As I suspected, Trump announced a trade war and then is hoping no one notices when he ultimately doesn’t name any actual countries he’s targeting with those tariffs.
Or, alternatively, he names them and it turns out to be counterproductive because those countries already have signaled that they’ll be targeting specific goods - like Harleys, bourbons/whiskeys, and other domestic products that are produced in red state areas.

Trump thinks that these tariffs are gonna force steel exporting countries to negotiate “fair” deals with us in order to get out from under the tariffs.
The reality is those countries will flip him off while raising the cost of their products, and the companies that rely upon those imports will simply pass the cost onto their customers because the cost of sourcing out the amount/quality of steel they need from US sources would be higher.
The guy from USW did say they will not turn this into an election issue as they are a union and care about many issues, like healthcare, global warming, etc. So he hopes it isn’t a one issue voter thing.
But still Ugh.

Demand is outpacing supply. So obviously the best way to deal with this is to make the supply even more costly.

Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts has ordered the flag to half staff until March 13 as a mark of respect for former Governor Charles Thone (R). Governor Thone passed away this morning at the age of ninety-four.
He was a WW2 combat officer, and served in a variety of capacities in state and Federal government, as well as veterans organisations, civic organisations, and law firms. He was also the first state governor to support Ronald Reagan’s bid to become President.

Nearly 400 more Cabela’s workers also “volunteered to exit,” Bass Pro said Thursday, but the company is postponing any action on those people until it determines its needs and what opportunities could be available in Sidney or elsewhere.

If you’re interested, Bass Pro Shops took out an advert in today’s Wall Street Journal offering the giant Cabela’s campus in Sidney for rent to a business for $1 a year. The property is worth tens of millions of dollars.
Bass Pro Shops says that they are concerned that the City of Sidney (population 6,000) will be adversely affected by the massive job cuts as they move the corporate headquarters to Springfield, Missouri. They say they are contacting their vendors about locating business in Sidney to help assuage the massive job losses.
Sidney is sixty miles south of my home. A lot of people around here are employed by Cabela’s in Sidney or their satellite storage facility in Oshkosh (population 800).

Well, to be fair to both Cabela’s and Bass Pro Shops, this deal has been in the works for a long time. It was finalised before Trump took office. The buyout plans and move have also been planned for a long time.
This is more of the usual corporate consolidation stuff that’s been going on for decades. Cabela’s was a privately-owned business, and the family wanted to get out of the business. They put their business up for sale, and Bass Pro Shops gave them the best deal.

He took a closer look at data gathered in 1940 from skeletal remains recovered by a British expedition to Nikumaroro. The British found a human skull, humeri and radii (both arm bones), a tibia and fibula from the lower leg and two femurs (thigh bones). The bones were sent to Fiji, where they were examined and measured by physician D.W. Hoodless.
But the bones themselves are long gone. After Hoodless examined them, and determining them to be from a stocky European male, they disappeared. The assumption is that either he or someone else in Fiji discarded them.
They reached this new conclusion by re-examining the measurements on record.
So Kim Jong-un wants to meet with Trump.

The prevailing theory at the time was that they had crashed in the open ocean. There had also apparently been a shipwreck near the island with 35 lost. There’s actually a lot of interesting bits in that story - apparently there was a belief that Earhart was a couple inches taller than she actually was, which would have led the examiner to determine that the bones weren’t hers because it would have thrown off the measured ratios.

That’s crazy. And man Earhart was amazing. I’d be petrified to fly a plane period let alone what she did.
I think I have mentioned this in the past around here, but the first woman to actually complete the around-the-world flight was from Columbus. I worked for her husband in a tech ad agency he owned. I got all the details many times when Russ and I would go to lunch together.
Even though this was many years after Earhart, it was still a very daunting task. They removed the rear seat and put in place a huge extra fuel tank. The damn plane was a bomb. You can see the tank in the image of her plane hanging in the Smithsonian Museum at the wiki page linked below.
She was a very small woman and very quiet. If you saw her and spoke with her you would never think she was the first woman to fly around the world.

Jong Un knows crazy better than Trump. Jong Un and the North Koreans have been doing the rogue nation thing for a long time and know how to manipulate someone like Trump.
At the same time, Trump is too proud to even consider not doing this meeting. There’s a reason we’ve been doing Six Party Talks with North Korea for years and it raises Jong Un’s stature to an equal with that of Trump. Why would Trump do that?

White supremacists and Japan: A love story

The Washington Post reported something interesting on Feb. 14: A farm in Virginia put up a sign saying “Resist white supremacy.” And it incurred a surprising amount of online backlash.
Calls for boycotts. Accusations and recriminations. One-star Facebook reviews that had nothing to do with their products.
The article pondered: Who, other than a white supremacist, would object to a message rejecting white supremacy?
But if you’ve ever protested racism in Japan, or read comments sections in Japanese media, you’ll know these reactions have been old hat for nearly two decades.
In fact, this column will argue that online intolerance and attack have been Japan exports.
First, let’s talk about the old hat. It’s been well established in both articles and lawsuits that Japan’s online bullying is rife (see “2channel, the bullies’ forum,” JBC, Feb. 3, 2009), with people libeled and doxxed, and many a personal and professional life destroyed.
But it’s not limited to Japanese-language forums. Anyone critical of Japan gets it, and in English, too.
For example, my blog recently critiqued a Japan Times article on the internationalization of Japan’s youth (“Coming of age: 1 in 8 new adults in Tokyo are not Japanese”). As usual, somebody trolled:
“Why is this a good thing? Japan needs to stay Japanese. Keep your Leftist, neo-Marxist ideology out of Japan. Japan does not want to go down the same Leftist road as Canada, UK, Europe, etc. Japan must remain an ethnostate. Keep the poz (HIV-positive) out. We see how that it’s destroying the West. Multiculturalism and diversity are a cancer, and I hope to never see it in Japan.”
This supremacist bile is common in the Oort cloud of online haters — the habitues of message boards such as 4chan and Reddit, who swarm, thrive and mobilize in anonymous echo chambers.
Like their Japanese counterparts, they consider the racial “other” the enemy, and find inspiration in Japan both as an online community (4chan is in fact the English version of 2chan, and is owned by 2chan’s founder) and, as noted above, as an “ethnostate.”
Consider the notable white supremacists who are Japan fanboys:
Jared Taylor, author and guru of America’s so-called alt-right, is a fluent speaker of Japanese, born in Kobe to missionary parents and schooled in Japan until high school. A self-described white separatist, he believes Japan will be more successful this century than mongrel America due to its “racial and cultural homogeneity.”
Richard Spencer, the white supremacist leader who coined the term “alt-right,” advocates America’s “peaceful ethnic cleansing” into a “white ethnostate.” Cloaking ethno-superiority as “identitarianism” (which means, “you identify with your race, with your people, with your culture”), his spokesman claimed, “Everyone in Japan is an identitarian.”
William Daniel Johnson, chairman of the white nationalist American Freedom Party, wrote a book (and a proposed constitutional amendment) advocating the deportation of all nonwhites from America. Majoring in Japanese in college, he is fluent in the language after his Mormon mission in Tohoku, and prospers under what The Guardian calls “an uncanny connection between Japan and white nationalism in America.”
Even mass murderer Anders Behring Breivik, the neo-Nazi who killed 69 people at a Labor Party island youth retreat in 2011, is an ardent Japanophile. In his manifesto, he specifically praised Japan as “a model country” for avoiding multiculturalism.
Supremacists see Japan as a viable national alternative, not only because Japan can get away with policies that embed racism and keep immigrants out, but also, more importantly, because Japan gets the acceptance and respect of other rich countries regardless.
Japan’s incubators of hate have returned the favor, offering templates for supremacists worldwide to convert their trolling into real political power.
Steve Bannon, the engineer of Donald Trump’s successful presidential election strategy, is another Japan fan. He was here last December at the Japanese Conservative Political Action Conference, proclaiming Prime Minister Shinzo Abe the pioneer of Trumpism — “Trump before Trump.”
According to Joshua Green, in his bestselling book “Devil’s Bargain,” Bannon harnessed the power of online white male hate, “a rolling tumbleweed of wounded male id and aggression.” Recruiting “rootless white males” from the online gaming community into propaganda outlet Breitbart (the “crown jewel of the alt-right’s media universe”), he is now spearheading an international racist social movement.
These rootless white males find succor in Japan. They enjoy one of the world’s largest gaming communities. They are taken in by narratives of subservient women digging white men (The New York Times opined that “exclusively dating Asian women is practically a white-nationalist rite of passage”). And in the land of the hikikomori (extreme antisocial recluses), they find a society making allowances for awkward, introverted people who communicate best without ever leaving their room.
They also find purpose. As noted above, if anyone is critical of Japan’s nerd terrarium, they pile on, like white samurai. Even though by doing so, they encourage the discrimination that affects them adversely.
The white samurai now join the ranks of the other historical figures who have defended Japan from charges of institutionalized racism.
They join the academics, who are compelled (by the “chrysanthemum club” old guard who explain away Japan’s racism as misunderstood cultural foibles, and by the Japanese institutions that fund their departments) to stick to talking about the “nice things” about Japan.
They join the international diplomats and businessmen who seek to preserve “the relationship,” and prioritize trade over human rights….. (more on the linked article).
And Kim waited until Dotard was under lots of pressure before he made the ego play.
I figure Kim Jong Un will play this to the hilt knowing Trump is desperate for some ‘real’ achievement to brag about. Any positive agreement may come at heavy cost to the USA before NK reneges.

As noted earlier, Obama just had to suggest he’d be open to a meeting with Dinnerjacket and the press blew a collective fuse.
No it won’t. It just means they’ll be wrong. Doesn’t mean anyone but experts and people who follow this stuff closely will know that the pundits are full of fecal matter and that Trump has essentially given away one of our key pieces of leverage.

My guess is that the “talking” was largely about how Kim doesn’t expect Trump to get something for nothing, that any talk about doing away with nukes is going to involve the very sort of payments that Trump sneered at on the campaign trail as “weakness.”
Oh, and the talk about not conducting any tests? That’s impossible to verify, so the fact that Trump is trumpeting it as a “win” shows he’s so desperate to clutch something that looks like such that he’ll take whatever wafer-thin assurances Kim is willing to throw his way.

If Trump had done as past administrations had done and insisted up multi-party talks, then he might not only face the possibility that his own negotiators would find a path forward that avoided war, but it would also mean that the other parties to the talks might stand in his way by insisting on letting the process work. One-on-one talks lets him claim that the talks “failed” due to Kim’s recalcitrance and move forward with military strikes.

Saw one Freeper try to spin this like Ronnie meeting Gorbachev. But there’s a very distinct difference: The US and USSR were equals, at least as far as geopolitical concerns. Our military will follow when we can no longer afford to flush 1 trillion dollars down the toilet designing our next generation weapon system that’s almost as good as the current one.
China’s most likely play is to hope NK takes out some of our bases in the Pacific and then to invade NK from the north to prevent a flood of refugees and maintain a buffer zone between itself and the South.
Both of the countries are served best by letting NK do whatever damage to the US that it can in any confrontation and then moving against NK to secure their interests. Their interest is not served by getting involved in a nuclear exchange with the US and having us plant big glowing mushrooms in their major cities and military bases.

Rexxon Tillerson, who is in Ethiopia at the moment, issued a statement to try to clean up after Trump’s mess today.

I’m not an expert on where the weapons labs are located and weather conditions in the region, so I’m not sure what the most likely fallout pattern would be, but I have been ground detonating some 100 kt SLBMs and it looks like the general pattern of fallout is to the northeast and largely remains within NK unless detonated close to the border.
Russian television outlets, which have been silent on the issue of the people poisoned with nerve agents in the United Kingdom, opened up on that topic today.

Which I believe was a surprise to Ms. Denhollander’s husband, who is a (currently on hiatus) PhD student at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Denhollander herself was one of the first women to blow the whistle on Larry Nassar and she was instrumental in bringing together the many, many women who were sexually assaulted by this POS.
What’s interesting is that Rachael Denhollander’s work continues. She has taken up for the victims of child abuse within the Sovereign Grace Ministries/Sovereign Grace Churches, whose victimization was credibly covered up by the leadership, headed up by C.J. Mahaney. She’s written statements laying out what she has learned from the information already out there, and those statements are damning against Mahaney.
Mahaney was scheduled to speak in April to 10,000 preachers and wannabes at “Together For The Gospel 2018” in Louisville. (Some of you may remember I have said I would be protesting at this shindig.) Well, Mahaney, under some pressure, withdrew yesterday from this rock festival of preaching, although his withdrawal statement is rather bitter.
I’m still going to protest at Together For The Gospel, although I’m a bit more free now to consider a protest of a pre-session put on by the Alliance Defending Freedom, which has every indication of turning into a LGBT bashfest, because it’s about the so-called “Nashville Statement” from last year. However, there is still the large issue of how nine other speakers and 10K attendees didn’t seem to think there was a problem with a guy credibly accused of covering up child abuse being on the same stage.
Let me put it this way: It was infinitely more acceptable to have CJ Mahaney on the stage, even though there’s credible evidence he covered up child abuse, than to have ANY WOMAN preaching or teaching. Because these guys think we women are somehow permanently poisoned by the alleged sin of Eve.
I’m thinking about asking the men (it’s 95% men attending) to give up their wristbands and forego attending as a demonstration that they don’t agree with the “Together For The Gospel” crowd of the years of passes they’ve given Mahaney. And yes, I know it would be a tough sell. This is a popular thing—there are people asking on Twitter if there are wristbands for sale, for a three-day meeting of the same (now nine) guys blathering on about various dogmas. And yes, I am concerned someone might punch me if I asked them to give up their wristband if I put the transaction as starkly as all that, but it’s an idea I can’t get out of my head.
It’s not enough to just stand out there with a sign. I think I have to get in their faces and ask them—do you really care about child abuse—or does it really not matter because of the spectacular preaching you’re going to hear? (Hint: These guys are DULL.)

Pretty sure they’re gone. I think cruise missiles are strictly conventional weapons now.
Sad, really - because that’s precisely the weapon you’d want for this nightmare scenario, in addition to some other things.
I’d sure like to know what those X-37B’s have been doing loitering in space for weeks/months at end (you know those guys who fly those things would love to hoon ‘em past some Russian and Chinese military Eyes In The Sky just to give then a little sniff….)
