A Classic: The Band - the Last Waltz - “The Weight” (Feat. The Staples Singers)

Rediscovering amazing performances like this one. I should note that the live tracks may have been extensively overdubbed and re-done in the studio (that’s how it looks to me now). I think there are still some bits of the original tracks in there somewhere, even if it’s only the tempo, but this is a reconstruction of the concert we all heard in our minds.

And yet… they produced a great piece of recorded music regardless of how much work it took to revise, replace and enhance it. A great album, even if it shouldn’t really be considered “live.”

Mavis killed it, re-recorded or not. And so did everyone else on that stage.

And somebody has to make reality resemble fantasy, sometimes, anyway.

I had to explain this to Mrs. Fish. I described it as, “Basically, they’re asking if Rubio is going to stop sucking the gun-fuckers’ cocks or not.” She was not amused.

I support the II Amendment. I have no problem with the idea of issuing titles for all firearms so they can be positively tracked from the day they are sold to the day they are destroyed.

I’m not scared of “teh gubmint is coming to take muh shotgun!”

If the government wanted to do that, there is no way I could stop it anyway.

Cops train to fire their guns and handle law enforcement.

When they come across situations too tough for them, they call in SWAT teams.

Guess what are tough for the beat cops to deal with? Active shooter situations, such as when a school is involved.

When the public needs help, they call cops. When cops need help, they call SWAT/ESU.

SWAT/ESU train nonstop for these situations. There’s no way teachers would ever have that level of proficiency, which means that when the shooter gets the drop on them, their gun is now the shooters’.

Enact the NRA’s own safety regulations, and put penalties for failing to follow them.

Jim Wright suggested that. There is a candidate running in Texas now running on that idea.

The NRA is then put on the spot: They either have to support their own safety regulations backed with penalties for failure to follow them, or repudiate their own safety regulations and be shown to be hypocrites and shills.

The NRA’s own safety regulations are actually a pretty good foundation for a set of gun safety laws.

absolutely. no one should have a problem with laws for demonstrated recklessness

For example, the NRA’s own rules say you should always safely store a firearm.

Note the NRA doesn’t specify the method, only that it is inaccessible to an unauthorised person.

Your kid gets your gun and fires it, you go to jail.

There are no such things as accidental discharges of firearms. There are only negligent ones. Negligence can be prosecuted in any number of other venues, there is no reason it can’t be prosecuted for negligent handling of firearms.

The NRA holds you should never transfer a weapon to a person unauthorised to have it (like loaning it out or selling it to an unauthorised person). Do that? Lose your rights to guns, fines, or go to jail.

The NRA notes you should know your target and what’s behind it. Negligently discharge a weapon in an unsafe direction? Negligent discharge of a firearm equals a fine if no damage, fine and misdemeanour if property is damaged, felony if a person is injured and killed.

if you lose control of your weapon whether you recklessly brandish it, or actually discharge it, whether you hit something or not, you have demonstrated you cannot be trusted with our safety.

Teacher, breaking my heart. Question to Dana: define well regulated militia. Explain to me how, using supporting details, how an 18 year old with a military rifle is well regulated. The nation is going to grade your answer.

The individual mandate is all well and good, but no one has yet addressed the “well-regulated” part of the 2nd Amendment. They focus purely on the “militia” part and the “right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed” part.

re: #104 Anymouse 🌹

One could make an argument that a revolver is a semi-automatic. (While it doesn’t eject a cartridge, the cylinder moves to put a new cartridge under the firing pin.)

It’s a repeater, like a lever action, bolt, etc. Now Belafon’s suggestion that a separate action should be required from pulling the trigger is a good one, meaning that the only legal revolvers should be single action where you have to cock the hammer manually. You could also ban swing out cylinders, which are exclusively found on double action revolvers anyway, requiring rounds to be fed into and out of the cylinder one at a time.

A gun is not a magic talisman of security that imbues its owners with unerring judgment and aim. It is not an icon of pure security, no matter how much the NRA insists it is.

The Ghost of a Flea  Feb 21, 2018 • 7:46:05pm

The NRA is only partially about the right to bear arms.

The bulk of their efforts are directed at redefining self-defense, breaking down societal mechanisms that critique and analyze firearm use both in efficacy and morality, and creating a cultural understanding of “crime” as a thing done by outsiders and misfits.

That’s what they spend all their money and words on, and what flavors their draft legislation, and which sets the parameters of their language and programming and talking points. The NRA is a reactionary organization posing as a civil liberty organization. They’ve made the gun another pillar of “tradition” and “the way things were” just as fictive and load-less as “church” and “family.” Their romantic idyll of the past demonizes formal social order—federalism, bureaucracy, jurisdiction, set standards of conduct—and lionizes an implicit social order defined by hoary-but-substanceless notions like “local control,” “honor,” “self determination.”

And implicit social systems rot faster and deeper than ones with rules and accountability…that’s the appeal. The moral ethos of the sundown town and the rotten borough. The sheriff as fixer in local intrigue and enforcer of the social hierarchy. Law as nudge-and-wink, under-the-table coordination. These are not mysterious things that have to be winnowed out of their language. Any—any—assessment of the smugness in the face of mortal harm, the excitement about the idea of getting to unleash rough justice on unwanted kinds (inevitably, sounding much like The Turner Diaries in the process). Their spokespeople—angry, disdainful, specifically teasing the notion of violence as redress for criticism—didn’t appear out of the ether. They built that culture, year after year.

US gun culture isn’t about guns, it’s just another front in the project of creating a society in which the privileged get to dictate terms at whim to their lessers. Which is why other people’s dead kids don’t rate. Why young black men always deserve it. Why cops are tyrants when they face toward white people and demand compliance but are heroes when they arbitrarily tread on black people. In the end, nobody fucking matters as much as their—The self-appointed Elect—feeling of assurance and pleasure in power.

One of the last times I posted a link about gun-rights issues, it was in reference to lobbying efforts against attempts to confiscate firearms from men accused of domestic abuse…and I think it’s the single best demonstration that the NRA and its murmuration of Ancient Pistol types could care less about anyone’s safety. To achieve the semblance of consistency of position—rather than just concede that their position is the whimsical exercise of violence for some, the passive acceptance of that rule for others—men that harm their wives and kids must retain access to weaponry so that they can protect their wives and kids.

It’s not about self-protection. It’s just another self-indulgent nihilism with a facade of tradition.

Libertines with pistols.

These people are into power, that’s what gets them off. That’s the appeal of guns. Power to kill, power to frighten, power to coerce. Take every fantasy they compose, verbal or written or cinematographic, and it comes down to that personal ability to exercise total power over another person.

Hence why gun-having isn’t enough. They have to demand deference for being gun-havers.

And just so you’re prepared in advance, here’s a case ammosexuals often drag out to support that premise…but there’s a catch:

“He was restraining me with both of his hands and the gun was across my chest and I just took my left hand and I started just pushing it away from me.”

Mira started trying to push him off with her hands and feet, using some martial arts and self-defense techniques that she had learned years before.

“Do you want to die?” he asked.

At that point, something snapped and she sprung into action, Mira said. In what she described as something like “a dream state,” she wrestled the .38-caliber revolver away from her 170-pound attacker and and rolled him onto the floor. She fired three shots at the man, striking him twice in the upper torso.

She had no firearm of her own, and she sure as hell wouldn’t have had time to retrieve it if she did - she used martial arts and self-defense training to take his gun away from him.

Peter Wang’s final act of heroism - holding the door so his classmates could escape the former student shooting up their school - inspired people from around the world.

His friends and family said the bravery during the attack on Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School last week was a natural act for the 15-year-old U.S. Army Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps cadet, who was always quick with a joke and eager to help others.

Strangers sent his family military patches and coins, the U.S. Army awarded him a Medal of Heroism, the U.S. Military Academy at West Point (his dream school) posthumously accepted him, and veterans from around the state showed up to pay their respects at his funeral Tuesday afternoon.

A reminder of what Doofy Dave’s son did. Probably because Daddy is such a religious nutcase…

dispatch.com

“I will not let you down or anyone who had faith in me,” Zachary Daubenmire told Judge Thomas Marcelain in Licking County Common Pleas Court.

Daubenmire, the 24-year-old son of Dave Daubenmire, appeared yesterday for a hearing on a felony charge of pandering obscenity involving a minor. He pleaded no contest and Marcelain found him guilty.

The judge fined him $1,000 plus court costs and told him he would serve two years in prison if he violates terms of his probation. Marcelain also designated Daubenmire as a sexually oriented offender.

House GOP Holding Background Checks Hostage to Demand Looser Gun Laws (goes to Wonkette):

Oh, yes, there’s also WORSE NEWS! For even Cornyn’s very weak reform to get support from rightwingers in the House, they’re demanding it be linked with adoption of a law requiring for “concealed carry reciprocity” — or a federal mandate that each state must respect every other state’s concealed carry permits, so everyone who lives in a state that “must issue” them licenses can carry their boom sticks around, say, the inner city of Chicago. As Politico notes, “Combining the two ideas would have the net effect of loosening gun controls.”

Reciprocity would mean that anyone could mail in for a CCW from the State of Utah (which allows that), pay a small fee, and be able to carry concealed with no training or testing anywhere in the country.

States’ rights out the window… .

There was some fixing up of the actual concert tracks (and movie — notably to remove a cocaine booger from Neil Young’s close-ups), but Mavis and co weren’t there at all. Apparently unsatisfied with one of the great live albums &/or blown out on coke, Robbie roped in the others to create a “Last Waltz Suite” which was filmed on a soundstage, no audience, and included this lovely track. The Band did do The Weight at the gig, but that performance was not included in the record; same is true of Evangeline — both have been bootlegged, and they’re not that bad; I’ll take a few bum notes for a live feel, but maybe that’s just me.

To say he and two friends are in friend’s car, just left campus and heading to a nearby grocery store ‘to regroup.’ Because they left in a hurry, because there was an announcement: “There is an emergency on campus. Evacuate immediately.”

Says that’s all he knows. Says he’s safe.

Waiting for the next text, with my blood pressure rising.

(Now back to comment #256 of the previous thread! as I try to catch up on this very long thread day. I wasn’t going sleep well tonight anyway.)

Kid’s home, rattled but safe. Says it was unnerving (to put it mildly) — he was in the chem hallway when the announcement came over the PA saying ‘get out now,’ followed by the rhythmic clunk of metal panels covering the windows. He’d naively assumed those were just blinds — says it felt like something out of a movie when the panels started slamming down. Says he and friends were joking about something smelling a little not-normal, but then said he got a good whiff of it as they left and it was definitely something that didn’t smell right. (Says that might just be because chem students were running out, of course.)

But doubly-glad he was with friends with a car, because the light rail station which is about a five-minute walk from campus had a flashing sign saying it was closed due to an emergency. Kid would have been stranded 22 miles from home in 11 degree weather, with at least a fifteen-minute walk to the nearest shopping center where he could wait for us to get to him.

No, I’m not going to sleep well tonight, but I’m the lucky one, my kid is home. We’ll have to find out tomorrow what the hell happened.

Does no one remember “bullet proof” backpacks?

Turns out they’re worthless against a weapon like an AR-15.

I don’t think they were worth much against a pea shooter. (And the ads were repulsive)

“You know who Republicans aren’t consulting regarding their idea to arm teachers? THE FUCKING TEACHERS.”

It doesn’t matter what the subject/topic is, teachers are always the last ones to be consulted. During the 33 years in my teaching career, everything was handed down from the state lawmakers and state BOE. It doesn’t matter that teachers are on the front-lines by actually being in the classroom, those without any/very little experience in education always think they know more than educators. I’ve spoken with Joe and Susie Blows who have said that all teachers do all day is sit behind their desks. I kid you not. Teaching is one of the few occupations wherein everyone thinks s/he is an expert. Never mind that a majority of these lay “experts” wouldn’t last one month in a classroom.

re: #108 Quoth the raven, Covfefe.

The individual mandate is all well and good, but no one has yet addressed the “well-regulated” part of the 2nd Amendment. They focus purely on the “militia” part and the “right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed” part.

I have been preaching that part of the 2nd for YEARS.
