What we really need to do is to set our schools up like our prisons. The real goal is to eliminate public education. The more funding mandated to go into school security, the less that goes into education.

Conservatives and libertarians have been after gutting public education for a long time. They have zero intent of raising a dime in taxes to pay for their proposed solution of turning schools into armed camps.

Shooting threat against Scottsblluff (Nebr.) High School determined by Scottsbluff police to be a hoax. According to the police captain of the Scottsbluff Police Department, several police departments across the country are trying to determine where the hoax threat on social media came from.

The threat itself was posted to Twitter, and references “SHS,” which many believed to be Scottsbluff High School.

According to the Center For Responsive Politics, as of February 1, 2018, Adrian Smith has received over $59,000 from gun rights groups. Deb Fischer and Ben Sasse have received $33,000 and $23,000, respectively, from these groups.

In February of 2017 all three voted in favor of HJ Resolution 40. What did HJ Resolution 40 do? It made it easier for people with mental illnesses to buy guns.

The thing that really amazes me is how casually the gun nuts talk about arming teachers. There’s no thought in to all of the time and money that would have to go in to supplying the weapons, setting up an armory to store them, training the teachers in the various tactics and then keeping them up to date or any of that kinda important shit, and then combining that with their teaching job. Nope, it’s just ‘let them pack heat and shoot it out as needed’, nothing more than that. As if a gun and its use is just another requirement that can easily be added to the job of being a teacher.

What happens when a teacher is careless and a suicidal child gets a hold of their gun? What happens when a gun is dropped, discharges and hits a child? What happens if a teacher shoots at an armed kid, misses, pierces the wall behind him and kills a kid in the next classroom? These things will happen. There’s no denying the fact that history proves that the more guns there are in the hands of people, the more often ‘accidents’ happen and people are wounded or die.

Making guns a part of a kid’s everyday school life is no solution to this problem.

That’s because they don’t care about any of that.

The NRA’s donors (gun manufacturers) only care about one thing: Selling guns. Their congressvarmints who accept money (as noted in comment #16, our congressvarmints are cheap to buy) only want to be elected and take that money.

That’s it. There is nothing else to this. Everything they propose (whether it might work or not) is predicated on the idea of selling more guns.

A gun is an incredibly well-designed and constructed piece of machinery. If you properly maintain and care for a gun, it will last for generations. That means the market becomes saturated unless you can open up a new market to sell more guns.

Thus the only proposals from the NRA are to open new markets (teachers) or complain about treaties (such as those that prevent US gun manufacturers from dumping guns around the world).

It is also why there are attacks on nations such as Australia (their laws can’t work here) or France (they’ll just use a truck).

The entire point is to sell more guns, and they will misdirect, lie, or buy politicians as necessary to do that.

Look ahead to the upcoming mid-term elections. In Florida, as well as every other state, there are many high school seniors who are currently 18. And there are many more who are now 17 but will turn 18 before the November elections. These students will certainly have a major impact on the local, State, and national elections.

The are pissed and will come out and vote.

Every politician who opposes any type of gun control legislation should be terrified of this voting block.

On top of this, many currently aged 15-17 will be able to vote in 2020.

These “kids” are articulate, involved, and and have a clear understanding of the issues.

They will be the heroes in moving gun control legislation forward.

Also just imagine being an insurance underwriter trying to figure out exactly what kinds of incidents a district wide policy for armed school teachers should cover and how much it will cost? That first article (the drag queen one) is about Sheriff Israel of Broward County, Fla., where the GOP candidate who ran against him three years ago put up contradictory to each other YouTube videos to try to smear him.

They are being pushed again by SMOTI, because despite a request by Sheriff Israel, YouTube won’t take them down. (At this point, I think he should sue for libel, but that’s me.)

Wonkette notes that the woman in the videos might be a “crisis actor,” since it would appear the GOP and the NRA are in crisis right now.

For decades, the Entertainment Software Rating Board has rated video games based on their content. For even longer, the MPAA has done the same for movies.

President Trump doesn’t seem to know that either exists. During a White House meeting on Thursday, Trump suggested “ratings systems” for violent video games and movies, which he said play a role in warping young minds and contribute to mass shootings.

Moreover, mentally unstable doesn’t really qualify as “mass murderer.” Mass murder actually takes some planning and work, something an “unstable” person can’t really do well.

Right-wingers claiming the guy is “crazy” as well: As my mother, the psychologist and airport musician (those are related fields) notes, “crazy is a technical term for use by professionals only.”

At some point we’re just going to have to call them “liars.” They don’t care.

At some point we’re going to have to equate conservatism with a blood sacrifice religion.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has commuted the death sentence of a man who masterminded the murder of his mother and brother after the inmate’s father, who barely survived the crime, pleaded for his killer son’s life to be spared.

Whitaker was convicted of conspiring to murder his parents and brother for a family inheritance. Whitaker’s roommate was the actual triggerman. Lots of Bible quotes around the Clemency Board’s hearings and decision on this. So, there is mercy; for white people from upstanding, financially solvent families, severely depleted though they may be. Trash and “others” still get the needle.

I am opposed to the death penalty in nearly all cases. (In certain instances under the UCMJ, such as compelling surrender or espionage it would be a tougher decision.)

That said, in any case where a judge grants mercy to a convicted criminal, it is a suspension of justice for the victims of the crime.

And in the case of a clemency hearing (or any other legislative or judicial hearing) the Bible should have no bearing on the case. Only the facts of the case and the laws which apply should have a bearing.

This guy had been on the payroll, toting a gun, for 33 years. The one time in all those years that it really counted, he decided to run away and hide. His salary was around 80K and his pension will be 75% of that.

The test of courage doesn’t come from putting on a uniform. It comes when all the training is put to the test, whether the Army, the police, firefighters, &c.

I haven’t seen the security video that Sheriff Israel released so I don’t know the details other than he did not enter the school to confront the shooter.

I can imagine scenarios why he might not (unknown number of shooters, dramatically outgunned, staying alive so he could direct backup forces, &c).

His one job as a school resource officer is to provide a response to a threatening situation to students (and often it seems school resource officers are called upon to handcuff students that sass a teacher or fail to turn in homework).

Without viewing the video or investigative reports, I can’t say whether his response was appropriate, or cowardice.

That said, the idea that an armed police officer did not take on a murderer who was killing unarmed students in his area of responsibility seems repugnant to me.

From the radiologist who wrote an article for The Atlantic, who was on duty when the Parkland mass-murder occurred, and diagnosed several of the victims comes this bit:

A medical professor taught me about the dangers of drawing incorrect conclusions from data with the example of gum chewing, smokers, and lung cancer. He said smokers may be more likely to chew gum to cover bad breath, but that one cannot look at the data and decide that gum chewing causes lung cancer. It is the same type of erroneous logic that focuses on mental health after mass shootings, when banning the sale of semi-automatic rifles would be a far more effective means of preventing them.

Banning the AR-15 should not be a partisan issue. While there may be no consensus on many questions of gun control, there seems to be broad support for removing high-velocity, lethal weaponry and high-capacity magazines from the market, which would drastically reduce the incidence of mass murders. Every constitutionally guaranteed right that we are blessed to enjoy comes with responsibilities. Even our right to free speech is not limitless. Second Amendment gun rights must respect the same boundaries.

Look ahead to the upcoming mid-term elections. In Florida, as well as every other state, there are many high school seniors who are currently 18. And there are many more who are now 17 but will turn 18 before the November elections. These students will certainly have a major impact on the local, State, and national elections.

The are pissed and will come out and vote.

Every politician who opposes any type of gun control legislation should be terrified of this voting block.

On top of this, many currently aged 15-17 will be able to vote in 2020.

These “kids” are articulate, involved, and and have a clear understanding of the issues.

They will be the heroes in moving gun control legislation forward.

These kids are the very reason Republicans hate education. They want compliance not independent thought.

As for voting, Republicans are doing everything they can to ensure that votes don’t count. They just replaced the guy who was in charge of ensuing votes can’t be hacked with a hack. The guy that was replaced was competent and Republicans hate competency.

I don’t know what is going to take if they hack voting machines. Turnout won’t matter. This is life under Republicans. They can’t win but for cheating. They ARE Russians in thought and spirit.

Just saw this at the front page of the local NBC news website I linked above.

It is an opinion letter written by the senior newscaster at the station Colleen Marshall. She also does the local Sunday politics talk show that is on before Meet The Press…so she is political and I have a feeling she is a moderate conservative. She is also a lawyer and I think keeps her license current.

Her target for this letter: Dana Loesch.

Colleen Marshall: ‘I am a crying white mother’

I am appalled by the claim made by NRA spokeswoman and conservative radio host, Dana Loesch, that journalists revel in mass shootings because they are “ratings gold” and nothing is better for our broadcasts than “crying white mothers.”

I am a mother, who sometimes fights tears on the set and too often cries in the car on the way home late at night after a day of talking about police officers gunned down in the line of duty, or children running for their lives with their hands up. I am distressed by the opiate epidemic. I am saddened when people are flooded from their homes. I am troubled by murder in any color. And, increasingly, I am angry that journalists are under attack anytime someone wants to deflect criticism or excuse their own misdeeds.

17 people are dead because a troubled teenager opened fire in a school hallway with an AR-15. Some were shot in the back as they ran for cover. Some died leading others to safety. Some were white, some Asian, some Hispanic. Nine died in the Charleston Church massacre. All were black. 26 people died at Newtown. Some were white, some were black. They are all dead.

We need to grieve each senseless act of violence and mourn each life lost to murder, but it is impossible for the nation not to turn its attention to these mass acts of slaughter.

It would be heartless to not stop and pay attention to a group of parents who dropped their children off at school and picked them up at the morgue. It is not a story I relish, but it is a story I am compelled by human decency to share. And, Dana Loesch, excuse me if late at night, after spending the day looking at images of terrified teenagers running past fallen bodies, or talking through the funeral of two fathers who died in service to their community, I am not focusing on “ratings gold.”

I’ll be busy being a crying white mother.

Everything he does he says will be the biggest, strongest, and best, but it’s all gold plated bullshit.

The GOP has no intention of strengthening background checks because it would put a crimp on gun sales, and the NRA would not allow it.

They wont reinstitute the assault weapons ban for same reason.

They have only “solutions” that involve more guns and deflect from the solutions that have worked everywhere else they’ve been tried.

I have a shotgun. When I moved here, the gun shop owner (being a businessman and trying to drum up new business) wanted to see if I would come in his shop and purchase some of his wares. (I’ve been in the shop many times since, but I have never purchased a gun, just shotgun shells.)

He was surprised when asking me about home defence that I said “I have a 12-gage for that.” (There is no police department here other than the county sheriff with one car, and we are near the county line. If the car is on the other side of the county it is nearly an hour away.)

He asked why a shotgun rather than a pistol or something. I pointed out that if I actually had to use a gun for defence and I was awakened in the middle of the night or something, I don’t really need to be able to aim or something in the dark. Moreover, the sound of loading a shotgun is pretty unmistakable.

Since I’ve lived here, I’ve used it once in that capacity (to go to the church across the street to run off out-of-town burglars inside the church at about 4 AM - it’s amazing how loading a shotgun gets the attention of people who don’t really want any trouble).

Look ahead to the upcoming mid-term elections. In Florida, as well as every other state, there are many high school seniors who are currently 18. And there are many more who are now 17 but will turn 18 before the November elections. These students will certainly have a major impact on the local, State, and national elections.

The are pissed and will come out and vote.

Every politician who opposes any type of gun control legislation should be terrified of this voting block.

On top of this, many currently aged 15-17 will be able to vote in 2020.

These “kids” are articulate, involved, and and have a clear understanding of the issues.

They will be the heroes in moving gun control legislation forward.

It was your basic dime-a-dozen Classic Rock station that saw a trend happening with New Wave, jumped on it, and became one of the most influential radio stations in the country. (KROQ in LA ran a similar format at the same time.) Eventually, they went the way of all good radio stations and folded the tent.

Now, they’re back in streaming format, looking to reconnect with their audience and establish a big online presence like rock station KNAC has. I’ve been listening for the past few days, and it’s a deep dive into the New Wave nostalgia pool. If you’re into that kind of stuff, it’s worth a listen at WLIR.fm

Finally getting around to commenting on this. As a veteran, a former police officer, AND a former teacher, I cannot find the words to express how disgusted I am at this. This guy had been on the payroll, toting a gun, for 33 years. The one time in all those years that it really counted, he decided to run away and hide. His salary was around 80K and his pension will be 75% of that.

I remember WLIR, even though I left LI in 1978. I used to listen to it (and WRVR-FM when it was jazz station) when I’d visit my folks. Glad to hear they’re trying a revival.

I really miss WRVR. I had one of their cool T-shirts, and threw it away when it got too tatty to wear in public. Then I learned RVR went to a different format, and regretted my decision.

My sympathies. I’m not a gun owner like you are but I understand the feeling of feeling like a person without a place. FWIW I think the kids were very reasonable in their requests. IMO, I think some gun owners could be a little more empathetic to victims of gun violence rather than just accusing everyone who wants reform of being an “elite.” In fact, I’d call the gun hoarders elites the way they spend on guns.

A teacher, after making sure the kids are safe, grabs her gun to go after the shooter. The moment she steps out the door, she is shot and killed. The killer then walks into the unlocked room and shoots all the kids inside.

Columbus has been lucky in that we have had “alternate” and privately owned WWCD 102 since 1990 or so. They used to stream too, but stopped doing it about 5 years ago. I guess it was budget related. One thing they do is feature local bands in a special format for an hour every week, which is pretty cool. They also have bands stop into their “Big Room” when in town for an interview and a few songs played acoustically or with limited gear.

I think being in state capital city with a huge Ohio State University, a very active local music scene and several different sized concert venues helps keep them in listeners. I always had them on when in my car. Since I don’t drive 30 minutes each way to work anymore I don’t tune them in as often.

Ah, the Larry Kleinman era! Lots of Marshall Tucker and Billy Joel in those days. That was when I first came to NY and after living in Queens for about a year and a half, moved out to the island.

Their weekly live radio concerts (either from the Calderone Concert Hall in Hempstead or Sonic Studos) were incredible. I believe one that they did with Billy Joel led to his being signed by Columbia.

Here’s an archive of live tracks from their New Wave days. Some really good stuff there, that they’re liberally sprinkling into their new programming.

I’ve been traveling and spending time at weddings and stuff, so I haven’t had time to comment much about Trump’s latest brainstorm.

As a veteran teacher, if I were told I had to carry a weapon to do my job, I would quit. Teachers nationwide would probably just walk off the job. Our entire profession is supposed to protect and nurture our students. Carrying a sidearm doesn’t guarantee the first and does nothing for the second.

I am ashamed of this president. I’m going to tell people I’m Canadian.

I took some silly “what country would be best for you?” poll, and it turns out Canada is the best fit for me. Sadly, I believe immigration there requires somewhat more in the way of documentation.

Probably don’t really have the time to stay and chat so just dumping this here (sorry), but that’s not really what a shotgun does; at any sensible home defense-applicable range no (useful) shotgun is going to have much of a spread, certainly not enough to make it so you “don’t really need to be able to aim”. spread at anything below 15 or so feet is going to be a few inches at most, IIRC.
So if you ever need it, please do actually point open end at intruder quite specifically ;-)

It’s more “this, but not that”. A gun group that’s for people who aren’t insane. Is like SmartRecovery, a group for addicts who are not religious.

What I think makes it tough is the communities have been so radicalized over the years. The NRA now opposes measures it once did following Columbine. It’s more than just the quip from the NRA President in 1934.

Back in the 80s, there was a radio station here on Long Island called WLIR. It was your basic dime-a-dozen Classic Rock station that saw a trend happening with New Wave, jumped on it, and became one of the most influential radio stations in the country. (KROQ in LA ran a similar format at the same time.) Eventually, they went the way of all good radio stations and folded the tent.

Now, they’re back in streaming format, looking to reconnect with their audience and establish a big online presence like rock station KNAC has. I’ve been listening for the past few days, and it’s a deep dive into the New Wave nostalgia pool. If you’re into that kind of stuff, it’s worth a listen at WLIR.fm

I’m actually surprised that the owner of a gun shop would ask that question. I’m not a gun owner, but from my own thinking and what I have seen when others have asked, a shotgun is almost always the answer to this question for the following 4 reasons.
1. It’s intimidating - Both the sound of loading and visually so it raises the odds of not even needing to employ it.
2. Limited need to aim, which given the adrenaline and normal peoples reluctance to actually shoot someone is a plus in this type of situation
3. Range/Penetration, especially in urban areas. The expectation is that any intruder will be in the home, so you don’t need a long gun for standoff purposes. To the extent possible, you want to limit the chance of shots missed or otherwise killing a neighbor or someone in your own household.

That quote reminds me of how most schools are designed — very long corridors with clean lines of sight. A shooter at one end of the hallway could easily pick off anyone poking their head out a doorway or around the corner. The only feasible way to take down the shooter would be to come at him from behind from another long corridor with a clean line of sight, if he wasn’t clever enough to cover both corridors from his corner.

If the shooter’s wearing a kevlar vest, the defender would also have to be a marksman to try a headshot while not being a target himself.

I’m not even a gun owner or an LEO, and I can figure this out.

Lots of dead folks, and the active shooter has the drop on all of them all the time.

Only occasionally does the “good guy” with the gun even manage to get off a shot that hits the bad guy. And the good guy all too often hits other good guys.

Then in the aftermath, cops have to figure out who’s who and clear/secure the room. They would have to take extra time figuring out who’s who - leading to detaining the “good guy” while they sort everything out.

For any law enforcement who thinks this is somehow a good idea, they clearly haven’t thought any of this through.

That’s why when people get in trouble they call cops, and when the cops get into trouble, they call ESU. They have the equipment and training for these situations.

Giving lie to the good guy with a gun. The majority of significant school shootings have ended with the shooter committing suicide or an unarmed school worker disarming.

In most cases, police are arriving too late to do anything other than arrest the shooter. Then again, many had police on campus, and it didn’t prevent/deter either.

Columbine had police on campus at time of shooting - didn’t prevent (aka good guy with a gun).

Your comment reminded me about what author David Cay Johnston said the other night about Mueller’s investigation.

He was saying he loves reading through Mueller’s indictments because they are so well written as to be clear, concise, detailed and hard to argue against.

He said too many times, investigators put together indictments that are messy, hard to follow and questionable.

In my opinion a guy that his home state hates is not very likeable. I know several people from Indiana and they always say had Trump not picked Pence he would be out of politics. The script is totally at odds with their training. They’re used to the people making the biggest noise after a horrific shooting like this being politicians and members of advocacy groups, who they can unload on with impunity until viewers tune out the noise and move on.

They have no script to deal with the survivors who speak out, particularly when those survivors are teens who witnessed their own friends gunned down in a matter of minutes.

100% agree. Trump will do damage, but he is a bumbling fool who can’t find a coherent sentence with two hands and a flashlight (h/t Aaron Sorkin, The American President, 1995). Trump has no ideology and can change positions on the head of a pin. While he twists in the wind, very little gets done.

Pence, on the other hand, is a seasoned politician with a clear dominionist agenda. If he makes it to the white house and the Rs still have a majority in the house and senate…..shudder!

I think a large part of the recent fallout may start with yesterday’s speech by Wayne, where he pretty much ditched any pretense of the NRA being anything but the gun lobbying arm of the GOP.

If the inventiveness of Californians has taught me anything it’s that the only thing that will work is a blanket ban on all semi-autos. They’re already getting around the new assault weapon ban by making kits that allow you to drop the mag by replacing the takedown pin with a button that “disassembles” the action, which simultaneously activates the mag release as you pivot the rear of the upper receiver up just a bit.

Since that’s a Bloomberg article, it reminds me to mention…

In NYC, law-abiding people have no difficulty acquiring guns (and the required licenses). Hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers carry guns with them every single day.

At the same time, aggressive enforcement of our relatively strict gun control laws is why our murder rate is down 85% from what it was in the early 90’s.

Illegal guns still exist of course; but when somebody uses them to kill somebody, it gets solved. Because there’s more than enough homicide cops to deal with 1/10 as many cases as there used to be.

The M24 started being replaced by the M110 over a decade ago. It’s a byproduct of the semi-auto SR-25. Which was begat from the AR10 essentially.
Of course, the M24s were then taken and remanufactured into the M2010.

Moral of the story. Military snipers have various tools in their tool box.
