I just dropped in on my old stomping grounds, the political subformum of a bowhunting website. Wow. Did you know that Gitmo has been upgraded to the tune of $500,000,000? And all so that George Soros, both Podestas, the Bushes, and assorted other ‘Rothschild assets’ “many of whom are part of a Pedophile Satanic global network” could be tried by military tribunals there? Indeed, they may already have been airlifted there!

This is worse than Louise Mench and her “Marshal of the Supreme Court” nonsense. And they’re lapping it up. Not all, to be sure, but many, including at least one guy who was sane, or at least seemed to be, before November 2008.

So, I guess the police would be bringing murderers, rapists, drunks, prostitutes, drug dealers, and muggers to your kid’s school to book them, and hold them for interrogation, and then release them, right at the door of the school.

Great idea!

I don’t remember the right being that hostile to transgender people in the past. I mean they weren’t tolerant but the transgender sex offender fantasy thing to me seems to be a bitter response to losing the SSM battle.

It’s an unwillingness to try and understand people with different experiences. The tide turned on gay rights because it got to the point where everyone knew somebody who was out. It’s a lot harder to stereotype and fearmonger when the guy in accounting is talking about his boyfriend, or that funny gal on that show you like is holding hands with her girlfriend on the red carpet. I suspect the same will eventually happen with transgenderism, more people will come out and they’ll have to confront it, they’ll figure out that it’s not really an issue, and they’ll move on to being scared by something else.

The simplest representation of how US “conservatism” lacks self-reflection is the sheer size of its market for people that complain and take offense.

And I do mean market. As in the quantity of money that moves in the process of consuming grievance and being coddled in self-indulgence resentment.

John Oliver made the joke this weekend about how when Germany talks about taking a leadership role the rest of Europe goes, “NO! They are still in time out and they know what they did!”

I have a feeling there are parts of the world that probably still feel that way about the British. As the old line goes: the sun doesn’t set on the British Empire, but that’s only because God doesn’t trust the English in the dark.

America, 2018:

One Texas Board of Education primary result could spell a return to culture wars

Over her 16 years on the State Board of Education, Pat Hardy has rallied for her share of socially conservative measures. She’s endorsed keeping “pro-American” values in history textbooks. She’s backed emphasizing “states’ rights” instead of slavery as the cause of the Civil War. And she’s supported teaching “both sides” of arguments around climate change.

But her Republican challengers in the March 6 primaries — Feyi Obamehinti and Cheryl Surber— are telling voters that they’re even further to the right. (Surber’s campaign Facebook page even refers to her as the “Donald Trump of the Texas State Board of Education” candidate.)

[…]

Obamehinti also supports teaching creationism in science classrooms and is skeptical of the idea that the state should approve a Mexican-American studies course, a current consideration on the board. She argues she can do a better job of reaching out to constituents than Hardy has done. “I live in District 11, and I have never had any outreach in 16 years,” she said.

Cheryl Surber om 2015:

On the ‘silent majority,’ Trump is doubly wrong

She likes Trump, she said, because “he can’t be bought.”

She also likes him because “he’s a natural-born citizen, unlike Cruz, [Bobby] Jindal, [Marco] Rubio or [Rick] Santorum” — taking a conspiracy website’s view of the constitutional requirement.

So, what are her chances of getting the nomination?

Probably not big, given her competitors are already creationists and right-wing social extremists.

No they won’t.

If these were rational actors who could only hold one thought at a time, that would be what would happen.

But these are people that are driven entirely by a drive to explain their lack of success via blaming others and tend resentments that substitute for competence and confidence.

Some will simply live with the doublethink. Others will fall in line—they already did when they appointed non-gamers as their advocates for GG. Most will just plod on, because their conspiracy theories and their gaping need for affirmation will trump self-aware analysis.

re: #78 Hecuba’s daughter

Her problem was she didn’t recall what happened at all. It probably was the blogger, but it was left unresolved — no absolute proof. I was thinking she was a younger version of Ann Coulter but certainly could be Laura too.

I saw it as her not being willing to go after an “ally” and her need to push her agenda. She hesitated enough for me in the show to say “yeah it was the blogger but I got a story to sell”

From the article:

The UK is too busy shooting itself in the foot as a result of the Murdoch lead news ginning up the Olds (much like here) and some internal folks (all having the same Russian connections).

If the UK continued in its path of brexit, it will likely fall for decades if not generations. And they are apparently too stupid to realize or admit.

Note: The pro-Brexit campaign involved Cambridge Analytica and Russian bots, and only squeaked into a tiny majority. Another victory for Vlad!

Not sure it’s so much a matter of “stupid” so much as “shortsighted”: nationalism is a helluva drug, and the Brits, by and large, have been mainlining the stuff for centuries. Their main problem is their post-Brexit economic strategy seems to be predicated on an international order being what it was in about 1910, and the Plucky British Bulldog Standing Up To The Blitz attitude is likely to have (very) little effect in the world economy of the 21st Century. Of course, it gives the mouthbreather rubes a thrill (I read recently that MPs are still getting letters from their constituents bitching about why “those foreigners” haven’t all been chucked out yet), but probably isn’t going to cut it as geopolitical strategy….

The gun nuts aren’t stockpiling arms vs. the US government. They are stockpiling arms for the Zombie Apocalypse, when endless teeming hordes of savage Hottentots will burst forth from the cities and need to be mowed down en masse by heavily armed crackers to ‘defend Western civilization’.

I hear this shit all the time from people out here in the extreme boondocks of NW Louisiana. One near neighbor has a freakin arsenal, something like twenty weapons, many of them AR-15 type. He’s constantly worried about a home invasion. I’ve told him, man, even FedEx has a hard time finding this place. (I could mention that there’s not a damn thing worth stealing in his house except his guns, but there’s no need to aggravate a neighbor that way.) Another guy, who owns a mere nine guns, most of them handguns, told me over and over that when the “urban vermin” (guess who that means) came out here, he’d be ready for them. Thank god for football, a universal subject to which I can safely switch these conversations.

Well the average American household has about 3-7 days of food and water and that is a fact. Any disruption of “the system” that lasts longer than a week is going to lead to people starving to death and/or doing crazy shit to survive unless there’s a massive national or international relief effort that happens immediately. If it’s a nation-wide or world-wide event, FEMA or the UN will not be coming to rescue anyone. It will turn into Mad Max relatively fast.

Then add a bit of racism and the notion “everyone in the cities is a taker/leech/on welfare/etc” and you see where it goes.

They all secretly want to kill all the “leeches” and then be the people who get to decide how the New (White) Murca that all these “cool ranch patritos™” create will be run.

They have far more to fear from each other than they do any “horde of starving brown people” from the cities. Terry Goodkind’s sword of truth series is the worst example of RWNJ political allegory I’ve ever seen in SF/fantasy. The first few books only dropped a few hints here and there, but at the end it was like a recycled version of Atlas Shrugged. Edited to add: For some reason, I never read much of the Niven/Pournelle stuff, which seems to be at least as bad.

The actual result in that would be a huge portion of the world starving to death because the population size absolutely requires modern science to support it. People who yammer on about GMOs being bad, etc are advocating a massive culling of poor people whether they know it or not.

Got scared off from Goodkind from all the descriptions of his lunacy, but I love the idea that he’s easily frightened of chickens.

Hissing, hackles lifting, the chicken’s head rose. Kahlan pulled back. Its claws digging into stiff dead flesh, the chicken slowly turned to face her. It cocked its head, making its comb flop, its wattles sway. “Shoo,” Kahlan heard herself whisper. There wasn’t enough light, and besides, the side of its beak was covered with gore, so she couldn’t tell if it had the dark spot, But she didn’t need to see it. “Dear spirits, help me,” she prayed under her breath. The bird let out a slow chicken cackle. It sounded like a chicken, but in her heart she knew it wasn’t. In that instant, she completely understood the concept of a chicken that was not a chicken. This looked like a chicken, like most of the Mud People’s chickens. But this was no chicken. This was evil manifest.

Umberto Eco Makes a List of the 14 Common Features of Fascism

1. The cult of tradition. “One has only to look at the syllabus of every fascist movement to find the major traditionalist thinkers. The Nazi gnosis was nourished by traditionalist, syncretistic, occult elements.”

2. The rejection of modernism. “The Enlightenment, the Age of Reason, is seen as the beginning of modern depravity. In this sense Ur-Fascism can be defined as irrationalism.”

3. The cult of action for action’s sake. “Action being beautiful in itself, it must be taken before, or without, any previous reflection. Thinking is a form of emasculation.”

4. Disagreement is treason. “The critical spirit makes distinctions, and to distinguish is a sign of modernism. In modern culture the scientific community praises disagreement as a way to improve knowledge.”

5. Fear of difference. “The first appeal of a fascist or prematurely fascist movement is an appeal against the intruders. Thus Ur-Fascism is racist by definition.”

6. Appeal to social frustration. “One of the most typical features of the historical fascism was the appeal to a frustrated middle class, a class suffering from an economic crisis or feelings of political humiliation, and frightened by the pressure of lower social groups.”

7. The obsession with a plot. “The followers must feel besieged. The easiest way to solve the plot is the appeal to xenophobia.”

8. The enemy is both strong and weak. “By a continuous shifting of rhetorical focus, the enemies are at the same time too strong and too weak.”

9. Pacifism is trafficking with the enemy. “For Ur-Fascism there is no struggle for life but, rather, life is lived for struggle.”

10. Contempt for the weak. “Elitism is a typical aspect of any reactionary ideology.”

11. Everybody is educated to become a hero. “In Ur-Fascist ideology, heroism is the norm. This cult of heroism is strictly linked with the cult of death.”

12. Machismo and weaponry. “Machismo implies both disdain for women and intolerance and condemnation of nonstandard sexual habits, from chastity to homosexuality.”

13. Selective populism. “There is in our future a TV or Internet populism, in which the emotional response of a selected group of citizens can be presented and accepted as the Voice of the People.”

14. Ur-Fascism speaks Newspeak. “All the Nazi or Fascist schoolbooks made use of an impoverished vocabulary, and an elementary syntax, in order to limit the instruments for complex and critical reasoning.”

They reality is that, they… the extreme right-wing gun-nut preppers with a giant arsenal and a “bunker”, secretly all want to be Negan or the Governor from Walking Dead. They have far more to fear from each other than they do any “horde of starving brown people” from the cities. There will be a handful of them that become Negans and it *will* be those Negans that raid their farms for supplies and probably kills or enslaves them and their family rather than the “swarthy horde”.

That reminds of the mutt puppy sisters my husband and I adopted when we got our house. The girls were about 6 months old. My husband had already decided that the blonde, Daisy Mae was a dummy so he spent his time with Pooby to try to teach her to shake. He was sitting on the floor in front of Pooby repeating “shake”, lifting her paw, etc. over and over. Daisy was elegantly posed (the Greta Garbo of dogs) and trying to nap at the other end of the sofa giving him a side-eye periodically for disturbing her beauty nap. Finally, with a long sigh, she stood up and walked over to my husband and lifted her paw! She was like “if I shake with you will you shut up and let me rest?” I was dying.

It was no accident. She totally learned just from watching him try to teach Pooby, who never did get it.

I was trying to remember that one - where an unholy union of Greenies and Evangelicals took over and stopped technology development, and somehow the world almost instantly lapsed into the fastest Ice Age this side of The Day After Tomorrow.

That union of the Liberals and the Evangelicals is about as likely as LGBTQ folks bringing on SHARIA!!!!!!

The cannibalistic horde in Lucifer’s Hammer was also a union of evangelicals and unlikely allies, inner city black gangs in this case. The leader in fact was the originator of the Comet Wardens, a radio preacher whose original cult had come to such a satisfying end just after impact.

“…Hoft — who declined an in-person interview and only responded briefly to questions via email — rejected the label often applied to his creation: far right. The term, he said, is “used by Democrats and far left media to smear anyone who opposes the leftist narrative.”

He also dismissed the idea that his site has spread falsehoods. “Our track record is comparable or better than mainstream media,” he wrote. For example? “We didn’t fall for the false Trump-Russia collusion scandal.”

These crazy movie-fed fantasies about handguns being some kind of magic wand, even against rifles.

I remember an account from an academic book, Policing the Southern City, which centered on New Orleans in the later 1800s. Several cops were eating at the same table in a restaurant there. Two of them, seated side by side, got into a bitter argument and rose from their chairs, drew their revolvers, and opened fire on each other. They fired a total of nine shots from a distance of approximately three feet before the other officers pulled them down. Not only did they fail to hit each other, but through a miracle managed not to hit anyone else in the place.

But our (their) president seems to think that any old teacher with a pistol could have ended the Parkland massacre just like that, bing-bing-bing. What a fucking idiot. He should go back to pretending to drive a fire truck, not that any FD in the nation would hire him.

The thing is, I actually feel like RDJ redeemed himself a little bit with his portrayals of Sherlock Holmes and Tony Stark. Yes, Stark is a complete asshole; he is basically the anti-Batman, in a sense. But I feel like RDJ did him some justice, though how much of that is his own personality I am unable to judge.

Well, you know, Howard Stark was also a complete asshole. So the asshole didn’t fall far from the tree.

Maybe in 2020, they’ll somehow get a negative amount of the AA vote.

Reading that, it would appear that it was horribly worded.

It reads like “we shouldn’t have hired a black guy.”

I think what they meant was “a black guy should not have been our only criterion.”

On second thought, that doesn’t really sound any better.

I see Tony Stark so differently. I think he did have a righteous epiphany about the weapons he was producing and took great risks to stop once he experienced the results of what he’d done. I see his brilliance as being his greatest obstacle - he creates stuff because he can without necessarily seeing the consequences until they are on top of him, thus his willingness to accept some authoritarian control. IOW showing awareness that he doesn’t know it all. He’s seen his shit backfire on him and do harm and feels sincere guilt about it.

The only thing about Superman that drags him down is that the writers literally have to take a nerfbat to him to make him compelling. He is literally a god among men, and unless they reduce him in some form or fashion, he can do whatever the fuck he wants and still win. At least superheroes like Batman, Captain America, and even Iron Man are mere humans (or enhanced humans) who have vulnerabilities and mortality.

The thing about it is, and this might be why we find them so compelling, no superhero is truly perfect. Superman is a spoiled rotten dick. Iron Man is an asshole with daddy issues. Captain America thinks he knows better than everyone else because he’s America’s sweetheart. Batman thinks he’s prepared for literally any eventuality. Judge dismisses coal mogul’s defamation lawsuit against John Oliver

Oliver dedicated an extended segment in June to criticizing the coal industry, with a focus on Murray, including his frequent criticisms of former President Barack Obama’s “evil agenda,” his lawsuits challenging regulations and his closeness with President Trump.

“If you even appear to be on the same side as black lung, you’re on the wrong fucking side,” Oliver said of Murray’s lawsuit against a federal rule meant to reduce black lung disease among coal miners.

Murray sent Oliver a cease-and-desist letter before the show aired and threatened to sue him, taking the case up to the Supreme Court. Instead, Oliver dug in.

Putin has raised proxy warfare to an art form. We saw this in Ukraine. He does not send regular Russian forces, but works through a menagerie of deniable assets; private security contractors, local militias, volunteers in insurgent forces, even motorcycle gangs.
There is precedent. The Chinese never admitted that their regular forces fought in Korea. They were the “People’s Volunteers.” This was news to many of the conscripts who were captured: They not only had not volunteered, they sometimes didn’t know what part of the world they had been sent to fight in.

As is true with all pets, cats do somewhat adopt behaviors and quirks from their owners. The fact that cats are aloof and independent doesn’t mean that they don’t somewhat imprint upon their favorite person and reflect the personality thereof. My cat, for example, exhibits an extraordinary choosiness in whom he allows to pet him, whereas my wife’s cat is much more indiscriminate in her lust for attention. Introverted vs. extroverted.

re: #332 Shiplord Kirel, live from behind wingnut lines

Putin has raised proxy warfare to an art form. We saw this in Ukraine. He does not send regular Russian forces, but works through a menagerie of deniable assets; private security contractors, local militias, volunteers in insurgent forces, even motorcycle gangs.
There is precedent. The Chinese never admitted that their regular forces fought in Korea. They were the “People’s Volunteers.” This was news to many of the conscripts who were captured: They not only had not volunteered, they sometimes didn’t know what part of the world they had been sent to fight in.

Unless I’ve misremembered accounts of the Deir es-Zor fight, it wasn’t exactly an “Us V. Them” affair: basically “their” proxy forces vs. “our” proxies (though with, respectively, Russian personnel and American “advisors”): As I recall, the main reasons for the Russians’ asses getting kicked were 1) “our” side had better ordnance, and more of it, and 2) shockingly poor intelligence led the “Russian” force into an area where they did anticipate any resistance. But yes, “their” side was reported to have cobbled together from various local militias and Russian mercenaries. Whose demise came as an unpleasant surprise to their families….

Not enough.

Give it time. Each time a company bails, they have done the calculations and figured out that the NRA’s claimed membership is less than 1% of the populace. As one company bails, more follow.

Like the car rental agencies … . one bailed yesterday, then today the rest did.

That’s one thing - I expected aloof and independent. Neither of my kits exhibit this behavior. At. All. They both follow me wherever I go just like their dog brother. They come when I call them actually better than the dog. They have never met a stranger. In fact, when my RV guy was here the other day fixing a leak (damn freeze) both cats were on top of him purring away. He was kinda wierded out by it. LOL

Cats can be weird like that. Some of them are literally aloof, but some of them are very possessive. I, personally, think it’s down to the amount of personal interaction they have and whether they’re restricted to interacting with one person versus several. My cat lived with me for his whole life prior to being introduced to Mrs. Fish when we married; Mrs. Fish’s cat, on the other hand, had to live with everybody under her parents’ roof coming to visit her at odd hours of the day. They are surprisingly reflective of their owners, more so than I think most cat owners are willing to admit.

My only thought after reading that:

Whelp, reckon it’s about time to take that bold step up from the merely metaphorical and literally drown myself in a bucket of oatmeal.

‘Cause one way or another, that’s where this is headed.

Superman’s been written a bunch of different ways. I love bright, shiny Superman (particularly the DCAU version and the “All-Star Superman” version).

But he’s also been used…generally in alt-universe versions…to make a point about a the way that shallow brightness and optimism can cover for dark things (but he still ultimately a good guy, nine times out of ten).

And then there’s the Silver Age, where he kind of…did wacky stuff that nowadays would be consider abuse of power for frivolous ends, but at the time was just amusing one-offs.
