Breaking: A Second White House Aide Has Now Resigned After Domestic Abuse Allegations

Politics • Views: 31,040

Wow. This is, uh, becoming quite a trend with the Trump administration: A second White House aide has resigned amid past domestic abuse allegations.

The abrupt departure of speechwriter David Sorensen comes after his former wife claimed that he was violent and emotionally abusive during their turbulent two-and-a-half-year marriage — allegations that he vehemently denied. Rather, Sorensen said he was the victim of domestic violence in their marriage.

[…]

[Ex-wife Jessica] Corbett first contacted The Post a week before Porter’s case became public. She said that during her marriage to Sorensen, he ran a car over her foot, put out a cigarette on her hand, threw her into a wall and grasped her menacingly by her hair while they were alone on their boat in remote waters off Maine’s coast, an incident she said left her fearing for her life.

Before going to work for the Trump-thing, Sorensen was an adviser on health care to Maine’s infamous far right GOP Governor Paul LePage.

Decency will win despite the RWNJs attempts to keep America brutal. Even the Trump admin can be pressured to fire abusers.

One of the biggest driving stories in the ‘16 elections was ”How can we trust Hillary with national secrets after her email server!?”

Yet in two days, we’ve found out that not only were two White House aides (one highly placed) with access to national secrets were totally open to blackmail, but some 30 White House staff do not have full security clearance.

And the GOP will do…absolutely nothing, because there is no way to put a positive spin on all this.

Trump did not read the memo since he doesn’t read. So the question is (1) Was it John Kelly who told him not to release it or (2) was it something he heard from Fox? Since I don’t listen to Fox, I don’t know what they are advising him.

It’s hard to have winter sports when you don’t get winters.

These are places that aren’t seeing the snowpack they did over the past century. Temperatures on the rise. Lower snowfall levels. More drought.

It’s not just here in the US either.

Europe is seeing the same issues, to the point where it may be tough to hold an Olympics in many of the cities that previously hosted the Winter Games because they can’t get reliably cold weather.

From Wiki…

“Hound Dog” is a twelve-bar blues song written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. Recorded originally by Willie Mae “Big Mama” Thornton on August 13, 1952, in Los Angeles and released by Peacock Records in late February 1953, “Hound Dog” was Thornton’s only hit record, selling over 500,000 copies, spending 14 weeks in the R&B charts, including seven weeks at number one.

I wouldn’t expect a formal vote. They’ll still run interference for him, and they even have plausible excuses such as “we need to work on the budget.”

While Republicans might whinge in the press about it, I don’t expect the House to do anything at all.

So I read that Trump is thinking about replacing Kelly as CoS. Kelly had been Sec’y of DHS, till Priebus resigned and Trump moved him over.

He’s thinking of replacing him with Gary Cohn, who already works for him, or Mick Mulvaney, who is both OMB director and CFPB Administrator.

It’s like Trump only knows about 6-10 people, so he has to shuffle them around when he gets rid of somebody.

Anyone working in the Trump Administration would be well advised to buy the smallest box of business cards, because either you’ll quit, or he’ll fire you, or he’ll have you take over for someone who quit or got fired.

Hmmm. If you refresh my comment, it looks like Frum deleted the tweet. I think too many people missed the dark sarcasm and thought he was making fun of domestic violence survivors (this is one problem with the “punch up vs. punch down” concept in humor - oftentimes a joke that appears to punch down is doing the opposite, that is, ridiculing insensitivity, hypocrisy, and oppression - think “modest proposal” for a blatantly obvious example).

There is an organisation called The Clergy Project, which is a support network for current and former clergy who find they no longer believe in the things they preach. That network exists because the punishment (social and financial) is severe for a cleric who loses his or her faith.

Perhaps conservative politicians need something similar to the Clergy Project.

In 2016, Kelly testified as a character witness for Todd Shane Tomko, a Marine colonel who pleaded guilty to “sending inappropriate and sexual messages to a female corporal under his command.” He called Tomko “a superb Marine officer.” Then last year, Tomko was arrested on charges of child molestation dating back at least 15 years. “Prosecutors told the court Tomko groomed his three victims,” WAVY’s Jason Marks and Kevin Green report. “They say he made them watch pornography and learn sexual acts as early as age 4. It wasn’t until they got older that these acts were carried out.”

I’ll throw out my bet now, he’ll insist that his “national security advisors” have informed him that it wouldn’t be in the nation’s best interest to release the memo as there’s too much in it that could compromise our intelligence services. Which will sound like utter BS after the same services advised against releasing the Nunes memo, but to his mind it’ll be totally foolproof because the media won’t question what in the memo is so dangerous to national security.

The hiring committee at a major publicly traded company doesn’t typically just call someone up and say “hey, we’re looking for a new senior Vice President of legal affairs, want the gig?” There is a process that involves multiple interviews and negotiations, and someone who took a high ranking job at the DOJ in the last year isn’t typically someone who makes the list. Maybe. If Rosenstein is fired I expect Mueller may announce indictments for the trumpkins very quickly. I’m sure he’s already got some sealed indictments for the lesser charges against the trumpkins.

Mueller is just going to dare trump to do anything once the trumpkins indictments are public.

It strikes me as odd because I know lawyers have their specific specialties and how similar are these jobs? A DOJ attorney would seem to have real different experience than a corporate attorney. Does a DOJ attorney regardless of how smart and talented have the experience a corporation like WalMart would look for at that level?

Chuck is a horrible person, but he’s driven to promote himself and there are a lot of right wing idiots who are eager to sign on to help him do it. On the other hand, SOMEBODY needs to expose what this disgusting person is doing, and when he actually stalked me in real life he got on my worst side. Nobody is going to intimidate me like that.

It really makes me sick that this is where we’re at politically, with vile people like Chuck actually influential at the highest level of the US government, and I don’t want to help him so it’s a balancing act.

It strikes me as odd because I know lawyers have their specific specialties and how similar are these jobs? A DOJ attorney would seem to have real different experience than a corporate attorney. Does a DOJ attorney regardless of how smart and talented have the experience a corporation like WalMart would look for at that level?

A company’s top lawyer is legally allowed to do things that look a lot like lobbying… without calling it lobbying or registering as a lobbyist.

Also, that lawyer can offer jobs in her department to members of Congress and their spouses and offspring.

McCarthy does not appear to be the biggest bulb. I bet he gets eaten alive if he take the job. That would be from all sides too.

Plus, if it takes him out of his majority seat in the House and maybe he loses it for good to a Democrat…well, all the better.

I don’t know if this is reassuring or more depressing, but I think the old paradigm of increasing someone’s profile by featuring them no longer applies.

CCJ isn’t doing better because he’s getting more press, and thus more attention, and thus more features. His audience remains the bottom of the barrel believers (hence the Vienna sausage jab) who’ll throw money at anything…and the very, very rich people who see him as a very specific kind of investment—the need for maximum bullshit, for stupid content for stupid people who think they’re smart—in propagating their long-term goals. Neither are reaching him via you: there’s an entirely closed loop of far right/reactionary media that CCJ bottom-feeds in, that none of us have a power to crack open.

Also: “mainstream” press sources have decided to feed half the boat to Scylla and half to Charybdis. They soft-pedal the crazies that hove into public view to maintain a “both sides” milquetoast stance, but also won’t confront that there’s an entire crazy bloc that is coherent, well-funded, and coordinates its talking points.

The law was altered under the last R administration to narrow the definition of terrorist.

The only reason the right-winger who tried to hijack a train here was charged with terrorism is because he attacked critical infrastructure (a railroad).

Shooting up abortion clinics cannot be charged as terrorism, no matter how many people you kill or what your political agenda is, because the R’s changed the definition of terrorism in the law.

That is why groups such as Army of God can’t be prosecuted as terrorist groups.

Well, I agree the definition they supplied is crap. Terrorism is rooted in political or religious ideology and intended to change behaviours through, well, terror.

Shooting up abortion clinics seeks to do precisely that, and is based on religious ideology. Fits the classic definition of terrorism, but not the current legal one.

They had ground venison on sale the other day, so I’m going to try it in a cross-section of dishes:

Ma Po Tofu (ground beef or pork and soft tofu in a broth of salted black beans, chilies and Sichuan pepper)
Taiwanese “fly heads” (ground pork with salted black beans, chopped garlic chives, and oyster sauces)
Eggplant with fish seasonings (fried eggplant topped with ground meat in a sweetened vinegar reduction flavored with ginger and garlic)
Sichuan chopped meat and wild celery (exactly what it says, but flavored with tobanjiang, fermented broad bean and chili sauce)

If it stays on sale, I’ll try some kebab recipes next.

The same company produced wild boar products and antelope, but they’re not on sale.

My governing suspicion is that he’s never been a particularly pleasant person, and there was a transition point where it wasn’t even politics, just him being unpleasant.

Honestly, I see narcissism in varying degrees in all this “alt-right” stuff. It’s people who really only believe that they’re awesome, a priori. They then adorn themselves with shallowly-held ideas that elevate themselves further and denigrate others not like them, and they devote tremendous time to defiling stuff that makes them feel unimportant. There’s a whole narcissism marketplace—what I above called demimonde—where internet pseudo-intellectuals will tell you that women don’t like you because they’re evil feminist Marxists, or that your resentfulness about not getting sex is “natural” and the woman shouldn’t have said no, and that your mediocrity is actually the product of a conspiracy of all the inferior types in the world to make you feel bad….

We could use the Democratic memo the way Nunes should have used his, as a cudgel. As long as it’s not released, we can keep asking the question in the press “What does Trump know and when did he know it?” (Worked with Nixon, and Nixon was way smarter.)

I had a thought about Comey, and what he must be feeling right now (and no, there’s no sympathy in my thought). I read that people think Comey made his statement right before the election to show his independence from the upcoming Clinton administration. But I don’t think that’s what he was showing at all. Instead, I think he was trying to show that the men would still be running the country, even though a woman would be president. Instead though, she lost, and the man in the White House is attempting to destroy the integrity and independence of the FBI, his FBI.

That’s why you see Comey quoting others without outright attacking the administration directly. He knows he can’t. If he does, he pretty much proves that he compromised the integrity of the Bureau, kind of proving Trump’s point. So he’s trying to figure out how to do it from the side, and encourage those that are still there to fight. But his misogyny has done damage, not only to the FBI, but to the country as a whole.

It seems that Remington is having so much trouble selling guns, they’ll have to declare bankruptcy:

Remington is seeking debtor-in-possession financing that will allow it to fund its operations once it files for bankruptcy, the sources said. The size of the financing and timing of Remington’s bankruptcy plans could not be learned.

Some potential financing sources, including credit funds and banks, have balked at coming to Remington’s aid because of the reputation risk associated with such a move, according to the sources.

Remington, which is controlled by buyout firm Cerberus Capital Management LP, was abandoned by some of Cerberus’ private equity fund investors after one of its Bushmaster rifles was used in the Sandy Hook elementary school shooting in Connecticut in 2012 that killed 20 children and six adults.

Paul Begley: Obama Is Leading An Illuminati Plot To Assassinate Trump (goes to Right Wing Watch, more at the link):

Right-wing pastor Paul Begley, who we first became aware of when he claimed to have insider information that First Lady Melania Obama ordered the White House to be “completely exorcised” of demons before she moved in, streamed a video on YouTube earlier this week in which he asserted that Barack Obama is leading an Illuminati plot to assassinate President Trump.

“We know right now, folks, that this was treasonous,” Begley said. “They’ve tried to hijack our nation, they tried to override our election and they are trying to destroy our Constitution. This is a cabal and by their own text messages, they even say they have secret societies and they say that these societies are meeting and these are top level people of several different U.S. government agencies working together as an Illuminati, working together as a cabal, to overthrow the United States of America.”

Thanks, though I can’t read it because I don’t have a subscription. I am blocked from the article.

The gist I get from reading commentary is that Rage Furby is pissed.

I had no trouble, because I haven’t used up my free allotment for the month, I guess.

The gist is Johnson was not liked at his prep school, because he was a dick. He was not poor, despite his claiming he was. Dershowitz is quoted as saying CCJ has not changed much since he 16, a back handed compliment IMO.

Steve Bannon warns: ‘Anti-patriarchy movement’ is going to be bigger than the tea party

“I think it’s going to unfold like the tea party, only bigger,” the former White House chief strategist told Bloomberg News. “It’s not Me Too. It’s not just sexual harassment. It’s an anti-patriarchy movement.”

He added: “Time’s up on 10,000 years of recorded history. This is coming. This is real.”

After 10,000 years, we have an insecure man-child that is just one tantrum away from wiping out all life on earth. It’s about time the rule of the patriarchy ended.

The US, as we’ve discovered, may not be the best country to lead this new age in its current state (though it has the potential to be changed). But the next country in line, China, and the country that would like to be the leader, Russia, are going to resist it even more our man-children here.

Before that conflict is decided there will be a world war over fresh water.

“So he admits to being a troll for his entire life.”

It appears to me that he’s always had an intense craving for attention. His parents wanted him to attend a public high school, but he insisted on attending Milton. He applied for, and received, a scholarship to Milton as a day-student. Based on the BG article, those who attended Milton at the time CCJ was there hate his guts. None of them had anything good to say about him.

A normal person who craves acceptable would alter their behavior. I think he liked being the troll more than he craves acceptance.

You’re right. Attention trumped the acceptance…that he supposedly wanted.

Interesting. Someone(s) who could do something out of their horror of this event, did. They did what they could do in a quiet way and it’s taking down a company, an iconic symbol.

Such a war though wouldn’t between national powers though. It would be more likely a free-for-all between individuals.

For example, unless someone conquered the USA and Canada, they couldn’t do a whole lot with the Great Lakes. The Lakes will still be here.

The same with the Ogallala Aquifer: Texas and Oklahoma have drained their end of it, while Nebraska and South Dakota are preserving our end (it currently measures as having more water than average).

People in Texas and Oklahoma can’t take our end of the Aquifer back to Texas, so they have to either move here (climate or water refugees), buy water (Nebraska and South Dakota prohibit that), or try to do something like make war on the states on the north end.

Interesting note: Dan Quayle is on the Cerebus board, as the Chairman of Global Investments.

Don’t discount the aquifer being depleted or polluted into unusability. Both are possible which would hurt half the country. Then you get water war games.

CNN just had a two hour program on this from the time of Trump’s Miss Universe pageant in Russia to now. Actually even earlier to bankruptcies in the early 90s and Russian money bailouts. It talked about Russian involvement in the election, and Facebook’s direct involvement, Flynn, Manafort, The Meeting, Comey, on and on and on. To say it was damning would be seriously understating. There wasn’t anything I hadn’t heard about but seeing it all put together like that was just wow. Filthy as hell, all of them.

Oh I agree, which is why the slugfest in the courts is going on here about the Keystone XL Pipeline (and both the Republicans in the Unicameral and TransCanada keep losing). Amongst other things, the unification of normally disparate groups (hunters and fishers, conservationists, ranchers, property owners, farmers, Native Americans, &c) has been entirely successful in blocking the project.

Rumour control around here has it that TransCanada may actually abandon the project because resistance in Nebraska is too strong to overcome.

The fight against the pipeline also launched Jane Kleeb into politics (now the chairwoman of the Nebraska Democratic Party).

It seems that Remington is having so much trouble selling guns, they’ll have to declare bankruptcy:

Gee, that’s a real shame. Just waiting for the Tiny Penis Club to blame this on Obama…
