How Low Can They Go? Right Wing Media and Blogs (With Help From Donald Trump Jr.) Now in Full Attack Mode Against Parkland Students

Politics • Views: 33,963

If you’ve watched any news programs in the past few days, you know that the students who survived the Parkland school shooting attack have been courageously speaking out, demanding action on gun control legislation.

So of course, the vile bottom-dwelling operatives of the right, including Gateway Pundit, Alex Jones and Donald Trump Jr., have now begun viciously smearing and attacking these students, spreading fake news and conspiracy theories and publishing personal information online. They always do this after a mass shooting attack, but in this case it’s even more disgusting because they’re directly targeting the students who lived through this atrocity and subjecting them to more trauma.

Melissa Ryan reports:

Dr. Kate Starbird, a professor at University of Washington, has done a lot of research on what she refers to as alternative narratives. She writes: “Over time, we noted that a similar kind of rumor kept showing up, over and over again, after each of the man-made crisis events — a conspiracy theory or ‘alternative narrative’ of the event that claimed it either didn’t happen or that it was perpetrated by someone other than the current suspects.” Starbird also highlights the role that botnets play in disseminating alternative narratives.

What Starbird describes has played out time and again. What’s different about the Parkland shooting is how quickly and powerfully survivors began speaking out. Some students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School immediately took to social media calling on President Donald Trump and Congress to do something about guns and calling out commentators like Fox’s Tomi Lahren for saying now wasn’t the time to talk about guns. David Hogg, a student journalist who interviewed students on lockdown during the shooting, made several TV appearances demanding leaders take action. Another student, Emma Gonzalez, called out the National Rifle Association (NRA) and the legislators who do its bidding. Melissa Falkowski, a teacher at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, went on CNN calling on Congress to do more to “to end gun violence, to keep our kids safe.” Lori Alhadeff, whose 14-year-old daughter was killed, screamed at President Trump on CNN to “do something.” Student survivors are organizing a march on Washington D.C..

And now, Parkland survivors are targets for fake news campaigns, conspiracy theories, harassment and doxxing. Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones has already suggested that the entire shooting is a false flag, which implies that all of the survivors are actors in an elaborate hoax. As survivors speak up, there are already attempts to attack and discredit them individually.

The most high-profile attacker is the president’s son, Donald Trump Jr., who has “liked” two tweets attacking the students by right wing bloggers and news sources. For example:

Survivor David Hogg gave a statement to Buzzfeed News:

Hogg told BuzzFeed News on Tuesday that Trump Jr.’s peddling of conspiracy theories was “immature, rude, and inhuman.”
“I just think it’s a testament to the sick immaturity and broken state of our government when these people feel the need to pedal conspiracy theories about people that were in a school shooting where 17 people died and it just makes me sick,” Hogg said.

“It’s immature, rude, and inhuman for these people to destroy the people trying to prevent the death of the future of America because they won’t,” he said.

Popular conservative sexual harasser Bill O’Reilly is now joining the attacks on the students, with a grotesque patronizing tweet:

And we all know it won’t be long before our so-called president joins in. I’m sure his advisers are telling him to keep quiet about this, but he won’t be able to resist the right wing feeding frenzy.

The worst are those like O’Reilly who feign concern and act like they’re being exploited and are victims of peer pressure. No, you insensitive fuck, they witnessed first hand why your policy on guns is a terrible failure in this country.

O’Reilly is at least trying to be nuanced, blaming it on peer pressure.

FROM OTHER TEENS WHO JUST DON’T WANT TO GET SHOT

But their tactics of attack and defamation (the only one they seem to know) is about to backfire on them big time. These kids have the upper hand and they know it…

The big question is: should the media be promoting opinions by teenagers who are in an emotional state and facing extreme peer pressure in some cases?

No, Bill, the big question is, should we listen to the opinions of a man who claims never to have harassed any women, but paid out tens of millions in settlements and lost his job over it?

I vote no.

Props to her stating time, date, and location, but nobody keeps security footage that long. Usually it’s only a couple of weeks, at most. Unless something happens that records need to be maintained for legal reasons.

While I absolutely believe her over Trump, there wouldn’t be much danger of calling for the release of 11 year old security footage either way. Video takes a lot of storage space and I don’t know of anyone who keeps archived security video for that long unless it was pulled for a police report.

BillO’s trying to be a ‘reasonable’ voice, to accompany the unhinged attacks on the kids. I would not be surprised if he says something like, “It’s wrong to attack these kids, but should we base policy on their emotional reactions?” as if the whole gunfucker side isn’t just emotion.

When I see those lists of weapons/explosives in the arsenals some nutbags have, I remember the scene in the first Terminator movie, where Arnold goes into a gun store and ask for a laundry list of guns. The owner lays all of them out on the counter - including a 12ga shotgun with a drum magazine - and says, “Any one of those is perfect for home defense!”

O’Reilly can go fuck himself. He’s a stochastic terrorist with blood on his hands for the murder of Dr. Tiller. So he has absolutely no business talking about emotional manipulation of others without first taking a long hard look in his mirror and failing to find his reflection in it.

NRATV host finds a way to blame the Parkland school shooting Obama and Hillary

GRANT STINCHFIELD (HOST): Now we look at the investigation into this shooter, and all of the signs missed. You know number one being, as early as January the FBI got a tip that this shooter was dangerous, that he was deranged, and by all accounts everyone that knew him were worried he would do something like this. What happened? The FBI now acknowledges it failed to act, it actually apologized for failing to act on all of this. I actually believe that the FBI needs new leadership. It has gone astray. The line FBI agents that are doing the good work of Americans trying to keep us safe need new leadership. They are so focused on politics and Russian investigations that it is time the FBI got back to the business of keeping Americans safe instead of being so focused on political vendettas. […] The FBI has now gone down this road, and I do believe it’s coming from leadership and not the agents themselves, about becoming such a political entity. And I think it is all a holdover from Barack Obama and the Hillary Clinton days. And now Trump has his hands full. And sadly, things slip through the cracks, that we have people that got killed over this.

Someone needs to tell the Nazis that the Secretary of State has nothing to do with the FBI.

It’s not just addictive. It made my husband nuts. Tried to give him a phone number and he could not get it after multiple repetitions - he was a ChemE, brilliant man. Then that night he woke me up in a panic that we were under attack. He’d been watching a movie or something and just lost it. Next day even he was freaked, knowing something was bad wrong. He’d been prescribed this new pain med, Oxycontin, a few days before. He threw it out and was soon back to normal. He never touched the stuff again. A few years later his mom was prescribed it when she broke her hip. Same thing happened to her. Just went nuts.

People crave, I think, at least a sense of control or power. Even if they’re not using their guns, the knowledge that they have something that gives them perceived power could be useful. That’s especially true for someone who doesn’t believe they have much power in their life.

Gah. Came back from a 3-day weekend to find my workstation running like molasses in January. Somehow, Microsoft, or maybe it’s my company’s software updating system, have figured out a way to make your computer run SO SLOWLY when it needs updating that you end up restarting it from frustration.

For example, it should never take 5 minutes to launch Outlook on a dual Xeon machine with 64GB of RAM and nothing else running, right?

That must be a rare side-effect depending on an inherited genetic quirk. I can find references to psychosis when withdrawing off the drug, but not just from taking it.

Basically, I was talking about the impression I’m getting from the student protests, that this is getting beyond mere politics, and more towards an actual generational gap. As in: we can’t trust the Grown-Ups on this- and to fair, who can blame them?

In the face of this, reactions [ie from the right] like what we’ve seen so far are surely going to be viewed by students as part of the problem- exactly the sort of Grown-Up attitude that failed them for far too long.

No amount of Russia’s interference forced people to wake up in the morning and go vote for a racist, sexual predator, illiterate baboon.

And when we have cleaned out the Trump administration, and repaired most of their damage, those people will still be there. We will owe Trump a grudging thanks, for revealing that.

73
dangerman  Feb 20, 2018 • 12:18:35pm

I want solutions that work. I define “work” in this context as getting something done. While everyone digs in defending their own agenda, reducing the actual, real world carnage.

They will keep up with the twisted interpretations of what the 2A really means, militias, well regulated, competency, forced buy backs / Australia, the purpose of a gun, why I want a gun, why you need a gun, why no one needs a gun, or any other ‘justification’ - all the comparisons to cars, registrations, insurance, etc. Special manufacturer protection laws, databases, permits, buy limits, waiting periods, ammo taxes, bans, training, “guns make you safer”, “no they don’t.”

Most of this is constitutionally impossible stuff no matter how “common sense”. Until there is a sea change moment.

So i focus on “accept the accountability for whatever your gun does or don’t own a gun.” that includes who and how you sell it. whether you are a dealer or a private citizen.

the 2A is about keeping and bearing. not buying and selling. or use or misuse. the 2A does not shield you from reckless disregard, negligence, carelessness

I think we need help from our allies. No, not UN troops to round up guns and Bibles, but some well thought out sanctions against American gun nuts and those who profit from them. At the very least, countries like the UK can prevent their nationals from participating in the private gun business in the states. There is in fact some such participation right now. Outlaw that the same way you would ownership of an Iranian bomb factory.
Secondly, individual Americans who promote the slaughter can be barred entry. Does Wayne LePenis ever visit his ancestral France? Given the importance these fascists attach to bloodlines, he probably does. That should stop. The man is a menace, so is anyone whose public efforts contribute to the ongoing massacre of thousands.

No.. no way..
They can’t have KE penetrators and MBTs are designed to stop HEAT cold (composite/spaced armor)

Tanks are tough and mines work today by blowing off tracks, not by trying to defeat the toughest part of the armored envelope. That said top attack works but this mine doesn’t do that.

Each mine would need some kind of active sensor (which can be detected)

Cost..

Life span.. active system take power

Oh and driving a transport aircraft over a combat zone has been known to be a bad move if you want it back. (Much easier and cheaper just to setup normal mine fields)

We know, though, that’s a simplification. Most, like 80% of the voters in this country, don’t go very deep in their politics. All it took was a disinformation campaign to slant things in Trump’s direction that these people would fall for. I personally heap a lot of blame on the voters, but had the Russians not ran the campaign, the turnout would have been different.

I guess you couldn’t even wait to send the clear message; we do not care about your feelings.

And it appears it isn’t too early in this tragedy to show your asses.

Damn, the GOP in Florida really are politically tone deaf. Or, assholes.

There was an article by some journalist who had never held a gun before. He wrote about how it made him uncomfortable. The right wingers I know mocked him for that. Meanwhile we’ve come to the conclusion that while my grandfather hunted, he probably never fired a round and he was definitely close to being a pacifist at the end. OK. Here’s a slice of insanity for you. In most states the mere possession of these is unlawful. In some you can own but not carry on your person. In some states it can be in your possession as long as it is carried in the open, on your hip, outside your pocket.
But in no state is the carrying, or ownership of semi auto rifles that cannot hunt, are useless for home defense, and only throw out a large amount of lead in a short period of time illegal.
What could this dangerous weapon be?

I am extremely comfortable with guns. I have shot several hundred rounds of pistol, rifle, and shotgun ammo. I am still afraid of them, because the slightest mistake will either wound you (usually permanently) or kill you. Bingo. Anyone who gets casual about handling guns is an idiot. I use table saws and other power tools regularly, and always keep in mind that getting casual is a great way to lose parts of your body. Always respect the tool and keep in mind how easily you can get hurt if you aren’t careful and following basic safety rules. Same applies to guns.

An old friend of mine is a construction worker. For as long as I knew him, once a month he’d come into church with some form of major injury that he incurred at work because he was doing something he shouldn’t have been, secure in his competency and not thinking about following the safety rules. If that applies to a nail gun, why would that not apply to a bullet gun?

Even when my sister and I were adults (18+), my dad kept the guns - even his home defense pistol - unloaded and locked in a box. He valued our safety over his ability to pull his gun out in an instant. He did show me where the ammunition and keys were, but of course impressed upon me how deep a heap of shit I would be in if he ever found out I unlocked it without asking him.

Yes! I’ve made several comments that some of these students have to come from conservative homes. Like you say, Florida is a Red State (wobbly, but red) and a decent proportion of their parents probably supported conservative candidates and thinking.

This is putting a crimp in conservatives and the politicians seem to be too smug to realize it.

The students might cause a major split in conservative politics.

Had this happened in California we can already imagine the wingnuts attacks. We see them attacking kids from a red state already calling them pawns of liberals, etc.

I’m starting to love Nicole Wallace…..

I’ve always been a big fan of those who start with views opposite to mine and then through experience, study, and insight eventually realize their errors. Our host here, for example, Nicole, Steve Schmidt, David Jolly, Jennifer Rubin, Andrew Sullivan (to some extent), etc.

And I hope that if facts lead me in a different direction on some policy, I have the wisdom to reconsider my position.

The only things that happen after a mass shooting are that idiots make a run on AR-15’s and ammo, and gun manufacturers stock prices rise. Given these facts, you’d think people might re-think who was engaging in so-called “false flag” operations.

283
goddamnedfrank  Feb 20, 2018 • 2:36:40pm

This is a cop out.

President Trump on Tuesday directed Attorney General Jeff Sessions to craft new regulations to ban firearm modifiers including the “bump stock” used in the Las Vegas massacre, amid bipartisan calls to strengthen gun laws in the wake of recent shooting rampages.

Federal law defines a machine gun thusly:

The term “machinegun” means any weapon which shoots, is designed to shoot, or can be readily restored to shoot, automatically more than one shot, without manual reloading, by a single function of the trigger. The term shall also include the frame or receiver of any such weapon, any part designed and intended solely and exclusively, or combination of parts designed and intended, for use in converting a weapon into a machinegun, and any combination of parts from which a machinegun can be assembled if such parts are in the possession or under the control of a person.

Bump stocks are legal because the trigger is constantly being re pulled, or more accurately it is being re bumped against the trigger finger under recoil. The stock is not part of the frame or receiver of the gun and they need a new law to address that admittedly pedantic but incontrovertible fact, and even if it were again bump stocks don’t work by a single function of the trigger. Congressional Republicans are terrified of having the ammosexual lobby hold them responsible for any new law curtailing gun rights, so Trump is trying to foist this entire mess and the attendant blame off on the DOJ.

This is all the creation of the deplorables that he nominated for Cabinet-level positions and the Senate Republicans confirmed. Yes he is responsible for what goes out under his name — but he is clueless and doesn’t care about any provisions.

Cool video. As pointed out, unrealistic for a bunch of reasons. But definitely a cool video.

Interestingly, the US has been using air-dropped mines and sensors like the first one in the video since the Vietnam war.

The mines we used were much smaller than those shown in the video, so they were much easier to deploy with smaller and more agile aircraft. My favorite was named the ‘TurdSID’, It was a sensor designed to look like dog excrement.

School massacres are a good thing to the RWNJ leadership. If criminal violence helps toward that end, and it does, why would they go out of their way to stop it?

I just don’t think it’s meaningful in that it won’t cause any of them to refrain from going to the polls and voting for Republicans when the time comes. For sure it’s something to grouse over but it’s not something that they genuinely care about like real gun control, immigration or abortion.

In fact it hands them one thing they actually crave, a thin patina of independence, the ability to say “this is why both sides are bad” while they vote in lockstep for Republicans. Also, since Trump is directing the DOJ to go about it via rule making even if implemented it can be easily reversed in the future.

He doesn’t give a fuck about conflicts of interest because those conflicts are always going to be resolved in favor of the family business making more money. He doesn’t give a fuck about potential blackmail threats because the Trumps, as a family, lack the ability to feel shame. Another one who does not get how social media works…

Jon Cordova, the principal deputy assistant secretary for administration at the Department of Health and Human Services, has been placed on leave in the wake of revelations about conspiratorial and racist posts he shared on social media, CNN reported Tuesday.

“Mr. Cordova is currently on administrative leave while we look into this issue further,” an unnamed agency spokesperson told CNN.

[…]

Among the posts flagged by CNN: a story Cordova shared on Facebook in July 2016 falsely alleging that Khizr Khan was a “Muslim Brotherhood agent” and “a Muslim plant working with the Hillary Clinton campaign.” In March of that year, he shared a false story alleging Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), then competing with Donald Trump for the Republican nomination for President, “frequented prostitutes,” in CNN’s words, among other claims.

In August 2015, Cordova shared a photograph of an African American man holding a photoshopped protest sign that read “No mother should have to fear for her son’s life every time he robs a store,” the report said. In a two-year-old tweet, according to a CNN screenshot, he shared a meme comparing moveon.org and Black Lives Matter protesters to Nazi Brown Shirts.

He’s a regular on Ana Marie Cox’s podcast, about once a month, I think. He was an early Never-Trumper and strikes me as a fairly reasonable guy. That’s not to say that he’s been entirely perfect, he was responsible for an ad in 2002 that attacked Max Cleland for being soft on terrorism, so there’s that.

ETA: he was also responsible for the Jeremiah Wright ad. But having heard him on the pod, I think the scales have fallen a bit from his eyes.

The most distasteful?

In a room with Wayne Lapierre, LePen, Trump, and D’Souza?

It’s the entire room. They’re everything that’s wrong with the GOP and the right wingers.

All that’s missing are the swastikas and hoods.

It’s a septic tank with all those pathogens in it.

So, that’s what it takes to get booted from CPAC?

Being a sex predator doesn’t do that. (Trump)
Getting caught attempting to mess with a US Senator’s telcom? Nope (Jimmy O’Keefe)

There’s a bunch of others who are just as reprehensible.

Optics. That’s what got him booted. If the NRA was trending better, here still be there.

An interesting comparison. I hate to compare anything to the civil rights movement, because let’s face it, that is a singular event in the history of this country, never to be equaled. But in some ways, the process leading up to the VRA and other civil rights legislation feels similar to the fight against unrestricted gun ownership. For the longest time, no progress, it seemed like no matter what people did, nobody was listening. But eventually, people listened. Good people came in, bad people went out, and slowly the bad people still remaining started to realize how horrible it was making them look that they continued to stand against the onslaught of the peoples’ will. And as much as it burned them, in the end, they had to vote on the side of history. Might we see the same titanic forces at work here?
