I think to use a physics law, it’s their reaction. As the rest of us grow more open minded to others, they grow more hostile. I don’t remember the right being that hostile to transgender people in the past. I mean they weren’t tolerant but the transgender sex offender fantasy thing to me seems to be a bitter response to losing the SSM battle.

It’s an unwillingness to try and understand people with different experiences. The tide turned on gay rights because it got to the point where everyone knew somebody who was out. It’s a lot harder to stereotype and fearmonger when the guy in accounting is talking about his boyfriend, or that funny gal on that show you like is holding hands with her girlfriend on the red carpet. I suspect the same will eventually happen with transgenderism, more people will come out and they’ll have to confront it, they’ll figure out that it’s not really an issue, and they’ll move on to being scared by something else.

But these are people that are driven entirely by a drive to explain their lack of success via blaming others and tend resentments that substitute for competence and confidence.

Some will simply live with the doublethink. Others will fall in line—they already did when they appointed non-gamers as their advocates for GG. Most will just plod on, because their conspiracy theories and their gaping need for affirmation will trump self-aware analysis.

(I could mention that there’s not a damn thing worth stealing in his house except his guns, but there’s no need to aggravate a neighbor that way.) Another guy, who owns a mere nine guns, most of them handguns, told me over and over that when the “urban vermin” (guess who that means) came out here, he’d be ready for them. Thank god for football, a universal subject to which I can safely switch these conversations.

Well the average American household has about 3-7 days of food and water and that is a fact. I must have been crazy to read the whole thing, even though the first few books were pretty good.

Edited to add: For some reason, I never read much of the Niven/Pournelle stuff, which seems to be at least as bad.

That reminds of the mutt puppy sisters my husband and I adopted when we got our house. The girls were about 6 months old. My husband had already decided that the blonde, Daisy Mae was a dummy so he spent his time with Pooby to try to teach her to shake. He was sitting on the floor in front of Pooby repeating “shake”, lifting her paw, etc. over and over. Daisy was elegantly posed (the Greta Garbo of dogs) and trying to nap at the other end of the sofa giving him a side-eye periodically for disturbing her beauty nap. Finally, with a long sigh, she stood up and walked over to my husband and lifted her paw! She was like “if I shake with you will you shut up and let me rest?” I was dying.

It was no accident. She totally learned just from watching him try to teach Pooby, who never did get it.

I remember an account from an academic book, Policing the Southern City, which centered on New Orleans in the later 1800s. Several cops were eating at the same table in a restaurant there. They fired a total of nine shots from a distance of approximately three feet before the other officers pulled them down. I see Tony Stark so differently. I think he did have a righteous epiphany about the weapons he was producing and took great risks to stop once he experienced the results of what he’d done. I see his brilliance as being his greatest obstacle - he creates stuff because he can without necessarily seeing the consequences until they are on top of him, thus his willingness to accept some authoritarian control. IOW showing awareness that he doesn’t know it all. He’s seen his shit backfire on him and do harm and feels sincere guilt about it.

My now 8 month old kits surprise me often with what appear to be peculiar behaviors from what I expect. I don’t know how much of that is due to having been raised from about a week old by a dog person and an older dog brother.

Unless I’ve misremembered accounts of the Deir es-Zor fight, it wasn’t exactly an “Us V. Them” affair: basically “their” proxy forces vs. “our” proxies (though with, respectively, Russian personnel and American “advisors”): As I recall, the main reasons for the Russians’ asses getting kicked were 1) “our” side had better ordnance, and more of it, and 2) shockingly poor intelligence led the “Russian” force into an area where they did anticipate any resistance. But yes, “their” side was reported to have cobbled together from various local militias and Russian mercenaries. Whose demise came as an unpleasant surprise to their families….

As is true with all pets, cats do somewhat adopt behaviors and quirks from their owners. The fact that cats are aloof and independent doesn’t mean that they don’t somewhat imprint upon their favorite person and reflect the personality thereof. My cat, for example, exhibits an extraordinary choosiness in whom he allows to pet him, whereas my wife’s cat is much more indiscriminate in her lust for attention. Introverted vs. extroverted.

That’s one thing - I expected aloof and independent. Neither of my kits exhibit this behavior. At. All. They both follow me wherever I go just like their dog brother. They come when I call them actually better than the dog. They have never met a stranger. In fact, when my RV guy was here the other day fixing a leak (damn freeze) both cats were on top of him purring away. He was kinda wierded out by it. LOL

Cats can be weird like that. Some of them are literally aloof, but some of them are very possessive. I, personally, think it’s down to the amount of personal interaction they have and whether they’re restricted to interacting with one person versus several. My cat lived with me for his whole life prior to being introduced to Mrs. Fish when we married; Mrs. Fish’s cat, on the other hand, had to live with everybody under her parents’ roof coming to visit her at odd hours of the day. They are surprisingly reflective of their owners, more so than I think most cat owners are willing to admit.

Superman’s been written a bunch of different ways. I love bright, shiny Superman (particularly the DCAU version and the “All-Star Superman” version).

But he’s also been used…generally in alt-universe versions…to make a point about a the way that shallow brightness and optimism can cover for dark things (but he still ultimately a good guy, nine times out of ten).

And then there’s the Silver Age, where he kind of…did wacky stuff that nowadays would be consider abuse of power for frivolous ends, but at the time was just amusing one-offs.
