It looks like I was right, Cohen’s legal teams’ official narrative is now that he perpetrated a fraud upon the Court.

According to Daniels/Clifford, he called her multiple times, and some of those times, others would listen in on their conversations. I’d like to know what was discussed between the two of them besides his allegedly offering her a condo and/or an appearance on his POS TV show.

Hanging at the end of the last thread was this:

re: #492 Anymouse 🌹

bbc.com

With one year to go before Brexit, Conservative Prime Minister Theresa May says she will keep the United Kingdom “strong and united” while making a tour of the country.

The politicking is getting intense in the UK, with former politicians weighing in … former Prime Minister Tony Blair suggested MPs should vote their convictions, even if they go against the party’s wishes.

Wales and Scotland accuse her of a power grab in asking for devolved powers from Brussels be given to Westminster rather than those countries.

She also says there will be no internal customs division between Great Britain and Northern Ireland, while simultaneously maintaining the border to the Republic of Ireland will remain free. (Good luck with all of that.)

The FBI informant in the trial of the men accused of planning to bomb an apartment complex in Garden City, Kansas to kill Somali refugees noted in the trial that when he and the ringleader went to case the apartments, they encountered two Somali women. The driver reached for his pistol to kill them; the FBI agent talked him out of it but said he was prepared to pull his own to kill the ringleader if he tried to kill the women.

The lawyer for the defendant, speaking about discussions between the three men to blow up the apartment complex and kill Muslims waved it away in court as “locker room talk” (really).

Downtown Torrington, Wyoming was evacuated this morning for a major gas leak due to a construction error.

starherald.com (Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald):

TORRINGTON—Homes and businesses in Torrington were evacuated Wednesday morning after workers damaged a gas line.

Firefighter Chuck Kenyon said the leak was caused by contractors excavating a sewer line, who broke a two-inch natural gas pipeline in the alley between Main, West A, 23rd and 24th.

The Torrington Fire Department was dispatched by 9:45 a.m. They were joined by Goshen County Emergency Management, Torrington Emergency Management, Torrington roads and electrical departments, Torrington Police and Goshen County Sheriff’s Office.

Liberty Counsel pulls out of the Orwellian-named “First Amendment Defense Act” (legal discrimination against LGBT) because it is not sufficiently bigoted for conservative Christians.

thenewcivilrightsmovement.com

Liberty Counsel is pulling its support from the First Amendment Defense Act, a “religious freedom” bill languishing in Congress. The legislation was originally created to enable discrimination by people of faith against LGBT people and same-sex couples.

The bill has recently been refiled after sitting in both the House and Senate with no action. The legislation’s text has been changed to comply with federal law, and now also protects those who hold a “religious belief, or moral conviction,” that “two individuals as recognized under Federal law” are married - in other words, it offers support for the marriages of same-sex couples.

Mat Staver, founder and chairman of Liberty Counsel, calls the new First Amendment Defense Act a “Trojan horse that will do more harm than good.” He says, “Liberty Counsel can no longer support FADA.”

The bill is sponsored by Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) and Rep. Raul Labrador (R-ID). President Trump had promised to sign the original version of the legislation.

a) Ms. Daniels is free to tell her story, without repercussions because there is no legal agreement binding her to silence…
b) that the money that she was paid, has to be either 1) returned 2) taxed 3) neither?
c) that the money paid to her, be it from Cohen, the Trump campaign or the LLC is still fundamentally illegal and that the lawyer that drew up the paperwork and authorized the payment is in deep shit?
d) Ms. Daniels can now enjoy the fruits of the free markets?

a) Cohen’s lawyer sure complicated that.
b) If there was no agreement, my non-lawyer high school education would argue it’s a gift (then Cohen owes taxes).
c) Maybe. Delaware has fast-and-loose corporate laws (where the LLC was constituted). Cohen could be in deep trouble as the representative for Trump (the state of New York could argue he misled Stormy Daniels and misrepresented Donald Trump)—good-bye law license.
d) She already is.

Texas school district suspends teacher for allegedly speaking about gender issues to elementary students.
thehill.com

The whole issue is a crapfest. The teacher is in a same-sex marriage; according to her lawyer, students asked about her marriage. She asserts it’s her right to speak of her marriage.

Her lawyer accused the school district of trying to intimidate her supporters by releasing all sorts of information about her.

The school asserts they told her to “change her behaviour” (regarding speaking to elementary students); the lawyer asserts they did no such thing.

She is suspended with pay while the school investigates.

It would appear if you are in an opposite-sex marriage it’s acceptable to talk about your marriage in Texas; if you are in a same-sex marriage you are not even “separate but equal.”

Regarding the “Free Range Kids” from the previous thread:

There was a big free range case in the Maryland suburbs of DC three years ago.

In December 2014 and April 2015 the parents let their kids play and walk home from a park about a mile away. In the first case, the police picked them up and drove them home. In the second case, some idiot saw them walking alone and called police. The police held the kids for several hours while they figured out what to do. Child Protective Services were called and held the children for several more hours.

The children were taken from the parents several times. The County legal system and Child Protective Services investigated the parents for child neglect.

After a long legal tussle, I think that the county backed down, and the parents were “absolved”.

I grew up in Gary, Indiana, we were right on the edge of town with a patch of woods and swamps behind the house, it was my adventure playground and where I spent all my Saturdays and school vacation days. I would disappear in the mornings, come home to sound of the noon whistle for lunch and go off again until dark.

In 2001, we moved to a village of 180 souls on the Rhine and raised four kids there. We never had an issue about them running about in the village unsupervised. Only time I felt compelled to go check up on them was when the main road was closed due to an accident and the traffic was re-routed through the village.

Kids need to get dirty, occasionally even scraped and bruised. They need to learn to be curious and satisfy their curiosity. And they need to learn to play with each other unsupervised, to resolve their own conflicts among themselves without always having a higher authority to refer to.

I’ve been thinking a bit about lawyer Cohen saying he never let Trump know about the NDA with Stormy since that popped up last night.

Anyone think he said that to further protect Trump?

I have a feeling Trump asked Cohen to say that to get Trump out of the mess. Pretty late as the mess is already upon them.

Maybe it is just another promise of “you take the bullet for me…and I will pardon you” kind of thing.

I have a feeling Trump doesn’t care if someone like Cohen loses his law license should that happen. He only cares about himself. I bet there are many wrecked careers and people in the rear view mirror of the Trump Bus.

They still have the idiocy that gun nuts call “Constitutional Carry”. That is the fantasy that the 2nd Amendment _prohibits_ licensing of weapons in any form and has been pushed hard in regard to concealed carry. Wiki says: “As of 23 March 2017, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas[disputed], Idaho (residents only), Kansas, Maine, Mississippi, Missouri, New Hampshire, North Dakota (residents only; concealed carry only),[8] Vermont, West Virginia[9] and Wyoming (residents only) do not require a permit to carry a loaded concealed firearm for any person of age who is not prohibited from owning a firearm”

Too many states and too many nuts.

I have no particular problem with carry - sometimes it really is needed. But licensing and training must be mandatory.

I lived on a ranch in Sedona, Arizona in the early 80’s. A mother Siamese cat there had a litter and i intentionally did not touch the kittens, I wanted them to grow up completely feral. After all, their job was to provide pest control.
I fed them enough to keep them around but also wanted them to do what they were there for…

They called it a Chinese taco. Fillings were sausage, onions, peppers, and a little cheese.

The filling was quite good, but the shell was …an unfortunate culinary decision. Not a tortilla, not an egg roll wrap, I think they used dumpling dough. It would have been great as an egg roll filling with the addition of a bit of cabbage, maybe.

We have a feral cat that my wife started feeding a while back. We actually captured is and had it spayed because it’s the right thing to do. Now it has taken to killing off the local wildlife not for food (we feed is well) but because it moves. In other words it’s being a cat. It killed a complete nest of bunnies last night. I picked up 5 dead uneaten caresses in the driveway this morning. I now have nesting screech owls. The fledglings won’t have a chance at this point. I need to make a decision about this quickly.

I had friends who made it their mission to transform such cats to indoor cats. And they were successful

It was dry when I plucked it from the warming tray. Too dry - I sauced it with the stuff they put out for the dumplings and added a dollop of chili paste to that. It would have been suitable for eating from the hand had it not been drenched. I should have grabbed a small bowl for dipping.

Mueller was prosecuting crooks while Trump was hanging out at Studio 54. Nothing wrong with hanging out at Studio 54 mind you but Mueller is a public servant all the way. A real throwback in the best way possible. If anyone other than Trump were the target of his investigation, he’d be treated like a latter day Elliot Ness or Wyatt Earp by FNC, with apologies to the voter I talked to whom said those were his two childhood heroes and added that Mueller is looking like his third.

White House officials said Trump is working on a variety of matters behind the scenes, including efforts to build support for his infrastructure plan — the topic of Thursday’s visit to a suburb of Cleveland.

Describing Trump as “incredibly active,” White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said “there have been a number of major things that the President has taken action on and been engaged on, and he’s giving a major speech (Thursday).”

The president travels to Richfield, Ohio, to promote an infrastructure plan designed to inspire public-private partnerships to rebuild the nation’s roads, bridges, and ports.

After the Ohio, Trump re-boards Air Force One bound for Florida and a three-day Easter weekend at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach.

The ‘Proud Boys’ Are Organizing Another Rally In Boston

This is a cult-like gang organized by veteran racist agitator Gavin McInnes. Their events often turn violent, perhaps because their highest “degree” of membership requires assaulting an antifa protester.

Senate candidate and all-round weirdo V.A. Shiva Ayyadurai will be one of the speakers. Ayyadurai is a rising star of the freak right, attracting support from racist sportscaster Curt Schilling, professional troll Jack Prosobiec, and SMOTI hench-fool Cassandra Fairbanks

So, if there is no legal NDA with Daniels and Trump, what reason would Daniels’ attorney have to NOT release the material proving the affair? Holding back for the highest bid to sell the story? Or, even more worrisome, that there is no real evidence and this has all been a bluff?

One network (NBC, IIRC) did a profile on them. Buncha wussies, all wearing their preppy Proud Boys polo shirts and talking about what victims they are. Hipster douchebags, all of ‘em.

Yep, it was NBC. I had some fun in the comments section with those ‘fuck boys’ as I call ‘em.

My friend (6’5 big black guy) had a recent run-in with them at a local bar in Fort Worth. I’m surprised he didn’t beat all of them down at once with the bigotry they were spewing. They were all wearing “West is the Best” t-shirts and were just being flat out creepy to the female patrons of the bar.

They did the right thing by doing it this way. Daniels and her attorney had kept quiet until the story broke and Trump and Co. started going after her. Since Trump broke the NDA, or whatever you want to call that thing that Cohen wrote, they rightfully could go to the courts and have it thrown out. It’s not their problem that Cohen and Trump are incompetent.

And really, what we have is that the Trump campaign broke campaign finance laws, and paid someone to keep quiet, which means that Trump could be blackmailed.

Avenatti is a very shrewd attorney. He’s probably holding back on releasing whatever he’s got in order to let Trump and Says Who Cohen commit even more unforced errors.

From his Wikipedia page:

Avenatti received a B.A. degree from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with a major in political science in 1996. In 1999, he received a J.D. degree from George Washington University Law School in Washington, D.C. where he worked with Professor Jonathan Turley on constitutional issues relating to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA). He graduated Order of the Coif and first in his class.

In 2003, George Washington University Law School established the Michael J. Avenatti Award for Excellence in Pre-Trial and Trial Advocacy, an annual award given to the member of the graduating Juris Doctor class who demonstrates excellence in pre-trial and trial advocacy. Avenatti also received George Washington University’s prestigious Alumni Recognition Award in 2010.

While in college and later in law school, Avenatti worked at a political opposition and media firm, The Research Group, run by Rahm Emanuel (later White House Chief of Staff for President Barack Obama, and mayor of Chicago). Avenatti worked on over 150 campaigns in 42 states, including multiple gubernatorial and congressional campaigns and Joe Biden’s U.S. Senate campaign.

He also beat Trump once before, in a theft of ideas suit against Trump and ‘Apprentice’ producer Mark Burnett.

The guy is no dummy. Everything he’s doing is for a reason.

As I saw written the other day, Trump has stepped into every trap that Avenatti has laid out for him. He’s pretty much got him and Cohen trapped in such a way that either Cohen faces charges for fraudulently bringing suit in trying to enforce an invalid NDA…or Trump admits he paid a porn star to keep quiet in order to validate the NDA. Either way, it was an illegal in-kind campaign contribution and somebody will have to answer for that.

It’s why they’re not raising a fuss over efforts to institute an unconstitutional line-item veto, something they contested all the way to the Supreme Court until Clinton, because they want Trump to have the power to get his preferred spending items without Democrats having any say in the process.

Weekly Reality Check Time.

I’m still somewhat skeptical about a massive Democratic sweep in November. (I certainly don’t agree with Stephens that the Republicans are setting themselves up for a wipeout like 1974, when Watergate cleaned the stables entirely.) But my skepticism is not based on hoary old clichés like Dems In Disarray or on “cannibalization” that doesn’t seem to be happening anywhere, but, rather, on the structural and institutional roadblocks pointed out last week by the good folks at the Brennan Center.

Because of maps designed to favor Republicans, Democrats would need to win by a nearly unprecedented nationwide margin in 2018 to gain control of the House of Representatives. To attain a bare majority, Democrats would likely have to win the national popular vote by nearly 11 points. Neither Democrats nor Republicans have won by such an overwhelming margin in decades. Even a strong blue wave would crash against a wall of gerrymandered maps. This high barrier to a Democratic majority is at odds with early polls showing Democrats with a significant advantage in the generic congressional ballot. As of mid-March, Democrats held an average lead of nearly eight percentage points, 48-40.1 Based on historical election results, a lead of this magnitude should net Democrats around 30 additional seats—comfortably more than the 24 they need to retake control of the U.S. House of Representatives. Because of gerrymandering, however, that is no longer the case. Even the court-ordered redrawing of Pennsylvania’s congressional map will only improve Democrats’ chances slightly.

It took long and patient work by conservative politicians to complete the task of vandalizing democracy to their own advantage. It’s going to take long and patient work to undo the damage.

David Polly, president of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology, says, “They’re very rich and very complete sequences, that’s why they were set aside, and taking parts of them out of the monuments is essentially like ripping pages out of that history.”

Polly says the fossils still have some protection under federal law, but because they’re no longer on monument land, they could be destroyed by activities like mining or grazing.

The change also jeopardizes funding for scientific work. Paleontologist Rob Gay was excavating a Triassic site of crocodile-like creatures in Bears Ears last year when the monument boundaries shifted and invalidated his grant money. He says, “So we’re still researching the fossils that are out of the ground…but for the fossils still in the ground, it’s sort of in limbo.”

A businessman is interested in minimizing costs to maximize profits.

Strange how he avoids actual urban areas of Cleveland. I wonder why? That’s where the infrastructure needs the most help.

He wants to be in his safe space with the assholes who adore him.

A businessman is interested in minimizing costs to maximize profits.

Things like education, health care, safety, environmental protection, etc., are seen as cost factors to be minimized, and not as investments in a healthy, well educated, productive and well-structured society.

We have seen the results of that approach.

We sure have: Like everything else, they’ve outsourced to education to foreign locales, bringing in the educated workers they want via HB-1 visas while paying a lot of money to politicians to keep out those they don’t. In past generations, major medical organizations would have offered financial incentives to encourage American students to go into medical school and deal with the debts accrued. Now they simply recruit from other nations who invest those resources in their students, with the understanding that the recruits can be sent home if they ever raise a fuss.

It’s also very common for women to write sexually explicit and romantic letters to high-profile criminals, especially those who have committed violent crimes. This appears to be a lot of the fan mail he’s getting. I really don’t know what it is about the female condition that prompts that, but it’s a thing.

Serial killer Richard Ramirez (the Night Stalker) had a rather substantial fanclub, as I recall, of women who quite desperately wanted to fuck his brains out.

Speaking of baseball - the Mets lost one of their most beloved players today. RIP, Grand Orange.

In every way, Rusty Staub, the beloved Mets’ hitting icon, who passed away early Thursday morning at age 73, was bigger than life — a bigger-than-life baseball personality, humanitarian, gourmet chef, wine connoisseur, friend-to-all and, to the fans of Montreal, quite simply, “Le Grand Orange.”

The hulking 6-2 Staub, whose post-retirement weight fluctuated from 250-300 pounds, had battled a number of health issues in recent years, including a near-fatal heart attack, October 2, 2015, on a flight from Ireland to New York. He reportedly became woozy while playing golf near his Palm Beach Gardens, Florida home in late January and was later discovered to be suffering from cellulitis, which evolved into a blood infection that resulted in a shutdown of his kidneys.

Staub died at 12:30 a.m. Thursday at the Good Samaritan Medical Center in West Palm Beach due to multiple organ failure. He was initially admitted with pneumonia, dehydration and an infection and had spent the last eight weeks in the hospital. He would have turned 74 on Sunday.

Networked system spreads ransomware internally.

Yeah, it’s a problem. And it could cause significant problems if networked systems include engine and avionics systems. The airlines and manufacturers are all trying to get systems to better network so that they can do diagnostics while in flight and get more details about performance so maintenance is better and that opens the door to virus/ransomware that could potentially affect those systems.

Keep in mind that any Democrat who takes over will inherit a shambles of an economy worse than the one that Carter had to deal with. And do not compare the press and media of the late 70’s to what we have now, either.

I think your comment makes my point even more. So, lets make it there is no comparison to 80s politics and 2018 politics at all. Which is all I was trying to say.

Toss it all out.

We have splits everywhere. There are, in my opinion three types of Republicans. Ordinary (lesser group), Big Business (The Koch Funded) and Tea/Freedom Party extremists.

In the Democrats we have Old Dems, New Younger and slightly more leftist Dems and outsiders like Bernie who uses Dems when needed.

Our politics is all over the place. The big reason nothing can be predicted. I think too many times we all talk about politics as we knew it…up until about 2012 when it really started to go off the rails.

re: #315 ObserverArt

We didn’t get Trump because he was a Republican. We got Trump because he was Trump and too many thought he was some great outsider business guy that was going to be some big change agent.

I don’t think Trump is what Wendell was talking about comparing the 80s era and the one term Democrat Carter between Nixon?Ford and Reagan.

We got Trump because people were fed up with politicians and politics as usual. They wanted the Anti-Politician, the ultimate outsider who could get away with things that no career politician could think of. The GOP made a deal with the devil in taking him on, but they needed his hard core of support

But that all would not have been possible without a very different media landscape than we had in the 70’s.

I was just trying to say that it is endlessly optimistic to think that Trump is going wreck the GOP brand for more than one election cycle.

Legit ransomware is also the worst because the only solution is “re-image the drive and start over”. There is no recovery. All the more reason to keep backups - preferably off-network.

He was initially appointed to the circuit court by Nixon too. Stevens may have leaned liberal in his judicial rulings but calling him a Democrat is a fucking lie and Trump’s people know it though I doubt he does.

This goes to what Wendell and I have been discussing in this thread. Stevens might as well be a Democrat by comparison to the current Republican party. Hell, toss Nixon in there too. That’s how far out to the right they have gone.

I just wish people realized the GOP represents about 5% of this country.

And the other 25% that support Trump are ignorant losers dragging all of us down.

Slightly more than 5%, but between them and the Trump supporters, they only gain a Congressional majority through gerrymandering and the structure of the Senate.

The great thing about the Wild Card spots is that if you can win 87-90 games, you have a great chance at the playoffs. And the MLB playoffs, perhaps more than any other major sport, are the ultimate craps shoot.

I’m pretty sure one-and-done football is the biggest crap shoot.

They have specific contracts across most of the nation with the post office to do Sunday delivery. I believe only USPS does it but only from specific post offices in larger communities. For example, Eau Claire WI does have Sunday delivery but not Hayward, WI.

Sadly they likely won’t be back in the World Series for another 30 years (as they sell off their good players and replace them with the castaways from other teams *spit*).

The good thing historically about the Cleveland Indians is they have had some of the best scouts and player developers in the game. They have great young teams all the time. Then when they become free agents people like the Yankees and Sox come along and sweep them up. The key is keeping the youngsters coming to make the team exciting at the very least.

And since the Indians AAA team is here in Columbus we get to watch them grow up in our nice downtown ballpark.

Side fact. Huntington Pak was chosen the best new ballpark in America in 2009. Which just happened to be the same year New York opened their new costly Yankees Stadium. That pissed the Yankees and many a New York sports writer off big time.

From the Huntington Park Wiki page:

On August 12, 2009, Huntington Park was named the Ballpark of the Year by baseballparks.com, beating out all other new or significantly renovated baseball stadiums in the country, including such Major League parks as the new Yankee Stadium and Citi Field. The award is given to the new stadium with the “best combination of superior design, attractive site selection and fan amenities.”

Huntington (Bank) Park - Downtown Columbus - Home of the Cleveland Indians AAA Club the Columbus Clippers. A great city scape view with good food and low costs.

9th batter grounds Out to 2nd Base, top of 1st Inning complete
Cubs 3-0

Play By Play officially suspended…

Why TF is any batter still swinging at the ball?

This reminds me of a game I played in a 15-and-16-year-old league. I had my team’s only hit, a bunt single leading off the first, and only because I didn’t know what was coming. We lost 13-12. I think the other team had three hits. There must have been thirty walks, as well as several HBPs. And a few errors too, I guess because some batters got impatient and swung and the infielders were mostly asleep.

I’ve never been in a game like it, not even in Little League. It wasn’t that the pitchers (and there were several of them) were a bunch of dogs, they could throw, but just on that particular afternoon they all had the worst days of their baseball lives.

Each team will win at least 54, lose another 54, but what you do with those other 54 decides how good a team you are. But you are so right about short playoff series. My O’s encountered those Royals and got swept in the 2014 ALCS. Baseball’s a wonderfully cruel and joyful game.

Cleveland has been through some really tough times. It is making a comeback, but it is a slow one. In many ways Columbus has become the power city in Ohio now. We keep growing and growing and I think for many years we are the only big city in Ohio managing to do that.

But when I was a kid, Cleveland was my father’s favorite as he had Slovak relations up there and the city had great places that were run by Eastern Europeans. Parma was known and made fun of for being very Polish. I remember the bakeries and meat markets my German mother and Slovak father just loved.
