I cut my political teeth at 16 years old, in 1976 fighting forced busing. My parents threw a rally that filled a college stadium to half capacity and NBC national. Me and my friends were pretty savvy for the day. We had nothing, NOTHING I say on the Parkland kids. They humble me as an adult.

This will help the little guy that Trump seemed so concerned about in his campaign, by causing them to spend more on fuel for a car:

EPA Set to Roll Back Fuel Economy and Auto Emissions Standards (Marketwatch)

The Trump administration is preparing to roll back emissions and fuel-economy standards on automobiles, the New York Times reported late Thursday. The Times said Environmental Protection Agency chief Scott Pruitt had submitted a proposal of the plan to cut regulations to the White House, and it is expected to be announced in the coming days. Weakening clean-air and efficiency rules would be a major victory for the auto industry and would undermine one of former President Barack Obama’s signature policy achievements. Any rollback is likely to face legal challenges, particularly from California and 12 other states that have set their own stricter standards.

A brave teacher has passed.

Obituary: Johan van Hulst, the teacher who saved Jewish children

Some of the children Johan van Hulst helped rescue were so young that they no longer remember the daring acts that saved their lives.

Van Hulst, who died on 22 March aged 107, was a key part of the network that helped at least 600 Dutch babies and children escape the Nazis.

Those children survived thanks to carefully orchestrated operations that smuggled them away right in front of the Nazis seeking to send them to concentration camps.

In 1942, two years after the German invasion of the Netherlands, Johan van Hulst - the son of a furniture upholsterer - was working as a lecturer at a Calvinist teacher training college in Amsterdam.

Van Hulst cooperated with the head of an adjacent creche to spirit Jewish children to safety right under the noses of the Nazis across the street.

I have a new food item to add to the ‘hate’ list. The office cafeteria was serving ham and au gratin potatoes for lunch (with a side of cold cooked vegetables), with a honey glaze sauce that the chef ladled over the ham and then, to my horror, also put on the potatoes.

You never want to put a honey glaze sauce on au gratin potatoes.

Judge Says Coffee Must Come with a Cancer Warning in California (Marketwatch):

LOS ANGELES — Coffee in the state of California must carry a cancer warning, a judge here ruled, in a blow to Starbucks and other retailers which had argued that a state law meant to protect consumers shouldn’t apply to them.

The proposed ruling Wednesday from Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Elihu Berle found that Starbucks SBUX, -0.02% and other companies failed to prove their case that a chemical found in coffee posed no significant harm.

A nonprofit called the Council for Education and Research on Toxics sued coffee sellers in 2010, claiming the presence of acrylamide, a chemical created during the roasting process, is carcinogenic and requires a warning under the state law known as Proposition 65.

Some of the forced bussing opponents are perfectly happy to have voluntary bussing, with incentives if need be. It’s totally legitimate, and not at all racist, to be unhappy about your kid being bussed an hour and a half away every day when there’s a school within walking distance of your home.

Wingnuts gotta wing:

Laura Loomer Thrown Out of Courthouse at Pulse Nightclub Trial (Huffington Post, more at the link):

ORLANDO, Fla. — A far-right provocateur on Thursday was escorted from the federal courthouse where the Pulse nightclub shooter’s widow, Noor Salman, awaits a jury’s verdict on charges of aiding the mass shooting.

Laura Loomer’s media credentials were revoked the previous day after she harassed the defendant’s family outside the courthouse with questions about Muslims, jihad and Easter. She returned on Thursday and was removed by a U.S. marshal.

Salman, the 31-year-old widow of Pulse gunman Omar Mateen, is charged with aiding and abetting the attack and obstructing justice for allegedly lying to the FBI. She has pleaded not guilty, and maintains she was in the dark about her husband’s plans. Her lawyers say she was another of his victims, not his co-conspirator. The jury is currently deliberating.

We have enough wingnuts already, we don’t need Rebel Media stirring up crap here.

The current serial features the first encounter with the Sensorites, the group having just finished their harrowing adventure in the 15th century Aztec Empire. Ilona Rodgers, who was just 18 years old at the time, made her television debut in this episode. She is still very much with us, as are two of the original companions, William Russell (Ian Chesterton) and Carole Ann Ford (Susan Foreman). Mr. Russell was 39 at the time and is now 93 years of age, Ms. Ford was 23 then and is now 77.

re: #81 Belafon

I suspect a number of rural areas in KY are like they are here in Texas, where the school system is the biggest and most stable employer, and playing with their salary and retirement is going to be a big issue.

It’s the largest employer in my county

That was the reason school vouchers failed here in Texas. People in rural areas depend on the schools for more than just teaching their students.

It’s why there is so much opposition to them in Nebraska as well, which is why the idea gets defeated every time it is brought up in the Unicameral.

Yeah, this whole “behind-closed-doors” legislative bullshit is the exact opposite of how American democracy is supposed to work. How is it the will of the people if the elected representation is able to craft it, vote on it, and send it to the governor for signature without allowing a single member of the electorate to actually read it and review it?

Trapped Inside the Monster Energy Frat House (goes to Huffington Post, more at the link):

A sixth woman has come forward to complain about sexual discrimination at Monster Energy, a male-dominated beverage company that appears to be plagued by a toxic work culture.

The woman, Karen Simmons, a 50-year-old former sales representative based in Alabama, spent nearly two years with Monster. She amassed a strong track record, even as she fended off one of her Atlanta-based managers, Ted Cook, who hit on her, made comments about her breasts, tried to get her drunk and invited her more than once for an “evening nightcap” in his hotel room on work trips, she told HuffPost.

Robert Duck, Simmons’ direct boss who works out of Monster’s office in Florida, also witnessed Cook’s behavior, but told her to brush it off, she said. “He said Ted was harmless, ‘a dirty old man,’” Simmons recalled.

Through a company spokesman, Duck said Simmons never complained. When reached by phone by HuffPost, he hung up. He did not respond to follow-up texts. Cook also did not respond to a call, text or LinkedIn message.

Conservatism is opposed to democracy. In all nations, at all times it gains power.

My wife and I both work at a private school; and we have only worked at a private school, so any affect to teacher pensions would not affect us directly.

We have many friends who are teachers in the public schools in KY. This is a terrible action that Republicans in this state and others have been working towards for years.

As a new Head Coach, I’m connected on a listserv with other KY football head coaches. Some of them from rural school districts, and many of them holding quite conservative politics. Many of them staunch Republicans. While a coaching listserv at this time of the year is full of posts discussing who wants to schedule who, or posting of assistant coach openings; the last week or so, this bill has dominated the topics of the football coaches in KY. There are a large number of them that are within 5 years of retirement. This is a big deal. Large number of Conservative/Republican coaches are seeing the negative effect of conservative policies, and even they are starting to turn a little bit.

We will see where this goes soon.
