British PM Theresa May: “Highly Likely” Russia Is Responsible for Spy’s Poisoning

World • Views: 51,112

Very disturbing news this morning from Britain, where Prime Minister Theresa May has just announced it’s “highly likely” Russia is responsible for the poisoning of ex-Russian spy Sergei Skripal earlier this month — with a deadly military-grade nerve agent.

LONDON — Prime Minister Theresa May said Monday that British investigators had concluded it was “highly likely” that Russia was responsible for the poison attack that left a Russian double agent and his daughter comatose on a park bench last week.

The British leader said the police had identified the poison as a “military-grade nerve agent of a type developed by Russia.”

She warned that Russia has either engaged in a direct attack against Britain or has lost control of the nerve agent it developed.

Skripal and his daughter were discovered in a comatose state in the British city of Salisbury, on a bench near a shopping center, and 21 other people have now been treated for symptoms of nerve agent poisoning.

Russia is responding as expected:

So far, not a word about it from our so-called president.

No doubt Fox, Limbaugh, Infowars, Greenwald and the rest of the usual suspects have their marching orders from the Kremlin: We shall see a massive propaganda push against HM government and the UK generally.

In a sane world, the US president would make a statement of solidarity with the UK and push Russia for answers or (failing that) suggest taking the matter to the UN.

This administration? Some excuse-making about “not jumping to conclusions,” vague promises of “support” for our ally, and no serious suggestion of taking the matter further than empty words.

We pretty much know that Trump won’t do much about Putin. How about that law and order, tough-on-Russia Republican party and their leaders like Ryan and McConnell?

Will they show some spine and stand up and address this, or will they hide behind Trump’s fat ass and claim it is up to Trump how he wants to handle foreign affairs?

And I forgot to add, kick Russia out of SWIFT; expelling Russian banks from SWIFT would potentially deny Russia access to billions of dollars in revenue and spending using SWIFT, though it wouldn’t prevent them from using informal value transfer systems.

But it’d certainly be one hell of a kick right in the nads of Russia’s financial system.

What’s most likely is the White House will insist that we cannot act against Russia until we’ve “all the facts,” which we won’t have until we capture “those responsible.” The idea being that without the assassins arrested or dead, we can’t be sure that this wasn’t planned by some shadowy group to “frame” the Russians.

I remember a fluff report a couple of years ago on the super-expensive neighborhood of Belgravia. It had been virtually taken over by foreigners. The reporter talked to a Colombian woman who was out walking her dogs. She said it was nice, but hinted there might be problems. When pressed, she said she couldn’t say more because she was “afraid of the Russians around the corner.” My reaction was that if you live in the most expensive neighborhood in the world and you are afraid of the neighbors, IT IS TIME TO MOVE.

It’s never been more clear that this modified-from-Ghostbusters scene needs to happen:

Pence: “Hey, Robert Muller!”

Trump: “I trust you are moving my staff to better quarters in the White House…”

Muller: “No, you are being moved out of the white house. With this Grand Jury indictment, congress has voted to terminate your presidency. You are to vacate these premises immediately.”

Trump: “This is preposterous. I demand an explanation.”

Muller: “This country will no longer continue any funding of any kind for your gang’s activities.”

Trump: “But the 4Chan kids love us.”

Muller: “‘President’ Trump… We believe that the purpose of government is to serve Americans. You however, seem to regard government as some kind of dodge… or hustle. Your policies are the worst kind of populist tripe, your speeches are sloppy, and your decisions are highly questionable! You are a poor President, Mr. Trump!”

Kinda like claiming frame up when (1) You have motive (2) You have the ability (3) you have sole possession of the unique weapon involved. (4) the US President in your pocket.

Trump is more likely to come out for an assault weapon ban than stand tall with PM May. We need resolute, we have bought and paid for.

Two things:

Midterm Madness: Illinois 5th and the Lying Lady-Punching Douchebag (Wonkette)

This is my mother’s district. Since she is not on the Internet, I will be calling her to support her rep (Quigley) against this chowderhead trying to primary him (Wolf).

Wolf, facing accusations of stolen valour (a subject that really incenses my veteran mother), said in defence “the DOD and veterans do not have a copyright on the term ‘service’.”

He claimed to work as an FBI special agent (forcing the FBI to say no, he didn’t do that as a special agent), and claimed combat tours in Iraq (no, he wasn’t in the military).

And yes, he is accused of abuse and is banned from a couple universities in Chicago. It is alleged he also owns an AR-15 (banned in the city).

This guy sounds more like a Republican trying to fly under the radar to primary Rep. Quigley.

If you live in IL-5, take a look.

Second thing:

The $130,000 repayment offer by Ms. Daniels is a brilliant PR checkmate.

a) If Trump takes the money (or one of his surrogates), that ends any NDA they might have had (and tanks the threats of a suit against her and CBS).

b) If Trump denies there is an NDA and therefore he won’t take the money, he just cancelled any NDA which might be in force (by denying it) and she is free to say whatever she wants as long as it is not slander.

c) If Trump proceeds with the threatened lawsuits, then Stormy Daniels gets discovery and also can present evidence in a very public suit.

This has the potential of dividing off Christians who support Trump (deeming him a hypocrite) and the GOP in general. Stormy Daniels is an accomplished businesswoman already, and is familiar with conservative politics (when she ran for office against David Vitter but withdrew when someone blew up her campaign manager’s car).

She is fully aware of how hypocritical and dangerous conservatism really is (based on her political campaign). This $130,000 offer is brilliant. There is no answer Trump or his lawyers can give that doesn’t admit the existence of the NDA (and therefore he was in fact cheating on his wife).

The crazification factor of conservatives you find in any country will not abandon him. Those who voted for “something different” or the “outsider politician who understands my troubles” will be reconsidering their choices.

Moreover, the longer this drags on, the closer the mid-terms get. This is not a good look for any GOP candidate attached to Trump at the hip.

Going to be real hard to wage an insurgency when the first act of Congress will be to ban the sale of guns and ammo. Also going to be really difficult when people opposed to your insurgency start reporting you to authorities and said authorities start going house to house clearing out weapons caches.

And that’s before the Abrams tanks start knocking down the buildings you’re holed up in.

Shocking that Trump decided to move forward with tariffs (so people will “buy America steel!”) while understanding nothing of the current market forces:

“What people don’t understand about the steels I use is it doesn’t have anything to do with price. I’ve tried to find domestic sources,” he said. ” … I’m not importing it because of price. I’m importing it because of quality and (because) I can get it.”

Scheurich said he has to buy from foreign companies because decades of consolidation in the domestic steel industry have left few U.S. mills producing the high-quality steel he requires. The limited amount of American steel he can obtain too often has obvious flaws, he said.

Consolidation is something that has been happening across the economy, not just on the consumer side but on the wholesale and production side as well. At some point, those chickens are going to come home to roost, and things will not go well.

The leader of Iowa’s Senate is stepping down Monday after a video of him appearing to kiss a statehouse lobbyist surfaced, according to the Associated Press.

When I did research into the two separatist groups in California (based on an Alternet article), I found right away one was funded by a libertarian who hates taxes and the other by a fellow in Siberia.

When I called it out on Alternet, I kid you not I was called an “imperialist and oligarchy apologist.” That got a metric fuctonne of upvotes by the commentaritat of Alternet.

Pretty much the last time I commented there.

In the meantime, I informed my sister (who lives in Burbank) of what I found, and she was already aware of it and was fighting for the NO side of Yes! California and California Yes (the two groups).

The chances of a small number of fat white guys being able to successfully counter tanks, planes and helicopters with their precious AR-15s is as laughable as the poles charging german tanks on horse back in WWII. It’s just not. gonna. work. I would be laughing as a tank commander as I gave the order to load a canister round while they charged my tank.

Another thing they’ve convinced themselves of… is that everyone in the military driving those tanks, piloting those drones/jets etc. would come over to their side.

Shame about Alternet. They have been known to have some good stuff (back awhile, I was published there, and happy to be) but apparently have fallen into the nasty vortex of paranoia.

Alternet has been going downhill for a long time.

Today at least they have interesting articles: Calling Bernie Sanders’s version of democratic socialism a sham, calling out the DOD on a dodgy relationship with a company they contracted drones with, a Parkland student mocking Betsy DeVos claiming it’s unfair to ask education questions (of the Education Secretary), &c.

It’s not so much that Alternet is the problem, it’s their regular commentators. Too many purity ponies and not enough pragmatists.

I have a village board meeting tonight:

The $130,000 repayment offer by Ms. Daniels is a brilliant PR checkmate.

If she is seeking to have the contract declared void (and that seems to be the remedy she’s seeking from my quick read of the complaint) then any such ruling would have to include an order for repayment of the money. More likely, the argument that the defendants would make is that she’s trying to get out of the contract because she think she can make more by writing a book, producing a parody adult film (ew), or giving interviews. They’ll try to argue that the agreement was valid because even though Trump (or whomever) didn’t sign the document, the parties substantially performed all their duties under the agreement and thus there’s no reason to rule that the contract is void.

In the last election, exit polling showed the majority of the active duty military voted for Hillary Clinton and Gary Johnson (combined) over Donald Trump.

1. The whole thing will start out with the few “patriots” who immediately take up arms against the “tyrannical gov’t.”

2. Public sentiment will rapidly swing in their favor and against the “tyrannical gov’t,” because “the people” will see that their cause is just and honorable.

3. This swing will convince the Armed Forces that the “tyrannical gov’t” needs to go and spark a widespread mutiny, with any who don’t immediately join the “patriot” cause being subject to future “war crimes” tribunals.

4. With the Armed Forces now led by these “patriots,” a swift coup will remove the “tyrannical gov’t” from power and install one in total compliance with the “true wishes” of the Founding Fathers. They’ll have to postpone elections for a bit (you know) because they’ll need to time to root out all those politicians who won’t take a loyalty pledge to these “New Founding Fathers.”

b) what’s wrong with producing or staring in a parody adult film? I have no problems with women doing legal things with their own bodies (just as men do with weekly bruises and contusions in the NFL) for pay, or writing a book for pay (that’s what all writers do).

c) They can argue all they want that the agreement was completed. That means there was an agreement. Why would a politician need an agreement with an adult film actress at all unless that politician was trying to cover up his association with her?

d) I have no issues with women who wish to go into that industry, provided it is a freely entered contract. Porn is one of the few jobs where women earn more money than men.

e) Ms. Daniels never went bankrupt. She is a successful business woman. (There are women porn stars in Mensa. Porn is not equal to stupid.)

f) I didn’t hide my own job as an editor of erotic Romance novels when I ran for office. I figured I would stand or fall on the issues, not my legal employment. One of the books I edited is in our public library, signed by me as the editor of the book. Far-Right Erupts As ‘Alt-Lite’ Activists Prevented From Entering UK

Two far-right activists were detained and deported when they attempted to enter the United Kingdom this weekend, triggering outrage among right-wing media personalities in the U.S. and Europe.

On Friday, far-right YouTube vlogger Brittany Pettibone and her boyfriend, Austrian “Identitarian” activist Martin Sellner, were detained by United Kingdom border police for three days, after which they were deported back to Austria. Pettibone frequently affiliates with right-wing extremists and has earned a spot in the hearts and minds of alt-right activists by flirting with white nationalism, such as the idea that it’s “our fault” if white people become a minority race. She also used to co-host a podcast with the explicitly alt-right personality Tara McCarthy.

Ok, going through these points:

a. It’s not much of a PR coup, Trump’s supporters aren’t going to leave him, he’s bottomed out. My point was more that, PR issues aside, if she’s seeking to have the agreement voided, she would have to give back any money paid (there would also be the legal question of why she (and her attorney) accepted the payment without Trump’s signature).

b. The point of the agreement, from Trump’s view is to prevent her from making such films or books involving stories of him or characters based on him. So from their view, seeking to have the agreement nullified for those reasons would be legally improper.

c. Legally speaking, it doesn’t matter why they made the agreement, the question is whether the agreement is legally valid. Politically speaking, as I said in a. it doesn’t really matter because Trump’s not going to lose anymore support, he’s hit his crazification factor.

d. No disagreement there.

e. Never suggested she went bankrupt or was a bad businessperson. Again, though, those points are irrelevant to the specific legal issue: whether the contract, based on the writing and actions of the parties, is valid. That she is a former porn star turned director and producer and that he is the worst president in American history mean nothing to the legal analysis.

f. I assume this goes to Trump trying to hide his relationship with a porn star. He made a poor tactical decision, in essence he fell victim to the honey pot. That is a sign of his (and his attorney’s) stupidity and moral bankruptcy. But for a man with 40 years in the public eye, and who repeatedly demonstrated on the campaign trail that he is a genuinely terrible person, it doesn’t really matter. All of that is baked into the public perception of him. And as I said above, he’s not losing his base unless or until he nominates the in house counsel of NARAL or Planned Parenthood to the Supreme Court.

I notice that not only did Trump not sign the Agreement, but that Cohen crossed out DD in his “Attorney for” signature and wrote in Essential Consultants LLC. Additionally the other “Attorney for DD” line was left unsigned. So since Cohen and Trump’s claim is that the work was done without Trump’s involvement and Cohen paid for the agreement out of pocket then what duties did he perform exactly? And if he didn’t perform any duties, didn’t sign the document and no attorney working officially on his behalf signed the document then is he technically even a party to the Agreement at all?

All valid questions. One’s which will likely be answered in discovery. Any email/letter that Cohen sent to Daniels’ attorney will have to be produced. As will any documents regarding negotiations and pre-final drafts of the agreement, and probably the documents that Daniels was required to return as part of the agreement. It’s a fascinating case from a purely technical contracts law point of view. And I was mostly trying to lay out what I presume will be their primary defenses.

re: #133 KGxvi

Ok, going through these points:

a. It’s not much of a PR coup, Trump’s supporters aren’t going to leave him, he’s bottomed out. My point was more that, PR issues aside, if she’s seeking to have the agreement voided, she would have to give back any money paid (there would also be the legal question of why she (and her attorney) accepted the payment without Trump’s signature).

It’s a PR coup because she offered to return the money. Trump either has to say there was no agreement (in such case she is free to say anything she wishes as long as it’s not slander), or take the money (which negates the agreement and still allows her to say what she wishes), or sue her (which with upcoming elections would electrify the media and force GOP politicians to take a stand on the issue.

b. The point of the agreement, from Trump’s view is to prevent her from making such films or books involving stories of him or characters based on him. So from their view, seeking to have the agreement nullified for those reasons would be legally improper.

And to do that, he would have to a) admit there was an agreement and b) sue her.

c. Legally speaking, it doesn’t matter why they made the agreement, the question is whether the agreement is legally valid. Politically speaking, as I said in a. it doesn’t really matter because Trump’s not going to lose anymore support, he’s hit his crazification factor.

Good luck to the candidates that tied their political stars to Trump. Every one of them is going to be asked about this.

And that’s why it’s a PR checkmate. If he chooses to challenge it in court, he admits he made an NDA with a porn actress during the campaign. The Keyes Constant argues that a certain percentage of people will pull the lever for (R) Beelzebub. Those aren’t the voters Democrats are trying to peel off. It’s the alleged fence-sitters and moderates.

Even when Nixon left office, polling showed he had a base of support that would not abandon him if he personally nailed Jesus to the cross.

There is a certain amount of crazy conservative baked into every democratic republic. They are the minority. His base does not matter. Every Republican politician who is wedded to Donald Trump can be called out as hypocrites. The point is not to move his base, it is to move the squishy middle voters or independents or non-voters.

He can’t be a third party though because the Agreement lists the location of arbitration occurring at DD’s personal election and lists claims that DD releases as part of the completed contract. It also says “DD warrants and represents” that he won’t go after PP for any disclosures made to others prior to the date of the agreement. The whole thing was very explicitly drawn up with him as an intended party.

The NRA says jump and Trump and GOP ask how high. They are on such a tight leash that the NRA yanked the moment there was a proposal that might reduce gun sales. That’s why the entire Trump/GOP focus is on stuff that will increase gun sales - arming teachers, instead of doing things that might make everyone safer with fewer guns sold to the wrong people - underage, criminals, those with domestic violence or mental health issues.

That’s an interesting wrinkle.

If a notary was required for the agreement and the notary didn’t sign it, the agreement is invalid on its face (forget all the other legal wrangling).

It also shows there is an agreement if Texas is investigating it (thereby torpedoing Trump’s and Cohen’s claims there was no such agreement).

Not signing it could just be an oversight. Not signing it and not recording the transaction is suspicious. Pretty much my thinking.

I think Deb touched on a bit of it when we were talking about our life around the steel factory days this morning. He mentioned going to school and getting to the Irish Catholic school which was near the German Catholic School (I hope I am remembering that correctly).

I am just about finished reading “Reckless” by Chrissie Hynde (Pretenders) and she mentioned living for a time in Cleveland and how aware you had to be of the neighborhoods and how you had to “fit” in or there would be trouble. That was the early 70s.

Being segmented into areas of only people like you doesn’t help anyone. You are suspicious from the get-go and you have nothing but your own people telling you how things are. Many old cities were like that.

Take away the jobs and that suspicion just goes crazy. It is always “them” that messed it up for “you.” And the politics of the right have played on that from the late 70s on with ReaganNomics. And it has only gotten worse to where Trump didn’t hide it. He sold it.

It’s really going to be a hell of a test to see where this all falls.

Actually the notary did this twice, once for the NDA itself where two signature lines were left blank and once for the side letter agreement where just DD’s signature line was left blank. Both times the notary failed to sign and presumably both times failed to record the notarization.

That being said, my own experience with judges on the higher benches is that they can give you that look over their reading glasses when you bring some flimsy Settlement Agreement and General Release into their court, and try to insist that despite misspelling the name of the Plaintiff throughout, and getting the dates wrong by one year, that the document should still be enforceable.

The Christians that would be bothered by Stormy already do not support him, though. It drives me nuts to see people support him for any reason but those who claim this belief should not even do anything other than pray for his conviction and imprisonment.

That was on display on Friday on Bill Maher, where the oleaginous Erick Erickson was on full display, virtue-signaling like crazy to the people who he used to call his comrades in arms.

The narrow-minded, resentful, ignorant Christians have flung loose all pretense of actually worshipping Jesus to instead worship a loathsome pervert.

re: #206 ObserverArt

Yep. I think fwiw my dad’s parents were more liberal minded since they lived all around the US, were multi ethnic- German and Irish funnily enough but also from different economic backgrounds too.

Actually the notary did this twice, once for the NDA itself where two signature lines were left blank and once for the side letter agreement where just DD’s signature line was left blank. Both times the notary failed to sign and presumably both times failed to record the notarization.

my own non lawyerly experience is when sigs need notarization, there’s a separate notary sig and stamp for each party signature they’re, well, acknowledging

In an executive order Monday night, President Trump said his administration has uncovered national security concerns in Broadcom’s hostile bid to take over Qualcomm, a deal that would have put one of America’s biggest mobile chipmakers in the hands of a company based in Singapore.

On the one hand, I’m always glad to see major mergers/acquisitions get stopped, especially hostile take overs. On the other, national security seems to be a strange argument on its face. Especially considering that Broadcom has headquarters in California along with Singapore and it’s history can be traced back to being a division of HP. It’s not like this company is a national company of Singapore, it’s actually a publicly traded company on the Nasdaq.

re: #186 Anymouse 🌹

That’s an interesting wrinkle.

If a notary was required for the agreement and the notary didn’t sign it, the agreement is invalid on its face (forget all the other legal wrangling).

It also shows there is an agreement if Texas is investigating it (thereby torpedoing Trump’s and Cohen’s claims there was no such agreement).

I am really glad this is “stupid Watergate,” as a competent crook wouldn’t have been caught in any of this.

Unless the law has changed recently, just because a notary doesn’t sign a contract does not make it invalid in Texas. (Source: me. I graduated from a Texas law school and actually passed the bar back in B.C., before computer.)

I would like to suggest a different way to look at it. This, plus the lack of Trump’s signature, the way the money was paid, and whatever else comes up could all be factors in the invalidity of the agreement. Or (and this would amuse me greatly), perhaps the agreement is void on its face as contrary to public policy.

Oh, and by the way, just because you break a contract doesn’t mean the world ends. The first thing I learned in contracts lo all these years ago was remedies, which was a backdoor way of getting us to learn “what is a contract?” It was quite clever. We learned from day 1 that contracts aren’t inviolable or sacrosanct.

We learned from day 1 that contracts aren’t inviolable or sacrosanct.

My first year Property professor once told us to think of cases as stories, and that all stories start with someone making a bad decision. What I figured out very quickly in Contracts was that every case was because someone didn’t do what they were supposed to do under the contract, which turns out, happens a lot.

Otherwise, my first year Contracts experience went something like this:

Professor: Mr. G, what is the rule from this case?
Me: [reads rule directly from case book]
Professor: Nah [states the exact opposite]

Who knows how damaging she will be, if she’s damaging at all. This is like the Mueller investigation, lots of talk but nothing that goes directly to Trump.

I’m wondering, once again, if we all aren’t getting played.

First, we know very little about what Meuller actually has, and that’s a good thing.
Second, Daniels is a part of Trump’s story, a part where he cheats on his wife around the time she’s pregnant. Stay outraged at this type of stuff.
Finally, none of this is going to fix our country. That’s up to us. The time for waiting and hoping someone else will is over.

Sad as it is, I am inclined to agree with them on philosophy. As in, I no longer really see them as people either - at least, not as people you can engage with and speak to like other humans. There’s no point - we don’t share a reality. They’re just a number to be overcome.

I am aware this makes me a worse person.

Recognizing reality does not make you a worse person, far from it. These are evil people, they see any sign of respect or attempt at dialog as weakness.

From the Chicago Trib on the massive hypocrisy of the evangelicals.

Now consider how evangelicals reacted to President Bill Clinton’s extramarital relationship with Monica Lewinsky.

James Dobson of Focus on the Family wrote in September 1998: “As it turns out, character DOES matter. You can’t run a family, let alone a country, without it. How foolish to believe that a person who lacks honesty and moral integrity is qualified to lead a nation and the world!”

Gary Bauer, head of the Family Research Council at the time, wrote: “The seamy facts under public discussion are shameful enough. But fascination with this story should not be allowed to obscure the deeper lesson these incidents impart. That lesson is this: Character counts — in a people, in the institutions of our society, and in our national leadership.”

And Richard Land, president of the Southern Baptist Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, said Clinton “has lost the moral authority and the trust necessary to govern. He has fallen below the threshold of what is necessary to be able to effectively serve in office.”

Texas investigating notary over failure to sign Stormy Daniels nondisclosure agreement: report

Officials in Texas are investigating the nondisclosure agreement signed by adult-film actress Stormy Daniels after it was revealed that the notary did not sign or date the document, the Dallas Morning News reported Monday.

Texas notaries are required to sign and date agreements, as well as provide a certificate verifying those who sign documents.

However, notary Erica Jackson is now facing an investigation after she failed to do all three for the 2016 nondisclosure agreement regarding Daniels’s alleged affair with President Trump. Jackson’s stamp is on the document.

“Attaching your seal to a document without a notarial certificate constitutes good cause for the secretary of state to take action against your notary commission,” a Texas official said in a letter to Jackson, sent last week.

Not entirely sure what to make of this:

On the one hand, I’m always glad to see major mergers/acquisitions get stopped, especially hostile take overs. On the other, national security seems to be a strange argument on its face. Especially considering that Broadcom has headquarters in California along with Singapore and it’s history can be traced back to being a division of HP. It’s not like this company is a national company of Singapore, it’s actually a publicly traded company on the Nasdaq.

Obviously, someone in Trumpland has a financial interest that will be impacted.
Or, there will be some very significant stock shenanigans taking place overnight.

With this latest depature from reality in our GOP I think the evidence is now quite clear we are in the midst of a coup d’etat against democracy itself. Republicans are now clearly siding with Russia in an effort to deligitimize the opposition party in America and are doing everything they can to institute less democracy, and create more Republic. Their design is to create a republic finally free from one man one vote and instead institute a formal one dollar one vote in its place.

Russia is merely happy to be creating as much chaos as possible throught democratic countries in general and are thrilled with the unbelievable success their operations have enjoyed the last few years. The 2018 elections may be the last we see of one man one vote. As they control a lock across the country in statewide offices look for open calls for a Constitutinal Convention from now mainstream Republicans in an effort to subvert every notion of federal power since 1800.

I think so too, otherwise disbanding the House Intel Committee investigation carries too much downside risk with no upside. With the House investigation still going Nunes can run interference, subpoena witnesses, selectively leak testimony and issue more bullshit memos. Shutting it down seems clearly to be a predicate maneuver intended to create the rationale for firing Rosenstein & Muelller that Nunes’ memo failed to provide.

If they manage to get away with firing Mueller, it’s pretty much over at that point, isn’t it? I know this is probably more trouble than you two would want to go through, but I would really recommend looking at a defense contractor if you are able (even if every day I have to prevent gagging myself because I’m following rules the President has decided he doesn’t need to). By law, they are required to make sure they are not discriminating by gender, age, race, or sexual orientation, and mine, L3, does a good job (the president of one division is African American, my division leader is a woman, and her boss is a woman, etc.). I know in my area - edge of DFW - we are still looking for programmers.

What happened in 2016 was a failure of too many people to see that our only real leverage is elections. The necessity to vote, and to vote for those who will get you closer to your goals.

What’s got the Republicans flopping is that people are realizing it. It’s one of the reasons House Republicans are trying to shut the investigation down.

Not necessarily. At a minimum, there may be state-level violations that NY is already aware of, but holding back at Mueller’s request. Also, if you were a career FBI guy who has just spent a year and lots of money with lots of associates on a case, do you think you’d just throw in the towel? I remember a fluff report a couple of years ago on the super-expensive neighborhood of Belgravia. It had been virtually taken over by foreigners. The reporter talked to a Colombian woman who was out walking her dogs. She said it was nice, but hinted there might be problems. When pressed, she said she couldn’t say more because she was “afraid of the Russians around the corner.” My reaction was that if you live in the most expensive neighborhood in the world and you are afraid of the neighbors, IT IS TIME TO MOVE.

I had to laugh at this. My guess is that the Colombians in this posh neighborhood didn’t get there by being thrifty campesinos and that if you asked the Russians around the corner about the problems, they’d probably say something like, “What bothers me is these drogista Colombians around the corner, they’ll kill you and your whole family if you complain about their dogs shitting on your lawn.”
