They’re dealing with the cognitive dissonance by declaring that the problem doesn’t lie with Trump, it’s with Republicans who’ve “betrayed” their base and thus the “populist” movement must remake Congress in his image.

But if you ask them why he signed a bill that he didn’t agree with, you get (at best) a bunch of muttering about how he “had no choice.”

Some of them did, though. You forget how recently the Republicans were attacked by a gunman at softball practice. And yet, these dickheads are still too beholden to the almighty gun lobby to vote against them, despite literally getting shot at. Steve Scalise is, fortunately for him, available for comment.

Well fwiw I was downtown to converse and listen more than photograph or video. I sought out the school aged people, often introducing myself to a Mom or Dad first, asking for permission to take a pic.

None of the kids I spoke to sounded like anti gun nuts. Everyone I spoke to was friendly and reasonable. I did see some echoes of Occupy. Some of the same organizers with immigration or anti Trump groups. Anti Fascist etc. Not Antifa as in black bandanas. Saw some good speakers using the old mic check/crowd repetition of short phrases. That’s a very powerful tool in a crowd.

Humans, by and large, have trouble admitting they’re wrong. Liberals are more likely, but, right now, when a lot of us are wrong, we’re corrected by people on our side, which makes it easier. The Right, right now, is an echo chamber, meaning a large number on the right won’t even believe they could be wrong, and being told by someone outside their tribe just won’t get through.

The Philando Castile incident was a complete fucking travesty. He had a gun and he was shot dead, and the cops were acquitted because they were able to instill reasonable doubt about whether they felt threatened. I thought the wild north country was above that kind of bullshit; for weeks after that, I carried my cell phone openly whenever I saw St. Paul Police on the street, just in case.

Which frankly is a psychological religious thing with conservatism. Liberals are more flexible to that because by ideological nature, we are far more open to admitting past ideological wrongs.

Conservatism is a religion. That is why it doesn’t change and cannot admit it’s wrong.

It has it’s god (Ronald Reagan), its prophets (Goldwater, Buckley, Laffer, &c), its pulpit pimps, its unchanging dogma that can’t be challenged. Inconveniences or contradictions in their theology (Reagan implemented gun control laws in California, Nixon signed the EPA into law, &c) are ignored.

Why not both? Religion is psychological, I’ll go with that. But psychology by itself does not explain saints, acolytes, dogma, &c. Those are features of religions.

Psychology explains why people can be resistant to change, or open to it.

Religion explains statements such as “Conservatism cannot fail, it can only be failed.” It explains why someone is cast out and shunned as a “RINO” if they stray too far from the dogma.

Amory Blaine  Mar 24, 2018 • 8:57:49pm

In field tests, device harvests water from desert air
MIT-developed system could provide drinking water even in extremely arid locations.

The system, based on relatively new high-surface-area materials called metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), can extract potable water from even the driest of desert air, the researchers say, with relative humidities as low as 10 percent. Current methods for extracting water from air require much higher levels - 100 percent humidity for fog-harvesting methods, and above 50 percent for dew-harvesting refrigeration-based systems, which also require large amounts of energy for cooling. So the new system could potentially fill an unmet need for water even in the world’s driest regions.

By running a test device on a rooftop at Arizona State University in Tempe, Wang says, the team “was field-testing in a place that’s representative of these arid areas, and showed that we can actually harvest the water, even in subzero dewpoints.”

The test device was powered solely by sunlight, and although it was a small proof-of-concept device, if scaled up its output would be equivalent to more than a quarter-liter of water per day per kilogram of MOF, the researchers say. With an optimal material choice, output can be as high as three times that of the current version, says Kim. Unlike any of the existing methods for extracting water from air at very low humidities, “with this approach, you actually can do it, even under these extreme conditions,” Wang says.

Not only does this system work at lower humidities than dew harvesting does, says Rao, but those systems require pumps and compressors that can wear out, whereas “this has no moving parts. It can be operated in a completely passive manner, in places with low humidity but large amounts of sunlight.”

Guccifer 2.0 is a Russian Intelligence Officer. Does That Mean Trump Team Colluded?(The Daily Beast)

Sam Nunberg, a former Trump campaign member, has recently stated that during questioning by Mueller’s team, he was asked questions about Stone. It seems likely that Mueller is closely examining the relationship between Stone and Guccifer 2.0, which could provide the link he has been seeking to fulfill his mandate. And if other members of the campaign participated in the decision to release the emails, then they could find themselves named in an indictment along with Guccifer 2.0.

It’s both. The DoI says alter or abolish in that segment.

Yep, but it doesn’t say ‘overthrow.’ Including the possibility of alteration gives a different tone.
I’m hoping that we can get some alterations this fall, and hoping more that these new voters grasp that it’s going to take several election cycles to bend the arc back towards justice. If they see from first-hand experience that their voices and their votes count, maybe they’ll keep voting, and some of them will start running for office as soon as they can.

Ben Shapiro started out as a right wing wunderkind. Same with Ben Domenech. More recently there’s been Jonathan Krohn, Benji Backer and CJ Pearson. The far right is always seeking to find the next articulate young true believer to help convince older conservatives that they aren’t facing intergenerational near extinction.

Canadian ice cream chain “Sweet Jesus” is planning on expanding into the USA.

The chain received a petition by thirty thousand Americans to “change their blasphemous name” before they do.

“The company’s name and logo are seriously offensive,” the petition on Christian site Return To Order says. “The first S in the word Jesus is a lightning strike, reminiscent of the Nazi style used by the SS, [note: actually, no either he’s blind or he’s lying] and the T in “SWEET” is often shown as an inverted Cross on the company’s various products … We cannot remain silent while Our Lord is blasphemed!”

Both Sides Can Laugh by Garfunkel and Oates

LYRICS:

Everyone once in a while you meet a special kind man
A needle in a haystack, a diamond in a pile of shit
A man who’s never written music but thinks he can
A republican crypto currency guy like Dan

Thank you, digital accountant Dan
For explaining how to write a song
I wouldn’t have known to choose a topic
Before you, you, Dan, you came along

Thanks for telling me to write down my thoughts
And send them all to you
So you can make sure it doesn’t offend
The conservative point of view

You say it’s time to pop my liberal bubble
And reach across the aisle
Find levity in relatable things
That can make the red and blue states smile

Because comedy should be inclusive
And connect with the other half
It should make us all feel comfortable
So both sides can laugh

Well, I’m going to take your advice, computer Dan
And write something bipartisan
So here’s my song

VERSE 1:
Don’t you hate it when you’re liberal and you’re stuck in traffic
Now I’m late for my big meeting
Don’t you hate it when you’re conservative and your inlaws are here
Oh brother what’s your mother gonna say
Don’t you hate it when you’re liberal and you lose your glasses
How can I find my glasses without my glasses
Or when you’re a conservative and your gun control policies enable constant, senseless, devastating mass shootings
Isn’t it great when both sides can laugh
Hahahahahahaha

We’re really not that different
We should come together as one
With easy, pleasing, breezy jokes
You know comedy can just be fun

CHORUS:
So let’s all get together
And embrace the other half
With this song
Where both sides can laugh

VERSE TWO:
Don’t you hate it when you’re liberal and a song’s in your head
Maureen I’m not a theater person
Or when you’re conservative and your podcast won’t load
It’ll only play an ad from blue apron
Don’t you hate when you’re liberal and you can’t stop crying
Boo hoo I want civil rights
Or when you’re conservative and your pussy grabbing liar threatens nuclear annihilation on twitter
Isn’t it great when both sides can laugh
Hahahahahahaha

In this time of political turmoil
I should ignore it and be polite
It’s more comfortable for all of us
If I don’t pick between left and wrong

CHORUS:
So let’s all get together
And embrace the other half
With this song
Where both sides can laugh

BRIDGE:
If I want a ceasefire to transpire
Stop preaching to the whining lefty choir
Embrace the climate change denier
Give every joke a qualifier

With harmless, responsible comedy
Where we all feel good about our choices
That recognizes everyone
As equally valid political voices

Comedians should be on the medians
And put a premium on obedience
Be through with mental acuity
Find unity through ambiguity

All this complaining and exaggerating
Is actually just exacerbating
The futility and hypocrisy
Of the left wing aristocracy

Let go of the same old blue shtick
Stop trying to skew shit
I sound like a mouthy shrew chick
Acoustic music isn’t psychotherapeutic

I need to get a clue quick
If I want to accrue new YouTube clicks
Subdue this taboo shit I spew
Find a new, more palatable point of view

Well you underestimated me
Cause I don’t look like the enemy
My tentacles are venom-y
A musical comedy sea anemone

But I should say it’s okay
That no matter the cost, you want your little pistol
And it’s fine that voted for Voldemort
As long as your reasons were purely fiscal
Oh, you’re just greedy, I didn’t realize, that’s fine

CHORUS:
So let’s all get together
And embrace the other half
With this song
Where both sides can laugh

CODA:
What do you think, Dan, how did I do
I can’t believe I used to write songs that had point of view
Being general’s always better for comedy it’s true
Thank god for you, Dan, thank only Christian god for you

Woman crashes her SUV into a cement lamppost to prove to her two small children “God is real” and would protect them from harm if they believed (according to police interviewing the children and the mother). The children said she closed her eyes and accellerated toward the pole across the highway.

She was released on bond, charged with two counts of child cruelty, in Gwinnett County, Ga.

(with video from a surveillance camera and police cameras, 2:13)

“You think she did it on purpose?” the officer asks.

“Yeah because she turned. Her eyes was closed and she was saying, blah, blah, blah, ‘I love God,’” one daughter said. “She didn’t want us to just have a car accident. She wanted us to know that God is real.”

The police credited the seat belts for saving lives.

Unfortunately it is time to look for a new nominee in the 2020 presidential election. Donald Trump didn’t keep his promises and needs to be shown the door in 2021. still can’t believe he signed that spending bill. Please wake me from this nightmare. Trump is now all alone. I fear he will turn to the Democrats for help. Trump just lost congress and will not get re-elected. Conservatives remember. The Republican party is NOT my party anymore. I was raised a Democrat and left. I have voted GOP since 1994. Now that is gone. Just a man with no party. I will not vote for anyone who is not conservative. Period!

Fell down the Wikipedia rabbit hole, and came up with a nice coincidence.

Our textbook has an article about the inventor of the karaoke machine, Daisuke Inoue. In the article, he says his two favorite songs to sing are “I Can’t Stop Loving You” and “Love Is a Many Splendored Thing.” So, I figured I’d find those on YouTube to share with the class.

The second song was the theme for the 1955 movie of the same name, which was based in turn on the 1952 novel, A Many-Splendored Thing, by Han Suyin.

Ms Han was born in 1917 in Xinyang, which is about an hour from here.

Her father was Chinese and her mom Belgium. Han Suyin lived to be 95, was a physician, wrote several books, married three times (to a Chinese, a Brit and an Indian), and had a notable love affair with an Australian journalist between husband 1 and 2. The love affair was the inspiration for the novel and the movie.

Some of my students are from Xinyang, so they might be interested in hearing about her.

The reason the religious right and the gun-nuts have hooked up so strongly is that as the landscape of American politics is changed by increasing those who are not going to accept the passivity required for religious indoctrination, similarly the acceptance of the permanence and infallibility of the 2A will fall away.

In other words, the religious right tries to promulgate the idea that the US’s founding documents are somehow inspired by God and immutable. Strange as that idea would be to traditional (pre 20th century) Protestants and Catholics both, that is where 21st century fundamentalists Christians in America have landed ideologically.

The gun nuts love this because they don’t want to change their own 18th century views about whatever.

Once a citizen understands that the Constitution is just the mutual agreement by all the citizens on how a government should be structured, and is not some sort of divine word, then the idea of changing (even radically) the Constitution is straightforward.

This is why marches like yesterday’s are important. The bandwagon of politics is swayed by masses, and if, as proposed by the gun-fetishists, the 2A means anyone can own whatever they want as far as guns are concerned, then it becomes clear that the Constitution will need to be changed.

And mass marches illustrate the political will is there to do so.

In my opinion, this path was decided long ago, when courts began to interpret the 2A as being about something other than militias. If it had been interpreted as only pertaining to militias then laws controlling individual ownership, and even of production and distribution of certain arms, would have stood, and as a nation we’d be better off today.

I see a lot of common ground and overlap between the NRA and the Religious Right: both are composed of cynical manipulators and gullible masses.

For the RR, it is pulpit pimps taking advantage of people who insist on a subjective, selective and literal interpretation of Scriptures, for the NRA it is weapon merchants and lobbyists who take advantage of people who insist on a subjective, selective and literal interpretation of the 2A.

They have had the upper hand in public discourse by appealing to “American values”. We are seeing that influence erode in the light of recent events, and I can only welcome the changes.

Former Catalan President Carles Puigdemont, sought with an arrest warrant by Spain, has been detained Sunday in Germany, his lawyer announced.

International arrest warrants for Puigdemont, who fled to Belgium in October, and five other fugitive Catalan politicians, were activated by a Spanish judge on Friday amid the recent crackdown on Catalan separatists.

Puigdemont was visiting Finland when the warrant was issued, but both his lawyer, Jaume Alonso-Cuevillas, and Finnish parliament member Mikko Karna, who had invited him to visit, told The Associated Press that Puigdemont left the country on Friday evening.

Karna previously said he believed Puigdemont had returned to Brussels.

America, land of the hyper-religious….

From a website of the (considered mainstream news outlet) Dallas Morning News, we find this article:

These 5 trees take you on a biblical journey of grace and growth

So what? You may ask, pointing out that Texas is full of religious people so of course a Texas newspaper will be full of religion articles.

Except that article is placed under “gardening”.

Gardening.

I always looked at gardening sections to be full of adverts for the local nursery, and seasonal articles on topics such as the need of mulching, how to trim roses, etc.

But not in America. Nope. Gardening sections are for religious indoctrination.

Confessing their end intentions, using a supposed-life story of a young female convert that sounds like it is tightly constructed propaganda, the article ends clearly stating:

Speaker presents plan for Christian school

[…]

Watson proposes making a private school system which is run by pastors, employs some teachers, and relies heavily on community volunteer teachers. This, she said, would run down the cost of running the school, while teaching kids subjects they will find fun and interesting, such as sewing or the second amendment.

Those volunteers would not work 40 hours a week, but rather when they could (once a year, for example), replacing some of the teachers. The school would require 180 people to fill up a year, “free staff,” Watson stated.

The school would start at kindergarten level, siphoning public school students and eventually shutting down one school district. Watson claimed that there is already money to pay for this proposal. She listed statistics for how much money Americans spend on charities, animals, and other amenities a year. If people, instead, invested their money in this system, then it could work and shut down that one district.

They would then encourage students to attend the schools, stating that most parents want their children to attend private schools. This should be the “conservative movement,” Watson said, and all of their energy should be dedicated to this, instead of spread out among several different issues. “The Right” has to focus, and Watson believes that dismantling public schools and instating private Christian schools is a good way to begin.

A different teacher a day?! She’s bug nuts if she thinks that can even work, and even if she can find 180 teachers, the revolving door teacher model will mean the kids will learn absolutely nothing — even less than at a regular fundie school.

We have handed America over to people who think government should be run like a business.

Well, to a business, things like education, health care, work safety and environmental protection are all costs that should be minimized, and not as investments in a healthy, educated and prosperous society.

There are private Sunday schools run by volunteers or paid for by private donations if you want to teach religious indoctrination.

A different teacher a day?! She’s bug nuts if she thinks that can even work, and even if she can find 180 teachers, the revolving door teacher model will mean the kids will learn absolutely nothing — even less than at a regular fundie school.

Do these conservatives secretly huff paint thinner, because they all seem mentally impaired.

Sounds unpractical to say the least. I honestly enjoyed building relationships with my teachers. Even saw one of them yesterday since he’s got a book out and we remembered old times. Conservatives don’t understand how important educators are as role models.

If you’re looking for long-term power and relevance in the U.S., getting on the wrong side of kids, women and racial minorities is probably not the best idea. The NRA understands this. The group has been making left-footed attempts in recent days to show it’s hipper than you think, even featuring NRA spokesman Colion Noir, who is black, taking offense at the white privilege of the kids who survived the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida and have become leaders in the gun-safety cause. Black lives (suddenly) matter; just don’t expect support from the NRA if your black son gets shot by a thug or a cop.

The NRA remains a powerful organization. But it’s less powerful today than it was yesterday. It’s less powerful in 2018 — which has already seen a spate of gun regulations passed, even in gun-crazed Florida — than it was in 2017. Blue states across the nation have been enacting aggressive gun regulations without the slightest fear of the gun lobby. California and Hawaii, two states that look more like the American future than the American past, are among the leaders.

And now the gun lobby is facing a countervailing movement. Anxiety, it turns out, is not the exclusive purview of old white men uneasy about the empowerment of women and the racial composition of the nation. People afraid of being shot, or losing their children, willy-nilly because any fool can get a gun are also anxious. The marches helped ease their symptoms but with a side effect: It caused trembling in the gun lobby.

She’s delusional. Is there a reason we should worry about her idiotic opinion? While a significant percentage of wingnuts are probably nodding their heads to her suggestions, most Americans would recoil in horror at her ridiculous ideas. She doesn’t strike me as a real threat to public education unless Betsy DeVos adopts her way of thinking.

The American Revolution, the 50s and 60s Civil Rights Movement, and now this, if the young don’t take up a cause, there isn’t going to be change. They’re the only group not committed to things like needing to go to work to earn the next paycheck, getting kids to school, etc.

The NRA is seriously rattled by this; they’re getting increasingly shrill and it seems to me like they really don’t know how to respond to this. Added into that is probably the NRA’s fear of a potential Democratic wave election this November and it strikes me they’re genuinely spooked.

Good.

again, they have certain standard tactics of attacking and defaming victims, branding opponents as terrorist sympathizers who would abandon our country to criminals, terrorists and tyranny and then going off on rants about technical details about magazines and clips until the next mass shooting occurs, after which it is “too early to politicize this unfortunate event”

re: #260 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

I see a lot of common ground and overlap between the NRA and the Religious Right: both are composed of cynical manipulators and gullible masses.

For the RR, it is pulpit pimps taking advantage of people who insist on a subjective, selective and literal interpretation of Scriptures, for the NRA it is weapon merchants and lobbyists who take advantage of people who insist on a subjective, selective and literal interpretation of the 2A.

They have had the upper hand in public discourse by appealing to “American values”. We are seeing that influence erode in the light of recent events, and I can only welcome the changes.

Part of what gives the RR their power is that the evangelical subculture is deliberately vehement about restricting information and ideas from outside the bubble. Their children are not allowed to listen to music, or see movies or read books other than what’s sold in Christian bookstores. They’re like the Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, they go out into the world as adults who’ve had no exposure to popular culture for their entire childhood or adolescence.

Good.

The NRA doesn’t fear a Democratic wave. They want Democrats in power - Democrats means more fear, means more gun sales.

This reaction is about power and control, much like most of modern Republicanism. These kids are speaking out against them, so they must be put down and destroyed. This reaction is also about creating a target to be hated, so their cult has something to hate, just like they would if Democrats were in power.

Because the intricacies of campaign financing isn’t as “juicy” a story as “Trump banged a porn star!” Plus they’re still giving him the benefit of the doubt, trying to keep the payoff limited to Cohn in an over-cautionary effort to avoid being “burned” by possible revelations later.

The movement, Gonzalez tells reporters, “is probably gonna be years, and at this point, I don’t know that I mind. Nothing that’s worth it is easy. We’re going against the largest gun lobby. We could very well die trying to do this. But we could very well die not trying to do this, too. So why not die for something rather than nothing?”

When someone holds and lives that belief, there really is nothing that can stop them (not even death, because the movement they spawned would live on). Indeed, what she says reminds me of another young person who took a stand despite the tremendous personal risk:

“How can we expect righteousness to prevail when there is hardly anyone willing to give himself up individually to a righteous cause?” Sophie said. “Such a fine, sunny day, and I have to go,” she continued, “but what does my death matter, if through us thousands of people are awakened and stirred to action?”

re: #414 Targetpractice

The hilarious bit, of course being that if he was pro-gun, they’d be outraged at any suggestion that he looks like a Hitler Youth and whining about being called Nazis.

But he does have awesome cheekbones.

OMG, I’m way too old for that to be an appropriate thing for me to think/say about him.
