That reminds me of the Christmas pageants that Schuller’s Crystal Cathedral would have every year and of course there were the special guest stars like Jim Nabors, George Kennedy, Tony Orlando and The Osmonds who would add “star power” in those way over the top presentations. But then the Schuller Pulpit Pimping enterprise collapsed and they Crystal Cathedral was sold to the Catholic diocese.
As for Old Fart Schuller he just railed that he was cheated out of his pension and I remember all the elderly ladies that he bilked out of their Social Security checks. So nice to see that Pulpit Pimp get the Karmic revenge he so richly deserved!

Uh, how about “no, goddamnit”? The Supreme Court is clear in Edwards v. Aguillard (1987) that creationism isn’t science but religious dogma and cannot be taught int he public schools. And “intelligent design” was given the smackdown in the Dover case from 2005 (yeah, it was only a federal district court, but it’s the only case on point).
Seriously, if these people want to teach religious dogma, there’s the home school for you. This is proselytising in the public schools. I’m tired of this bullshit.

Parents and students seem to forget that a classroom is not a democracy, and the students do not have the ability to run the show. The kid can talk about religion all he likes at school, but if his commentary interferes with the teacher’s plans for the lesson or teaching unit, the teacher has the right to shut him down. This is called classroom discipline. If we now add separation of church and state, and science vs. creationism, to the mix, now the teacher has the additional judicial and legal backing to tell the kid to sit down and not interrupt class.
On the other hand, the teacher might, if the administration has his or her back, turn the student’s desires to proselytize and devote one class to a debate between scientific explanations vs religious explanations for creation or the origin or life or whatever. I would make it a requirement that the students supporting the religious explanations discuss at least one other creation myth besides Genesis. Otherwise, the teacher might be accused of favoring one religion over another. Specifically, if I were the teacher, I’d tell the student complainant in question that he has to discuss both Genesis and (for example) the Hindu story of Creation, or the Mayan story of Creation, and that he would be graded on his ability to explain both myths fairly and completely.
IOW, a teacher could turn the tables on this student yokel and make him have to work hard to gain his moment on the stage.
And now I must teach young minds about the intricacies of the English language.

Matt Furie, the creator of the Pepe the Frog cartoon character who is trying to shut down the Nazis using it, is suing InfoWars for copyright infringement for using his character.
The case will be heard in Federal court:
The lawsuit pinpoints one poster in particular as a source of copyright infringement. The poster features Pepe alongside InfoWars founder Alex Jones, President Donald Trump, Milo Yiannopoulos, Ann Coulter, Matt Drudge, Roger Stone and others with the text “MAGA,” short for Trump’s campaign slogan, “Make America Great Again.”
Furie, represented by attorney Rebecca Girolamo at Wilmer Cutler, says he didn’t authorize such use of Pepe. He alleges the poster is being sold by InfoWars in its online store.

Well, German law is a bit different than American law, but the principle remains: The copyright holder gets to determine how the work is used (satire and parody excepted).

The way Jones, Trump Jr., and others have used his character were not parody or satire, and the allegation is Jones is selling posters of his character without a license.

Confusion abounded late Wednesday in the West Wing over President Donald Trump’s impending trade announcement rolling out tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.
White House aides had been told to prepare for a signing ceremony Thursday at 3:30 p.m. ET in the Roosevelt Room, where steel and aluminum workers also are set to attend. But one White House aide said Wednesday night that the event had been canceled — because the policy was not yet finalized.
As of late Wednesday evening, the tariff announcement was not listed on the White House schedule.

A Federal court in Michigan has ruled that a funeral home may not fire a transgender staffer under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
They hired the man six years ago. When announcing he was going to transition to female, they fired their worker. The funeral home in the case cited the 1993 Religious Freedom Restoration Act, the Bible, and the Hobby Lobby Supreme Court decision in its defence.
If the Wingnut Welfare grifters get involved in this (like the Catholic Thomas More Law Center or Matt Staver’s Liberty Council), I suppose they could run this all the way up to the Supreme Court.

Often ‘outsiders’ can better summarize a culture than the members themselves. In the 1990’s a Romanian friend talked that way about her country’s music and how much of it came from Gypsy’s.
Now you have me thinking about the Scots-Irish songs about fishing. Perhaps the saddest, at least for me, is “Night Falls” By the Browne Sisters on their Castle Dangerous album. It is from the perspective of a woman whose husband goes off to see and never returns. Unfortunately I cannot find it online right now.
One of the more uplifting boat sinking songs is “The Mary Ellen Carter” by Stan Rogers. (The song is from the 1970’s, the prices are a bit out of date. :) )

These are new to me. I love the line “with every jar that hit the bar…” I’ll look into Browne Sisters. You hit the nail on the head about outsiders—most Koreans in Japan came voluntarily or by force during the colonial period and stayed. They were citizens during that period, but not after the war, so many have been in Japan for generations, don’t speak Korean, have never been to Korea, but have been denied protections and employment that come with citizenship (though laws have changed in recent years to address some of these issues). That exclusion meant that they’ve made lives in other ways such as entertainers, service entrepreneurs, pachinko parlor operators, etc.

It seems to me that a lot of countries define themselves as being born in a certain place, speaking a certain language and holding a certain set of beliefs. I do not think that this definition is holding up well in the current interconnectedness of the world. Certainly a lot of countries in Europe are currently dealing with this issue. What does it mean to be French? Or German? Or Hungarian? Or English?
I do not think that it is possible to roll the world back to 1800, despite the efforts of the current US administration and other reactionary groups across the world.

I agree. I think there are still many Japanese who are deeply suspicious of the Abe administration and worried about cynical ploys to deepen their version of patriotism. ASHLAND The mother of two young children involved in a Saturday shooting returned to work after coming home to check on injuries to her 4-year-old daughter, the prosecutor said during her bond-setting hearing.
Alyssa M. Edwards, 27, was charged on Monday with two counts of endangering children by the Ashland County Sheriff’s Office after the 8-year-old boy shot his 4-year-old sister four times with a rifle in their Hayesville home, said Chief Deputy Carl Richert.
Edwards appeared for a bond setting via Skype while in the Ashland County Jail on Monday afternoon.
Ashland County Prosecutor Christopher Tunnell said that Edwards’ husband believed she was taking the two children to a babysitter after she and her husband both left for work. Instead, Tunnell said, she left the two children home alone.
The .22-caliber rifle was kept in a gun locker with other firearms in the home, Tunnell said. It was unclear whether it was locked. Even if it were locked, he said, the 8-year-old knew how to unlock the gun locker and “was familiar with the firearm.”
“The ammunition was was stored separate from the gun, and it appears the 8-year-old was able to load the magazine and chamber the first round,” Tunnell said.
Tunnell indicated Edwards was informed of the shooting of the 4-year-old by the 8-year-old around 10 a.m. while working at a nearby horse farm.
“She came home, cleaned up a bed cover with blood on it, examined the 4-year-old and was aware the 4-year-old was injured at the time,” Tunnell said. “And despite that knowledge, clocked back in at work at 11 a.m., again leaving the 8-year-old and the 4-year-old home alone, yet again.”
It wasn’t until between noon and 2 p.m. that Edwards took both children to the hospital, after urine appeared to be leaking out of the girl’s wound, Tunnell said. The hospital then contacted police, and it wasn’t until then that the husband was told of the shooting, the prosecutor said.
Edwards does not have any prior criminal convictions, Tunnell said.

That includes South Korea and Turkey.
Two strategic partners in regional hotspots.
Trump is actively ignoring US strategic interests by refusing to address absence of people in these posts.
I was just looking at the list of ambassadors on wikipedia. They still have Bass (current ambassador to Afghanistan) listed as the ambassador to Turkey. On the bright side, it looks like most of Trump’s appointments have been career diplomats rather than political appointees. As it stands it looks like there’s about 35 vacancies, which probably isn’t a good thing.

I agree. I think there are still many Japanese who are deeply suspicious of the Abe administration and worried about cynical ploys to deepen their version of patriotism. But there as here, that minority committed to some mythical past that relies on identity definition in opposition to other nations/ethnicities are loud, better organized, and relatively wealthy.
I know too little about Japan. And, am not too sure about the ‘truthiness’ of what I think I know.
But Japan has a number of strategic decisions to make. I find that quite interesting. I think that they made the correct one in continuing to support the TPP. (For their self-interest as I understand it. Ignoring the US versus China benefits. Although, once the US has returned to sanity, I suspect that it will also benefit us.)

Mueller III finishes his report and his indictments, there will be ample grounds to conclude that the president abused his power and violated his oath.
the rest of her article is based on there not being a strong majority to impeach.

We think a majority of House members in good conscience (which would mean Republicans), when all the facts are in and his efforts to undermine the Russia investigation are laid out, could find that his conduct met the standard for impeachment (“high crimes and misdemeanors”).

I never saw what the American landscape looked like before Lady Bird Johnson came along, but my father did. When he was a kid in Texas, his parents would take him and his brothers for long drives in the country. Dad remembers his father’s approach to litter control. If anybody had a paper bag or a bottle cap or an apple core, he’d say, “Get that out of the car,” and one of the boys would roll down the window and toss it out. The inside of the car stayed clean, and nobody gave much thought to what the highway looked like as they blew past it. In a state as big as Texas, who would even notice one more little scrap of paper?
But that’s not the Texas I knew. In 1969, the year I was born, Lady Bird Johnson started handing out the Texas Highway Beautification Awards and writing personal checks to the winners. Unlike 2018, where the majority of Senate seats up for reelection are held by Democrats, the 2020 class is very Republican heavy.
Assuming there is a wave of Democratic victories this fall, and impeachment proceedings are carried out and voted upon, then any Republican Senator up for reelection in 2020 has to be very interested in preserving their own hide, not Trump’s.

Again, I see Cruz doing it out of some combination of spite, arrogance, and opportunity… spite for 2016, arrogance and opportunity based on 2020. I tend to agree with Andrew Sullivan that Graham is basically Butters from Southpark, and I could see him either going along with McCain or trying to stick to Cartman/Trump or just for once having a conscious. Sasse strikes me as one of those guys who believes conservativism deserves better than Trump and I could see him casting a conviction vote in order to somehow establish himself as a conscious of conservativism.

a) Religious impulses are not universal amongst humans. Aside from the native tribe in Brazil long studied that has no concept of things such as “spirituality” or “gods,” every single person who is religious learned it from someone else. It was inculcated, not a universal impulse.
“Give me a child until he is 7 and I will show you the man.” - Aristotle, with the ancient Greek version of “Propaganda’s a helluva drug.”
b) Regardless of whether Pence or anyone else wishes to practice a religion, the second it crosses the line into political policy it has no place in a secular state. John F. Kennedy spent a lot of time in his campaign convincing people he would not be subject to the Pope’s whims.

I look at the current Republican party as nothing more than a dam holding back what they probably do realize is a bad situation for their party in hopes they can get what they want.
There are cracks forming, the Koch brothers added to them yesterday. The current election results are another. Day after day bad news about Trump another.
All we need is one decent sized hole to occur and that damn is going to crumble and there will be Republicans spilling out and streaming away from Trump and Trumpers as fast as possible.
It will be a total mess as they will all start to point fingers at each other and trying to show who was more anti-Trump than the others.

Yeah, I like to drive the old state highways that were built by the CCC and WPA back in depression days. Yeah, I like to drive the old state highways that were built by the CCC and WPA back in depression days. Most of those road beds are still in great shape and even if the pavement is getting old it doesn’t form huge holes and have dips from bad grading and fast fills without allowing it all to settle.
It’s settled. Way settled. Some of it has shoulders, some doesn’t. I’m a ‘take the lane’ cyclist, so I don’t care much, but it’s nice to have when the trucks don’t move over. There was a highway in Kansas that had lots of speeding trucks, because it was too dangerous for the highway patrol to pull them over. What shoulder it had was muddy and steep. The shoulders would change at the county line. We stopped at a sheriff’s station to find out the condition (or existence) of the shoulder in the next county. The uniformed officer at the counter said, ‘I don’t know. I ain’t never been there.’

(On a side note, state highway number 92 is the longest continuously same-numbered state highway in the country: It starts just south of Chicago and ends in Torrington, Wyo. It passes around the side of my town. I have driven it from central Iowa to Torrington.)

Back in the days of our colonial founders, tar and feathering might have been the wisest course. Perhaps it still could be?
I just got done listening to Adam Schiff on Preet’s podcast. He too says Dems should back off impeachment talk, let Mueller’s thing play out, and even then be extremely careful of how and when they discuss impeachment. His argument is that Dems need to get out and make positive messages about healthcare, DACA, and other economic issues so that they can take back Congress in order to constrain Trump, who “we all know is not fit for his job.” He may be cagey there for political purposes, but it does make some sense.
Meanwhile, Mexico may end up building and paying for their own wall:

They’ve redone the website and it looks a lot more like a campaign website than I can ever remember seeing before. For example, there’s now an “issues” tab at the top of the page, and when you click on it, you get sent to a page that reads much more like a campaign than a government. Also, I can’t seem to find proposed regulations, executive orders, or bills that have been sent to the president. Something seems very not right about this.

As I said, I haven’t heard a lot of them and they may vary more than on that one CD (the eponymous “The High Kings”,) but as someone who danced to Mairi’s Wedding in my youth, I was really struck by their ballad-ization of it. You could never, ever dance to their version, despite the lyrics of “step we gaily, on we go…”
The harmonies are lovely, but I didn’t get much of a sense of energy.

I use the White House page primarily for flag proclamations when I’m wearing my flag committee chair hat here.
Right after Trump took office, the Webpage was redesigned and made very difficult to find proclamations amongst all the news releases, self-promotion, quasi-campaign statements, &c.
While there was news releases when Mr. Obama was President, they were placed under a separate tab. Proclamations were by themselves and easy to find.
Either they are intentionally making the Website hard to use, or they can’t even get a good IT person.

Going to be interesting to see how long before this ends up in the Courts. Lots of manufactures out there who will not like seeing their overhead take take a huge jump.

Well Ok then… There is so much crap in a continuum of swirl, I can’t make heads nor tails of a lot of it any more. Maybe that’s the point. I think a lot of the tit for tat is not necessarily a bad thing. Just going to sit back and burn a fatty and fondl……. Have me a bowl of nuts.
The greater point is that China still buys a lot more of our cars than we do of theirs at this point. We also don’t buy that much of their steel and aluminum compared to Canadian and Mexican imports. So these tariffs don’t hit China that hard but they will hit the EU and other allies, and they are being used as blackmail agains Canada and Mexico for NAFTA concessions, which won’t play well. Lastly those countries aren’t stupid, they can and will target their retaliatory actions against US exports from areas that Trump won while also pursuing punitive damages in the WTO.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the rest of the world makes future US admission into trade associations contingent on our abolishing the Electoral College. Our erstwhile democratic allies really have an incentive now to make a glaring example out of Trump and ensure that history remembers him as an illegitimate buffoon that isolated and weakened the US.

We have three. We even have a state highway (NE-92), also paved. (On a side note, state highway number 92 is the longest continuously same-numbered state highway in the country: It starts just south of Chicago and ends in Torrington, Wyo. It passes around the side of my town. I have driven it from central Iowa to Torrington.)
