If Guccifer2.0 was a Russian GRU agent, shouldn’t the nym be changed to GRUccifer?

Regarding Bolton boarding the S.S. Trump (S.S. stands for “Shit Show”), one of the best comments I’ve seen:

I have to look at the funny angle of stuff because this shit is getting bad and my HBP is bad enough already.

From Vanity Fair, in a article about how Mueller flipped Sammy “The Bull” Gravano to take down the *other* Teflon Don:

It is, one person close the administration recently observed, a “classic Gambino-style roll-up.” To understand how Mueller might now proceed, to get a sense of the compromises he’d be willing to make to bag the larger prosecutorial targets in his sights, it’s eye-opening to go back to the deal he cut with Sammy the Bull.

I worked with law enforcement special details that targeted high-value criminals in the early 2000s. What they do is slow, tedious, and as inexorable as a glacier.

Right now, there are a lot of guys with their balls in the squeezer. We’ll see how long Manafort can stand it until he flips. And after him … well, Steve Bannon is a fucking sleazy thug, but he has a talent for spotting character (see his description of Chuck C. Johnson, for one) - and he KNOWS that Mueller is going to “crack that little pussy Jared like an egg.”

I get back from Black Panther, try to catch up, and end up CL’ed at the bottom of the stairs. So here’s my post:

Sometimes the “white guy” trope gets old. The overwhelming majority of us white guys have never desired to do any such thing (see also the “veteran” trope, “mentally ill” trope, &c).

Do white guys seem to be the large majority of such killers? Yes. Hashtag NotAllWhiteGuys.

But perhaps we need to ask ourselves, What is it about White culture that keeps producing this violence?
- Maybe it’s in the lyrics of their “Country Music”, where bad thing after bad thing befalls them.
- Maybe it’s in their clothes, the Dockers cinched tight around their waists.
- Maybe it’s in their slang - “run and gun”, “shooting the rapids”, “hot as a pistol”.
- Maybe it’s in their Powerpoint presentations, with all those “bullet points”.

Why does the White Community so often choose hustlers and conmen as leaders?

Hey, you’re white - tell my why your people keep doing this over and over again, killing their own people?

I think both of our observations fall under DARVO— deny abuse, attack victim, reverse victim and offender.

Abuse tactic, again. It’s all he’s got, but it works because he’s got an audience that want to have and abuse power, and live vicariously through him. They’ve been primed for that by the whole demimonde of right-wing culture in which it’s no longer “conservatism” that drives anything, but vainglory and incontinence minimally disguised as some kind of “principle” rooted in tradition. I don’t want to fully lay out all the detail, but it’s what unites the various parts of the current reactionary movement: they all have ideas that they conjure with—God, Jesus, the Free Market, American exceptionalism—but that in practice have no meaning beyond appeal to authority, applied as needed, to obtain what they want in the moment.

It’s what de Sade observed—people will choose to empathize with the abuser because it’s fun. But de Sade was a true libertine—openly no fucks given, ever—whereas we’re dealing with people who want it both ways: to perceive themselves as channeling The Greater Good, but also to indulge their whims in a manner inconsistent with an articulate ethics.

NatGeo has a lengthy article exploring the anxiety of (some) white folks as they face a future in which white Americans are in the minority.
nationalgeographic.com
I’ve not read the whole thing yet, but the gist seems to be some white people are afraid that their “culture” is being replaced by the culture of other ethnic groups somehow, even as they manage to make friends with people from other cultures.

There’s also the belief that white (as in European) culture is superior to all others, which has been a thread running through history since the Roman Empire if not earlier.

Though I am white, I don’t fear demographic changes because (1) I realize culture does not belong to just one ethnic group but to all people living within that culture and (2) I have lived as a minority in two different countries already, and it was NBD. But I can see how others with a much more limited exposure to the world outside their own little bubbles could feel threatened. The proper response is to adapt, though, not try to battle the inevitable with violence and hate. The trouble is, no one seems to be helping these scared, frustrated white people cope with the inevitable societal changes, especially Trump and the GOP, and the entire RWNJ media machine.

Obama winning the presidency twice was the clarion call for these people. It’s like an entire cohort suddenly woke up and realized, “Holy shit, we’re not in charge anymore!” and got very, very scared because their entire world view got pulverized into dust.

Reliance on authority means they are unprepared to deal emotionally or intellectually with any systemic change on an individual level. They’re like children who rely on their parents to provide guidance and comfort at every turn. Suddenly, there’s a situation that mom and dad cannot fix, and the kids get anxious, because mom and dad didn’t teach them how to deal with adversity on a personal level.

Trump ran on the idea that he could fix everything “wrong” with America, singlehandedly. So far, he’s made an absolute mess of everything, but he still talks a good game and he has an entire media machine ready to back up his version of reality. How long they can continue to fool all the people who voted for Trump and the GOP is a big question. What will these people do when they realize their Fearless Leader is neither fearless nor a leader, and the GOP is only out to benefit itself and its fatcat donors? They don’t have the tools to cope with such an existential crisis.

But they do have guns.

I’m pasty white and I have no idea what the fuck this “white culture” is. As far as I can tell from listening to white people whining about the loss of it, what they are talking about is losing political control to people who aren’t white. They are talking about having to go out in public to conduct their daily lives and deal with people who aren’t white.

IMO, the best way to define it is to say that white culture is all about maintaining a white majority.

re: #46 wheat-dogg

First off, that article has a problem which is now endemic online: publishers are dropping time/date stamps, in order to keep their web sites from being seen in a temporal context.

Now, your URL does include a date, but the entire article can be published later with another URL and no one would know when it originated.

Part of the problem is that NatGeo got in bed with Murdoch and that never goes well for the truth.

Now, that may all seem like a pedantic aside, but recently National Geographic had to come out and admit that yes, for over a century they’ve been fundamentally racist in their whole product. (See nationalgeographic.com )

Now, as far as so-called “white” America - I’m not really buying into some of the narrative that gets all too easily pushed. Many Europeans brought to this country all sorts of ills, including bigotry. This is undeniable.

But what we see today is something more.

Namely, there have been those who have been intentionally nursing grudges among especially those who lost the Civil War. This has coincided very well another entirely fabricated grievance, namely fundamentalist Christians who can’t accept that their view of the world and life is now reject by modern innovations in thinking, especially in regards to science.

So a multitude of grievances, some partially real, some fabricated, are milked by those (like Rupert Murdoch, who I will repeat is in bed with NatGeo) who know they can make money off the stupidity of others.

re: #56 freetoken

As I have not read the article all the way through yet, I don’t have any other reactions beyond what I already stated. My first thought was, oh yet another “why white people are angry” story, along the lines of “why these hapless yokels voted for Donald Trump.” But that was before I even read the first paragraph. It was cited in a tweet, so I decided to open the link to read it when I had time.

The cynic in me says all this white anguish/anxiety and the rise of neo-confederates and neo-nazis has all been aided and abetted by the right wing noise machine, which has found an easy set of marks to make money off of. IOW if there no people like Rush, Glenn Beck, Laura Ingraham, et alia, telling people repeatedly that white folks are doomed and “others” are taking the whites’ rightful place at the top of the social pyramid, the anguish/anxiety/hatred will be negligible. Now, we not only have this right wing noise machine going full tilt 24/7, we also have a president bent on doing the same thing. There is an alarmingly large cohort who believe down to the bottom of their hearts that the USA was going to hell in a hand basket under Obama — although was opposite was true — and that Trump and the GOP will fix everything — although the opposite is true.

They see everything through the lens of “white America.” The rest of us (meaning Democrats and especially lizardim) see everything through the lens of “America.” To them, Obama being president was confirmation that white America was doomed. To us, it was the culmination of 200+ years of social and political progress and something to be celebrated. It’s a major dichotomy of thought, and I have no idea how we manage to narrow that gap, other than to let these idiots run everything into the ground and then say “I told you so” when they ask why everything went wrong.

I’m not very optimistic even that will work.

DoJ appears it will issue indictments against state backed hackers tomorrow. Deputy Rod Rosenstein announcing. John Demers, head of National Security division. Treasury’s top intelligence official and US attorney for Southern District of NY also present.

That doesn’t come across as “sounding an alarm”……it sounds to me more like Assange is simply making an educated guess. And on this, at least, he’s likely not too far off the mark; it looks like Guccifer 2.0 was a GRU member.

On another note, I skipped Jessica Jones episode 6 by mistake and discovered I didn’t really miss much, as episode 7 was mostly a flashback ep. Going to keep watching even though this season is nowhere near as gripping as the last one.

Point is that Biden made a qualified, hypothetical statement that is being reported and discussed as if it were an actual threat.

It simply reflects the level of public discourse and media reporting in our country.

I have repeatedly mentioned Gary Shtenyngart’s novel “Super Sad True Love Story” from 2010: it describes a dystopian near-future in which the masses are functionally illiterate, they communicate almost entirely through voice and image messaging, books are no longer printed.

And the Dollar has collapsed, the only convertible currencies are the Yuan and Northern Euro.

I am afraid to re-read that book, it is becoming too much of a reality.

I’ve put that on my Amazon wish list. Right now, I’m reading the first of the Altered Carbon books. The TV version took serious liberties with the plot and characters.

Imagine if people like the Mercers or the Trumps could essentially become immortal, by downloading their memories and personalities into a new body whenever the old one wore out. In the book, they’re call “Meths” after Methuselah and have overwhelming power in that universe.

It’s not just what you post, but what pages you visit, what items you like or share — basically everything you do on Facebook is added to their data profile of you. If you use Instagram or WhatsApp, which are both FB apps, that data is collected, too. If you use FB’s oauth credentials to log into a website, *those* visits get cataloged, too.

I do not “like” anything on FB whether I like it or not, and I run no apps. And I learned the trick of copying out the link and accessing it through my browser and not directly.

[Old news to some, I’m sure] I just saw someone who calls herself “Roaming Millennial” on Fox news ranting about gender neutrality at Mt. Holyoke, a women’s college. A quick google search reveals that she’s in the Jordon Peterson/Stefan Molyneux/Ben Shapiro/Milo nexus, while working the Tomi Lahren grift angle through a youtube channel and other social media. But the kicker is that she’s a biracial Canadian (Chinese/White Canadian). On second thought, it’s not that big of a kicker. In one discussion on Sinica podcast there was a brief discussion of outsize support for Trump among Chinese entrepreneurial immigrants—“The American Dream.” It also caught my eye because I have some personal interest in how bi-cultural kids grapple with identity, particularly in a very white-majority area. What a complicated world we live in.

Greets and saluts from the Resistance in the NYC metro area.

Trump’s busy reminding people he’s weak and ignorant as he tweets about DACA and then claims the House Nunes report exonerates him even as GOP members of that committee admit that they were never tasked with actually looking for collusion/conspiracy between Russia and Trump.

Meanwhile, the media focuses on Trump/Biden rumble in the adult day care center instead of the fact that it’s now clear that Russia was behind the DNC hacks that supplied emails to Wikileaks.

Trump also complains that Obama didn’t do enough to stop Russia. That’s rich.

re: #114 dangerman

IMO, if you want a gun, then you should have to do the following:

1) pass a background check. I know that won’t screen out all the bad guys, but it can’t hurt. And there needs to be a consistent national database, not just state level.

2)you need to pass a proficiency and safety test, along with a written test about laws. You have to to get a driver’s license, every gun owner should have to do the same. No license, no guns. That education should also force people to look at pictures and hear testimony from trauma doctors who have to try to fix the damage these weapons cause.

3)Every weapon needs to be registered and titled. If you sell it, then there should be a title transfer. We have the means to do all of this, use the DMV models, if it’s doable for cars, then it should be no problem to do it for guns.

4) Mandatory insurance. Again, I’m repeating myself, but ammosexuals always like to tell us how cars are the real evil weapons of mayhem, so let’s at least put the same restrictions on guns that we have for cars. I have no clue what insurance companies would want to handle this mess, but there should be insurance requirements of some kind.

5) Ban the fucking weekend warrior tough guy shit. No civilian needs semi automatic rifles. Institute buyback programs and have an amnesty period where people can rid themselves of this garbage. Ban online and retail sales of all the fucking fashion accessories (there I said it) like flak jackets and other body armor and other bullshit. After the amnesty is over, it’s jail and/or heavy fines for those who just can’t stop cuddling and spooning with their fucking guns. Open a national hotline where people can turn in their asshole neighbors and family members who just can’t grow the fuck up and be decent citizens.

6) and this is the hard part. There needs to be a consistent, nationwide set of laws here. Not piecemeal bullshit that differs from state to state. That is a big part of the reason why we’re here.

I know none of this is easy, but I have to believe that most people want us to do better and I am goddamned fucking tired of the rest of us being forced to capitulate to the demands of a very tiny portion of the population who has lost their fucking minds.

Agreed.

Morning!

Well, what fresh hell awaits us today?

I see Trump is threatening to veto the omnibus bill. He’s saying the bill does nothing for DACA and fully funding his damn wall. He’s blaming nothing on DACA on the Democrats too.

I guess congress is in a panic because they are mostly out of town thinking he was on board and would sign it. The Republicans have been backdoored by Trump and are worried they look bad.

Note to Republican congress…you always look bad.

So, shutdown Friday?

Yep:

The new poll finds support for specific gun control measures even among those who bristle at the term “gun control.”

“That’s what Hitler did,” said Flora McIntyre, of Simi Valley, California, repeating a common, but inaccurate, line of criticism against gun control measures. “Hitler made everyone register their guns. Then he came and collected all the guns.”

But when asked about specific gun control prescriptions, the 82-year-old retired nurse, who said she owns a rifle and a .44 Magnum, said she favored stronger background checks and limits on the number of bullets allowed in a gun magazine. She also opposes President Donald Trump’s plan to give guns to trained teachers.

It would be interesting to use your question as a basis to do a study of the aftermath of gun violence. Show how something that as you say was bought for protection was turned into tragedy for the gun owner and those affected when the gun was used.

Of course the NRA would throw a fit but ignore them.

A well regulated militia.

Period.

These right wing hoodlums have ignored that.

The NRA ignores it. They treat the 2A as though the entire thing doesn’t exist - only a right of the individual to bear arms with no regulation.

So much for the fucking right wing originalists who claim that they read the Constitution and look to original intent. The original intent was to have a well regulated militia with the right to bear arms. Right now, we have none of that.

Well, other than maybe being able to be hyped up as a distraction (like almost anything: I agree with your assessment), reading the account of the incident in Trèbes, France; it was a nasty, if unremarkable terrorist attack.

(A Moroccan IS-loyal nut ran amok with guns, killed a couple of people in nearby Carcassonne*, carjacked a vehicle and drove to Trèbes where he took hostages at a supermarket demanding the release of another terrorist. Didn’t work, though: the police swarmed in and - eventually - shot and killed him.)

Awful and tragic-for-the-victims as it is, it was no different from a lot of incidents in France (and less-bloody than most): but I supposed that indulging in a paroxysm of Muslim-bashing makes the day for a whole of wingers….

* I’ve been there: it’s a big tourist draw in southern France: I wonder why the terrorist didn’t shoot it up more?

and its easy to see how that logic fails

if you’re at work and the gun’s at home, it should be safely stored because you most certainly are not protecting your home with it if you’re not there

if someone else (your kid) gets his hands on your gun and removes it from your home, it wasnt being used for home protection at that moment either

especially if you didnt even know he took it

nothing onerous here. reasonable man standards.

Some crazy kickback scheme Mercer’s got going, there.

All smoke and mirrors and twisted financial schemes that these people have paid to be written and passed into law. The rest of us can fuck off and hopefully die quickly.

The Gun is essentially the same as the Evangelical Christian God. The Gun is part of the same religion - one of violence, power, racial superiority, and abuse of any not of the tribe. Guns are both a religious talisman, the love of which identifies you as part of the tribe, and a means by which to violently enforce the cultural domination that is the core of the religion.

It is also the magic talisman that defends us against terrorists, home invaders and government tyranny

(Craig’s List):

US Congress just passed HR 1865, “FOSTA”, seeking to subject websites to criminal and civil liability when third parties (users) misuse online personals unlawfully.

Any tool or service can be misused. We can’t take such risk without jeopardizing all our other services, so we are regretfully taking craigslist personals offline. Hopefully we can bring them back some day.

To the millions of spouses, partners, and couples who met through craigslist, we wish you every happiness!

Charles…send those copies off to The Atlantic. Maybe they do not know his full history.

This could turn like the case of Quinn Martin at the New York Times.

I usually do not like people influencing others careers…but you know, sometimes it is the right thing to do. This guy is sleaze…he may have hidden it well enough for this hire.

Trump signed the budget bill into law.

What a dumbass.

He was threatening to withhold signing the budget bill, causing a government shutdown again.

He would have solely been at blame. Congress passed and sent him a bill.

Trump had two choices - sign or not. He chose a third option - threaten not signing it and then looking like a dumbass by backing down and signing it anyways.

He doesn’t know how to negotiate or do basic politics (which is mostly forgotten art of compromise). He thinks he can simply bully Congress - controlled by the GOP no less - into doing what he wants.

That isn’t how any of this works. He still doesn’t get it and he never will.

100% absolutely
if you didnt sell it legally, it’s still yours
liability rests with the last legal owner AND whoever pulled the trigger
make em joint and severably liable

Yeah, yeah, yeah. I find the combination of her reporting and Josh Marshall’s EdBlog posts on Trump to be some of the most useful things for understanding what is going on, both in the White House, and in that head of Trump’s.

I think here she’s addressing the attempt to find some deeper pattern in Trump’s apparently random actions. She’s saying, “No, they really ARE random actions.”

If only Jesus had had an AR-15 he might not have been crucified!

Matthew 26:51-52

51 Suddenly, one of those with Jesus put his hand on his sword, drew it, and struck the slave of the high priest, cutting off his ear. 52 Then Jesus said to him, “Put your sword back into its place; for all who take the sword will perish by the sword.

I’d say Jesus understood weaponry (and overwhelming Roman superiority) just fine.

I have an idea - if Trump thinks Stealth planes are invisible, just TELL HIM we built 100 more, then point to an empty airstrip and say, “There they are!”*

If we need “to lend an air of verisimilitude to an otherwise bald and unconvincing narrative”, hire a mime to ‘walk into’ one of the planes.

Treat him like a toddler. It’s what his staff does.

*Based on the observation in HHGG that it’s so expensive to make something really invisible that it’s a lot cheaper to just not build it in the first place

The last guy in here was wearing an ankle-length denim jacket. With snaps to open so he could straddle his bicycle. If he wasn’t so much taller than me, we could have worked out a trade. He’s going to bring a bike to see if I’m interested.

i had this j peterman duster - it was versatile
you could snap the back center closed all the way down or unsnap and then wrap each side around your legs and resnap

Though there have been a large number of packages marked ‘Acme’ delivered to the White House in the last few years….

Trump is like Wile E Coyote in the later, perfunctory Road Runner cartoons, rather than the one from the earlier, brilliant ones.

Wouldn’t riding a bicycle be hazardous with the coat hanging down around it’s chain, and with the wind pushing the tails back toward the rear gears?
