British PM Theresa May: “Highly Likely” Russia Is Responsible for Spy’s Poisoning

Very disturbing news this morning from Britain, where Prime Minister Theresa May has just announced it’s “highly likely” Russia is responsible for the poisoning of ex-Russian spy Sergei Skripal earlier this month — with a deadly military-grade nerve agent.

LONDON — Prime Minister Theresa May said Monday that British investigators had concluded it was “highly likely” that Russia was responsible for the poison attack that left a Russian double agent and his daughter comatose on a park bench last week.

The British leader said the police had identified the poison as a “military-grade nerve agent of a type developed by Russia.”

She warned that Russia has either engaged in a direct attack against Britain or has lost control of the nerve agent it developed.

Skripal and his daughter were discovered in a comatose state in the British city of Salisbury, on a bench near a shopping center, and 21 other people have now been treated for symptoms of nerve agent poisoning.

Russia is responding as expected:

So far, not a word about it from our so-called president.

And I forgot to add, kick Russia out of SWIFT; expelling Russian banks from SWIFT would potentially deny Russia access to billions of dollars in revenue and spending using SWIFT, though it wouldn’t prevent them from using informal value transfer systems.

But it’d certainly be one hell of a kick right in the nads of Russia’s financial system.

What’s most likely is the White House will insist that we cannot act against Russia until we’ve “all the facts,” which we won’t have until we capture “those responsible.” The idea being that without the assassins arrested or dead, we can’t be sure that this wasn’t planned by some shadowy group to “frame” the Russians.

Indeed; me also too, besides, more or less. I was at prep school nearby and a solicitous but tedious aunt used to take me to the cathedral, up with which I put on account of the subsequent cream tea. Deep roots, long-term planning. I await the knock on my door with trepidation.

This is my mother’s district. Since she is not on the Internet, I will be calling her to support her rep (Quigley) against this chowderhead trying to primary him (Wolf).

Wolf, facing accusations of stolen valour (a subject that really incenses my veteran mother), said in defence “the DOD and veterans do not have a copyright on the term ‘service’.”

He claimed to work as an FBI special agent (forcing the FBI to say no, he didn’t do that as a special agent), and claimed combat tours in Iraq (no, he wasn’t in the military).

And yes, he is accused of abuse and is banned from a couple universities in Chicago. It is alleged he also owns an AR-15 (banned in the city).

This guy sounds more like a Republican trying to fly under the radar to primary Rep. Quigley.

If you live in IL-5, take a look.

Second thing:

The $130,000 repayment offer by Ms. Daniels is a brilliant PR checkmate.

a) If Trump takes the money (or one of his surrogates), that ends any NDA they might have had (and tanks the threats of a suit against her and CBS).

b) If Trump denies there is an NDA and therefore he won’t take the money, he just cancelled any NDA which might be in force (by denying it) and she is free to say whatever she wants as long as it is not slander.

c) If Trump proceeds with the threatened lawsuits, then Stormy Daniels gets discovery and also can present evidence in a very public suit.

This has the potential of dividing off Christians who support Trump (deeming him a hypocrite) and the GOP in general. Stormy Daniels is an accomplished businesswoman already, and is familiar with conservative politics (when she ran for office against David Vitter but withdrew when someone blew up her campaign manager’s car).

She is fully aware of how hypocritical and dangerous conservatism really is (based on her political campaign). This $130,000 offer is brilliant. There is no answer Trump or his lawyers can give that doesn’t admit the existence of the NDA (and therefore he was in fact cheating on his wife).

The crazification factor of conservatives you find in any country will not abandon him. Those who voted for “something different” or the “outsider politician who understands my troubles” will be reconsidering their choices.

Moreover, the longer this drags on, the closer the mid-terms get. This is not a good look for any GOP candidate attached to Trump at the hip.

Consolidation is something that has been happening across the economy, not just on the consumer side but on the wholesale and production side as well. At some point, those chickens are going to come home to roost, and things will not go well.

When I did research into the two separatist groups in California (based on an Alternet article), I found right away one was funded by a libertarian who hates taxes and the other by a fellow in Siberia.

When I called it out on Alternet, I kid you not I was called an “imperialist and oligarchy apologist.” That got a metric fuctonne of upvotes by the commentaritat of Alternet.

Pretty much the last time I commented there.

In the meantime, I informed my sister (who lives in Burbank) of what I found, and she was already aware of it and was fighting for the NO side of Yes! California and California Yes (the two groups).

Perhaps, but they put a lot more money and effort into the Texas movement since it was already established (if comical) and had a far more receptive audience. At one point, fully half the Texas GOP county committees endorsed at least a vote on secession.

Ok, going through these points:

a. It’s not much of a PR coup, Trump’s supporters aren’t going to leave him, he’s bottomed out. My point was more that, PR issues aside, if she’s seeking to have the agreement voided, she would have to give back any money paid (there would also be the legal question of why she (and her attorney) accepted the payment without Trump’s signature).

b. The point of the agreement, from Trump’s view is to prevent her from making such films or books involving stories of him or characters based on him. So from their view, seeking to have the agreement nullified for those reasons would be legally improper.

c. Legally speaking, it doesn’t matter why they made the agreement, the question is whether the agreement is legally valid. Politically speaking, as I said in a. it doesn’t really matter because Trump’s not going to lose anymore support, he’s hit his crazification factor.

d. No disagreement there.

e. Never suggested she went bankrupt or was a bad businessperson. Again, though, those points are irrelevant to the specific legal issue: whether the contract, based on the writing and actions of the parties, is valid. That she is a former porn star turned director and producer and that he is the worst president in American history mean nothing to the legal analysis.

But for a man with 40 years in the public eye, and who repeatedly demonstrated on the campaign trail that he is a genuinely terrible person, it doesn’t really matter. All of that is baked into the public perception of him. And as I said above, he’s not losing his base unless or until he nominates the in house counsel of NARAL or Planned Parenthood to the Supreme Court.

All valid questions. One’s which will likely be answered in discovery. Any email/letter that Cohen sent to Daniels’ attorney will have to be produced. As will any documents regarding negotiations and pre-final drafts of the agreement, and probably the documents that Daniels was required to return as part of the agreement. It’s a fascinating case from a purely technical contracts law point of view. And I was mostly trying to lay out what I presume will be their primary defenses.

a. It’s not much of a PR coup, Trump’s supporters aren’t going to leave him, he’s bottomed out. My point was more that, PR issues aside, if she’s seeking to have the agreement voided, she would have to give back any money paid (there would also be the legal question of why she (and her attorney) accepted the payment without Trump’s signature).

It’s a PR coup because she offered to return the money. Trump either has to say there was no agreement (in such case she is free to say anything she wishes as long as it’s not slander), or take the money (which negates the agreement and still allows her to say what she wishes), or sue her (which with upcoming elections would electrify the media and force GOP politicians to take a stand on the issue.

b. The point of the agreement, from Trump’s view is to prevent her from making such films or books involving stories of him or characters based on him. So from their view, seeking to have the agreement nullified for those reasons would be legally improper.

And to do that, he would have to a) admit there was an agreement and b) sue her.

c. Legally speaking, it doesn’t matter why they made the agreement, the question is whether the agreement is legally valid. Politically speaking, as I said in a. it doesn’t really matter because Trump’s not going to lose anymore support, he’s hit his crazification factor.

Good luck to the candidates that tied their political stars to Trump. Every one of them is going to be asked about this.

d. No disagreement there.

e. Never suggested she went bankrupt or was a bad businessperson. Again, though, those points are irrelevant to the specific legal issue: whether the contract, based on the writing and actions of the parties, is valid. That she is a former porn star turned director and producer and that he is the worst president in American history mean nothing to the legal analysis.

And that’s why it’s a PR checkmate. If he chooses to challenge it in court, he admits he made an NDA with a porn actress during the campaign. The Keyes Constant argues that a certain percentage of people will pull the lever for (R) Beelzebub. Those aren’t the voters Democrats are trying to peel off. It’s the alleged fence-sitters and moderates.

He can’t be a third party though because the Agreement lists the location of arbitration occurring at DD’s personal election and lists claims that DD releases as part of the completed contract. It also says “DD warrants and represents” that he won’t go after PP for any disclosures made to others prior to the date of the agreement. The whole thing was very explicitly drawn up with him as an intended party.

Okay. I don’t live in the area but my belief is it has to do with cultural issues dominating the parties and the GOP knowing how to push the buttons of resentment. It’s sad honestly since there are a lot of people there who are the children and grandchildren of immigrants. It amazes me really. My grandparents home in Johnstown went for Mondale and then went for Trump but back then there were more people with memories of life before the New Deal.

Not so much a Red Flag for nefarious activity, but basically just an indicator of haste & sloppiness.

That being said, my own experience with judges on the higher benches is that they can give you that look over their reading glasses when you bring some flimsy Settlement Agreement and General Release into their court, and try to insist that despite misspelling the name of the Plaintiff throughout, and getting the dates wrong by one year, that the document should still be enforceable.

There’s usually an embarassed moment of silence after you finish begging the court to overlook the now-clear fact that you’re a dumbass who really shouldn’t be practicing law. Papers shuffle. The bailiff stifles a belch. Somewhere off in the distance, you think, people are happy, going about their lives.

I think Deb touched on a bit of it when we were talking about our life around the steel factory days this morning. He mentioned going to school and getting to the Irish Catholic school which was near the German Catholic School (I hope I am remembering that correctly).

I am just about finished reading “Reckless” by Chrissie Hynde (Pretenders) and she mentioned living for a time in Cleveland and how aware you had to be of the neighborhoods and how you had to “fit” in or there would be trouble. That was the early 70s.

Being segmented into areas of only people like you doesn’t help anyone. You are suspicious from the get-go and you have nothing but your own people telling you how things are. Many old cities were like that.

Take away the jobs and that suspicion just goes crazy. It is always “them” that messed it up for “you.” And the politics of the right have played on that from the late 70s on with ReaganNomics. And it has only gotten worse to where Trump didn’t hide it. He sold it.

It’s really going to be a hell of a test to see where this all falls.

There’s usually an embarassed moment of silence after you finish begging the court to overlook the now-clear fact that you’re a dumbass who really shouldn’t be practicing law. Papers shuffle. The bailiff stifles a belch. Somewhere off in the distance, you think, people are happy, going about their lives.

I think Deb touched on a bit of it when we were talking about our life around the steel factory days this morning. He mentioned going to school and getting to the Irish Catholic school which was near the German Catholic School (I hope I am remembering that correctly).

I am just about finished reading “Reckless” by Chrissie Hynde (Pretenders) and she mentioned living for a time in Cleveland and how aware you had to be of the neighborhoods and how you had to “fit” in or there would be trouble. That was the early 70s.

Being segmented into areas of only people like you doesn’t help anyone. You are suspicious from the get-go and you have nothing but your own people telling you how things are. Many old cities were like that.

Take away the jobs and that suspicion just goes crazy. It is always “them” that messed it up for “you.” And the politics of the right have played on that from the late 70s on with ReaganNomics. And it has only gotten worse to where Trump didn’t hide it. He sold it.

It’s really going to be a hell of a test to see where this all falls.

Yep. I think fwiw my dad’s parents were more liberal minded since they lived all around the US, were multi ethnic- German and Irish funnily enough but also from different economic backgrounds too.

my own non lawyerly experience is when sigs need notarization, there’s a separate notary sig and stamp for each party signature they’re, well, acknowledging

In an executive order Monday night, President Trump said his administration has uncovered national security concerns in Broadcom’s hostile bid to take over Qualcomm, a deal that would have put one of America’s biggest mobile chipmakers in the hands of a company based in Singapore.

On the one hand, I’m always glad to see major mergers/acquisitions get stopped, especially hostile take overs. On the other, national security seems to be a strange argument on its face. Especially considering that Broadcom has headquarters in California along with Singapore and it’s history can be traced back to being a division of HP. It’s not like this company is a national company of Singapore, it’s actually a publicly traded company on the Nasdaq.

If a notary was required for the agreement and the notary didn’t sign it, the agreement is invalid on its face (forget all the other legal wrangling).

It also shows there is an agreement if Texas is investigating it (thereby torpedoing Trump’s and Cohen’s claims there was no such agreement).

I am really glad this is “stupid Watergate,” as a competent crook wouldn’t have been caught in any of this.

Unless the law has changed recently, just because a notary doesn’t sign a contract does not make it invalid in Texas. (Source: me. I graduated from a Texas law school and actually passed the bar back in B.C., before computer.)

I would like to suggest a different way to look at it. This, plus the lack of Trump’s signature, the way the money was paid, and whatever else comes up could all be factors in the invalidity of the agreement. Or (and this would amuse me greatly), perhaps the agreement is void on its face as contrary to public policy.

Oh, and by the way, just because you break a contract doesn’t mean the world ends. The first thing I learned in contracts lo all these years ago was remedies, which was a backdoor way of getting us to learn “what is a contract?” It was quite clever. We learned from day 1 that contracts aren’t inviolable or sacrosanct.

My first year Property professor once told us to think of cases as stories, and that all stories start with someone making a bad decision. What I figured out very quickly in Contracts was that every case was because someone didn’t do what they were supposed to do under the contract, which turns out, happens a lot.

Officials in Texas are investigating the nondisclosure agreement signed by adult-film actress Stormy Daniels after it was revealed that the notary did not sign or date the document, the Dallas Morning News reported Monday.

Texas notaries are required to sign and date agreements, as well as provide a certificate verifying those who sign documents.

However, notary Erica Jackson is now facing an investigation after she failed to do all three for the 2016 nondisclosure agreement regarding Daniels’s alleged affair with President Trump. Jackson’s stamp is on the document.

“Attaching your seal to a document without a notarial certificate constitutes good cause for the secretary of state to take action against your notary commission,” a Texas official said in a letter to Jackson, sent last week.

They don’t tell you most STEM positions want a masters or at the very least, several types of difficult to obtain and expensive certifications.

Worked at McDonald’s for years and retail. One of my dads coworkers from the factory gave me shit for working at McDonald’s with duo bachelors. I gave him some shit at the counter.

Working human services full time requires a minimum bachelors. The salary has barely any give, and pays mileage but use personal vehicles for the largest county in N.Y.

With this latest depature from reality in our GOP I think the evidence is now quite clear we are in the midst of a coup d’etat against democracy itself. I know this is probably more trouble than you two would want to go through, but I would really recommend looking at a defense contractor if you are able (even if every day I have to prevent gagging myself because I’m following rules the President has decided he doesn’t need to). By law, they are required to make sure they are not discriminating by gender, age, race, or sexual orientation, and mine, L3, does a good job (the president of one division is African American, my division leader is a woman, and her boss is a woman, etc.). I know in my area - edge of DFW - we are still looking for programmers.

What happened in 2016 was a failure of too many people to see that our only real leverage is elections. The necessity to vote, and to vote for those who will get you closer to your goals.

Not necessarily. At a minimum, there may be state-level violations that NY is already aware of, but holding back at Mueller’s request. Also, if you were a career FBI guy who has just spent a year and lots of money with lots of associates on a case, do you think you’d just throw in the towel? I dont know what the counter-play is, but I would be quite surprised if there wasn’t one.

Betsy DeVos has an agenda, and that agenda is to declare public schools as all being failures and to create charter schools funded by public tax money but that are run by private corporations. She isn’t the least bit interested in public schools, but she is interested in the billions in public funding she can funnel to her buddies in the corporate world.
