The FL GOP are a menace to society - just like the GOP at large.

They’re intent on selling guns at the behest of the NRA. They’re on a short leash.

Time to show the GOP that the NRA doesn’t speak for all Americans. It doesn’t speak for a majority of Americans. It speaks for a fringe group that doesn’t care how many die from gunfire so long as more guns get sold.

Time for this to end.

The GOP are a clear and present danger to the life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness for all Americans.

The NRA lobbying efforts are not to be underestimated, but neither should a motivated society intent to finally shove the NRA into the dustbin of history for their craven agenda that puts gunmaker profits ahead of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

The NRA sole motivator is making sure more guns get sold. They will block all efforts to limit gun sales - and watch for this with the so called Congressional GOP plan. They’ll put in poison pill provisions to make sure that the bill doesn’t pass (and the GOP will blame Democrats for it as they inevitably do, instead of voting clean bills that would show just how evil the GOP/NRA truly are).

The Students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

The students do not want to tear government down like maybe some thought they wanted in the 60s. No, they are fully prepared to do this through independent political message at the voting booth.

Easy availability of guns makes for a higher gun death rate. States with lax gun laws are more likely to have higher gun death rates.

We’d have even more statistics and data, but the Dickey amendment prevents the CDC from doing critical research on firearms deaths. That’s one more piece that needs to end.

Trump hasn’t only given a “tepid response to Parkland,” he’s been all over the place. At the present time, he’s saying he’s for enhanced background checks and banning bump stocks. Before that, he was for raising the age needed to purchase guns. I don’t expect him to do anything until after he’s spoken to Hannity, Pirro, LaPierre, and the others he calls for advice. I’m glad his damn approval rating is trending downward. Maybe it means that more Americans are noticing that he’s an empty-headed, arrogant, narcissistic, blowhard who doesn’t know shit about shit. My four-legged baby Penelope is smarter than the Yam.

I think that is his real skin color you are seeing.

Everything else is the orange spray tan coloring. The bit around his eyes is not covered by the spray because he wears little protectors that make that round shape.

At least that is how it appears. Many cartoonists really play that up.

Police found the man outside his residence, naked, covered in Tide laundry detergent, flailing his arms and throwing snow on his head, according to a police report. He resisted arrest, but was eventually taken to St. Luke’s South Shore Hospital, 5900 S. Lake Drive, where he was placed in medicated sedation.

Three firearms were collected from the residence because of the domestic violence allegations. He and his wife have four children (three in common).

He is facing three felony charges — battery or threat to judge/prosecutor/law enforcement officer, first-degree child sexual assault under 16, and second degree recklessly endangering safety (domestic abuse) — as well as a misdemeanor charge of resisting/obstructing an officer.

During his first court appearance Feb. 19, the defense advised he might not be competent to proceed, according to online court records. He was remanded into the custody of the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office and will be examined. The doctor’s report return is scheduled for March 12.

According to a police report, the man’s teenage son told police his father had been acting strangely lately. He said he’d been watching religious videos — which his wife confirmed in the report — and was obsessed with “claiming his nationality.” The boy said his father had asked him if he’d emailed President Donald Trump requesting he claim his nationality to “free my people.”

Remembered something today.

My thesis for my college political science class was on gun rights and gun control and lack of will to put sensible gun laws in place.

That was 25 years ago.

Some of us have been working on this issue for YEARS. The problem has always been breaking the back of the gun lobby and removing the politicians in their pockets from office. And it’s not just Republicans. Yes, it is more Republicans that Democrats but it’s still across both parties. A Democrat may take no money from the NRA but consistently vote against gun control.

We’ve been here working this a very long time. But there was simply no way to break this logjam. I hope we finally will now.

I got a delivery today in a box that also contained big bubble/balloon filler stuff. Cat toys! Tossed it on the floor. Heard the kits having a blast in it. Got up to visit the john and see that they have also gotten into the closet and pulled out the package of toilet paper. Three rolls of slightly damaged TP with no wrapper. Put the TP back in the closet, didn’t look for the wrapper. Later came to bed and thought I should hang up the shirt a friend gave me today that was too small for her and she couldn’t send back. I’d put it on the dresser when I got home. Gone. WTF? I know I put it there. Nowhere to be found. Huh. No sign of it or the baggie thing it was in. Until I looked in the box. There was the shirt, the shirt wrapper, and the TP wrapper. I guess they thought it all belonged in there. I no longer question such things.

Easy availability of guns makes for a higher gun death rate. States with lax gun laws are more likely to have higher gun death rates.

I can’t tell whether anything is missing, but I told my wife that it’s a pretty safe bet that somewhere in the house she’s got a pile of our stuff stashed away.

My wife now calls her the magpie.

FedEx floating their excuse that they are a common carrier regulated by the Transportation Department (true) means they can’t discriminate on an organisation’s political positions (true) means they can’t end their discount programme with the NRA (false).

FedEx generally won’t deliver to where I live anyway, so if I was to say “I’m boycotting FedEx” that really doesn’t mean much. The nearest place I can go to a FedEx box or office is over fifty miles away.

On the other hand, the Post Office is no more expensive (really), and is one block away.

I only do business on-line with companies that use the US Mail or offer it as an option.

Interesting side story behind the hide bar because it’s probably boring, from when we were selling our house in Oklahoma:

We’d already bought our house here in Nebraska for cash. That made moving a lot easier, since we didn’t have to move our stuff into storage first then use the money from the sale of our old home to buy our new home.

We dealt with an auction company to sell our old home; after the auction, the auctioneer hired a title company to clear the paperwork for the sale.

The title company called us up here to tell us they were going to send the paperwork by UPS overnight. We told them not to do that, because UPS doesn’t deliver here until they collect enough stuff to make the trip worthwhile; we suggested the Postal Service’s Express Mail.

The title company insisted they would use UPS. We assured them we would turn around the paperwork and send it back USPS as soon as we got it.

It took the paperwork three weeks to get to us. The title company started harassing us on the telephone every day after the first week, to which all we could respond was “we told you so.”

When we sent the paperwork back by the Post Office, noting what UPS charged to send it to us and what the Post Office charged to send it back, the Post Office was cheaper by about a dollar.

I never have trouble with the Post Office or UPS here in Los Angeles but I have had REPEATED problems with FedEX. Multiple times I have been home waiting for a package, checking FedEX’s webpage for the delivery status, shows “On the truck for delivery” and by 8PM I see “Delivery Attempted” even though they DON’T SHOW UP AT ALL. You call FedEx and get a bullshit answer that “You weren’t there” even though I was at my place the whole CENSORED day!

A man was shot to death Monday while broadcasting himself on Facebook Live in North Carolina just one block from a police station, authorities said.

The man, identified as Prentis Robinson, had just visited the police station in Wingate to report his cell phone as stolen when the attack occurred as he was using a selfie stick.

Mr. Robinson used to broadcast live musical performances over Facebook. Facebook removed the video, however the Charlotte Observer captured it before it was removed.

My wife’s websites (but without adverts, she has no adverts) are done with bright blocks of colour text on black or white backgrounds, with larger than average text.

She points out this is considered by many disability groups and Web designers to be a standard for people with low-vision abilities to be able to read a computer.

The Washington Post’s black-on-white layout is no different than my own regional newspaper (also black-on-white text).

This may be making UK leaders way too passive in what they need to be doing at this time, for the purpose of the future.

The 21st century rolls along and so far it has been mostly about ethno-nationalists trying to reassert themselves over the internationalists who are working from the post WWII situation.

Yet a few things are clearly going to be inevitable by 2050 - 1) resource challenges are going to force human societies to be more efficient or unwind into chaos (see Syria as an example of how bad “unwind” can be), and, 2) changes in demographics in the world’s democracies will mean changes in social emphases in regards to what countries are expected to do.

The woman in Denison, Tex. who broke up with her boyfriend, slashed her own jeans, then falsely accused three African-American men of rape (resulting in numerous Felony charges that could have carried thirty years imprisonment) because she didn’t want her mother (she was seventeen at the time) angry with her, will receive zero jail time.

She will either get probation or deferred adjudication. She was charged with two counts of tampering with evidence and two counts of tampering with government records (one while she was in jail).

When she first claimed she was raped, a huge outcry of local (white) citizens went up, sparking Internet sleuthing to try to find the alleged rapists, and forming white vigilante squads. Local police spent many days interviewing African-Americans in the area to see if they were associated with the alleged crime.

Harmon was reported as a missing person on March 8, after her then-fiancé returned to their shared apartment and found her vehicle abandoned in the parking lot and several of her belongings scattered on the ground. Several hours after the initial report, Harmon walked into a Denison church where she told staff she had been kidnapped and raped. Harmon told investigators three black men had approached her in a parking lot, forced her into an SUV and drove her to wooded area where two of the three men raped her.

On March 21, Harmon confessed to investigators that she lied about the kidnapping and rape. Harmon admitted that she and her fiancé had fought recently and that she knew the relationship likely would not last. Following the argument, she said she went for a walk and ended up at an abandoned house where she began to cut herself. Fearing her family would be upset with the self-inflicted injuries, she told police she nodded when church staff asked whether she had been sexually assaulted.

Scotland would be independent in two seconds if the EU were to promise them successor-state-to-the-UK status, but Brussels won’t do that because Spain is paranoid that it would lead to an independent Catalonia and possibly Basqueria.

I don’t disagree but the UK is what it is, sink or swim, etc. The only two likely alternatives I see are (a) cancellation of brexit, or (b) hard brexit (and (b) means borders).

A handful of high altitude detonations designed to efficiently subject vast swaths of infrastructure to EMP from the detonations would have a major impact on communications and electric infrastructure globally.

A few hundred ground detonations seeking to wipe out nuclear silos and other hardened targets would probably be sufficient to kick up enough radioactive dust to trigger a nasty nuclear winter.

Russia’s and the USA’s ICBMs and submarine-launched missiles are largely configured for automatic retaliation (either by their respective governments, or by computer).

Someone launches a nuke (or more than one), pretty much everyone who is threatened will retaliate. As for the majority of the non-nuclear armed world, well, they go down with the rest of us.

Say for the sake of example, North Korea was to actually launch a nuclear missile at the United States (the current conservative fear mongering). The US retaliates, probably with more than one, enough to destroy the majority of North Korea’s military and industrial infrastructure.

South Korea, Japan, the People’s Republic of China, and the Russian Federation all get at least part of the fallout. China and Russia would likely not look kindly on the USA salting their countries with nuclear fallout.

That agreement was not a treaty. Moreover, Republicans blocked any meaningful response over Crimea, not Obama.

As for Kaliningrad, I had the opportunity to observe that up close and personal when Russia was pouring jet fighters and artillery into Kaliningrad for a military exercise, while my wife and I were thirty miles away in Gdansk, Poland, watching discussions about it on Polish television. Russia did their exercise, then pulled out all that equipment and personnel again.

As for connecting the Kaliningrad exclave to the Russian Federation proper, that would involve invading the Baltic states, which are part of NATO (along with Poland). At least in theory, any US President and Congress would uphold our obligations to NATO in the event of the invasion of a NATO state.

It is damn curious that Donald Trump keeps attacking NATO, and suggesting we should pull out of the Atlantic Alliance. It’s almost like he’s working for Russia.

Sea-level rise is a major consequence of climate change that will continue long after emissions of greenhouse gases have stopped. The 2015 Paris Agreement aims at reducing climate-related risks by reducing greenhouse gas emissions to net zero and limiting global-mean temperature increase. Here we quantify the effect of these constraints on global sea-level rise until 2300, including Antarctic ice-sheet instabilities. We estimate median sea-level rise between 0.7 and 1.2 m, if net-zero greenhouse gas emissions are sustained until 2300, varying with the pathway of emissions during this century. Temperature stabilization below 2 °C is insufficient to hold median sea-level rise until 2300 below 1.5 m. We find that each 5-year delay in near-term peaking of CO2 emissions increases median year 2300 sea-level rise estimates by ca. 0.2 m, and extreme sea-level rise estimates at the 95th percentile by up to 1 m. Our results underline the importance of near-term mitigation action for limiting long-term sea-level rise risks.

It’s actually bad news.

No, it will take several centuries. Currently on a decadal basis, sea level is rising about 5mm/yr. This is 5x what sea level rose for a few millennia before the 20th century.

But 5mm/yr is only half a meter per century.

Various analyses expect that to increase as Antarctica warms up.

But even then the yearly amount will only about double again, in pessimistic scenarios.

Assuming we continue a net positive GHG for the rest of this century, sea level will continue to rise for many, many centuries to come.

Very intermittently, one might expect an acute rise, due to a major glacier collapse in Antarctica.

Long before sea level rise sinks coastal cities like fabled Atlantis and Lyonesse, those cities will become unlivable due to encroachment of the sea.

Already Miami has sea water regularly entering the city due to storms and such, and sometimes overwhelming its storm drain and sewer systems.

Add to that tropical storms (whether or not they increase in intensity) and cities get damaged so badly that the economy can’t keep up with rebuilding them. Increasing population in those areas will only make that problem worse; for the USA there is plenty of interior areas to retreat to but for other nations not so much (like Bangladesh or Pacific Island nations).

That said, the idea he wants to strengthen Medicaid, Medicare, education, and housing is pretty refreshing to hear from a Republican. (Still not my problem for them to save their own party though.)

Though I have met several local politicians due to my own position, I have not met this fellow. (The Alliance City Planning Commission, his current position, is not really on the radar for my own city council.) I suspect if he does mount a serious campaign, he’ll probably come here. I might go to hear him speak if that’s the case. (Campaigning in this district requires going to a lot of small villages.)

Baby update - thanks for all the well wishes yesterday

Pediatrician looked at the kid and said, “that rash is completely different than the one I saw a few days ago.” I said, “well according to the Internet - which is making us new parents paranoid - it looks like scarlet fever rash or strep rash.” The scary part was the Doc agreed.

The good news: no strep - they tested the boy. They sent it out to get cultured tho. Even better news, after a good nights sleep the horrible rash all over his body just disappeared. His appetite is back and he seems to be his happy normal self. So YAY - but still no idea what the hell that was.


Parenting:
When they said you wouldn’t sleep - I said no problem I function well on little sleep.
When they said you will worry everyday - I said no problem I’m already a worrier
When they said you need to be cautious about illnesses - I said shit, I’m a hypochondriac

In one he using a Rolling Stone article about the American press having to cosign Obama’s dubious intelligence report about Russian hacking. It was dated December 16, 2016.

If sonny boy thinks the Russian hacking “story” was similar to the bad intelligence run-up to invading Iraq I think it is a pretty good guess daddy Sanders believed it too.

West Virginia teachers have been on strike for four days, shutting down every single public school in the state. It’s the state’s first teacher strike since 1990, and involves around 20,000 teachers and another 13,000 school service employees; they walked after Republican Gov. Jim Justice signed a bill last week giving teachers a two percent raise starting this July, but only a 1 percent raise for the following two years — which teachers and staff say isn’t enough to keep up with the cost of living. The other big issue in the strike is the cost of healthcare through the state’s public employee insurance plan, which covers all state employees.

In one he using a Rolling Stone article about the American press having to cosign Obama’s dubious intelligence report about Russian hacking. It was dated December 16, 2016.

If sonny boy thinks the Russian hacking “story” was similar to the bad intelligence run-up to invading Iraq I think it is a pretty good guess daddy Sanders believed it too.

Levi has Bernie’s back just the same as Donny Jr. has The Big Don’s.

Damn 2016 had a lot of bad crap going on. I want to move on from 2016. One good way would be for the Democratic party to separate itself from the Sanders.

Assuming Trump is still around for 2020 (I don’t them Democrats and what passes for reasonable Republicans will hold 67 Senate seats if impeachment happens), running someone else in their late 70s seems like a terrible idea.

Quite frankly, both parties need to get younger in elected office. Part of that seems to be the internal opposition to Feinstien in the California Democratic Party (she failed to secure the party’s endorsement at the party convention last weekend).

I know that lawhawk. What I mean is the Democratic party helps him out. Time to make it clear that will not happen again so that his son Levi gets the message and we don’t repeat it all over again.

I just reread that Rolling Stone article and now I have a headache. Taibbi seems to be crying about the Bush gang manipulating intelligence reports ruining the relationship with the media citing Judith Miller. So back in December of 20167 we couldn’t trust anything about the original Russian hacking at all until the government puts out a report that has all the Ts crossed and the Is dotted with pictures and recording of the evil doers. Or, it didn’t happen.

That does no one any good. Suspicion is good, sure. But denial on a new story based on previous acts by a completely different White House/Government is dangerous.

I wonder if Taibbi is just fine with Trump ignoring intelligence and just using his ‘good brain and being like real smart.’

So, if we are told by U.S. intelligence that an invasion is imminent…don’t fall for it because we can’t trust our government. Just wait for the bombs and then you will know.

I’m not that familiar with Vermont election laws, but since Bernie Sanders is technically an “Independent”, might he not simply prevail (due to name-recognition, etc.) with a plurality against a registered “Democrat” or “Republican”?

I agree that the seemingly endless promotion of Sanders really does little to help Democrats - for all the problems with a two-party system, it is what we have to deal with (leftwing fantasies aside), and would provide a lot more leverage for the portside if they got on the Dem bandwagon: even if reluctantly.

Just IMO, “purity” tests are (as they usually are for the extremes of a political spectrum) pretty much a recipe for irrelevance. Right-wing purity-ponies tend to reflexively vote for Republicans, even where the candidates may or may not be (ideologically) in their pockets: they know they can at least exert some influence on them. Lefties, OTOH, seem to prefer to whinge away about “corporate Democrats” or whatever and threaten to take their toys and go home if the Party doesn’t put up precisely the candidate they prefer, and to hell with the damage.

Case in point: the 2016 election. QED.

Popping in on a long thread from the ICU.

They found more infected tissue this morning that has to be removed. So no skin grafts today. No going home in 10 days. We’re waiting for the surgeon to come and for an operating room. He’s in a burn unit ICU right now, it’s the only place near us that can do this kind of surgery. The current estimate is at least two to three weeks in the hospital.

I feel sick and sad and scared. I’m alone with no help, the only friends who have really tried to help live too far away to be here. I know this isn’t about me and I’m trying to be brave. It’s so hard.

I was reading comments on other boards regarding Black Panther and many of the comments noted that theaters in their locales were still full. Also…..it has yet to open in Japan and China - it opens on 1 March in Japan and 9 March in China.

We saw it on Saturday, because all the good seats were sold out on Friday, and we could only get mediocre seats when booking more than a day in advance. DALLAS — An analysis released Monday by the libertarian Cato Institute shows that unauthorized immigrants and legal immigrants in Texas commit proportionally fewer crimes than the native-born population.

The study found that unauthorized immigrants had a criminal conviction rate 56 percent below that of the native-born people, said Alex Nowrasteh, a Cato immigration analyst and the study’s author.

“And that tells us this is not a population that commits a lot of crime,” Nowrasteh said. “If it is true of Texas, it has got to be true in much of the United States.”

Legal immigrants — a category that includes immigrants who became U.S. citizens — have even lower rates of criminal convictions, at 85 percent below the native-born, the study found. “Legal immigrants are much more law-abiding than virtually any other group in our society,” Nowrasteh said.

At the Center for Immigration Studies, a conservative think tank that advocates for more immigration restrictions, executive director Mark Krikorian said, “A lot of data does suggest immigrants are less likely to be involved in crime.”

But the quality of the data hasn’t been good in past studies, said Krikorian, who hadn’t seen Nowrasteh’s report yet. Regardless, Krikorian said, “Even a single crime by one immigrant is bad because they are not supposed to be here.”

The study uses data from the Texas Department of Public Safety. Unlike other states such as California and Illinois, Texas law enforcement cooperates closely with federal immigration agencies, bolstering the accuracy of the data because of the sharing of details such as fingerprints, Nowrasteh said.

I am quite sure they could revoke my citizenship any time they wanted to, even though I’ve had it nearly 20 years, I am a native English-speaking white guy who has paid his taxes (most of them anyway) for the forty years since I got my green card.

Seriously, I do feel part of the “first they came for undocumented …” category, even though it’s very, very unlikely to happen. Unless I get too vocal AND effective, and I should be so lucky.

I just responded to that over at Daily Kos and read some of the other responses there.
1. A lot of Democrats responded with “We need to do something.”
2. Remember how quickly we moved on after the shooting, because so many of us had other things/projects.

Why didn’t any other group think to organize marches against gun violence?

What makes these kids special is they don’t have other things they’d like to get done. They are good at what they are doing and are doing what they are good at. They don’t have keeping abortion legal. They don’t have ending gerrymandering. They don’t have raising minimum wage or getting housing. Why it’s sticking is they aren’t moving on.

Edit: They also don’t think the NRA has won.

Infowars one strike away from YouTube ban

The channel said it received an alert from YouTube on Tuesday morning, saying Infowars received a second strike on a video about the Parkland, Fla., high school shooting and will temporarily be unable to upload new content.

“This is the second strike applied to your account within three months. As a result, you’re unable to post new content to YouTube for two weeks,” the alert said. “If there are no further issues, the ability to upload will be automatically restored after this two week period.”

CATO is Koch Brothers. They are pushing hard. I would expect some of their other organizations to be heard from in the same manner.

I-Team: Wisconsin babies licensed to hunt

Fifty-two kids ages five and under including 10 babies were registered to hunt in Wisconsin in Fall of 2017.

The I-Team went to find out who these children are, and if they’re really firing guns.

There’s really no way even for the Department of Natural Resources to know if those children participated in a hunt unless they register a kill. The youngest person to do so was a four-year-old.

With the new law eliminating an age limit to get a license, it’s up to parents. Some think those parents are taking home extra game. But, for Morgan Jones, it’s a bonding moment between father and son.

Fwiw, I think that we are already in a war, a cyberwar with Russia. And due to the abysmal leadership we currently have, we are losing.

I do not see any signs that this will drift into a deliberate ‘kinetic’ war (bombs, bullets, missiles, etc.) though. And as China’s power is still growing, I would hazard to guess that they will be generally content to be patient.
