Now for Something Completely Different: Palm - Full Performance (Live on KEXP)

YouTube

I actually stopped and thought twice before posting this one, because I just know some of you are going to hate this band, because they’re, well, different. They’re a bit like Battles, but not really.

For example, the first piece in this set prominently features a hellishly out-of-tune guitar chord. I love this chord, but I understand why some might not.

The second excursion is a little like listening to Pet Sounds while nodding off after drinking a little too much. With a neighbor doing major construction work in the next apartment.

And then… there is “Dog Milk.”

http://KEXP.ORG presents Palm performing live in the KEXP studio. Recorded July 11, 2017.

Songs:
Walkie Talkie
Composite
Shadow Expert
Dog Milk

Host: Troy Nelson
Audio Engineer: Kevin Suggs
Cameras: Jim Beckmann, Scott Holpainen & Justin Wilmore
Editor: Justin Wilmore

I love this chord so much.

I like the chord, but I want to know how they knew they were there when they got there.

Carried over from the previous thread:

re: #328 Belafon

I hate to sound like this, but I’m glad it didn’t crash solely because the Trumps don’t deserve any sympathy.

That wouldn’t be my concern. An aircraft falling out of the sky hits something on the ground. My sympathies would be toward anyone injured or killed on the ground.

Apropos the discussion of condiments downstairs, as I was about to take The Older Boy to work, The Younger Boy said, “Hey, as long as you’re at Safeway, can you get some yellow mustard? I don’t like that Grey Poupon stuff.”

I made him go with me to the store after I gave him shit for preferring low-brow condiments.

His response…..

De gustibus apparently EST disputandum.

Gotta love a boy who plays with his food.

Loved the Battles song/video. I listen to it at least once a week. Just couldn’t quite get down with this group. I think they have the pieces for me to enjoy, but it wasn’t put together in a way that I like sonically. The first song was close, though.

Big local news of the day:

Semi tip over slows traffic in Bridgeport (Scottsbluff Star-Herald, showing steaming corn mash from the ethanol plant spilled all over Main Street when a semi turning toward Scottsbluff took the corner too sharply)

Since the ethanol plant in Bridgeport is just a giant still, I wonder what would happen if I drove up with a couple gallon jugs and asked for a fill up?

The Dust Bowl is back! Had to go to Lubbock today. This is what I found:

60 mph winds, blowing dust, 1 mile visibility. It actually rained a little this morning, .02”, bringing the total for this year to, well, .04” (about a millimeter). It was just enough to dissolve some dirt and make it easier for the wind to pick up after it dried out. Yet climate change is still a libtard hoax.

Panhandle of Texas. Lots of friends I know who road trip always complain about Kansas and Nebraska and I always have my go to retort: “The worst place to drive through is the panhandle of Texas.” Bulldozed flatness, and more dry and dusty.

And it’s not just climate change. The most southerly parts of the Ogallala Aquifer, for all intents and purposes, are dry. That water is gone forever as far as us humans are concerned.

Yikes. Lubbock’s average rainfall should be around twenty inches a year; that’s four more than what we average here.

This area used to be marked “desert” on XIX Century maps. If Lubbock doesn’t get any significant rain soon, I can see climate refugees streaming north.

Sanders is a millionaire and is getting richer, all while he plays the game of “I’m for you, the little guy.” Such intolerable bullsh*t. He’s a one, and, at most, a two-trick pony. I know you remember how much noise they made when #44 got paid millions for a speech. I thought they were losing their freaking minds. They looked like the tools they are when PBO and his wife announced they were using the money he received for the speech, adding more of their own money to it and were using it to provide summer jobs for teens in Chicago. The same persons don’t say a d*mn thing when Gingrich, “W,” Flynn, Cheney, and the other RW grifters are paid huge sums to give speeches. Sanders needs to sit down and STFU. I really wish he’d follow my advice, but as long as he has his little core group of supporters, he won’t because he loves being adored.

IIRC, St. Ronnie got paid something like $2 million for a single speech in Japan shortly after he left office (meaning also not long after he gave the Japanese some huge trade breaks). This was when I knew that the so-called Japanese economic tsunami was bullshit, because what kind of business geniuses would pay two million bucks to hear a single word from a drooling has-been who had testified that he “couldn’t recall” anything 271 times before Congress when questioned about Iran-Contra?

But I find that nothing helps make a rotten world better than listening to a beautiful woman sing beautifully, and I would love to have spent years of my life listening to Nana Mouskouri sing not only the phone book, but the yellow pages. So as a Sunday night winds down, share with me a Bacardi (for Puerto Rico) and three minutes of beauty.

Maggie has the chutzpah to call an article about Hope Hicks “gauzy” after the Trump Whisperer herself puts out a psychological romance piece with phrases including:

He barreled ahead with a plan…

He vanquished the economic aides he had previously seen as having more stature than he did…

Projecting strength, control and power, whether as a New York developer or domineering reality television host, has always been vital to Mr. Trump…

Some of Mr. Trump’s allies have said that Mr. Trump was trapped in a West Wing cage built by Mr. Kelly, and has finally broken loose…

But Mr. Trump’s moods have always been like storm clouds passing quickly over a desert island…

And she includes the musings of those bastions of logic, Roger Stone and Henry Kissinger.

Ugh.

re: #83 gwangung

Particularly if it’s POC that are the targets.

Might be OK if they include other white people.

No IDs on the two “men in their twenties” tonight, PsOC or otherwise. The other victims *were* PsOC, and all three targeted victims appeared to be black, but one the bombs was placed on the wrong house, two down from a young woman who knew the previously killed men, and it blew up and seriously injured a 75-year old Abuela. Apparent collateral damage.

The news outlets are just shitting themselves on this story, despite the fact LEOs have made it perfectly clear that they’ll have nothing new before tomorrow morning.

The first victim of the Austin bombings was Anthony Stephan House. (Aside: It really sucks that ABC used what looks like a cropped mugshot of the first victim that they got from the police in this article.)

He worked as a project manager for Texas Quarries until February 2017, a spokesperson for the company told ABC News.

Texas Quarries employs demolitions experts in their operations.

Quarrying at the site began in April 1929 when W. H. Johnson started researching Texas limestone and founded Texas Quarries. The company unearthed large cubes of the ancient rock and shipped them to Austin to be cut at a mill that ran on a new power source—electricity—provided by the Texas Power & Light Company.

In 1959, M.E. Ruby Jr. Inc. founded another quarrying operation on Anderson Mill Road. At first workers dug blocks of stone to be used for highway construction, said Mark McKenzie, president of Ranger Excavating, which bought the company in 1996.

Today the company still sells crushed limestone that workers blast out of the quarry on its 200-acre parcel of land south of the Texas Quarries site, McKenzie said. For its blasting operations the company uses less powerful charges than it has in the past, he said. Before 1996, the blasting schedule was unpredictable, but it is now performed at about 10 a.m. or 2 p.m. on weekdays. Federal guidelines and a city permit govern M.E. Ruby’s blasting procedures, McKenzie said.

Sequential / multiple killings are sometimes efforts to mask signal within noise. One example I remember from when I was a kid is Stella Nickell, who planted cyanide in Exedrin capsules to kill her husband and also put poisoned bottles on store shelves to make it look like he was a random victim. I hope the investigation is looking hard at everyone who had any association with the first victim, especially those who worked at or sub-contracted for TQ who had access to explosives.

Who knows? It’s spring break time. They could have been out of town. Pretty damn fluid right now.

And again again, why target prominent East Austin black families and then put a bomb in front of a $600,000 home in Southwest Austin? Unless you are trying to monkeywrench the investigation, it doesn’t fit the MO.

Possibly. Anything is possible, given the info we have.

Doesn’t look like it. The three pervious devices were placed on porches. Scuttlebutt here is that this one was attached to a fake For Sale sign with a trip wire. That’s *way* random. It also makes the device much less effective, as the explosion isn’t at all contained within a house or a porch.

re: #90 Anymouse 🌹

I tend to agree with goddamnedfrank; it’s entirely possible that the first victim, the unfortunate Mr. House, was the sole intended target and that the additional bombings might be a red herring to throw law enforcement off track - make LE think there’s a mad bomber on the loose, randomly blowing people up.

Then, after a few more bombings (and victims) the bomber stops and if he or she was careful enough to conceal their tracks, the crimes remain unsolved.

There’s a lotta twisted folks out there.

This is sheer speculation at this point. It’s just as likely, maybe even more so, that this is the classic escalation pattern of a serial killer. After all, even in your scenario where this is all some kind of smokescreen, there is still in fact a bomber on the loose blowing people up, whether randomly or not. That much, at least, is not speculation.

That’s also possible; I’m reminded of the infamous Paraquat Murders in Japan….a series of unsolved murders that occurred in 1985. And of course, the Chicago Tylenol murders of 1982.

Either way first instances are incredibly important in criminological etiology. Also, it can be both, serial killers often pick their first victims through personal association and then whatever the initial motivation find the act of killing itself too rewarding to stop.

In addition, the two dead men belonged to prominent families who attended the same church all of their lives. Both were from upper middle class Austin black families. They *knew* each other, at least socially. The 17-year old Principal Bassist of the Austin Youth Symphony Orchestra may not have been the target. Could have been his mom or dad.

One other point for you and Frank to ponder. These were *not* high explosives. This could have been black powder, nitrocellulose, or match head pipe bombs. We don’t know. That information has not been released. But the Abuela was right next to the device when it blew and she lived. So it wasn’t gelignite, or plastic, or any of the other exotic instantaneous expanding compounds like those that were used in London.

This totally appears to be anarchist cookbook stuff.

Modern high explosives are laced with identification taggants that make tracing origin fairly easy for the FBI, so if they weren’t used that doesn’t really mean it’s not a trained expert. Expertise comes into play with the detonation circuitry, which reportedly was fairly sophisticated.

I’ve always wondered what “fairly sophisticated” means.

If I have a pipe bomb rigged with a wooden dowel between a firing pin and a detonator, connected to a monofilament line that is pulled aside when the box is opened, releasing the spring-loaded pin onto an empty 25-caliber cartridge epoxeyed into the end of the pipe, is that “fairly sophisticated”?

How about if I take an old mercury thermostat switch and a 9-volt battery, safe it with a plastic collar stay, and also connect that with monofilament to a hole in the outside of the box? Then when I pull out the collar stay and clip the mono, the circuit is complete and as soon as someone lifts the box and the merc switch moves, the circuit closes and pops the electric detonator. Is that “fairly sophisticated”?

The world wonders.

My definition of a “sophisticated” detonation device would at a minimum include a system with a timer delay before the arming completes and a way to disarm in case it gets armed accidentally.

Yup. Force projection, by any means. If that requires that you defy the Geneva Conventions, so be it. Putin authorized the kill shot, no doubt. He has to pay for his hubris.

Interestingly enough, the daughter flew into England from Russia a couple of days before the attack. She had previously been left alone in Russia.

If May doesn’t grab every bit of Russian money in London, including their property, and kick the Oligarchs and their relatives out, it won’t mean a damn thing. The 100 Families must be designated as international pariahs and expelled from the West. And she should demand the EU to do the same thing.

THAT will burn Putin’s ass.

Oh, wait, Brexit. Maybe the EU will laugh at her and say, “If you weren’t leaving, we would seriously entertain that idea, but…”

Something sparked my curiosity about coal seam fires tonight, so looking through recent news articles has me pondering on why these things get so little attention.

Now, some will say there have always been non-human caused coal-seam fires, and they are correct.

However, human activity has definitely increased their occurence.

And there’s a nasty feedback loop now coming into play. As western US forests become drier (due to climate change), they are more fuel for above ground fires. But, above ground fires ignite underground fires. Then, underground fires (which are near impossible to extinguish), go create new above-ground fires.

It all seems like an ecological disaster that is being under appreciated for both the immediate impact and the possibility of future disasters.

For example, from last year: State works to control burning coal seam in South Canyon

A long-burning underground coal seam just west of Glenwood Springs that’s believed to have been responsible for sparking one of the area’s most devastating fires in terms of property loss 15 years ago this month is due for a new round of efforts to keep it from spreading.

[…]

I think what triggered my interest in this was watching a video on paleo-botany yesterday, and pictures were shown of the expanses of exposed coal seams on Ellesmere Island. These are open to the air, and the thought occurred to me that if some anarchist wanted to do eco-terrorism, they could try to set fire to these seams (cold as they are) and they’d burn forever, releasing masses of CO2, as well as mercury, into the atmosphere.

There are even fossil coal-seam fires that have been discovered on Ellesmere: schweizerbart.de

There has been interest in mining this surface-access coal:

It all seems like a disaster-in-waiting to me. Fortunately, the indigenous population that runs that part of Canada doesn’t appear to want to bend to the demand for coal.

But all around the world there are carbon deposits just waiting to be burned, and some of them will be burned not under controlled circumstances.

Yes, because gov’t agents would never think to bring metal detectors or other means of searching for any firearms hidden in the house or on the property itself. And Johnny will regularly dig up that rifle to do preventative maintenance so that he can have it read when it comes time to rise up against the “tyrannical government.

lol, Snowden mildly complains about Russia…….in English.

The Snowden affair was the first time I became aware of the extent to which Russia was manipulating American (social) media to promote its own political aims and agenda.

All I can say is that they recognized a vulnerability and exploited it. For the most part, what they are doing is underhanded and shadowy but not really illegal.

If we are dumb enough to let social media news feeds shape our views on current events and political developments, then they are foolish not to take advantage of that weakness.

From the NY Mag story, above:

“During the campaign, Charles “Chuck” Johnson, an early supporter of Ted Cruz, said Lewandowski tried to hire him to do opposition research. Johnson said he declined the offer but that he and Lewandowski remained friends. Periodically, Johnson would use his website GotNews to prop Lewandowski up, once announcing, when there were murmurs he might work in the White House, “HE’S BACK!”

Johnson liked to call himself a journalist and “debunker of frauds,” but he was known primarily as a pervasive far-right menace, an oddity with few personal boundaries who’d once raised $150,000 for a neo-Nazi’s legal defense fund. In 2012, he had promoted unfounded accusations involving underage prostitutes and Bob Menendez, the Democratic senator from New Jersey, on the conservative website the Daily Caller. At the time, the publication’s executive editor overseeing the Menendez coverage was David Martosko. Today, Martosko is the political editor of the Daily Mail. About the Daily Mail’s Porter scoop, “I don’t know what I’m allowed to say,” Johnson told me. “Probe-Media, from my understanding, is going to be doing a lot more work with private eyes.”

Johnson was always taking credit for things he didn’t seem to have any connection to. He was usually wrong, but he did seem to know things, sometimes, that turned out to be true, and, sometimes, he seemed to know them before anyone else. He also seemed to benefit from the fact that the new administration was populated by people who hadn’t been following politics very closely in recent years. He claimed he knew about Porter months in advance of the stories, and that some mysterious “we” was pleased with how things unfurled, even if he was surprised it took so long. Johnson said Lewandowski had nothing to do with the stories and that he wasn’t among the people he’d told about Porter. (Reached repeatedly for comment, Lewandowski did not answer questions.)”

Trump would perjure himself the second he opens his mouth. I saw elsewhere that Trump and his lawyers likely freaked out when they saw the questions that Mueller wanted to ask - they freaked out because it probably hit them that Mueller already has the answers and they’re now painted into a corner.

On Tuesday, one of Mr. Kobach’s witnesses, a political scientist, Jesse Richman, testified that up to 18,000 noncitizens have registered or tried to register in Kansas. When the A.C.L.U.’s lawyer asked him about his methods for analyzing the state’s list of suspended voters, Mr. Richman said that, among other things, he flagged foreign-sounding names. What about a name like “Carlos Murguia,” the lawyer asked. Would he flag that one? Yes, Mr. Richman said. He was then informed that Carlos Murguia is a federal district judge who sits in the courthouse where the trial is being held.

It is not what I expect from that show and I went on Facebook to their page to express my indignation. No facts, just spin. GRRRRRRRRR!

re: #195 Belafon

On Tuesday, one of Mr. Kobach’s witnesses, a political scientist, Jesse Richman, testified that up to 18,000 noncitizens have registered or tried to register in Kansas. When the A.C.L.U.’s lawyer asked him about his methods for analyzing the state’s list of suspended voters

Are the 18k who tried to register the same as “suspended voters”? The article later references those who have had their applications to vote suspended. The editorial is a little confusing on this point. But, yes, the whole “foreign-sounding name” scam is Jim Crow reborn and out in the open.

re: #210 Sir John Barron

Ah, OK, this is a little clearer:

Richman has estimated that roughly 18,000 non-citizens are registered to vote in Kansas based on a review of temporary driver’s licenses and voter rolls.

The ACLU grilled Richman about his methodology to produce these estimates, which included flagging foreign-sounding names.

Dale Ho, an attorney for the ACLU, asked Richman if we would have flagged the name “Carlos Murguia” as a foreign-sounding name, according to the Capital-Journal.

Read more here: kansascity.com

So, the “flagging foreign sounding names” is among the tactics the study uses to inflate the likely number of illegal foreign registrations.

From the article:

Stephen Ansolabehere, a Harvard professor who developed the Cooperative Congressional Election Study, the data that Richman relied on his for his study, testified later in the day that the raw data inflates the rate of non-citizens voting partly because people who are actually citizens accidentally mark the box for non-citizens.

He is highlighting the need for basic and COMPREHENSIVE reforms of our voting system.

Universal ID for all citizens and registered legal aliens is needed. That would end a lot of issues connected with voter fraud, and also illegal use of US social services, which would in turn ease a lot of immigration-based issues.

Right now, they want to build a wall because it is too easy to get over here, get established as a resident and build a life. If we make that more difficult through a mandatory citizen/resident alien ID system, then we have removed a lot of that incentive.

And it would be a fuck of a lot cheaper than buying all that land and building, maintaining and patrolling a thousand-plus of miles of wall.

Here is the real problem. The GOP doesn’t want to actually fix anything. If it is fixed they can’t complain and try to manipulate things by looking to “fix” them.

A national ID card for any legal resident allowing you to vote and a fair way to draw congressional districts in states and the GOP may actually have to become decent politicians or fear losing a whole lot of seats and a lot of political power until they clean up their acts.

Do they want to clean up their acts? I don’t see anything that says they do.

Buried the lede there -

Besides the fact that Kobach is lying and relying on an expert witness who disagrees with what Kobach is claiming, Richman is stating that his main consideration for determining whether someone isn’t a legitimate voter is that they have a foreign sounding name.

Oh, and the name he would have excluded?

That’s the name of another federal judge in the building:

Dale Ho, an attorney for the ACLU, asked Richman if we would have flagged the name “Carlos Murguia” as a foreign-sounding name, according to the Capital-Journal.

Yes, Richman answered.

Ho informed him that Murguia is a federal judge whose courtroom is located in the same courthouse as the trial.

to appease all those scared of central databases, i’d suggest not making it compulsory

if you didnt want to vote, or get some government service, you wouldnt otherwise need to have one

and you could never be stopped or otherwise asked to produce it to prove anything

No. He can’t.

Kushner’s criminal acts in NY cannot be pardoned by Trump. Trump can only pardon on federal crimes, and Kushner broke state laws, where only the NYS governor could consider pardoning or commuting any potential sentence handed down.

Oh, and Trump could also face state crimes for which he can’t pardon himself or others for the same reason.

Not in Lubbock. I am there today and I am reminded again of just how bad Lubbock drivers are. The place leads the nation in accidents caused by hitting stationary objects. Traffic signs, bridge abutments, fences, parked vehicles, storefronts, and houses are not safe anywhere in the city. One enterprising drunk managed to drive through the front door of an emergency clinic. One house that faces a dead end has been hit 4 times in 20 years. I will attempt to escape this afternoon, fleeing to the southeast during a lull in the carnage.

An acquaintance of mine was killed last week in Florida while walking across the parking lot at Publix. An older driver (81, IIRC) got into her car, started driving off, had a heart attack and plowed into him and the front of the store.

A self-driving car wouldn’t have done that.

Of course he did. No personal responsibility for anything he does.

He signed multiple SF86s and lied about his meetings with the Russians. He blamed it on staffers time and again.

He signed the SF86. The document makes it clear that lying or omitting information is punishable under 18 USC 1001 (which is a felony of up to 5 years in prison).

With the NYS crimes, he’s looking at multiple counts over multiple years. That’s potentially a lot of jail time as an official whose name is associated with all those claims.

when they want to take something and in almost all circumstances of ‘mass’ killings, - in addition to all the other things a gun does and a gun gets you, more than almost any other it is a cowards way to get what he wants / to win / to be in control

it creates distance/space - makes it a bit less personal
makes it much easier to wreak havoc/death, terror, whatever

it’s the coward’s way
