House Republicans Exonerate Figurehead

Politics • Views: 47,366

So. Donald Trump is crowing tonight, with caps-lock set on STUN, after the GOP-controlled House Intelligence Committee proclaims they have found no evidence of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.

Raise your hand if this shocks you in any way.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Lamb lost in a squeaker and the GOP has a meltup, I suppose you’d call it. I’d put money on it, because I’d be so happy if I lost the cash. Either way, it won’t be underblown. This making up words is fun.

He got over 60% of the vote last time, but he’s such an asshole that he is a target for state-wide intervention — people going door-to-door etc. Not at the top of the list for expelling, but not impossible. I think the electorate may be evolving some too.

I had the impression he is safe.

But then I found this bit at Ballotpedia. Primaries set for June 5th.

California’s 22nd Congressional District election, 2018

California’s 22nd Congressional District has been represented by a Republican since the 2002 elections. Heading into the 2018 election, the seat is held by House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes (R). As of January 22, 2018, a total of eight candidates have declared their intention to challenge Nunes for the seat, including six Democrats, one Libertarian, and one member of the American Solidarity Party.

Although Nunes won his 2016 election by a 35-point margin, Donald Trump (R) won the seat by less than 10 points. Political observers such as Bloomberg’s Francis Wilkinson have said that Nunes’ closeness with Trump, including his role in the House Intelligence Committee’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, could potentially make him vulernable in 2018.[4] A Public Policy Polling survey conducted in January 2018 on behalf of the campaign of attorney Andrew Janz (D) found Nunes leading a generic Democratic candidate 50-45

Race matters, HW, no matter how much we wish it wouldn’t. The right waged an intensive eight-year attack campaign against PBO by criticizing everything he did, from his choice in clothes to the type of mustard he ate. And all of it was accompanied by racism, and it paid off for them in 2016. They convinced millions of Americans that no POC belongs in the WH by making PBO “the other” and by using racist bullhorns, all while calling him the racist to cover up their own racism. That sh*t stuck in the heads of those who voted for Trump in 2016 because they really believe/d the GOP’s lies. Some are still blaming PBO for dividing the nation and promoting racism even though they see the Yam doing it nearly every time he opens his yap. Race matters in America, HW. If PBO had said the things the Yam has been saying, the GOP would have found some reason to impeach him. You and I know this. The lying and hypocrisy from the right is out of control and seems to be escalating. If it is beginning to backfire on them with some voters, it’s good for the nation and the world.

As much as I’d love to see that, I very much doubt Mueller would take this risk so soon. The GOP would go the extra mile for him, especially with all their recent losses.

I suspect Mueller will leave Nunes for the last round, when any attempt at shutting down the investigation would be futile.

The Trump maladministration is driving anyone with ethics out of government service.

“…Schwab told SFGate, “I quit because I didn’t want to perpetuate misleading facts.”

“I asked them to change the information,” he said. “I told them that the information was wrong, they asked me to deflect, and I didn’t agree with that. Then I took some time and I quit.” Schwab told CNN he’d “never” been in a situation “where someone asked me to deflect when we absolutely knew something was awry.”

“I just couldn’t bear the burden—continuing on as a representative of the agency and charged with upholding integrity, knowing that information was false,” Schwab said.

“It’s the job of a public affairs officer to offer transparency for the agency you work for.” he argued. “I felt like we weren’t doing that. I’ve never been in a situation when I’ve been asked to ignore the facts because it was more convenient. It was my first time being asked to do that.”

Exceptionally contentious board meeting tonight. The proposed proclamation did not materialise.

Contention was over street work (how much we’re going to spend on gravel, which streets get the work, the new six-year plan - which removed paving the street between my house and the church so the town could buy more gravel - I’m fine with that but the churchgoers aren’t) and the water meter project (friggin’ things are $6,000 each).

In accordance with FEMA and state disaster planning, the village was tasked with appointing and training a Public Information Officer. I moved over my Flag Committee chair and Sewer Superintendent hats to add another hat.

I was primarily picked as I can speak well in public, and I have an Internet connexion in my house (the prerequisite for the state course is an on-line FEMA course).

One of our HOA board members just took out a restraining order against his next door neighbors over a conflict that started with a dispute over a string of patio lights and recently went nuclear over an improperly planted palm tree.

HOAs are more dictatorial than representative. Given my druthers, I wouldn’t live in a house subject to an HOA (I rented one once in Va Beach - what a nightmare).

Our street project affects everyone (as everyone wants their streets fixed first). They’re not so big on paying for it though. (We have the money, the residents just don’t want to spend it, even though we put it in the budget at the fiscal year budget hearing last year that no one in town showed up for - now they’re complaining).

Some of our streets are getting to the point where they’re going to be impassible if they are not fixed (one already is and is so marked on official state maps). Comparatively gravel streets are much cheaper to maintain than pavement (and most of the town is opposed to paving the streets because that would take away from the “character” of our Old West village).

Like they banned people from smoking outdoors within the community, even on their own patios. Our board President and our lawyer found courts cases where condo & townhouse HOA’s in California got sued for absolutely outrageous amounts of money and lost because they refused to enact outdoor smoking bans. The smokers were pissed, and now they have to walk to the park which is like 50 yards away.

Note that Shitler makes the same crucial mistake as other ammosexual fantasists: Assuming that their intended victims are unarmed. He makes many others, for instance that his lard-ass oaf keepers have ninja-like powers of movement and concealment, but that is the big one. He proposes sending a vigilante brigade to block the Golden Gate bridge while other gangs go through the city shooting “libtards.” The gang on the bridge is somehow immune to sniping by local residents, as are the ones moving through the streets. In fact, there are a lot of guns in San Francisco; the oaf death squads would be exterminated in a matter of minutes even without military intervention. In contrast he believes his lardasses can eliminate tank columns by shooting the soldiers when they get out to take a leak, having followed the tanks around and taken up a perfect, impervious shooting position unnoticed.

They want to hate.

They don’t want the truth.

It’s a measure of their delusion, just as ammosexual gun churches think they represent “Christians.”
The oath keepers only claim 35 thousand members, meaning that they could probably muster, at most, a few hundred rifles in a real shit-hits-the-fan situation. The real hazard comes from ad hoc vigilante groups formed around fundamentalist church networks, especially in areas where these would have some support from local authorities. These might be able to get a pogrom started against vulnerable local populations, but even they would retreat to their armchairs to rant and rave as soon as the bolder ones got popped.

116
Shiplord Kirel, Friend of Moose and Squirrel  Mar 13, 2018 • 2:56:53am

I was always impressed with the gun nuts’ total lack of resistance when the New Orleans cops started illegally confiscating guns during Hurricane Katrina. Their “cold, dead fingers” shtick folded like a cheap tent. They had to get the hated ACLU to get their guns back. All hate, no cattle.

117
freetoken  Mar 13, 2018 • 3:28:47am

Another painful reality is that some of your old wingnut-meme-forwarding friends or relatives may have lost the ability to discriminate facts from fantasy.

Perhaps that is a problem with even some younger people, true.

But it is true that among the elderly there is a loss of the ability to form new memories and conduct critical analyses.

This is why elderly are targeted so often by scams.

Now, fear of becoming immobile, of being alone, and of death, also makes older people emotionally vulnerable.

In any case, it is easy for an older person to fall for a scam.

And that is what so much of the hate-right does with their hate-memes. They target not just the feeble minded or practiced bigots. No, they target the old who are easily manipulated for one reason or another.

This is among the many despicable traits of the wingnut hate-industry.

We are drowning in a sea of ignorance.
There is an RWNJ radio host in Lubbock who routinely refers to DeBlasio as “New York’s communist mayor” as though this were a fact, his stated affiliation, and not invective. Similarly Rush Limbaugh refers to non-RWNJ media as the “state-controlled media” defending this as metaphorical but knowing full well that many of his listeners will take it as literal fact. I met a Republican who believed the secret Walmart tunnel story because the source would be prosecuted for lying in print if it weren’t true. A Lubbockite has posted a meme of Mark Zuckerberg as a Nazi and complained about Facebook violating his constitutional right of free speech by restricting his account. On and on.

Labour MPs should not appear on Russia Today, says John McDonnell

John McDonnell has said Labour MPs should no longer appear on RT, formerly Russia Today, in the wake of the nerve agent attack on the former spy Sergei Skripal.

The shadow chancellor is one of a number of MPs, both Labour and Conservative, who have appeared on the Kremlin-funded channel in the past but on Sunday he said he would not do so again and would urge his party colleagues to follow suit.

The home secretary, Amber Rudd, has said it is too early to say who is responsible for the attack on Skripal and his daughter, Yulia, but with fingers pointing at the Kremlin, UK politicians are coming under increasing pressure to stand up to Russia.

Asked on the BBC’s The Andrew Marr Show whether one way of doing that was to stop appearing on RT, McDonnell said: “I think that’s right now and that’s what I’ll be doing … because what we’re seeing from Russia Today at times goes beyond objective journalism.”

We are learning more and more that Soviet communism was little more than a fig leaf for an oligarchy of thugs who succeeded in robbing the previous oligarchy.

I’ve always thought it was interesting that Trotsky’s assassin, Ramón Mercader, was welcomed as a hero in the Soviet Union after he finished his 20 year prison sentence in Mexico, despite the massive “de-Stalinization” campaign in the intervening years. KGB boss Alexander Shelepin gave him his Hero of the Soviet Union award in person. The elimination of Trotsky was still seen as a good thing among the Soviet leadership.

Good morning fellow lizards!

WP: Trump ousts Tillerson

President Trump has ousted Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and plans to nominate CIA Director Mike Pompeo to replace him as the nation’s top diplomat, orchestrating a major change to his national security team amid delicate negotiations with North Korea, White House officials said Tuesday.

Trump last Friday asked Tillerson to step aside, and the embattled diplomat cut short his trip to Africa on Monday to return to Washington.

Pompeo will replace him at the State Department, and Gina Haspel — the deputy director at the CIA — will succeed him at the CIA, becoming the first woman to run the spy agency, if confirmed.

In a statement issued to The Washington Post, Trump praised both Pompeo and Haspel.

“I am proud to nominate the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, Mike Pompeo, to be our new Secretary of State,” Trump said. “Mike graduated first in his class at West Point, served with distinction in the U.S. Army, and graduated with Honors from Harvard Law School. He went on to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives with a proven record of working across the aisle.”

SW PA carpenter Ray Ott chose Trump over Clinton in 2016, but isn’t happy and has higher regard for Obama now: “i didn’t realize how presidential he acted until i saw someone who doesn’t. it’s embarrassing”

You know what? Fuck SW PA carpenter Ray Ott. There was decades of public evidence that Trump was unfit for office.

I’ll go one step further and say that salt-of-the-earth SW PA carpenter Ray Ott voted for Trump because he hated we had an African American president.

Fuck these Trumpgretts people. Said it before, say it again: their “OMG oopsise sorry” shtick is bullshit because they’ll unquestioningly vote for the next GOP version of Trump that crawls out from under a rock.

re: #152 Shiplord Kirel, live from behind wingnut lines

There are times when I think it was better for the world that Stalin came out on top of Trotsky though. One, he was a much more competent commander of the Red Army Two he believed in exporting world wide revolution Three it was his plan to industrialize Russia that Stalin used so Four without the paranoia ramped up to Stalin’s 11+ level, some serious damage could have been done around the world by 1940.

Doesn’t make Stalin any better, just that sometimes the devil you know…

And who do you suppose would vote against her? The only real possible is McCain, and as long as she says she’ll follow the law, I don’t see this as a possible fight. As far as I can see, her only problem would be her complete lack of a moral compass, and that hasn’t really stopped the confirmations so far. She actually seems to have to the experience and qualifications and probably doesn’t want to destroy the Agency, so she might even be the best pick to date.

She’ll probably be confirmed. It doesn’t have to be painless.

Well, there’s your proof that news does not take a snow day.

Snowing like a right bastard out here this morning, that heavy, wet snow that weighs so much it crushes down the snow that fell earlier. It’s been snowing since about 2AM and we’ve got about an inch and a half out there. But it’s supposed to go until about 6 this evening, so we’ll see where we are at that point.

Over the weekend the Boston meteorologist I listened to while driving in Mass said “don’t worry, it’ll be that light powdery stuff.” Turns out it’s fine but wet snow right now. Started around 6am here. Should get up to an inch per hour through much of the day.

Greets and saluts from the snowy NYC metro area where the Resistance continues despite Nunes shutting down the GOP sham investigation.

Nunes is a hack and complicit in Trump’s coverup. How do we know this? Because Nunes has telegraphed his actions before. His actions have been sketchy from even before the investigation started, and he was part of Trump’s transition team.

He is no casual bystander.

Everyone on the Hill knows it. The Senate GOP knows it. The Senate Intel Committee knows it, and they should haul his ass before their committee to testify under oath as to what he knew and when, and why he violated the rules on releasing information.

The House GOP is complicit with Trump, and they’re covering for Trump - and that includes Ryan as well, who has blessed this entire shit show.

They’re all too interested in getting their grubby hands on tax cuts to give a shit about US national security.

The same people who complained there weren’t enough Benghazi hearings are cutting short a single Trump investigation before hearing evidence and testimony from principals to even the June 2016 meeting with Russians.

Mueller absolutely will look at Trump’s firing of Tillerson.

Why? Because the timing is suspect. All this admin does is lie and obfuscate about everything, and Tillerson is gone because he had audacity to stand up for the UK and US foreign policy and strategic interests by clarifying that the US wasn’t going to meet with North Korea without preconditions.

That walkback was enough to get Trump into a frothing tizzy.

Trump values loyalty above all else, including basic competency and knowledge. So he shitcanned Tillerson and it raises more questions about how Trump fires people in Trumpworld that can inform Mueller about how/what happened with Comey and everything Trump does.

It also raises separate questions as to why Trump continues to show deference to Putin and Russia at every opportunity, including when UK flat out called Russia for war crimes/violating the Chemical Weapons Convention for unleashing chemical weapons - an advanced nerve agent developed by the Russians meant to evade detection and very hard to treat medically - against Skripal and his family.

Trump always defers to the Russian aggression. That’s why everything Trump does is suspect. It’s also why Nunes ending the House GOP sham investigation is questionable. Nunes ended it without interviewing all the key people in Trumpworld, but thinks he’s got the full picture.

This reeks.

I am sure we have been on pins and needles since November (I know, where does the time go?!)

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — A grandson of cult leader Charles Manson has won the bizarre California court battle for the killer’s corpse.

A Kern County Superior Court commissioner ruled Monday that Jason Freeman of Florida can collect the remains of Manson from the morgue in Bakersfield.

Manson’s body has been on ice since he died in November in a Bakersfield hospital. He had been serving a life prison sentence for orchestrating the 1969 killings of pregnant actress Sharon Tate and eight others.

The fight for Manson’s remains was waged between Freeman, a man who claims he was fathered by Manson before his followers carried out the heinous slayings, and a pen pal who collects so-called Manson memorabilia.

The dispute over the body foreshadows a similar fight over his estate in a Los Angeles courtroom.

Heh, Florida.

Apologies if already posted, but this looks a little different now:

Two top Russian spy chiefs traveled to Washington last week to discuss counterterrorism issues with CIA Director Mike Pompeo, but the unusual visit also raised concerns among some U.S. officials that Moscow could interpret the encounter as a sign the Trump administration is willing to move beyond the issue of election interference, current and former U.S. intelligence officials said.

If you awoke to the news from The Washington Post that Tillerson was out as SOS, and that he will be replaced by CIA director Mike Pompeo, and your first reaction wasn’t to connect Tillerson’s departure to these remarks, you should go back to bed for a couple of hours. Remember that, on Monday, the day that Tillerson allied himself with British Prime Minister Theresa May and with common sense in pinning this deadly caper on Russia, official White House spokesdrone Sarah Huckabee Sanders gargled a whole bunch of banalities in her press briefing without ever once mentioning Russia.

And the original tweet about the Under Secretary ought not have used the word “aide”, as indeed the SoS has actual aides (for security, information, etc.).

It’s too often the case where a story writer goes for an easy word instead of a more accurate one.

The guy fired is actually pretty senior.

I hope the rest of the political appointees who have any shred of self-dignity realize they are doomed, sooner or later.

About Trump’s former campaign chairman:
Manafort could face ‘rest of life in prison,’ judge says

[…]

“The defendant is a person of great wealth who has the financial means and international connections to flee and remain at large, as well as every incentive to do so,” Ellis wrote in an order setting the terms of what the judge called “home incarceration” for Manafort, 68, who lives in Alexandria but also has homes in Florida and on Long Island.

“Given the nature of the charges against the defendant and the apparent weight of the evidence against him, defendant faces the very real possibility of spending the rest of his life in prison,” wrote Ellis, an appointee of President Ronald Reagan.

Yes, very true. Those were all excellent films.

When it comes to reboots, I liked J.J. Abrams’ idea of rebooting the Star Trek franchise by placing it in an alternate timeline. It allows the writers to have the freedom to explore new ideas and storylines without being constrained by the original continuity.

That being said, my disappointment (for lack of a better term) is that I want to see new Star Trek stories set in a future timeline after Star Trek: The Next Generation/Deep Space Nine. A new series, set….let’s say…..150 years or more after the events of that timeline. Star Trek has always been about the future. They need to start thinking about that instead of prequels or further reboots.

Trump is so radioactive that Tom Cotton refused to become his new CIA Chief.

The White House didn’t want to open up Cotton’s Arkansas Senate seat after the GOP’s shocking loss in the Alabama Senate race and other special elections.

The GOP are so scared they were concerned they might lose ARKANSAS,….ARKANSAS!!!

Whatever the reason, anything that keeps Tom Cotton away from any exercise of any more power than he has is likely a good thing for the country and the world in general.

From what I’ve read, Trump’s already distanced himself from Saccone, apparently privately deriding Saccone as a weak candidate and a loser.

Of course, that’s typical Trump, no doubt about it. That being said, if Lamb wins PA 18 today, I’m sure the GOP leadership is going to be even more nervous about what might be awaiting them come November’s mid-terms.

Let’s wait for the results. I am nervous that the GOP knows they will win by 2-3% and are trying to frame this GOP victory as a major defeat for the Dems. We need to get the vote out and don’t want any premature celebrating so that our voters think that it’s not urgent that they show up. That’s how the Gingrich revolution succeeded — the Dems didn’t vote.

If Lamb wins tonight, no amount of “Saccone was a poor candidate” is going to stop the bleeding. The party threw tens of millions into this race, a race in a district that is blindingly white and Trump won by 20% less than 2 years ago. Hell, Trump himself went and stumped for him the weekend before the election. He pushed through unpopular trade tariffs in order to shore up support among steel workers.

There is no way to spin a Lamb win tonight as a “good” thing for the GOP. The spin will simply be about how bad it looks for them in November.

Like I said yesterday, for the GOP to breath a sigh of relief tonight, Saccone has to win by double digits. Not pull off a squeaker win, but coast to victory on a margin so large that he’ll be taking victory laps before bedtime. A close win of less than 5% will be spun as “proof” by the wingnuts that Trump’s not toxic, but that’s not how the people actually running will see it. They’ll see a 15+ point swing against them, which will be their ass in anything but a race where they comfortably win by better than 20% every election.

Maybe they could build one around Wesley phasing in and out of existence.

The big reason why there’s so much focus on prequels and reboots is the same reason that Marvel can’t put the X-Men into their MCU: CBS and Paramount split the rights and so neither really owns the whole enchilada. Paramount has the rights to the movies, but can’t use anything that appears in the TV series, while CBS has rights to the series but can’t touch the movies. So Paramount can make movies about Kirk and crew but have to avoid referencing the TV series outright, while CBS can make series in the TOS era but can’t have Kirk and crew onscreen.

re: #555 Dr Lizardo

Best way to avoid a conundrum is for CBS to create an entirely new series set in the Star Trek universe, but as I said, taking place in the 26th century or something like that. That way there’s no need to have Kirk, Spock, Scotty, etc., being mentioned, except perhaps in passing reference.

Hell, even go with the 28th century; that’s far enough removed from any continuity - or intellectual property rights - issues.

Consider all the problems that we already deal with in Trek prequels/reboots. Now imagine trying to create a post-Voyager series that would satisfy all the fans. Hell, just the appearance of Klingons with rigged foreheads in the first Trek film caused problems with fans and that was with Gene arguing “They always looked that way, we just didn’t have the budget for it.”

Not just that, but also shifting alliances, perhaps the Klingon Empire either in ruins or simply gone, with competitors trying to pick off pieces and the Federation trying to create a semblance of order and ward off perhaps even greater threats.

There’s tons of potential - it just needs to be developed and explored.

Star Trek’s greatest theme is that humanity has a future - that we won’t all just destroy each other in a fit of epic stupidity. That we can work together for the betterment of everyone. I’d like to see that again.

Despite the fact the rest of Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets was meh, the opening credits of that flick were two-odd minutes of classic sci-fi optimism. That’s the film I wanted to see. And that’s the Star Trek I’d like to see too.

You can really have only one of two things: A bright, optimistic future…or big space battles. That’s what made DS9 so divisive among fans, that the whole Dominion War arc meant war, death, and characters engaging in acts that were a total betrayal of “Gene’s ideals.” This one sequence alone pretty much put the whole “optimistic future” ideal in the grave for years:

I liked DS9 because it was about optimistic people facing the kind of adversity that tests them, and finding their way back to being optimistic even though their context requires painful choices and cynical ones. And people being genuinely fucked up by painful experiences.

The thing about Treks that didn’t do long story arcs is…it’s easy to make a one, two episode plot where at the end no one is doubtful or dented by the events (though, honestly, Next Generation involves quite a bit of “why isn’t anybody fucked up by that thing they went through?” handwaving). There’s a soft reset of character disposition with each adventure.

Well, a large part of the reason for all of that is that DS9 was basically the redheaded stepchild of the Trek franchise. Berman and Braga had cut their teeth on TNG, so they were really stuck with handling that series based upon the guidelines that Gene had set at the beginning (though with some changes, as Gene would have hated the Borg). DS9 got greenlit by B&B, but they never had any real hand in it, as Voyager was their baby and you can see it’s basically TNG with the numbers filed off. Same deal with Enterprise a decade later.

DS9 was ran by guys like Ron D. Moore (later of Battlestar Galactica fame) who wanted things like serial storylines, character development, drama, conflict, and everything that came with a mature scifi series. It doesn’t help that JMS all but accused Paramount of stealing his ideas for Babylon 5 after showing him the door.

That’s not just an engineering difficulty, by the way. There’s a damn good reason even our automated space probes have been one-way trips to Mars (well, aside from the massive increase in weight that would be needed to provide return capability, a la the Saturn V or bigger): The orbital schedules make it so that in order to return from Mars and safely land on Earth or enter orbit, you have to wait a long time there - which would increase the weight requirements astronomically, in order to provide enough supplies to sustain a colony for the time required for the return-trip window to line up.
