Really, who is surprised that Willard has supplicated himself before Trump’s feet? We all remember how he talked big right up until he thought he might actually get the SecState job, then he willingly humiliated himself just to be passed over for an Exxon exec.

Much like the #NeverTrump crowd, he’ll rail against Trump when it’s convenient, go back to his “Only the GOP can save America” instincts when it isn’t.

I am pleasantly surprised and impressed. A movement like this might actually make a difference - America’s religion of human sacrifice will not be stopped by government action alone. It will take both that and a culture of public shaming, making this idea of gun madness socially unacceptable, just as smoking is. It is in this sort of thing that social media might be used for good.

Ole Mitt certainly has a high level of one of the Republican’s prized virtues. Massive, unabashed hypocrisy.

Romney also has another important GOPer skill: cringing and scraping in the Presence of the Orange Menace.

Like all authoritarians, Romney is happiest when he is personally dictating how someone else should live their life, down to the last details. The second best pleasure for authoritarians is sucking up to someone else that perceived to be in a superior position, mainly in the hopes that this authority figure will order “those people” to live exactly how the authoritarian groveler thinks they should be forced to live.

It’s the ‘grown up’ version of grade-school bullies accumulating a pack of chickenshit hangers-on.

David Brooks can go fuck himself. Gun nuts are called ‘gun nuts’ by sensible people because they are fucking gun nuts. It really is that simple. Candidates running for office have to be more restrained in their language because GOP-biased double standards in the media, but that doesn’t change the fact that gun nuts are gun nuts.

Anyone whose ideas on what to do about school shootings involve putting more guns in schools is fucking nuts.

What amazes me about “gun culture” is how often its participants indulge in the fantasy of “I could take you out, I’m dangerous” and “I’m just waiting for X to fuck up so I can start shooting at those people” but also want to be viewed as serious.

I mean, all of their competence fantasies start with the idea that everyone else is stupid, weak, and about to snap at any moment. Their understanding of crime is that it’s strangers and easily-detectable weird people, not the guy next door.

Whether or not they can hit a target is non sequitur when they have no self-awareness, no situational awareness, and no interest in how crime actual goes down.

-Roy Moore, credibly accused child molester backed 100% by Trump and the GOP after the allegations came to light.
-Ronald Williams II, the Trump voter fraud commission guy arrested for possession of child pornography.
-Ralph Shortey, Oklahoma State Senator and Trump campaign coordinator convicted of child sex trafficking.

Now this Trump dating website asshole. That’s a disconcerting number of data points tying Trump to accused or convicted pedophiles. It’s even more alarming when you put it into the context of the Pizzagate hoax controversy. It almost seems like conservative conspiracy theorists are really just projecting their own dirty associations onto Democrats.

Right, we need to bring in Red Staters to tell us how the current laws are already too restrictive, how “law-abiding citizens” should not be forced to jump through legal hoops to own a gun, and how the “real” targets should be the mentally ill and minorities.

David Brooks, never shrinking away from being absolutely wrong on every subject he pontificates about.

“Too young” to have opinions about gun control, but you can be sure if you asked them if a “responsible” 18 yr old should be allowed to own a gun, they’d not only answer in the affirmative but argue that that “young adult” was the sort of guy the Founders thought of when they wrote the 2nd Amendment.

This is the real reason the GOP’s ‘mental health’ deflection will never go anywhere. Any sensible screening along these lines will preferentially take guns away from the gun nuts because they are gun nuts.

For example, much is being made of the Parkland shooter’s social media presence with all the creepy gun fondling. But that’s what gun nuts do online. It’s their version of posing online nude with the 12” strap-on.

Yup. A NYC-only chain that was bought out a few years back by Walgreens (though it continues to operate under its own name.)

I can’t conceive of how you could possibly spend $30,000 there, unless you have an obscenely expensive prescription.

His clip from “The Andy Griffith Show” right at the end calls out the BS of the NRA and their apparatchiks. (3:04)

One gender is told that it’s “right” to be angry over a perceived slight, and that the only way they can regain face/honor/respect/pride/etc is to get revenge.

The other gender is told they need to “smile more” because men don’t like it when they frown all the time.

It’s not even just that their anger is a form of validity, but that anger is the only valid emotion a man is supposed to have. Anything else, especially sadness, fear, or concern, is somehow grounds for not being a ‘real man’. ‘Real men’ are meant to be aggressive, proactive, and willing to use force to solve their problems, especially as a first resort.

One thing I was thinking about earlier: Mass shootings are almost never carried out by women.

I’m really curious as to why that is.

What’s weird is that the first mass school shooting was an extreme outlier, carried out by a 16 year old girl using a Ruger 10/22 rimfire rifle. She lived across the street from an elementary school and just decided to shoot at the kids one morning, killed the Principal and a Janitor as they tried to get the kids to safety.

A reporter reached Spencer by phone while she was still in the house after the shooting, and asked her why she did it. She answered: “I don’t like Mondays. This livens up the day,”

We had such a shooter in a Chicago suburb in 1988 — Laurie Dann. She shot several children at a school, murdering one, fled by car, and eventually killed herself when she was trapped in a home she had entered. She had also tried poisons, a bomb, can of gasoline to attack others. en.wikipedia.org

Admittedly this is me spinning plates, but…kind of like in serial crime, women tend to assert power within a cultural frame, punching down on targets that are underneath them. Hence the immense number of nurse murderers, killers of the elderly and children, and the comparative scarcity of straight-out stalk-and-kill female serial criminals.

eta: there’s also the interesting variation of women murdering boarders and guests…which again, is a variation of the idea of targeting a dependent (within a limited frame).

They’d be on Faux, they’d be getting interviews by Breitbart, they’d even get glowing articles in the “liberal” press about how they’re advocating “common sense” responses to the shooting.

Further plate-spinning:

Back to the idea of a cultural frame to the use of power: Folie a deux criminal pairs—killer couples—demonstrate that when they perceive themselves as having license—bestowed by a male partners (or more than one, in a few cases) acting as proxies, women can and do exercise sadism and violence in a way that’s much like male serial criminals.

No sarcasm missed. I genuinely want to get to the root of what drives these monsters.

My standing position is that the public mass shooter lies in the same spectrum as the family annihilator (that is, mass murder only with a limited social frame), the domestic murderer, and the domestic abuser.

Common features that are present in different proportions (spoilered because I’m being blunt about disturbing things):

- external locus of control. Their violence is seen as a reaction, a re-assertion of power, hence the endless variations of “why did you make me do this?” in domestic abuse/murder. In extreme cases, this manifests as true paranoia (think Jared Loughner), but is also present in conspiracy theories and cleaving to various -isms that proclaim a Manichean culture war, and the old fashioned misogyny (in which the woman supposedly knows better but performs an act that merits harms, and is thus the “aggressor”).

That sense of deprivation of power may explain the suicide run of the spree*: the shooter can’t perceive a long-term “win” (contrary to the serial abuser, who sees a path to controlling the abused), and thus the momentary “win” of the spree—followed by going out on top, egoistic suicide—seems like the best option.

* However! I’m not sure that all spree shooters start their brutal act with death in mind. At least some imagine themselves getting away or continuing their spree. So “locus of control” is not a fixed number, more like a spectrum from “no perception of ability to regain power” to “desperate to continue exercising the fleeting power of the spree.” The domestic killer and/or occasional family annihilator who escapes and sets up a new family demonstrates that locus of control is not necessarily a fixed value: killing and getting away with it resets the value.

- narcissism. So many variations on this, but mostly just an inability to relate to people as anything but use-value entities. This can be seen in the crimes where sexual resentment is the justification (San Bernadino, the Montreal shooting, every “man kills ex and her family”) with the greatest clarity, and also in various supremacist -isms that make the targets lesser people, but it is also present in the grandiose Raskolnikov-like justifications that invoke a superiority-as-predator or inherent greatness. Indeed, manifestos in general are less “explanations” and more assertions of narcissism by assembling a pseudo-intellectual frame for what’s basically a masturbatory act.

Abusive relationships tend to crop up in spree shooter backgrounds, and it’s likely a reflection of this use-value quality to how they view other people. Those that fail to serve a specific desired function are targeted. In most cases, that’s wives and girlfriends and exes who have “failed” in some specific way, and the constellation of associates for abetting that “failure.” In some cases, it’s people in general, because the internal cosmos of the more grandiose spree-killer simply declares everyone else less useful. Belief-specific targeting—misogyny, racism, et cetera—incorporates this too. Personally, I suspect that Sandy Hook was about what Adam Lanza wanted from children (to abuse them) but couldn’t find a path to…kind of like the man who took over the Amish school years ago.

And it’s not a coincidence that spree shooters tend to be male, and generally white: narcissism has a cultural component, and privileged individuals leap to a place of narcissistic injury faster. Which is a big part of the phenomenon of “toxic masculinity”: the sense of entitlement to rage, cruelty, and expression of antisocial impulses.

- sadism. Not expressed in the same way as a serial criminal, where power/sex drives more and more elaborate (and eventually ritualized) expressions of power and control…including desecration of corpses, trophy keeping, necrophilia, and cannibalism…because “dead versus alive” isn’t a meaningful distinction relative to the need to keep asserting power. Your domestic killer is generally trying to maintain a power relationship, fails, and then moves to killing spontaneously, killing as part of incompetent use of physical coercion, or as a premediated act of revenge. But for the spree killer the act of killing is a kind of climax, and the planning/rehearsal phase is all about the erotism of power, the fantasy of total control (specifically in contrast to the sense that power has been taken away, or respect not given).

That there’s a spectrum involved in this can be seen in things like taunting during the spree itself, pre-emptive villification of the targets as inferiors—another role filled by manifestos and “explanations.”

- low empathy and primarily interacting with power and dominance in mind. This is a corollary of “narcissism” and “sadism” but bears its own entry, because I suspect the degree of need for power determines the pattern of the violence. A domestic killer is a failed domestic abuser, trying to create a long-term power dynamic that has a social frame, but spree killers express variable degrees of permanently asserting power over targets. Domestic murders are about personal power exchanges—spree killings are about more about an amorphous sense of being unjustly down-power relative to people in general or a specific group (women and co-workers being a common specific group), though that’s not absolute certainty. There are patterns like: killing family members before initiating the public spree; targeting someone specific before expanding the scope of violence (many people are shot, but the specific target is the ex, being the best example) that demonstrate that specific grievances are turned into general grievances (Charles Dorner is a great example of an ever-expanding list of persecutors that merited harm, even thought the starting point was narcissistic injury in the workplace).

ETA:

In effect, serial abusers and serial killers are trying to extend a power dynamic, and plan and strategize with that in mind. Both repeat, finding new targets, to meet their needs. Both experiment with new power assertion methods when deprived of their preferred operation mode: for example, serial killers are very adept at messing with psychologists, other inmates, “fans” using only narratives and minor social assertions of power (Edmund Kemper being the master, basically whole-cloth inventing excuses for his own behavior and selling them to profilers desperate for a deep-psychology explanation of sexualized serial crime inn return for small in-prison perks…Kemper thus asserting power over his reviled mother, and the profilers he duped, the prison system itself, and every asshole that believed him.) Domestic murderers and spree killers are trying to end a power dynamic as a final assertion of dominance.

- a specific breaking point in which desire, or desperation, transcends calculation of other means of obtaining power/sadistic/narcissistic needs. Again, this is best looked at in comparison to serial crime. There are serial killers for whom murder is enjoyable but about immediate needs—kill to take shit, kill to retaliate against perceived harm; kill because you can get paid to kill—who just go on and on. There are serial killers who have a very specific, fetishistic need that they want to fulfill over and over, hence the mix of predatory behavior (seeking targets) and opportunism (seizing targets that jump into view) and covering behavior (hiding so that the need can be fulfilled over and over). The domestic murderer and the spree killer generally reach the place of “I want to kill” after failing to see or execute alternatives—healthy alternatives (such as letting go of the need for power assertion), unhealthy but viable strategies (the skillset that permits long term domestic abuse, or finding a job that allows indulgence of power/sadism needs), or the serial killer pattern of addressing those needs as maintenance. Even spree killers that plan to get away plan in terms of “escape current lifestyle, maybe continue spree” rather than try to completely conceal themselves.*

The familicide John List is a very interesting demonstration of this point of arriving at a moment of desperation after failing other strategies, since he got away and started a whole second life before getting caught. With his first family, he had a tightly set-up abuse structure that met his needs until his work life and financial failures made him feel ashamed…thus desperate…thus willing to “fix” the issue by killing everyone and making a new family.

ETA:

An interesting example of this “down power, must fix with extreme measures” is the Las Vegas shooting, because it gestures at, of all things, the geopolitical scale at which this shit can work. The minute it turned out that the shooter was wealthy and spent time in SE Asia, what occurred to me was…Colonel Kurtz. Big dollar money in the developing world is an example of a perfect setup to abuse power…and sure enough, there’s signs that he was deep into child trafficking. Hitting a moment where he becomes down power by losing money—and maybe by catching wind that the law was after him, given what happened with his brother being arrested (after the shooting), we may be looking at an especially large scale narcissistic tantrum. I mean, that’s fucking dark, but none of these crimes really makes sense outside of “fuck everybody, I feel hurt and somebody’s going to get hurt to make me feel big.”

* though as we’ve just seen with Cruz trying to slip away unidentified, this is not a set value.

All of the above means that mental illness can exacerbate that lack of empathy/sadism/power need triad. Paranoia and delusions mean leaping to that critical moment of feeling out of control and overwhelmed by external forces. Anger issues (not that we have a robust pathology for anger, because our culture is fucked) mean rashness and less planning. Depression and anxiety mean a struggle to see a long term. But no mental illness completely explains the final choice of action.

In the same way, cultural factors, scaling from family influence to national/regional culture, can chop and channel the leap to mass killing. Misogyny turns up a great deal, because it the single most common cultural component that encourages lack of empathy/assertion of power/dehumanization of the target. The idea of masculinity as defined by aggression and “hitting back” dovetails with this,* as does a more general idea of lethal force as personal empowerment.

* and somewhere in here, instead of comparing with serial killers, there’s a case to be made for comparison with honor killings, honor culture violence like feuding, and even pre-modern social structures that included killing as a response to injury of personal or collective dignity (such as summary executions by samurai, vigilante violence in a caste structure, lynchings) .

I am a big fan of Foucault, who is very eloquent about power and sex in both healthy and unhealthy dynamics…and the guy that pointed to De Sade’s one good observation about people. I’m also a fan of Richard Walter—who’s part of the Vidocq Society—who profiles but is also acerbically disinterested in the sort of “deep” “mommy was indifferent to me” profiling that is embedded in the popular imagination. He’s Foucaltian in his analysis—the criminal is asserting power in some way, look for the indicators in the crime of what kind of power assertion is happening, and what that likely means about the perp—though I don’t think he actually invokes Foucault.

Being a guy who majored in genocide (basically) and vectored off into mass killings in general, I think there’s cross-cultural comparisons that we don’t make specifically because of white privilege. “Honor killings are shit that backwards brown people do, not civilized Caucasians” is implicit in a lot of the analysis of these kinds of spree murders—and domestic violence in general. One of the things CL and I used to talk about was how Islamic “honor killings” of brides and daughters wasn’t some kind of culture-bound syndrome, but part of a larger picture of shitty power/control/misogyny stuff that the US doesn’t like to admit is still in our makeup.

That’s pretty much what I’m hybridizing. Doubtless if I were actually in the field I’d find authors already covering this.

re: #87 The Ghost of a Flea

You should post this to the right-hand column of LGF as an article.

I just got back from driving around the village and raising the flags back to full-staff after the country’s latest mass shooting. Being out in 0F weather freezing my hands off whilst driving around on powder snow-covered streets in fog and coming home to slightly frostbitten hands is about how my spirit feels at the moment.

On the other hand, the mass of students and adults who have said “this far and no more” seems like a sea-change on the issue of gun violence. Rep. Paul Ryan’s clueless response to the teacher at his fund-raiser (I don’t want to talk about politics) just adds to the disconnect that conservatives have from the electorate.

When it comes to school shootings, it doesn’t matter if you are a conservative voter, or a liberal voter, or even a non-voter. Especially if you have school-aged children all you want is for the violence to end.

The students out in public now, taking to the airwaves and newspapers whilst conservative politicians hide from the press is going to shape this year’s election campaigns. An awful lot of students in every state of the nation will be eligible to vote in this election.

Moreover, they are reaching out to the survivors of other shootings (Virginia Tech, Columbine, Sandy Hook, &c).

While this might not end the NRA as an organisation, it does look like their influence is now a negative for a politician.

What would be best for the NRA would be to go back to its roots (promoting gun safety, hunting, history and collections, gunsmithing, &c). If they do not, they may very well be swept away, along with the politicians they support in either party.

That’s about thirty-five degrees warmer than it is here (my hot water pipe was frozen when I came back inside to thaw my hands).

Want some snow? (I know Teleskiguy would like our snow to be falling further south of us, like over Colorado’s mountains, though our aquifer is replenished by snowfall in the winter so we need it too.)

Perfect wintry weather here on the Rhine, just above freezing, sunny, calm and pleasant.

Radar shows the heaviest bands of snow here are from Harrisburg, Nebraska (population 100, the county seat of Banner County) to the southwest to an area east of Steamboat Springs, Colorado.

That whole line is moving northeast, and the storm system is moving east, so it will be here soon. We’re about to get a dump-ex of snow.

Actually that’s not true: We are on the Oregon Trail (and thus the road through town is a National Historic Place). We even have a friend coming by from Omaha to visit on his way back from his annual Colorado beer pub hajj, and last year we had a friend who came by when he was traveling to Yellowstone.

(The second fellow I mentioned saw the town sign and said, hey, that’s where Anymouse lives. He then spent about twenty minutes at the general store asking where I lived in town with locals giving him the side eye wondering why an out-of-stater was asking about me.)

It turns out my sister (who lives in the Los Angeles area) forgot I don’t have a Facebook account so the details about the memorial service didn’t get to me. She just contacted me to tell me it’s Saturday.

I have to tell her I cannot come: we currently have a blizzard, and mandatory water tests on Wednesday. Had she remembered I don’t live in a First World nation like California and contacted me using a novel device like a telephone, I could have made arrangements.

I regret not being able to go, and passed that on to her.

I would like to believe that there is such a force in the universe, but that is a matter of personal faith.

I also think that it is worthwhile from a cultural and standpoint, especially as a member of Western civilization, to study the Bible and its historical context.

And it is the latter that led to my first crisis of faith as a teenager when I came to understand that the Bible is inconsistent, contradictory in places and not to be understood literally.

I never was a Christian so I do not understand things like “spiritual” or “faith in things unseen.” I have read both the Bible and Qur’an several times.

I don’t really hold them in context of the history of so-called Western civilization, except as how they have been used to justify just about every atrocity committed until they were dragged kicking and screaming forward by the Enlightenment.

There is a reason they called that period “the Dark Ages.”

If Nikolas Cruz was receiving SSDI payments, I wonder if he used those proceeds to purchase his AR-15?

After Mr. Trump focused on mental health in his national address on Thursday in response to the Parkland shooting, many journalists, activists and others, like Mr. Kimmel, noted the repeal of a rule that would have prevented “seriously mentally ill” people from purchasing guns.

Federal law already bars anyone who “has been adjudicated as a mental defective or has been committed to any mental institution” from purchasing a gun. And a majority of states have laws requiring them to report mental health information to the national background check system. But gaps in the system still exist.

After the Newtown shooting, President Obama proposed adding another data source to the background check system: reports from the Social Security Administration of people who receive disability benefits through a third party because of mental impairments. According to a 2016 White House fact sheet, the rule would have affected 75,000 people.

It was opposed by the National Rifle Association, but also the American Civil Liberties Union, which said the rule violated civil rights. Some disability rights groups also argued against the rule on the basis that it perpetuated stigmas about mental illness.

Mr. Trump signed a congressional resolution that expressed disapproval of the proposed rule in February 2017, nine months before compliance would have been required.

From that article:

Nikolas Cruz, who has been linked to a history of mental illness, is believed to have used a legally obtained AR-15 in the shooting.

Linked? By who? What source? Have others intimate with the alleged mass murderer (family, friends, &c) confirmed “mental illness” or is this just a knee-jerk reaction by the New York Times (blogs said he was mentally ill, so it must be true).

As for SSDI payments, they are pretty hard to qualify for as I understand (I can’t get them because I worked for exactly one Social Security quarter and thus Social Security has rejected my claim - already fought and lost on appeal, doesn’t matter the reason I only worked one quarter was because I could not hold the job with my conditions).

120
Anymouse 🌹  Feb 20, 2018 • 4:37:30am

As for regular social security, I can qualify in five more years (at age sixty-two), or wait for larger payments (when I am sixty-five).

I’ve pretty much already gotten used to the idea of living in poverty (my biggest bill is my Internet service, which takes over 15% of my VA disability), so sixty-two is not necessarily my consideration.

I’m primarily left with three issues:

a) No life insurance company will issue a policy (at least one I can afford) to a person with epilepsy. I have to save up to die.
b) I have already outlived all the men in my family anyone can remember for generations.
c) If the libertarian nihilists conservatives in the government get their way, Wall Street will make the Social Security Trust Fund disappear managing the Social Security Trust Fund. It might not be there in eight years.

But so far everything is speculation. We’re still back to the issue of no one who would be in a position to know has claimed he was mentally ill. The NYT is just pushing the narrative that “mentally ill people are dangerous.”

As for adult children of SSDI recipients (and there is also no evidence his parents received those either), adult children are still required to qualify the same as everyone else.

As Social Security itself notes, the only way those payments can continue is if the child enters college, or the child is himself or herself disabled.

I was a prodigal student and skipped the second grade. So I did not want to lose SS payments, which continue until the semester ending on one’s 22nd birthday, so I enrolled in Indiana University in Bloomington at age 17.

That was a big mistake, it was a major party school in the 70’s and although I could certainly keep up academically, I was just not socially or emotionally developed enough and I pretty much wasted my first two semesters there.

re: #50 Targetpractice

One gender is told that it’s “right” to be angry over a perceived slight, and that the only way they can regain face/honor/respect/pride/etc is to get revenge.

The other gender is told they need to “smile more” because men don’t like it when they frown all the time.

1. Men tend to project anger outwards, women take it inwards.
2. Men are more aggressive. A good example is ways they tend to commit suicide….women take poison or overdose, men choose guns or hanging.
3. Both of those are societal messages but there is also evidence that testosterone is involved.
4. Psychopathology is found more in men. Don’t discount what lack of empathy will do when combined with toxic masculinity.
5. There is the “what is it to be a man,” aggression that boils over into sexual assault, violence, and even mass shootings.

Coach Husband has a program he teaches that is about training boys to not follow the messages above. He’s won all kinds of awards in Houston for it, including Houston Coach of the Year twice. I’ve seen the HUGE difference it makes in young men when they’re taught not to buy into the aggression, bravado, and entitlement. My sons are being raised the same way.

I just got an E-mail from my sister about her wife’s memorial service.

It bothers me that people assume EVERYONE uses Facebook, and that they check it every day — or hour, even. I’ve had something similar happen to me, with my family, some of whom forget that China blocks Facebook and that I (unlike they) do not live on FB anyway.

I guess the Dollar Store pays better than I thought:

The Florida school shooter had obtained 10 rifles in the year before he went on his killing spree, a report said on Tuesday.

A law enforcement source told CNN that Nikolas Cruz had gotten possession of the firearms and authorities were trying to track down where they all came from.

Two of the weapons were purchased from Gun World of South Florida in Deerfield Beach, CNN reported.

But the store’s owner would not provide the network with any details besides saying that the sales followed “normal protocol.”

The information comes to light as debate continues on whether Cruz, who suffered from mental health issues, should have been able to purchase firearms.

This is driving me a bit crazy.

Cruz may or may not have had depression but millions of people all over the world have depression. Mental illness is not why the kid killed 17 people. He had no empathy for the people he wounded or killed and easy access to an assault weapon. Period.

cnn.com

Special counsel Robert Mueller has filed a charge against a lawyer for lying to investigators about his interaction with former Trump campaign aide Rick Gates in September 2016.

Alex Van der Zwaan is expected to plead guilty Tuesday afternoon.

He is also accused of lying about the failure to turn over an email communication to the special counsel’s office. He was speaking with investigators about his work with Skadden Arps in 2012 when the firm did work for the Ukrainian Ministry of Justice to prepare a report on the trial of Yulia Tymoshenko.

Another thought - on why stoneman is different

Its already been touched upon that these kids are articulate, angry, social media whizzes, and had the real time experience video.

I think there’s something else going on here as well.

Innocence

Sandy hook was innocence personified. The survivors were too young to relate and speak to it. Adults did; tried. And it faded. Seeing adults as surrogates does change the narrative. Because we expect different things as adults, from adults.

Most of us, when we get to 20 something or so, recognize some sense of vulnerability or mortality. Even daring devils and hero types. They may not dwell. They know it’s real and possible. Not necessarily being shot at - just anything, health, accidents, etc. And we acknowledge in each other that we all sort of come to know this.

Children dont and we hope arent supposed to. Recognize death, face it. No, theyre supposed to be protected from it, till they can get a handle on their own existence and place in the cosmos. And in the meantime deal with real consequential kid and teenage stuff.

These older kids lost that. They were targets. They are fuming. Not only did society (adults) not protect them, in a real sense a lot of adults through inaction facilitated this.

These particular kids are well educated and savvy. They got mobilized fast, and they speak well. They will not settle for half assed solutions.

I am cautious. And i think this is going to be a turning point.

This morning Charlie Stephenson provided me with the opportunity to photograph the most captivating cardinal in Alabaster, Alabama. This yellow cardinal displays a rare mutation that causes the metabolic process to produce a different type of pigment than the typical red coloration. According to a biologist from Auburn University, this mutation is so rare that only one is seen each year in the United States. To see updates on this cardinal please check out: Jeremy Black Photography.

Sarah…President Trump tweeted that Obama failed to do anything about Russia, and that the Trump administration has been much harder on the Russians than the Obama administration. To recap, Obama enacted significant sanctions against Russia and expelled a number of Russian diplomats, among other things. Mr. Trump, on the other hand, argued against a bill imposing sanctions on Russia; discussed classified intelligence with Russian officials; publicly questioned the intelligence community’s findings on Russian electoral interference; has yet to condemn Russia for its interference; stated he believed Putin was telling the truth that Russia didn’t meddle in the elections; and has refused to implement the sanctions that were passed by large bipartisan majorities in Congress. In what specific ways has the Trump Administration been tougher on Russia?

Don’t forget, that barely a month after the election, President Obama hit Russia with the hardest group of sanctions since the end of the Cold War:

U.S. imposes sanctions on Russia over election interference

Last Updated Dec 29, 2016 7:23 PM EST

The Obama administration announced Thursday a new series of sanctions against Russian intelligence entities and agents they say are responsible for hacks into the Democratic National Committee and related servers.

In addition to the sanctions, 35 Russian operatives will be expelled from the country and listed as “persona non grata.” The operatives, who are based out of the Russian embassy in Washington and the Russian consulate in San Francisco, have been informed they have 72 hours to leave the United States along with their families.

A senior administration official said Thursday afternoon that the U.S. is “responding here to a pattern of Russian behavior that has been evident for some time.” The official also said that the announced punishments are “not the sum total of everything we are doing in response to Russia’s actions … as President Obama and others have said, some of those actions will be public and some of them will not.”

Or empty a bunker of out dated explosives? The last one we set rattled base HQ an PO’d the one star in charge. But oh, that was one hell of a crater we made :D

Way back in ‘83 I was on a Demo range, with a 40 lbs shot limit due to low cloud ceilings.
As we set about establishing a complex road crater we shot of eight 15 lbs shape charges to bore our holes. There had been a brief break in the clouds, so no one complaints. unfortunately, by the time we had dropped the eight 40 lbs cratering charges down the hole the ceiling had closed up, and dropped.
The NCOs in charge laughed as they decided since the charges would technically go off at separate times (fractions of a second apart) it would be OK.
The resulting shock wave literally rattled every barracks door in their frames across the entire 82 Abn Div area. At the Division HQs building, closer to the demo range than any other building in the division, coffee cups were knocked over, and the CGs office window was cracked.

Don Jr. Advises President Trump After School Shooting: Don’t Go Wobbly on Guns (The Daily Beast)

As President Donald Trump surveys aides and guests at his resort at Mar-a-Lago about what to do about gun control in the wake of another school shooting, one voice close to him is advising that he not give in to those calling for stricter measures.

Donald Trump Jr., the president’s eldest son, has been assuring his dad that the right move was to stay strong on gun rights and draw a hard line on the issue that helped propel him in the 2016 election. He is among the host of people talking to the president in the wake of the massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, which resulted in the death of 17 people. But the fact that he is family makes his access more personal and his guidance more trusted.

Don Jr. is a sociopath who likes to kill intelligent animals.

I am sure he played a lot of violent games on his Xbox, but I am not allowed to say that.

You’re allowed to say that, but doing so implies that you think that there is some sort of causal relationship between violent video games and mass murder.

1. There are several studies that refute this argument
2. Even just basic observations make this line of reasoning fairly suspect. For example, violent video games are popular globally and no other country has this epidemic of violence.
3. And now for the personal anecdote. I have probably snuffed out nearly a trillion virtual lives (why settle for first person shooters, when you can use a stellar converter to destroy an entire planet) and have no desire to replicate even the smallest iota of this in meat world.

It’s the firearms.

Gun massacres, though high profile, aren’t the biggest tragedy of America’s cult of human sacrifice. It’s the thousands of deaths in ones and twos, of kids killing each other with handguns and rifles and shotguns found around the home, of law-abiding people pulling their law-abiding firearms in a fit of rage or confusion and shooting each other deliberately or by mistake in a totally law-abiding fashion.

To be sure. Dim Jim Hoft and his inane site might be supremely stupid, but I notice it’s a very-well-crafted stupid: his headline hits all the “right” points in order: Activist >> FBI >> Coached >> Anti-Trump. If you ignore that fact that, at bottom, it is utter wingnut bullshit, the “accusation” -however vile - holds together. Then again, anyone who would take Gateway Pundit as a serious “news” source probably isn’t likely to have a lot of logic circuits firing at the same time anyway…

I’m amused by his use of “activist” as some kind of slam. What the hell does he think he is? Or the goons lining up at CPAC this week? They aren’t ‘activists’, too?

I have to disagree with you on the “always the firearms” part: it is much more a matter of the nearly unlimited access, the lack of liability laws for owners and dealers and the absence or non-enforcement of reasonable laws involving sale and handling of firearms.

I have to disagree with you on the “always the firearms” part: it is much more a matter of the nearly unlimited access, the lack of liability laws for owners and dealers and the absence or non-enforcement of reasonable laws involving sale and handling of firearms.

I don’t see how your points are distinct and separate from ‘the firearms’. All of these things proliferate firearms. All of these things massively increase the numbers and usage of firearms. Other dangerous things in society are regulated, such as cars, but there are many other things that are dangerous but have nearly unlimited access, lack of liability laws, and absence of reasonable laws involving sale, such as knives, pressure cookers, and so on. None of these things actually get used to kill people in significant numbers, as you know, because firearms are so much easier. Which is my point - it’s always the firearms.

I think what you are trying to say is that ‘the firearms’ themselves are fine, it’s just the laws we have or don’t have that allow this gundamentalist free-for-all that are the problem. I think that’s drawing a distinction that isn’t there - the belief that guns themselves are this neutral, perfectly ordinary thing that exist in a vacuum completely separate from the manner in which they are used is part of the US gun culture that has gotten us to this point. For things to change, the entire American attitude towards firearms has to change - having them, using them, buying them, carrying them, and so on. There are ways to have firearms in societies without becoming a society of human sacrifice. America’s so far from there it probably won’t get there in our lifetimes. But for it to change, we have to stop pretending that the Sacred Gun is a separate, inviolate thing that is only sullied by our mortal failings.

The 18-year old gunman who killed nine people in Munich, Germany, on Friday was a fan of first-person shooter video games, according to reports. This detail in the unspooling story of the rampage led many to worry that violent video games may be negatively affecting their own children. What is the truth?

Both the American Psychological Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics take a firm stance against children and teens playing violent video games.

The psychological group reports that more than 90% of children in the United States play video games. Among kids between the ages of 12 and 17, the number rises to 97%. More important, 85% or more of video games on the market contain some form of violence. The titles seem to say it all: “Manhunt,” “Thrill Kill,” “Gears of War” and “Mortal Kombat.” However, even the seemingly benign “Pokemon Go” requires players to go to battle.
The American Psychological Association observed in an August 2015 policy statement (PDF) that research demonstrated a link “between violent video game use and both increases in aggressive behavior … and decreases in prosocial behavior, empathy, and moral engagement.”

Are you fucking idiot or pretending to be one? From the 2016 article you linked to:

Whitney DeCamp, an associate professor of sociology at Western Michigan University, says the evidence points to either no relationship between playing video games and violent behavior or an “insignificant” link between the two.

[…]

He discovered that playing video games, no matter how bloody, did not predict violent behavior.

[…]

He added that newer studies “with better methods” have typically failed to find much evidence of a connection between brutal games and even minor aggressive acts, let alone violence.

re: #357 Renaissance_Man

I agree with you that there is an unhealthy attitude among many Americans that a gun is some sort of magic talisman that will keep us safe from terrorists, home invaders, mass shooters and tyrants.

Look, if you want to use a gun to defend your home, I guess that is your good right. But do not pretend that you can use one to effectively and safely stop an active-shooter situation unless you have years of training and experience, good situational awareness and nerves of steel.

Guns, like anything else, need to be reasonably regulated, and liability is one of the key means through which that can be effected: those who sell, store or transfer guns illegally or improperly must be taken to task for any damage that arises from them.

Nor do I see unlimited access to massive firepower as a God-given or Constitutional right.

re: #318 JordanRules

Social conservatives learned a long time ago that rolling back rights, once established is a lot harder than preventing their recognition. It’s why they tend to lose on the “big” abortion question (should it be legal), why they lost on gay marriage (and a hundred other marriage issues, like no fault divorce), and on more mundane things, like access to contraception.

About the only time we have been able to roll back a pre-existing right, if you will, was prohibition. And that turned out… poorly.

The gun issue is going to be very difficult because it’s not so much an issue of the right to self-defense for a lot of people, it’s the right to have this one particular thing, consequences be damned.

404
Dr. Matt  Feb 20, 2018 • 10:49:00am

It is already being framed as “anti-gun” or “pro-confiscation”. But that is not the point at all. It is about establishing effective liability and responsibility for gun use, sale and ownership, which are currently lacking in our extremely pro-gun legal and social climate.

soldiers generally know what they are walking into. and when cops, swat, fire rescue go to work sort of knowing what they might have to do that day.

a guy teaching math class is not in that pre-ready/prepared frame of mind - training etc notwithstanding.

Guns, like anything else, need to be reasonably regulated, and liability is one of the key means through which that can be effected: those who sell, store or transfer guns illegally or improperly must be taken to task for any damage that arises from them.

two points - the regulated part is going to be tough. limits, registration, training, required storage, or insurance. the 2A saying what those people think it says, and the intense focus on “shall not be infringed”. now i think it is more possible than ever before - especially that #gundamentalist tweet. but that’s gonna be a big fight. and compliance and verification? wow.

as everyone knows, i think in the shorter run, liability laws are a winner. they would be muchharder to argue against. and can be written in a way that filters out the true bad actors and strongly ncourage those other risk takers and semi-careless to be way more careful. voluntarily.

i believe that 30k number will drop
