Top Trump Aide Rob Porter Out After Allegations He Abused His Ex-Wives

Politics • Views: 33,958

In the latest sordid episode of the corruption-riddled, scandal-plagued Trump administration, today another of his top aides, Rob Porter, was forced to resign when the news broke that he’d physically and mentally abused two of his ex-wives — and then Chief of Staff John Kelly actually defended him and wanted him to stay.

For weeks, Donald Trump has been souring on his Chief of Staff John Kelly because of his controlling ways and rising public profile. And now Kelly is in the midst of a bonafide crisis, one that exacerbates the president’s own #MeToo problems. On Tuesday, Kelly strongly defended White House Staff Secretary Rob Porter against disturbing allegations, first published in the Daily Mail, that he abused his ex-wives. Kelly’s decision to back Porter has left many people inside the White House angry, two sources with knowledge of the matter said. On Wednesday afternoon, Porter resigned. Axios reported Kelly wanted Porter to “stay and fight.”

Yesterday, Porter’s second wife, Jennifer Willoughby, told the Mail that Porter called her a “fucking bitch” on their honeymoon, and once pulled her naked out of the shower. In response, Kelly put out a statement calling Porter “a man of true integrity and honor” and a “trusted professional.” But shortly after Kelly rallied behind his colleague, Porter’s first wife came forward with additional harrowing allegations. Colbie Holderness, who married Porter in 2009, told the Daily Mail that Porter punched her in the face and choked her, among other alleged abuses. The article included a photo of her with a black eye. “It was not hard enough for me to pass out, but it was scary, humiliating, and dehumanizing,” she said. Porter told the Daily Mail that the allegations were “slanderous and simply false.”

Kelly’s decision to go to bat for Porter deeply frustrated White House staffers, sources told me. He was supposed to be the West Wing’s resident grown-up, but staffers are increasingly questioning Kelly’s judgment, four Republicans close to the White House told me. “It’s beyond disbelief. Everyone is trying to figure out why Kelly is leading the charge to save him,” one former West Wing official said.

And it gets worse. Because there’s also evidence that Kelly and the FBI knew about Porter’s misogynistic history before this news broke.

If Kelly did not know about the allegations in Porter’s past, then his unflinching defense is a matter of bad judgment, but there are reasons to believe that Kelly should have known. Both of Porter’s ex-wives told The Intercept that they had informed FBI agents vetting Porter about the past abuse. A senior administration official also told Politico that Kelly was aware of a 2010 protective order against Porter.

Every decent person knew America was in trouble when Donald Trump was elected, but every day it keeps getting worse.

Is it that, or does he surround himself with those already down at his level and we only know it because once operating with him, they can skip all the pretenses?

That Ultraviolet ad needs to go viral. That’s the kind of message that Dems should be pushing while simultaneously explaining what they have to offer to the American people.

We all knew Trump was sexist before he was elected. Things have only gotten worse and his lack of judgment means that things will not get any better. He just doesn’t respect women.

Porter had a security clearance despite the restraining order out against him and any investigation that would have revealed significant issues.

He was kept around anyways.

Kushner still has clearance despite lying on multiple SF-86s.

Nothing about Trumpworld is legit - and they are undermining US national security daily with these nonstop violations and ignoring policy and practice.

And all that’s before we start talking about Trump policy choices, especially related to anything with Russia in it.

From what I have read, Porter had a partial security clearance and couldn’t get a full one because of the restraining order. The fact that he has been in the White House for a full year and thus privy to confidential documents is astounding. And yet Republicans howled about Secretary Clinton’s email server.

That’s exactly it. 40 years of Republican dog whistling all the worst aspects of human nature has primed the party for its instantaneous and total takeover by the first candidate to openly and proudly be the right kind of piece of shit.

The world ends in Vonnegut’s Cat’s Cradle when one little crystal of ice-9 finds its way into the ocean and all the water on earth instantaneously becomes solid. The election of 2016 was a political equivalent of that, where one absolutely evil man crystallized the entire GOP into a markedly more evil state than it had been in before. It remains to be seen if this is a world-ending event.

Most of us are raised with the premise that justice is equally applied, but there’s a ton of US institutions that have quietly pushed towards a pre-Enlightenment system in which morality starts with checking the org chart of How Much You Matter, then determines degree of culpability.

But now it’s really open.

I cite de Sade because of his formula about people choosing to empathize with the powerful (the torturer rather than the tortured) because it’s gratifying applies to all this shit.

I admit, I’m one of those who got snookered, but that’s because I wasn’t really paying attention what Kelly was doing prior to his being brought in as CoS. In retrospect, what seemed like “cleaning house” was really about Kelly running out contrary voices in order to establish himself as the gatekeeper.

Orrin Hatch is such a fuckhead. In these situations, it’s so, so simple not to fuck up. You say,

“These are very serious accusations. If they are true, they show a side of Rob I’d never seen in our years working together. This whole thing just makes me feel sad.”

People have a couple choices for how to interpret it, since you haven’t really come down on either side. And you’ve given yourself an out for not knowing about it, since abuse is rarely done in public - that way the abuser can isolate the abused even more.

Upding for Walker reference. Edwin Walker

Edwin Anderson Walker (November 10, 1909 - October 31, 1993) — known as Ted Walker — was a United States Army officer who served in World War II and the Korean War. He became known for his staunch conservative political opinions and was criticized by U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower for promoting a personal political opinion while in uniform.

He was reprimanded again and forced to resign under President Kennedy. He became a star in Bircher world, along with the up and coming Phyllis Schlafly and has the distinction of being shot at by Lee Harvey Oswald a few months before the JFK assassination.
He has something else in common with many Trumperati, some unpleasant personal baggage.

Walker, then 66, was arrested on June 23, 1976, for public lewdness in a restroom at a Dallas park. He was accused of fondling and propositioning a male undercover police officer. He was arrested again in Dallas for public lewdness on March 16, 1977. He pleaded Nolo contendere (no contest) to one of the two misdemeanor charges, was given a suspended and a 30-day jail sentence and fined $1,000.

The immortals would amass knowledge and power that would make them very hard to take down by the time they’re 100-150. The revolution would have to happen quickly.

Looked at another way, if the immortality treatment were godawfully expensive, and thus only available to a very few, the resentment of everyone else toward them would become so great that there would be a big target on their backs.

I mean, right now there are ludicrously rich people like the Mercers and the Kochs, but we can see them getting older. And we know that cancer, heart disease - hell, even the flu! could kill them anytime, just as it could any of us. Take that away, and you remove one of the few things that puts us all in the same boat.

The whole story seems to be slowly forming that the WH knew or strongly suspected Porter was a serial abuser, but sat on the story and allowed him to remain because they didn’t honestly believe there was physical evidence.

They’ve let Trump stay in the White House too because there’s no physical evidence so the way they handled Porter appears to be par for the course.

Ages ago in North Beach, Frisco, the early 1980’s to be somewhat precise, I had the pleasure of occasionally bending the elbow and shooting the bull with the inimitable Warren Winckle. I suspect the book is total bullshit, but I’d much rather read Mr. Hinkle’s bullshit than most anyone else’s bullshit (though I have to admit I thought he was run over by a train years ago, so that was total bullshit). He reminded me a lot of Malachy McCourt, another wonderful character, writer, editor and elbowbender. I seriously doubt I’ll ever read it, but I hope the book sells like psilocybin-laced hotcakes, because back in the day he made me and others at Vesuvio Cafe, and other joints, laugh our sides off.

Especially since it isn’t true (and it’s a right-wing talking point). After the election, Senator Al Franken’s victory was challenged in court by his Republican opponent, and Franken was not seated until much later. Shortly after Franken was seated, Senator Ted Kennedy died.

There was never a super-majority except for a few days (assuming all the D’s plus independents voted together), and things like saving the economy were an issue.

Here’s part of a famous letter by Eisenhower:

Now it is true that I believe this country is following a dangerous trend when it permits too great a degree of centralization of governmental functions. I oppose this-in some instances the fight is a rather desperate one. But to attain any success it is quite clear that the Federal government cannot avoid or escape responsibilities which the mass of the people firmly believe should be undertaken by it. The political processes of our country are such that if a rule of reason is not applied in this effort, we will lose everything-even to a possible and drastic change in the Constitution. This is what I mean by my constant insistence upon “moderation” in government. Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes you can do these things. Among them are H. L. Hunt (you possibly know his background), a few other Texas oil millionaires, and an occasional politician or business man from other areas. Their number is negligible and they are stupid.

Ike was wrong. That negligible fraction of stupid zealots has grown enough to take over the Republican party.

Porter didn’t get a FULL TS clearance (Top Secret-No Forn/EWO) because of the hits discovered in his check.

Kelly. Knew This.

No doubt he knew this. Had to.

But he defended him today. This is worse than troubling.

To put him into a position where he reviewed documents before they went to the President is unbelievable. Who cleared the documents that prevented anything above TS from slipping into his hands? Why put another layer of Security after him to review documents going the Drumpf that he couldn’t review? Did that layer even exist?

You know, given all the revelations in recent months about Republicans being caught as either adulterers, sexual predators, or domestic abusers, the idea that Al Franken had to “take one for the team” just to help the DNC in November becomes ever more repugnant.

I’d rather the Democrats take the high road on this issue. Moreover, it was Al Franken’s decision to leave. The attacks on Kirsten Gillibrand “kneecapping” Franken seem to ignore all the other elected Democratic officials who also called for accounting on this issue. I wonder why that might be?

Politics (even local politics) is not a nice game. Franken did not drag out a spectacle like the continuing Dumpster fire from Trump and a whole lot of other Republican politicians.

And nothing prevents Al Franken from running again, though that might not be wise (I am not a political consultant).

Considering how many R seats are being flipped to D seats in special elections all around the nation (and not the reverse of that), I think Franken did the right thing here (and I was originally in the “let this play out” camp).

Yesterday’s military parade news blew it up big. Guess I need to take a longer break.

Ulcers are caused by bacteria, and easily cured these days. One of the people who discovered that had to fight against the established “wisdom” that they were stress-induced, and gave himself an ulcer with the bacteria to prove it.

Steele is a private citizen who worked for a private company to investigate claims about a private citizen by going through public channels. There is no evidence whatsoever that anything he shared with the FBI was a national secret or of a classified nature, and now accusing him of having violated the rules is in total contradiction with the idea that his entire “dossier” was a bunch of fabrications.

But you know, aside from all that, Fox is still talking out its ass.

Really, what the GOP are hacked over is that Steele’s reputation for honesty and integrity is standing in the way of calling him a smut peddler who produced a “dossier” full of lies. The only way they see to attacking his character is to accuse him of having committed a crime, and their reasoning behind that is thinner than a human hair.

We’ve assumed that the Big Lie machine is attacking the FBI because Mueller is closing in on Trump. What if the investigation is spreading out as well as closing in though?
There is plenty of evidence that Russian influence actually started at lower levels and is pervasive throughout conservative America. Remember the California secession guy absconding to Russia, or the proven Russian involvement in the Texas secession nuttery?
How far does it go?
With what he has learned about Russian influence financing in particular, Mueller may have the goods on hundreds of tools, with thousands (yes, thousands) in danger of being named as un-indicted co-conspirators.

The process Mueller and his team of expert lawyers has to be meticulous as all hell. Dotting all the ‘t’s’ and crossing all the ‘i’s’ is taking a long time, because of what you outline in re: Russian influence on American business and politics.

Dec. 2017:

A small but vocal group of conservative lawmakers, much of the conservative media and, at times, the president himself have launched a series of attacks to paint not only Mr. Mueller but institutions once considered sacrosanct to Republicans like the F.B.I. and Justice Department as dangerously biased against Mr. Trump. One of them, Representative Francis Rooney of Florida, called on Tuesday for top F.B.I. and Justice Department officials to be “purged.”

She didn’t have clearance to read what could be highly classified national secrets, we didn’t know if she was really a Russian spy, she could be giving our nation’s secrets to anybody!!

Now we find out that the White House knew for months that Porter could not obtain a security clearance because he was considered at risk for blackmail, and yet they not only kept him on, but allowed him to have continued access to documents containing our nation’s secrets. And would have kept him on if not for a single photo being published by the Daily Mail.

Some day, not in this country, scholars are going to produce analyses of this regime that will ultimately approach the volume of information that has been published about Nazi Germany.

Senator Linda Lopez:

Commentary: I am astounded that the Albuquerque Journal would publish such an outrageous editorial cartoon on the Page A14 Opinion section on Wednesday, February 7, 2018, that equates Dreamers with criminal MS13 gang members. It is yet another glaring example of the ignorance, racism and hatred openly permeating throughout our country since the election of Donald Trump, only this time it is strangely happening in New Mexico.
………..
For the Albuquerque Journal to run such an insensitive portrayal of Dreamers by unfairly comparing them with one of society’s most violent and unsavory criminal elements exhibits yet another example of institutionalized racism. In addition, equating the MS13 thugs in the cartoon with future Democrats leaves us with an obvious insight of the newspaper’s institutionalized partisanship.

We have three holidays for vets and I can’t go to a sporting event without them being honored nor can I apply for a job knowing a veteran is likely preferred.
