will declare that, yes, we elected a stupid man with no redeeming qualities and treated him like a God-King, and yes, our laws mean nothing. But for the good of all (and by good of all, we mean good of all white people), it’s time to move on, and pretend that all of that was okay, and part of being the greatest nation of earth.

I think that a much more likely scenario than some of the more apocalyptic alternatives, such as nuclear war or martial law. And I think that such a scenario will do nothing to repair the harm that America has inflicted on itself.

I’ll admit to being moderately surprised at the news that the Justice Department is going to drop its corruption case against Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ). Admittedly, the case was thin to begin with*, and the trials an embarrassment for the G: but I would have thought the Trump DoJ would at keep at it, if only to keep “corrupt Democrats” canards in circulation.

* Being that he’s a Senator from New Jersey, the notion that Bob Menendez is as crooked as a dog’s hind leg isn’t all that far-fetched: it’s just that the Melgen case seemed an awfully thin reed to base a prosecution on. Especially since they both skated.

Fucking pathetic. Wow.

Frank Luntz strikes me as someone who doesn’t associate what he does with any particular moral or ethical consideration. In other words, he is interested only in his narrow field of expertise - how particular words evoke known emotional responses, and how use of those words can predict actions and behaviours in response to them. Whether those words are used to help or hurt people is not something he considers, and whether the responses are benign, monstrous, peaceful, or violent, is all irrelevant. So when he praises the SOTU speech for the response it creates, he does so because it used certain words and provoked the right responses - he is praising it from a technical standpoint.

This is, of course, amoral and monstrous. But that’s Frank Luntz.

Tonight, I owe Donald Trump an apology. Tonight, I was moved and inspired. Tonight, I have hope and faith in America again.

It may go away tomorrow…
But tonight, America is great again.

cause he proved he could read a speech someone else wrote (likely without his input)?

One of the amazing things about today’s online world: Dim Jim Hoft, a perennial (and justifiable) contender for the title of Stupidest Man On The Internet manages to find someone even stupider to re-tweet.

Republicans love cops who abuse their power, if the ones on the receiving end are Liberals and/or POCs.

They hate cops who uncover abuse of power, unless it’s by Liberals and/or POCs.

There’s a common thread, but it’s not cops.

Oh, and Kash Patel, the guy who was one of the main writers of Nunes’ memo? In 2016:

Patel was summarily tossed from the judge’s chambers and Hughes — if anyone doubted his 10-gallon grumpiness — subsequently issued an “Order on Ineptitude” to berate the “pretentious lawyers” at “Main Justice.”

I’ve been on commuter trains and excursion trains that have collided with cars. The train wins EVERY damned time.

The car is usually completely wrecked, and most of the time the train doesn’t derail. When it does, then things can go bad very quickly (a Metro North collision a few years ago resulted in significant loss of life as an electrified 3d rail skewered a train and started a fire).

Most of the time, the culprit of the collision is a vehicle ignoring a crossing signal or somehow got stuck on the tracks and the train didn’t have time to stop, but there are some incidents where the signal malfunctioned, or there are no crossing gates.

I read once that in the late 19th Century, an average of 6000 people died every year, related to the railroads. Either killed in train crashes, or killed by trains or killed in other ways.

back in 1971 i think it was, the LIRR had a streak of accidents
i was in one in penn station - waiting for the doors to close and head out to LI
the train was hit from behind by another train
i flew straight up - about four feet, though i wasnt hurt
lots were
a bunch of cars derailed

someone wrote a letter to the long island press
they noticed, it seems that the most damage in these accidents was to the first or last car. their suggestion was to remove the first and last car from every train

Sounds like something Trump would propose. /

It’s still safer than driving (and most of these derailments occur because there aren’t grade separation crossings).

Here’s how far Trump was willing to go, and Sessions almost went along with it:

In an Oval Office meeting after Mueller’s appointment, Trump told Sessions he should resign, prompting the attorney general to submit a letter of resignation, according to The New York Times. But Trump ultimately rejected the resignation after advisers warned against it in the wake of Comey’s firing.

A month after that episode, Trump wanted to have White House aides fire Mueller but backed off after White House counsel Don McGahn and others made clear they were opposed to such a move, a source familiar with the deliberations told ABC News.

Asked about Gaetz’s differing account, Johnson said, “I’ll go with whatever version Gaetz says because I’m not a gangster rapper.”

He said he also likes Gaetz because he has “that fuck you mindset.”

“It was a wild time. I certainly did a bunch of jumping out of my chair,” Johnson said of the State of the Union speech itself. “Trump was straight up gangster.”

The zombie infestation is getting worse. We need to go Rick Grimes at the ballot box in Nov ‘18 and Nov ‘20 or America as we know it is done.
