Attacking the FBI as the NRAs Wayne LaPierre did today is sure a strange tact.

I hope this really pisses of the entire law enforcement community (minus the gun nut, wingnut types) and they build pressure on Republicans, the NRA and the media to make some big changes in gun laws, etc.

Grandpa LePen is a Holocaust denier.

I’ve always kind of known of LePen, I remember he ran for president of France when I was in college, I want to say. But I’ve never known much about him, reading his biography, it reads like a bad take on a Hemmingway character. Orphaned at 14 when his father’s boat was destroyed by a mine (1942). Rejected at 16 for the French Forces of the Interior. So he went to law school where he sold a monarchist magazine (the fuck?). Then joined the Foreign Legion and made it to Indochina just in time for France to get out. And managed a presidential campaign in the 60s based on rehabilitating the collaborationists.

I’ll have to find it later, but the theory is that he’s so dirty they actually don’t want him on their side. Not only could you not trust anything he actually says, but he could end up taking the blame for everything (think Ollie North), and he’s more useful being the one guy they bust hard.

Nicole Wallace just took a major dump on Manafort.

She said that everyone in Washington Politics knew prior to Trump even running that Manafort had a real sleazy client list and that he was dirty. She said she knew that from the McCain campaign in 2008.

So it is looking more and more like Manafort IS the connection to the Russians from the Trump campaign.

Trump: “I never had anything to do with the Russians. There was no collusion!!!

What Trump didn’t say: That was all done through Paul Manafort.

I think we are getting real close to Mueller driving a stake into the evil heart of The Trump Presidency.

The second he gets Gates or Manafort, or someone we may not know yet, to make the connections of Russia > Manafort > Trump campaign…it wouldn’t surprise me Mueller brings charges against the campaign and Trump.

We are approaching one year of Mueller on the case. Might there be a BIG anniversary?

The amazing thing is, 80,000 votes or so in three states go the other way, and we have a completely different conversation.

Well, yes and no. We’d have a different president and different policies, but I don’t know how different the national tone and the body politic would be.

If Hillary were President, the howling hordes of the far right would be being whipped to a frenzy every day by FOX and other cult media. They would be in attack mode against the President and America itself, instead of attacking the FBI and media and trying to sweep the indefensible under the rug. We’d still have over 62 million people in America who were perfectly fine with an evil, self-centred king, and we’d still be hearing from Trump every day on CNN, and they would still treat him with deference and forget about his failings after a couple of days. They’d be attacking Hillary every day, instead of remembering to do it every couple of weeks or so.

Whoever won in 2016, we would still have to deal with the reality that at least 20% of Americans, and over 40% of the voting public, would happily send you and I to the camps because American media has taught them to hate for fun and convinced them that their hate is perfectly acceptable and normal.

The fact Gates wouldn’t listen to him (that’s the only conclusion I can draw from firing a guy who was trying to negotiate a plea deal for you), is just another reminder that this is truly Stupid Watergate.

Maybe they had all just heard this news:

Mama grizzly Sarah Palin is roaring mad over her estranged son-in-law’s bid to get her daughter, Bristol, to pay his legal fees in the couple’s bitter divorce, radaronline.com has learned exclusively!

In papers filed in Texas’ Travis County, Bristol’s baby daddy — Medal of Honor recipient Dakota Meyer — asked the judge to force Bristol to cover his “attorney fees, expenses and costs through the trial.”

“Sarah is furious!” dished a source close to the former GOP vice presidential candidate.

“What’s really beyond any reasonable expectation is Dakota’s belief that Bristol would EVER give him any money for this divorce!” said an insider.

We wouldn’t have had another attempt at repealing Obamacare, we wouldn’t have had a joke of a tax bill, we wouldn’t have the fake DACA crisis (created because Trump unilaterally rescinded the program), we wouldn’t have had the Muslim ban and it’s related fiasco. We would have a more moderate US Supreme Court rather than the polarized one we have now. And we wouldn’t (one would hope) be careening from one scandal to the next with the occasional stop for a mild constitutional crisis.

So, yeah, I think it’d be completely different. That said, I’m not sure it’d be better. A lot of what you mentioned would still be festering under the surface and a lot of people wouldn’t want to talk about it in polite company. And it could have come back around in 2020 to be very bad, not good (you have to go back to FDR to find one party winning four straight presidential elections).

I totally agree. I was just saying the deputies know the situation with having to take on a guy with a 30 round AR15 semi-auto. And they were hesitant.

Why would anyone expect a teacher to be brave enough to do the job Trump and the NRA want them to take on.

How about we have Wayne LaPierre be our first test of how well this would work using paint guns, one a semi auto rifle type and one pistol type.

Set up a school for the test. Put Wayne with a concealed pistol somewhere in the school. Add all the noise of kids changing classes when an alarm goes off and gunshots are heard. Screaming kids run all over the place in panic.

Wayne has to work his way through all the commotion and try to take down the guy with the rifle.

If Wayne does not get the “perp” and he gets shot instead, and/or Wayne hits any of the students and still doesn’t get his target he has to resign as the head of the NRA and the NRA has to change their stance on assault rifles and background checks.

How about it Wayne? You up for that?

Some members of the tribe say they should build their houses on stilts to keep them above the water. Other say the proper term is piles, not stilts, so why should they listen to people who don’t know the right terminology.

Other tribes who live on higher ground wonder why the lowland tribe doesn’t just move.

Works for me. But he would never go for it as he KNOWS he would fail and fail miserably thus disproving their good guy with a gun scenario. I am wondering how they are going to spin the actual test of a good guy with a gun failure.

just a heads up:

Do you have a Instant Pot multicooker in your home? You may want to check if it is one of a few listed as faulty.

An Instant Pot user posted photos on Facebook saying that after using it just 4 times the bottom of the machine melted and burned some of the wires instead.

Scripps station KTNV in Las Vegas reached out to Instant Pot about the claims and it turns out this isn’t an isolated incident. “We have received a small number of reports the Gem 8-in-1 multicooker overheating, resulting in localized melting damage to the underside of the product,” said Instant Pot.

There’s no official recall for the cooker but the company says if your Instant Pot has one of the following numbers on the bottom it should be returned.

Pardon me for a dumb question but does anyone know the “mental disease” the shooter was diagnosed with?

When ever these mass shootings happen, I always hear “he was crazy.” This is especially true when the shooter is a white guy. It’s a trick they use to separate themselves from the shooter, and to relieve themselves of any liability. Because you can’t do anything about a crazy person. If you can dismiss him as crazy, rather than as a rational actor who decided he wanted to kill people, then you don’t have to consider that there are rational people who may decide they want to kill people with easily available guns. If you don’t have to consider that, if it’s either responsible gun owner or crazy person, then you don’t really need to consider gun control beyond background checks for mental illness.

It’s quite obvious, Republicans and right wingers in general prefer gun control when liberals or Muslims or any marginalized group are unarmed and become sheep open for slaughter.

It’s definitely more than gun nuts. People don’t like to believe a normal person would be capable of something so bad. It’s also why you often hear some bad action “was just a mistake” and “they didn’t mean to hurt anyone” (often heard with drunk driving). I think on some level it’s because if that guy is capable of it, maybe that means I am capable of it, or the guy behind me in line at the grocery store is capable of it. And that can be terrifying. So it’s better to wish it away as a crazy person, and that way you don’t have to inconvenience anyone with a real discussion about the easy access to weapons that we have in this country.

re: #254 goddamnedfrank

The overwhelming emphasis on “stranger danger” is an ingrained evolutionary cognitive bias in human perception that has become less and less applicable to modern first world living, where the saying “familiarity breeds contempt” seems far more apropos.

Yeah, there’s that bias, but this is cultural thing. The reversibility of the proposition—person did X, now it turns out they were Not Of The Body—is where this is all about excuses to not self-examine. As in every “Bob, God told me I should fuck your wife” religion having a built in “…but everybody else wouldn’t ask so pretty before fucking your wife, because it’s total depravity out there.”

Bertold Brecht

“If sharks were men,” Mr. Keuner was asked by his landlady’s little girl, “would they be nicer to the little fishes?”

“Certainly,” he said. “If sharks were men, they would build enormous boxes in the ocean for the little fish, with all kinds of food inside, both vegetable and animal. They would take care that the boxes always had fresh water, and in general they would make all kinds of sanitary arrangements. If, for example, a little fish were to injure a fin, it would immediately be bandaged, so that it would not die and be lost to the sharks before its time. So that the little fish would not become melancholy, there would be big water festivals from time to time; because cheerful fish taste better than melancholy ones.

“There would, of course, also be schools in the big boxes. In these schools the little fish would learn how to swim into the sharks’ jaws. They would need to know geography, for example, so that they could find the big sharks, who lie idly around somewhere. The principal subject would, of course, be the moral education of the little fish. They would be taught that it would be the best and most beautiful thing in the world if a little fish sacrificed itself cheerfully and that they all had to believe the sharks, especially when the latter said they were providing for a beautiful future. The little fish would be taught that this future is assured only if they learned obedience. The little fish had to beware of all base, materialist, egotistical and Marxist inclinations, and if one of their number betrayed such inclinations they had to report it to the sharks immediately.

“If sharks were men, they would, of course, also wage wars against one another, in order to conquer other fish boxes and other little fish. The wars would be waged by their own little fish. They would teach their little fish that there was an enormous difference between themselves and the little fish belonging to the other sharks. Little fish, they would announce, are well known to be mute, but they are silent in quite different languages and hence find it impossible to understand one another. Each little fish that, in a war, killed a couple of other little fish, enemy ones, silent in their own language, would have a little order made of seaweed pinned to it and be awarded the title of hero.

“If sharks were men, there would, of course, also be art. There would be beautiful pictures, in which the sharks’ teeth would be portrayed in magnificent colors and their jaws as pure pleasure gardens, in which one could romp about splendidly. The theaters at the bottom of the sea would show heroic little fish swimming enthusiastically into the jaws of sharks, and the music would be so beautiful that to the accompaniment of its sounds, the orchestra leading the way, the little fish would stream dreamily into the sharks’ jaws, lulled by the most agreeable thoughts.

“There would also be a religion, if sharks were men. It would preach that little fish only really begin to live properly in the sharks’ stomachs.

“Furthermore, if sharks were men there would be an end to all little fish being equal, as is the case now. Some would be given important offices and be placed above the others. Those who were a little bigger would even be allowed to eat up the smaller ones. That would be altogether agreeable for the sharks, since they themselves would more often get bigger bites to eat. And the bigger little fish, occupying their posts, would ensure order among the little fish, become teachers, officers, engineers in box construction, etc.

“In short, if sharks were men, they would for the first time bring culture to the ocean.”

The NRA was going after the FBI after ruby Ridge (and to be sure…they kinda deserved it) and kept it up when Louis Freeh became director of the FBI and said he would enforce the strictest gun laws congress could pass.

The decline of the NRA tracks with the GOP pretty well.
time.com

The 1930s crime spree of the Prohibition era, which still summons images of outlaws outfitted with machine guns, prompted President Franklin Roosevelt to make gun control a feature of the New Deal. The NRA assisted Roosevelt in drafting the 1934 National Firearms Act and the 1938 Gun Control Act, the first federal gun control laws. These laws placed heavy taxes and regulation requirements on firearms that were associated with crime, such as machine guns, sawed-off shotguns and silencers. Gun sellers and owners were required to register with the federal government and felons were banned from owning weapons. Not only was the legislation unanimously upheld by the Supreme Court in 1939, but Karl T. Frederick, the president of the NRA, testified before Congress stating, “I have never believed in the general practice of carrying weapons. I do not believe in the general promiscuous toting of guns. I think it should be sharply restricted and only under licenses.

I posted about that survivor earlier today - TL;DR version is that he wanted to read an extensive speech, but CNN said due to time/format constraints, he’d be limited to asking a question. His father pulled him out of the townhall in response.

So yes…I was already seeing trumpchumps pounce on the story with their usual breathless conspiracy theories, so it doesn’t surprise me in the least that Cheeto Benito’s seized onto it as well.

Colton Haab doesn’t seem to have a Twitter account, however, so I’m not sure how he (or more importantly, his father) will react. I hope they don’t allow themselves to be used as NRA PR pieces (and as far as I’m aware, Colton originally said he wanted to see more armed guards as well as gun control measures).

And this proves you can’t just have one cop at a school. You have to have a unit at each school. And it proves how pointless it would be for teachers, because their first task would be to protect students, not group together to challenge the shooter.

They’ve kind of halfway stumbled onto a legit point, though their approach to it is typically disingenuous and shit faced. Our society, yes even liberal society, demonstrably does get a lot more vocally upset about the loss of white kids’ lives, with missing blonde white girls having set off multiple nationwide panics. Also, handguns are statistically represented far more in every type of firearms related crime and we should do a lot more to regulate the shit out of them. But you’re right, the last thing the GOP and NRA are interested in is fixing real problems and there’s nothing they love better than to blame minorities instead of the systemic dysfunction & structural racism that actually underlies their disproportionate violent mortality rate.

317
ObserverArt  Feb 22, 2018 • 6:13:49pm

Just had my first major glitch with Directv Now online streaming TV.

They had listed the Columbus Blue Jackets NHL game on their guide on screen tonight. I watched a game on Tuesday night…a home game and everything was fine.

Tonight’s game is a road game and it shows on the online guide and when I select the channel I see the opening graphic of Blue Jackets and Philly Flyers logos, etc. Click to watch and I get a Cleveland Cavs game.

I suspect they have issues with regional sports channels that sometimes show games and sometimes don’t if there are rights or black-out issues. I think they have a problem getting the proper feed or rights for the feed.

So, I go online and fight online chat tech for a good hour and it was just plain stupid. The guy wasn’t paying attention to what I was saying about the guide showing the game and the intro graphic being for the game. He kept saying it wasn’t shown on Fox Sports Ohio, it was on the NHL channel. I told him if he looks at any TV listing source he would see there was no games on NHL channel until later tonight, a west coast game.

So, I had to play the try-this-try-that game and all it did was get me frustrated. I told him I want someone to contact me by phone to explain what is going on as chat was useless. They do not show a phone line to contact.

It’s sad, because so far the regular channels have been good. I like the picture, the FireTV and all.

I think they are too new and need to work out a lot of bugs. I just don’t appreciate being a beta test customers.

Edit to add: Oh of course… a new thread after I type all that. I guess it is par for the night. Sigh.

I qualify, and I’m more than willing to weigh in on this BS. First, few, if any, of these gun nuts and NRA aficionados know many, if any, black people. This BS is meant to drive a wedge between the blacks and whites in the Democratic Party and to promote race-based divisiveness in general. Second, since the first thing I mentioned is the case, they’re guessing and trying to speak for us. Third, they’re stupid as hell because we know the game they’re playing, and we’re not buying their BS. The very fact that we don’t vote the way they’d like us to vote, even though they’ve created the “Democrats are holding blacks on the Democrat Plantation” meme, should tell them that we’re not as stupid as they think we are. They’ve been playing this ”Democrat Plantation” BS for years, and they’re still struggling to get most of us to vote for their politicians.
