Jóhann Jóhannsson presents “Flight from the City” from his highly anticipated new studio album – the first in 6 years!
Orphée traces a path from darkness into light, inspired by the Orpheus myth. A story about death and rebirth, the elusive nature of creation and art and the ephemeral nature of memory. It’s an album about change, love and art – a reflection of our relationships, as is the film Flight from the City directed and produced by Clare Langan.

I keep seeing the argument from liberals “well, we should have the sort of guns the II Amendment applied to in the XVIII Century: flintlocks.”

I’m not a particular fan of that not-well-thought out argument: I would not prefer to read Little Green Footballs in pamphlet form as the I Amendment might have applied in the XVIII Century.

I’m off to bed … reading how the students did with Sen. Rubio and Dana Loesch tonight feels a lot different than other such mass-murders. This feels like it has the momentum to carry to the election.

So I made the mistake of sleeping through the CNN town hall, because I had this feeling that the refs would kneecap the competition just to give the home team a fighting chance. Instead I hear Li’l Marco threw his political career is a ditch and then put two in its head, while Dana MuhGunz showed that she’s totally unused to this “empathy” thing she’s seen humans display.

and you know what… after watching what happened to Rubio, I’ll wager that the remainder of the GOP will eschew the notion of bringing the notion of gun safety up in any future town halls, or more likely never bother to even have any.

I think we’re looking at a legislative tsunami in 2018 that is going to make the GOP a political afterthought, granted they won’t go willingly but lets take a peek at what’s going on, boiled down to the essentials of what the GOP has fucked up:

Health Care
Immigration
Gun Safety
Infrastructure
Education
Consumer Protections
The Environment
Governing
Corruption
Treason
Stupidity
Racism
Sexism
Foreign Policy
Taxes

and they’ve managed to bring this all into the light in one fucking year…

If the Russians don’t invade and stage a coup, these guys are fucked and in about 6 years, the GOP will cease to exist as a political factor.

just mho… but people are sick and tired of giving these self-righteous fucks the benefit of the doubt.

Looking at my Facebook network of connections, I don’t see the Trumpers changing their minds. They’re as dug in as ever. Some rarely post anymore, but that doesn’t mean they’ve changed their minds.

There are several Congressional districts around this country which the Republicans won in the last election by only a few points. It’s not unreasonable to expect many of these to flip to Democrats in the midterms.

However, I remain to be convinced that the Trumpers who put Trump in office are going to diminish. They are as much America as any other group, and I am not convinced that the social changes which brought these folk to reject the decent candidates for the grotesque one are going to lessen any time soon.

And we notice that with the doubling down by the gun nuts in the wake of the latest mass shooting.

The History of Russian Involvement in America’s Race Wars

The point was, America was vulnerable and Russia/The USSR simply exploited it to promote their own interests. One can argue the morality of it, but that is what nations do.

They did not create the racial tensions that already existed in America, just as they did not create the slipshod, highly vulnerable electoral/political/media climate that existed in America at the start of this century.

I will be strongly pushing Comprehensive Background Checks with an emphasis on Mental Health. Raise age to 21 and end sale of Bump Stocks! Congress is in a mood to finally do something on this issue - I hope!

He knows he can safely come out in favor of these things because there is little or no chance of them actually being implemented but it will make him look like he is being reasonable and responsible.

2016 was the result of too many people thinking that they could ignore what the other side was doing, that things like equality would be resilient to opposing forces. Stoneman Douglas was the result of too many people giving into the idea that there’s nothing we can do about guns. Lots of people have learned their lesson on those fronts.

Now, there’s one more lesson to learn: Change won’t happen overnight, and it definitely won’t happen in November. Are they willing to fight for two more years before we can really change things? Are they willing to stick with it for the next decade?

In good news, initial unemployment claims continue to be extremely low, at levels not seen in decades when the workforce was much smaller. Even in the late nineties boom workers didn’t enjoy this much job security as we have seen in the last three years. As the graph shows, every recent recession was preceded by an increase in job losses, so at this point, there is still no reason to anticipate a near-term recession. Thanks Obama!

I’ve talked about that quite a bit. “The day the welfare checks stop” is a common scenario in racist/prepper literature and folklore. Not knowing what “minority” means, they imagine that there are endless masses of black people packed into the mysterious “no go zones” of the inner cities, waiting to pour out in mindless zombie swarms in search of loot.

He’s got a goddamned tweet for every situation. And his idiot supporters will believe anything he says because they’ve got the same attention span of a gnat. After all, Trump needed cue cards for how to attempt to show compassion and empathy (and still failed).

I also see that Marco Rubio was somehow getting credit for doing a town hall.

Why? That’s his goddamned job. That’s the bare minimum of being an elected official. GOPers have been ducking town halls since 2016 because they’re a perpetual shit show given Trump. Rubio’s answers show he’s trying to muddle through all while getting paid by the NRA.

She used her time, then was questioned by the mayor, then ordered removed from the city government meeting. The mayor accused her of lying about the concerns of citizens.

Fortunately in my village, we don’t have this sort of thing where Christian Fundamentalists have the need to “mark” public property with tax money or assert the power of the State when a person has a differing religious view.

Morning!

I didn’t get a chance to watch last night, and only followed for a bit here on LGF.

This morning I watch the opening of Morning Joke and of course Joke had to give some props to both Marco for attending the CNN Townhall and for Trump holding the White House talk.

Okay, that was a given.

I will give Marco credit for showing up too, but that is it. That is his job.

Trump…I don’t know how to feel but my instincts tells me it was another Trump produced reality show with a preordained decision to still play to the NRA and blame everything and anything on people and not guns.

While Marco took it on the chin, where was Rick Scott and Wayne LaPierre?

Scott is the one I hope gets damaged the most. I hope his stance on this costs the Florida Republicans for years.

And Wayne…where were you big guy? You sure can attend a room of your backers and talk tough…what are you scared of some kids that aren’t packing guns?

Maybe Trump grabbed you.

I hope this is all costing the NRA members and money. They claim 5 million Americans as members. The population of this country is 323 million. 5 million should not have the power they have in a democracy. They need to be put in their place as the minority they are.

Go Emma and all the rest of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School students. Keep on it…a lot of Americans are behind you.

Florida used to have a programme where an honourably discharged veteran would be sent to college at state expense to become a teacher.

If they are silent, perhaps they have the sense to be embarrassed. Keep pointing out the incompetence, not necessarily policy. Point out that Trump is not a dealmaker, how farmers are getting screwed by us not being in TPP, how they would be if NAFTA is repealed, etc.

And with all the fear of mental health, if you use vets are they going to be subject to testing to prove a bad situation won’t provoke PTSD where they either run scared or go off and start shooting indiscriminately thinking they are under attack in a war?

I am using the term military style weapon rather than assault weapon, because, to me, it gives a much clearer idea of the kind of weapon we want removed. An AR-15 is a military style weapon; the shotgun I have at home is not.

Equally important is to not let them get away with “Modern Sporting Rifles.”

Prior to WWI, most people were only familiar with either single shot or lever action rifles. Then the massive call up of 1917 happened and millions were introduced to bolt action rifles (1892 Krag to 1903 Springfield to 1917 Enfield). Add into the wave of surplus rifles (sold via the NRA) available after the war and before long the default hunting rifle in the US was a clone of the 1903 Mauser Springfield.

A similar thing started happening after Gulf 1 & the new model post 1977 NRA has tried to help it happen by pushing the idea of the AR platform as a “Modern Sporting Rifle”. The AR could be the basis of a semi decent hunting rifle but the vast majority of the ones on the market right now are simple semi-automatic clones of the M-4 carbine that are shit for hunting but excellent for tacti-cool accessories for people killing.

Wisconsin used to require that detachable box magazines for hunting could hold 5 rounds maximum. Other types could hold as many as the built in magazine held which still tended to max out at 10.

Something what would make everyone less unhappy and maybe solve part of the problem.

Just reduce any rifles legal magazine size to 10 and make it illegal to own higher capacity types. This effects the magazine only not the rifles themselves.

Have a buy back program for those magazines to soften the blow.

Enforce the hell out of it with large fines and jail time for trying to sell them.

Hunters don’t use large magazines so they won’t care.

The 2nd Amendment doesn’t say anything about magazines.

And that kind of thinking leads to nothing getting done. Is that they only way they can hunt? I doubt it. They can learn to live without one gun type.

There’s some of us that could come up with some pretty cool applications of a small amount of radioactive material. It would actually make a great heating source. But I’m not going to advocate for ending the ban on people owning that stuff.

Get rid of modern military weapons then. You can make that case. Try to extend it to all semi-autos and you’ll not get it done for a whole lot longer (because you’ll have to replace not just a majority of one party but basically one and one half parties) with a whole lot more deaths happening in the meantime.

The perfect is the enemy of good enough. That’s true here as well.

While I tend to agree and think it’s appropriate, the 1st amendment doesn’t say anything about how much paper you can run through your press either. Just bear in mind that there will still be arguments against it.

In the short term, the legality of California’s moves on magazines needs to be played out in the courts as well to see if the current SCOTUS will accept that as reasonable regulation.

And if we go back to “very early on” to define “the press” then it has to be the same standard for “news media?”

I don’t like the II Amendment argument that “arms” should be what they had in the XVIII Century, because the same logic could be applied to the I Amendment.

Actually, we’re trying to push back on the 1st Amendment in much the same way we’re pushing back on the 2nd. The massive megaphones rich people buy themselves courtesy of having a massive pile of cash, actively infringes on the individual right to free speech by drowning out all other voices. This is pretty fucking similar to the issue where a single asshole can acquire more firepower than the average Revolutionary War Regiment without even the requirement to haul his or her ass onto the village green a couple of times a year to drill and demonstrate basic proficiency.

Felt I had to come out of lerking mode and make a comment.

Pretty sure the 2nd Amendment was ment as a defensive measure for citizens.

I really don’t see the population of gun owners using assault rifle for day to day protection.

There really isn’t an assault weapon concealed and carry permit. Nor a glove compartment sized assault rifle. People are really not welcomed anywhere in public carrying their assault weapon, at least I haven’t seen them in Oklahoma.

Nor will the assault rifle be missed by the serious hunter.

The assault rifle is now used being used as an offensive measure by an offender to commit a crime.

Thanks for reading.

So basically for the law abiding citizen the assault rifle is used not for defense but a hobby. A hobby people can live without.

It’s the accidental shootings that will drive the largest numbers. Teachers are in schools to teach. To teach and watch children. To teach, watch and discipline children. To teach, watch, discipline and instill values in children. To teach, watch, discipline, instill values and make good citizens of children…With 20 children in a classroom, the amount of head space teachers devote to their fire arms is going to drop to 0 multiple times a day. That means guns are going to get left in bathrooms, fall out of holsters, or otherwise find their way into the hands of children and those hands are going to sometimes end up inadvertently killing themselves, a classmate or a teacher

I understand the concern, but it has to be dealt with, because there are plenty of people who think it can be done or who wonder if it can be done. If you try to answer “What if we armed teachers?” with “BAN ASSUALT WEAPONS” you’re not going to convince them. The answer is “Arming teachers will not solve it, because armed faculty will not deter a shooter since there was an armed guard at the school. And there are a whole host of issues associated with teachers being armed. The only good solution is to return to when assault weapons were banned.”

What happened last night and happened today demonstrate that it’s not about protecting fucking anyone. They can’t even feign sympathy, because the dead people and the survivors matter less than their competence fantasy. It’s exactly the same rhythm that defines other variety of reactionaries surrounding Trump: baying at the world for deference, commanding compliance, doubt is an existential threat.

Of course they’ve fallen in line with the next rhetorical jump to the “Deep State” and everything is “socialism”—plus open accusations of treason for everyone—the one constant is that no one else actually matters.

Sometimes you have to chuckle, though. My wife is a care giver. One of her clients on Monday mistakenly scratched Monday and Tuesday off of her calendar on Monday. She had a hair appointment on Wednesday. For seven straight hours she was picking up her calendar and saying “when am I going to my appointment?” Sad, but also heartwarming in a way—that contact and physical touch is so meaningful still.

These people do not care about the 2nd amendment as a right.

The minute they feel they have enough license to create a biased structure that protects their own, they will figure out how the disarm people who are not part of their reactionary sphere. Their cultural reading of “who is a threat” and “who can be shot by police or a vigilante and it is deserved” points to how this distinction—the right to carry unquestioned versus the a priori assumption of threat—is already in place culturally, and in the back end of use-of-force laws like “Stand Your Ground.”

It’s not about rights, it’s about dyeing the nation in reactionary colors.

These kids grew up on the internet. They’re not afraid of getting flamed, they laugh it off.

And the ‘adults’ (using the term loosely here) can’t go after high school kids like they do Democrats, because they’re high school kids. D’Souza and Hoft were early examples of this, and the pushback was swift and effective. It cost them real money.

Shuster and his team are playing brilliantly…the best he ever has. The USOC has given him shit for years, for being overweight (he then lost 35 pounds), for not being good enough (he wins the play downs every Olympic cycle) and they just treat him like shit. The USOC puts teams together, they are not like in Canada where they play on the teams with whom they desire and from my understanding Shuster and George (his 3rd) don’t especially like each other, they are professional curling partners. They got the job done (beat the Canadians twice, an Olympic first) and as much as I like Team Edin (the Swedes they will be playing for Gold), I am totally on the US train to gold.

Another favorite sticking point of mine: you can be an idealist and a cynic at the same time if you have no self-reflection.

The NRA both loves the story that justifies gun sales, but also loves the story that the world is full of the totally depraved and thus requires hard men and lethal responses.

re: #301 dangerman

its also interesting that cpac and nra are almost being promoted as one and the same and that theres not much more to “conservatism” than this

“Conservative” means looking backwards, toward tradition and existing norms and mores.

But the semiotic fuckery is: the past only exists within the frame an individual in the present puts on it, and you can even fabricate a past to justify and position as “conservative.”

Which is exactly the Orwellian trench these people are digging. CPAC in general and the NRA in specific are intentionally re-writing the past, and thus what defines “America” and doing so in a way that cuts out most Americans from legitimacy. And the specific policy prescriptions they make reinforce the distinction by allocating money to “real Americans,” undermining equality of law (hence the love of summary execution, hence the love of legal penalties handed out so unevenly that equality under law is an on-paper proposition).

This distinction—we decided what the rules-as-written are, day by day, to our advantage and the detriment of others—defines their newly-invented exegesis, their gnostic reading of the Constitution and the Founders’ commentaries on liberty…and who gets to kill and who deserves to die.

No one else really matters is the repeated theme.

The president is uninterested in governing or doing much of anything beyond watching the news, tweeting about what he sees on the news, and cheating at golf. Kushner got the gig because Trump only knows how to work with family - he’s never had a “real job” (meaning a position in a company where either he or his father was not the CEO or where their name wasn’t literally on the building) - so rather than finding someone competent and without conflicting interests, Trump turns to his son in law (I’ll avoid the joke about Kushner being the one guy that can do what Trump can’t, but ya know…). And it’s not like Trump really cares about conflicts of interest, because at the end of the day, it’s all a scam for the family to get rich.

My hope is that between being a immediate family member of the president and a high ranking White House official with, dubious (at best), security clearance, Kushner can’t even use the bathroom without a Secret Service body man present.

But they’re suddenly going to find a 20-40% “bonus” for teachers to arm themselves? Not gonna happen. And if this is supposed to be out of the federal coffers, then where is Trump gonna find the money? Probably from cutting some school program that his base thinks is “a waste of money.”

BTW, I was trying to imply that it wasn’t a bad thing that my kid had to go see the counselor. We’ve been trying to tell kids for years to report bullies, kids that look like they might hurt themselves, and kids that might actually want to hurt others. They’ve made all sorts of commercials about it. Cartoon Network even got involved. The abuse has been minimal, if it exists. On the other hand, bullying has been going down from what I’ve heard.

My son kind of fits the profile of someone who might do things to himself, and he knows it (think Daria). He doesn’t do it, but you’re going to get some false positives from kids who actually do care.

After a three-year investigation by federal, state and local law enforcement authorities, 21 alleged members and associates of Mara Salvatrucha, commonly called MS-13, were taken into custody Wednesday by the Los Angeles Metropolitan Task Force on Violent Gangs (LAMTFVG), law enforcement officials announced in a news conference.

The 21 arrested individuals are among 44 alleged MS-13 gang members who face federal charges, including the former head of the entire gang in Los Angeles and 12 senior leaders of the gang. Of the 44 facing charges, 20 were already in custody and three are considered to be fugitives.

Law enforcement officials say the dozen high-ranking gang members had formed a de facto leadership council for the gang because no one person was willing to take on the top role in the wake of ongoing scrutiny by law enforcement.

Thinking about that town hall last night… any politician, Dem or GOP, who didn’t pay attention to what happened there and the mood is a damn fool. This was not a room full of thousands of democrats. This was a room full of thousands of people of both parties who have come together over a single issue and that is to ban military weapons from civilian hands. Period.

When Marco kept going back to “we are so divided, have to work together” blah blah, he was standing in the middle of an auditorium filled with people who were working together and coming to agreement on this issue. It was this agreement that resulted in every bullshit argument from him and Dana to fall flat on its ass. They weren’t cheering for the Dem Senator and Rep because they were democrats. They were cheering because they, and Sheriff Isreal, were the ones proposing sensible actual solutions, not just more bullshit which was seen right through. The proof of this was the cheers for a heroic teacher who said she voted for Trump and was a supporter but called total bullshit on the arming teachers crap. This wasn’t about politics, it was about taking action against the insanity of our gun culture.

That wasn’t a gun free zone either.

It didn’t matter that they had highly trained and proficient USSS agents and police officers in multiple security rings.

They were guarding Reagan - all of those in his detail were willing to take a bullet for Reagan. They were willing to shoot it out with anyone who got in their way that posed a risk.

And yet someone wasn’t deterred or prevented. Reagan nearly died that day.

So spare me that more guns and hardening schools will make people safer. It simply isn’t true.

Fewer guns will mean fewer gun deaths and lower crime.

Last week, they had to evacuate a whole neighborhood because when the city cleaned out somebody’s sewer, a few hours later they found out that they had torn a natural gas line that had been routed IN the sewer line, when people for blocks around smelled the gas, which was travelling through the sewer.

Or that all the various federal, state and local LE personnel in the State are just sitting around drinking coffee and eating donuts rather than going after these dangerous criminals?
