If we want to win, we have to accept these people back with open arms.

The MSM should be held accountable for the fact that many voters who are not into politics with the same interest as we are and who are focused on raising a family and paying the mortgage were not really aware of how terrible he actually was. If you listened to only a few of his speeches, he really connected with those who are the losers in the modern economy. People want the middle class lives that our parents had — where a working class family had a comfortable life — and company-provided benefits. They didn’t hear Trump’s comments that Americans were too highly paid — because the media and the Democrats failed to tell them.

It’s fine to insult them in this forum. But not when trying to recruit them back to the truth or when they return on their own — let them come to this conclusion on their own. It’s the MSM who is responsible for many of the Obama supporters who switched to Trump — they are the ones who should be insulted and held accountable in public forums.

When we last checked in on shamed neo-Nazi hanger-on Baked Alaska, he had been kicked off Twitter and was livestreaming some sort of talk show from what certainly seemed to be his mom’s house in Alaska. This was just the latest in the troll’s long string of humiliations, which include possibly macing himself (see above), getting owned by a little kid, getting his phone shattered by a woman he was trying to hit on, and spending a long time creepily hitting on an 13-year-old girl. YouTube (and his mom’s house) had come to feel like a sort of final resting place for the onetime “alt-right” figurehead, a channel where he could cut out the filter and vomit edgelord provocation directly into the garbage bins of his viewers’ minds.

If we want to win, we have to accept these people back with open arms.

That doesn’t mean that we have to give them what they want in order to get their vote. They wanted the Trump Republican lies.

The MSM should be held accountable for the fact that many voters who are not into politics with the same interest as we are and who are focused on raising a family and paying the mortgage were not really aware of how terrible he actually was. If you listened to only a few of his speeches, he really connected with those who are the losers in the modern economy. They didn’t hear Trump’s comments that Americans were too highly paid — because the media and the Democrats failed to tell them.

Hillary was spelling all this stuff out every day in her campaign. If she failed, it wasn’t for lack of her trying. She couldn’t promise them a return to our way of life in the 50’s because those days are dead and gone, and in a lot of ways, good f-ing riddance.

These people voted for Trump because they wanted to believe lies. If they’re smarter about it now, good for them, but we don’t have to give them that bullshit again to make them side with us.

They knew he was a dangerous buffoon and still voted him into the most powerful political position in the world. Outrageous. But of course we welcome their votes and change of hearts. Trump hasn’t changed so why they voted for him in 2016 is a mystery.

re: #6 Hecuba’s daughter

If we want to win, we have to accept these people back with open arms.

Not completely.

What Trump is was not a secret. It was blatantly obvious to anyone and everyone who watched. While the NYT and CNN are desperately trying to give Trump voters excuses, they will simply embrace the next fascist who comes along unless they are held accountable for their actions and choices. If an acquaintance willingly and maliciously does something that he knows will hurt me or my loved ones, and then wants to make peace and be invited back into my circle, I’ll take him back, but there has to be apology and restitution. If he wants me to take him back while still insisting that his idea was right but the optics or something was wrong, then fuck that.

The counterargument to that is the same one David Brooks and his ilk make - that you have to respect and coddle redstaters and Trumpers so they don’t feel attacked, so their feelings aren’t hurt, otherwise they’ll stubbornly insist on doing more evil. Well, that’s gotten us exactly where we are today with regards to racism, fascism, guns, and everything else. No more. It’s not okay to blame everyone else for their malice. It’s not okay to rely on your white privilege to be excused for every terrible choice you make. It’s not okay to vote Trump and then declare that it was just a passing fad.

We don’t need them to win. That’s the same fallacy that leads us to argue that they need to be coddled and respected. That’s the same fallacy that leads us to believe that the opinions of mediocre white men and women are the most important ones, because we ‘need them to win’. We don’t. There are enough people to outnumber them and outvote them. If they want to be on the winning side, they can apologise and work for their spot.

It worked very well! Added just enough hair to liven things up, without sounding canned or digital. And you just can’t beat the compactitude, if you will.

And the bonus - the production company had a pair of Silverface Twins and I used a different one each night. They had one with JBLs that was a big ol’ monster.

And the crew liked my playing enough that they entrusted me with an insanely nice ‘66 ES-345 from their collection for the show last night! That rig was…pretty special.

Okay, re: AT&T.

I am not a networking expert but my understanding is the data free streaming occurs when the relevant data can be correctly processed and identified through AT&Ts network.

Apparently, and I do not know the technical explanation for this, the data has to be running through a device directly connected to the mobile network for the whole thing to bill, but for some reason devices connected using the hotspot feature on your phone or tablet are excluded.

Either there is some kind of network limitation there or AT&T is arbitrarily restricting the feature. The exclusion of the Fire Stick, Apple TV, Roku, etc. has always been there, deep in the fine print but, as I said earlier it’s seldom covered properly by AT&T reps when selling the service to customers.

We have to seek some sort of acknowledgment from those wishing to “undo” their vote for Trump that that vote was more than a simple mistake. Part of dealing with vices like racism, bigotry, resentment, and so forth is acknowledging that they hold sway over you. Else we get the ranks of those who scream “I’M NOT A RACIST” as they quietly nod along to Trump’s foul rants against minorities.

There was a lot less coverage of Trump’s flaws than he deserved, that is true. But that was mostly because they presented her emails with at least equal time, giving the impression that these were somehow equal to his flaws. Any fair and equitable journalism would have resulted in 24/7 coverage of Trump atrocities, and their editorial boards would not have it.

But I don’t think it’s plausible or reasonable for anyone to say, ‘well, I thought Trump was a decent guy, just unconventional’, even with the endless media fluffing he got. If he’d been held up as some sort of paragon, or even someone normal, and people were fooled, then I can buy that. I don’t believe and can’t believe people looked at a man making fun of the disabled and bragging about his penis size on national television and thought that was somehow within the bounds of normal. No, if you lived in the United States, and after that 18 months of campaigning and media coverage you thought Donald fucking Trump was somehow an appropriate president, you weren’t fooled or hoodwinked. You just wanted to express your contempt and anger.

Tell me about it. It sure was not explained.

And I do not understand how I can watch the Directv Now app on a tablet through my Wifi connection, but I need to pay for more internet data on a FireTV device that gets the very same feed through the damn Wifi.

And, if I understand correctly. A Chromecast device would sinc up to my table, so I could get one of those and then sync my table to the TV to achieve the same damn thing. I don’t get it. So much makes no sense.

And it apparently makes no sense to the ATT people as they passed me from tech to tech on the phone. Then they got me a manager on the phone who gave me a number to Directv people who couldn’t help me with Directv Now questions and info as to how it works on my internet data plan.

Then I went to Directv Now online chat and was passed around three times between cell people and internet people that no one seemed to understand my questions and how it all worked.

The final guy I talked to say yes, it nicks your data usage and there is nothing he could do about it except charge me another $30 for unlimited internet.

I have more decisions to make and stuff to research…like can I sync my tablet to the FireTV device or do I try a Chromecast to do it.

re: #39 Targetpractice

We’re not calling for excommunication, we’re seeking an act of contrition. Some small acknowledgment that they have sinned and seek forgiveness for it, not simply welcoming them back into the fold while assuring them that their “best intentions” were understandable.

In theory, perhaps: in (political) reality, probably a pretty bad strategy.
The upcoming elections are a midterm: 435 local elections and 34 statewide ones: while approval/disapproval of the Administration is an unavoidable background to all of them, the last thing the Democrats need, as the default Opposition, is to turn off ANY potential voters. And - whatever one might think of the principle of the thing - demanding any sort of “contrition” from the electorate (outside of what votes they cast in the secrecy of the ballot-box) is probably a sure loser. I have a feeling enough Trump/Republican voters from the last election are suffering from “buyer’s remorse” to shift to a creditable Democrat in the next one. Doing anything - ANYTHING - to turn them off is likely to prove political suicide. And if means swallowing one’s snark and (however grudgingly) embracing the old “let’s look forward, not back” pitch (at least as far as a national strategy), so be it: we can mock the Trumpista fools later (post-impeachment?)….

ADD: but not to forget the apathetic/disinterested stay-at-homes, either: I do agree with the commenters above, that inspiring the non-voters will be a major component of a “blue wave” in November - we can only hope it makes the difference between a “blue wave” and a “blue tsunami”.

That is props! Nice gesture! JBL laden Twins can disable the first 3 rows when used properly.
With a semi-hollow body with buckers?… hoo hoo…. and is that a freaking varitone on that?
Beauty, eh?

Exquisite. I told them my birthday was coming up, but they didn’t take the hint for some reason.

The crew do a pretty big-time Florida-based Beatles tribute, and they’ve got quite a collection of Fab gear, if you will. I spent Saturday afternoon playing about half of them and really took a liking to the 345, and they slipped it into the trailer and sprung it on me at the venue.

The Twin was just a beast. The Fly Rig let me push the front end enough to get the growl without decapitating the audience.

And yes, a Varitone. The 345 is stereo. All the jangle you could ever ask for.

Serious question: If those expressing “buyers remorse” are doing so for the wrong reason (i.e. public perception of Trump) rather than the right one (i.e. his policies/ideas are shit), then what really changes when Trump is gone? Nothing, they still believe their reasons for voting for him were right and will support the next guy who caters to them down the line. The difference is the next guy will not make Trump’s mistakes.

Hey everyone, put some plastic sheets down, because given the “how should we handle semi-repentant trump voters” discussion, your heads will asplode after reading this:

“I voted for him because it was about family and friends,” he said. “Nobody else was saying anything. Hillary Clinton was coming here blowing smoke up everybody’s ass. Hell, I wanted Bernie Sanders”—and he wasn’t the only one, obviously, as Sanders beat Clinton in the primaries in all 55 counties—“but once Bernie Sanders was screwed over by Hillary Clinton, by the way, you had no other option.”

He regrets his vote for Trump.

“Sure do,” he said.

Because?

“Because he hasn’t done shit,” he said. “It’s been a friggin’ circus for a solid year.”

Who said this, might you ask? Why, none other than the populist Democratic state senator who got this recent reception:

re: #65 Jay C

Well, when both these factors go against you, what can you do?

I don’t believe that there are actually a significant number of Trumpers feeling this buyer’s remorse. I don’t really see a ton of evidence of that. And I also don’t believe that not embracing them will be political suicide. Again, that goes to the fallacy of believing that theirs are the only opinions that matter, that they are the real swing voters.

No. A thousand times no. Elections in America are determined by getting more people out, and there are many times more people who do not vote than a tiny minority of white people who might switch their vote if they are coddled enough. While there is even a single nonvoter who hasn’t been gotten to the polls, any unrepentant Trumper is unworthy of even a moment of consideration.

They will not change their votes. They are a cult. Any strategy that tries to do so is doomed to failure.

120

But where does that leave us in 2 years when we’ve done nothing to address the wrong-headed thinking that gave us Trump? We gave these folks a pass after 2000, thinking that Gore was just a poor candidate and “buyers remorse” would win us 2004. But instead Dubya did just well enough that all those folks mumbling about how voting for him in 2000 was a bad idea were “willing to give him another chance” because they feared what would happen if went with the “surrender party.” In 2 years, Trump may be doing well enough in the polls that these folks right now expressing regret might just shrug their shoulders and vote for him again.

True, but in 2004, the voting public (even if lukewarm on Dubya) had the (relatively) recent trauma of 9/11/01 and the illusory “victories” in Afghanistan and Iraq as a background theme, and an economy still in the “boom” phase (and an uninspiring, if qualified, Dem candidate).
And note that that “another chance” vote pretty much vanished by 2008. But do you really think Donald Trump, The Talking Yam is going to be able to “do well enough” - after two more years of scandals, turnovers, (probably) indictments/trials, counterproductive policies and general all-around incompetence to sway any but the hardcore “base” (all 27% of it) to support him for yet another craptastic term??

It takes a lot of chutzpah to believe HRC was blowing smoke but Trump and Sanders weren’t. There is unfortunately an intersection between Trumpism and Sandersim that many of Bernie’s admirers don’t see.

How about a big feature on people who vote for Hillary, and how they feel about their vote after a year + of Trump? I mean, there are more of us. About 3 Million more.

To put things in perspective. There are several states smaller than 3 million. I don’t care that she won the PV due to Cali and NY, it’s all the same country.

This is the flaw in the idea that the Democrats abandoned the WWC, and so enabled the rise of Trump. The only way we ‘abandoned’ the WWC was by supporting equality with white, straight, Christian males for everyone who ISN’T white, straight, Christian, or male. The only way to ‘win back’ the Trump supporters in the WWC is by being more racist than the GOP, which would mean abandoning everyone else in favor of white people.

There’s already a party for that. We don’t need two.

re: #121 Jay C

As I noted up above, if what’s driving this “buyers remorse” is public perception of Trump, then anything that might shift that into the positive territory for him could be the game-changer in 2020. As we’ve seen over the past year, he doesn’t need much for his poll numbers to edge upward, just a period of no negative news will do that. Or negative news for the DNC that takes the public’s attention away from him long enough for the public to forget why they don’t like him. Betting on people having a negative perception of him, of his own bad news killing his chances, is how we got a second Dubya term.

Normally I’d agree with you, but after reading the article about Richard Ojeda I linked to in my #116, I’m thinking there’s an opening after all, under some circumstances in some states. The Sanders-to-trump supporters who now regret that vote are indeed worth pursuing in the states where they’re the only ones who could make the difference between a win and a loss.

re: #130 Blind Frog Belly White

The only way to ‘win back’ the Trump supporters in the WWC is by being more racist than the GOP, which would mean abandoning everyone else in favor of white people.

Again, there are some circumstances where that might not be true. To put it in a simplistic yet still accurate manner, consider the following:

1) trump voters who were motivated 60% by racism/bigotry, 40% by “economic anxiety”
2) Sanders-to-trump voters motivated by the flip side, 60% economic anxiety, 40% racism (or indifference to racism)

The second group is indeed winnable with a populist message tailored to what they care about (e.g. the Pennsylvania trump voter who said she’s “going back to her Democrats” because she realizes the GOPers will cut social security to pay for the tax cut. That right there is a perfect campaign ad for the Dems to run in districts filled with similar likely voters). And again, you don’t have to have anything in the least bit racist or pandering to racism in that message.

Thing is, I get it, we hate thinking the worst of those people we know or otherwise have positive impressions of being a Trump voter. We wanna entertain the idea that these folks all had “good intentions,” that their circumstances or those of people they themselves know made them ripe for a pied-piper like Trump to come along. But if all you do is pat them on the head and tell them that it’s okay, we don’t hold it against them, just so long as they vote against Trump next time…what has really changed? They didn’t come around to our thinking, they didn’t acknowledge that their “good intentions” were wrong, they just got a pass and will happily follow along the next piper who shows up.

If all you do when your child makes a mistake is pat them on the head and tell them that they “meant well,” then they’re likely going to keep making that mistake. Eventually it won’t become a mistake…it’ll become a habit, and those are far harder to break.

Hell, in 2008, we had folks who swore up and down that Dubya was the worst president ever and they’d never make that mistake again…and then voted for Trump 8 years later. Why? Because Dubya’s sins were in the past and people had forgotten why his was such a train wreck of a presidency. Now we look back and actually marvel at how “good” he was compared to what we’re dealing with today. 8 years of Obama cleaning up his messes meant people couldn’t remember why they’d hated him so much. So when Trump comes along and promises he’ll “fix” all those things that Obama “broke” and return us to the “good ol’ days,” they have no reason not to fall in line behind him.

The highest point in Minnesota clocks in at a walloping 2,301 feet, so yeah. Not getting any altitude up here. It’s mostly about cold air and a decent (on average) snowpack.

Oof. Plenty to disagree with but hard hitting… Cell phone are driving up fatality rates despite more safety features than ever.
From a car blog, The Drive

Here an icepick of truth for you:
Since 1968, 1,530,000 Americans have been killed by guns.
Since 1968, 2,130,000 Americans have been killed by/in cars.
There is no Second Amendment protecting the right to drive a car. Driving is a privilege, not a right. There is nothing preventing us from personally acting on or regulating away the overwhelming majority of road fatalities away, today.
Where are the politicians and regulators fighting to improve road safety in a serious way? They don’t exist. What is the NRA’s position on improving road safety? Nonexistent. What about the gun control camp? Nada.
What a bunch of hypocrites. You need a poncho to hide from the Niagara Falls of blood, sweat and tears shed around the gun debate, but Skip Barber Racing School still had to file for bankruptcy.
Skip Barber’s one-day “Teen Safety And Survival” school costs $995.

The ski area I work at has a vertical drop of about 2,000 feet. So if you plopped the ski area down onto a sea level plane it would only be about 300 feet short of the highest point in Minnesota. The nearest town from the base of the ski area, 10 miles distant, is 2,100 feet lower.

And this despite the proliferation of “hands-free” laws in states across the country, which forbid even holding your phone in your hand while driving. Of course, those of you who know me know I am an avid fan of the Mythbusters, and they pretty clearly demonstrated that distracted driving is distracted driving, no matter whether the phone is in the hand or connected via Bluetooth.

I guess I was lucky. My dad sent me to a real driving school. Bob Bondurant I think. It was an advanced course, how to drive out of emergencies like debris on the freeway at speed. Or a skid, black ice etc. Maybe he slept better when I went out in the rain. Grandpa was a hunter, so before I got a .22 bolt action gun I had to pass an NRA hunter safety course. Parents had a small plane on a “lease back” deal with a school. So I took the FAA test and flew as a student when I could. All of these things are not for the irresponsible. The sum of all that was I learned that education and training made fun, dangerous if abused activity accessible. Safe enough.

But am I the only guy that hates back up cameras because they make you look the wrong way to back up?

I’ve been looking at RWNJ rants on my FB page. There is considerable wailing and gnashing of teeth over imminent gun seizure. Some make dark threats about the consequences, others call outright for insurrection. The more practical discuss ways to hide their guns, like sealing them in PVC pipe and sinking it in the local mudhole.
What’s interesting is that none of these clods seem to doubt that their man Trump could double-cross them and start grabbing guns instead of, well, you know. This shows pretty conclusively that they knew he was a rat and a snake when they voted for him, and they voted for him anyway.
