White House Security Chaos Watch: Third Official Resigns

Politics • Views: 36,247

Donald Trump is so bad at being president, and this simple fact means that the people he’s been hiring are also really bad at working in the government.

A senior official on the National Economic Council resigned on Tuesday after being informed that he would not receive a permanent security clearance, as the White House faces increasing scrutiny over the number of high-ranking officials allowed to work on interim clearances.

George David Banks, who had served since February 2017 as special assistant to the president for international energy and environmental policy, told POLITICO that he was informed by the White House counsel’s office Tuesday that his application for a permanent clearance would not be granted over his past marijuana use.

Of course, none of this would be happening if Rob Porter hadn’t gotten in trouble for (allegedly) beating his wife, and the shockingly lax approach of the Trump administration to security clearances came to light incidentally. Now we’re starting to find out how bad it really is.

This may be the one redeeming factor of having this malevolent toad in charge of the nation — he’s so incompetent at it.

One scary thing is you just know for every exposed problem, many more remain. So how badly are we getting exploited by various slightly or highly hostile powers right this minute, undiscovered?

This!!
We are crazy vulnerable in ways we don’t even know. And the stuff we do know is already hard enough to wrap our heads around. Yesterday we were reminded by every person who would know, in a formal hearing, that oh yeah they are going to attack our midterms and oh no the President doesn’t give a damn. Crazy, crazy, crazy.

when christie says it:

Former Gov. Chris Christie (R) trashed the White House staff in a discussion at the University of Virginia.

Said Christie: “You need people around you who know how to play the inside game. And I think he’s been ill-served by a number of the people around him.”

Elizabeth Warren Finally Addresses Native-American Heritage, Rips Trump for ‘Pocahontas’ Jabs

“My mother’s family was part Native American. And my daddy’s parents were bitterly opposed to their relationship. So, in 1932, when Mother was 19 and daddy had just turned 20, they eloped,” Warren explained of her Cherokee heritage in the speech, as first reported by The Boston Globe.

I do have to say, if it was just misdemeanor possession abd not a felony I think that’s not a good reason to deny someone clearance. Doesn’t change the fact that he shouldn’t have been working for months without clearance.

They usually don’t care about past casual marijuana use if you don’t lie about it. So either it was a lot, he’s still using, and/or (my guess) he lied his ass off about it in a security clearance application.

Things are getting more incestuous by the day.

“…If Trump doesn’t name anyone to succeed Brand, the next in line in the Justice order of succession is Solicitor General Noel Francisco. That is concerning. Before he joined Justice, Francisco was a law partner of Donald F. McGahn II, now the White House counsel. Their firm, Jones Day, represented the Trump campaign (though we are not aware of Francisco personally having done any of the work). Jones Day still works for the campaign; it.was paid more than $800,000 in the last quarter of 2017 to deal with, among other things, the Mueller investigation.”

This also runs the risk of showing that the family lore was wrong. Genealogists who have looked into it haven’t found a smoking gun, they found one document that shows her great-great-great-great grandmother may have been Cherokee making her 1/64th Cherokee, but even that is tenuous, so why get the DNA test and potentially give her opponents something else with which to attack her.

“…The gifts made on behalf of Edwards by his campaign contributors to keep this potential scandal quiet were intended to help him stay in the 2008 presidential race as a viable candidate. They would not have been made if not for Edwards’s status as a federal candidate, and they were linked to a federal election. They should be considered illegal campaign contributions under federal law and applicable FEC regulations and advisory opinions. A jury may end up disagreeing that Edwards knew that what he was doing was illegal, but if the government’s facts are correct, then John Edwards should be held accountable for violating federal law.”

Of course, and ancestry tests are of limited reliability so it would be easy to concoct a conspiracy theory. IIRC quite a large number of Native Americans actually refuse such tests, though some tribes require them. All together now: It’s complicated.

More to the point, who cares? Warren never, ever received any benefit whatsoever from her self-reported partial ancestry. Don’t give them any justification to ask for “proof” because they just don’t deserve it.

At the end of last year / beginning of this year, it was demonstrated that Libertarian funny-money can gouge you as badly as a bank does, when transactions clogged the network and the fees went through the roof. It still costs a couple of bucks for a transaction that would be free at a bank.

Interesting Read on the ongoing Kelly fiasco

Money quote:

One White House adviser tells Sherman that Trump would prefer to see Mick Mulvaney take over the job, although the director of the Office of Management and Budget so far has shown no indication that he would agree to do so.

“Mulvaney doesn’t want it — his goal is run for governor or land a corporate gig,” the adviser says. “And his thinking is, if you’re Trump’s chief of staff, you stain yourself for the future.”

So Mulvaney thinks he is NOT tarnishing himself by doing the shit he’s been doing? HA!…HA I say!

the impression im getting is trump is not a party to this nda
what with all the denials and now cohen’s statement that he did this entirely on his own

its between daniels and the cohen

The NDA between Cohen and Daniels was designed to keep her interaction with Trump private. It was done to protect Trump. He’s a party to this whole thing even if it doesn’t involve his money.

Yes, and in my view (and at least some lawyers agree) Cohen violated election laws even if he was not reimbursed, by making an unreported expenditure intended to benefit the campaign.

If one party breaches the terms of an NDA, then it is invalidated. TRump is not used to agreements that work both ways.

My question is, if it is pursuant to a criminal act (such as prostitution presumably is), is a nondisclosure agreement in any way legal or enforceable?

I mean:

District Attorney: The cops got you red-handed, Bruno. You wanna help yourself out a little, tell us who else was in on this.

Bank Robber: I can’t. I mean, I’d like to, but we signed a NDA.

im not trying to be pedantic and i know we’re just speculating here

by buying her silence, agree 100% - The NDA between Cohen and Daniels was designed to keep her interaction with Trump private.

agree 100% - It was done to protect Trump.

this part:
He’s a party to this whole thing even if it doesn’t involve his money

if he’s an actual party to the nda, then they are all just lying - and im fine with that
if he’s not an actual party to the nda then its still hazy - many scenarios of which i have dotted the last two threads with

We should switch to a spider-based currency. It creates a vibrant economy because no one wants a large stash of spiders, which keeps the spiders circulating.

Actually, “we,” or at least those who get some of our tax money as salaries, lock up women all the time in most jurisdictions for accepting “nice presents” of $20 or $50 or $100 for a “date” in a car seat or a hot crib joint. Probably there’s some kind of threshhold above which this doesn’t happen. I’d imagine $130,000 is over that limit.

That’s a bizarre business model.
