Trump’s Kiss of Death Endorsement: Failure in Pennsylvania

Politics • Views: 43,710

The race hasn’t been officially called for Conor Lamb yet, but even if by some chance Trump’s pick Rick Saccone manages to eke out a win, it’s still a humiliating failure for the Trump-thing, in a Pennsylvania district he won last year by 20 points.

I’ve been skeptical of the “blue wave” narrative, but I’m starting to believe it could happen. This is a stunning upset for the Trump agenda of racism and nationalist jingoism, and shows that many of his own voters are losing faith in him. Couldn’t happen soon enough.

Slightly more than one year into the Trump regime and it’s all coming apart. What needs to happen, though: this dismal and embarrassing episode in US politics has to be pinned on the Republican Party for eternity. At every opportunity to stand up against Trump’s ugliness, they collapsed into craven pandering and enabling in an utterly revolting lust for power. May it never be forgotten.

Trump doesn’t even know who this Saccone guy is. Didn’t go to PA to headline a rally for the dude, who was in a Democrat Party district, by the way, and the Dem campaigned as a GOP anyway, Believe me.

You know what? I’m really happy about this. My family became Democrats when they lived in Western Pa for the most part so I’m glad to see Western Pa going back a little blue even if to a more moderate Dem than myself. Plus Conor is only a few years older than I am so I’m happy to see a fairly young but quite accomplished guy in Congress.

All I know is that I cannot afford to contribute to every Democrat running in a GOP district the amounts that I gave to Ossoff, Lamb, Doug Jones, and Rob Quist. Hope the Democrats can find sufficient funding for all the races they are running!

I only hope with the absentee ballots, Lamb increases what little lead he has.

Conor Lamb winning in that gerrymandered clusterfuck of a district is a very BFD. And I’ll call it a win because of the reaction of the GOP. They know they lost. And they lost in a district that will not exist, was gerrymandered to favor the GOP, and that is also going away. It’s like you are not only fucked, you are fucked.
A Democrat won in a district that should have been impossible. A shift. A page has turned. Add to that the kids from Parkland, and the student demonstrations today, and you have a very large BFD.
That district will no longer exist come November. What will exist will be a much more fairer representation of the population not drawn along GOP strengths.
Now, going not so completely off topic, I think, I went out to the store and just got back. I live close by the Susquehanna river, and the seagulls are moving back up the river towards the lakes. I look up, and in among the gulls is a bald eagle, cruising for a not paying attention gull I suspect. They have had mating pairs up and down the river for a number of years, and I see more and more of them.
That warms my heart also.
Yes.

Cotton doesn’t want the job. He can basically be Senator for as long as he wants and maybe run for president at some point. Why take a cabinet post that he won’t have past January 2021?

Rand Paul apparently opposes both Pompeo and Haspel.

Heh…. that means Trump’s already in trouble.

With that opposition, and McCain’s ongoing health issues meaning he’s absent from casting votes, both would fail to get to 50.

You are probably right, but it’s worth remembering that Cotton had to defeat a Democratic incumbent to win the seat. He just might be tempted by the opportunity to “Do Something,” instead of raving idiotically and ineffectively in the Senate.

Yeah but Trump does lateral promotions which means the Air Force One pilot is going to be the guy who gets Trump KFC and McDonalds when he’s hangry.

It shows you how big of a history nerd I am that I think of the politician and not the wrestler when I hear HHH.

That video is great though. They did a spot years ago where Vince McMahon was “killed” when his car blew up. Apparently Trump called the office to see if something happened and if Vince was alright.

That story line got scrapped because just after it aired, Chris Beniot (a top star in the company at the time) killed his wife and son in a murder-suicide and Vince had to come back on TV to address it.

I tuned in to Limbaugh to see his reaction to Lamb’s victory. His take? Democrats are disappointed because they thought Lamb was going’s to win by six points.

who thought that? names?

Yeah, gimme a break, Rush: throughout the PA-18 Special campaign, even Daily Kos - that enduring bastion of Fervent Democratic Overestimation - always had the race pretty much a tossup at best, with most of their posters going into orgasmic paroxysms of joy when the race finally narrowed into margin-of-error territory: first in Saccone’s, then in in Lamb’s favor. I’m not sure the Kossacks (or anyone else for that matter) figured the “margin of error” was going to be a few hundred votes, but there we are: a Democratic victory, and Rush Limbaugh trying to piss on it via BS about spurious “expectations”. So what else is new?

If there are 99 people — don’t they need 49.5 + 1 or 50.5 - so actually 51? If Rand Paul actually votes no (and he won’t), that means they won’t have the votes if all Democrats are there and vote no.

I wasn’t sure if it was 50% + 1 or just has to have more than half, so 49.5 rounded up. In either case, Pence wouldn’t be helping them, because he wouldn’t be breaking a tie if Paul and all Democrats vote against.

BTW, this happened in WVa on Monday:

[Gov] Justice fires Gayle Manchin after she issues news release about ‘politically-motivated legislation’

CHARLESTON, W. Va. — Gayle Manchin, West Virginia’s secretary for the arts and the wife of U.S. Senator Joe Manchin, offered her resignation today if it would remove political pressure and help save her department.

Shortly before 8 p.m., Gov. Jim Justice took her up on it.

Here’s what the governor, a longtime Manchin family friend, said about what happened:

“Earlier today, Secretary Manchin asked the Chief of Staff, Mike Hall, about how she should approach this,” Justice stated in a news release.

“She was told by the Chief of Staff to do nothing based upon my public comments this morning, and that my decision to veto or sign this bill has not been made. Later in the day, she decided to defy the Chief of Staff’s instructions and issued a press release. In her press release she offered to resign and remove any political cloud. If there weren’t any earlier political cloud, now there surely is one. She was very critical, made it political, and put me in a very, very bad position.

“She was told that we accepted her resignation, she refused, and we terminated her.”

Gayle Manchin came out swinging with her news release about 4:30 p.m.

Roberts has made a recovery. There’s a documentary on him on Netflix. Basically, another former wrestler/friend, Diamond Dallas Page, got a hold of him and got him sober and in better shape (via yoga). Page has actually helped a couple of older wrestlers who were self-medicating, including Scott Hall.

Yeah, DDP did some damn work getting Roberts on the right track, and doing his best to get Hall back despite a lot of stumbles on the latter’s part. He’s even helped other active wrestlers rehab into better shape. It’s not just getting them to actually accept yoga as part of their training regimen, but, as he put it, the ‘Accountability Crib’ that forced Roberts and Hall to own up to their problems.

It’s nothing short of a miracle that he got Roberts and Hall out of their respective pits, and it probably wouldn’t have worked if he wasn’t such a close friend to both.

Curious what he’s trying to sue them for since they apparently took the article down “pending further review” when he raised some concerns about it. Granted, this bit doesn’t sound too great from him:

The now-removed article alleges that Blumenthal has a tendency to take on Russian talking points, appeared often on Russian-owned media outlets, right-wing programs, and on podcasts and blogs that are also frequented with those associated with the alt-right.

“Blumenthal was not as clear of a spokesperson for Kremlin geopolitics before he appeared at the same RT gala as disgraced former National Security advisor Michael Flynn and the Green Party’s Jill Stein in December 2015,” the author of the article, Alexander Reid Ross, wrote.

And considering that Blumenthal probably qualifies as a public person, he’s going to have a higher standard to prove libel, specifically “actual malice.”

A sobering Opinion Piece from WaPo.

A Mueller report may never see the light of day

By Nelson W. Cunningham March 14 at 9:21 AM
Nelson W. Cunningham has served as a federal prosecutor in the Southern District of New York, general counsel of the Senate Judiciary Committee and general counsel of the White House Office of Administration.

Recently, Sen. Robert P. Casey Jr. (D-Pa.) expressed the view of many in Washington regarding the Trump administration and foreign influences: “I don’t think we’ll know anywhere near the full story until [special counsel Robert S. Mueller III] issues his report.”

That is, if we ever see a Mueller report.

Twenty years ago, independent counsel Kenneth Starr concluded his years-long investigation of President Bill Clinton with a 211-page report detailing — in famously explicit detail — the president’s affair with Monica Lewinsky. Starr submitted his report (and six volumes of supporting evidence) to the House of Representatives as “substantial and credible information that President William Jefferson Clinton committed acts that may constitute grounds for an impeachment.” His report hit the top of the bestseller lists.

As the media and the public avidly follow the slow reveal of the Mueller investigation, there is a widespread assumption that Mueller will pull it all together into a Starr-like summary.

But there are substantial legal barriers to a “Mueller Report,” at least one that would see the light of day.

First, special counsel Mueller is not independent counsel Starr. They were appointed under different authorities, with radically different rules for reporting and disclosure. Starr was required by the independent counsel statute governing his appointment not only to conduct a criminal investigation but also to submit a report to Congress if he found any evidence of impeachable offenses.

However, that statute expired in 1999. Mueller was appointed under the far narrower Justice Department regulation for special counsels that replaced the independent counsel statute. Far from requiring a report to Congress of impeachable offenses, these regulations tightly circumscribe Mueller’s ability to do so.

Section 600.8(c) of the regulations provides that the special counsel shall provide the attorney general with a “confidential report explaining the prosecution or declination decisions reached by the Special Counsel.” If the special counsel finds that “other governmental action outside the criminal justice system might be appropriate,” (presumably, such as impeachment) he is empowered only to “consult with the Attorney General with respect to the appropriate component to take any necessary action.”

I mean, my worry is, even if firing Mueller ends up damning him in the court of public opinion… 1) will it even matter from a legal/administrative standpoint, long as Republicans remain fully complicit? 2) Will the media continue to carry it with the same seriousness it deserves, or will it brush it all under the rug like it’s continued to do to almost a hundred separate issues that would have been career-ending scandals for anyone else not named Trump?

I’m thinking it would be a real mess if a report is completed and no one sees it. There will be hell to pay politically.

There are planned protests if Mueller is fired, I can’t imagine everyone allowing them to cover it up and not hitting the streets and taking it out on congress.

“I think the President helped close this race. I think you saw the public polling. The public polling wasn’t looking so good and the President came in and helped close this race and got it to where it is right now, which is within a few hundred votes.”

Republican strategist Mike Murphy - (we’re in deep doodoo) -

“We should be able to elect a box of hammers in this district. If we’re losing here, you can bet there is a Democratic wave coming.”

Some GOP strategist in PA - (why saccone really lost) -

So this is interesting, the district where I grew up (and my parents still reside) which covers parts of Orange County, LA county, and San Bernardino County, had Ed Royce decide to retire. Early polling showed the Democrats with a pretty good chance to pick up the seat (which includes the Nixon Library). But a recent poll out on the blanket primary shows Republicans holding the top two spots. There are only two Republicans running and five or six Democrats, so while the Republicans get 22% and 19%, the Dems split the rest of the vote. It does look like one of the Dems included in the poll has withdrawn from the race, and the top two Democrats are each at 16%, so the race is far from over, but it might be one worth keeping an eye on: California’s 39th.

Supply side economics makes sense in some circumstances, particularly if you’re dealing with an overtaxed, over regulated market. Basically, it works where you have high demand but low supply. And that presumption is based on not having free trade (which despite Trump’s best efforts, we mostly have), and on the notion that the manufacturing sector of the economy is the driving force. But we have mostly free trade and our economy has shifted from manufacturing to service based.

Senate website has the cloture vote but not the final vote posted. But since both votes have the same totals, I’m guessing these were the Democrats that voted in favor:

Benet (CO), Carper (DE), Coons (DE), Donnelly (IN), Hassan (NH), Heitkamp (ND), Jones (AL), Kaine (VA), King (ME), Manchin (WV), McCaskill (MO), Nelson (FL), Peters (MI), Shaheen (NH), Stabenow (MI), Tester (MT), and Warner (VA)

I know there are decent arguments for changes to Dodd-Frank, but from everything I’ve read, this goes way too far.

re: #260 Citizen K

I mean, my worry is, even if firing Mueller ends up damning him in the court of public opinion… 1) will it even matter from a legal/administrative standpoint, long as Republicans remain fully complicit? 2) Will the media continue to carry it with the same seriousness it deserves, or will it brush it all under the rug like it’s continued to do to almost a hundred separate issues that would have been career-ending scandals for anyone else not named Trump?

Well, you hit on one point here that, just IMO, is the key to the whole sordid mess: “Republicans remain fully complicit”. Trump and his gang have been able to weather those “career-ending scandals” so far mainly because the only entity (under the Constitution) that can practicably come down on him (Congress) has been unwilling to, mainly because it is under the control of dishonest, craven GOP hacks. The thing is, though, the midterms are coming up: if Trump say, fires Mueller and shitcans his information - which will be universally taken as an admission of guilt, but never mind for now - the GOP-dominated House in the 115th won’t do much, but if the Democrats take control in the 116th (and I think the backlash against Trump firing Mueller would be the factor that turns the “blue wave” into a tsunami), nothing’s going to stop them from reopening the Russiagate investigation. With several months’ more worth of shit to wade through, and public and media opinion probably turned even more against The Yam and his crooked Administration. So whether Mueller stays or goes, Trump is screwed either way.
Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy….. Sad.

From what I gather the issue was that the requirements made it difficult for smaller community banks to operate. Unfortunately, the new standard is so high that Countrywide wouldn’t have qualified before it’s collapse. That seems… unwise.

As far as who voted for it, none of these are particularly surprising, except for the fact that the thresholds are way too high.

Watching the local news. NBC reported a female victim. Man with assault rifle barricaded himself in residence hall where female lives. Definitely a domestic type situation.

I don’t have any statistics - but a high % of gun deaths are “domestics”. Too often we see this as a “good” thing because it means the shooter is not a random shooter - but I see it as an even more important reason to implement controls on who can own a gun. Students should not have to live in fear of being shot at school and women should not have to live in fear of being shot by their partners.

One thing that would help is if Democrats treated the stealing of their information as crime, which it was. While I was pleased by Conor Lamb’s (apparent) victory, I was very disappointed in his failure to raise the issue — even in a debate where he was specifically asked about Russian meddling. If the Russians murdered Adam Schiff with VX in broad daylight, and Lamb’s Republican colleagues attacked the FBI investigators, would he still say nothing? I have to wonder.

three e-mails today asking for money to make AZ-8 the same as PA-18.

Uphill battle here but in this environment, still perhaps doable. AZ-8 was the old Congressional seat of Ms. Giffords (until the Independent Redistricting Commission changed their designations) and as such, the gun control angle resonates here on both sides. The Dem candidate is a newcomer, an ER physician named Hiral Tipirneni who came out of the primary. She would make a welcome change to the Congressional landscape being a physician who actually has to deal with health care on the front lines versus someone twice/thrice removed like Carson.

if inclined, you can find a link to her campaign via azdem.org if so inclined…

I have the suspicion that the success in PA will give opportunities to flip seats like this one, a damn sight more hope than they used to.

If Iran resumes their nuclear program, watch the rest of the region nuclearize as well - Saudis buying their nukes from Pakistan. It would make the world a lot more dangerous, and increase the chances we see a nuclear exchange.

Ultimately, it would mean US interests get screwed in the region, and oil prices skyrocket, which helps…. Russia.

Yo greenthumbs, what should I plant on my patio? Ideally I’m looking for something that can sit in a 4 to 6 inch deep by by 40 to 60 inch wide by like 6 to 8 inch tall box on a table without drain holes and that will climb up a trellis. Needs to like six hours of direct sun per day and heat.

Is this intended to be a perennial plant, or something you’re going to redo every year?

Without drainage, salts will build up in the soil, meaning you will need to replant, probably annually.

So if you are using a non-draining tray, cover the lower inch or so with pea gravel.

You did not mention temps. But if you have that much sunlight you might as well grow some vine tomatoes.

Tomatoes are a good idea, it gets hot out there in the summer. I’m not totally against drain holes, I’ll just want to find a way to protect the wood table from the drainage. Grainger sent an extra pair of legs for the workbench I ordered for the garage remodel project so I built it up using a 30” x 60” hardwood top and coated it with Thompson’s water seal. I will have to re-coat it every year or two so I’ll probably just replant the box at the same time.

If you like tomatoes it seems like a winning scenario, especially if you want the small (“cherry”) varieties. The planter ought to be large enough for three different colors/varieties.

Drainage holes, even a couple, would help tremendously.

I say that in particular for fruit like tomatoes as the plants don’t like to dry out, but without drainage it is easy to over-water.

If you go with drainage (recommended), you can always get/make a tray to put under the planter, with the planter just raised a smidgen (via legs) off the tray, just enough to let the water out.

So everyone here knows how Trump wants to execute drug dealers.

Yeah, it’s batcrap insanity, but that’s not even the half of it.

There’s no definition of drug dealer under the law.

You’re either arrested and charged for possession or you’re possessing with intent to distribute. The difference? Quantity.

Therefore, over a certain amount found in your possession, you could be treated as distributing drugs and subject to those penalties.

In other words, Trump’s new best buddy Kudlow would be executed under Trump’s “ideal” because he was running through so much cocaine that he would be treated as distributing the drugs.

My friends still in the newspaper biz tell me most editorial departments (that is, news, sports, op-ed — everything not advertising) are down to skeleton crews at all but the major national papers. Ten (or even fewer) people handle all editorial content, including the editing thereof, in many small city dailies. Newspaper owners only see the bottom-line and don’t see the connection between revenue and great local and state coverage.

three e-mails today asking for money to make AZ-8 the same as PA-18.

From Wikipedia:

The term ultima Thule in medieval geographies denotes any distant place located beyond the “borders of the known world”.[7] Sometimes it is used as a proper noun (Ultima Thule) as the Latin name for Greenland when Thule is used for Iceland.

I’m not religious, but I was kind of hoping Graham would find out his god is real and he was entirely wrong about Her.

A man arrives at the gates of heaven. St. Peter asks, “Religion?”

The man says, “Buddhist.”

St. Peter looks down his list and says, “Go to Room 24, but be very quiet as you pass Room 8.”

Another man arrives at the gates of heaven. “Religion?”
“Shia Islam .”

“Go to Room 18, but be very quiet as you pass Room 8.”

A third man arrives at the gates. “Religion?”

“Episcopalian.”

“Go to Room 11, but be very quiet as you pass Room 8.”

The man says, “I can understand there being different rooms for different faiths, but why must I be quiet when I pass Room 8?”

St. Peter tells him, “Well, the Christian Fundamentalists are in Room 8, and they think they’re the only ones here.”

There were no walkouts at the schools in our Trump +85% town. Our Dems meeting included a project to launch a march and rally on the 24th, in solidarity with the national March. Prepping a heavy voter registration effort.

Our county wouldn’t allow walkouts:

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - Horry County Schools will not allow student walkouts on Wednesday as part of a national effort to remember the 17 victims of the deadly shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla.

According to information on the district’s website, administrators determined a walkout “would present a safety concern for our students as they are entrusted to our care during school hours.”

Yeah, I’m sure it was out of concern for safety. Sigh.

Our county convention is on 3/24, so I guess we’ll all have to march in place at the convention.

In our tiny little community - very rural, somewhat pro-Trump - they had a walkout. I’m pretty sure, if it wasn’t sanctioned, it was at least not punished; I say that because there were posters hung prominently all over the school advertising the walkout. I’m reasonably certain that a school that intended to punish such action would not allow its advertisement.

Part of it isn’t even just being ‘indifferent’. It’s actively condoning, supporting, and perpetuating it. It feels like there really is infinitely more of those Americans who want outright more racism than we want to admit, and they’re intent on ensuring that this country remains racist forever at its core. And they seem to be winning.

A really cool skool would blur the difference between a protest and a field trip.

Onse day during our assignment in Italy, I was at home on an American holiday but Daughter2 was in class at her Italian middle school. As I walked to the pastry shop I heard noises outside the mayor’s office, so I went around the corner to check. The 8th grade teacher was leading Daughter Deb and the kids on a demonstration for heat repair in the classrooms. We locked eyes and I broke out laughing.

(Of course the Mayor couldn’t bend to such disorder, so he sent the Deputy Mayor out to deal with their shit.)

Twitter might not be America. But it feels like it’s closer than we’d like to admit. The internet is sometimes like alcohol: it gives us the freedom to act like what we really are and have an excuse to dodge the consequences. LIke the teacher who got recently exposed as a white supremacist podcaster, who tried to dodge and say it was just ‘satire’.

Tonight I asked my father, who is retiring as a public school educator in May, how many kids walked out at 10:00 a.m. this morning. “About a hundred,” he said. There’s about 900 students in his school. A lot of the students didn’t walk out, but some did. No one was punished, and all the kids were back in classrooms at about 10:19.

Agree. I don’t want to underplay the racism, but Twitter especially can be distilled, refined, concentrated racism that doesn’t extrapolate out to the rest of the country. The internet has allowed these people to get together in ways that were impossible 50+ years ago, so they are amplified beyond what their numbers would indicate.

I think there were some schools that turned it into a teaching opportunity on nonviolent protest and political participation. That’s really the way to go, if it were up to me. This is RUMINT, but pretty credible RUMINT: Trump preparing to fire Sessions, name Pruitt Acting AG (which he can be since he already holds a Senate confirmed position), and Pruitt fires Mueller. And McMaster likely to be replaced by Bolton. Shulkin also on way out, FWIW.

Silly as Kristol’s pretentious spook-speak might be, the worst part of it is that this sort of musical-chairs shuffle (or is “musical toilets” a better simile, given the shitshow this will engender?) isn’t - to this country’s disgrace - completely out-of-the-question, given the shambolic incompetence of “President” Trump and his imbecilic Administration.
