Speaking of constitutional amendments (in the previous thread), it amazes me that they ever got the one passed that outlawed booze.

Even that one we changed and then changed back

Which is actually a better argument than cars, I think. It directly points out that:
1. There are more rights than are just listed in the Bill of Rights or they wouldn’t have needed an amendment to end it.
2. That even though we have made alcohol legal, we have put restrictions on it for reasons having to do with life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness of the general population.

Graham Gouldman - Bus Stop

The director and/or editor of this clip should be shot. Gouldman always starts off his live shows with his solo guitar and each song after introduces yet another instrument. 1+2+3+4 etc. The video makes it appear that Gouldman, an amazingly talented songwriter, is accompanied by two forelorn-looking zombies, which is far from the truth.

I blame MTV. Anywho, it’s a great song.

Go to the LBJ Library at UT since you are in the neighborhood. It’s a great historical center.

Oh, and the breakfast tacos in Austin are Killer Bee. We don’t really have taco trucks, they’re mostly repurposed Airstream and bespoke trailers.

Indeed. That is one of my favorite things to do, to spend a day road tripping to see wildflowers. Last year a friend and I went with our boys - had lunch at a wonderful tapas place in Brenham that allowed dogs. (Since we had never taken the boys to a restaurant before we decided it was best to try it out of town first just in case =O.) Came back by a different route to see more bluebonnets, paintbrush, fields of color. Very fun day.

I think I may do that again this year. :)

One of the best concerts I ever attended was Waylon at a not very large joint called the Stumble Inn, in Tucson Arizona, in the mid-1970’s. Jessie Colter was the opening act, and a grand old time was had by all (and we’re still talking about it all these years later).

Hayes is a national hero in Paraguay.
This goes back to 1878 when he was asked to arbitrate a territorial dispute between Paraguay and Argentina.. He awarded the territory to Paraguay. One province and its capital city are named for him. That is not all:

….an official holiday: Laudo Hayes Firm Day, the anniversary of the decision, celebrated in Presidente Hayes province; a local soccer team: Presidente Hayes soccer club (also known as “Los Yanquis”), based in the national capital, Asuncion; a postage stamp, the design of which was chosen in a contest run by the U.S. Embassy; and even a young girl’s wish: a girl who came out of a coma got her fondest wish—a trip to the Hayes Presidential Center in Fremont, Ohio

It probably wouldn’t have happened without World War I whipping up anti German hysteria. German immigrants brought beer with them, it quickly became popular, and the rapid spread of brewery associated saloons of that era were quickly demonized by many as a public blight and organizing point for subversive political movements. That allowed the temperance crusaders to take a ready made external enemy and associate it with the public face of drunkenness.

Looks like Roy Moore is facing financial bankruptcy - I think that’s maniacally appropriate, as it’ll match his moral bankruptcy quite nicely. In any event, he’s begging for money, blaming “the political Left”, which, according to Moore, “is filled with men and women whose sole aim in life is to overthrow our God-ordained rights which are guaranteed in the U.S. Constitution”.

Thoughts and prayers, jackhole.

Roy Moore

After reading about his latest fundraising appeal, I was glad to find out he hasn’t come anywhere close to the $250,000 he says he needs to defend himself against Leigh Corfman’s lawsuit. He seems to have spent every year since he became a judge and politician begging for money from others. Grifting has benefited him well throughout the years, and I suppose he sees no reason to stop now. He might still have his license to practice law in Alabama and could defend himself since he is a former prosecutor and has trial experience. You were kind in offering him thoughts and prayers. If I could talk to him face-to-face, I’d say things that would set his entire body on fire.

Young Republicans Push for Action on Climate Change (goes to The Verge)

First guess: The GOP will try to marginalise the Young Republicans on this issue. They haven’t finished looting the country yet.

Second guess: Eventually, said young conservative voters will become a majority of their party - the question being whether it’s too late to save the party or no.

Millenials are soon to be the largest voting bloc in the USA. (That said, a lot of MIllenials are not Republicans.) They will be able to exert pressure on GOP politicians at the ballot box if they can primary wingnuts out of office.

More at the link, the lede:

Kiera O’Brien, a 19-year-old government student at Harvard and president of the Harvard Republican Club, grew up in Ketchikan, Alaska, where she spent lots of time outdoors, hiking and fishing. “I have always had a deep respect for nature and have really cared about climate and wilderness and the preservation of both,” she says.

So the fact that her own party — the GOP — has had a track record of ignoring climate change, or even denying that it’s caused by human activity, has been frustrating to her. “To see national Republicans failing to have a coherent strategy and policy surrounding this issue has been difficult,” O’Brien tells The Verge.

England is exporting its wingnuts. Nigel Farage, Milo Yiannopolis, &c. Katie Hopkins has not yet left to help out our conservatives here. From her Wikipedia entry (the lede):

Katie Olivia Hopkins (born 13 February 1975) is an English media personality. She first came to notice in 2007 as a reality television contestant and later became a columnist for British newspapers, initially The Sun (from October 2013) and later the MailOnline (from autumn 2015 until 2017).

Hopkins has been accused of racism by journalists, advocacy groups and politicians for her comments about migrants. Her role as a presenter for the radio station LBC was terminated in May 2017 following her comments on Twitter about the Manchester Arena bombing.

Hi folks,

This is a photo of writer Joan Didion receiving an honor at the White House.

I know previous administrations (including those I hated, such as the shrub’s) did this sort of thing all the time.

Serious question: Does the current crew of villains ever hold these kind of events? I never see any mention.

I’m out for a while (need to go to town later).

We have plenty of wingnut Catholics here as well, such as the folk who funded the “Our Lady of Peace” statue in Pine Bluffs, Wyo. (Pine Bluffs is right on the state line with Nebraska.) It is visible all over town, from I-80 and US-30, and from Nebraska.

Located directly off Intersate-80 in Pine Bluffs, Wyoming stands the largest Marian Statue in the United States.

The sculpture is 30 feet (5 stories) high, and weighs 180 tons. Erected in 1998, by Ted and Marjorie Trefren this Shrine greets Interstate travelers everyday in any kind of weather.

Robert Fida was commissioned to design and sculpt Our Lady of Peace Shrine.

Take exit 401 at Pine Bluffs and follow the signs

The WVa. House passed a resolution for a 5% pay raise and other raises in the future, but the Senate president decided to go all fiscal conservative and the Senate defeated the measure.

Thus the teachers’ strike is back on.

Still better than nothing: although, in today’s political environment, “nothing” is a form of improvement itself: since most firearms legislation these days seems to be focused exclusively on expanding access to guns, and on removing even the thinnest of controls on their sales, possession or carrying.

IIRC, the last AWB passed Constitutional muster: it may not have been ideal, but at least it was a start.

If there were one national registry & the safety regulations were thus the same for all states, then the manufacturers would have an incentive to have their models approved. And yes, I do think there are a number of things about that process needing change. I sold an N-frame S&W 625 Mountain Gun in .45 Colt (sigh…) to a California resident. I had to pull a part from the action to make it into a single action revolver and mail the part in a separate envelope. She could then, fully legally, replace the part and have a fully functional double action revolver again. Pure stupidity.

It’s the “top of the heap” mentality, that so long as America comes out on top, even if the rest of the world is a smoldering wreck, then we win.

We learned it after WWII, when we decided that being the country that took the least direct hit in the fighting meant we deserved to be the “leader of the free world.”

IIRC, after WWII, there was a serious movement by government (exacerbated by the Republicans’ taking control of Congress after the 1946 elections) to try to return to the traditional American “post-war” practices: i.e. demobilize, demilitarize and return to a more-or-less isolationist foreign policy. Pay off those millions of GIs with “The Thanks of Their Country”, and send them back into the civilian economy - which, since so much else of the world really was a “smoldering wreck” - would be booming.*
The main thing that changed that (at least IMH**O) was the fact that the only other major Power to come out of the war in an “improved”*** geopolitical position was the Soviet Union: seen (and not unjustifiably) as an aggressive, expansionist power; and one basically opposed to the US in most everything. The isolationists may not have cared, but the prospect of even greater Soviet influence was scary enough to convince the Truman Admin to shuck the wartime marriage-of-convenience with Stalin, and take a more aggressive role in international “leadership”. Which turned out, in the short term anyway, to be quite profitable besides.

* True.

I can imagine them having that worry, but seems paranoid to me given a well developed China. Plus you can’t be a regional superpower in that region without nukes. Unless you posit NK takes over, the nukes would be gotten rid of, the program ended.

Thank you for the info.

Prior to 1931, we didn’t really need national symbols. We we’re either a good country or we weren’t. But, in the middle of the Great Depression? I suspect Republicans were hungry for anything to get people to be willing to suffer under the cause of patriotism.

When I’m president, I want to pass a law declaring that on March 3rd, all Americans will sing the National Anthem on that day, and only that day. Stop ruining its effect by having it butchered over and over. I would propose a similar thing for the pledge.

Controversial opinion time: I’ve never liked the US national anthem. Not only because of the weird melody, but the militaristic subject matter and, even worse, subtext that could be seen as pro-slavery.

“America the Beautiful” as a national anthem would be so much better, I feel…

That was cited in WWII stories as the more likely song to be heard in POW camps, probably for its singability.

There is a distinction, but, at the same time, we will have to address existing guns. Now, no, we’re not going to send cops into homes, but we will want to do something to reduce the existing guns, or at least make it very hard to transfer them.

I agree in general. I see a set of priorities. Like illegal immigration, focus first on criminal possession. Twofer, felon jailed and guns smelted. Then those that lose the right, be it restraining orders, violent criminal charges, lose their minds. Then we look at transfer very carefully. Family inheritance is not like a local gun show sale, even in California where there is no show or private party transfer loophole. If California would not impede out of state transfers via DROS we would have less assault weapons here. Many details.

Prohibition did not prohibit the use of sacramental wine in church services though.

Grandma Bacon told me that during Prohibition Catholic and Episcopal churches did switch to grape juice instead of wine because of pressure from the KKK. The KKK was extremely powerful in the 1920s.

There’s another great tune that, although it’s a more or less de facto national anthem, isn’t the official one, so maybe we could steal it: “Waltzing Matilda.” Unlike “The Star-Spangled Banner,” it’s pleasant to listen to and as easy to sing as “Happy Birthday.” Plus there’s not an ounce of nationalism or militarism in it, so that, among other things, abominations like fighter-jet flyovers at the start of sporting events would become so ridiculous as to vanish overnight.

I think so too but also proximity. I see a lot of people love to cry out Chicago in attempts to shut down the discussion while ignoring the proximity to Indiana of the city. Likewise DC is close to Virginia.

They love to cry out “Chicago” because it’s associated with Obama. There are at least eleven other large US cities, and probably lots of medium-sized ones, with higher rates of gun homicide than Chicago.

Real 21st century crime:

“Big Bitcoin Heist”: 600 powerful computers stolen in Iceland

Some 600 computers used to “mine” bitcoin and other virtual currencies have been stolen from data centers in Iceland in what police say is the biggest series of thefts ever in the North Atlantic island nation. Some 11 people were arrested, including a security guard, in what Icelandic media have dubbed the “Big Bitcoin Heist.” A judge at the Reykjanes District Court on Friday ordered two people to remain in custody.

The powerful computers, which have not yet been found, are worth almost $2 million. But if the stolen equipment is used for its original purpose — to create new bitcoins — the thieves could turn a massive profit in an untraceable currency without ever selling the items.

A dud of a storm for us. So far less than a tenth of an inch of rain.

Radar shows a few showers heading this way but they are not very big.

We’re still too dry. Rainfall this season has not been what we need.

Loquats around the neighborhood (well, the ones that have not been cut down) are doing ok but they have been stunted from a couple of years of little rain.

Just drove through it to airport. The 15 was flooded in places! Not fun.

The internet has made the world profoundly weird.

I say this because, when I moved 3000 miles across the country in 1982, I took it as a given that I’d only ever see the place I grew up in my own pictures, or when I went back to visit.

Now, 36 years later, I can sit here, sucking down my morning coffee, and looking at real estate listings on Zillow, for a house up the street from Mom and Dad’s place, and in a picture of the yard from the back window I can see the two big Oak trees in my old back yard.

And for some reason, this is making my eyes a little moist.

I do so want to see this Trump go to jail.

Ivanka Trump: Born to legitimize corruption and make the shoddy look cute

The so-called first daughter proves that “laundering” applies to more than money. She washes and gilds just about everything she touches. Consider her warehouses upon warehouses of petroleum-based separates, many of them sewn for poverty pay in sweatshops. When you call this schmatte smorgasboard the Ivanka Trump Collection it does brisk business — if not on Rodeo Drive, then in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.

She has the same magic touch with the multitudes of flesh-and-blood rogues who flock to her for redemption. It’s Ivanka who first brought Gen. Michael “Lied to the FBI” Flynn into the administration, according to the New Yorker; she praised him for his “amazing loyalty” and offered him his choice of positions at a transition-team meeting. One person present said, “It was like Princess Ivanka had laid the sword on Flynn’s shoulders and said, ‘Rise and go forth.’”

The laying on of that princess sword seems to be Ivanka’s favorite pastime. In 2006, when she was 25, she toured Moscow with Felix Sater, who in 1998 pleaded guilty to a $40-million stock fraud scheme run by the Russian mafia. She also collaborated with the Soviet-born businessman Tamir Sapir, whose top aide in 2004 pleaded guilty to a racketeering conspiracy with the Gambino crime family.

It’s impossible to keep track of all the gangsters Ivanka has palled around with. But what’s truly damning are the shady real-estate projects she has made rise and go forth.

In 2006, she oversaw the development of the Trump Ocean Club International Hotel and Tower in Panama City. The project was connected to a Brazilian money launderer later arrested for fraud and forgery as well as a Russian investor who’d previously been jailed in Israel for kidnapping. On Wednesday, a dispute between Trump’s company and the building’s owner turned violent. The journalist Marcy Wheeler has suggested the fight concerns records that may show Ivanka knew the property was laundering money. Police in riot gear stormed the hotel that Ivanka once hyped as “exemplary of the grandeur in which we like to enter a market.”

Ivanka was also a ranking official on the Trump SoHo, which has since shed the name Trump. In 2010, as ProPublica and WNYC have reported, the Manhattan District Attorney’s office began building a criminal case against Ivanka and Donald Trump Jr. for using inflated sales figures to defraud prospective buyers. After receiving a visit from Trump family lawyer and campaign donor Marc Kasowitz, then-DA Cyrus Vance Jr. backed off.

I think it’s important to separate belief or nonbelief in a god or gods from worldview. To me, nonbelief in a god or gods is not an organizing principle. Unfu…. nope. It’s unfuckingbelievable.

GOP votes on voice vote for a moratorium on AR-15 sales for 2 years. Minutes later they reverse course.

Did they not read what they were voting on? Or did the NRA yank their chain. And if they did, Florida voters need to yank the GOP’s chain even harder and send them into the dustbin of history.

Florida has among the weakest gun laws in the nation, and their per capita death rate from gun violence is higher than many states.

Any gun control measures would end up reducing gun deaths (and reduce health care costs too).

Now, when the NRA meets for their annual conference, the gun violence rate declined nationally during the duration of the conference.

Just imagine the RussisrepubliKKKlan meltdown if Obama had been exposed having an affair with Stormy Daniels? Impeachment would have been passed within 60 seconds of Fox “reporting” that!

If Obama with five kids by three women and the record of talking about women the way Trump has and imagine him being viable as a candidate for the Senate let alone the presidency.

Imagine HRC with Trumps inexperience and ignorance being viable too. Trump is where he is because the GOP electorate wanted an unapologetic bigot after years of bigot wink and nudgers.

This is like when Trump was talking to Merkel and said something about German car companies should build their cars here. And Merkel, I think, looked at him like he was nuts, because they DO build A LOT of their cars here, and in fact we EXPORT a lot of them to the rest of the world.

But he’s so fucking stupid he thinks ‘German car = Made In Germany’.

He also doesn’t understand that domestic automakers have (or, in GM’s case, had) foreign subsidiaries that built automobiles in Europe for European consumption. Ford UK, Vauxhall, Opel, and others were started by US automakers.

It should be obviou

And you know what bugs me SO MUCH about that? Knowing Christians who are nothing like what “Christian” has come to mean in America today.

I’m atheist so maybe I’m not really the person to judge what is and isn’t Christianity, but, you know, MY take on the NT is that Jesus was on Earth to tell people that it’s up to us to make Earth the Kingdom of Heaven. That is, a place without hate, without war, without want, without fear. And the Christians I know see it that way and work to try to make it that way.

As a believer, all I can say is that seems obvious. Jesus is not about heaven - not about pie in the sky by the by - but about taking care of your neighbor with the understanding that everyone is your neighbor. The greatest sin I can imagine is to do nothing while waiting for an imaginary afterlife of joy instead of making someone’s life better here and now.

Ah, well there are many shades of grey in this world and only two of them are black and white.

This is where the social control aspect of Christianity, what you might call the Selling of Christianity, comes in. Making the Earth into the Kingdom of Heaven is hard work that requires being a better person than you would otherwise be.

OTOH, if you’re trying to get Everyman to toil and suffer his whole life under lousy conditions and simply accept what is, you offer the promise of Heaven as a reward, and tell them the shittier their life is on Earth, the better it will be in heaven.

Then of course you have to deal with people saying, “Well, hell - might as well end it now and get to Heaven sooner!”, so you have to make suicide a Mortal Sin!

On a TV-related note, has anyone here seen American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace?

I haven’t had a chance to watch it yet, but I did see a couple of clips and it looks damn good. Edgar Ramirez is a favorite of mine (I remember him from Carlos) and Penelope Cruz is always good. And Darren Criss, who plays Andrew Cunanan, damn….the clips I saw look like a star-making performance.

And the Borgias probably weren’t as luridly guignol as they’ve come down to us. The men were venal and ambitious—and good at it, coming closer to developing an Italian empire under Cesare than anyone would achieve for awhile—and Lucretia was probably just a normal teenage girl used as a arranged-marriage football.

The Italians intriguing over the Papacy hated them because they were Spanish, and Pope Julius (delle Rovere) ran a smear campaign that’s not too different from the sort of crap we see these days. And it’s not a coincidence that the teenage girl got the worst reputation of all, because the people running the Italian city states were basically garbage people.

Don’t be silly; get blood all over that fine furniture and rugs? And then have to clean up the body? Never.

They’d give you a good meal, an exquisite meal in fact, with poison in it so you’d die hours later in your own house.
