re: #9 Hecuba’s daughter

If they’re worried he’d lie, they should be pushing for an informal interview rather than grand jury testimony (which is what a subpoena means). Testifying before a grand jury means you don’t get your lawyer in the room, and you’re under oath. That’s the absolute worst case scenario for Team Trump. At least in an interview, they can try and get in the room and object or kick him under the table while holding up five fingers to remind him to take the Fifth.

As for his net worth… he is definitely not liquid and probably never has been. Most of his net worth is tied up in the Trump Organization, which at its core, is a landlord/property management company. I also read reporting a while back that the main way Trump was making money was by licensing his name - basically people would pay him to put his name on the building, even though he had nothing to do with it. It’s entirely possible that the property owned by the Trump Organization is heavily leveraged (wouldn’t surprise me given Trump’s general approach to everything) and that it’s underwater in the sense that it owes more than it has in the bank. And of course, there’s rumors that most US and European banks wouldn’t touch his businesses, so he had to go to… (dun dun dun)… Russian banks to get financing.

Musician is still a job. “Staying pure to the genre” and “rejecting commercialism” seems to me to be more the complaints of purists who listen to music or view artworks. To those producers, “staying pure” doesn’t pay the rent or put food on the table.

No one asks an architect who designs buildings or bridges to “stay pure” to their art if they can make more money at it, so why the special standard for musicians?

[back to your regularly scheduled LGF]

re: #80 Charles Johnson

That wasn’t intended to bash them for making money - I have nothing against Mark Mothersbaugh and the other Devo members profiting from their work. I just think it’s sad to see how a group whose whole career was based around subversiveness has been so totally co-opted by the corporate culture of America.

Mark and Bob Mothersbaugh went on to do soundtrack work, including for Rugrats and The Wild Thornberrys, so there you are; they’re not quite as lauded and feted for that as, say, Danny Elfman, but everybody knows something they’ve done outside of Devo.

Damnit, now I can’t get the Rugrats theme out of mah head now…

OK, since we’re in the trivia section of the evening, here’s my latest “this is really unimportant but it really pisses me off” thing.

The new Peter Rabbit movie. Why and WTF. Most of the reviews have been along the lines of this one:

Tosses out the very sentiments that make Beatrix Potter’s work so beloved and so enduring in favor of the sullen bratty championing of cruelty and disenchantment. Nihilistic money-grubbing garbage.

I LOVE Beatrix Potter. One of the things I proudly checked off my bucket list was visiting her farm in the Lake District. We were even there when they were shooting the live action segments for the BBC animated series.

imdb.com

Everything about her and her creations was fabulous, and she and her estate were supposedly very protective of her work (never allowed Disney to use her stuff.)

This new “thing” looks like a mean-spirited abomination (supposedly, Peter is an asshole and Mr. McGregor is the nicest person in the movie.) Ugh.

I used to do software development for a major exchange operator, equities and options. The higher the VIX, the more money we made (“maker/taker pricing”). Volatility == more trading == more fees. I think the price correction is a good thing - not that I want anyone to take a financial hit on their investments. Market value seems to have outpaced real value IMO (by a lot).

So much of what we see in market activity is driven by speculation and not underlying value.

Foolish religious nut seems to think she knows more about the Bible than my atheist wife.

“God never commands killing in the Bible!” “Catholics aren’t real Christians!” “The country only needs to follow the X Commandments” that kind of derp.

I almost feel sorry for the woman my wife is tearing to shreds, except I know how these sorts of things turn out. “You’re possessed by Satan” and move on without ever acknowledging she either hasn’t read the Bible, or is lying about it.

Honestly we should probably be grateful for this market correction and hope it lasts for a spell. Trump’s ego & sense of immunity from consequences very much owe themselves to the economic engine he inherited from Obama (and chose to take credit for.) The timing of this market selloff was golden in that it probably kept Trump from firing Rosenstein on Friday and may keep him from taking drastic action against Mueller’s investigation right now. Public opinion will now hinge on how Trump and his Administration are perceived to be responding to this, and so far it’s not good.

Janet Yellen might have been able to quell this uncertainty, but her replacement Jerome Powell is facing a tough test in his first week as Fed Chair, and he’s the first non-economist in that position in 40 years. This does not inspire confidence.

She’s back on YouTube. She decided to tackle a different commandment, the one on theft - that’s a blind spot for people who don’t think much. She opened with an argument I’ve dealt with of “suppose you run across plans to disrupt a terrorist plot to blow up schools, do you steal the plans to save the children?”

The person she is arguing with says she would steal the plans.

According to objective morality (and the X Commandments) there is no “out” clause for any of the commandments. Stealing is always wrong, and the Commandments do not have a “defence of another” caveat.

Hannity already blamed him today.

On his Fox News radio show on Monday, Hannity said the market drop ― which at its worst saw the Dow industrials plunge by nearly 1,600 points and closing down 1,175 points for the day ― wasn’t the fault of President Donald Trump.

It’s his predecessor that’s to blame.

“Because the Obama economy was so weak all of these years, we had just artificially cheap money,” Hannity said, referring to a Fox News analysis he had seen on the cable network.

Thank you for contacting the VA National Cemetery Administration (NCA). Although the commonwealth of Puerto Rico is recognized as part of the United States, it is still a territory of the United States. Puerto Rico like other territories, such as Guam, America Samoa and the U.S. Virgin Islands, is not part of the Union of the United States. Until Puerto Rico is considered a state by Congress, then the language will continued to be written to reflect it. We hope this information is helpful.

So for those keeping score at home:

- The FBI investigation began Jun ‘16 with Papadopoulos, rather than the insistence that it began in Oct ‘16 with the FISA warrant
- The FBI acknowledged the “bias” of Steele’s information in their FISA warrant application
- Comey did not say that the “dossier” was “unverified and salacious,” but instead that certain items in it were
- McCabe did not testify that the warrants could only be obtained with information from the “dossier”
- Numerous Republicans (including ones involved in the crafting of this “memo”) have stated that it has nothing to do with Mueller’s investigation
- The DOJ was forced to admit in a court filing that Mueller’s investigation is totally lawful

Much like firing Comey, all Trump seems to have done in his effort to make an investigation go away is strengthen it while further eroding his own defense.

Not one, but two of the holistic health fan antivaxxers I know are down with the flu. Unfortunately, the 11 year old son of one of them is also sick.
I realize that the vaccine is not overly effective this year for various reasons, but it is a hell of a lot better than nothing.

So Nunes is going with the “I didn’t read the fine print” defence.

It’s only plausible for one reason: He never read the bloody thing in the first place. Perhaps that’s the reason Trey’s make a run for the door…

The idea that “the vaccine is not very effective this year” is a rather pernicious framing of flu vaccines, promoted by woo meisters and others to claim a black-or-white fallacy: If the vaccine is not 100% effective, then it’s worthless.

I got the vaccine last November. About ten days ago I came down with what might be considered symptoms of the flu: elevated temperature, loss of appetite, skin hurt, muscles ached, &c.

But all of those were significantly less than a full-blown case of the flu, and only lasted about two days.

As I mentioned earlier, I had what I thought was a cold, which kept me from spending more than an hour at the women’s march this year.

Since I was totally exhausted after doing ANYTHING for more than a week, and am still not back to par, I’m thinking that what i had was the flu.

I did have the shot, and the case I got was mild enough that I didn’t recognize it at first.

Thank you, immunology.

Well, my wife got a notification from LiveJournal that a post she made to our blog there was the number one most visited post in the world for the day.

hRwHNgiYDVMjjAo7lhgURRKDavteOvZLIQ22U8s6bXDDZnx/8vQ6/B0eRmGDDItxDr/rTxUPMiKwSJ9wRQWAtkwZxq1RbLWkVQrl+2SQMco6qJSA4DmrIMz/ErvJBbg5HCIPRMyQJXrfOIAO7pxmYAseWIcN/3fNC6WiAtdZGjQ=

That award is given out each day by LiveJournal for the post that is visited and shared most to other Websites. It was promoted across a number of respectable cooking Websites because we have a five thousand member baking group at LiveJournal which follows it.

Maybe I should give up local politics (which doesn’t pay anything) and monetise our over eighteen hidden blog instead.

I certainly wouldn’t intend anything pernicious about vaccination, though I probably could have phrased it differently. The vaccines never have been 100% effective and this year’s version is apparently less so than usual, though not to the degree often claimed. Of course, feckless media have seized on this, distorted it to sell some ads (including some for woo profiteers), and probably caused more than a few deaths in the process.
It seems likely that the vaccine will actually improve in effectiveness as the epidemic runs its course, since the disease will spread much more quickly among the un-vaccinated and will tend to optimize itself for that population.
I got the shot and I have not gotten the flu. I haven’t had it since 2003, when I nearly died from complications and subsequently resolved never to miss the shot.

re: #181 Shiplord Kirel, live from behind wingnut lines

I know you don’t mean it that way.

The problem I have is with the phrase “vaccines aren’t 100% effective” creeping into conversation.

Vaccines are never 100% effective. Woo meisters leverage that statement into normal discourse.

While anti-vax nonsense isn’t the same, it’s similar to leveraging the term “alt-right” into public discourse. There is no “alt-right.” They are racists and bigots, and some I assume are Nazis.

So when I see a phrase like “the flu vaccine is not 100% effective this year” (which we hear every year), I respond to that. I would like to see that phrase excised from public discourse in the same way I want to see “alt-right” excised.

This market correction also illustrates the fragility of Trump’s position with regards to Iran and North Korea. He can’t engage those regimes without destroying the thing he and his financiers care about most. I expect that if the markets fall much further his approval rating will hit new all time lows, perhaps plummeting to the crazification factor of 27%. Moving to fire Rosenstein would probably have a similar effect.

Furthermore the unemployment rate is basically as low as it can possibly go at the same time that he’s just gutted the solar industry and advances in AI / autonomous driving will start to kick in soon. Corporations are going to take their tax savings and, at best, invest in robots instead of people. Interests rates are going to climb, housing and gas will get more expensive just as the US government revenues fall and its credit rating likely takes another hit or two. Then there’s the prospect of Trump pulling us out of NAFTA entirely and the damage that inflicts on US exports. And all of this would be bad enough if Janet Yellen were still Fed Chair but as of Saturday we have a non-economist Trump crony guiding the economy.

Add it all up and the next few years look likely to be a long ugly grind.

Well, concerning Devo, and aware you are a far more famous musician than I am:

Musician is still a job. “Staying pure to the genre” and “rejecting commercialism” seems to me to be more the complaints of purists who listen to music or view artworks. To those producers, “staying pure” doesn’t pay the rent or put food on the table.

No one asks an architect who designs buildings or bridges to “stay pure” to their art if they can make more money at it, so why the special standard for musicians?

[back to your regularly scheduled LGF]

When I was a professional musician in Flagstaff, AZ in the 80’s, we had a commercial C&W band that played Wed-Sat at the cowboy bar. It paid the rent. Sunday evenings I had a psychobilly surf-punk band that played at the student bar, it did not pay much but was a creative outlet, and Tuesday evenings was fiddly and old-time music for the locals at the Weatherford Hotel. It also did not pay much but was more of a social outing.

Exactly. It is sociopathic behavior, dead bang. It’s not psychopathic, he’s not crazy. If a fact doesn’t fit his narcissistic worldview, however, it’s simply wrong in his mind. That’s a different kind of kink, but we can’t have a President with that kink. It could get us all killed.

The fucker has got to go.

Ok, I’m going to be a bit of a pedant.

Psychopaths, sociopaths, and narcissists are not “crazy.” They know right from wrong, they know legal from illegal, they just don’t think it applies to them. They have personality disorders.

There is a TON of debate in the mental health community on this topic and I will spare you. But what I just wrote is not something they fight over much.

That’s different than being psychotic. You see psychosis in people with mental illnesses like schizophrenia or bipolar. Psychosis is, by definition, a break from reality. These people are disorganized and need to be medicated and/or hospitalized. They genuinely have no concept of what they are doing.

I’ve been psychotic once. There is no kind of knowledge of reality. None.

Donald Trump is not psychotic but I am almost 100% certain he has a personality disorder, a nasty one.

And yes, absolutely the fucker needs to go.

A British court has just ruled that the arrest warrant for Julian Assange, first issued when he skipped bail in June of 2012, is still valid. Assange will be arrested if he steps foot outside of the Ecuadorian embassy in London where he’s claimed asylum ever since. Assange’s lawyers will continue to argue other technical points about the case throughout the afternoon.

Meanwhile, the UK’s answer to Ann Coulter seems to be in hot water:

TV personality Katie Hopkins has been detained in South Africa after being accused of spreading racial hatred.

The controversial columnist has had her passport marked and she says she fears she will not be allowed to fly out of the country, reports Devon Live.

She posted a video to Twitter after filming herself at the airport in South Africa, she said: “At passport control, I’ve been through security and I’ve been detained, my passport has been marked for spreading racial hatred here in South Africa.

“I’m not sure what’s going to happen, they’ve taken my passport away from me but it doesn’t look like a this present time I’ll be allowed to board my flight and leave the country.

The action comes after Hopkins asked fans to donate to a documentary she’s making about “military-style” attacks on white farmers in South Africa.

Hopkins was temporarily detained when she tried to enter South Africa.

I wonder if Chris will agree with this article, written by Jonathan Rauch and Benjamin Wittes of the Brookings Institute. It argues that conservatives must vote Democratic in the next elections to save Democracy. It specifically ends with this:

We understand why Republicans, even moderate ones, are reluctant to cross party lines. Party, today, is identity. But in the through-the-looking-glass era of Donald Trump, the best thing Republicans can do for their party is vote against it.

We understand, too, the many imperfections of the Democratic Party. Its left is extreme, its center is confused, and it has its share of bad apples. But the Democratic Party is not a threat to our democratic order. That is why we are rising above our independent predilections and behaving like dumb-ass partisans. It’s why we hope many smart people will do the same.

Edit: I don’t entirely agree with their view of the Democratic party, but I do agree that Democrats aren’t trying to destroy Democracy.

Dr Lizardo  Feb 6, 2018 • 8:16:02am

So, earlier today, a student and I were discussing the 1990’s US sitcom Frasier, which airs on TV here on one of the smaller networks, and which she’d never seen before (it really does lose something when it’s not in English) and her question was “How come we never see Maris?”

I tried explaining to her that it was basically a running gag in the show - that Maris was often described, but never seen, leaving it to your imagination. I don’t think my student quite understood that concept. So when she asked me what I though Maris looked like, you know, my mind flashed back to watching that show in the ’90s, and I always mentally pictured Maris as Shelley Duvall, circa early 1970’s. Sorta like this:

But, that’s just my take.

311
Belafon  Feb 6, 2018 • 8:16:11am

And the DK diary I got this from added this note at the end:

UPDATE:

Hey, it’s my first time at the top of the Rec List! Thanks for caring about this. But as long as we’re here, I want to spotlight a theme I see developing in the comments. Several kossacks took issue with the article’s characterization of the Dem Party as extreme or confused, and the typical pie fights ensued. Taking sides in that fight isn’t the point of this note, but I want to mention it as context for a request.

~~~ Please, do not attack or fight against people who are trying to help us! ~~~
I would like to have the luxury of caring about your totally valid criticism of the authors, the way the message was crafted, or the injustice of it all — I really would. But ain’t nobody got time for that. We’re not a bunch of mean girls who live to you-can’t-sit-here uncool former Republicans.
You (yes, you) did not spring from Zeus’ brow as a fully-woke liberal, ready to wage battle against intolerance and fascism. Every one of us had our journey to political awakening. I was a right pill about things when I was in college, and it took me a few years to find my way. But I did, and now I’m here. And if these people want to join us, I think there’s plenty of room at the table. My favorite way I heard it put was: When someone finally sees the light, don’t give them a hard time for not seeing it sooner.
When a jumper is on the ledge, the first goal is to keep them from jumping. Only after you have them secured do you think about finding them a therapist and fixing their insomnia. Our nation is on the ledge and needs to be talked down. We can worry about niceties later.
So please, I implore you: Let’s put aside all the nice-to-have wishes and focus on the critical, existential issues that will absolutely destroy us if they aren’t dealt with. And to do that, stop fighting people who are trying to help us!
Joe Scarborough baits Trump who he knows is watching: ‘His lawyers think he’s too stupid to talk to Mueller’
On Monday, Scarborough appeared to be directing his remarks about the interview directly at Trump, who is known to watch the show.
“He’s president of the United States,” Scarborough stated. “And I think [New York Congressman] Lee Zeldin and other people who think the president is too stupid to talk to Bob Mueller should keep their opinion to themselves. And I think his lawyers — Donald Trump can speak for himself better than some pointy-headed lawyer.”
Referring to two upcoming guests, the MSNBC host added, “They don’t think the president’s stupid like his own lawyers do.”
“Why do the president lawyers think he’s too stupid [to talk to Mueller]?” Scarborough concluded.
Levin:
“…Let’s walk through this quickly. Who are they trying to protect? Hillary Clinton. Sean, who else are they trying to protect? Barack Obama. His name never comes up. So let me help everybody with this. Loretta Lynch knew about these FISA warrants. [Sally] Yates, the deputy attorney general, the extensions Rod Rosenstein, now the deputy attorney general. He knew. FBI Director Comey, Deputy Director [Andrew] McCabe, [Peter] Strzok, the head of counterintelligence, [Lisa] Page, his girlfriend. Who else would known about these FISA applications and warrants?
Well, let me tell you a little secret. These are counterintelligence efforts. You have to assume the National Security Council (NSC) and the White House knew. Why would the FBI, Justice Department, keep that from the National Security Director in the White House? Why would they keep it from the Deputy Director in the White House? So why would be left out of the president’s daily intelligence briefing which I mentioned in March Congress also needs to get a hold of.
I am telling you, we’re looking at the FBI, we’re looking at the Department of Justice, and we are not looking at all — at all — at the White House. Hillary Clinton paid for a warrant. That’s the easiest way we can put it. Hillary Clinton colluded with the Russians. But it appears the FBI at the seniormost levels colluded with the Russians too. Whether it was witting or unwitting, it doesn’t matter. That’s a fact.”
It’d make more sense if he wasn’t a Putin apologist tho.
I had once an exchange of emails with GG over a controversial topic, where nevertheless there were actual indisputable facts in evidence; after I “caught” him either ignoring said facts by mistake or on purpose, he would not retract his earlier statements and admit he was wrong. He ended up by delivering a series of ad hominem insults.
From this exchange I gathered that GG will never ever admit he might be wrong; even when confronted with factual evidence, he will not change his mind.
He was right once, around the time the Iraq War and the Bush/Cheney cabal, but since he is totally unable to update his thinking, and things have changed,a lot, since then, that inability has progressively driven him to the side of the Russians.
He is the perfect example of the “useful idiot.”
I wonder if Chris will agree with this article, written by Jonathan Rauch and Benjamin Wittes of the Brookings Institute. It argues that conservatives must vote Democratic in the next elections to save Democracy. It specifically ends with this:
Edit: I don’t entirely agree with their view of the Democratic party, but I do agree that Democrats aren’t trying to destroy Democracy.
Don’t know about Cillizza, but Jennifer Rubin does:
If you believe in the rule of law, democratic norms and institutions and decent public debate, Republicans must pay a heavy, heavy price for indulging Trump. I am compelled to agree with Wittes and Rauch: “The goal is to make the Republican Party answerable at every level, exacting a political price so stinging as to force the party back into the democratic fold.” (That’s small “d” democratic.) Whether you think the GOP is salvageable or not, to reelect this crew in the midterms is to complete the capitulation to Trump’s anti-democratic brand of politics. Killer who committed massacre in Isla Vista was part of alt-right, new research shows
Elliot Rodger, the 22-year-old who killed six students in the college town of Isla Vista in 2014, was the first “alt-right killer” to strike in recent years, according to a new report from the Southern Poverty Law Center.
The report counts Rodger among 13 alleged alt-right killers whose actions left 43 people dead and more than 60 injured since 2014.
The alleged perpetrators were all men and most were under 30 years of age, the report says. The common thread: All participated in the “far-right ecosystem that defines the alt-right.”
One of them made several references to Rodger before carrying out his attack last year, the report says.
Amtrak train breaks apart at 125 mph
A high-speed Amtrak train bound for Penn Station broke apart as it was cruising through Maryland on Tuesday, sources told The Post.
A high-speed Amtrak train bound for Penn Station broke apart as it was moving at top speed through Maryland.
The 2150 Acela was traveling from Washington D.C. to the Big Apple when the incident happened at about 11:20 a.m. The train was traveling at about 125 mph, according to the source.
“Someone could have been walking through the train when that happened and fell to their death,” said the source.
I had once an exchange of emails with GG over a controversial topic, where nevertheless there were actual indisputable facts in evidence; after I “caught” him either ignoring said facts by mistake or on purpose, he would not retract his earlier statements and admit he was wrong. He ended up by delivering a series of ad hominem insults.
From this exchange I gathered that GG will never ever admit he might be wrong; even when confronted with factual evidence, he will not change his mind.
He was right once, around the time the Iraq War and the Bush/Cheney cabal, but since he is totally unable to update his thinking, and things have changed,a lot, since then, that inability has progressively driven him to the side of the Russians.
He is the perfect example of the “useful idiot.”
Wouldn’t he have to be useful to garner the name of useful idiot?
I have no use for him, that is for sure.
McCain is total fraud on a number of levels, and he bears a HUGE amount of responsibility for getting to us where we are politically, but when that lady at his town hall said she thought Obama was a terrorist/Muslim, he nipped that shit in the bud with a quickness.
Trump hears someone in the audience reference the lack of applause as “treason”, jumps on it, and fans the flames even more. And even if the “treason” comment was a joke, what most certainly was not “tongue in cheek” was calling the Democrats’ lack of adulation and hero worship “Un-American”, which of course prompted the mouth-breather in the audience’s “treason” comment to begin with…
