Right now Hang Seng down 1000+ & Nikkei down 551. VIX is over 33. Potential for Dow to go down 1500 due to the shutdown.

And we know who FAUX News will blame—Obama!

Meanwhile, at Fox News:

John Moody, an executive vice president and executive editor at Fox News, condemned the diversity of the U.S. Olympic team that will be marching in the opening ceremony of 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea in an op-ed published Wednesday on foxnews.com.

Moody alleges that the U.S. Olympic Committee would like to replace its modus operandi of pursuing victory with pursuing inclusion even at the cost of medals. “Unless it’s changed overnight,” Moody wrote, “the motto of the Olympics, since 1894, has been ‘Faster, Higher, Stronger.’” He continued, “It appears the U.S. Olympic Committee would like to change that to ‘Darker, Gayer, Different.’ If your goal is to win medals, that won’t work.”

So, I hear we have a two-year budget deal. Amazing. It gets the GOP past the midterms and sets the stage for some politicking in 2020. Imagine that.

And, it is my understanding the Senate opens talks on DACA/Immigration on Monday. Okay Mitch…you have your open government…time for you to stick to your word.

Hmmm. Why do I not believe in Mitch’s word? Or, maybe Mitch can do his part because he will be protected by Paulie in then House where the real mess is going to be.

That means a lot of this is up to Trump.

Duane Barry Smith, 52, was arrested Friday for domestic violence following a confrontation with the man he shares a residence in Moundville, a town outside Tuscaloosa.

According to police, the victim said that Smith became upset upon discovering the stale cereal and blamed him for failing to keep the Cap’n Crunch fresh. Smith was especially perturbed since he is missing teeth and had difficulty consuming the stale cereal

I always found it amusing that people who fret often about government power don’t say much at all about corporate power. We at least elect our elected officials who make appointments.

And of course the ultimate corporatation-as-nation-state-and-colonial-power:

The East India Company was a private company owned by stockholders and reporting to a board of directors in London. Originally formed as a monopoly on trade, it increasingly took on governmental powers with its own army and judiciary. It seldom turned a profit, as employees diverted funds into their own pockets. The British government had little control, and there was increasing anger at the corruption and irresponsibility of Company officials or “nabobs” who made vast fortunes in a few years.

What makes Moody’s rant even stupider (if possible) are some figures buried down in the article: even though the PyeongChang US team really IS the most “diverse” we’ve fielded, there are still just 10 black and 10 Asian athletes on a team of 242. His main pissoff seems to that USOC officials even mentioned “diversity” as a point of pride. Dumbass.

Why are blacks overrepresented in basketball and football, and underrepresented in most other sports? Because the barrier for entry and the cost to participate in the first two is lower than the others. Considering that 10/242 is smaller than the fraction of African Americans in the general population, most of the Olympic sports are way too costly just to jump into.

I’ve been thinking about Nancy Pelosi’s stand on the floor a couple of days ago, and the argument that it’s time for the older generation to move aside for the younger ones. I’m a Gen Xer, so I fall kind of in the middle, but her stand made me realize the answer to that challenge. And the answer is this: If the younger generation wants to become the new leaders, then they need to fight at least as hard as those like Clinton, Pelosi, Schumer, etc. Handing it to you without you earning it really is a participation trophy, and will only hurt Democrats and the country.

Now, my generation kind of sucked at it, except for Obama, Lieu, and a few others. And the new generation was trying to skate by - everyone else will take care of it - until Obama Trump came along. So, I think we might start finding our next generation of leaders. But they’ll earn it.

I remember this being brought up when Palin tried to make hockey this blue collar sport. Hockey’s always been of the five main sports kids play- baseball, basketball, hockey, football, and soccer the most expensive. We always liked football and basketball most for pick up games when we were kids because we didn’t really need much to play.

I’m not really sure they’re gullible. Trump’s policies are in their (short term) self-interest. Human nature is to prioritize short term interests, it’s an evolutionary trait that kept us alive before civilization.

A smart politician (yes, an inherent contradiction) would be working to get new energy industry jobs in places where the coal mines used to be.

It’s rather crazy to say this, but Trump not having a Chief of Staff might be best case scenario for the country. The more untenable a reckless and incompetent White House becomes, the more likely it would be to see more Congressional Republicans turn against Trump. Alternatively, that kind of mess in the White House would probably boost Democratic chances for taking back Congress in November.

Per a bit of google-fu, the US population in 2015 was 320.9m people, immigrants accounted for 43.3m people (or just over 13% of the population). The US GDP in 2015 was about 18 trillion dollars, per capita that’s 56,207. Take out those 43.3m immigrants and US GDP drops by about 2.4 trillion dollars. And that’s just the immigrants, that doesn’t count their native born children who would also be contributing to the economy.

So, yes, Tucker, we are stronger economically because of those immigrants are here. We are stronger militarily because about 5% of the active duty military are made up of foreign born Americans.

More than that. You wouldn’t be able to ship things to remote areas of the country without paying triple digits. Mail alone would never make up the cost because not enough people send mail, they send email and pay bills online.

If business stopped shipping USPS, it would collapse completely. Republicans wouldn’t bail it out (apparently the USPS dying is some kind of Republican wet dream for who knows what reason). It would go away.

Right-Wing Pastor Says Melania Trump Ordered White House To Be ‘Completely Exorcised’ Before Moving In

Last week, right-wing pastor Paul Begley, host of the “Coming Apocalypse” program, appeared on Sheila Zilinsky’s “Weekend Vigilante” podcast, where he claimed that First Lady Melania Trump ordered the White House to be “completely exorcised” before she moved in.

“When the president allowed 40 pastors to come in to the White House and anoint him with oil and lay their hands and pray on him—seven times he’s done this—that is unheard of,” Begley said. “At least he is humble enough and recognizing that he needs God enough that he keeps bringing them in for the prayer. And I’ve got to say this, it might have started with the first lady.”

“The first lady, in that five hours when the Obamas and the Trumps went down to the Capitol and Trump was being sworn in as the 45th president of the United States,” Begley claimed, “Melania Trump said to her husband, ‘I’m not going to go into that White House unless it has been completely exorcised.’”

Claiming that when the Obamas lived there, the White House was filled with “all kinds of idol gods and images and all kinds of artifacts in there that were demonic,” Begley claimed that “Melania said, ‘You’ve got to get all of that out of there and send in some preachers and priests to go in and cleanse the White House or I will not spend on night in it.’”

“During that five hours when they were ripping out carpets and changing drapes,” Begley said, “there were people in there packing up every idol. The only thing that was left, Sheila, was one cross on one wall. They cleansed the White House. They had people in there anointing it with oil and praying everywhere.”

According to Wikipedia, by the time it was broken up, it was down to about 2/3 market share. But it was doing things like undercutting prices in one area to suppress competition, and making up the price in other areas; and negotiating contracts to prevent competition.

An side effect of the breakup is it is what made Rockefeller the richest man in the world.

I’m right there with you in spirit. And this is good news:

Following the February 7 candidate filing deadline, the Ohio Democratic House Caucus has announced that they have Democratic candidates for all 99 house districts. The Caucus has coined the phrase “a choice on every ballot” and that’s exactly what they have presented.

plunderbund.com

Since David Pepper took over as The Ohio Democratic Party chairman in January 2015 there has been a lot more activity out of their office. He has completely reworked how they are doing things. It was about time. The old administration seemed to have been in a “this is the best we can do” mode.

It all could be because (From Pepper’s Wiki Page): Raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, Pepper is the son of former Procter & Gamble CEO, John Pepper.[2] Pepper earned his B. A. at Yale University and his J.D. from Yale Law School.[1]

Business background, Yale education…good for Ohio!

It’s questionable whether Standard Oil was really doing anything anti-competitive, or at least so egregious that it would require breaking up the company. But it got so big, controlling something like 90% of the market, that it was untenable to allow it to continue to exist as it did.

The real reason the trust was broken up, I believe, is that the US Navy wanted to shift from coal to oil on the capital ships. They did not want the supply of oil going through one man’s hands even if, for now, he was dependable and even patriotic. Instead, Teddy, good old Navy booster that he was, busted the trust apart.

That it was good for the rest of the nation as well was simply a happy side effect of making the pursuit of Empire more efficient.

re: #275 Belafon

According to Wikipedia, by the time it was broken up, it was down to about 2/3 market share. But it was doing things like undercutting prices in one area to suppress competition, and making up the price in other areas; and negotiating contracts to prevent competition.

An side effect of the breakup is it is what made Rockefeller the richest man in the world.

I may be misremembering the facts, been a while since I’ve read up and studied the case.

Still, I believe there is an inherent danger in businesses that become so big that they alone or with a few competitors can control the entire industry. It’s the same problem I had with the bank bailouts, they were “too big to fail” and our solution was to make them bigger.

Going to be doing some travel coming up soon and will want something to listen to. I’m considering Selwynn Raab’s book about New York’s Five Families.

Try Michael Perry’s books. Start with “Population: 485 - Meeting your Neighbors one Siren at a time”. It’s about a guy coming back to very small town Wisconsin and the books chart the story of his new life. I’m currently reading “Coop”. Very good stuff.

Greets and saluts from the Resistance from the cold NYC metro area.

We once again had a government shutdown last night. It wasn’t long, but it was notable in that it didn’t have to happen at all.

The GOP can’t get out of their own way.

We now have another temporary budget (CR) in place for 6 weeks while the GOP tries to negotiate a 2-year budget.

The GOP extremists are complaining that the Senate bipartisan compromise deal adds to the debt, but they didn’t have a problem adding $1.5 trillion to debt so millionaires could get even richer and corporations could shield their profits.

They’re just complaining that the government is spending on the wrong sort of people (namely someone who isn’t a millionaire or a corporation).

Because they have no problem running up the debt when it suits them, but use the debt as a cudgel when Democrats are in power as a means to slash and burn the safety net (which Ryan and other extremists are intent on doing while they still have a chance).

It’s super-feasible.

A 1/10 of 1% tax on stock trades… would be meaningless to people who buy stock to invest in a company and hold onto it for a meaningful time, it would only impact the high-volume arbitrage traders who trade the same stock back and forth 8 times per second for a solid hour.

Once everybody adjusts and stops doing that it wouldn’t be much of a revenue-producer, but it would make the market more likely to accomplish its actual purpose (efficient allocation of investment capital).
