Britain First leader and deputy leader jailed for hate crimes

The leader and deputy leader of far-right group Britain First have been found guilty of religiously aggravated harassment.

Paul Golding, 36, and Jayda Fransen, 32, were arrested over the distribution of leaflets and posting of online videos during a gang-rape trial.

Fransen was convicted of three counts of religiously aggravated harassment. Golding was found guilty of one charge.

Both were jailed at Folkestone Magistrates’ Court.

Fransen was handed a 36-week sentence and Golding 18 weeks.

During their trial in January, the court heard they had targeted homes and people in Kent whom they believed were connected to a rape trial at Canterbury Crown Court where three Muslim men and a teenager were convicted of rape and jailed.

Both Fransen and Golding were convicted on a joint charge of religiously aggravated harassment after an incident last May at 555 Pizza takeaway in Ramsgate, when Fransen banged on the windows and doors of the shop and screamed “paedophile” and “foreigner”.

However, in each case, they instead targeted innocent members of the public.

Georgia (1977; rape case with a death penalty) and expanded in Kennedy v. This is the problem. We have two communities who hear a term like “Speaking Truth To Power”, and it means exactly different things. To a Liberal, it means talking to the rich who want to maintain expand their power. To the Conservatives, it means talking to the educated people who believe in science and facts who they believe are keeping them down and have no respect for them. And let’s face it, most of us don’t. We view them as slack-jawed yokels.

This seems to me to be an intractable problem so long as propaganda is the teat of knowledge for the Conservatives, because it is working extremely well, and has for decades.

When the car was invented, courts routinely struck down any traffic law, testing, or registration as unconstitutional. As the road carnage increased, state legislatures (especially Nebraska and Iowa, at the time the states with the most autos), then courts started cracking down on the idea … with rights (travel by automobile) comes responsibility (proof of competency, inspection, &c).

A person at the Oklahoma City University Law Review wrote an exhaustive article titled The Orphaned Right: The Right to Travel by Automobile, 1890-1950 (abstract, full document may be downloaded free or viewed as a PDF there - it is a fascinating article on the history of automobile licensing and registration).

The last “right to travel” cases were fought in the Fifties. After the Thirties or so, such cases universally lost in courts.

Similar arguments were made when the velocipede was invented and states tried to prohibit them or register them, but velocipedes (and later bicycles) continue to this day to be largely ignored by states (though some laws requiring helmets and such have been fought by libertarians as unconstitutional based on the old auto right to travel that existed in the nation).

The article goes into so called “Medi-share” Christian alternatives to regular insurance regulated by the ACA. They are actually primarily another Christian grift to take advantage of conservative marks.

The lede:

NORFOLK, Neb. ― Danielle Lammers, a 35-year-old administrative assistant, wife and mother, had a bump on the back of her lower thigh. It had been there for as long as she could remember, but in July of last year it started to hurt while the family was on vacation at a lakeside cabin in Missouri. Her family doctor referred her to a surgeon who could remove it, though she soon learned she was pregnant and had to put off the procedure until she was in her second trimester.

Both the doctor and the surgeon seemed confident the growth was benign. It wasn’t. A biopsy showed that Danielle had clear-cell sarcoma, a rare, potentially lethal cancer that typically affects people aged 20 to 40. Suddenly, Danielle needed another, more invasive operation. And she had to get it at an academic medical center in Omaha two hours away, because the doctors closer to her home in Norfolk, a farming and manufacturing city of about 25,000 residents, had never seen it before.

Well, a defence lawyer is duty-bound to represent his or her client to the utmost of his or her ability.

If the lawyer tries that gambit and the investigator or prosecutor tells the lawyer to take a hike, it costs the lawyer and defendant nothing.

If it works (reduced charges, dropped charges), then the lawyer has successfully represented his client.

I suppose you can’t blame Mr. Trump’s lawyers for trying that idea. Mr. Mueller either tells them “no” and they lose nothing, or he agrees to some or all of their terms and they gain an edge in the investigation.

Frequently in less-serious criminal investigations lawyers will tell the police or district attorney to “stick it, dig up your own evidence.”

The idea that this is very public is to either gain public sympathy or they are desperate. If they had a better argument to present, they would present that.

Yes. We stand. Moreover, a whole lot of people who were on the fence about “both parties being just the same” (a pernicious right-wing talking point for decades) are learning that’s a lie, and translating that realisation into votes.

We’ll have to see how the special election in Penna. for the US House and the election for the Tenn. state senate goes, but so far the Democrats are on a roll since the election.

It is noteworthy that in Texas for the first time in decades, there is a Democratic challenger in every Texas house and senate race in the state.

It wasn’t too long in my own state we had a Democratic governor (John Kerry, who replaced the recently deceased Charles Thone - for whom our flags are still at half-staff).

This is not unwinnable. It is hard, but democracy is hard. Every generation has to learn that it cannot simply sit back and watch politics go by.

As evidenced by the massive political uprising by the young adults against the NRA, entrenched conservative interests are in retreat across much of the political battlefield. (I think I’m done with war analogies now.)

We went out to Port Chester last night and saw Elvis Costello & The Imposters. It was everything I expected it to be and more. The core band is mostly the old Attractions (Pete Thomas on drums and the incredible Steve Nieve on keyboards, with Davey Faragher on bass in place of Steve Thomas).

If they come close to your neck of the woods and you like the early Attractions stuff, I urge you to go. The show was mostly from the first three albums, the Two Tone singles (he did ‘I Can’t Stand Up’ and ‘Girls Talk’ pretty much straight away), a couple of brand new tunes. Just about every hit.

Declan was a much more crowd-friendly front man than I remember, joking with the crowd and telling stories between songs. And Steve Nieve is without a doubt one of the best musicians I’ve ever seen live. He played all the organ and synth stuff, but his work on the grand piano was just jaw-dropping.

And Costello did actual guitar solos, which cracked me up! He would have been drummed out of the New Wave Club for soloing back in the day, but he was working his effects and jumping on the wah-wah pedal like Hendrix. And he had his two AC-30s cranked, which got big bonus points from an old volume hog like me. :)

The shows may have just been a short NYC-based run (one night in Brooklyn and 3 in Port Chester), but if he takes this on the road, just go. Your inner New Wave fan will thank me later.

Sounds about like the show I saw with him back a few years ago here in Columbus. He is not the angry sullen Elive of his youth. He is now a master and comfortable with it.

I always have liked Elvis’ guitar work. He has his own style, but it works with his tunes.

And Stevie is great. I wonder what Elvis’ tunes would have sounded like all these years had he not had Steve by his side the whole way. I almost see Nieve as his arranger, because his keyboard parts make so many of the tunes. They are a great partnership.

EC and Nieve did a new tune called ‘Elise In Tears,’ just Elvis on vocals and Nieve on grand piano. Dude, the power. The beauty. It was a song no one outside of the band knew, but it was probably the high point of the show.

Yes, I’m raving like a fan boy. The show was that good. I’d go again tomorrow night if we didn’t already have other plans.

Trump frequently referenced Saucier’s case during the 2016 campaign as an example of what he said was an individual punished for a lesser offense than what his rival, Hillary Clinton, did with classified information on her private email server when she was secretary of state.

Saucier’s lawyers also cited Clinton’s case in an attempt to receive leniency in sentencing proceedings, which took place during the height of the campaign. Prosecutors rejected the comparison for several reasons, including the fact that Saucier acknowledged wrongdoing.

Bossier Parish pastor arrested for possession of meth

A former Bossier Parish pastor has been arrested after admitting to police he had meth at his Bossier City home.

Andy C. Harris, 56, of 2406 Benton Road in Bossier City, was charged with possession of a Schedule II controlled dangerous substance (methamphetamine) and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Harris was the senior pastor at The Church of the Cross, an Assemblies of God congregation perhaps best known for the 199-foot exterior cross it erected in 2009 on its property along U.S. 80 in Haughton.

Church officials confirmed Friday that Harris had resigned, but they wouldn’t comment further. References to Harris on the church’s site and some on social media have been deleted.

Harris lives in a 3,519-square-foot home on an acreage, according to parish property records. Detectives found approximately 3.4 grams of suspected meth for personal use, along with a smoking device and snorting straw at the home, the sheriff’s office said.

It was just Elvis standing at the end of a big ol’ concert grand piano with Steve accompanying him on many of his great songs. They were in a nice theater type setting. It allowed you to really get a feel for how great a wordsmith he is in his lyrics.

Tipton County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Billy Daugherty told WREG-TV in Memphis that 39-year-old Ronnie Gorton has been accused by three people, including one under the age of 13.

Gorton was indicted Monday and jailed Tuesday. He declined to answer questions from reporters as he entered jail.

He is the former pastor of Awakening Church in Atoka.

Gorton faces one count of rape, 16 counts of statutory rape by an authority figure, 17 counts of sexual battery by an authority figure, five counts of aggravated sexual battery and several other charges.

The only thing I can figure is the usual deference to authority that is the hallmark of conservatives (who are not leaders). A pastor is an authority figure, so conservatives defer to him or her. The assertion “I’m trustworthy, I’m a pastor” is enough (plus it has the added authority of a Man of God [tm]).

Less-authoritarian denominations (so-called liberal churches) do not call these people and condemn them, even within the context of their alleged faith (forget secular law), and thus enable them.

I would give my next paycheck to actually hear a so-called liberal denomination come out and condemn a conservative church that covers up this crap, except that is a sucker bet: I know none will.

The lawyer, Michael Cohen, also regularly used the same email account during 2016 negotiations with the actress — whose legal name is Stephanie Clifford — before she signed a nondisclosure agreement, a source familiar with the discussions told NBC News. And Clifford’s attorney at the time addressed correspondence to Cohen in his capacity at the Trump Organization and as “Special Counsel to Donald J. Trump,” the source said.

What the other millions of women are marching for is not defined by these women or their relationship to Farrakhan. If people let the marches become about these women, then it will be weakened when it is needed most.

I’m really worried about the attitude that taking part in a march that involves people with yucky views means we are adopting those views. There are no marches (on our side for sure) of any size that don’t involve such people. Not antiwar marches, not science/ antigun/ environmental/ prochoice - none.

If we can’t say “I don’t agree with X, but I support the goals of the group as a whole and so I am marching” then we are completely stymied. It’s fine to say Farrakhan stans should go away - they should! - but there is no way for us to make that happen. Our choices are (1) march; (2) not march; or (3) splinter into a million different groups. Only the first demonstrates any power and makes any change more likely to happen.

While I caucused for Sen. Sanders in my state, I rapidly soured on him as the primary season went on. I first rationalised it the way PUMAs did in 2008 (though I did not have the right to vote then due to emerging from homelessness) when I supported Barack Obama. As the primaries continued toward California and it became mathematically impossible for Sanders to win, I was over him still pushing the issue.

I would be all in favour of the California Primary being held at the front of the pack rather than last. California as such a large and populous state would have the benefit of primary candidates campaigning there first, and knocking out weak candidates right away.

And can anybody explain how Cohen paying for the NDA is not an illegal campaign contribution? The only way it’s not illegal is if Trump paid for it personally, not through the Trump Org. In trying to insulate trump from the NDA payment Cohen has put both of them into a campaign finance law trap. And if Cohen didn’t file an IRS Form 709 for tax year 2016 listing the payment and either paid the gift tax or applied it against his lifetime estate exemption then he’s committed tax fraud.

Cohen has painted himself into a corner and the paint is flaming napalm.

1. Fuck Bernie Sanders. Vigorously. The guy is NOT a Democrat, and his endorsement/lack-of shouldn’t carry any more weight than any other “celebrity”, Senator or no.

2. That said, I can’t see why support for Diane Feinstein ought to be some sort of Democratic touchstone for the midterms: she’s 84 years old, been in the Senate forever, and except for the issue of seniority, it’s hard to see where her retirement (see point 3) would be some sort of disaster.

3. This is California: one of the bluest states in the Union: if DiFi were to bow out (hopefully “gracefully”, and hopefully work to elect a Democratic successor) what are the chances of the Republicans grabbing the seat anyway? Their bench in CA is godawfully thin, and unpopular statewide: TBH, the Dem bullpen isn’t that fantastic either, but still an improvement over the GOP.

So did the local large town around here. I was surprised, because this is quite a red area, but the high school kids were on it and the paper (also quite red) covered it on the front page, and nicely.
