Thursday Night Songwriter Showcase: James McMurtry at Paste Studio NYC Live

Watching this live performance by James McMurtry for Paste Magazine, I was struck by how under-rated he is as a guitarist, because it’s no small feat to sing with this much passion and keep that 12-string guitar engine going like he does. Playing 12-string guitar all by itself can be exhausting (I speak from experience).

And the lyrics, man, the lyrics.

I’m really diggin’ on James. I’ve been playing his 2013 YouTube live concert from Michigan. And you’re right, his guitar work is real good. He can rock, he can be folky, he can be country…just plain good.

And his songs are very wordy and yet he does his thing and misses nothing on the guitar.

I’ve posted this before, but here is the YouTube show I like if anyone wants to ever save the link. It is an hour 40 minutes, but all worth it. His band is pretty damn good too.

Go, Illinois, go, Tahera Rahman:

‘My America, too.’ An Iowa TV reporter is making history as the first to wear a hijab on air

Tahera Rahman whispers the lines of her script as the Local 4 newsroom bustles around her.

With a few seconds to air, Rahman blots her lipstick and secures a runaway piece of hair under her bright white hijab. She straightens the decorative lace cascading down from the headscarf and gently nestles her microphone into its crochet work.

The newsroom quiets. The camera’s light flashes. Rahman is live.

After two years producing the station’s evening news, Rahman recently moved into an on-air role. She’s “living her dream” and, in the process, she has become the first woman to wear a hijab while reporting full-time for a mainstream American TV station, according to the Muslim American Women in Media group.

Edit: I misread, and it’s hard to figure it out, but it was Illinois, not Iowa. Still awesome.

Except the point is that, in situations like this, we cannot rely on the government to be ready for an event like a mass shooting. We cannot. Offense always has the upper hand. That’s why the answer is to remove military style weapons.

Josh Barro

@jbarro
If we’re going to rely on the state to be our primary line of defense against mass shooters (which we should) then it’s weird to shrug at the failures of the Broward Sheriff’s Dept. This is their job — we should expect better.

9:11 PM - Feb 22, 2018

Here is what we should expect Josh.

People in the business know when they are up against a guy determined to take people down with his assault rifle…and you have your 9-shot pistol and are facing something you didn’t think you’d be doing today, the odds are not good. It’s not as easy everyone seems to try to make all this.

It’s an “Oh Shit” time Josh. And in those times the guy with the AR if competent will be very dangerous.

I think everyone would be better off without the assault rifles or at the very least make them the toughest guns to register and only after almost military grade training before you get to have one. And add insurance and a bond to have it.

That will make them only in the hands of people that want the training and the responsibility and begin to take them out of the hands that see them only ass bad-ass toys.

That is what should we expect. IMO.

“Knowing how to operate software is for the little people.”

I worked for a guy who would make the office secretary print out all of his inbox messages, deliver them to him so he could hand write responses, and then give them back to the secretary to type it into the reply messages.

He was a total dick to the far-too-understanding woman that used to put together his proposal packages. He’d fuss with them until 20 minutes before they had to be delivered to the U of M, so she’d have to fly through the changes, and one of the office guys would have to run every red light for the 5 mile delivery. The one time that she asked to leave early because she had family in town from fucking JAPAN, he pulled that five minute bullshit on her. She’d been sitting there waiting for it all afternoon. All the rest of us in the office kept urging her to get out of the office - we’d stand by her - but she couldn’t do it, and the boss knew it and shafted her every time. I was so glad to quit that job.

lawhawk  Feb 22, 2018 • 7:16:08pm

re: #29 ObserverArt

I’ve noted this before, but it bears repeating.

Beat cops have a level of training to deal with most situations, but they’re also trained that when they come into an active shooter to protect themselves and control the situation until the cavalry comes - and it comes in the form of SWAT/ESU. These are the guys with the heavy weapons, tactics, and are proficient in dealing with active shooter situations.

When civilians have a problem, they call cops.
When cops face these situations, they call in SWAT.

This officer will live with the guilt for the rest of his life knowing or thinking he could have done more. He just as easily could have ended up dead too.

The answer is not arming teachers. That’s just more people with guns that cops have to clear and delay response to stop the bad guy.

It’s just that the GOP/NRA don’t want to do anything, so they throw this out there knowing some places might take up this offer - all in the name of gun sales.

It is security theater.

You’d think searching for “Patton Oswalt, frustrated, Republican, and comedians would get too many results to be useful, but I found the bit I was looking for. (Link goes to RawStory)

General gist: Angry Republican comics expected to be the new kings of the world, and Oswalt traced some of it back to pre-WW2, when Nazis went after Jewish entertainers particularly enthusiastically because of professional jealousy.

Asking a supposedly well functioning adult to charge into an active shooter situation by themselves, against an unknown number of assailants, with the statistically likelihood of having to face and kill an AR-15 armed kid, is asking a lot. It’s asking even more if the responsible adult has kids of their own. No matter what, the person you are going into that situation is not going to be the same person that comes out, if you come out at all.

Studies have shown that the one thing that motivates soldiers to fight when the bullets start flying isn’t a sense of duty or patriotic love of country, it’s nothing more than the basic drive to protect the soldiers serving next to them. If these armed officers are ever going to be effective at patrolling schools, which is a ridiculous thing to even contemplate when we could obviate most of the problem with a focus on strict gun control, they’ll need to patrol in groups of two to four and they’re going to have to train and bond together for months the same way soldiers going to war have to.

The multimedia artist Martha Rosler created a series of prints called House Beautiful: Bringing the War Home that first spanned from 1967-1972 and again from 2004-2008, where she would juxtapose images from the Cold War, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan inside idyllic American living rooms. I feel that with the alarming, almost exponential increase in mass shootings that her work has been prophetic in some way, a harbinger of a cumulative metastatic cancer that has now infected our society at nearly every level. That in repeatedly trying to find external loci for our aggression we somehow caused that aggression, fueled by the facility for mass casualty our ubiquitous access to guns provide, to bleed back more and more into our own quotidian existence.

That is a very common sports injury knee tune up. Sometimes a player will be back in a few days if it was fairly easy.

It is an amazing procedure. I used to do some work for Grant Hospital SportsMed when they first started to get it down.

The one doctor showed me a VCR tape of an operation. Because the whole thing is done by video. It was amazing. And that was many years ago.

Edit to add: I was checking, depending on the amount of work needed on the knee common recovery is anywhere from two to six weeks. Often people can walk without a cain or assistance in a day or two. The knee needs to rebuild the fluid.

I’m not saying he should still be on the job, I am saying that it is fundamentally an insane job. Most people who agree to be school resource officers are probably like most missile silo launch officers, thinking that when the time comes they’ll be able to make the decision but as a practical reality that they’ll probably never have to. I know you have a much more informed perspective on what that experience is really like since you were a SAC pilot but it’s still a testament to our collective dystopian reality that it’s actually a job at all.

But damn, what a choice he had to make and what guilt he will live with for the rest of his life. Once the guy got in, though, protecting it involves police tactics, which starts with waiting for backup.

Connie Schultz and David Maranis (both Pulitzer Prize Authors/professors) are on the Brian Williams 11th Hour show and they are discussing the student movement.

Both are saying it is odd that the older generation (boomers) are the ones letting the students down since many were the youth protesters of their day.

Connie (being from Cleveland - The Plain Dealer writer) brought up Kent State and some of the same reactions from local Kent/Akron/Cleveland/Canton people to the protesters then and how there were letters to local papers as venomous as the Tweets we see today.

Maranis said the kids will do well because almost all good change protest are led by youth because they are basically pure in their intentions and unencumbered by the politics.

For one thing, they have no ‘access’ to protect.

Several of my friends named their cars. My Prius was named Katsumi, My RAV4 was named Batou, and my Forester is named Aramaki.

I don’t name cars either, but I consider that less weird as one names things like boats, trains and horses.

Do you suppose Erick will have a tea party with all his guns in attendance? He can call them all by their names and have the “girl guns” wear pretty hats.
Naming guns is weird.”

Erickson lives in the same middle GA city that I live in. He’s a deacon at a rather prominent church here. What pisses me off about his tweet is that his wife has cancer and he’s on social media talking about buying and naming guns. Plus, he has kids he could be spending time with. I’m quite sure they’re worried about their mom while he goes on social media and acts the fool. Erickson is an awful person and has always been an awful person.

I agree with all of you, it’s a tough call, and I don’t know how Broward County is set up. In Austin, we have Austin Independent School Police, Austin PD, Travis County Sheriff, Airport Police, and Park Police, all pretty independent of each other.

The fact that the Broward County chief was able to suspend the two officers on-site indicates to me that the LEO’s were on rotation to that school rather than being full time school Resource Officers.

If that is the case, they were fully trained LEO’s and certainly knew the risk, including the possibility that some zipperhead could walk into the school, yank out an AR and start shooting kids.

I’m sorry, but your job is to run to the sound of the guns and stop the shooter. Full stop. If you take him down, good for you. If he takes you down, so be it. Either way, that’s the job, and you did your job.

I’m sorry, but when you are charged with protecting children, your life is forfeit in extremis.

It’s you goddamned job.

Damn! Just damn! Ms. Fuentes saw right through his BS. I’m glad she shared her impression of him with the rest of us. I’m still saying to myself, “Damn. Just Damn.” Trump needed written talking points when he talked to Ms. Fuentes, and just the thought of talking points being necessary for a president to have to talk to victims of a tragedy is a damn shame.

Correct.

The Russian athletes allowed to compete at this Winter Olympics are competing under the auspices of the IOC (since the IOC suspended the Russian Olympic Committee back in December for massive amounts of doping and corruption going back many years, but in particular for what they did for the 2014 Sochi Games), which means they are represented by the Olympics flag and anthem.

Robert Weaver, another failure in extreme vetting in the Trump administration. I guess Weaver knew someone closely connected to the Yam, had worked on the Yam’s campaign, or knew the Yam in some way or another himself. These appear to be the main criteria for employment in the Yam’s administration.
