The extraordinary Banda Magda is a colourful group of five musicians led by the Greek composer and singer Magda Giannikou. The band began in New York just seven years ago and already has performed on stages in 22 countries around the world and in numerous festivals.

Combining jazz and a variety of Latin American musical styles, Banda Magda has developed a unique elegant sound spiced with dynamic rhythms and an impeccable execution.

And that’s only the beginning. Banda Magda has an comprehensive line of workshop programmes that “encourage open-mindedness and self exploration through the study of global musical cultures”. We wouldn’t be able to come up with a better way to describe it.

We are very lucky to have them on Juke Train, please enjoy!

Thank you for that video, Mr. Johnson.

Interesting setting for a song.

The performers are magnificent in this group.

From the last thread:

re: #234 Big Beautiful Door

Based on what I read in Fire and Fury about the neverending war between factions in the WH for control of Trump, I’m guessing Porter was an ally of Kelly’s in his fight to limit Jarvanka’s access to Trump. And of course, spousal abuse just isn’t that big a deal to a he-man like Kelly. What real man doesn’t have to smack his wife around a time or two?//

If that’s what it takes to be in the “He Man Club,” count me out.

That kind of fits the empathy thing: I don’t want to be smacked around, so I’m not going to do it to anyone else.

Aside from that, my wife knows how to use an iron frying pan for things other than cooking.

Listening to AG Eric Holder on Rachael - how delightful to hear an intelligent experienced man talk about the law of the land & what is happening today within the FBI, Justice etc.

“The President is doing long term harm to the FBI and the Justice department” - and the current AG is staying silent.

That’s largely because the current AG realizes he’s fucked no matter what he does, so he figures the best option he has is just to be fucked for doing nothing than take action and either get shit-canned or indicted.

I am not interested in the religious views of a politician, except where that politician wants to impose them on others.

I don’t care if they are perfect Christians (whatever those might be). If “Christian” is your go-to best argument of why you should vote for him or her, that means I won’t.

Elon Musk will be remembered as the first man to put a production car in space. Sorry, NASA/JPL, Moon buggies and Martian rovers don’t count.

Gonna be tough to explain to the car insurance agent when the car gets hit with an asteroid though,

“Mr Musk, were driving the car at the time?”
“No, my friend Starman was. He’s a dummy in a spacesuit.”
“Uh huh. OK, how fast was he going at the time?”
“Somewhere in excess of 25,000 mph, I think. I’ll need to check with the telemetry guys.”
“Haha. Nice joke there sir. Now about the asteroid, how big did you say it was? …”

DC City Council rejects the idea of a military parade, leaving the city on the hook for security, cleanup, and damage.

washingtonpost.com

Trump doesn’t actually think of Washington as a “city” or the residents therein as “people,” so I’m not sure what happens. Congress has the authority to override any ordinance or resolution passed by the city council, so we’d have to see how many toadies there are trying to ride on his coat tails ties.

The forced-birthers in my state are at it again.

LINCOLN — Nebraska lawmakers heard conflicting testimony Monday about the effects of Gov. Pete Ricketts’ proposed changes to the use of federal family planning dollars.

In his proposed state budget, Ricketts recommended ending federal Title X funding to entities that perform, counsel or refer for abortion. He has said that Nebraska is a pro-life state and that the state’s budget should reflect those values.

Title X funds are used to pay for contraceptives, cervical cancer screenings, testing and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases and related services for low-income women and men. The money cannot be used to provide abortions.

The Appropriations Committee’s hearing Monday on the proposed changes stretched from afternoon into the night. Abortion opponents, abortion rights advocates, clinic directors, lawyers, doctors and organizations lined up to weigh in.

Senators quizzed testifiers about the need for the change as well as the state’s past auditing practices.

Disagree. Sessions wants to fuck up as much shit as possible for as long as he possibly can. Any and every single thing he can do to make life difficult for black and brown people, well that’s on his agenda. If it harms white folks, so be it. If it’s regressive, Sessions is all over it.

Donna’s closer to the truth than Ricky. A theory is a hypothesis that’s been tested and verified as correct to the best of our abilities and against available data up to that point. We’re trying to induce the laws of nature. Newton’s “law” (a term used before we better understood the investigation of science) of gravity was correct until our ability to measure improved and the Special Theory of Relativity altered our understanding of the universe. Now we have the General Theory of Relativity, which, while a better explanation than Newton, isn’t compatible with quantum theory.

Syrian and US governments confirm-
Meanwhile in Syria

Syria’s state media said the U.S.-led coalition bombed government-backed troops in Khusham, a town in the oil-rich province. The media cited reports of dozens killed and wounded.
The official state news agency SANA said the local fighters were battling Islamic State militants and the U.S.-backed SDF in the area.
SANA labeled it an “aggression” and a “new massacre.”
The U.S.-led coalition said in a statement said the attack took place 5 miles east of the Euphrates River deconfliction line. The United States and Russia, which back rival forces in the province, have kept close contacts to avoid friction.

Greets and saluts from the Resistance in the chilly and frosty NYC metro area. Yesterday’s precip has turned into a ice bowl of dangerous proportions. It was just sloppy yesterday, but today it’s just treacherous.

Trump’s over at the National Prayer Breakfast where so-called religious folks are listening to a serial adulterer and sex predator is lecturing them and the nation about how the US is a beacon of justice.

Justice will only come when people stand up and hold Trump accountable for his actions. Mueller’s investigation is part of that accountability, and we know Trump’s attempted to interfere in it numerous times. He and his friends at Fox are pumping out misinformation at an epic rate, and the only thing more epic is that they keep failing when their misinformation is revealed as just that.

Of course, the problem is not that they’re revealed as liars, but that the lies are already in place and solidified in the minds of the addled and misinformed viewership. Any news to the contrary is rejected out of hand, even when right wing outlets report otherwise.

Take those supposed texts implicating Obama in something nefarious about the “investigation”. Fox claimed this was about interfering in the Clinton investigation - that he wanted updated.

WSJ then reported in no uncertain terms that this was about getting updates on the Russia investigation - what the FBI was doing to figure out what Russia had done against the US elections and their ongoing misinformation campaign.

But the lie had already departed and it’s been nonstop lies from Fox ever since.

President George W. Bush said Thursday that “there’s pretty clear evidence that the Russians meddled” in the 2016 American presidential election, forcefully rebutting fellow Republican President Trump’s denials of Moscow trying to affect the vote.
While never mentioning President Trump by name, Bush appeared to be pushing back on Trump’s attempts to have warmer relations with Russia, as well as his comments on immigration.

Here’s some evidence that Trump’s election, while dangerous, may provide some benefits, by getting the left out of its apathy. From what I was seeing, Minnesota was slowly drifting right, but not now:

The Republican turnout for Tuesday night’s precinct caucuses in Minnesota was the lowest it’s been since at least 2002, the farthest back for which numbers were available.

Just fewer than 11,000 people attended the GOP gatherings, compared with 14,000 in 2014 and nearly 20,000 in 2010, the last time there was an open seat in the governor’s office, according to figures the party has reported to the state.

“Horrifically low” is how former state lawmaker Marty Seifert described turnout in his caucus location in Marshall in southwest Minnesota. Seifert is a former state lawmaker who twice won the precinct caucus straw poll for governor, an informal ballot of the party faithful that’s taken each year the governor’s seat is on the ballot.

Tuesday’s GOP turnout compares with about 30,000 people who participated Tuesday in Democratic-Farmer Labor precinct caucuses.

It’s another big pointer that Caucuses themselves are dangerously anti-democratic and need to go away.

I have several friends in Iowa who weren’t able to go to the caucus in 2016 because they were working or out of the state. Iowa Democrats have no provision for allowing people to vote by proxy or absentee ballots.

And it sure is amazing to see Bernie and his stooges Nincompoop Nina and Tacky Tulsi defend this

Nice to see Rachel interview Holder last night. The problem I have with his antigerrymandering campaign is that it shouldn’t be limited to targeting a handful of states. We need to attack gerrymandering everywhere.

Wish Tom Steyer would shift some of his cash into pushing for a Constitutional Amendment taking redistricting out of the hands of state legislatures and putting in the hands of nonpartisan commissions.

Someone on the Intertubes was pointing out the reason for which the late Senator Daniel Inouye was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor.

I just thought I’d share it with everyone else - this is from Wikipedia.

On April 21, 1945, Inouye was grievously wounded while leading an assault on a heavily defended ridge near San Terenzo in Liguria, Italy, called the Colle Musatello. The ridge served as a strongpoint of the German fortifications known as the Gothic Line, the last and most unyielding line of German defensive works in Italy. As he led his platoon in a flanking maneuver, three German machine guns opened fire from covered positions 40 yards away, pinning his men to the ground. Inouye stood up to attack and was shot in the stomach. Ignoring his wound, he proceeded to attack and destroy the first machine gun nest with hand grenades and his Thompson submachine gun. When informed of the severity of his wound, he refused treatment and rallied his men for an attack on the second machine gun position, which he successfully destroyed before collapsing from blood loss.
As his squad distracted the third machine gunner, Inouye crawled toward the final bunker, coming within 10 yards. As he raised himself up and cocked his arm to throw his last grenade, a German soldier inside the bunker fired a rifle grenade, which struck his right elbow, nearly severing most of his arm and leaving his primed grenade reflexively “clenched in a fist that suddenly didn’t belong to me anymore”. Inouye’s horrified soldiers moved to his aid, but he shouted for them to keep back out of fear his severed fist would involuntarily relax and drop the grenade. While the German inside the bunker reloaded his rifle, Inouye pried the live grenade from his useless right hand and transferred it to his left. As the enemy soldier aimed his rifle at him, Inouye tossed the grenade into the bunker and destroyed it. He stumbled to his feet and continued forward, silencing the last German resistance with a one-handed burst from his Thompson before being wounded in the leg and tumbling unconscious to the bottom of the ridge. He awoke to see the worried men of his platoon hovering over him. His only comment before being carried away was to order them back to their positions, saying “Nobody called off the war!”

And nowadays…..we have President Bone Spurs, who fought his own personal war in the 1970’s avoiding STD’s at Studio 54.

My, how times have changed.

The problem is the GOP base is never going to bail on them no matter what and they are very, VERY determined voters. The Democrats have got to focus on building a coalition of equally determined voters vs. trying to peel off GOP voters.

They’ve made progress in that area but there is still work to do to knock off Trump in 2020 and that’s assuming there isn’t further Russian intererence.

Democrats also have to get their base out. And getting people angry by pointing out how Republicans are damaging the country and refusing to hold people accountable is one way to do it. That’s a play from the GOP playbook I support.

Plus, this lack of accountability is what is causing some conservatives to declare that it’s time to abandon the GOP. The longer we keep this stuff in the news, more and more will feel compelled to leave.

It’s a win-win to me.

Whoa, USA Today!

Trump is a weak man posing as a strongman. He prefers gaudy displays of strength to actual strength. Appearances can be deceiving, which is why Trump likes them. He’s the sort of person who would forgo chemotherapy and die rather than lose his hair and live.

For him, the parade is more important than the military. This is not to disparage him. Adam Smith wrote in The Wealth of Nations, “With the greater part of rich people, the chief enjoyment of riches consists in the parade of riches, which in their eye is never so complete as when they appear to possess those decisive marks of opulence which nobody can possess but themselves.”

Trump’s ill-fated airline, the Trump Shuttle, featured faux-marble sinks, gold-plated fixtures, leather seats and chrome seat-belt buckles — none of which passengers cared about. Trump’s “diamond in the sky,” as he called it, failed because it prioritized luxury — or, rather, the aura of luxury — over utility.

This is what Trump’s parade will do. Rather than spending the money on the military, Trump is spending money to show off the military. He is making the military weaker in order to show how strong it is.

Just be sure to clap.

While you were watching the Trump show, Republicans have rolled out their latest plan to prevent Democrats from governing.

Democrats try to stop Nevada recall and save their state Senate majority

Washington (CNN)Democrats are going to court in Nevada on Wednesday to try to stop a recall election that they fear could lead to new efforts to wipe out legislative majorities across the country.

Republicans in Nevada are seeking to recall two senators who were elected in 2016 — without alleging any wrongdoing on the part of the senators.

Why oust Sens. Joyce Woodhouse and Nicole Cannizzaro? Because both are Democrats, and if the GOP can flip two seats, it will take control of the state Senate.
If the recall effort succeeds, it could provide a model to flip legislatures across the nation in the 20 states that allow the process, putting all narrowly divided legislative bodies in those states at risk.

In Washington state, Democrats’ narrow majorities in the Senate and House could be in jeopardy. And the GOP’s hold on the senates of Colorado and Minnesota could also be overturned through recalls.

“If we no longer have fixed terms of office and we can all just gather signatures and call elections anytime it suits us, you’re going to see a very different type of system,” said Marc Elias, the Democratic elections lawyer who is attempting to stop the Nevada recalls in court.

From the article. Step it up, dems!

If there’s a silver lining for Republicans in the latest data, it’s that Democrats haven’t yet taken maximum advantage of the climate and there are still a few holes on their recruitment board. Of the 95 districts Trump either won by less than 15 points or lost in 2016, there were 34 where no Democrat had at least $100,000 in the bank and 48 where no Democrat had more than $250,000 at the end of 2017.

This list includes two Clinton-won districts where Democrats have struggled to recruit against popular GOP incumbents: CA-21 (Rep. David Valadao) and NY-24 (Rep. John Katko). It also includes districts Trump won only narrowly, including those held by Reps. Mario Diaz-Balart (FL-25), Randy Hultgren (IL-14), Justin Amash (MI-03) and Kenny Marchant (TX-24).

However, credible new Democrats are filling those gaps every day and several newly announced contenders didn’t begin raising money until after the start of 2018. These include state Rep. Clarke Tucker (AR-02), Sen. Jeff Van Drew (NJ-02), Hamilton County Clerk of Courts Aftab Pureval (OH-01) and Navy veteran Elaine Luria (VA-02). And filing deadlines have only passed in a handful of states.

Save yourself the read:

Kylie is notably a fan of butterflies, wearing a sparkly pink diamond butterfly ring for a November photo shoot and getting matching ankle butterfly tattoos with boyfriend Travis Scott. ((MORE BUTTERFLIES, BLATHER, BLEAT, BUTTERFLIES, BLAH))

Fans all over social media have made the connection between the butterfly effect and Stormi’s name, pointing out chaos theory in the idea that a butterfly flapping its wings can create a storm somewhere far away.

Like I said, waaaayyyy to much credit to her ability to think.

And that is not to say she is not right about Trump being bad for the country. She probably knew that before…she went with it to benefit her.

So the Albuquerque Journal — a newspaper located in a state with “Mexico” in its actual name and with a population nearing 50% Hispanic/Latino — decided to go as hard anti-Hispanic as they could.

[Embedded content]

I am not sure, but if the cartoonists name is Sean Delonas, might he not be Hispanic/Latino himself?

The sad fact about racism is it covers just about everyone no matter their own race. And Trump opens it up for say a Mexican to hate a Muslim, a Black to hate a Mexican…and so on.

Bone cancer is the absolute fucking worst.

There’s no painkiller known to man that can negate that pain. Nothing.

And the dosing needed to just dull the pain is enough to incapacitate.

Sessions is more interested in screwing doctors and patients, all while preventing anyone from considering marijuana as an alternative pain remedy for instances where opioids aren’t a good idea.

I think the failure of the 50 state strategy is that it started from the top. What we’re seeing is starting at the bottom.

And orgs like emergeamerica.org are training Democratic women to not only run for office locally, statewide and nationally, but also to work toward appointment to boards and commissions, which are great jumping off points for political exposure (and actually have some say in local government.)
