Christianist terrorists:

3 arrested on gun charges suspected in Minnesota mosque bombing

The suspects were identified as 47-year-old Michael B. Hari, 22-year-old Joe Morris and 29-year-old Michael McWhorter. All are from Clarence, Illinois, a rural community 35 miles north of Champaign-Urbana. A fourth man also faces the gun charge, but he was not identified as a suspect in the bombing or attempted bombing.

I suspect that the Michael B. Hari in that article is the same one who writes (from the reviews, not very good) books about central Illinois and…. yes, Christianity:

One Faith: Defending the Faith in the 21st Century

Does God exist? How do we know the Bible is true? How do we know that our beliefs are true, and others are false? These and other important questions are answered in a fun and easy to read format that will challenge and interest you! This volume of apologetic essays from an Old Order Anabaptist perspective was written at Rancho Tres Hermanos, in the desert of Northern Mexico, near Zaragoza, Coahuila in 2014-2015. It includes proofs for God, the nature of creation, the Scriptures, and heresiology including a lengthy section on Islam.

Rex was a horrid SoS and actively tried to ruin the State Department that was entrusted to him and he was one of the best cabinet members Trump had.

We are soooo screwed.

Fuck ‘em with a rusty spork. I remember that bombing and how pissed off it made me. I actually kind of expected some kind of right-wing Christian nutjob. The fact that they CAME HERE, FROM ILLINOIS, to try to kill Muslims spins me to a level of pissed off that I rarely achieve.

Dude has history, assuming this is him.

From 12 years ago:

Jury finds former sheriff’s deputy guilty of abduction

Following 90 minutes of deliberation, a jury of eight men and four women on Friday found a former Ford County sheriff’s deputy and sheriff candidate guilty of child abduction.

Michael Hari, 35, dressed in black and sporting a full beard, stared straight ahead at the jury as his verdict was read.

Hari had taken his two daughters, Mollie Hari, 15, and Allene Hari, 13, to a Mennonite colony in Central America when he feared he would lose custody of the girls to his ex-wife, Michele Frakes of Peoria.

Interesting. I grew up about 35 miles south of there and have never heard of Clarence. I know of Paxton nearby. I don’t think there’s a lot of difference between Illinois and Indiana in their past as mostly “sundown” areas (non-whites better not stick around past sundown). The Peoria area gave us Matthew Hale, a religio-white supremacist who inspired another young racist from the Chicago/Wisconsin area to go on a shooting spree ranging from suburban Chicago to Bloomington, IN and back to Illinois, killing Ricky Birdsong (Northwestern U basketball coach, a Korean grad student, a black minister and injuring others). I guess I’m saying I am not surprised.

Human Rights Campaign and other equal-rights groups are aghast at the selection of Mike Pompeo for Sec’y of State.

thedailybeast.com

LGBT rights groups were not thrilled with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson—but they are aghast at the news that President Trump has replaced the former Exxon CEO with CIA Director and former Kansas congressman Mike Pompeo.

Human Rights Campaign president Chad Griffin said in a Tuesday press statement that Pompeo was “a reckless choice to lead our nation’s diplomatic efforts” due to his “longstanding opposition to LGBTQ equality.”

“The decision to nominate anti-LGBTQ Mike Pompeo could have serious consequences for the United States and LGBTQ people around the globe,” Griffin said, adding that Pompeo could only contribute to the already “rapidly declining” role of the State Department in “advancing human rights” on the international stage.

The LGBT media advocacy group GLAAD also blasted Trump’s decision on Twitter, highlighting the fact that Tony Perkins, president of the anti-LGBT organization Family Research Council, is celebrating the sudden shift in power at the State Department.

Zero.

If y’all want a war between the Episcopalians and the Southern Baptists, won’t happen. They address issues, not each other. For instance, Episcopalians made same sex marriage a sacrament, Southern Baptists issued a statement against it. Episcopal Church issued a statement of full support for gun control efforts, Southern Baptists are saying nothing. The two are polar opposites but you won’t see the Episcopal Church call out another denomination, just like you won’t see Southern Baptists denounce us. Everything is around specific issues.

There’s a reason for that. We don’t lump all people together under a label. There are conservative Episcopalians and liberal Baptists.

Just like there are liberal and conservative Atheists. Shall I assume the label “atheist” means all of you hold the same positions?

It condemns the bombing, not the conservative churches that preach violence. It was the second half of that sentence I referred to: No church will ever condemn another church.

And as a branch of the United Methodist Church, that statement would not have been released unless UMC bishops allowed it.

Good on them for condemning a mosque bombing, no points for failure to condemn churches that preach hate.

No church has even condemned the Christian Identity overt Nazi racist churches.

When the UMC condemns the Southern Baptist Convention I’ll reconsider my position.

Moreover, rural areas with few voters tend to complete their counts first, while cities tend to report late. If Mr. Saccone is running behind in the rural areas, he is in real trouble.

Moreover, the GOP spent a ton of money on this special election. I imagine if the vote totals don’t turn around quickly, there are going to be piles of Republicans sweating out the election in November.

A district this red going for a Democrat, right after the Alabama senate election, means nearly every GOP House district is competitive.

This is pretty cool:

ICON has developed a method for printing a single-story 650-square-foot house out of cement in only 12 to 24 hours, a fraction of the time it takes for new construction. If all goes according to plan, a community made up of about 100 homes will be constructed for residents in El Salvador next year. The company has partnered with New Story, a nonprofit that is vested in international housing solutions. “We have been building homes for communities in Haiti, El Salvador, and Bolivia,” Alexandria Lafci, co-founder of New Story, tells The Verge.

….

Using the Vulcan printer, ICON can print an entire home for $10,000 and plans to bring costs down to $4,000 per house. “It’s much cheaper than the typical American home,” Ballard says. It’s capable of printing a home that’s 800 square feet, a significantly bigger structure than properties pushed by the tiny home movement, which top out at about 400 square feet. In contrast, the average New York apartment is about 866 square feet.

I wonder what NYT is seeing? Saccone keeps getting stronger according to them.

From their page:

Our tally of votes comes from results reported by county election officials. It may differ from the totals at the top of the page, which were assembled by The Associated Press. (Right now, our counts are about even.) Below, our best guess for how many votes each candidate will end up with when all votes are counted…

re: #319 weave

If you really want a 50 state strategy or to win in red areas, you have to knock off the purity tests and accept that in these areas, representatives should represent the voters in their district.

Believe it or not, there are a lot of liberals who also love their guns and cherish their right to own them. Many of them will vote on that one issue because that’s a big deal for them. But other than the guns, they care about and support all other Democratic positions.

Be in this to win.

Yup. I’m a gun owner. I do care about that, but that is not my sole motivation, and I care about legislation that makes gun owners freakin’ responsible for owning the things. They aren’t paperweights. I’m all for Jim Wright’s suggestion of legislating the NRA’s own safety rules as law.

I care about other issues that the Democratic Party stands for and the Republican Party stands against. I am not a one-issue voter so I won’t vote solely on a position of guns. That said, others might.

Donald Trump carried it by a giant 58-39 margin in 2016, and Democrats weren’t even able to field a candidate here either that year or in 2014. Yet Republicans have had to spend over $10 million to try to defend this seat. They simply can’t do that for seats this red in November—and there are a ton of seats that are bluer.

The point to focus on is not the whether-we-win-or-lose, but imagine the GOP having to spend $10M on every district with less than a +20 margin this fall.

That and it’s tough to tell voters in other states, “Well, we came close” when it’s time for them to vote.

To a lot of people who are not politicians or politics junkies, a loss of fifty votes is no different than a loss of ten thousand votes. All they see is a loss.

The victories by Danica Roem in Virginia and Doug Jones in Alabama are the kinds of things that energise voters. While John Ossoff did surprisingly well in Georgia, he still lost, and that’s all that’s remembered about that election.

It will be a shame if Lamb doesn’t win. But if every +20 Trump district is a toss-up like this, the Democrats are going to win control of the House easily in November.

My Republican county prosecutor (who is also our village attorney) was talking favourably about Dave Domina at the village board meeting last night. Domina is the man who ran against Ben Sasse. He also represented Bold Nebraska in its fights against the Keystone XL Pipeline.

He had nothing but good to say about Mr. Domina (we were discussing him in context of a crapfest of issues that have come out between two state organisations). Our attorney said he would support Mr. Domina if he ran again for an office. (Mr. Domina is a Democrat.)

In terms of raw votes, it’s Lamb 101,907, Saccone 100,979. The small bit of good news for Lamb is that his raw vote lead actually grew slightly with the last update.

Ab-so-freakin’-lutely. It doesn’t matter if the Republican Party has had to spend $50 million in an R+99 district to elect Buster the Crash Test Dummy by 87 votes. The bottom line is that Buster (R) goes to Congress or whatever and the (D) in the race - no matter how brilliant or qualified or excellent a campaigner- goes to the Loser bin. Which is how the media is going to report it: the GOP spin is the default narrative, and only a Dem victory - narrow or landslide - is going to erase that disadvantage. THEY could give a crap about “close” or “shifts” - results are all that matters. And I think it’s about time the Democrats start thinking that way, too.

Just had a very cool experience.

I went to The Electric Fetus, one of the best LP/CD and gift stores in the Twin Cities this evening to pick up the new James Hunter CD. I walked through the door into the store and man something sure sounded familiar…

They were playing the EP by the band I was in in the late 70’s-early 80’s. They had a used copy and someone decided they wanted to hear what it sounded like. The whole record is only about 18 minutes long so it was pretty amazing that I walked in just as they started playing it. I gave the clerks the history of the record and then tried to remember what I’d come to the store for in the first place.

They followed up our EP with a rap record with the word “fuck” featured heavily in the lyrics. They may have been trying to purge the “new wave” vibes from the store. It was a cool moment anyway. I remembered James Hunter and came home with the new CD. It’s playing now and it’s also very cool.

Known for his outspoken views in defence of police, Clarke became the Make America Great Again movement’s tactical response to Black Lives Matter. He called Black Lives Matter a ‘terror organization’ in his memoir and predicted they would join forces with Isis. In late 2016, he was, according to the Daily Beast, part of a delegation sent by the National Rifle Association to Russia that met Dmitry Rogozin, Deputy Prime Minister of Russia on Defense and Space Industry. In January it was reported that the FBI was investigating the trip.

You might do better to look at the aggregate of all of the special elections since the 2016 generals. While PA-18 looks like it’s going to come down to the wire, which amounts to a more or less +20 Democrat shift, I think the overall trend is a bit shy of that.

As to a recount I know here in Philadelphia County if the amount of votes that separate the winner from the loser is less than ten thousand it is an automatic recount. The rest of the state might have slightly different rules but with a race as close as this one expect to see a recount.

If you’re a GOP Congressman right now you’re thinking a lot about how Republicans tend to do much better in special elections than in generals.

The GOP has every reason to be exceedingly nervous, even if Lamb loses; if a +20 GOP district can be decided by less than 1%, then none of their “safe” districts are as safe as they may have believed.

Local Moron Now Claims Mexico Border Wall Will “Pay for Itself”

Quoting a line from a story tweeted by Fox News, Trump wrote on Twitter that, “According to the Center for Immigration Studies, the $18 billion wall will pay for itself by curbing the importation of crime, drugs, and illegal immigrants who tend to go on the federal dole …” For those who are unaware, the Center for Immigration Studies is a group that “favors far lower immigration numbers and produces research to further those views.” Some of its greatest hits include a thoroughly panned claim that “immigrant households receive 41 percent more federal welfare than households headed by native-born citizens,” and another that immigrants are to blame for global warming. Unsurprisingly, it is a favorite source for members of the Trump administration, particularly senior adviser Stephen “White males should be a protected class” Miller and Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who was accused on Tuesday by an outgoing ICE official of making “false” and “misleading” statements about immigration, or what he presumably calls “that scourge on society.”

When they do find someone to marry it’s generally about mutual usage, because he’s a man-baby that can’t actually stand mutuality and living with someone cracks open the idea of an inherent dominance for men, but also can’t stand to be alone; and because she’s just resolved that this is the solution to several problems.
