So let me get this straight, Dana calls liberals enemies of this country and she’s whining that there’s pushback against her? What’s a matter Dana? I thought the NRA was freedom’s safe space. Maybe you shouldn’t be such a fucking hack and people wouldn’t call you out for being such a terrible person.

The NRA back then also promoted reasonable gun laws. The NRA had a perfect chance to show they weren’t racist assholes when Castile was murdered in cold blood but Dana being the witch she is blamed him for his own death. Not to mention the NRA loves to spread the scary minority crap to their members.

First Female Chief Justice in Philippines Faces Impeachment

[…]

Maria Lourdes Sereno, the first female chief justice in the Southeast Asian nation, has been an outspoken critic of Rodrigo Duterte’s administration. The justice committee of the House of Representatives, which is controlled by the president’s allies and initiates impeachment cases, is scheduled to decide Thursday whether to recommend the ouster of Sereno, an appointee of former leader Benigno Aquino.

Oh shit, he graduated from Second Baptist?!?

For those of you uninitiated in the Houston Mega church scene, Second Baptist is up there with Joel Osteen’s ilk. The Baptist here refer to their huge churches without the “Baptist,” so it’s First, Second, The Met, Sugar Creek, etc. Second is a huge monument to Southern Baptist right-wingery. No wonder Raphael turned out the way he did.

Trump official said scientists went ‘outside their wheelhouse’ by writing climate change ‘dramatically’ shrunk Montana glaciers

A U.S. Geological Survey study documenting how climate change has “dramatically reduced” glaciers in Montana came under fire from high-level Interior Department government officials in May, according to a batch of newly released records under the Freedom of Information Act, as they questioned federal scientists’ description of the decline.

But I have to wonder, on days like today, if she ever gets sick of it.

When someone tells you their church is Second you don’t have to ask them much else. It is always referred to as Second….in my part of Houston, which is fairly close to it, everyone knows what that means. For some reason it tends to attract Texas Aggies, both future and graduates, so you get that blend in as well.

My mother-in-law used to love their Christmas pageant every year. They have live camels, because of course they do. I went once, saw that huge church, and refused to go back. Pissed her off to no end but I did that a lot.

America, 2018:

Science-religion debate at Bret Harte High could go to court

[…]

In December, a 16-year-old sophomore at Bret Harte High School, Grayson Mobley, said he should have the right to discuss God and creationism in science class.

Backed by his parents and scores of supporters from local churches, Mobley asked the school board to change its policy that prohibits discussion of religion in science classes. His lawyer, Greg Glaser, said the family would sue if the board does not allow freedom of expression in class.

Uh, how about “no, goddamnit”? The Supreme Court is clear in Edwards v. Aguillard (1987) that creationism isn’t science but religious dogma and cannot be taught int he public schools. And “intelligent design” was given the smackdown in the Dover case from 2005 (yeah, it was only a federal district court, but it’s the only case on point).

Seriously, if these people want to teach religious dogma, there’s the home school for you. This is proselytising in the public schools. I’m tired of this bullshit.

wheat-dogg  Mar 7, 2018 • 10:02:36pm

re: #88 freetoken

Parents and students seem to forget that a classroom is not a democracy, and the students do not have the ability to run the show. The kid can talk about religion all he likes at school, but if his commentary interferes with the teacher’s plans for the lesson or teaching unit, the teacher has the right to shut him down. This is called classroom discipline. If we now add separation of church and state, and science vs. creationism, to the mix, now the teacher has the additional judicial and legal backing to tell the kid to sit down and not interrupt class.

On the other hand, the teacher might, if the administration has his or her back, turn the student’s desires to proselytize and devote one class to a debate between scientific explanations vs religious explanations for creation or the origin or life or whatever. I would make it a requirement that the students supporting the religious explanations discuss at least one other creation myth besides Genesis. Otherwise, the teacher might be accused of favoring one religion over another. Specifically, if I were the teacher, I’d tell the student complainant in question that he has to discuss both Genesis and (for example) the Hindu story of Creation, or the Mayan story of Creation, and that he would be graded on his ability to explain both myths fairly and completely.

IOW, a teacher could turn the tables on this student yokel and make him have to work hard to gain his moment on the stage.

America, 2018:

Science-religion debate at Bret Harte High could go to court

In December, a 16-year-old sophomore at Bret Harte High School, Grayson Mobley, said he should have the right to discuss God and creationism in science class.

What, you mean he doesn’t get to discuss his personal lord and savior in computer lab? Or alien rapists and murderers in Spanish class? Or, in algebra, how his and his little sister’s wee-wees look different? Or the End Times in American History? (OK, that last one might be a little more relevant than the others.)

Not in the old. Leviticus 11.4 and Deuteronomy 14.6 say that camels are traif. Cud chewers, but the hoofs are not split all the way down.

Oh, and bats are birds. Oh, and lobsters are right out. And cheeseburgers.

More trouble for Alex Jones … as in another lawsuit.

hollywoodreporter.com

Matt Furie, the creator of the Pepe the Frog cartoon character who is trying to shut down the Nazis using it, is suing InfoWars for copyright infringement for using his character.

The case will be heard in Federal court:

The lawsuit pinpoints one poster in particular as a source of copyright infringement. The poster features Pepe alongside InfoWars founder Alex Jones, President Donald Trump, Milo Yiannopoulos, Ann Coulter, Matt Drudge, Roger Stone and others with the text “MAGA,” short for Trump’s campaign slogan, “Make America Great Again.”

Furie, represented by attorney Rebecca Girolamo at Wilmer Cutler, says he didn’t authorize such use of Pepe. He alleges the poster is being sold by InfoWars in its online store.

Here’s the full complaint. (this is a link in the original article at Hollywood Reporter)

Should InfoWars attempt to argue fair use, the case could become provocative. Copyright law isn’t supposed to make value judgments. (See for example the time that Adolf Hitler’s “Mein Kampf” triggered a lawsuit.) But then again, the purpose and character of use as well as the effect of the use on the potential market are two of the four factors comprising a potential fair use.

In this case, Furie says he has licensed intellectual property rights for card games and stuffed dolls. Further exploration of the impact of political co-opting could be forthcoming. The lawsuit also notes that Donald Trump Jr. posted an image of Pepe in a modified version of a movie poster for the film “The Expendables” labeled “The Deplorables.”

Well, German law is a bit different than American law, but the principle remains: The copyright holder gets to determine how the work is used (satire and parody excepted).

In Mr. Furie’s case, he has only licensed his creation twice (for a game and for a plushie).

The way Jones, Trump Jr., and others have used his character were not parody or satire, and the allegation is Jones is selling posters of his character without a license.

Britain now says the Russian spy, his daughter, and the police officer who are in hospital were poisoned by a nerve agent. They are looking for the source of the nerve agent.

bbc.com

Counter-terrorism officers are working to uncover the origin of the nerve agent used in the attempted murder of ex-Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter, Yulia, in Salisbury.

The pair were found unconscious and are critically ill in hospital, along with a police officer who went to their aid.

A source told BBC News the chemical used on Sunday was likely to be rarer than Sarin or VX nerve agents.

THE bad guy from TLOTR.

I remember when we were flying in Germany, we were trained on a Sarin gas attack during an emergency launch against the godless commies. We had atropine pens, which would could keep us alive, but would pretty much incapacitate us, as it did nothing for the muscular rigor. So we would be immobilized as we watched our planes pound into the ground because no one was able to fly it.

Good times.

Greets and saluts from the Resistance in the NYC metro area. We’re digging out here in Northern NJ. We were lucky so far- no trees or branches down, but neighbors have branches and trees down.

With the thawing, I’m expecting more trees/branches to come down. We got about 9 inches total here, but it’s the wet concrete variety of snow. Just a few miles west, they got 18-24 inches.

It’s interesting listening to local officials around here demanding that the local utility company chiefs resign over the slow pace of power restoration from last week’s storm.

Puerto Rico is enduring the worst blackout in the nation’s history and it’s going on 6 months in some places. Know who should be resigning over that?

Donald J Trump.

His depraved indifference to the plight of millions of Americans in Puerto Rico shows he doesn’t give a crap about his oath or his obligation. He’s more concerned about making a buck off using the presidential seals on his golf resort logos and gift shop trinkets.

Congress wont lift a finger so long as the GOP remains entrenched there. Midterms are a few months away, but that’d be the first real opportunity to roll back Trump and the GOP - they’re indistinguishable at this point.

White House is in confusion over timing and details of tariffs rollout (goes to CNN)

Probably confused about David Koch telling the Republicans that is a really bad idea.

Confusion abounded late Wednesday in the West Wing over President Donald Trump’s impending trade announcement rolling out tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.

White House aides had been told to prepare for a signing ceremony Thursday at 3:30 p.m. ET in the Roosevelt Room, where steel and aluminum workers also are set to attend. But one White House aide said Wednesday night that the event had been canceled — because the policy was not yet finalized.

As of late Wednesday evening, the tariff announcement was not listed on the White House schedule.

Not good for the UK Labour Party:

telegraph.co.uk

Jeremy Corbyn was a member of a private Facebook group in which members published dozens of anti-Semitic messages and holocaust denial theories, it emerged yesterday.

Labour last night confirmed it was investigating up to half a dozen party members for their involvement in the group, with Corbyn allies Clive Lewis and Chris Williamson identified as members of the group.

Messages published on Palestine Live include conspiracy theories about the Rothschild family, supposed Israeli involvement in the 9/11 attacks and links to material produced by neo-Nazi groups.

Marx was right when he said that religion is the opiate of the masses.

The Marx quote is normally taken out of context. Marx actually stated it as a metaphor, not as the way cynical people exploit the masses.

“Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people”.

(translated from German)

The metaphor implies that religion is a response to exploitation, not a tool of exploitation.

Some context from the song comments:

“This song was sang by Japanese soldiers who were sent to RABAUL island in Papua New Guinea during the World War Ⅱ. Japanese army was defeated and withdrew from the island. This is farewell (SAYONARA=SARABA) song from the soldiers to the island and they say we will come back again. The fighting in the island was very sad but this song sang it rather cheerfully.”

One note from the Wiki article:

“As in most Pacific War campaigns, disease and starvation claimed more Japanese lives than enemy action. Most Japanese troops never even came into contact with Allied forces, and were instead simply cut off and subjected to an effective blockade by the US Navy. Garrisons were effectively besieged and denied shipments of food and medical supplies, and as a result, some claim that 97% of Japanese deaths in this campaign were from non-combat causes.”re: #107 freetoken

again, we have to distinguish between religion in the sense of spirituality and organized religion, especially in the form of an established Church.

Any institution can be used to exploit or oppress people. Churches can as well (and have in the past). That doesn’t mean the institution of a church is exploitative by nature.

Ideologies which do not account for human nature (there are greedy assholes) have a tendency to be exploited (churches, communists, libertarians, the ideology doesn’t really matter).

This song is pretty relevant nowadays, I’m hoping it makes it into the set.

American Gangster Time

What you got hidden up your sleeve?
The tracks of the train that were bidding you to leave
When they say that you should flatter to deceive
Don’t count on any reprieve

The hands of the helpless are raised
Your dead little secrets are praised
The people stand dumbstruck and dazed
By the inches that you have erased

It’s a drag
Saluting that starry rag
I’d rather go blind
For speaking my mind
Or use it just like a gag
So raise it in anger
Just let it hang
American Gangster Time

Committing the perfect crime
In American Gangster Time

It was developed for all cuts but the better ones tended to be consumed fresh, leaving the lesser cuts for the salting process. Telling quote from the article:

Much of the undesirable portions and lower grades were traded to the French, while better parts were saved for British consumption or shipped to British colonies.

Not sure what the Mrs. is craving. We’ve got a bunch of really good restaurants we’d want to check out (plus a few old favorites). There’s a really good french restaurant in Ridgewood NJ. Or we could drive out to Denville NJ to what’s considered the best Chinese restaurant in NJ.

Oh, and there are good Spanish/tapas places we might think of in Ironbound section of Newark.

Gotta be that quarter Irish guy :). I’m sure you’ll find a great place. French sounds good. I really haven’t experienced French food that often.

They show these old Soviet-era versions of Winnie the Pooh on Czech television from time to time, dubbed into Czech of course - it’s on a program called Večerníček (Bedtime Stories). The Czech voice cast sounds pretty much identical to the original Russia voice actors…..a remarkable dubbing job.

Federal Court: Funeral Home Has to Bury Transgender Discrimination Six Feet Under (Wonkette)

A Federal court in Michigan has ruled that a funeral home may not fire a transgender staffer under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

They hired the man six years ago. When announcing he was going to transition to female, they fired their worker. The funeral home in the case cited the 1993 Religious Freedom Restoration Act, the Bible, and the Hobby Lobby Supreme Court decision in its defence.

If the Wingnut Welfare grifters get involved in this (like the Catholic Thomas More Law Center or Matt Staver’s Liberty Council), I suppose they could run this all the way up to the Supreme Court.

Cool. Did not know any of this. Thank you! And yes, I think there has been nostalgia for the fallen soldier carried over into Japanese song.

Don’t know about Tanimura, but a significant number of “traditional ballad” (once) performers are actually of Korean descent. Lots of songs about waiting in the port for long-gone fisherman husband/lover, etc.

funeral homes have a bigger range of arguments at their disposal to present themselves as participating in a religious rite, certainly more than a cake baker does with a wedding cake.

but if that be the case, then they are then presenting themselves as quasi-religious organizations and opening up a big can of worms, so to speak…

Wonkette with the hot-take headline of the day:

Rick Perry Is Stupid

At an international energy industry conference in Houston Wednesday, Rick Perry made a moral case for continuing to burn fossil fuels as much as possible, because it would be terribly selfish of the developed world to deny developing nations the opportunity to play their part in making the planet unlivable for large mammals like Donald Trump. He argued that curbing greenhouse gas emissions is “immoral,” because only the energy sources that made him governor of Texas and a national political figure can possibly lift the world out of poverty. He then spent 10 minutes pushing energetically on a door clearly labeled “Pull.”

“Look those people in the eyes that are starving and tell them, ‘You can’t have electricity,’” he said. “Because as a society we decided fossil fuels were bad. I think that is immoral.”

Don’t know about Tanimura, but a significant number of “traditional ballad” (once) performers are actually of Korean descent. Lots of songs about waiting in the port for long-gone fisherman husband/lover, etc.

Interesting! Another thread to check out.

Often ‘outsiders’ can better summarize a culture than the members themselves. In the 1990’s a Romanian friend talked that way about her country’s music and how much of it came from Gypsy’s.

Now you have me thinking about the Scots-Irish songs about fishing. Perhaps the saddest, at least for me, is “Night Falls” by the Browne Sisters on their Castle Dangerous album. It is from the perspective of a woman whose husband goes off to sea and never returns. Unfortunately I cannot find it online right now.

One of the more uplifting boat sinking songs is “The Mary Ellen Carter” by Stan Rogers. (The song is from the 1970’s, the prices are a bit out of date. :) )

Oh boy. The EU threw down the gauntlet regarding Ireland.

The EU has thrown down an ultimatum to Theresa May in Brexit talks, warning that it will not open discussions about trade or other issues until the Irish border question is solved.

Speaking in Dublin alongside the Irish prime minister Leo Varadkar, European Council president Donald Tusk said talks would be a case of “Ireland first” and that “the risk of destabilising the fragile peace process must be avoided at all costs”.

“We know today that the UK government rejects a customs and regulatory border down the Irish Sea, the EU single market, and the customs union,” the Council president said.

“While we must respect this position, we also expect the UK to propose a specific and realistic solution to avoid a hard border.

“As long as the UK doesn’t present such a solution, it is very difficult to imagine substantive progress in Brexit negotiations.

“If in London someone assume that the negotiations will deal with other issues first before than the Irish issue, my response would be: Ireland first.”

Honestly, the whole mess seems a great deal like the “Repeal and Replace” business has been here in the US: The GOP don’t want to admit that it’s never going to happen, because doing so will send the base into a froth that will see a great many of them voted out of office. But any realistic move to fulfill the promise will doom them electorally as well. So they instead just keep making lipservice to the whole matter while nothing substantive happens, ensuring they can keep running on “making it happen.”

These are new to me. I love the line “with every jar that hit the bar…” I’ll look into Browne Sisters. You hit the nail on the head about outsiders—most Koreans in Japan came voluntarily or by force during the colonial period and stayed. They were citizens during that period, but not after the war, so many have been in Japan for generations, don’t speak Korean, have never been to Korea, but have been denied protections and employment that come with citizenship (though laws have changed in recent years to address some of these issues). That exclusion meant that they’ve made lives in other ways such as entertainers, service entrepreneurs, pachinko parlor operators, etc.

You bring up an interesting point on the Koreans. Truth be told, I wonder if this is a major weakness on the part of Japan. Even if part of it is due to living in the shadow of the huge Han civilization.

It seems to me that a lot of countries define themselves as being born in a certain place, speaking a certain language and holding a certain set of beliefs. I do not think that this definition is holding up well in the current interconnectedness of the world. Certainly a lot of countries in Europe are currently dealing with this issue. What does it mean to be French? Or German? Or Hungarian? Or English?

I do not think that it is possible to roll the world back to 1800, despite the efforts of the current US administration and other reactionary groups across the world.

ABC’s Joy Behar has reportedly apologized for remarks made on “The View” in which she said that if Jesus is talking to you, it’s a sign of mental illness.

The comments had been directed at Vice President Mike Pence.

Disney CEO Bob Iger, in an address to a shareholder meeting in Houston, said that Behar had apologized “for things she has said about Christians and the Trump administration,” according to multiple media reports.

The High Kings are a very successful attempt to re-create the boys. There’s a video in which they don the original knit jumpers, provided by the Clancy grandmother.

I will have to check out the High Kings. And I appreciate the context that you added about them.

Last month there was a discussion on “The Parting Glass” sparked by by the passing of AnyMouse’s Sister-in-Law.

(My condolences, AnyMouse. She sounds like she was a true character. And fit right in with your family.)

Anyway, I did a YouTube search and listened to their version. (I particularly like Peter Hollins version at the moment.)

And here we have the money shot in encroaching fascism:

“To have ABC maintain a broadcast forum that compared Christianity to mental illness is just wrong,” Pence told C-SPAN. “It is simply wrong for ABC to have a television program that expresses that kind of religious intolerance.”

First off, Pence claims that “Christianity” is those about which Behar spoke, namely, who claim to hear Je$u$ speaking to them.

Secondly, the whole point of opinion programs is to have people who have opinions. ABC doesn’t say that Behar’s views are their own.

Glad you liked it! Stan Rogers did a bunch of really great songs. I always liked “Witch of Westmoreland” and “White Collar Holler”. Another of the very sad boat wreck songs is Roger’s Jeannie C. I always viewed it as about a man losing his core identity.

There are some Browne Sisters (with George Cavanaugh) songs on youtube, but the sound is pretty bad. They are a Scots music group out of California and mostly perform at various Scottish Games across the US.)

I agree. I think there are still many Japanese who are deeply suspicious of the Abe administration and worried about cynical ploys to deepen their version of patriotism. But there as here, that minority committed to some mythical past that relies on identity definition in opposition to other nations/ethnicities are loud, better organized, and relatively wealthy.

Long ago, on this very board, I used to make the statement that creationists are mentally ill.

Used to get downdinged for that.

At some point, I assert, we need to call out fantasies for what they are.

The likes of Pence participate in a group delusion (note - all religions are human creations and like everything we invent, we create them to fill some need.)

It’s part of being human - creating things.

Yet when we think our inventions, save for some sort of AI (yet to be achieved and no, Alexa doesn’t count), are talking back to us, then we’re clearly deluding ourselves.

I know that religious impulses are universal among humans.

To misconstrue these feelings as someone speaking to you is the essence of many religious teachings.

And they are all delusions.

It was posted here last weekend about the Ohio mother whose 8 year old son shot her 4 year old daughter.

That was bad enough. Read this article from The Canton (OH) Repository. It was actually worse. The link takes you to a survey question before opening the article

Mom goes back to work after son, 8, shoots his sister

ASHLAND The mother of two young children involved in a Saturday shooting returned to work after coming home to check on injuries to her 4-year-old daughter, the prosecutor said during her bond-setting hearing.

Alyssa M. Edwards, 27, was charged on Monday with two counts of endangering children by the Ashland County Sheriff’s Office after the 8-year-old boy shot his 4-year-old sister four times with a rifle in their Hayesville home, said Chief Deputy Carl Richert.

Edwards appeared for a bond setting via Skype while in the Ashland County Jail on Monday afternoon.

Ashland County Prosecutor Christopher Tunnell said that Edwards’ husband believed she was taking the two children to a babysitter after she and her husband both left for work. Instead, Tunnell said, she left the two children home alone.

The .22-caliber rifle was kept in a gun locker with other firearms in the home, Tunnell said. It was unclear whether it was locked. Even if it were locked, he said, the 8-year-old knew how to unlock the gun locker and “was familiar with the firearm.”

“The ammunition was was stored separate from the gun, and it appears the 8-year-old was able to load the magazine and chamber the first round,” Tunnell said.

Tunnell indicated Edwards was informed of the shooting of the 4-year-old by the 8-year-old around 10 a.m. while working at a nearby horse farm.

“She came home, cleaned up a bed cover with blood on it, examined the 4-year-old and was aware the 4-year-old was injured at the time,” Tunnell said. “And despite that knowledge, clocked back in at work at 11 a.m., again leaving the 8-year-old and the 4-year-old home alone, yet again.”

It wasn’t until between noon and 2 p.m. that Edwards took both children to the hospital, after urine appeared to be leaking out of the girl’s wound, Tunnell said. The hospital then contacted police, and it wasn’t until then that the husband was told of the shooting, the prosecutor said.

Edwards does not have any prior criminal convictions, Tunnell said.

this is true:

The magnitude and variety of President Trump’s sins of commission (e.g. repeated attempts to derail the Russia investigation) and omission (e.g. failing to protect our country from meddling) suggest that once Robert S. Mueller III finishes his report and his indictments, there will be ample grounds to conclude that the president abused his power and violated his oath.

the rest of her article is based on there not being a strong majority to impeach.
well, i don’t think “we” think this yet.

We think a majority of House members in good conscience (which would mean Republicans), when all the facts are in and his efforts to undermine the Russia investigation are laid out, could find that his conduct met the standard for impeachment (“high crimes and misdemeanors”).

Rep. Roger Williams

@RepRWilliams
#OTD 117 years ago, the Bluebonnet was named the official Texas state flower.

Do you have memories of your family pulling over to the side of an interstate and taking some photos in bluebonnet fields as a kid? Tweet me your photos!

Does Rep Williams know that the reason that there are bluebonnets instead of litter all over Texas is Ladybird Johnson?

I never saw what the American landscape looked like before Lady Bird Johnson came along, but my father did. When he was a kid in Texas, his parents would take him and his brothers for long drives in the country. Dad remembers his father’s approach to litter control. If anybody had a paper bag or a bottle cap or an apple core, he’d say, “Get that out of the car,” and one of the boys would roll down the window and toss it out. The inside of the car stayed clean, and nobody gave much thought to what the highway looked like as they blew past it. In a state as big as Texas, who would even notice one more little scrap of paper?

But that’s not the Texas I knew. In 1969, the year I was born, Lady Bird Johnson started handing out the Texas Highway Beautification Awards and writing personal checks to the winners. Soon everybody was planting bluebonnets, Indian paintbrushes, and black-eyed Susans in the hopes of winning her approval. Driving out to see the wildflowers bloom was something everybody did in the spring. As for the trash? Lady Bird thought that people just wouldn’t have the nerve to throw garbage on a field of bluebonnets, our state flower. She was right.

Disney has often tried to court the more religious part of our society, more so than many other Hollywood-originating entertainment enterprises.

The ironic thing is that many Christian fundamentalists used to rail against Disney for the latter’s alleged satanism and immorality.

Let’s assume Democrats hold all their seats and pick up Nevada and Arizona, giving them 51 votes. How many remaining Republicans would vote for removal? Let’s play the game:

1. Ted Cruz (assuming he holds off O’Rourke and is chastised a bit by a close race, or more realistically he sees it as a means of being able to run in 2020)
2. Lisa Murkowsi
3. John McCain (health allowing, and because he’s a crotchty old man who doesn’t like Trump)
4. Marco Rubio (again, it means a chance to run in 2020; problem is it would require courage)
5. Susan Collins

8. Lindsay Graham (because McCain told him to)
9. Mitt Romney (because it’s the closest he’ll ever get to flipping off both Trump and Putin)

I’m not sure who else would be persuadable. Mostly because I don’t know enough about them or the dynamics of their home states. Then again, depending on the nature of the evidence against Trump (and his approval rating continuing to drop), a whole host of Republicans could see it being in their best interest.

Ben Sasse? Lindsey Graham? Ted Cruz? I don’t think so.

Unlike 2018, where the majority of Senate seats up for reelection are held by Democrats, the 2020 class is very Republican heavy.

Assuming there is a wave of Democratic victories this fall, and impeachment proceedings are carried out and voted upon, then any Republican Senator up for reelection in 2020 has to be very interested in preserving their own hide, not Trump’s.

Why not start with the House? How many Republicans there would vote for Articles of Impeachment?

My guess is zero.

I’m assuming Democrats gain control of the House, and Articles of Impeachment require a simple majority. Clinton’s impeachment carried with 228 votes and 221 votes.

Ben Sasse? Lindsey Graham? Ted Cruz? I don’t think so.

Again, I see Cruz doing it out of some combination of spite, arrogance, and opportunity… spite for 2016, arrogance and opportunity based on 2020. I tend to agree with Andrew Sullivan that Graham is basically Butters from Southpark, and I could see him either going along with McCain or trying to stick to Cartman/Trump or just for once having a conscious. Sasse strikes me as one of those guys who believes conservativism deserves better than Trump and I could see him casting a conviction vote in order to somehow establish himself as a conscious of conservativism.

The Senate map doesn’t favor the Democrats given that this class has more Democrats up for reelection/election than GOPers. But getting to 51 is possible.

As you correctly note, it takes more than 51 to get impeachment.

And this GOP is that craven that they’ll block removal on purely partisan lines even if the facts and evidence supports removal and prosecution for multiple felonies.

Not that many actually.

There are quite a few GOP seats in just NY, CA, and NJ that could swing the House to Democratic control.

Current GOP/Dem split is 241/194.

Democrats need to get to 218. That’s just 24 seats.

I don’t expect impeachment to happen. Instead, I expect Trump to either quit or drop out of the 2020 race. He’ll make a lot of noise about how he’s leaving with “dignity,” but the reality will be that he’s virtually guaranteed to lose bigly at the polls and would rather go out a “winner.”

Personally, assuming the Democrats end up with 51 Senators next year, I think it won’t be that hard to find 15 Republican Senators who would like to see Trump gone, or have enough internal morals left to remove a President due to crimes regardless of party pressure.

I think it would, unless there is overwhelming evidence of serious crimes committed by Trump personally. The GOP would rip in two, and any chance they had of winning the 2020 presidential election would evaporate. The best hope for them is that if the economy stays good that Trump decides he has already achieved MAGA and anoints Mike Pence as his successor so the party stays united.

I’m back. Had to deal with an emergency in my bathroom (toilet flooded over, yay, fortunately I have a carpet cleaner).

I would disagree on a couple points:

a) Religious impulses are not universal amongst humans. Aside from the native tribe in Brazil long studied that has no concept of things such as “spirituality” or “gods,” every single person who is religious learned it from someone else. It was inculcated, not a universal impulse.

“Give me a child until he is 7 and I will show you the man.” - Aristotle, with the ancient Greek version of “Propaganda’s a helluva drug.”

b) Regardless of whether Pence or anyone else wishes to practice a religion, the second it crosses the line into political policy it has no place in a secular state. John F. Kennedy spent a lot of time in his campaign convincing people he would not be subject to the Pope’s whims.

I look at the current Republican party as nothing more than a dam holding back what they probably do realize is a bad situation for their party in hopes they can get what they want.

There are cracks forming, the Koch brothers added to them yesterday. The current election results are another. Day after day bad news about Trump another.

All we need is one decent sized hole to occur and that damn is going to crumble and there will be Republicans spilling out and streaming away from Trump and Trumpers as fast as possible.

It will be a total mess as they will all start to point fingers at each other and trying to show who was more anti-Trump than the others.

Hopefully it will be damaging enough they will have trouble rebuilding their damn party!

I suppose one of the central questions is how will the Republicans respond to being in the minority in one or both Houses? It also depends on how much further Trump spirals between now and then and how the big GOP donors react - for example, I’m guessing the Koch brothers probably aren’t on board with tariffs and a trade war. And as someone mentioned above, the 2020 map has lots of Republicans up in the Senate (though in mostly favorable races), so a combination of erratic behavior, trade wars, and a deeply unpopular president could lead some of them to save themselves over an interloper who has no real loyalty to the party.

There’s a lot of moving parts here, and it’s hard to game it out without controlling for some issues or otherwise making assumptions.

I’d agree, if Trump would be calm and serious during the impeachment process and handle himself with dignity. Since, in the real world, this has utterly zero chance of happening, he will get more and more unhinged by the day. The gooper senators will be forced to either vote for his removal or publicly support an increasingly crazy gibbering lunatic in the White House contradicting himself and threatening lawmakers on an hourly basis.

The main difference is that the UK is up against a very real deadline; March 2019. They’ll crash out of the EU at that point with no deal, which could arguably be quite disastrous for their economy.

They have one year - one year - to come up with something substantial and not just hollow phrases and meaningless platitudes.

Conservatism is about gaining and maintaining power in every country throughout history.

The Conservatives in the UK could end this charade tomorrow by saying “You know what Brussels? This whole Brexit thing is a bad idea for us. We wish to withdraw our Article 50 request.”

They won’t do it. Because they are afraid of their bigot voters, they will see the breakup of the United Kingdom before they give an inch of power away.

It’s settled. Way settled. Some of it has shoulders, some doesn’t. I’m a ‘take the lane’ cyclist, so I don’t care much, but it’s nice to have when the trucks don’t move over. There was a highway in Kansas that had lots of speeding trucks, because it was too dangerous for the highway patrol to pull them over. What shoulder it had was muddy and steep. The shoulders would change at the county line. We stopped at a sheriff’s station to find out the condition (or existence) of the shoulder in the next county. The uniformed officer at the counter said, ‘I don’t know. I ain’t never been there.’

Back in the days of our colonial founders, tar and feathering might have been the wisest course. Perhaps it still could be?

I just got done listening to Adam Schiff on Preet’s podcast. He too says Dems should back off impeachment talk, let Mueller’s thing play out, and even then be extremely careful of how and when they discuss impeachment. His argument is that Dems need to get out and make positive messages about healthcare, DACA, and other economic issues so that they can take back Congress in order to constrain Trump, who “we all know is not fit for his job.” He may be cagey there for political purposes, but it does make some sense.

Trump sent Kushner to Mexico to talk with Pena Nieto. Even though Kushner doesn’t have security clearance and doesn’t, apparently, see the need to include people like the ambassador to Mexico.

They’ve redone the website and it looks a lot more like a campaign website than I can ever remember seeing before. For example, there’s now an “issues” tab at the top of the page, and when you click on it, you get sent to a page that reads much more like a campaign than a government. So just went to the White House website to see if there was a copy of the proposed tariff orders up yet to read. They’ve redone the website and it looks a lot more like a campaign website than I can ever remember seeing before. For example, there’s now an “issues” tab at the top of the page, and when you click on it, you get sent to a page that reads much more like a campaign than a government. Also, I can’t seem to find proposed regulations, executive orders, or bills that have been sent to the president. Something seems very not right about this.

I’m pretty sure that using government resources (i.e. the White House website) to support a political campaign is highly unethical, if not outright illegal.

I’m sure that Mexican officials gave that meeting all of the gravitas to which it was entitled. I bet people showed up for that meeting just to see how stupid it would be.

Some New Mexicans are so mixed up, they’re putting a fence around the wall. And it’s a Libertarian at that!

[…]

Land Commissioner Aubrey Dunn told The Associated Press that if his office can’t reach an agreement over an easement with the federal government, he will install a fence to block access to the property.

[…]

Dunn’s staff determined that one parcel between the Santa Teresa port of entry and El Paso, Texas, had been initially conveyed to what was then the territory of New Mexico under the 1898 Ferguson Act. New Mexico officials contend the parcel was never part of the buffer zone that was established by a 1907 presidential proclamation to ensure federal authorities could patrol along the southern border.

Dunn said a survey by the Bureau of Land Management and other records show the state owns the entire parcel and that the federal government never received permission from the state to build the border barrier that has existed there for years, or to use the roads in the area.

There also are questions about whether a right of way is needed for another area where the federal government has installed lights and is maintaining a road along the border.

Easement and rights of way fees would cost roughly $30,000 for the parcels in question, according to preliminary estimates by the State Land Office.

“This trespass issue is not a new issue,” Dunn said. “There’s been quite a bit of federal encroachment.”

The Monmouth University poll found that 50 percent of NRA members disapprove of how the grieving students have handled themselves in the media. Sixty-five percent say the students from Parkland, Fla., are not effective advocates, and 61 percent believe they are being manipulated by outside groups rather than expressing their own beliefs.

The views of the NRA members are tougher on the students than those of self-identified gun owners. Forty-eight percent of gun owners say the students are effective advocates, and 53 percent approve of how they are handling themselves in the media.

The students are seen favorably when the survey includes both gun owners and people who do not own guns.

Sixty-two percent over all say the students are effective advocates for gun control, with just 28 percent saying they are not effective. Fifty-seven percent say the students are having more impact than past victims of mass shootings.

Translation: NRA members think victims are the ones being manipulated, when a poll of non-NRA members show the exact opposite is true.

Federal Judge Thinks Kris Kobach Is An Asshole Too (Wonkette)

They go through the trial and the incredible incompetence of Kobach’s team trying to defend one of the strictest voting registration laws in the nation. They backed down after the Pentagon threatened to sue.)

Interesting point. Something that I will need to listen for, to see how they vary their musical approach for different songs.

As I said, I haven’t heard a lot of them and they may vary more than on that one CD (the eponymous “The High Kings”,) but as someone who danced to Mairi’s Wedding in my youth, I was really struck by their ballad-ization of it. You could never, ever dance to their version, despite the lyrics of “step we gaily, on we go…”
The harmonies are lovely, but I didn’t get much of a sense of energy.

Yeah, I like to drive the old state highways that were built by the CCC and WPA back in depression days. Most of those road beds are still in great shape and even if the pavement is getting old it doesn’t form huge holes and have dips from bad grading and fast fills without allowing it all to settle.

unless i need to “get somewhere”, i stay off the interstates and take roads less traveled

for me the whole point of motorcycle touring is to be exactly there, then.
slower, smaller, sometimes twistier roads encourage that.

i have never ridden so i could later on say “i rode past there”

though i probably have rode past there

thehill.com

And why, you may ask?

Well, in a nutshell, the TN GOP’s argument can be summarized thusly;

[Former state Senator David] Fowler is arguing that the Supreme Court’s ruling essentially nullified all Tennessee marriage licenses when it opened the spectrum of legal marriage beyond just between a man and a woman, The Tennessean reported.

If Tennessee were to ban child marriages by modifying state marriage law, lawmakers would be acknowledging the existence of same-sex marriage, according to Fowler’s legal theory.

I use the White House page primarily for flag proclamations when I’m wearing my flag committee chair hat here.

Right after Trump took office, the Webpage was redesigned and made very difficult to find proclamations amongst all the news releases, self-promotion, quasi-campaign statements, &c.

While there was news releases when Mr. Obama was President, they were placed under a separate tab. Proclamations were by themselves and easy to find.

Either they are intentionally making the Website hard to use, or they can’t even get a good IT person.

The greater point is that China still buys a lot more of our cars than we do of theirs at this point. We also don’t buy that much of their steel and aluminum compared to Canadian and Mexican imports. So these tariffs don’t hit China that hard but they will hit the EU and other allies, and they are being used as blackmail agains Canada and Mexico for NAFTA concessions, which won’t play well. Lastly those countries aren’t stupid, they can and will target their retaliatory actions against US exports from areas that Trump won while also pursuing punitive damages in the WTO.

re: #593 goddamnedfrank

The greater point is that China still buys a lot more of our cars than we do of theirs at this point. We also don’t buy that much of their steel and aluminum compared to Canadian and Mexican imports. So these tariffs don’t hit China that hard but they will hit the EU and other allies, and they are being used as blackmail agains Canada and Mexico for NAFTA concessions, which won’t play well. Lastly those countries aren’t stupid, they can and will target their retaliatory actions against US exports from areas that Trump won while also pursuing punitive damages in the WTO.

has this kind of precision, politically based, targeting been done to the usa before?

Either they are intentionally making the Website hard to use, or they can’t even get a good IT person.

I guess it’s too small potatoes for Internet Genius Brad Parscale.

Kentucky killed a child marriage bill last week, because churches protested in the state legislature.

Alabama is awaiting an opinion by Judge Roy Moore.

OTOH, it tends to result in a quiet environment.

re: #535 Targetpractice

I’m pretty sure that using government resources (i.e. the White House website) to support a political campaign is highly unethical, if not outright illegal.

As Kellyanne Conway recently discovered.
