Regarding the “Free Range Kids” from the previous thread:
There was a big free range case in the Maryland suburbs of DC three years ago.
In December 2014 and April 2015 the parents let their kids play and walk home from a park about a mile away. In the first case, the police picked them up and drove them home. In the second case, some idiot saw them walking alone and called police. The police held the kids for several hours while they figured out what to do. Child Protective Services were called and held the children for several more hours.
The children were taken from the parents several times. The County legal system and Child Protective Services investigated the parents for child neglect.
After a long legal tussle, I think that the county backed down, and the parents were “absolved”.

I grew up in Gary, Indiana, we were right on the edge of town with a patch of woods and swamps behind the house, it was my adventure playground and where I spent all my Saturdays and school vacation days. I would disappear in the mornings, come home to sound of the noon whistle for lunch and go off again until dark.
In 2001, we moved to a village of 180 souls on the Rhine and raised four kids there. We never had an issue about them running about in the village unsupervised. Only time I felt compelled to go check up on them was when the main road was closed due to an accident and the traffic was re-routed through the village.
Can’t sleep tonight. My husband, when he was young, was allowed to roam through the countryside outside Kansas City MO from breakfast to supper on his pony. When I was young, 20 years later, my folks would hardly let me out of their sight. Different worlds.
Kids need to get dirty, occasionally even scraped and bruised. They need to learn to be curious and satisfy their curiosity. And they need to learn to play with each other unsupervised, to resolve their own conflicts among themselves without always having a higher authority to refer to.

We have a feral cat that my wife started feeding a while back. We actually captured is and had it spayed because it’s the right thing to do. Now it has taken to killing off the local wildlife not for food (we feed is well) but because it moves. In other words it’s being a cat. It killed a complete nest of bunnies last night. I picked up 5 dead uneaten caresses in the driveway this morning. I now have nesting screech owls. The fledglings won’t have a chance at this point. I need to make a decision about this quickly.

I lived on a ranch in Sedona, Arizona in the early 80’s. A mother Siamese cat there had a litter and i intentionally did not touch the kittens, I wanted them to grow up completely feral. After all, their job was to provide pest control.

Avenatti is a very shrewd attorney. He’s probably holding back on releasing whatever he’s got in order to let Trump and Says Who Cohen commit even more unforced errors.

As I saw written the other day, Trump has stepped into every trap that Avenatti has laid out for him. He’s pretty much got him and Cohen trapped in such a way that either Cohen faces charges for fraudulently bringing suit in trying to enforce an invalid NDA…or Trump admits he paid a porn star to keep quiet in order to validate the NDA. Either way, it was an illegal in-kind campaign contribution and somebody will have to answer for that.

I still think it’s important, because while you aren’t going to necessarily get through the person you’re talking to, but maybe you’ll keep others from believing that person. I’m still somewhat skeptical about a massive Democratic sweep in November. (I certainly don’t agree with Stephens that the Republicans are setting themselves up for a wipeout like 1974, when Watergate cleaned the stables entirely.) But my skepticism is not based on hoary old clichés like Dems In Disarray or on “cannibalization” that doesn’t seem to be happening anywhere, but, rather, on the structural and institutional roadblocks pointed out last week by the good folks at the Brennan Center.
Because of maps designed to favor Republicans, Democrats would need to win by a nearly unprecedented nationwide margin in 2018 to gain control of the House of Representatives. To attain a bare majority, Democrats would likely have to win the national popular vote by nearly 11 points. Neither Democrats nor Republicans have won by such an overwhelming margin in decades. Even a strong blue wave would crash against a wall of gerrymandered maps. This high barrier to a Democratic majority is at odds with early polls showing Democrats with a significant advantage in the generic congressional ballot. As of mid-March, Democrats held an average lead of nearly eight percentage points, 48-40.1 Based on historical election results, a lead of this magnitude should net Democrats around 30 additional seats—comfortably more than the 24 they need to retake control of the U.S. House of Representatives. Because of gerrymandering, however, that is no longer the case. Even the court-ordered redrawing of Pennsylvania’s congressional map will only improve Democrats’ chances slightly.
It took long and patient work by conservative politicians to complete the task of vandalizing democracy to their own advantage. It’s going to take long and patient work to undo the damage.

I was just trying to say that it is endlessly optimistic to think that Trump is going wreck the GOP brand for more than one election cycle.

The good thing historically about the Cleveland Indians is they have had some of the best scouts and player developers in the game. They have great young teams all the time. Then when they become free agents people like the Yankees and Sox come along and sweep them up. The key is keeping the youngsters coming to make the team exciting at the very least.
And since the Indians AAA team is here in Columbus we get to watch them grow up in our nice downtown ballpark.

This reminds me of a game I played in a 15-and-16-year-old league. I had my team’s only hit, a bunt single leading off the first, and only because I didn’t know what was coming. We lost 13-12. I think the other team had three hits. There must have been thirty walks, as well as several HBPs. And a few errors too, I guess because some batters got impatient and swung and the infielders were mostly asleep.
I’ve never been in a game like it, not even in Little League. It wasn’t that the pitchers (and there were several of them) were a bunch of dogs, they could throw, but just on that particular afternoon they all had the worst days of their baseball lives.

They have a lot of likable players and as you saw with my conversation with Art, I even played with one of them. When the Tribe played the Cubs,, I joked that Lester and Chapman like myself couldn’t get Guyer out. I too was a lefty pitcher in LL.

The good thing historically about the Cleveland Indians is they have had some of the best scouts and player developers in the game. They have great young teams all the time. Then when they become free agents people like the Yankees and Sox come along and sweep them up. The key is keeping the youngsters coming to make the team exciting at the very least.

We’ve got a Mets farm team (LI Ducks) that plays at a park about three blocks from our house. It’s a really nice place to see a game - so nice that I haven’t been to a MLB park since the eve of the Big Strike.
The Ducks’ claim to fame (or maybe infamy) is that they signed John Rocker a couple of years back, then cut him loose after he sucked and started picking fights with people in the crowd.

Each team will win at least 54, lose another 54, but what you do with those other 54 decides how good a team you are. But you are so right about short playoff series. My O’s encountered those Royals and got swept in the 2014 ALCS. Baseball’s a wonderfully cruel and joyful game.

Huntington Park is below street level too. You can stand outside the park near those columns you see in right field and see in. Lots of people out walking around stop for a peak.
If the Blue Jackets NHL hockey team makes the playoffs, that part of downtown can get real busy this time of the year. Nationwide arena is just behind the left field wall.
There is a nice indoor/outdoor concert facility just down the street to the left of the photo too. Thankfully, downtown Columbus is alive and well and booming.

Charlotte’s downtown has been transformed as well. The basketball arena is nearby, and the football stadium is just a few blocks over. With all of the condos, apartments, and the Blue Line rail system, there would be no need for a vehicle if you worked in that part of the city now. Quite a change from 40 years ago.

A terrific experience. I had managed to get us really good seats a few rows behind home plate and we met a former CBS sports exec who had season tickets and was with his son. Had to make a swing by Boog’s BBQ, and Elrod Hendricks was in uniform and signing autographs. Elrod would pass away a few months later.

I’ve watched major league ball in Wrigley, Shea, the old Yankee Stadium, and, god help me, Candlestick. Shall I tell you the best ball park in America to take in a game? That would be Alex Box Stadium on the LSU campus in Baton Rouge.

I don’t know Cleveland as much as I used too. I’ve been in Columbus too long and I only go up there for sporting events and don’t do that as much as I used to, sadly. I hope the Browns improve so that my friend here want to make the trip.
Cleveland has been through some really tough times. It is making a comeback, but it is a slow one. In many ways Columbus has become the power city in Ohio now. We keep growing and growing and I think for many years we are the only big city in Ohio managing to do that.
But when I was a kid, Cleveland was my father’s favorite as he had Slovak relations up there and the city had great places that were run by Eastern Europeans. Parma was known and made fun of for being very Polish. I remember the bakeries and meat markets my German mother and Slovak father just loved.
