NYT Report: Trump’s Lawyer Offered to Pardon Manafort and Flynn to Keep Mum

Politics • Views: 36,537

This looks very bad for Trump’s former lead counsel John Dowd: Trump lawyer floated idea of pardoning Manafort and Flynn.

Washington (CNN) — President Donald Trump’s lawyer, John Dowd, floated the possibility last year with lawyers for former national security adviser Michael Flynn and former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort that the President might issue pardons for both men, The New York Times reported on Wednesday, citing three individuals with knowledge of the discussions.

The conversations happened as special counsel Robert Mueller “was building cases against both men,” the Times reported, which raises “questions about whether the lawyer, John Dowd, was offering pardons to influence their decisions about whether to plead guilty and cooperate in the investigation” into Russian interference in the 2016 election.

Imagine my shock and surprise that everyone involved in this story is vigorously denying it. But it strongly suggests there was more behind Dowd’s departure from Trump’s legal team than first reported, and if it can be proven it means potential legal and/or ethical issues for Dowd — and for our so-called president, if he directed Dowd to float this offer.

Jesus fucking Christ, that is not how you do this.

You ask them if they’re going to cooperate or if they’re going to stay quiet. You remind them that the president will take care of them, it might not be right away, but he will stand by his guys. They get convicted, they do a couple years, and then in the middle of the night, Trump issues the pardons because he fucking can. That’s how you do this.

Have none of them ever seen Goodfellas or the Godfather?

If they got pardoned, though, doesn’t that mean they can be compelled to testify? I’m confused about how this was supposed to work.

Hoarse Whisperer calls this ‘Stupid Watergate,’ but I’m more inclined to call is ‘Stupid Goodfellas.’

They wanted to be a crime family, but they just weren’t smart enough.

And that accepting a pardon, especially a presidential pardon, is legally equivalent to admitting guilt.

We’ve had this debate before, I lean more towards that being dicta. A president can issue a blanket, unconditional pardon, which means that a person need not admit guilt. It’s one of the few truly unrestrained powers in the Constitution.

A bunch of Nixon’s people probably thought they had pardons coming if they’d just quietly accept their sentence rather than turn… but OOPS!! Suddenly he wasn’t president anymore, and the pardons didn’t happen. G Gordon Liddy, I’m looking at you…

(also, Robert Bork didn’t end up getting what he’d been promised either.)

Just paged this - Ecuador is saying that it’s about Assange and the arrest of a Catalonian separatist leader … but I’m guessing that the uniting of Europe behind Britain in the wake of the Skripal poisoning probably has a lot more to do with it.

Ecuador is in an extremely precarious position economically. Their funds run through European banks. Most of those banks are located in London.

Say what you will about the Brits, their bankers are extremely good at having sinister, threatening, oblique conversations …

“So, Señor Izcarraga, we’ve been noting a great deal of activity in and out of certain accounts in our banking system. We’ve shared that data with our friends in the EU, and in the US and around the world, and it appears that there are the most unfortunate circumstances … “

Getting back to the current problem in our society of right-wing fundamentalist Christians and their love of totalitarianism in the name of Je$u$:

Taylor University Still Shaken by Unsanctioned Conservative Newspaper

A month later, Taylor University is still buzzing about an underground publication, Excalibur, which claimed the evangelical college was becoming more liberal on sex, immigration, and race.

[…]

In their debut newsletter, Excalibur promoted the conservative and orthodox Christian values its writers believed were being replaced by more politically and theologically liberal views among Taylor’s student body, campus speakers, and faculty publications.

The anonymous articles decried “permissive views of human sexuality, hostility toward creationist perspectives, rejection of the rule of law (especially on the immigration issue) and uncritical endorsement of liberal-progressive ideas.”

Excalibur advocated for a “conservative-libertarian approach to race relations” over “incessant calls for social justice, diversity, and equality,” likening the push for social justice to the false prophets warned about in Scripture (John 10 and 2 Peter 2). […]

Now, the president of the university condemned the letter (read the article), but the atavists have their supporters. One group (mostly recent graduates) write, with too many words and too little meaning, an attack on the president for his harsh words for the publication:

An Open Letter to President Haines and the Taylor University Board of Trustees

The lunge towards redefining “Christianity” in America as a type of ethno-nationalism based on right-wing ideology is where we are at in 2018, in the Trump-epoch.

After ten years of reading every email no matter what time they came in, I got wise and just closed the mail client down after 5 on weekdays and every weekend.

It’s just the internet. Unless it’s an absolute barn-burner, it can wait.

Something completely off topic. I’ve alway had a thing for torchy singers. Julie London was smokey ….I remember seeing this movie as a kid and sitting right up. I later forgot all about her.
Today I thought of her again. And I dug this up. Great movie. Great scenes.
I can smell the smoke.

I used to be driven to respond to emails instantaneously, in the name of “being a good consultant/employee” and trying to provide good customer service. After an incident which ended in a work-related phone call as Mrs. Fish and I were supposed to be getting dressed up to go out for our wedding anniversary on a Saturday night, I started modifying that expectation. Nowadays, I’m perfectly comfortable with leaving emails for the next morning - if you can’t get it to me by the time I leave the office, it’s clearly not important. Work stops when I climb into my car.

Off-topic, but of interest maybe to those who served in the Vietnam War.

The Navy Exchange, BX, and PX are offering a 50th anniversary lapel pin to commemorate veterans who served in the Vietnam War. (This is only for Vietnam vets, not Gold Star Family members or other veterans.)

They are available on March 29 at a large number of Exchanges. They are also available throughout the country through partner organisations and businesses.

vietnamwar50th.com (includes link to pages showing participating Exchanges and partner organisations throughout the country)

The President signed into law last year an act recognising National Vietnam War Veterans Day.

Most states and territories will release proclamations, hold events, &c.

Given the nature of my former employer, there were some crises that were “my” crises, as in, if I don’t take care of them, the client fires us, and then my boss fires me. For example: Their production system goes down completely, I should make a best-effort attempt to respond in a timely fashion. If it’s literally anything else, I was perfectly justified in waiting until the morning.

Ayup.

There was one client that took to calling my personal number at all hours of the day (and sometimes of the night) if they had an issue, or a question, or a request, or really just anything having to do with the project. I started screening calls from them and passing the information off to my project partner when we were available to deal with it, and we’d set up a scheduled call with that client later. The calls eventually stopped.

That’s in the USA. In Commonwealth countries “sleet” means “mixed rain and snow,” so Canada uses “ice pellets” to describe the condition.

Definitely. They would have been able to recruit the best from the Obama Administration, and even some younger members of the Clinton Administration. The Obama ones would have been scandal-free and competent. The Clinton ones would have been battle-hardened and also experienced. Result, no Drama Clinton.

I remember that Bush people were warned away from the Trump Administration by someone who tried to go through the transition and experienced the chaos and bad vibes.

re: #158 HappyWarrior

I’m trying to wonder about a Clinton or Sanders cabinet. Both would be more stable than this crap show.

I’m guessing there might have been some hold over from Obama’s cabinet, or cabinet members running new departments. Baker went from Treasury to State (with some time off between) when HW Bush succeeded Reagan. Nicholas Brady was Reagan’s last appointment at Treasury and he stayed on through the Bush Administration. Also looks like Reagan’s last AG stayed on for a while too.

So I suspect there would have been something similar if Clinton would have won. And maybe this would be about the time that you’d see those holdovers looking to move on.

But it’s an entirely different thing to see so many cabinet members (and White House staff) serving for so short a time in the early days of an administration. Usually you see people serving short term near the end of an administration as people are moving on.

If he wanted them, I’m guessing Sanders would have been able to get the best Democratic minds in his administration. The question though, is whether he’d have wanted them or if he’d have been a lefty version of Trump.

I’m also really curious who Sanders’ VP pick would have been. And if the party would have stepped in if he tried to go way off the reservation (a la McCain allegedly wanting Lieberman in ‘08).

First, because he said this in his ridiculous press appearance about the yam’s fabulous physical condition:

I see he’s admitted he wants a politicized USSC.

The Supreme Court, to a varying degrees, has always been political in nature. There’s a reason Adams appointed Marshall at the last minute. There’s a reason why FDR threatened to pack the Court. There’s a reason why there’s a myth that Eisenhower allegedly called Warren’s appoint his greatest mistake. There’s a reason why, every four years, we hear about how this is the most important election of our lifetimes because the Supreme Court hangs in the balance.

The Court, because it is reactionary (in the sense that it doesn’t seek out issues but rather has cases brought to it), tends to have to consider the far reaching impacts of its decisions. Unlike Congress, which can pass “fix it” bills to correct issues that arise from new laws, the Court can’t just go back the following term and say “oh, that’s not what we meant.” In that way, to paraphrase Sotomayor, the courts are a place where policy is crafted.

re: #76 Quoth the raven, Covfefe.

It depends a lot on the sender. Some senders are very conscious, and only email/call on emergencies. Others … there’s a reason I am now picky about who I give my phone.

The last I heard Arpaio was trying to get his conviction overturned because the pardon shows he didn’t do anything wrong. If anyone is up to date on this I’d like to hear about it.

I hate being on the same side as Arpaio, but it was an unconditional pardon and the issue of whether one admits guilt in an unconditional pardon is not settled law.

Imagine a bad jury convicts someone on questionable evidence. Appeals are exhausted and based on previous case law the appellate courts can’t displace the decision of the jury, even though most judges find the evidence questionable at best. A president could then step in and say that it was a miscarriage of justice and pardon the defendant. It would be another miscarriage of justice to tell someone wrongfully convicted that they still must admit guilt in order to accept the pardon.

Yeah—they’ve all already risen to their levels of incompetence.

Nina can move out of Ohio. I’d settle for that.

Totally OT, but my child’s clarinet teacher today said “he’s doing great at improvisation, but if he keeps playing with CDs he’ll just play variations on the solos. You should get Band in a Box. It will allow him to create segments of songs in different styles with bass, guitar and drums, and he can loop it to practice over and over.”

Anyone have any experience with Band in a Box? I’m looking at the cheapest version for Mac (2017 for $100). Better (cheaper) alternatives?

Oh gosh, BG, I’m going out on a limb here because I don’t know a thing about Band in a Box or any of that. But I did play a little back in the day and my brother was a pro musician for twelve or fourteen years, and still does gigs now and then. And what I would suggest is to get the kid around real live musicians playing real live music as much as possible. If I had a boy who played an instrument like clarinet, I’d take him to Preservation Hall every chance I got.

Walker was trying to go to court in order to get an emergency stay pending the passing of that law. These decisions basically amounted to the court saying, “We’re not going to let you tie this up with your bullshit legislation and the related court challenges, just hold the goddamn elections.”

I saw Hillary in South Carolina before the primary in 2016. What your friend said is true. The setting was small, a grade school gymnasium. But the contrast between her stump speech and answering questions from the crowd was night and day. She was fantastic in the Q&A and equally fantastic staying behind to let people take pictures with her.

My mom, who donated to Hillary in 2008 turned on her in 2016 like she had bought all the Fox propaganda despite never watching Fox. She was too ambitious, had no integrity, emails!, etc. Mom claims she’s a Democrat but would have voted for Kasich instead.

Been there.

I remember sitting around the studio with my two photographer mates talking about the future of digital. Two of us were reasonably computer savvy and could see that it was only gonna get bigger, better, and cheaper fast. Very fast.

RIP Kodak. I forget who the writer was, but he or she hit the nail on the head: All those years, Kodak thought they were in the film business, but they could have survived and prospered if they’d ever realized that they were actually in the image business.

The problem is that women are treated differently from men. When Hillary was strong, the media criticized her as shrill. It may be just that we are handicapped by our vocal range. Of course, she was also mistreated by misogynists like Matt Lauer. And the MSM certainly attacked her in ways that they did not attack Trump.

I’m envious of you folks who like Doctor Who.

I generally enjoy science-fiction and am always looking for new content (novels, movies, etc.), but try as I might, I can never get into that show. For whatever reason, it just refuses to draw me in.

But on the topic of sci-fi, I highly recommend the “Culture” series of novels by Ian M. Banks. I’ve seen it described as “space opera for liberals.” I don’t know about that. All I know is that I love the series.

I have to admit, it’s a unique taste. I’ve met Whovians and non-Whovians and it’s really just a matter of what you look for in a sci-fi show. Doctor Who is whimsical and almost cartoonish and less of a space opera than a space comedy.

Virginia Republican kicked out of party leadership after claiming only Christians are fit to hold public office.

washingtonpost.com

With Republicans in Virginia still reeling over a wave of Democratic victories in the fall, Burgos faced a backlash last month from party leaders when he posted a Facebook comment saying that only Christians are fit to run for office.

The comment was viewed as anti-Semitic because Burgos had been campaigning for Tim Hannigan in his successful bid over Mike Ginsberg, who is Jewish, to become the party’s committee chair in Fairfax County.

Burgos, who campaigned for Hannigan under a “Make Fairfax Great Again” motto, claimed his comments were taken out of context. He did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

So here’s the thing about the Roseanne reboot. I’m not really interested in supporting any artists who voted for/admire Republicans, let alone President Racist Grandpa. (That being said, my favorite singer performed at the RNC in 2012. It broke my heart, but I am still a big fan of his.) It’s problematic, to say the least. But I can and do on occasion support such artists. That’s not THE issue.

I loved the original show, I love a lot of the actors, especially Laurie Metcalf. I could ignore the Roseanne problem except—

The show is contributing to the normalization of Trump. I don’t care if you take the Roseanne character seriously, or you are laughing at her. Our so called President is getting a free infomercial and getting normalized with every minute he is mentioned on the show. That’s the problem. And that’s why I will not watch the show.

I’m also extremely fond of the Vorkosigan series of books by Louis McMasters Bujold. The problem is playing against actual people. Playing against the training bots, I can handle that. But playing against a real person turns my anxiety level up too high.

Of course, the think I like the most is the endorphin rush you get from opening a new card pack, and the only ways to get those are to play against humans or to spend actual money on card packs, and I’m not (quite) dumb enough to spend money on cards in a computer game…

Oklahoma state senate approved an array of state tax hikes to avert a teachers’ strike.

thehill.com

NBC News in Tulsa reported that the Senate approved a package to raise taxes on cigarettes, fuel, lodging and oil and gas production. The body approved the bill by a 36-10 vote.

The Oklahoma House already passed the plan, which is expected to produce roughly $450 million to fund teacher raises. The bill next heads to the governor for consideration.

Public school teachers had been planning a statewide strike in response to stagnating wages. Oklahoma teachers are reportedly among the lowest-paid in the nation.

If you want, tag me in a PM and later I can follow up, if you’d like to link up over battle.net and we can play together. I haven’t played since it launched and I guarantee you can probably kick my ass.

I’m not sure anything would help. Even playing against people I know in other games gets me nauseous. And you’re almost certainly better than I am. I played four games yesterday, lost three, and only won the one because the opponent conceded after four turns. I even get pulverized by the bots. :(

Yeah, I do hear you on that first point. -Off Topic- Roseanne Reboot

I find nothing funny about what’s happening in our country and I don’t need TV shows to impress upon viewers how cute and normal it is to support our so called President.

You know, in the first episode, neither Trump nor Hillary were ever mentioned by name and Jill Stein (the only one who was mentioned by name) became a punchline on national TV. After that, nothing else political was said in the rest of the first episode or in the entirety of the second episode, it was just standard Roseanne.

re: #403 Eventual Carrion

These lovers of the Constitution.

US Constitution Article 6, Clause 3

The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the Members of the several State Legislatures, and all executive and judicial Officers, both of the United States and of the several States, shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to support this Constitution; but no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States.

When I was first prepared to take up my seat on my village board after the special election, I sent a query to the county prosecutor/attorney asking about the clause in the Nebraska constitution that requires swearing an oath to God to take up a public office, noting I am an atheist (though I think he knew that already). He inquired of the state attorney general, who issued what amounted to a “special dispensation” to me to make an affirmation of office instead of an oath.

(I was prepared to sue if I was denied my rightful seat on religious grounds.)

The issue didn’t come up again when I was reëlected. (I wondered how Ernie Chambers got around that issue in the state constitution … probably the same sort of query.)

It is the backlash against the “stranger danger” issues where conservatives were convinced someone was lurking to kidnap your child and you have to watch him or her all the time (see also helicopter parents).

“Free range child” movements are simply pushing for children to be allowed to be children as we were.

I disagree, I think they have gotten the current-events politics out right at the beginning (and it wasn’t even that much, TBH); I wonder how much of the hate toward the Roseanne revival is because Roseanne herself is so shitty IRL and not because the show itself is bad (because, for 95% of the hour it was on last night, it wasn’t bad at all and was pretty much classic Roseanne, just up-to-date).

I seriously doubt that Goodman, Gilbert (who, in addition to her host and producer duties for The Talk, is also a producer on this), Metcalf, and Galecki would have come back to do this if they thought it was going to hurt their careers.

There is no place in the USA that is “safe.” Recall Jessica Ahlquist, of Rhode Island, a state explicitly founded as a colony respecting religious freedom (a radical idea before the Revolution) was called an “evil little thing” by a state representative, threatened by classmates, slandered by teachers, &c.

All because she asked about removing a prayer banner at the site her graduation would be held (using school district money).

It was about a mile or so from my house to the high school so it really wasn’t that bad. On more cold and icy days, I’d get a ride from my Dad since he was working evenigns in that time. The middle school was gosh 3-4 miles looking at it on Google Maps. I never walked to the Middle School but I did walk home a few times since there was a McDonalds nearby the Middle School and sometimes when we stayed after school to work on our shop projects or got extra help, we’d skip the late buses and go to McDs and then just walk home. Oh I forgot Dinesh how you completely dismissed the Obama stories. Wait, you happily promoted them. And there’s a difference between Obama’s character and Trump’s when it comes to sleeping around.

D’Souza thinks it’s okay for himself and for Trump to cheat on their wives — but how dare that dastardly Obama remain faithful to his wife!

Did all this before I got my cell. I don’t know how I did it.

I went to go look it up, it was actually a 2.8 mile walk from school to home. For someone who liked to be alone, it was actually a nice walk.

And my junior high school has been replaced by an elementary school.

re: #447 retired cynic

I heard on NPR today that he thought that the swearing in ceremony when he joined the military granted him citizenship, and his officers in the service did not educate him otherwise. ?

Many people, including regular citizens, believe serving in the military grants citizenship. That would be “Starship Troopers,” not the USA.

Officers wouldn’t know about it unless the military member in question told those officers he or she was an undocumented immigrant.

Numerous veterans have been deported when found by ICE. (There is a support organisation for US veterans deported from the country based in Mexico.)

deportedveteranssupporthouse.org

The mission of the Deported Veterans Support House is to support deported veterans on their path to self-sufficiency by providing assistance in the realms of food, clothing, shelter and resource centers as they adjust to life in their new country of residence. We advocate for political legislation which would prohibit the deportation of United States service personnel, both former and current and repatriation to the country they were willing to die for.

I’m in the job-hunting boat, too — two years without a job so far, and yesterday I had my first phone interview in months.

And part of my problem with jobs is that I’ve specialized in social media and writing press releases, both of which don’t give you the option of not being in contact with humans. :)

Oh, wow. That’s tough for an introvert. I wish you the best of luck, and if there’s anything I can do to help there, let me know. I’m much more fortunate in that I’ve only been out of work for a month.

D Souza made a DVD accusing Obama’s mother of being a porn star.

Which he’s perfectly fine with now, of course.

No, I got your point, which a couple of others also expressed last night; you’ve prejudged the show, perhaps a bit unfairly IMO, based on the advance talk and on Roseanne’s personal odiousness and decided to vote with your remote/wallet, which is your right. However, if you liked “classic” Roseanne, I think that you’d be missing out on something that may just “catch lightning in a bottle”.

I read an interview with her in the NYT, and this reboot seems like it could be interesting

It was a neat walk since the walk from the middle school, you passed all sorts of commercial places. A bummer that my go to place for baseball cards had closed down before then. My high school walk was nice. It went through the creek at the lower end of the neighborhood. I really enjoyed that walk especially once I got an iPod.

I lived on the north side of Abilene for most of the the first 13 years, in the part that jutted up against the industrial part of town (next to my grandmother’s house, a half a block from ours, was a junk yard. Doing the street walk just now, not a whole lot has changed out there.

Thanks to google, I can show you what the house I lived in looks like now: google.com. My dad and grandfather built the living room with the bay window.

My brother, sister, and I were the only white kids on the block. There was talk here about ICE being recent. Prior to ICE they were called INS, Immigration and Naturalization Service. They would make periodic runs out in my neighborhood, especially to a house at the end of the block. I still remember names of the two kids who where close to my age that lived in that house. That house got so bad that Habitat for Humanity build them a new house.

You made me go all nostalgic for a place I have been happy to stay away from.

Holy cheese, I was *born* in Abilene! Very few memories of the place, because we moved when I was five. But I still remember the zoo, the amusement park that used to be across the street from it, and the grocery store. And on a trip back a few years ago, I actually recognized the preschool I went to, which was a weird thing to remember…

Funny story: me and my brother went to Maui to see String Cheese in 2002. We went on a whale watching trip with a bunch of other Cheese heads. My brother lost our weed when we went snorkeling, because of course he did.

We were on the top deck of the catamaran headed back to Maui when a guy climbed up the ladder and goes, “Umm I found this film canister when I was snorkeling, did anybody lose their stash?” I said my brother did, thanks, and the boat broke out in applause.

I fuckin’ love hippies.

The zoo was amazing when I was there. Of all the zoos I’ve been to since - mind you I haven’t been to a lot - only the Ft. Worth Zoo reminded me of it. The zoos in Dallas, and Virginia Beach, seemed small by comparison.

Mr. Swan, lobbyist, is wrong. The GOP will rubber-stamp his approval if they can.

They have wanted to tear apart the VA for a long time: as the largest medical system in the USA, and written up on numerous occasions as one of the best, it stands in direct opposition to conservative faith that socialised medicine is necessarily bad.

Conservatives will throw all us veterans under the bus for their religious dogma of “free markets are always better.”

I really liked the Ft. Worth Zoo when I’ve visited there, mostly for their aquarium and insect room. But I generally prefer smaller zoos — my favorites are in Clovis, New Mexico and Garden City, Kansas, of all places. :)

With one year to go before Brexit, Conservative Prime Minister Theresa May says she will keep the United Kingdom “strong and united” while making a tour of the country.

The politicking is getting intense in the UK, with former politicians weighing in … former Prime Minister Tony Blair suggested MPs should vote their convictions, even if they go against the party’s wishes.

Wales and Scotland accuse her of a power grab in asking for devolved powers from Brussels be given to Westminster rather than those countries.

She also says there will be no internal customs division between Great Britain and Northern Ireland, while simultaneously maintaining the border to the Republic of Ireland will remain free. (Good luck with all of that.)

re: #442 TedStriker

This clip

Roseanne and the State Rep

is an example of why it freaked people out so bad to think of Roseanne as being a Trumperroid.
