I actually stopped and thought twice before posting this one, because I just know some of you are going to hate this band, because they’re, well, different. They’re a bit like Battles, but not really.

For example, the first piece in this set prominently features a hellishly out-of-tune guitar chord. I love this chord, but I understand why some might not.

The second excursion is a little like listening to Pet Sounds while nodding off after drinking a little too much. With a neighbor doing major construction work in the next apartment.

And then… there is “Dog Milk.”

Loved the Battles song/video. I listen to it at least once a week. Just couldn’t quite get down with this group. I think they have the pieces for me to enjoy, but it wasn’t put together in a way that I like sonically. The first song was close, though.

Semi tip over slows traffic in Bridgeport (Scottsbluff Star-Herald, showing steaming corn mash from the ethanol plant spilled all over Main Street when a semi turning toward Scottsbluff took the corner too sharply)

Since the ethanol plant in Bridgeport is just a giant still, I wonder what would happen if I drove up with a couple gallon jugs and asked for a fill up?

The Dust Bowl is back! Had to go to Lubbock today. This is what I found:


60 mph winds, blowing dust, 1 mile visibility. It actually rained a little this morning, .02”, bringing the total for this year to, well, .04” (about a millimeter). It was just enough to dissolve some dirt and make it easier for the wind to pick up after it dried out. Yet climate change is still a libtard hoax.

Panhandle of Texas. Lots of friends I know who road trip always complain about Kansas and Nebraska and I always have my go to retort: “The worst place to drive through is the panhandle of Texas.” Bulldozed flatness, and more dry and dusty.

And it’s not just climate change. The most southerly parts of the Ogallala Aquifer, for all intents and purposes, are dry. That water is gone forever as far as us humans are concerned.

IIRC, St. Ronnie got paid something like $2 million for a single speech in Japan shortly after he left office (meaning also not long after he gave the Japanese some huge trade breaks). The first victim of the Austin bombings was Anthony Stephan House. (Aside: It really sucks that ABC used what looks like a cropped mugshot of the first victim that they got from the police in this article.)

He worked as a project manager for Texas Quarries until February 2017, a spokesperson for the company told ABC News.

Texas Quarries employs demolitions experts in their operations.

Quarrying at the site began in April 1929 when W. H. Johnson started researching Texas limestone and founded Texas Quarries. The company unearthed large cubes of the ancient rock and shipped them to Austin to be cut at a mill that ran on a new power source—electricity—provided by the Texas Power & Light Company.

In 1959, M.E. Ruby Jr. Inc. founded another quarrying operation on Anderson Mill Road. At first workers dug blocks of stone to be used for highway construction, said Mark McKenzie, president of Ranger Excavating, which bought the company in 1996.

Today the company still sells crushed limestone that workers blast out of the quarry on its 200-acre parcel of land south of the Texas Quarries site, McKenzie said. For its blasting operations the company uses less powerful charges than it has in the past, he said. Before 1996, the blasting schedule was unpredictable, but it is now performed at about 10 a.m. or 2 p.m. on weekdays. Federal guidelines and a city permit govern M.E. Ruby’s blasting procedures, McKenzie said.

Sequential / multiple killings are sometimes efforts to mask signal within noise. One example I remember from when I was a kid is Stella Nickell, who planted cyanide in Exedrin capsules to kill her husband and also put poisoned bottles on store shelves to make it look like he was a random victim. I hope the investigation is looking hard at everyone who had any association with the first victim, especially those who worked at or sub-contracted for TQ who had access to explosives.

Doesn’t look like it. The three pervious devices were placed on porches. Scuttlebutt here is that this one was attached to a fake For Sale sign with a trip wire. That’s *way* random. It also makes the device much less effective, as the explosion isn’t at all contained within a house or a porch.

I tend to agree with goddamnedfrank; it’s entirely possible that the first victim, the unfortunate Mr. House, was the sole intended target and that the additional bombings might be a red herring to throw law enforcement off track - make LE think there’s a mad bomber on the loose, randomly blowing people up.

Then, after a few more bombings (and victims) the bomber stops and if he or she was careful enough to conceal their tracks, the crimes remain unsolved.

There’s a lotta twisted folks out there.

Either way first instances are incredibly important in criminological etiology. Also, it can be both, serial killers often pick their first victims through personal association and then whatever the initial motivation find the act of killing itself too rewarding to stop.

Interestingly enough, the daughter flew into England from Russia a couple of days before the attack. She had previously been left alone in Russia.

Something sparked my curiosity about coal seam fires tonight, so looking through recent news articles has me pondering on why these things get so little attention.

Now, some will say there have always been non-human caused coal-seam fires, and they are correct.

However, human activity has definitely increased their occurence.

And there’s a nasty feedback loop now coming into play. As western US forests become drier (due to climate change), they are more fuel for above ground fires. But, above ground fires ignite underground fires. Then, underground fires (which are near impossible to extinguish), go create new above-ground fires.

It all seems like an ecological disaster that is being under appreciated for both the immediate impact and the possibility of future disasters.

For example, from last year: State works to control burning coal seam in South Canyon

A long-burning underground coal seam just west of Glenwood Springs that’s believed to have been responsible for sparking one of the area’s most devastating fires in terms of property loss 15 years ago this month is due for a new round of efforts to keep it from spreading.

I think what triggered my interest in this was watching a video on paleo-botany yesterday, and pictures were shown of the expanses of exposed coal seams on Ellesmere Island. These are open to the air, and the thought occurred to me that if some anarchist wanted to do eco-terrorism, they could try to set fire to these seams (cold as they are) and they’d burn forever, releasing masses of CO2, as well as mercury, into the atmosphere.

There are even fossil coal-seam fires that have been discovered on Ellesmere: schweizerbart.de

There has been interest in mining this surface-access coal:

It all seems like a disaster-in-waiting to me. Fortunately, the indigenous population that runs that part of Canada doesn’t appear to want to bend to the demand for coal.

But all around the world there are carbon deposits just waiting to be burned, and some of them will be burned not under controlled circumstances.

yup. without “documents” you are not eligible for any type of welfare or most social services

they cannot receive food stamps, and never have been able to. In general, even legal immigrants have to be residents for five years, IIRC.

Kushner’s criminal acts in NY cannot be pardoned by Trump. Trump can only pardon on federal crimes, and Kushner broke state laws, where only the NYS governor could consider pardoning or commuting any potential sentence handed down.

Oh, and Trump could also face state crimes for which he can’t pardon himself or others for the same reason.

Not in Lubbock. I am there today and I am reminded again of just how bad Lubbock drivers are. The place leads the nation in accidents caused by hitting stationary objects. Traffic signs, bridge abutments, fences, parked vehicles, storefronts, and houses are not safe anywhere in the city. One enterprising drunk managed to drive through the front door of an emergency clinic. One house that faces a dead end has been hit 4 times in 20 years. I will attempt to escape this afternoon, fleeing to the southeast during a lull in the carnage.

An acquaintance of mine was killed last week in Florida while walking across the parking lot at Publix. An older driver (81, IIRC) got into her car, started driving off, had a heart attack and plowed into him and the front of the store.

A self-driving car wouldn’t have done that.

He signed multiple SF86s and lied about his meetings with the Russians. He blamed it on staffers time and again.

He signed the SF86. The document makes it clear that lying or omitting information is punishable under 18 USC 1001 (which is a felony of up to 5 years in prison).

With the NYS crimes, he’s looking at multiple counts over multiple years. That’s potentially a lot of jail time as an official whose name is associated with all those claims.

I see the Uber self driving cars (at least two, sometimes 3 or more every day just before 3:15 p.m. while driving north on Priest in Tempe (because I’m headed to the freeway). They always turn right and go East on University towards ASU. I am going to be wary, very wary from now on.

Is there any concern for either hacking into the systems that control the cars or a glitch occurring in the programming and maybe even how they all match up with the satellite tech?
