Donald Trump Retweeted Their Anti-Muslim Videos, and Never Apologized. Now Leaders of a Far Right UK Group Have Been Convicted of Hate Crimes.

Britain First leader and deputy leader jailed for hate crimes

The leader and deputy leader of far-right group Britain First have been found guilty of religiously aggravated harassment.

Paul Golding, 36, and Jayda Fransen, 32, were arrested over the distribution of leaflets and posting of online videos during a gang-rape trial.

Fransen was convicted of three counts of religiously aggravated harassment. Golding was found guilty of one charge.

Both were jailed at Folkestone Magistrates’ Court.

Fransen was handed a 36-week sentence and Golding 18 weeks.

During their trial in January, the court heard they had targeted homes and people in Kent whom they believed were connected to a rape trial at Canterbury Crown Court where three Muslim men and a teenager were convicted of rape and jailed.

[…]

Both Fransen and Golding were convicted on a joint charge of religiously aggravated harassment after an incident last May at 555 Pizza takeaway in Ramsgate, when Fransen banged on the windows and doors of the shop and screamed “paedophile” and “foreigner”.

However, in each case, they instead targeted innocent members of the public.

This shit is objectively fucking crazy.

Can’t help but notice they’re “simulating” with a handgun rather than an AR.

And I stand by my previous assertion that there are people very, very excited about the idea that kids are going to be scared shitless all the time because there’s random armed people hovering about. And that what happens next will be making excuses for why a teacher shot a black kid or a mentally ill kid, because “safety.”

You don’t fire any gun, even using blanks, in an unsafe direction and there is no safe fucking direction inside a goddamned school. You don’t need to expose children to gunfire to get them to recognize it when it happens, that shit is self explanatory in real time. We’re practice terrorizing children to get them prepared for being terrorized for real while actively dismissing their political activism.

Everything about this is wrong.

I’m pretty sure that would be knocked down as grossly excessive and disproportionate punishment under Supreme Court cases Coker v. Georgia (1977; rape case with a death penalty) and expanded in Kennedy v. Louisiana (2008; where the court ruled the death penalty is unconstitutional where murder did not occur or in crimes against the State).

In other words, this is a non-starter. We are not the Philippines or Singapore.

Belafon  Mar 9, 2018 • 8:54:00pm

People are the principal culprits behind the spread of “fake news” on the Internet, according to a new study examining the flow of stories on Twitter. People, the study’s authors say, prefer false news; as a result, false news travels faster, farther, and deeper through the social network than factual news. Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology found those patterns applied to every subject they studied, including not only politics and urban legends, but also business, science, and technology. The researchers found false claims were 70 percent more likely than the truth to be shared on Twitter; true stories were rarely retweeted by more than 1,000 people, but the top 1 percent of false stories were routinely shared by 1,000 to 100,000 people. In addition, the researchers said, it took true stories about six times as long as false ones to reach 1,500 people.

Most people don’t like skepticism, and most particularly don’t like information that prompts self-examination. Fake news is gratifying because it’s emotion-driven, simplifies the world, and tends to make things black-and-white. It’s a cheap fix.

Fake news is to some degree propaganda, particularly when directed and amplified by brigades and bots…but it’s also part of a the larger ecosystem of consumption-grade trite horseshit that comes with people treating information as a brand preference.

Let’s be fair. Let’s be fair. Years from now, when the “speeches” and tweets of Donald Trump are collected and analyzed, it will be obvious that Koko the gorilla had not only a larger vocabulary but better comprehension than Trump. The real problem is that some 62 million American voters didn’t care that he was an ignorant fool, they actually liked him that way.

He met their minimum requirements. He spoke “truth to power” in a way that a Liberal could not imagine the term, but was as real to any Conservative as A, B, and C.

This is the problem. We have two communities who hear a term like “Speaking Truth To Power”, and it means exactly different things. To a Liberal, it means talking to the rich who want to maintain expand their power. To the Conservatives, it means talking to the educated people who believe in science and facts who they believe are keeping them down and have no respect for them. And let’s face it, most of us don’t. We view them as slack-jawed yokels.

This seems to me to be an intractable problem so long as propaganda is the teat of knowledge for the Conservatives, because it is working extremely well, and has for decades.

I mean, the media can’t hold Trump responsible for things he said more than 72 hours ago, let alone condemn the people who voted for the racist, addled, unqualified toad. But hey, those millions of marchers are totally culpable because some of the organizers like Farrakhan despite the fact that the marches had piss all to do with Farrakhan or his views.

Strawman. There haven’t been millions of marchers imbued with this new information yet. We’re talking about future events now that the shameful background of the main organizers is known.

Trump’s the head of the Republican Party. It’s “leadership” and thought leaders are generously seeded by racists, misogynists and anti-Semites, yet the voters and politicians of this party are held to a lesser standard than the marchers. It’s directly comparable. Two movements. One white and conservative. One diverse and progressive. To different standards.

A similar thing happened when the leaders of the Movement for Black Lives endorsed the BDS call against Israel. Invading and coopting movements with legitimate stand alone grievances in order to induce this kind of mission creep from within is a signature tactic of the anti-semitic far left, and it plays right into right wing narratives every damn time.

And I had another odd vision of you like that the other morning, you were standing up and conducting an orchestra: I hope that is a sign that you are taking control of your life and making things sound they way you want them to.

Social media are for keeping track of family and friends, cute kid and pet photos and videos and upcoming events.

To rely on them as a source of news on politics or current events is massively idiotic.

I recall my girlfriend showing me a headline from her FB feed “Great Barrier Reef Declared Dead”. Even the content of the article itself contradicted that statement, it was just about the fact that the GBR lost nearly 18% of its volume in 2016, but it is far from dead.

Cliven Bundy’s ‘Legal Idiot’ Son Ryan Running For Governor Of Nevada Legal Idiots (Wonkette)

‘I Got Off In A Mistrial’ Is One Great Campaign Slogan

God, the Creator of the Universe and Supreme Being, has denied any involvement in yesterday’s decision by Ryan Bundy, son of welfare rancher Cliven Bundy, to run as an independent candidate for governor of Nevada. “No thank you. I’m busy enough with the NCAA tournament, lost kittens, and any number of college entrance exams. Whatever he may say, I have no input whatsoever on that durn fool’s political decisions,” the Lord Of Hosts announced through a burning spokesbush. “Last advice I gave him was to take up a nice quiet hobby like antiquing, and next thing I know he’s seized a wildlife refuge. Whole family’s nuts, you ask Me.”

The younger Bundy, who during his trial for the takeover of the Oregon wildlife refuge went full-bozo Sovereign Citizen and declared himself an “idiot of the Legal Society,” to whom man’s law doesn’t apply, made the announcement during an interview with the Nevada Independent. He plans to file his candidacy March 14 and then go on a speaking tour of the state, which ought to make for some interesting video as he lays forth his political philosophy. It is unclear at this early date whether he will insist his campaign bus display only homemade cardboard license plates.

Those are fine if he plans to only drive on privately owned and operated roads.

re: #125 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

Those are fine if he plans to only drive on privately owned and operated roads.

That goes back to the original interpretation of travel by automobile.

When the car was invented, courts routinely struck down any traffic law, testing, or registration as unconstitutional. That theory rested on IX Amendment interpretations, as well as common law interpretations that you pretty much had the right to walk, drag, push, or pull anything across the landscape. (For example, no one was taxed or registered to use the Oregon Trail.)

As the road carnage increased, state legislatures (especially Nebraska and Iowa, at the time the states with the most autos), then courts started cracking down on the idea … with rights (travel by automobile) comes responsibility (proof of competency, inspection, &c).

A person at the Oklahoma City University Law Review wrote an exhaustive article titled The Orphaned Right: The Right to Travel by Automobile, 1890-1950 (abstract, full document may be downloaded free or viewed as a PDF there - it is a fascinating article on the history of automobile licensing and registration).

The last “right to travel” cases were fought in the Fifties. After the Thirties or so, such cases universally lost in courts.

Similar arguments were made when the velocipede was invented and states tried to prohibit them or register them, but velocipedes (and later bicycles) continue to this day to be largely ignored by states (though some laws requiring helmets and such have been fought by libertarians as unconstitutional based on the old auto right to travel that existed in the nation).

127
Anymouse 🌹  Mar 10, 2018 • 4:43:43am

It is possible with the exhaustive body of legal theory behind imposing legal requirements on cars and drivers (one of the most restricted actions one can do in public), those arguments could be used in reining in the extremist libertarian interpretations of the II Amendment (and for the same reason: the carnage is becoming unacceptable).

The NRA right now is in the same position as the AAA and the American Wheelmen’s Association (now defunct), arguing for absolutist rights without responsibility. When public opinion turned against the auto clubs, they started losing in court.

Public opinion is now turning against the NRA.

That definitely makes this year’s election important (along with the aging Anthony Kennedy and Notorious RBG on the Supreme Court).

What’s particularly interesting is that gun violence is actually down overall since the crime spike of the 1980s/early 1990s. Mass shootings, however, are way up. Suicides are actually rather constant though trending up in recent years. (source).

The gun violence carnage is finally catching up with the NRA after decades of the NRA preventing meaningful action.

It has been theorised that banning lead from paint and gasoline had an effect on the overall violence numbers declining (not just shootings, but things like assault as well). I’m not educated enough to evaluate those claims, though it seems that could be true (as lead ingestion is known to lead to violent behaviour).

The article goes into so called “Medi-share” Christian alternatives to regular insurance regulated by the ACA. They are actually primarily another Christian grift to take advantage of conservative marks.

The lede:

NORFOLK, Neb. ― Danielle Lammers, a 35-year-old administrative assistant, wife and mother, had a bump on the back of her lower thigh. It had been there for as long as she could remember, but in July of last year it started to hurt while the family was on vacation at a lakeside cabin in Missouri. Her family doctor referred her to a surgeon who could remove it, though she soon learned she was pregnant and had to put off the procedure until she was in her second trimester.

Both the doctor and the surgeon seemed confident the growth was benign. It wasn’t. A biopsy showed that Danielle had clear-cell sarcoma, a rare, potentially lethal cancer that typically affects people aged 20 to 40. Suddenly, Danielle needed another, more invasive operation. And she had to get it at an academic medical center in Omaha two hours away, because the doctors closer to her home in Norfolk, a farming and manufacturing city of about 25,000 residents, had never seen it before.

“…People who join sharing ministries must generally agree, in advance, to forgo lawsuits and take any disputes to arbitration. Usually that means “biblically based mediation and arbitration,” which is a sometimes controversial method that relies partly on religious law. A member with a problem cannot appeal to state insurance regulators for help, because sharing ministries fall outside their jurisdiction.”

Well, a defence lawyer is duty-bound to represent his or her client to the utmost of his or her ability.

If the lawyer tries that gambit and the investigator or prosecutor tells the lawyer to take a hike, it costs the lawyer and defendant nothing.

If it works (reduced charges, dropped charges), then the lawyer has successfully represented his client.

I suppose you can’t blame Mr. Trump’s lawyers for trying that idea. Mr. Mueller either tells them “no” and they lose nothing, or he agrees to some or all of their terms and they gain an edge in the investigation.

Frequently in less-serious criminal investigations lawyers will tell the police or district attorney to “stick it, dig up your own evidence.”

The idea that this is very public is to either gain public sympathy or they are desperate. If they had a better argument to present, they would present that.

Yes. We stand. Moreover, a whole lot of people who were on the fence about “both parties being just the same” (a pernicious right-wing talking point for decades) are learning that’s a lie, and translating that realisation into votes.

We’ll have to see how the special election in Penna. for the US House and the election for the Tenn. state senate goes, but so far the Democrats are on a roll since the election.

It is noteworthy that in Texas for the first time in decades, there is a Democratic challenger in every Texas house and senate race in the state.

It wasn’t too long in my own state we had a Democratic governor (John Kerry, who replaced the recently deceased Charles Thone - for whom our flags are still at half-staff).

This is not unwinnable. It is hard, but democracy is hard. Every generation has to learn that it cannot simply sit back and watch politics go by.

As evidenced by the massive political uprising by the young adults against the NRA, entrenched conservative interests are in retreat across much of the political battlefield. (I think I’m done with war analogies now.)

What the hell is he talking about here:

Congratulations to Kristian Saucier, a man who has served proudly in the Navy, on your newly found Freedom. Now you can go out and have the life you deserve!

I have no idea who this person is, but does Trump think the Navy is a prison or something?

As for President Xi above that, he’s no fool, and China has a very long history of playing fools. I’m sure Mr. Xi knows exactly what buttons to push to make Donald Trump feel special.

Also, I imagine Mr. Xi wants no war in North Korea initiated by the USA or anyone else. If he can stroke Mr. Trump’s ego enough, he might even be able to talk Trump into some sort of “peace in our time” statement and claim credit for it.

President Xi does seem to be interested in centralising power, but he doesn’t strike me either as a narcissist or a fool.

We went out to Port Chester last night and saw Elvis Costello & The Imposters. It was everything I expected it to be and more. The core band is mostly the old Attractions (Pete Thomas on drums and the incredible Steve Nieve on keyboards, with Davey Faragher on bass in place of Steve Thomas).

If they come close to your neck of the woods and you like the early Attractions stuff, I urge you to go. The show was mostly from the first three albums, the Two Tone singles (he did ‘I Can’t Stand Up’ and ‘Girls Talk’ pretty much straight away), a couple of brand new tunes. Just about every hit.

Declan was a much more crowd-friendly front man than I remember, joking with the crowd and telling stories between songs. And Steve Nieve is without a doubt one of the best musicians I’ve ever seen live. He played all the organ and synth stuff, but his work on the grand piano was just jaw-dropping.

And Costello did actual guitar solos, which cracked me up! He would have been drummed out of the New Wave Club for soloing back in the day, but he was working his effects and jumping on the wah-wah pedal like Hendrix. And he had his two AC-30s cranked, which got big bonus points from an old volume hog like me. :)

The shows may have just been a short NYC-based run (one night in Brooklyn and 3 in Port Chester), but if he takes this on the road, just go. Your inner New Wave fan will thank me later.

I always have liked Elvis’ guitar work. He has his own style, but it works with his tunes.

And Stevie is great. I wonder what Elvis’ tunes would have sounded like all these years had he not had Steve by his side the whole way. I almost see Nieve as his arranger, because his keyboard parts make so many of the tunes. They are a great partnership.

They did a few tunes I never would have expected them to attempt live - they did ‘Beyond Belief,’ which I know gave them fits in the studio and led EC to hate it for a while. ‘Every Day I Write The Book’ was every bit the perfect sparkly pop tune it was on record. ‘Miracle Man,’ ‘Waiting Till the End of the World,’ ‘Alison’ done solo, ‘Watching the Detectives.’ All great, and nearly 100% faithful to the originals.

EC and Nieve did a new tune called ‘Elise In Tears,’ just Elvis on vocals and Nieve on grand piano. Dude, the power. The beauty. It was a song no one outside of the band knew, but it was probably the high point of the show.

a bit of further explanation:
Trump Pardons Ex-Navy Sailor Sentenced For Photos Of Submarine

Trump frequently referenced Saucier’s case during the 2016 campaign as an example of what he said was an individual punished for a lesser offense than what his rival, Hillary Clinton, did with classified information on her private email server when she was secretary of state.

Saucier’s lawyers also cited Clinton’s case in an attempt to receive leniency in sentencing proceedings, which took place during the height of the campaign. Prosecutors rejected the comparison for several reasons, including the fact that Saucier acknowledged wrongdoing.

Saucier served as a machinist’s mate on the USS Alexandria, a nuclear attack submarine, from 2007 to 2012. According to court documents, he used his personal cellphone to take six photos of classified areas, instruments and equipment in the sub — including the nuclear reactor — in 2009.

It has been theorised that banning lead from paint and gasoline had an effect on the overall violence numbers declining (not just shootings, but things like assault as well). I’m not educated enough to evaluate those claims, though it seems that could be true (as lead ingestion is known to lead to violent behaviour).

Here’s a good article, lots of graphs as well, that makes the case pretty well

Not just violence; also teen pregnancy, ADHD.

There’s even a theory that lead pipes in aqueducts, lead cooking pots and lead paint on dishes is partially responsible for the decline and fall of the Roman Empire.

Bossier Parish pastor arrested for possession of meth

A former Bossier Parish pastor has been arrested after admitting to police he had meth at his Bossier City home.

Andy C. Harris, 56, of 2406 Benton Road in Bossier City, was charged with possession of a Schedule II controlled dangerous substance (methamphetamine) and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Harris was the senior pastor at The Church of the Cross, an Assemblies of God congregation perhaps best known for the 199-foot exterior cross it erected in 2009 on its property along U.S. 80 in Haughton.

Church officials confirmed Friday that Harris had resigned, but they wouldn’t comment further. References to Harris on the church’s site and some on social media have been deleted.

Harris lives in a 3,519-square-foot home on an acreage, according to parish property records. Detectives found approximately 3.4 grams of suspected meth for personal use, along with a smoking device and snorting straw at the home, the sheriff’s office said.

My periodic reminder:

In the 1960’s, early 70’s, liberal activists were super-active. They were well-organized, loud, public, in the streets day after day.

From 1964-1974, we got

Civil Rights Act
Voting Rights Act
EEOC, Fair Housing
Medicare, Medicaid
EPA
OSHA
Roe v Wade
end of the draft
lowering of the voting age

but once the draft ended, the liberals called MISSION ACCOMPLISHED! and went home. Conservatives called HALFTIME! and went back to the locker room to strategize for the second half.

Reagan’s campaign, and everything since, is a reflection of who’s on the battlefield and who didn’t bother.

It was just Elvis standing at the end of a big ol’ concert grand piano with Steve accompanying him on many of his great songs. They were in a nice theater type setting. It allowed you to really get a feel for how great a wordsmith he is in his lyrics.

West Tennessee Pastor Indicted, Accused of Sexual Abuse of Minors

COVINGTON, Tenn. (AP) - A Tennessee pastor has been indicted on 47 charges related to sexual abuse of minors.

Tipton County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Billy Daugherty told WREG-TV in Memphis that 39-year-old Ronnie Gorton has been accused by three people, including one under the age of 13.

Gorton was indicted Monday and jailed Tuesday. He declined to answer questions from reporters as he entered jail.

I don’t either. I never did.

The only thing I can figure is the usual deference to authority that is the hallmark of conservatives (who are not leaders). A pastor is an authority figure, so conservatives defer to him or her. The assertion “I’m trustworthy, I’m a pastor” is enough (plus it has the added authority of a Man of God [tm]).

Less-authoritarian denominations (so-called liberal churches) do not call these people and condemn them, even within the context of their alleged faith (forget secular law), and thus enable them.

I would give my next paycheck to actually hear a so-called liberal denomination come out and condemn a conservative church that covers up this crap, except that is a sucker bet: I know none will.

My periodic reminder:

In the 1960’s, early 70’s, liberal activists were super-active. They were well-organized, loud, public, in the streets day after day.

From 1964-1974, we got

Civil Rights Act
Voting Rights Act
EEOC, Fair Housing
Medicare, Medicaid
EPA
OSHA
Roe v Wade
end of the draft
lowering of the voting age

but once the draft ended, the liberals called MISSION ACCOMPLISHED! and went home. Conservatives called HALFTIME! and went back to the locker room to strategize for the second half.

Reagan’s campaign, and everything since, is a reflection of who’s on the battlefield and who didn’t bother.

Whites also said “Hey, blacks weren’t supposed to be part of the deal.”

Stormy Daniels Is Running Rings Around Trump’s Lawyer

This is quite a crew of miscreants we have running things these days. If they’d planned the Great Train Robbery, they’d have left the money behind and taken the coal from the engine. If they’d burgled the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, they’d have left the Rembrandt and made off with the fire extinguishers and the Men’s Room sign.

Take it away, NBC News.

President Donald Trump’s personal attorney used his Trump Organization email while arranging to transfer money into an account at a Manhattan bank before he wired $130,000 to adult film star Stormy Daniels to buy her silence. The lawyer, Michael Cohen, also regularly used the same email account during 2016 negotiations with the actress — whose legal name is Stephanie Clifford — before she signed a nondisclosure agreement, a source familiar with the discussions told NBC News. And Clifford’s attorney at the time addressed correspondence to Cohen in his capacity at the Trump Organization and as “Special Counsel to Donald J. Trump,” the source said.

Remind me not to hire this guy to set up my money-laundering operation in the Caymans. Or to help me with my parking tickets, for all that.

In a statement last month, Cohen said he used his “personal funds to facilitate a payment” to Clifford, who says she had an intimate relationship with Trump a decade ago. “Neither the Trump Organization nor the Trump campaign was a party to the transaction with Ms. Clifford, and neither reimbursed me for the payment, either directly or indirectly,” Cohen said in that statement. But an email uncovered in the last 24 hours and provided to NBC News by Clifford’s current attorney, Michael Avenatti, shows First Republic Bank and Cohen communicated about the money using his Trump company email address, not his personal gmail account.

I heard someone yesterday float the idea there could be a large Trump slush (offshore?) fund that Cohen is charged to use to clean up Little Trump Messes from time to time. This might be a use of something like a Bitcoin.

Nod nod, wink wink.

I guess the thinking is it is harder to find out what the money is for and where it is coming from if it is not directly tied to anything Trump. Cohen can just transfer it to a good account when needed and then pay from there.

But even that doesn’t seem to answer the questions about how the IRS records it and if all that is illegal.

The 1970 Bank Secrecy Act requires reporting to the IRS any withdrawal or deposit of $10,000 or more to the IRS.

When we bought our car and withdrew the cash to pay for it, the bank required us to fill in the necessary paperwork for the IRS.

In Cohen’s case, he deposited the money in a bank in Manhattan. It doesn’t matter if he stashed it in the Cayman Islands first, if he deposited $130,000 in one giant slug it had to be reported.

The act allows for skirting the law (depositing several amounts of $9,999 in a row, for example).

What the other millions of women are marching for is not defined by these women or their relationship to Farrakhan. If people let the marches become about these women, then it will be weakened when it is needed most.

I’m really worried about the attitude that taking part in a march that involves people with yucky views means we are adopting those views. There are no marches (on our side for sure) of any size that don’t involve such people. Not antiwar marches, not science/ antigun/ environmental/ prochoice - none.

If we can’t say “I don’t agree with X, but I support the goals of the group as a whole and so I am marching” then we are completely stymied. It’s fine to say Farrakhan stans should go away - they should! - but there is no way for us to make that happen. Our choices are (1) march; (2) not march; or (3) splinter into a million different groups. Only the first demonstrates any power and makes any change more likely to happen.

While I caucused for Sen. Sanders in my state, I rapidly soured on him as the primary season went on. I first rationalised it the way PUMAs did in 2008 (though I did not have the right to vote then due to emerging from homelessness) when I supported Barack Obama. As the primaries continued toward California and it became mathematically impossible for Sanders to win, I was over him still pushing the issue.

I would be all in favour of the California Primary being held at the front of the pack rather than last. California as such a large and populous state would have the benefit of primary candidates campaigning there first, and knocking out weak candidates right away.

And can anybody explain how Cohen paying for the NDA is not an illegal campaign contribution? The only way it’s not illegal is if Trump paid for it personally, not through the Trump Org. In trying to insulate trump from the NDA payment Cohen has put both of them into a campaign finance law trap. And if Cohen didn’t file an IRS Form 709 for tax year 2016 listing the payment and either paid the gift tax or applied it against his lifetime estate exemption then he’s committed tax fraud.

Cohen has painted himself into a corner and the paint is flaming napalm.

Actually, Bob does have something of a point here - and so, for that matter, does Sen. Sanders: but by way of commentary:

1. Fuck Bernie Sanders. Vigorously. The guy is NOT a Democrat, and his endorsement/lack-of shouldn’t carry any more weight than any other “celebrity”, Senator or no.

2. That said, I can’t see why support for Diane Feinstein ought to be some sort of Democratic touchstone for the midterms: she’s 84 years old, been in the Senate forever, and except for the issue of seniority, it’s hard to see where her retirement (see point 3) would be some sort of disaster.

3. This is California: one of the bluest states in the Union: if DiFi were to bow out (hopefully “gracefully”, and hopefully work to elect a Democratic successor) what are the chances of the Republicans grabbing the seat anyway? Their bench in CA is godawfully thin, and unpopular statewide: TBH, the Dem bullpen isn’t that fantastic either, but still an improvement over the GOP.

4. And just to be clear, see point 1). Again.

The payments out of the Trump org (which added up to one dollar short of $130K) and then the subsequent transfer of money to Says Who (complete with email notification) just might square that circle.

These guys think they’re NY mobsters. But any of the heads of the Five Families would have known to just keep their heads down and take care of business.
