NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert: Music as Pure Joy: Väsen

March 23, 2018 | Bob Boilen —
There’s an abundance of jubilation and glee in the strums, trills, double stops and drones from the Swedish instrumental band Väsen. The trio came to the Tiny Desk with just three instruments, but all together it was a 30-string sonic blast of 12-string guitar, viola and nyckelharpa (a fiddle with keys — think 15th century keytar).

Guitarist Roger Tallroth, violist Mikael Marin and nyckelharpist Olov Johansson have been a touring troupe for more than 25 years with 18 albums filled with adventure, amusement and virtuosity. They span the wide emotional range of Swedish folk music, equally haunting and celebratory. There are some similarities to Irish jigs, reels and waltzes that I’m more familiar with, but this music is more ear-bending, with more surprises than I’m used to in traditional string band folk music.

Hopefully these tunes, many from Väsen’s recent album Brewed — songs steeped in the past with its ears on the future — become a gateway for new listeners.

Set List

“IPA-Gubben”
“Väsenvalsen”
“Sommarpolska”

MUSICIANS
Mikael Marin (5-string viola), Olov Johansson (Nyckelharpa), Roger Tallroth (12-string guitar)

Eclectic Cyborg  Mar 30, 2018 • 10:44:30pm

I wanted to take a moment and respond to that Hill piece posted earlier arguing that Hogg going after Ingrahams advertisers for her statements sets a dangerous precedent.

The writer argues that by someone like Hogg so easily mobilizing people against the advertisers, he’s effectively destroying Ingrahams First Amendment rights because now she won’t want to say what she really thinks about other issues for fear of further backlash. The problem is this is an amazingly stupid argument for two reasons:

1) The First Amendment does NOT shield anyone from the consequences of their speech.
2) THIS IS NOT A FUCKING FIRST AMENDMENT ISSUE. Neither Fox News or Twitter are run by the government!

Ingraham can whine and bitch all day about her stupid show getting fucked up or canceled but none of it has jack shit to do with her Constitutional rights.

The difference is when it happened to Bill’O, he made the excuse that it was a vacation he’d already been planning to take. Either way, it’s obviously a call by leadership to get her away from the network for a week in the hope that things will die down. But what are the odds that Laura is gonna be able to keep herself from digging in deeper on Twitter for a week?

I’m guessing before next Friday, she flips out and starts yammering about how she’s the “victim.”

Local Czech media is reporting that when Speaker Paul Ryan came to visit here a few days ago, the extradition of Evgeney Nikulin was pretty much at the top of the agenda. Apparently, Ryan spoke to Czech officials regarding the matter and of course as we all know, Nikulin was extradited yesterday.

If indeed Ryan talking to Czech officials helped get this guy over to the US to stand trial, then credit where credit is due. I’d still vote against him, if that were possible, but on this matter, he got it right.

And yes, the pro-Russian fifth columnists here are still furious about this. Heh.

Media: Shut up Hillary!
Also media: People who act like assholes or say that individuals who have abortions should be killed have a first amendment right to high profile, highly compensated media jobs

The issue is that the media is now comfortable with the right being complete assholes and calling for the arrest and murder of people not guilty of a crime, but uncomfortable with Hillary calling out those same people as backwards.

I’m reading about how the cops who killed Alton Sterling in Baton Rogue were punished. The shooter was fired and the other one was given a 3 day suspension. But there isn’t enough to charge them according to a grand jury…

Meanwhile my own fat white ass got pulled over Thursday night driving home from a church run Seder. Four glasses of wine is definitely over the modern .08 blood limit even for me at 300 lbs. But he walks up to the far window (no breath smell) and asks for my drivers license and insurance. Then he noticed my sword (I had it along to exercise earlier in the day) and he’s like “Is that a sword?” Yeah I do HEMA (which I then had to explain is Historical European Martial Arts) and he thinks that’s cool. Then again, I’m a save fat old white guy. He’s pulled me over cause my headlights out. Yeah, I hit a deer a while back but I don’t have the money to get it fixed right (with this truck? Fixing is replacing the truck, alas…) He says no ticket since I don’t have the money anyway just do it as soon as I can. Yes sir. I’m on my way - unmentioned is how loud the truck is because the muffler blew off the back half 3 weeks ago…

White privilege. If I were native or black? I’d probably still be waiting for my arraignment on DUI and weapons charges.

Love that quote.

It goes to the people that always say “My kid can draw better than that” when they see art they do not understand because it is simple, decorative and naive.

I always say to them “Well then, be a kid and create your own” and then they find they want to be all adult and perfect and they can never get that joy of a child just having fun and creating.

It is extremely difficult for an artist to get the special child naivety back. The formal aged mind gets in the way.

And the cute little kid looks like she has taken her art to her arms and face. Love it!

I’m with Jim Wright here - where did the Moron-in-Chief get these “facts” about Brown’s pardons from? Does he have WH staff doing “oppo research” edited down to tweetable form - waiting for him when he goes to the toilet (an appropriate place for it)?

The California-bashing from starboard is really reaching ludicrous levels (Fabio? SRSLY?) - it still never addresses the basic question: if the Golden State is such an over-regulated, mismanaged, crime-ridden shithole, how come nearly 40 million people (presumably) want to live there? With more arriving every day.

89
Danack  Mar 31, 2018 • 7:33:30am

David Hogg did a very clever thing by refusing to accept her non-apology, and instead asking her to denounce how fox news has been covering their gun control message:

“I will only accept your apology only if you denounce the way your network has treated my friends and I in this fight. It’s time to love thy neighbor, not mudsling at children,”

If she refuses to do this, she continues to lose advertisers. If she does this the whole of fox news comes under the spotlight of being massive twats.

Getting Laura out of the way by making her take a ‘holiday’ gives all of the pro-“kids dying in gun massacres” groups some time to figure out how to respond to people who they haven’t already spent a couple of decades demonizing.

Lies, damned lies, and Trump level lies.

That’s where we’re at with Trump. All he does is lie.

And when he isn’t lying, he’s projecting like IMAX, obfuscating, or bullying those around him.

But for Trump to complain about anyone else on the pardon power just reminds everyone that Trump pardoned Arpaio despite fact he wasn’t vetted by the Office of Pardon Attorney in the DOJ, Arpaio didn’t wait the requisite time before being considered. He was pardoned because he’s a pal of Trump.

And we also know Trump’s looking at pardoning anyone caught up in Trumpworld criminality because that’s what really matters to him.

Is California’s economy larger than Russia’s?
California’s gross domestic product (GDP)—the value of goods and services produced here—totaled $2.2 trillion in 2013. World Bank data indicate that California’s economy is slightly smaller than that of Brazil (the world’s seventh-largest national economy), but bigger than Russia’s.Dec 4, 2014

California is 1/3rd of the new car market, yes even with all those rules.

bloomberg.com

California is the chief reason America is the only developed economy to achieve record GDP growth since the financial crisis of 2008 and ensuing global recession, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Much of the U.S. growth can be traced to California laws promoting clean energy, government accountability and protections for undocumented people. Governor Jerry Brown, now in his fourth term, considers immigrants a major reason for the state’s success: “39 percent of us are Latino and the majority are from Mexico,” he said in a March 2 interview in his Sacramento office.

In the stock and bond markets, where investors show no allegiance to political parties, California has outperformed the rest of the U.S. the past five years, especially since the Nov. 9 election, when Trump became the fifth person to win the Electoral College and lose the popular vote. California’s creditworthiness keeps getting better, measured by the declining premium global investors must pay to ensure against depreciation of the state’s debt obligations. That premium has diminished more than for any other state since 2012, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. California, whose voters favored Hillary Clinton two to one, outperformed Treasury bonds since the November election. Texas, which is the second-largest state in population and which supported Trump, became cheaper compared to Treasuries and California in the market for state and local debt since the November election. Investors see security in the state with more protections for immigrants and more regulations.

re: #96 retired cynic

She’s still propagating misunderstanding with her use of language.

While Reich addresses the possibility of genetic differences among races more generally, I find it interesting that Klein and Sullivan zero in completely on whether or not they have to do with IQ. The age-old racist notion is that white people are more intelligent than black people, something that has been revived by Charles Murray and Andrew Sullivan.

LeTourneau is using the word “race” as if it has some specific meaning as some people may use it.

But it clearly doesn’t.

Which is one reason why it’s a poor concept.

The book by David Reich, which is why he wrote a piece in the NYT: amazon.com is about human evolution.

The problem, as always, is that people with this or that social agenda then want to use that for said agenda.

What so many writers, even those who might be thought of as well educated, stumble over is finding better substitutes for the word “race”, when they are in fact reifying the old ideas.

Substantially, and this is shown well, much better than LeTourneau implies with her fuzzying of science, is that indeed isolated populations of humans differ from one another in their DNA. Sometimes it’s just a point mutation (SNV), sometimes the differences are larger regions of chromosomes. Sometimes the differences may just be the frequency of a mutation in the population.

Regardless, the social agendas arise out of culture, which is the inheritance of the preceding generations’ cultures, not genomics.

That someone may intend to dress up bigotry under a fancier label is simply a way to advance their own agenda. (I do not believe that Reich is doing this, btw, and I think it is wrong to lump him into the same group as say Murray.)

There’s a lot of cross-talk in this latest kerfuffle, with many different conversations piling on top of each other.

I propose that one reason these topics are difficult is because our society as a whole doesn’t really accept human evolution anyway. The entire conversation in physical anthropology and genomics and genetics is happening in a rarefied atmosphere in which many of our fellow citizens don’t accept the basic ideas to begin with.

This leads a whole lot of people to be swayed by the skill of the writer or orator as a polemicist, rather than the science of human evolution proper.

OK. If I am understanding you correctly, you are more addressing her language and ignorance than her point? I am pretty ignorant on all this myself, but I thought she was trying to get the reader to look at some of the links and follow the arguments. I’m not going to go back and re-read her article, but I am just finishing the Ezra Klein piece, and think I have learned from it. I do think she was correct in wishing he had added one line about the role of lead in the environment.

OK. If I am understanding you correctly, you are more addressing her language and ignorance than her point?

I presume, from the face of her writing, that her point, as you call it, is to draw attention to the importance of what is going on. To quote her:

But I encourage you to read all of the different points of view because it will help sharpen your own thinking.

For which I wholeheartedly agree.

I’m emphasizing on how hard it is to discuss this topic without falling into old traps, which I think she does not avoid.

I do object to her approach here:

In other words, while admitting that scientists are most likely to be wrong in their understanding about the genetic differences among populations, he assumes that at some point those differences will be found—and we need to prepare for that.

This gets back to one of the problems with creationists - they point out that scientists are always changing their minds, thus science doesn’t know anything.

I’m afraid that LeTourneau is taking a creationist tactic here.

Reich’s disclaimer about future discoveries overturning current understandings is de rigueur for good science discussions.

Enough genomes have been sequenced by now to illustrate human evolution in a detail that even 20 years ago was out of reach.

The real issue, the moral issue, I have claimed and will restate here, is this: what matters is how we use this information.

Any invention, any bit of knowledge, can be used to do harm to others. Our recent past shows how the most abstract of scientific inquiries can turn into mass killing machines.

I will also note that here in American society we’re pretty far along in this discussion. If one looks at what people say and write in other countries it is clear that deep, atavistic views of “race” remain ingrained.

I quite agree: California’s economic successes probably rankle Republicans no end - mainly because they have been seen to succeed in a State where the GOP is a near-powerless political minority - and likely to dwindle further in the near future. Oh, and the place is thriving despite a general rejection of the hate-based social policies the Republicans love to spout off about elsewhere.

I was, actually, curious as what -if any- reality lies behind The Orange One’s idiotic tweets about pardons. But knowing Trump, there’s probably not much….

Interesting note on that:

“Brown proposed the establishment of a state space academy and the purchasing of a satellite that would be launched into orbit to provide emergency communications for the state—a proposal similar to one that was indeed eventually adopted. In 1979, an out-of-state columnist, Mike Royko, at the Chicago Sun-Times, picked up on the nickname from Brown’s girlfriend at the time, Linda Ronstadt, who was quoted in a 1978 Rolling Stone magazine interview humorously calling him “Moonbeam”.[45][46] A year later Royko expressed his regret for publicizing the nickname,[47] and in 1991 Royko disavowed it entirely, proclaiming Brown to be just as serious as any other politician.

So of course the Yam would dredge it up again.

Different people’s minds work differently. That’s the problem with IQ as a concept. It’s one dimension.

Take for example my crazy ex-boss and me. He was creative, brilliant, able to see things that others couldn’t - but which became obvious once he explained them. I lack that creativity. I can’t come up with the big, broad, sweeping new idea. But give me the outline of what you want, and I was much better than he was at making it real.

His approach to methods was to keep doing the ones he knew over and over until eventually he bludgeoned the problem into submission. I prefer to constantly refine methods, to do the least amount of work needed to achieve the goal.

He could never write a good first draft of anything. His first drafts always sucked, but he was a phenomenal reviser. His final drafts were punchy, concise, conveyed exactly what needed to be conveyed without extra verbiage. Me? I’m a first draft=final draft writer. I can’t revise my own stuff. I can barely proofread it.

We were that different, and yet (outside of his severe emotional/personality issues) we thought so much alike that we were always on the same page. So, if the two of us were so different, and yet so similar in the context even of just the people we worked with, how diverse is the human mind generally?

If ‘they’ ever ‘come for our guns’, it will be because society as a whole has determined that we can’t be trusted with them, not just because of a few mass killers or gangs, but because the most vocal gun advocates have a view of guns and gun rights that is clearly deranged.

ObserverArt  Mar 31, 2018 • 9:20:58am

Just looking at some local news and it appears this early morning was fatal for a couple drivers on local streets. I’m looking at the images and wondering how do you tear cars completely apart on ordinary city streets with 35 MPH speed limits.

One image of an accident on the westside of Columbus show what appears to be about 1/2 of the front of a car’s passenger compartment, no glass left in the windscreen and the roof metal torn. Nothing left of the firewall…no seats, just a bit of the shell. Nothing of the rear part of the car was even in the image, it must have been flung further down the street.

The other happened less than a mile from my house on Main Street, which my street intersects, at the beginning of downtown. The image online of that shows nothing but debris. I do not see any main part of a car.

Both of these accidents had to have been at least at 75 MPH or more and I don’t even know how you can get a car up to that speed in both cases because there are intersections with traffic lights. They either caught all green lights or ran red ones to get that speed. Both are worse than extremely bad highway crashes.

There was just the driver in both accidents and now both are dead.

Also related. I saw a crash of a Tesla Sedan that killed the driver on the news this morning. The image they showed was very concerning, unless this also wa extremely high speed. The whole front of the Tesla was gone. It looked like one-half of an egg shell, the front gone from the front A pillars forward. You could see the seats at about where the car was split. I guess the driver hit the concrete of a wall that was at a split in the road.

I love cars, love to drive. What the hell are people doing to wipe themselves out so thoroughly with their vehicles???

There’s a stretch of road about 4 miles long not far from me. No traffic lights and the limit is 40. Drivers routinely go 60-70 along there. Police have stepped up patrols in the past year or so but the fast driving continues.

But the big reason is that people are often stupid behind the wheel. I believe you should have to retake a road test every 10 years after you get licensed.

The NRA has worked hard, and has largely been successful in portraying themselves as THE spokesman for gun owners. I think most non-gun owners (gun non-owners?) increasingly see them as representative of us, even though they’re not really. They represent a fringe, but a very loud, very visible fringe, and they spend a lot of time and effort making that fringe even fringier - at the expense of the broader population growing increasingly uneasy with them and by extension with gun owners and gun ownership generally.

That’s the problem. The public, I think, increasingly sees the NRA as more like the mass shooter than like themselves. The crazy, apocalyptic, violence-tinged rhetoric coming from them makes them seem like all gun owners are a lost job or failed marriage away from shooting a bunch of people. And their followers on social media and elsewhere add to that perception - “I’m a law abiding gun owner who is no part of the problem, but if you don’t stop saying bad things about guns I’m gonna kill someone!”

I heartily disagree with you that she is using a “creationist tactic” here, by paraphrasing Reich. But I was never a debater, and am not interested in debating that now.

I do agree that the way we use the term “race” in regard to humans is evolving, and needs to evolve further. Current M-W dictionary:

race
noun
Definition of race

1 : a breeding stock of animals
2 a : a family, tribe, people, or nation belonging to the same stock
b : a class or kind of people unified by shared interests, habits, or characteristics
3 a : an actually or potentially interbreeding group within a species; also : a taxonomic category (such as a subspecies) representing such a group
b : breed
c : a category of humankind that shares certain distinctive physical traits
4 obsolete : inherited temperament or disposition
5 : distinctive flavor, taste, or strength

I had this come up in an article I was editing for a magazine, where the author was using race in people as an analogy with strains in livestock. I cut it, not just because it was not relevant to the article, really, but that it did not conform to current terminology.

But I must say, I don’t know the language to use. I am just ignorant.

One thing I’ve noticed is that I’ve had to force myself into the habit of checking my mirrors in addition to using the backup camera in my new car. It’s deceptively easy to just get used to that thing being there and showing you what’s behind, but when driving either of my older cars (both of which are significantly heavier and more dangerous to back into someone), that feature doesn’t exist and I need to be not just able to do without it, but in the habit of not relying on it.

On FB, I made a wise-ass comment on a thread with my siblings. Hawaii Bro said he was gonna say the same thing but I got there first.

I told him, “It’s earlier where you are. In a way, you thought it up before me.”

Why Twitter? She does have a radio show too. I don’t think she’s taking a leave from that, and that’s where the next advertiser campaign should be directed.

The vast majority of drivers believe their driving skills are above average.

The thing is, even though modern cars are vastly safer than they were even a decade ago, they don’t escape the laws of physics.

I believe my driving skills to be above average. I would never be doing 60 in a 35 zone.

Part of good driving skills is being responsible and allowing for others and conditions. Mashing your foot to the floor is not skill.

That’s why I can’t imagine how the accidents this morning in Columbus occurred. Maybe drunk driving, but then if you’re drunk, why go over the speed limit?

I’m with Jim Wright here - where did the Moron-in-Chief get these “facts” about Brown’s pardons from? Does he have WH staff doing “oppo research” edited down to tweetable form - waiting for him when he goes to the toilet (an appropriate place for it)?

The California-bashing from starboard is really reaching ludicrous levels (Fabio? SRSLY?) - it still never addresses the basic question: if the Golden State is such an over-regulated, mismanaged, crime-ridden shithole, how come nearly 40 million people (presumably) want to live there? With more arriving every day.

I’d love it if all the Republicans moved out to one of their paradises, say Kansas or Mississippi. The traffic jams would be gone and the crank letters to the editor would be a thing of the past.

Hate California? Please leave.

It’s amazing to watch the Parkland survivors totally break the conservative-GOP attack machine, something the Dem establishment has been trying & failing to do for decades.

They are not afraid of alienating potential constituency.

beyond that, they have put a human face on the issue of gun control, one which most non-ideologically blindered, petty and vindictive people find sympathetic and can identify with in their own children, family or neighbors

re: #188 Skip Intro

Things aren’t looking so good for Tesla these days. Problems with the Model 3, recall of the Model S, and they’re losing money. Almost sounds like Bain Capital is running the place.

The problem is layered:

1.) Musk didn’t do himself any favors by calling it Autopilot.
2.) Even though it’s clear that “full self driving” isn’t available yet and is depended on upgrades and legislative changes, he’s selling that as a pre-paid option.
3.) *This was probably the problem here* The Autosteer function is a binary on/off thing, it requires occasional input from the driver or it beings to throw up alarms and eventually will slow the car to a halt. But if you put too much input into the wheel it thinks you’re taking over and turns Autosteer off. Traffic Aware Cruise Control is the better driving mode IMHO.

So the driver in this case probably had Autosteer on at some point prior to the crash but either turned it off deliberately and then wasn’t prepared to deal with the road conditions. It’s possible that Autosteer would’ve avoided the crash entirely, but that the driver saw something that panicked him, grabbed the wheel and caused the crash. A lot is going to have to be done at the interface / handoff between human and AI, letting the AI just turn off instantly creates a problem absent active monitoring of the driver’s state of awareness.

P.S. I’m going down to Marina del Rey with my Dad in a couple hours to pick up his Model S.

That is going to add to the whole debate about digitally controlled vehicles. I think that is why the story in national.

Here is a link:

NYT - Tesla Says Crashed Vehicle Had Been on Autopilot Before Fatal Accident

From the article:

The company said in a statement posted on its website that the driver in the crash last week had “about five seconds and 150 meters of unobstructed view” before he crashed into a median barrier, adding that “the vehicle logs show that no action was taken.” The driver, Wei Huang, had been given “several visual and one audible hands-on warning earlier in the drive,” Tesla said.

Still, Tesla defended its Autopilot hardware. In its statement, the company said there was one automotive fatality for every 86 million miles across all vehicles in the United States, compared with one fatality for every 320 million miles in vehicles equipped with Autopilot.

“If you are driving a Tesla equipped with Autopilot hardware, you are 3.7 times less likely to be involved in a fatal accident,” the company said.

First off the driver was violating the terms of use, Autosteer is currently Level 2 only, you’re supposed to keep your hands on the wheel and pay attention. Clearly he wasn’t doing that because he’d already ignored three warnings. Second, Tesla’s numbers are correct, but they don’t account for how many miles are being driven with autopilot or traffic aware cruise control enabled. On the other hand the data I and my insurance agent have seen suggest that while autopilot equipped cars are safer they’re also involved in more minor not-at-fault accidents. Which indicates that something about them is causing other people to run into them more often. Tesla’s biggest problem is that because they’re one of the first movers in AI driven autos every terrible anecdote becomes news.
