Judge denies delay to Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker in calling two special elections

A Dane County judge Tuesday denied Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker’s request for a delay before he has to call two court-ordered special election.

In a late night filing Monday, Walker had asked the judge to allow an extra week so the governor and GOP lawmakers could approve legislation giving him broader powers to determine when to allow voters to fill vacancies in the Legislature.

Circuit Court Judge Richard Niess turned down the request Tuesday, saying he couldn’t take into account a vote by the Legislature before it happens.

Walker and his fellow Republicans want to overturn a court order that he call special elections to fill the seats of two lawmakers who stepped down in December to join his administration.

Hasn’t this been the basic m.o. of Murdoch?

Does the Republican party, and Trump, ever pay for Murdoch to push them on the air?

No.

And since Fox News can be called “entertainment”, it doesn’t matter to election laws.

Hopefully, Rachel can break all that down into simple terminology. Some of this is so complex that regular folks (like me) can’t understand it completely so it goes right over our heads. Thankfully, it won’t go over Mueller’s head or the first rate lawyers he has conducting an investigation into Trump and Russia.

In this case, it’s fairly simple. They can only donate so much to campaigns. But, if they’re willing to take a loss, they can give it to a company who then does work for the campaign. An indirect donation.

re: #12 Patricia Kayden

It’s pretty easy actually. Imagine a situation where if you donate directly to a campaign you have to declare those donations as political. But if you take the same amount of money and “invest” in a company doing data dirty work for said campaign you don’t have to declare it because it’s not “technically” a donation to the campaign. Honestly it sounds like a form of money laundering to a campaign. In the end, the work done by said company you invested in supports the candidate you want.

Mercer “invested” millions into opposition research, dirty tricks, and propaganda, then had CA sell the product to their chosen political campaigns for a fraction of the cost.

After Fatal Uber Incident, Nvidia Defers Autonomous Car Testing On Public Roads

Nvidia today announced that it would suspend its testing of autonomous cars on public roads until it knows what went wrong last week, when a self-driven Uber vehicle featuring Nvidia’s technology struck and killed a pedestrian in Arizona.

The idea of self-driving cars is gaining a lot of traction these days, but the incident in Arizona may put the idea of autonomous cars on hold for a while. On May 18, a Volvo XC90 SUV equipped with Uber’s autonomous vehicle system struck and killed a pedestrian who was crossing the road.

Following the incident, Uber suspended its self-driving testing program in all cities, and earlier today the Governor of Arizona suspended Uber’s right to test automated vehicles in the state pending the NTSB and NHTSA’s investigations.

Uber isn’t the only company affected by this incident; the fatality puts heavy scrutiny on other autonomous car initiatives. Nvidia is currently leading the charge in developing technologies for self-driving vehicles, and it’s not taking the news of Uber’s fatal crash lightly.

Stevens has done a very important service, I think, in putting his opinion on the 2A out there.

Thinking about the Overton Window and such phenomenon, one reason why the Trump hate-right has been so successful is that they don’t moderate themselves. They go whole hog into their hate of this or that (mostly brown people.)

We need a national conversation on doing exactly what Stevens suggests. We need to force the political window far, far away from the the gun-fetishists’ own view of this world, as far as possible.

a national debate or conversation is not likely.
it would have to be two-way and reasonable

right now one side with righteous indignation believes only the other is and can be capable of behaving despicably

and that side thinks any conversation would lead to their losing something

35
freetoken  Mar 27, 2018 • 3:27:41pm

Changing beliefs in a society sometimes takes a long time.

Today, most Americans would agree that we ought not intentionally kill whales (and other cetaceans). Maybe most Americans are not able to articulate the foundational ethics behind this modern belief, but they have it anyway.

But that was not so three centuries ago. Back in the early 18th century, killing whales was still a thing. It’s what people did. It was normal. It was expected for some parts of commerce.

Now, it was not a great social movement that changed that but the change over to fossil fuels that made whales obsolete.

Still, while guns are not the same, since for the gun-fetishists guns have not been surpassed in technology for their fantasies, in other parts of life modern inventions are shining a light on how out of place unchecked gun worship has become.

And that is not going to go away. This ball has been rolling at least since Sandy Hook, that public demonstration over the unconscionable laxity we in America have to gun ownership is really now becoming a political rallying point.

re: #34 dangerman

What Stevens is doing is a bit subversive.

Which might sound strange, given his opinion piece is in the public.

But what Stevens has done is indicative that it is now political relevant for those who have been in governance at the highest level to come out in favor of facing head on the problem that the 2A has become.

The important bit about Stevens is that he represents the old-Republicans, the Republicans before this latest batch (those who cut their teeth on trying to take down Bill Clinton, right up to Trump.)

I don’t know how long it will take, but eventually the public discourse will find itself embracing this idea of putting the 2A in its rightful place, which is not as something sacred, but as now a millstone around America’s neck.

As I’ve written before, I don’t think it had to come this, but the gun-nuts have so built up the 2A into a rallying point that it is now incumbent upon those of us who don’t want to live in the anarchy-of-the-gun to make our voices heard, that fantasies have to fall in order for humans to be saved.

So, this just appeared in my Facebook feed:

startribune.com

The Twin Cities Liberian community’s push for an indefinite extension to a deportation reprieve program for Liberia natives came up short as the Trump administration announced Tuesday it will end the program in 12 months.

The program, Deferred Enforced Departure, DED, offered work permits and deportation protections since 2007, replacing another temporary reprieve program put in place during Liberia’s brutal civil war in the 1990s. The administration for the first time revealed Tuesday that only about 840 people nationally now have work permits through the program, suggesting the impact of its cancellation might be more limited than feared by local Liberian leaders.

Liberians in the metro, which hosts one of the largest West African enclaves in North America, mounted an active lobbying push in recent months to save the program. They argued its cancellation would deal a blow not only to the community but also to local nursing homes and other care facilities, where many Liberians work. Eight of the 10 members of Minnesota’s congressional delegation signed a letter to President Trump urging him to extend the program.

But a Department of Homeland Security official said it was time to wrap up the program, which the official said was intended to provide only a temporary reprieve.

I was surprised to learn of the program, but as I commented to Mrs. Fish, Minneapolis and Saint Paul are sanctuary cities; this is not going to play well here. I would remind Mr. Trump that the wild north country has never been a fan of his shenanigans.

Someone on MSNBC either last night or this morning also mentioned that being the lawyer/law firm that “lost the presidency” wasn’t going to look good on the resume. And then there’s the very real possibility that Trump isn’t being forthright and honest with his attorneys, which makes it hard to defend a client - and in this kind of case can get you caught up as a defendant.

At least with Nixon, he was an attorney and knew how to STFU.

Tribe has the response of someone who isn’t really willing to yield the big stick of politics.

He sounds, and he has struck me this way before, as someone who is playing by old rules.

If Trump has shown political operatives anything it is this: the new rule of American politics is the weaponization of chaos under the guidance of modern-technologies’ ability to shape minds very strongly.

If accommodating the gun-fetishists would have worked it would have done so by now.

How many more decades have to go by before it is evident that deep changes in society have forced this issue?

Before the Civil War, the debate over slavery raged for decades, even from the writing of the Constitution.

Those who wanted to accommodate slave-holders gave ground but guess what, that did not stop slavery.

We need bigger steps, and bolder steps, I am convinced, today about guns and quite a few things.

Tribe will argue that the Constitution already allows for laws about guns but that is clearly not the point.

The point is that the gun-fetishists have already defeated over and over steps that have to be taken.

I am not concerned about a piece of paper.

It is not the literal, paper, Constitution which is the problem.

It is the very large, by the millions, of increasingly fanatical atavists who have dug their heels in so deeply that they are now openly wanting to make our schools into war zones.

This is the problem.

It’s actually quite simple when you look at it, and it goes like this:

[RICH RIGHT WING TOSSER (RRWT) walks into main office of DODGY ANALYTICS (DA).]
RRWT: Hey, you lot in DODGY ANALYTICS! Do you want to help me do this *special job* I need to do in [insert country here], only I need to *wink wink* do it for less than $[under whatever the election law allows in your quaint country]?
DA Rep: Sounds interesting! Let’s talk!
RRWT: Cool. Oh, and by the way, we want to invest 15 million dollars in your company.
DA Rep: Oh, nice! Thanks! Anyway, that *special job* you were talking about… *wink wink*

ORLANDO, FLORIDA — New court filings in the legal case against Noor Salman, the widow of Pulse Nightclub shooter Omar Mateen, have revealed that the gunman’s father was a confidential FBI informant for over a decade, up until the very same month that the deadly shooting took place. The stunning revelation has again placed the role of FBI in domestic terror attacks under scrutiny, especially after the recent school shooting in Parkland where the FBI repeatedly ignored dozens of warnings about the shooter prior to the tragedy.

OT, but a somewhat bizarre experience related to LGF. Two or three days ago, several zards were discussing their communications, or more often lack of communication, with their exes. This led me, for the first time I can remember, to google my ex-wife, with whom I hadn’t exchanged a word since our divorce became final more than twenty-five years ago. One of the first results was her obituary, from a couple of years back. Neither her family members nor my friends in our old town had told me.

It was, and is, a very strange feeling. We were both prideful, maybe too much so, but even if you never expect to speak with a former lover again, when the final gun sounds, you still wish that the game could go on a little longer.

Oof, “strange feeling” is exactly the words I would use to describe that. I would have been a little put out that nobody told me, to be honest. I get that exes are often excoriated amongst the other family, but still, it seems like common courtesy to contact someone who was, at one point, a major part of the deceased’s life. Unless, that is, said person is a raging psychopath, but you hang out with us so you can’t be that bad.

Interesting post by Ezra Klein about Charles Murray, Sam Harris, and the fact that Murray’s ideas aren’t so much ‘forbidden scholarship’ as they are a well-worn argument against racial equality going back 4 centuries.

But what really strikes me about Murray and his work is not just that it’s racist, and not just that Murray doesn’t realize that it’s racist, but just that it’s not very good work.

Murray is hopeless, he’s spent his entire career in the pocket of right-wing orgs, arguing that people aren’t worth public investments. He will never be anything different. I still hold out some hope for Harris. He has a couple of gigantic blind spots on Islam and progressive activism, but he still seems capable of learning.

I still hold out some hope for Harris. He has a couple of gigantic blind spots on Islam and progressive activism, but he still seems capable of learning.

Murray starts from the assumption that The Market, Meriticracy, etc. all work how he wants to believe they work, and that any deviation from letting The Market work as it will is a bad thing that will produce bad results.

But I was especially taken by a paragraph Ezra quoted from Murray:

MURRAY: If you go back to some of my earliest published stuff on affirmative action — you can go back to 1994, when I did an article for the New Republic in which I was talking about the mismatch problem — a lot of that is, how would I feel if I were a black kid my age going into college and everybody thought I was there because I was an affirmative action kid? I would hate that. I would really hate it. How would I feel if, on the job, I knew that everyone assumed that I got that job because of affirmative action? I would hate that. And I would try to do my best to prove them wrong, but I find that morally repugnant.

So, we can’t address systemic racism, because people will think black people didn’t earn their way, and those black people would hate that? Maybe the problem isn’t the black people in this scenario. Pretty sure Murray never considered that.

re: #144 whitebeach

I was involved in that conversation here. You caused me to look up my ex-wife (which I haven’t done before, because meh).

That yielded the obituary for her mother from three years ago. (Of note, her mother was the only person in my ex-wife’s family who still liked me after the divorce.)

No one notified me (for obvious reasons).

Watched the first two episodes of the continuation of Roseanne; so far, aside from the political stuff in the first episode (which did have some plot purpose between Roseanne and Jackie), it feels like the series never really left, just that everyone’s gotten twenty years older, with all of the stuff that goes with such a passage of time. After the exposition of the first episode bringing the Connors well into the 21st century, the second episode felt like classic Roseanne to me.

As long as Roseanne, the producers, and ABC let the writers do their thing without unneeded interference, like Joss Whedon and Chuck Lorre (and others not as famous) were able to do when they were writing for the original run, I think it might just be really good.

To each their own, I suppose.

I was definitely cringing going in due to the advance buzz, but aside from the first few minutes and a scene between Roseanne and Jackie toward the end of the first episode (and even that scene made sense in the historical context of their relationship as sisters), I was surprised; as long as the writing gets/stays strong, this may just be one of the few times in recent TV/movie history that a reboot/continuation actually doesn’t suck.

I never water my lawn. Luckily anymore we get too much rain here in Ohio and it hasn’t been all that dry in the heat of summer. I hate seeing lawn sprinklers around these parts. I say let nature dictate the landscape, it all fits in better that way.

I never water my lawn either, though many of my neighbours (and the church across the street and the park kitty-corner from my house) all have irrigation systems. My neighbour to the north xeroscaped his yard (it is now all pebbles and native plants to the short grass prairie).

My neighbors all do this as soon as their lawns are cleared of snow (in fact, come to mention it, I’m surprised I’ve not heard any lawnmowers in my neighborhood as the snow has been receding). Many of the residents here in town are retired folk who sit around at home all day with their dogs. I think getting out on the lawn mower gives them hope for the change of spring, getting out of the house instead of being snowbound.

If that’s the Ogallala aquifer to which you refer, it is being depleted at an alarming rate and could be pumped dry in 50 years.
Just sayin’.

The south end (Texas, Oklahoma, and southern Kansas) is depleted, and may replenish in four hundred years or so.

The north half (Nebraska and South Dakota) is heavily regulated (our irrigation systems here have water meters on them). Our end of the Aquifer is actually higher than average. (We can see that here where I live: The valley the North Platte River flows through actually cuts below the Aquifer, thus the level of the river is the level of water in the Aquifer. I can also see it when I test the village wells for drawdown.)

Don’t know if this has been posted:

How Trump favored Texas over Puerto Rico

No two hurricanes are alike, and Harvey and Maria were vastly different storms that struck areas with vastly different financial, geographic and political situations. But a comparison of government statistics relating to the two recovery efforts strongly supports the views of disaster-recovery experts that FEMA and the Trump administration exerted a faster, and initially greater, effort in Texas, even though the damage in Puerto Rico exceeded that in Houston.

Within six days of Hurricane Harvey, U.S. Northern Command had deployed 73 helicopters over Houston, which are critical for saving victims and delivering emergency supplies. It took at least three weeks after Maria before it had more than 70 helicopters flying above Puerto Rico.

Nine days after the respective hurricanes, FEMA had approved $141.8 million in individual assistance to Harvey victims, versus just $6.2 million for Maria victims.

During the first nine days after Harvey, FEMA provided 5.1 million meals, 4.5 million liters of water and over 20,000 tarps to Houston; but in the same period, it delivered just 1.6 million meals, 2.8 million liters of water and roughly 5,000 tarps to Puerto Rico.

Nine days after Harvey, the federal government had 30,000 personnel in the Houston region, compared with 10,000 at the same point after Maria.

It took just 10 days for FEMA to approve permanent disaster work for Texas, compared with 43 days for Puerto Rico.

Seventy-eight days after each hurricane, FEMA had approved 39 percent of federal applications for relief from victims of Harvey, versus 28 percent for Maria.

Those imbalances track with another one: the attention of President Donald Trump. In public, Trump appeared much more concerned with the victims of Harvey than Maria. He visited Houston twice during the first eight days after the hurricane, but didn’t visit Puerto Rico for 13 days. In the first week after the disasters, Trump sent three times as many tweets about Harvey as Maria — 24 about the plight of Texas and eight about Puerto Rico, including a series of comments about Puerto Rico’s debt level and quality of infrastructure that local officials considered insulting and enraging while lives were still in jeopardy.

politico.com

This is infuriating. Ok, so some of the data are without the proper context (instead of absolutes, I would have preferred to see a per thousands or per millions comparisons), and others are to be expected (mobilizing helicopters is a tough challenge to an island). The discrepancies on money spent, and wait time are insulting.

Scott Pruitt’s attempt to wreck the EPA:

The Environmental Protection Agency is considering a major change to the way it assesses scientific work, a move that would severely restrict the research available to it when writing environmental regulations.

Under the proposed policy, the agency would no longer consider scientific research unless the underlying raw data can be made public for other scientists and industry groups to examine. As a result, regulators crafting future rules would quite likely find themselves restricted from using some of the most consequential environmental research of recent decades, such as studies linking air pollution to premature deaths or work that measures human exposure to pesticides and other chemicals.

The issue with this is that a lot of EPA studies are based on human medical records, you know, stuff that is required to be private by other laws.

The operative words being “for other scientists and industry groups to examine.” In other words, Pruitt is trying to not only make it harder for the EPA to conduct research, but easier for industry-funded hitmen to attack the integrity of what research is conducted.

I grew up in a place that, to this day, fucking worships firearms. My dad, a competition shooter himself, taught me to use weapons from childhood although, to my complaints of injustice, didn’t allow me to have my own gun until I was twelve. Over the years I have gone in small steps from the notion that we didn’t need any form of gun control to the realization that this was idiotic. My current position is that all semiauto weapons should be illegal, along with all large-capacity magazines, and of course any transfer of a firearm should require a serious background check and a waiting period of not days but months. And other stuff too. I seriously doubt that all the armies in the world combined possess as many firearms as private American citizens own. Why is this?

One of our village board members suggested that a couple years ago. He is no longer on the village board.

Over in the next county to the east, the county seat sold its city-owned water system to a corporation on promises that they could maintain it more efficiently. Their water costs now are about five times higher than ours. That company is trying to sell bottled water, but is being opposed by the city council (that wasn’t in the agreement). Unfortunately, it’s a big corporation against a city of 800.
