Another One Down: Hope Hicks Resigning as White House Communications Director

Politics • Views: 36,535

A day after testifying to the House Intelligence Committee that she occasionally lied in her job as White House Communications Director (just little ol’ “white lies,” she said), Hope Hicks is now resigning. I’d say “suddenly resigning,” but she claims she’s been considering it for a while and given this crew of villains it might even be true.

Next comes the book deal announcement.

just sitting back and looking at the enormity of the task that awaits Dems if they can wrest control of the government from these crooks and traitors. While it gives me pause, it also gives me hope that we can rebuild and undo some of the kludge that has affected our country in regards to governance. Going to have to undo roughly 50 years of GOP ratfuckery and actually incorporate our ideals of good governance into actual law.

It used to be that any nominee who wasn’t going to get a majority would be pulled, since there was no consensus.

True. But they sure could send a wicked message to the people of Georgia by announcing they are going to look into a move. And that message would go right to the statehouse with everyone asking the Lt. Governor and Governor what the hell they are doing.

Firearm-related injuries drop during NRA conventions

I think this says a lot more about diehard NRA members than gun owners in general

Nationally, the rate of firearm injury dropped from 1.5 per 100,000 on the dates adjacent to the convention to 1.2 per 100,000 during the convention itself. And in the state where the convention was held, the injury rate went from 1.9 down to 0.7 per 100,000.

There are 5MM total NRA members. Even assuming that Georgia has a higher percentage of those members, I can’t imagine that there would be much more than 150k, and that’s probably pushing it. So these fuckers are going to scrap a tax break that impact far more Georgia citizens because Delta won’t give NRA members discounts? I mean, what the hell?

I’m just plain enjoying the fact the students in Florida have completely blown many a conservative off their typical bullshit games. The biggest benefit is the conservatives only have one game and that is to lash out and criticize and blame everything on liberals and it is making them look real bad to America.

Will many stick with the NRA and guns? Sure thing. But there will be many gun people and even NRA members that will tell them all to take a hike and never buy their bullying bullshit again.

Side benefit potential: Dana Loesch, Ted Nugent and others will look good when we don’t have to see them again.

True story. There was one teacher at my old high school authorized to handle firearms on school property. He was an army sergeant and was the ROTC instructor. One morning a couple of students found him dead on the floor. He’d been shot in the head with a .22 rifle, which was lying next to him. The theory was that he’d been cleaning the rifle for rifle team practice and somehow had shot himself accidentally. There was also speculation that he’d done it on purpose, but I never could believe that someone who knew much about weapons would choose a .22 to commit suicide with.

But WTF, arm the teachers.

Eh, arguing policy is fine, personal attacks not so much (see SMOTI). But this line was interesting:

Suffering through a terrible crime gives a person no special insight into its causes, and Hogg has no special insight into its causes — or, frankly, into anything else.

That is an incredibly foolish line. He knew (or at least knew of) the shooter. He saw the weapons used to kill several people just like him. And beyond that, even if it doesn’t give you insight into the cause, it gives you insight into the - for lack of a better word - execution of those crimes. Hogg saw first hand the effect that the business end of semi-automatic weapons have on people. Talking about the tools of said crime when you’ve seen them in action is pretty fucking simple, isn’t it?

I can see how it’s almost a criticism of those “using” Hogg in the debate. But it’s just not focused enough to get there and instead veers off to criticizing Hogg directly for being a 17 year old high school student, or something. And in doing so, it completely misses the point it was probably intending to make.

It also misses the entire point (probably on purpose) of the current gun control debate. That is: semi-automatic weapons are not appropriate for civilian use.

The effectiveness of self-inflicted gunshots is over-rated in the popular mind. About 16% survive at least as long as the trip to the hospital. My FIL used a .40, and lasted a week—long enough that his terminal cancer was, in fact, terminal.

You see a fair amount of this type of thing on cop dramas and in mystery novels, but what the actual stats are I have no idea. Even on TV the shooter usually fires a couple of rounds when using a small gun, to make sure. One of my favorite hitters is Clara Rinker, featured in three or four of John Sandford’s great “Prey” books. She uses mostly .22s, especially in ricochet-prone environments such as concrete stairwells. In “Certain Prey” she uses a silenced .22 and shoots the victim seven times in the head.

Until we get a federal solution, we’re going to get these incremental, non-uniform, solutions. And, enacting this as a federal ban wouldn’t prevent mom from stocking weapons for her kid to use.

These are better than nothing, while a federal law will be better, which won’t prevent all cases. We just have to keep pushing.

He was supportive of the Mueller probe, but continues to push the “Trump’s too stupid to conspire” line and “irregardless of whether they met with the Russians, there’s nothing illegal about that.” Then he got hammered and had to admit that the doesn’t know the law, but it doesn’t feel illegal.

Trump has derisively referred to Sessions as “Mr. Magoo,” a cartoon character who is elderly, myopic and bumbling. He tells people he’s hired the best lawyers his entire life and is now stuck with Sessions. washingtonpost.com

7:11 PM - Feb 28, 2018

This adds to what Nicole Wallace and her guests were talking about this afternoon. They were saying you can tell Mueller has his target in sight and has been going back around and tying things together.

Extra pushing on Gates and Manafort, asking about Donny Jr. and the Russian hack of DNC and how that ties together, Revisiting if Trump has been constantly pushing on Sessions to quit, all fit that pattern.

And then there was the big surprise of the Russian hackers being identified. Which may have been the big reveal and why he went back to pushing on Manafort.

I’m sure hoping the target is who I am hoping it is, as we all are. But still too early to get too confident. Looking good though.

And another thought with what has gone down today.

Is Trump appearing to be tough on guns and may even try to push through legislation the NRA and Republican politicians will go nuts over a try to save his ass by looking Presidential? Maybe he thinks he can save his butt by pulling off something like gun control policy.

With Trump…one never knows.

Reading ‘Trouble Boys’ may not make him like the Replacements. I read it and my impression is that the books makes them look like really mean drunks. It’s kind of a lesson in how to fuck up a career.

I’m going to have to look for that at the library. I am just getting started reading “Reckless - My Life as a Pretender” by Chrissie Hynde.

re: #270 Barefoot Grin

OT: my younger boy read War and Peace when he was twelve because he read in a Calvin and Hobbes strip how hard it was. He agreed. Didn’t understand a lot, but finished it. A month ago he picked my copy of Don Quixote from my bookshelf. He finished it a couple of days ago and understood it pretty well, he said (he read the translator’s intro this time). It’s his 14th birthday soon. What does he want for his birthday? Another big classic? “Dad, can you get me Trouble Boys: The True Story of The Replacements? and “All Shook Up”?” Not sure how I feel about this, but it’s not like he hasn’t encountered drunkenness and wanton mayhem in the fiction we’ve let him read already.

Double OT before I get some more work done before bed: I love most of what Lucinda has done, but I pulled “Essence” out tonight and just fell in love again. “Gonna have to steal your love…..” Oh man.

I’d get him The ‘Mat’s book & a classics literature novel as well. Perhaps Hemmingway’s best work, A Farewell to Arms?

Oh, and was that “All Shook Down” the Replacement’s last LP? Or something else?

Oh, and don’t forget the excellent ‘Mat’s documentary “Color Me Obsessed” en.wikipedia.org

Of the people I know from back in the day, the drug that really defined things wasn’t heroin or pot, but alcohol.

I went to college in ‘72 and really got into the bands then. Then I hung out with and had bands with friends from ‘78 to around ‘92. Still wrote and made self CDs up to four years ago with a full band setup. Now down to me (drums, guitar) and another guitarist and about 15 songs I’d love to record.

I do know what you talk about. I have been around of lot of people that were going in all kinds of directions. And as an art college student in the 70s, lord knows I was always around about every drug known to man.

I was just lucky that I never wanted to get all fucked up. If anything I just wanted to have fun and create.

One dear friend in an alt band that did a recording for Rick Rubin in my basement with my 8 track commited suicide a few years after nothing worked out for him like he had hoped working with Rubin. He went down a deep dark road. We all learned from that one as we should have seen it coming. That changed a lot of folks.

And yeah…alcohol. By far as corrosive as anything if taken to the extreme. I learned my lesson fairly early. A couple beers a week is about my extent…or a scotch or two if at a party, concert, etc.

We foreign teachers here have a little chat group on WeChat. One member, a woman who has served in the military for a number of years, made a derogatory remark about Trump in a Southern dialect rendered in text. Another teacher responded with this remark:

“Politics is just better left alone on this forum. We also have people here who think Mr Trump is doing an excellent job and is exactly what American needs to restore the country economically and strategically.”

FWIW, I think “people” refers only to that one guy, because we only have five Americans on staff, and four of us are anti-Trump.

The guy who posted that remark is a nice enough fellow, if a little odd in some ways. I’m surprised he is such a fanboi of Trump, because Trump is certainly doing nothing to improve the USA in any way, shape or form.

makeitstop  Feb 28, 2018 • 6:57:48pm

Omarosa was not exaggerating.

Aides for President Trump have compiled folders to keep track of attacks Republican lawmakers and others levy against the president, The Washington Post reported Wednesday.

The newspaper reported that aides have documented criticisms made by Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) and other detractors about the president.

In Corker’s case, they reportedly used the remarks to remind Trump of the senator’s past comments and convince him not to fully support Corker if he were to re-enter this year’s midterm race.

Aides reportedly reminded the president of the remarks to make sure he would not back the senator if he changed his mind. They said they did not want the feud brought back to the public’s attention, according to the Post.

Do we suppose that if Kushner’s business empire goes pftttt, that he and Ivanka have enough money squirreled away to keep living the high life? Presumably they are insulated from their real estate debts, but that business is likely the source of their income, along with a bit from Ivanka’s fashion line (which will also presumably go belly up when her name is a bit less sparkly.)

Trump complained about the AF1 project when it was set to cost $4 billion.

Boeing managed to find 2 747-8 planes that were already built and negotiated a deal with USAF to buy ‘em at discount. That’s where all the savings is coming from.

USAF lucked into this because a Russian airline went bankrupt and the planes were never delivered to the airline. Boeing had them in storage and the company will now use the airframe as basis for the new AF1s.

The savings is that they’re able to build out the planes sooner.

Trump had absolutely nothing to do with wringing out any savings here.

It was luck that Boeing had the planes on hand.

Not likely.

Trump has been highly leveraged for years, and Kushner’s been on the razor’s edge himself with his properties leveraged to the hilt.

In fact the reason that all the money deals are looking weird and suspect is because all of a sudden Kushner’s now able to buy out Vornado at 666 Fifth Avenue after that property was lagging without a buyer. Follow the money.
